Mission Community Foundation Funds Three Sara Stedys for Mission Memorial Hospital

Mission Memorial Hospital (MMH) has received three Sara Stedy patient transfer aids thanks to Mission Community Foundation. This generous donation underscores the Foundation’s commitment to enhancing patient care and promoting early mobility initiatives within the community.

The Sara Stedy is an innovative patient transfer aid designed to facilitate safe and efficient transfers, while also encouraging patients to engage in their own mobility. This nonpowered device allows patients to stand independently or with minimal assistance from hospital care teams, significantly improving their confidence and physical well-being, as well as overall recovery.

Jill McIntosh, clinical operations manager, at MMH, states how “sara steady’s are a valuable piece of equipment that we use daily for supporting our patients to be mobilized and transferred. The Sara Steady is convenient and quick for one team member to use, and has a strong base providing comfort (and steadiness) to the patient”.

According to executive director, Elizabeth Harris, Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation: “the

Sara Stedy devices will play a crucial role in enhancing patient care and promoting early mobility, which are essential components of a patient’s recovery journey. And we are thankful to the Missional Community Foundation in helping fund this crucial equipment”.

The addition of the Sara Stedy devices aligns with Mission Memorial Hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide high-quality care and improve patient outcomes. The hospital staff is excited to integrate these aids into their daily routines, knowing the positive impact they will have on patient mobility and safety.

If you would like to support the Foundation in helping Mission Memorial Hospital please contact: Lakhbir.Jassal@fraserhealth.ca or visit fvhcf.ca to learn more.

Cooking is a family-friendly activity for the holidays

As winter settles in, it’s the perfect time to step away from screens and enjoy an opportunity to cook with your family. What better way to spend quality time in the colder months than by making a hearty stew full of your favourite local vegetables, like carrots and potatoes?

Cooking together can be a wonderful bonding experience, allowing your kids or grandkids to learn essential life skills while having fun. Start by gathering the ingredients, which include a great mix of vegetables, herbs and spices.

Beyond just meal prep, cooking together teaches valuable lessons about the benefits of healthy home-cooked meals. By choosing fresh, local ingredients, you can create dishes that are both delicious and nutritious. Use this opportunity to discuss the importance of supporting local farmers and understanding food production.

By buying locally, you’re lowering your environmental footprint and supporting sustainable practices by local farmers. Ontario’s fruit and vegetable growers, for example, have been implementing sustainable growing practices across the province for more than 20 years – shrinking their environmental footprint by using less water, energy, fertilizer and crop-protection products, while maintaining healthy soils and ensuring their businesses stay profitable and productive.

They’re also using new technologies like smart watering and spraying systems, robotic weeding systems and

cameras that count fruit tree buds to predict harvest timing.

Get the kids involved in making this simple, hearty recipe from Foodland Ontario early one morning, then enjoy the day together playing games or enjoying some of the great activities winter has to offer, while dinner is slowly cooking.

The perfect sweet potato side for your turkey dinner

Christmas is one of the major Canadian holidays on the calendar where food plays a starring role. The centrepiece is often turkey, ham, a beef roast or even lamb, but there are many ways to build locally grown produce into a holiday menu as well.

Potatoes, carrots, turnips, parsnips, beans, corn, greens or sweet potatoes all make terrific side dishes to complement a main course of your choosing – and all of them are grown in Ontario.??

By buying locally, you’re lowering your environmental footprint and supporting sustainable practices by local farmers. You’ll also add great taste and nutrition to your meal with the unmatched flavour of field or sun-ripened vegetables harvested at peak freshness.

For more than 20 years, Ontario’s fruit and vegetable growers have been widely adopting a range of practices that support sustainable food production. These include technologies and techniques to use less energy and fertilizer, using tools like soil testing and cover crops to make healthier soils, and reducing water and pesticide use.

At the same time, growers have also been investing in developing new vegetable and fruit varieties that meet consumer demands for look, taste and texture, and that grow well in the Canadian climate.

The Radiance sweet potato is one such example, the first sweet potato variety bred by Canadians for Canadians. It is

red-skinned with deep orange flesh and, unlike southern varieties, matures early in Canada’s cool climate growing conditions, so it’s ready for December holiday meals.

