Expanded graduate scholarship funding will support students

Increased scholarship funding will support graduate students during their studies and prepare them for in-demand careers.

The Province is investing approximately $15 million in graduate scholarships over three years, add-

Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “These scholarships reinforce how important it is to train people for current and future jobs in our rapidly growing clean economy. They are also an important part of our strategy to support in-demand careers for First Nations and in all

ing $2,500 to each new graduate scholarship award. This funding will accelerate talent development and innovation, along with recruiting and retaining talent, and support graduate students’ success in British Columbia’s growing economy.

“These scholarships will help more graduate students become our province’s next generation of researchers, innovators and leaders, and the talent that employers and British Columbians rely on,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Through the StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan, we’re supporting graduate students by significantly increasing graduate scholarships, making education more affordable and more accessible and helping set people up for success in our growing economy.”

Building on the StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan, the new higher award value of $17,500 will support graduate students with increasing costs.

“Transitioning to clean energy to combat climate change has direct and positive impacts on our job market,” said George Heyman, Minister of

communities across B.C.”

With global inflation driving up the cost of living, graduate students throughout the province will benefit from the increased scholarship investment, making post-secondary education more affordable while helping recruit and retain B.C.’s brightest minds.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Minister Robinson to the University of the Fraser Valley today to make this impactful announcement,” said James Mandigo, acting president, University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). “By making the next level of education more accessible, we’re bolstering our commitment to engaging learners, transforming lives and building community.”

The B.C. Graduate Scholarships were first introduced in 2018 to support students’ success and have supported graduate students to pursue their research and skills training to find solutions to pressing real-world challenges. Ten post-secondary institutions throughout B.C. are administering the graduate student scholarships, enabling them to support and train the province’s next generation of leaders.

“Working on my graduate degree has been a life-changing experience – not only by allowing me to significantly increase my knowledge, but also by allowing me to prove to myself what I’m really capable of doing and learning,” said Tara Scheirer, UFV student. “I know this funding will be appreciated by grad school students for years to come.”

The StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan released May 2, 2023, is a cross-government plan that will help

make education and training more accessible, affordable and relevant to help prepare the people of B.C. for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

Budget 2023 invests $480 million over three years to support the StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan to work to break down barriers to post-secondary education so more people can get training for in-demand careers and so employers can access the talent they need.

Effective Aug. 18, 2023, the oral formulation of edaravone (Radicava ORS), which works to slow the loss of physical functions in ALS patients, will be added to the PharmaCare formulary as a limited-coverage benefit. The intravenous (IV) formulation of Radicava has been covered by BC PharmaCare as a limited-coverage benefit since August 2020. In the first year of implementation, it is expected as many as 100 patients in B.C. will be eligible for either the oral or IV formulation of Radicava.

In addition, two new medications are now covered by BC PharmaCare under the Expensive Drugs for Rare Diseases (EDRD) process. They are givosiran (Givlaari), covered as of June 22, 2023, and triheptanoin (Dojolvi), covered as of May 23, 2023.

Givlaari is an injectable medication to treat AHP, which is a metabolic disease that causes people to experience painful attacks in several parts of their body including the abdomen, chest, back, arms or legs. If untreated, it can lead to chronic kidney disease

tients living with LC-FAODs, which are rare genetic disorders that prevent the body from breaking down longchain fatty acids into energy during metabolism. As many as four patients may be eligible for coverage in the first year of implementation.

These changes ensure that coverage is aligned with clinical evidence and patient access to appropriate medications is improved for those living with these conditions.

Inspiring Acts of Compassion: Grade 12 Students Raise Over $46,000 for BC Children's Hospital

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and altruism, a group of seventeen determined Grade 12 students from Abbotsford—Emalika Kapoor, Grishma Wadhawan, Rabbani Batra, Raissa Batra, Punit Dhillon, Angel Gakhar, Adiya Mittal, Katherine Deng, Devon Arora, Armaan Bajaj, Armaan Dhaliwal, Amrit Dhaliwal, Anisha Khera, Daisey Dhesi, Iba Ali, Ky Truong, and Mantaj Grewal—embarked on a mission to make a significant difference in the lives of children at the BC Children's Hospital. Their remarkable efforts culminated in a fundraising initiative that not only exceeded expectations but also showcased the power of youthful determination and a collective desire to bring about positive change.

