Archway International Women’s Day Celebration for Newcomer Women

The Community Connections program at Archway Community Services hosted its 11th annual event celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8th. Around 170 newcomer women enjoyed performances, speeches, dinner and gifts at Central Heights Church.

The evening was a celebration of connecting women and showcasing their strength and resiliency through culture and identity. Women shared stories of their journey to Canada and the difficulties that newcomer women are working to overcome with the help and support of Archway Community Services.

One of the speakers, Sokheng Pa, a journalist from Cambodia shared her

Lenore Baker from the Squamish Nation opened the celebration with her poem “Woman Warrior Take Flight.” Lenore’s poem honours Murdered Missing Indigenous Women and Girls and her hope is to bring awareness to the violence and abuse against all women.

“We are here in the spirit of unity and sisterhood,” said Lenore in her speech.

Lenore was joined on stage by Dawn Blacklock who immigrated twenty

Pa encouraged the audience to “stick to your goals” even in the face of adversity because you will always find support.

Community Connections client, Ramanjit Kaur Madahar tied the event’s theme into her speech, recounting all

of the women and program staff that had supported her as a single mother of three kids.

“I was juggling three different jobs to make ends meet. However, I was still living paycheque to paycheque. So sometimes at the end of the month, I only had $5 in my bank account and I felt completely helpless.”

After ten years in Canada, she was introduced to Archway and met the Community Connections staff who

listened to her and gave her resources to support her kids.

“Everyone helped me in different ways. They always lifted me up. So if you ever need help or advice, don’t hesitate, just reach out to them.”

Madahar now has a part-time job, while simultaneously running her own online business which allows her to spend the rest of her time with her family.

Representing other displaced Ukrainians, Olena Korotysh sang a traditional Ukrainian song and Lubov Plet played “Hava Nagila” a popular Jewish folk song on her violin.

In between performances, women donning their country’s traditional clothing were invited onto stage to educate the audience on their garments. Representing the diversity of the room, women brought to light the details of their Indigenous, Indian, Afghanistan, Cambodian, and Ukrainian cultural garb.

A group of dancers called Garba Group 5 performed an energetic dance called “Hellaro”. Originating from India, Garba is a dance that honors and celebrates femininity.

Returning for another year, the night also featured a group of women performing a Giddha dance, a popular folk dance from the Punjab region.

The emcee of the evening, Rupinder Padam, an Archway Community Connections Facilitator, said of the speakers, “It takes a lot of courage for our speakers to come on stage and share their difficult personal experiences. They are being an example for other women to find the power within themselves to keep going.”

Following the performances, participants enjoyed dinner and ended the night with a multicultural dance party.

“In a world where women continue to be disproportionately affected by challenges and barriers, it’s essential to recognize the power of lifting each other up, that’s why we chose this year’s event theme as Women Supporting Women. Whether it’s through mentorship, encouragement, or advocacy, women supporting women creates a ripple effect of positive change and paves the way for future generations,” said Marier.

“I want to say a huge thank you to the Archway Food Bank for donating beverages and gifts for attendees as well as Central Heights Church for allowing us to use their space and supporting the preparation of the event,” said Marier. “This event can only happen because of them and all of the 45 staff and volunteers who come together to prepare and organize the event each year.

Province creates clearer pathways for workers coming to B.C.

The Province is creating clearer pathways for international workers coming to B.C., making it harder for predatory recruiters and other bad actors to take advantage of people.

To do this, the Province is updating the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) selection criteria to better reflect the level of education, experience and language skills that set people up for career success in British Columbia. These updates will lead to better outcomes for people and help them understand what is required to be nominated for permanent residency in Canada through the BC PNP.

The BC PNP is one of several pathways available to newcomers who want to build a good life in British Columbia. It is the Province’s only tool for directly selecting immigrants for permanent residency. The program helps identify people who will strengthen B.C.’s economy and priori-

tizes workers in health care, construction, early childhood education and other in-demand jobs.

The BC PNP is competitive, but some recruiters misrepresent it as an easy pathway to permanent residency. These updates will give people a better understanding of the education, experience and language skills that they need to be considered for nomination.

The program updates align with new measures to protect international students from predatory institutions and recruiters, such as:

a new three-stream structure for graduates of bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate programs;

increased language requirements for most streams; and

continued prioritization for people who work in-demand jobs and bring economic benefit to B.C.

Fast’s EA Launches Campaign to be the

Conservative Party of Canada Candidate for Abbotsford–South Langley

Mike Murray, Executive Assistant to the Honourable Ed Fast, MP for Abbotsford, announced that he is seeking the nomination as the next Conservative Party of Canada candidate in the new electoral district of Abbotsford–South Langley.

“Canada is in decline and needs a way forward,” said Murray. “Freedom is on the ballot in our next election. We need a new conservative agenda that champions the great Canadian comeback. Canada needs a commonsense conservative leader like Pierre Poilievre to be our next Prime Minister.”