Radiance is also sweeter, stickier and firmer than other sweet potatoes, making it ideal for Canadian consumers who prefer a caramel-like flavour. Try this recipe from Foodland Ontario with your next holiday meal:

Maple-candied Sweet Potatoes

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: Approx. 2 hours

Makes: 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients:

6 sweet potatoes (approximately 5 lb/2.2 kg) peeled and quartered

1 cup (250 ml) apple cider

2/3 cup (150 ml) maple syrup

2 tbsp (25 ml) butter

1 tsp (5 ml) salt

1/2 cup (125 ml) chopped fresh parsley

1 tbsp (15 ml) fresh lemon or lime juice

Directions:

In a large pot, cover potatoes with water. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer for about 12 minutes or until almost tender. Drain in a large colander; let cool enough to handle. Slice each piece in half and place in a nonstick 9" x 13" (24 cm x 34 cm) baking dish.

In a small saucepan, combine apple cider, maple syrup, butter and salt; bring to a boil. Pour over potatoes. Bake in 325°F (160°C) oven for 1.5 hours, gently turning and basting occasionally.

Mix parsley with lemon or lime juice and sprinkle over potatoes.

The popular Honda CR-V compact crossover is a top seller for the company and carries on into 2025 with no significant changes. There was a substantial makeover a few years ago with the introduction of new hybrid option, more features and n updated styling. With a previous increase in exterior dimensions, the new CR-V hybrid is also bigger on the inside and has more cargo capacity. The interior was revamped with a more stylish quality feel. The seats are more comfortable for long distance driving and there is more storage and extra rear legroom. The CR-V arrives in both gasoline engined and a hybrid version as tested.

The 2025 Honda CR-V hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0L four-cylinder engine with a two-motor hybrid system to produce a total maximum output of 204 horsepower. The engine features high-pressure direct injection, a more rigid crankshaft, larger exhaust port surface area, and better noise and vibration damping.

The 2-motor hybrid system comes with a parallel-axis 2-motor arrangement with a larger traction motor and power generator, plus a low gear coupled to the engine for towing (1,000-pound maximum.) Combined output is rated at 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft. of torque.

The 2025 Honda CR-V line up comprises: LX, Sport, EX-L models and the Hybrid Touring model as tested. LX and Sport trim CR-V’s feature a dash mounted seven-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay

and Android Auto, while the EX-L and Touring trims get a nine-inch screen and wireless smartphone connectivity, plus a wireless phone charger. The hybrid model comes in 2 trim levels priced from $47,325 to $49,825 plus Freight and PDI ( ($2,000). Added as standard is perforated leather seating with orange accents, 9-inch multimedia touchscreen with embedded navigation and Bose Premium Sound System with 12 speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, plus two rear seat USB-C charge ports. On the outside, the hybrid has specific black 19-inch aluminum wheels, a chrome exhaust finisher, black roof rails, hands-free power tailgate, and a rear camera washer. The CR-V Hybrid EX-L has 18-inch wheels, while the Touring version rides on 19-inch alloys and features a gloss black grille plus a platinum accent lower bumper. The Touring Hybrid also offers hands-free access to the rear cargo area.

Interior highlights include a neat, high quality, well-designed and comfortable cabin, better visibility, a huge amount of storage front and rear, a large center console and new seats. The dash is very well designed with stylish hidden vents behind the honeycomb style dash-panel, and sensible control knobs. The CR-V Hybrid’s steering wheel and shift knob are leather-wrapped, and the Touring Hybrid’s wheel is also heated. The top two hybrid grades have automatic-dimming rearview mirror, which reduces tint to reduce glare from trailing vehicles’ headlights. Meanwhile, rear legroom is increased

along with cargo capacity to 1,028 L, increasing to 1,113 L total by lowering the load floor in the top-tier trim models. With the 60/40 split rear seat folded, 2,166 L of total cargo space is available.

Safety is good with Hondas as standard suite of advanced functions, multiple new airbags, collision avoidance and programming for improved pedestrian and cyclist recognition.