Their first step was to create an event that connected with the local community, giving attendees a chance to have a great time while making a difference. By selling tickets, they mixed fun with a good cause, making sure everyone had a meaningful experience. Their careful planning and teamwork not only gave

everyone a memorable time but also brought hope to children in need.

But the students didn't stop at that. They were determined to make a bigger difference. They visited Khalsa Diwan Society Gurudwara, Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and Gurdwara Kalgidhar Darbar Sahib in Abbotsford. Talking to people and sharing their mission. Their sincere appeals and strong dedication moved the people they met, and the community responded with great kindness which led to students to raise $46,000. These visits not only showed how much they cared but also how respectful they were of the diverse cultures in their community.

The fundraiser took place at Zaika Tastes of India's new Mission venue where there was dinner, dance, a henna artist, a balloon twisting station, dance performances and many raffle prizes to win! All raffle prizes were donated by businesses around Abbotsford and Surrey however some were made by the students themselves.

BBQ safety 101

(NC) Firing up the barbeque is synonymous with summer. While warm weather brings much to look forward to, it’s also a reminder to brush up on grilling safety measures. Eighty per cent of Canadian households own a grill or smoker, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association so, it’s important to take safety precautions.

Check out these four grilling safety tips before putting on your apron. Grill outside and away from structures. Position the grill well away from anything that can catch fire – like siding, deck railings and overhanging branches. Always make sure it’s set on an even surface in an open, well-ventilated area.

Clean and inspect your barbeque. Remove all grease buildup from the grills and the trays below the grill. If your grill uses charcoal, make sure it has cooled down completely before you dispose of it. Before and after each use, inspect all parts of the

grill for any needed maintenance or cracks.

Create a safe zone. You should never leave a lit grill unattended. For an extra level of protection, remind kids and pets to keep three feet away from the grill to help reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.

Be ready in the event of a fire. Even if you’re following safe grilling practices, you should always keep a fire extinguishing device nearby. Models with a spray can design, like the First Alert EZ Fire Spray, are quick and easy to use and easy to clean up.

Navigating the Canadian housing market: Tips for newcomers

(NC) Finding housing can be a big job, especially for newcomers to Canada. From budgeting for housing, researching neighbourhoods and deciding if it’s better for you to rent or buy a home, there’s a lot to consider when deciding where to live.

Research from RBC shows that aspirations of home ownership are considerably higher for newcomers to Canada than the average person. Here are tips to help you prepare to buy your first house.

Understand how much you can spend

Having a realistic idea of how much money you can afford to pay for housing is important. This will help you narrow your search and prevent you from overspending.

Make a budget by comparing your income to your monthly expenses. In addition to housing, groceries and transportation, account for the cost of

utilities like internet and cellphone, and a little extra for entertainment or a meal out once in a while.

Research neighbourhoods

It’s a good idea to research the area you want to live in to make sure it has access to the amenities and services you need, like schools, community centres and public transportation. You can learn a lot about a certain place by talking to people who live there or joining residents’ groups on social media. It’s also a good idea to take advantage of online tools that can help you determine the average costs to buy or rent based on neighbourhood and the size of the home.

To rent or buy?

If you have the means, you might consider purchasing a home rather than renting. Each has benefits, but your decision might depend on your current situation and financial goals.

Buying: If you have an established credit history and have saved a down payment, you might consider buying a home, which will help you build equity to tap into in the future (the value of the mortgage you’ve paid back each month). However, you may give up some flexibility. Unlike a rental, you can’t simply give notice to a landlord if you want to move. Plus, it can be harder to budget because maintenance costs and mortgage interest rates fluctuate.

Renting: Not owning may be less expensive and come with fewer responsibilities. With fixed monthly costs, you can free up more money to do other things like save or invest.

However, you aren’t building equity when you rent. Living in a rental also means you don’t have as much privacy or the freedom to renovate.

Whether you rent or buy is a big decision, but there are tools to help. A rent or buy calculator lets you input your rent and see how much of a mortgage you can afford for the same monthly amount. Some also show how much you could pay for a home.

The Patrika Auto Review:

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring- Top Buy in this Sector!