Mike Murray first became involved in conservative politics in 1984 and served as the president of the youth wing in Richmond–South Delta. He engaged in various campaigns in his early years before pursuing his education and career. After graduating from Summit Pacific College in Abbotsford, he served as a pastor until 2010.

“I am by nature a compassionate conservative. That means, as the MP for Abbotsford–South Langley, I will champion the groups of compassion and will be laser-focused on building up non-profits and volunteerism in our communities,” said Murray.

In 2010, Murray became a constituency assistant to MLA Marc Dalton in Maple Ridge–Mission. In 2011 he joined the team of MP Randy Kamp in Ottawa as an Assistant to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and then went back to the constituency as the Executive Assistant to MP Kamp until 2015. In 2015, he was Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s candidate for Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge. Following the 2015 federal election, Murray became the Executive Assistant to MP Fast. In 2018, he took a year off from Canadian politics and went to London, UK to work as a National Area Campaign Director for

the British Conservatives. In 2019, he returned to his role as the Executive Assistant to MP Fast. Murray also managed MP Fast’s successful reelection campaigns in 2019 and 2021.

Appreciation Cards to Abbotsford Regional Hospital Staff

Children in Switzerland participating in creative approaches to understanding globalisation have been learning about health care around the world. As such they have sent personalised appreciation cards dedicated to health care workers at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH).

Class B (grade 2) students, from Verbier International School, prepared the cards conveying their gratitude and recognition of the hard work of the diverse hospital team performing vital services. Verbier primary teacher, Thomas McNulty says, “it’s great for children to grasp the positive impact our hospital workers have in caring for those in need. This activity has helped our students understand our global communities and at the same time deliver a bit of kindness in the world”.

For ARH staff it was a touching moment when they received the thoughtful cards from Switzerland.

The cards serve as a reminder of empathy, compassion and connection in a world that is large but ever so

Ford Customers Can Now Charge on Tesla Superchargers in U.S. and Canada

Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E retail customers are the first of any non-Tesla automaker to gain access to Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada. According to a Cox Automotive Consumer Sentiment Study, lack of charging stations is the second largest barrier after price when it comes to purchasing an electric vehicle. As EV prices come down, improving access to reliable fast charging is critical to help more customers confidently choose an EV.

The 15,000+ available Tesla Superchargers more than double customer access to reliable DC fast charging on the BlueOval™ Charge Network. Ford is saying thank you to its electric vehicle customers by making the Fast Charging Adapter (NACS) available at no cost to new and existing customers enrolled in the BlueOval™ Charge Network through June 30, 2024. The Adapter is required to charge at upgraded Superchargers. Ford retail EV customers are the first

in the industry to have the opportunity to order the Fast Charging Adapter (NACS), and can reserve by visiting Ford.com/FastChargingAdapter.

Retail customers will be eligible to receive a complimentary adapter if ordered by June 30, 2024. Future Ford EV customers can purchase the adapter from Ford.

Ford Pro commercial customers will be contacted this Spring by mail at the address registered with Ford Pro or via their Ford Pro account manager to order an adapter.

The BlueOval™ Charge Network provides one seamless stored payment account through the FordPass App, or Charge Assist App in the vehicle’s touchscreen, which eliminates the need for onsite credit card use. Once owners have created an account and activated Plug & Charge, Tesla Superchargers will support Plug & Charge with Ford EVs. This means customers simply have to plug in and

charging will automatically start with charges managed through FordPass.

In the future, Ford will begin offering next-generation electric vehicles with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector built-in, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Superchargers.

Locating and Activating Upgraded Superchargers

Ford customers can use the FordPass App on in-vehicle Charge Assist App to locate chargers, including new

New parking, amenities ready for commercial truckers in Surrey

Commercial long-haul drivers travelling through the Lower Mainland will soon have another safe, convenient place to stop and rest when the North Surrey Truck Parking Facility opens next week just off Highway 17 (South Fraser Perimeter Road).

“Commercial long-haul drivers are the lifeblood of our supply chain, and it’s important they’re supported with infrastructure that allows them to do their jobs safely, efficiently and comfortably,” said Rob Fleming, B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “The new North Surrey Truck Parking Facility is an important addition for commercial drivers travelling to and through the Lower Mainland, as it provides another safe, secure and convenient place to stop and rest.”

The new North Surrey Truck Parking Facility is on Highway 17, about 600 metres east of the Port Mann Bridge. The facility is scheduled to open to commercial long-haul truckers on March 28, 2024.

The site was chosen for its proximity to major Lower Mainland truck routes. The secured site has parking for 106 commercial trucks, and includes facilities such as washrooms with showers, a sani-dump for drivers, and security measures, such as fencing, cameras and 24-hour security.