On the road, the CR-V hybrid has adequate power, good overtaking, and highway cruising ability. The engine seems to have a wider rev range and a

good turn of speed for all driving styles and modes. Driving is made easier with the electronic CVT transmission that features a B (braking) mode for regenerative braking, in addition to regular drive. B mode makes one-pedal driving possible and can be adjusted via steering-wheel mounted paddles. Four driving modes come standard: normal, sport, eco and a new snow mode. The hybrid system is pretty seamless and overall, there is good acceleration and responsiveness. Sport mode offers a more rewarding driving experience, but don’t expect Sports car handling, but rather a more relaxed comfortable

driving sensation. Downsides are few, the Touring’s 19-inch alloys make for a harsher ride, and the infotainment screen could be bigger. Fuel economy for the hybrid is rated at (Regular 87) 6.0 / 6.9 / 6.4 L / 100 km city / highway / combined.

To sum up, the new CR-V Hybrid continues the best attributes of the previous CR-V with a good number of improvements and remains a very strong contender in the compact family CUV market. Fit, finish and equipment levels are good, while the top Touring models can be pricy, but this is at the premium spectrum level in this sector. Highly recommended.

2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid Touring. Priced from $47,325 to $49,825 plus Freight and PDI ( ($2,000)

The importance of Winterizing your vehicle afpxy vfhn

Article submitted by Autobahn Abbotsford

Winterizing your vehicle is essential for ensuring safety and reliability during the harsh winter months. As temperatures drop, the risk of accidents increases due to icy roads and reduced visibility. Proper winterization, which includes checking and replacing batteries, tires, and fluids, helps prevent breakdowns and improves traction and handling. Additionally, keeping your gas tank at least half full minimizes

the risk of fuel line freeze-ups, while a well-maintained windshield wiper system enhances visibility during snowstorms. Overall, taking the time to winterize your vehicle not only safeguards your investment but also protects you and your passengers from potential hazards on the road.

Sahil Chawla along with the UBC X UFV CanAm team hosted a blood pressure monitoring event last weekend at Kalghidhar Gurdwara, aiming to raise awareness of hypertension within the South Asian community. With up to 50% of individuals potentially unaware they have high blood pressure, this initiative highlights the importance of proactive health management and early detection.

Through these ongoing events, they hope to educate attendees about hypertension and encourage regular

monitoring and lifestyle changes for better health outcomes. The event was the first in a series, as organizers plan to host screenings every second Sunday at the Kalghidhar Gurdwara and eventually expand to other community hubs, including gurdwaras, mosques, and churches across Abbotsford.

This initiative represents a step forward in promoting accessible health education and screenings, empowering community members to prioritize their well-being.

Alongside many community foundations across Canada, the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) commissions a Vital Signs report every 2 years. By gathering data and community knowledge, we aim to spark conversation about significant economic and social trends to tell the story of how our community is faring in key quality of life areas.

Over the years, our Vital Signs program has evolved, and we are proud to announce this year’s spotlight For the first time, we have devoted nearly half of our report to one topic - food security Why? Because Abbotsford presents a unique paradox We are considered the ‘bread basket of BC’ and one of the most generous communities in Canada We are also a place where people still go hungry This year’s report explores the opportunities and challenges we face in feeding our city

2024 Abbotsford

The following is one of four featured case studies on Food Security as part of this year’s Vital Signs report. Many of t hose in our faith based community help feed our most vulnerable. Here is how local Gurdwaras are part of the community effort to help address food insecurity in Abbotsford.

CASE STUDY: Seva - Selfless Service Special thanks to:

In Abbotsford, 25% of the population belongs to the Sikh faith (this compares to 5.9% provincially). The Sikh religion originated in the Punjab region of India and advocates equality, social justice, service to humanity, and tolerance for other religions. The concept of seva, or selfless service, is manifested in the free meals offered by members of th e local temples, or Gurdwaras, everyday.

If you visit the Khalsa Diwan Society Gurdwara on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford, you’ll be greeted with a homemade, vegetarian meal. Staples of the meal include chai tea, pakoras (similar to fritters), a savory Indian yogurt, daal (a lentil curry dish), rice, and roti (bread). The rotating menu also features a curry dish (perhaps potatoes, chickpeas, or paneer) an d a dessert (likely rice pudding, sweet yellow rice, or speciality Indian sweets or candies).