For decades now, the Honda Accord has been the ultimate go-to sedan for those looking for a well-rounded mid-size family ride. It has always delivered on the core values of safety, fuel economy, performance, and a legendary reputation for reliability. This is incredibly well sedan is now into its 10th generation design cycle and still selling as strong as ever . This year’s car gets a few updates, including a face-lift and the introduction of wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

.Boasting class-leading power and cabin space, the next-generation Accord Hybrid wholly embodies Honda’s unique approach to electrification – infusing fun-to-drive performance, efficiency, premium feature content, and comfort in a sophisticated and affordable package. Hybrid or otherwise, the Honda Accord PHEV (Plug in Electric Hybrid) receives some mild styling refresh for 2021 including a redesigned grille and new standard LED headlights. The exterior styling is still low key and conservative, just how Honda buyers like it and will age well. Not much has changed on the inside either. Just neat, tidy, and high quality.

The 2023 Accord Hybrid is powered by the latest third generation of Honda’s innovative two-motor hybrid powertrain, which pairs a 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle inline-4 engine with 40-percent thermal efficiency to an electric propulsion motor that delivers 232 lb.-ft. of torque. This is classleading total system output of 212 horsepower. which delivers 181 hp on its own along with 232 lb-ft of torque,

The Accord Hybrid lineup comes in two trim levels: Hybrid, and Hybrid Touring. The Accord Hybrid offers a lengthy list of standard equipment, including Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, remote start. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality is available along with a wireless phone charging pad

Pricing is up this year and a base

EX model now costs $37,000, The Accord Sport is $41,000 and the toplevel is now $44,500. The Touring model offers ventilated front seats with memory on the driver’s side, heated outboard rear seats, rainsensing wipers, onboard navigation, a head-up display, and a subscriptionbased in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.

Interior wise, High quality aluminum trim and leather trim offers a tasteful contemporary looking look. The finish is excellent all round in the front and rear cabin. Front legroom is good, , the rear features e 40:20:40 folding-seat option, the equipment levels are high with full power and creature comforts. but this Accord’s interior looks more BMW-like than ever before. The leather is of an extremely high standard, and h front seats are power-adjustable. Piano Black trim is a feature and still love that cool vent-hiding grille network across the dashboard

The touchscreen is nice 12.3 inches, and the Touring features Honda’s first integration of Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play are now standard.

Touring models get four powered USB-C ports (the lesser EX and Sport make do with just the two in the front) Connectivity and infotainment features include: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Navigation, 4G LTE Wi-Fi and a slew of apps, live-info, and remote-control features. Wireless charging, camera-image rear-view mirror are available.

Standard driver aids include driver-drowsiness and rear-traffic monitoring, lane-keep assist, semiautonomous park assist, auto highbeam assist and emergency braking.

The Accord Hybrid version includes Honda’s suite of safety technologies as standard equipment, which incorporates forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow function. On hybrid models, blindspot monitoring with rear cross-

traffic alert, automatic high-beams, driver attention alert, and automatic emergency response are also standard.

On the road, the Accord Hybrid Touring comes with an impressive adaptive damping system that delivers an outstanding ride, the car has a composed, even ride more like a highend Acura. The hybrids two-motor system delivers a glitch-free seamless experience. Helping to maximize energy generation are steering wheelmounted Deceleration Selectors. Like transmission paddle shifters, the Accord Hybrid’s Deceleration Selectors offers drivers four levels of regenerative braking performance. seamlessly shifting between EV Drive (100-percent electric motor), Hybrid Drive (electric motor and gasoline engine driving the generator motor) and Engine Drive (gasoline engine), using power from the

gasoline engine and electric motors. I also enjoyed the crisp handling, and precise linear steering. The change over from electric to gas engine is also a pretty seamless affair. Fuel Economy is rated at: (city / highway / combined) Accord Hybrid 5.0/5.1/5., Accord Hybrid Touring, 5.0/5.1/5.1.

To sum up, the Honda Accord is amongst the top sedans in its class. You get high equipment levels ,handling and driver satisfaction that beats cars costing at least $10,000 more. Stellar fuel economy in this hybrid model also makes it a good performer. Highly recommended for families and singles everywhere looking for a fuel sipping yet luxuriously appointed midsize sedan.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring is priced from $41,000 -$44,500. More info at www.honda. ca

Tips to take back time in

(NC) In our fast-paced world, the demands of daily life never seem to slow down. If you find yourself constantly behind on deadlines or struggling to stay on top of everyday tasks, here are four ways to save some time every day.

Track and organize your time

Make a list of all your recurring daily, weekly and monthly tasks. Then, track how much time you spend on each task. After a few weeks, you’ll have a clearer picture of which activities take up most of your time. Tracking your time can show you whether you can pass on some of those tasks to a colleague, an employee or outsource them to a third party.

Avoid the myth of multi-tasking

Many people claim to be great at multi-tasking and wear the title as a badge of honour. But researchers have repeatedly shown that it’s not possible to juggle complex tasks simultaneously without making mistakes. Research also suggests it takes longer to complete two jobs at once compared to focusing on completing one task at a time.

Schedule breaks

When you’re facing looming deadlines or struggling to complete a new pitch, it can be easy to

work through or skip lunch, push back a planned holiday or avoid going to the gym. But we all need some time to recharge our batteries. If you don’t take some time for yourself, you run the risk of burning out, which can have negative impacts on your health - and your job.

Automate routine tasks

If you run a business, tracking expenses, issuing invoices and following up on those that are overdue are key tasks for your financial well-being. But they are also time consuming. A cloud-based accounting program such as FreshBooks will automate many of those jobs, while safely storing these important details for you. Small business owners can also apply for grants from the Canada Digital Adoption Program to help fund cloud-based accounting solutions.

Find more information about how cloud-based accounting can help small businesses at freshbooks. com.

A way could be found to bring something to an end that has not been quite right or has been bothering you in some way. This would involve or affect matters that need to be dealt with on a regular basis. It will then leave you free to contemplate even reconsider, to mid September, what would be better. It might mean returning to old ways.

You could realise that something you have either been putting into place or want to put into place could do with some scaling down. This may come about because of what is important to somebody else. It will remove all doubt, making the future clearer. You might even go back to past ideas you had from now to mid September.

You have the opportunity to rethink anything, from now to mid September, that you have either been attempting to put in place or been under pressure to do so. Be brave and refuse, especially if a lot of responsibility falls your way. It will then free you up to decide for yourself and then communicate the obligations you are willing to take on.

A straightforward conversation with somebody else could work well in bringing to an end any sort of confusion they have been creating when it comes to the future. There can be something unexpected about it that will set your thinking down a different path. There is no rush to make any final decisions before mid September.

Being involved in something you enjoy might bring a lot of work with it but you won’t mind. There could be a connection to the past as well. Something from the past involving others and finances can arise. Any lack of clarity could be solved, though you might have to accept disappointment. It will allow you to move on.

Best you adopt a direct approach with any person who has been very good at avoiding matters because it is time to bring something to an end. This will enable you to see the commitments they are prepared to make, which may be at odds with what you would like. Take your time in considering your options to mid September.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes and it could be rather confusing. It might mean you need to put things important to you on hold until something becomes more evident. If you feel too much is expected of you, cut it back or drop it altogether. It will eventually bring some aspects out into the open that you can act on.

You could realise some things, more on the pleasurable side, are not as important as you thought and dropping them won’t be such a big deal. More serious things need to take priority and this might seem as though the past is repeating itself in some way to mid September. The difference is you now have more experience.

Something you had in mind might need to be dropped, mainly because there could be a lot more work, even expense, involved than seemed to be the case initially. You are in a good position, from now to mid September, to review the commitments that would be reasonable to take on so that a solid foundation is put in place.

If plans you have been attempting to put in place for the future have gone nowhere, it is time to forget them. If someone else was involved, their position may now become more obvious, as well as any commitments attached. This can clear things up in your own mind, leaving you in a position to make more straightforward decisions.

You need to be cautious when it comes to the true intentions of somebody else. Just have the patience to wait because something could come to an end of its own accord, relieving you of some anxiety. You need to maintain practicality when it comes to things you have under your own control. There is no need to be generous.

Be prepared for somebody else to change their mind in some way between now and mid September in a way where you could be left handling more responsibility. Involved in this could be something being brought to an end that might disappoint you. Hold back when it comes to making any promises. Best to wait and see.

Internet calls Ranbir a ‘red flag’

The internet is calling Ranbir Kapoor a red flag once again after wife Alia Bhatt’s latest revelation about their equation. In a new video for a magazine, she showed how she applies lipstick and tries to keep it faded and minimal because her husband ‘doesn’t like it’. She explains, her relationship with Ranbir, many did not think so. More than a few people called him a ‘red flag’, that’s what internet calls people who might not bring you the “Because one thing my husband… when he wasn’t my husband but when he was my boyfriend as well…