This is in service of the teaching of the first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who founded Sikhism. He established a principle that no one should go hungry – the person who has more should give to the person who has less. All that the Gurdwara asks of diners is that they do not show up under the influence of substance s, and they cover their head (per Sikh teachings).

The majority of the food served in Gurdwaras all over the world, is often made by volunteers. This food is procured through donations - temple members are asked to offer what they can when they come to pray - and those funds are then used to feed the community.

Gurdwara doors are open to all, with a space that is informal, casual, and welcoming. In Abbots ford, many of our most vulnerable, including homeless youth, share, by word of mouth, this opportunity for a hot meal available everyday. For some of those same individuals, seva has become something that they participate in by also volunteering to prepare food and serve it to others.

Any hectic activity that has just started to You are in a good position to make some final decisions on something you may have first considered late July to mid August. The position of somebody else may be clearer now, particularly if they decide to bring something to an end. If this does happen it can make it easier in some way when it comes to normal routines in life.

Someone else can be very straightforward as to what they either like or expect from you. Be careful you don’t read into this more than is being offered, particularly if there is an expectation for you to take on responsibilities or to put things in place. Make decisions up to late September that will keep you in control of your finances.

Whatever you had to rethink when it comes to putting things in place since mid August will now allow you to be clear of mind to late September when it comes to something that might have been first discussed late July to mid August. You can now make decisions that please you. Don’t be tempted to spend too much though.

You are in an excellent position to be able to make decisions to late September that will take your life forward. You can feel as though you have greater personal choice or some control at last. There might be a second stage to this from January to April next year and for this reason it could be wise to ensure there is some flexibility.

Whatever financial decisions you may have first considered from late July to mid August can now be looked at more thoroughly, especially in relation to the best actions to take to be able to move forward. You need to be able to satisfy your own priorities, which may not necessarily fit in with the expectations of somebody else.

You are in a good position to come to realisations regarding any situations where you might feel as though you are taking on more than is reasonable on a regular basis. This is more about making decisions to bring matters to an end where commitments attached will have an inhibiting effect on possible future accomplishments.

Focus on anything you are determined to develop more for your own independence in the future. You can realise that contemplation alone will not move things forward. From now to early September you need to look at the commitments that would need to be taken on. Doing this in stages will help you to get used to the changes.

You could come to the realisation, from now to late September, that it is better to scale down ideas you might have had late July to mid August to be able to take these things into the future successfully. Others might have bigger ambitions but you can be happier with small steps, allowing you to have a feeling of better control.

Having absolute confidence about how you stand on any matter will engender respect from others, even though they may not fully agree with you. This could result in clarity when it comes to commitment and support, which may have been an issue from late July to mid August and was left hanging. Be mindful of the obligations you take on.

Something you thought had become evident since mid August where someone else’s decision making is concerned could again become more unknown to late September. It could be that they need to withdraw to make final decisions. These could involve taking your priorities into account as well as generating some sort of pleasure in life.

You are in a position to late September to contemplate future plans and possibilities that you may have wanted from late July to mid August but could not finalise. You have the opportunity to engage with others and get a response. This could also have a lot to do with leaving the past behind up to 20th November so you can move on with a new life direction.

Something that wasn’t made perfectly clear or finalised by somebody else between late July and mid August can now return to late September where final decisions need to be made by them. It can be up to you to ensure they do not avoid responsibilities that could leave you with too much to get properly organised or put into place.

ALG Lawyers was founded by Jasdeep Aujla. ALG established its roots in Abbotsford and now provides legal services and has lawyers across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, with offices in Surrey and Vancouver. Jas has been acknowledged and has the distinction of being the first South Asian from the city of Abbotsford to play CIS football at UBC. On account of pioneering that achievement, he continues to ensure that ALG is involved in local sports organizations amongst other local community initiatives. Most recently, Jas and other lawyers at ALG were asked to assist in helping to bring the 55+ BC Summer Games to Abbotsford.