Shahid’s take on evolving stardom

Having been around for two decades, actor Shahid Kapoor has seen the definition of stardom change, especially with the rise of social media and OTT. Despite both of his recent projects on the medium Farzi and Bloody Daddy registering mostwatched numbers in their respective categories, the actor continues to place greater importance on an entirely different marker. “I have always craved to have the audiences’ respect. I feel once an artist, whether it’s a filmmaker or actor, even a sportsperson, has the people’s respect, they will be able to create consistency in their graph. Things are very unpredictable,” he says. “As an actor, you should not just presume that just because you are a star, people will like you across the board, it doesn’t work like that! The

he would be like ‘wipe that off, wipe that off ’ because he loves the natural colour of my lips.” While Alia thought she was sharing a cute detail about healthiest relationships. “If your bf/husband is telling you to wipe your lipstick that the biggest sign for you to run! It is not cute or funny at all!,” wrote one person in a comment. “I would never allow a guy who asks me to wipe off my lipstick anywhere close to me,” wrote another. “I can’t believe a top actress rubs off her expensive lipstick because her bf/ husband commented another.

Disha dons director’s hat

A ctor Disha Patani is the latest celebrity to don the director’s hat. She is all set to step into the world of directing with her debut music video, Kyun Karu Fikar. Announcing the same on Instagram, Disha dropped the teaser for the music video, which stars her. She also revealed that the full video will release August 21. Going by the teaser of Kyun Karu Fikar, the single music video talks about being carefree. It’s sung by Nikhita Gandhi. The music has been composed and produced by Vaibhav Pani while Vayu penned the lyrics. It also comes with a voiceover of Disha who directed the music video. Sharing the teaser, Disha wrote, “Within life’s mystery, where the future is unknown, could self-love be the key— the magic we’ve always known? Tune out the noise around you and say KyunKaruFikar Full video out on 21st August on playdmfofficial YouTube channel.” Responding to Disha’s new milestone, her rumoured ex boyfriend Tiger Shroff ’s mother Ayesha Shrof f commented, “Wowwwww! Congratulations deeeshu!” Her best friend Mouni Roy too cheered for her. Among others was Disha’s rumoured boyfriend Aleksandar Alex Ilic who wrote to her, “Congratulations Chiksi.”

audience has become very mature and clear about whom they like. I was keen to see how people respond to me in that space,” he says. Explaining the unpredictability further, he says, “There are highs and lows which I feel are very opposing in nature. You can see that happening to various actors who are super successful, and nothing is working.” The Jab We Met actor concludes off by saying, “As a leading man, it is important to understand how long you want to be here, and if you are playing the big game.”

Actress Nushrratt Bharuccha garnered praise for her acting skills when she acted alongside Ayushmann Khurrana in Dream Girl. Nevertheless, in the sequel, she was substituted with Ananya Panday. In response, Nushrratt has expressed that there is no reasoning or explanation for this change. Speaking to media, the Pyaar ka Punchnama actress said, “I was a part of Dream Girl and I love that whole team. I terribly miss working with them. But why they didn’t cast me in Dream Girl 2, I think only they can answer. I don’t know, there is no logic and there is no answer to it. But why didn’t they cast me? I am a human being, so of course it hurts. And of course it feels unfair. But I get it, it is their decision. Cool, no problem.” She also revealed, “I didn’t know my film was also going to be released on the same day as Dream Girl 2. But for some reason it got delayed. However, Raj sir (Dream Girl 2 director) wished me, ‘All the best’. And I responded to him saying, ‘Sir, something is connected in our universe. I wasn’t in your film, but my second film is releasing on the same day’. So we have come to a place where we can smile about it.” However, she praised the trailer of Dream Girl 2, and said that she hopes the film does well for everyone, from Ayushmann Khurrana to Ananya Panday.

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in an old interview ad shut down a journalist slamming reports of her rift ith Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. In 2004, when a journalist asked, “There is a feeling hat that you have just not been able to strike the right hord with the Khandaans, the Aamirs, the Salmans, he Shah Rukhs, and perhaps that’s not held you in good stead.” Ash shut him down calling it a drama. ooking irked by the questions, Rai hit back at him nd aid, “You guys enjoy this drama so you can keep this oing, it keeps you all entertained.” The journalist prods urther and asks her about being replaced in films like Mangal Pandey. Ash once again took the question ith dignity and told him, “Why don’t you just wait for n autobiography?” Soon after the video surfaced on he web, a user wrote, “What grace, what courage nd hat confidence. I am floored. Aishwarya can walk over me and I won’t complain. I love how she handled all he negativity and misogyny and patriarchy while still standing at the very top.”