“Providing adequate parking facilities for commercial drivers to rest and recharge is vital to enhance safety in B.C.’s commercial trucking industry,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association. “This is a great facility that I am confident will be extensively used. I am also pleased to hear that the Province is exploring additional parking options for commercial vehicles as it improves the Highway 1 corridor through the Fraser Valley.”

Abbotsford Regional Hospital in Dire Need of Wheelchairs for Patients with Reduced Mobility

The pandemic may long be gone in the minds of many, but our hospitals are still faced with shortage of medical equipment. Everyday we see the impact of not having enough equipment for our population needs, but Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation is committed to helping deliver excellence in health care.

Today, there is a pressing need for making our hospital in Abbotsford as accessible as possible for persons of limited mobility.

In 2008, Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) had 88 basic wheelchairs in circulation to support patient care and staff safety. This number according to occupational therapist—clinical lead—Nicole Koehn, “has dwindled down to 40 wheelchairs for all our acute units. With approximately 400 Acute Care beds at ARH, 40 wheelchairs are simply not meeting our patient and staff needs. Not having adequate wheelchairs available on the

units limits staff ability to get their patients out of bed to support early mobilization and prevent deconditioning, and other hospital acquired impairments”.

Our local hospital needs your help today to help provide safe quality care to patients-in-need. The 40 wheelchairs, including the speciality equipment, and cushions costs approximately: $206, 500.00.

As Koehn reminds us, “quality of care is significantly impacted when a patient’s ability to leave their room to enjoy amenities such as, green spaces and live music (in the atrium) is negated. We need your help to get wheelchairs back on the units at ARH. Let’s give patients the equip-

ment they need to focus on their wellness goals while they recover in hospital”.

Nearly 2,000 new homes coming for people in B.C.

Nearly 2,000 new affordable homes are on the way for renters in Metro Vancouver, through partnerships between the Province and local nonprofit housing providers.

“Everyone deserves a decent home they can actually afford,” said Premier David Eby. “That’s why we’re taking unprecedented actions to rapidly build more affordable housing throughout the province, including through the Community Housing Fund. This latest round of funding will bring much-needed homes to every region of our province – from our fastest-growing cities to rural and remote areas – helping everyone find a decent home in the community they love.”

A total of 17 new projects in Metro Vancouver have been selected through the third intake of the Building BC: Community Housing Fund (CHF). The proposed projects will provide a total of 1,954 affordable rental homes for individuals, families, seniors, people living with disabilities and Indigenous people in B.C.

“Through our Homes for People action plan, we are taking action to deliver affordable housing faster, and the Community Housing Fund is a key part of the plan,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “These new homes mean that more people in B.C. will benefit from affordable homes in the communities they love, where they can grow their families and age in place.”

The announcement took place at 7567-140 St. in Surrey, the future site of an affordable housing project that will be operated by Kekinow Native Housing Society. Expected to be completed in late spring 2024, the project previously received CHF funding for Phase 2 of the development to build more than 100 homes for Indigenous people. The society will be receiving CHF funding for another project as one of the successful proponents from the CHF call for proposals issued in fall 2023.

“On behalf of the Kekinow board of directors, we would like to thank Premier Eby and BC Housing for supporting our work to provide safe and affordable housing to Indigenous

people in Surrey,” said Rupinder Cheema, CEO, Kekinow Native Housing Society. “This project will add 62 affordable housing units to help reduce the gap between demand and supply. The project approval by the Province is a step forward to help with social determinant of wellness.”

Including these projects, the Province, through BC Housing, has identified more than 40 new projects to move forward, totalling approximately 3,500 affordable rental homes. Additional projects on Vancouver Island, in the Interior and North will be announced later this week. This brings the total to 12,500 affordable rental homes that are already open or

underway through the CHF program since its launch in 2018.

“The Kekinow Native Housing Society provides a safe place to raise our children, where we feel safe and supported,” said Philip Gladue, a renter in Surrey. “As a community, we continue to work with Kekinow to help them in their ongoing support for the Indigenous community and welcome this new project.”

The Community Housing Fund is part of a $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the Province has nearly 78,000 homes that have been delivered or are underway.

B.C. takes action to hold companies accountable for hurting people

The Province is going after wrongdoers to recover the costs of publichealth harms their products cause to people.

The public health accountability and cost recovery act will provide the tools necessary for the government to recover costs associated with the promotion, marketing and distribution of products that are harmful to adults and children in British Columbia.

Building on the Province’s previous legislation to enable litigation against tobacco and opioid manufacturers, this act further enshrines the robust role of the attorney general to engage in proactive litigation on behalf of the public.

“Our government previously warned social media giants, tobacco, drug companies and other big faceless corporations that we would be taking

action to hold them accountable for the harm they are causing to people, including kids,” said Premier David Eby. “My message is simple: Here in B.C., we expect you to operate in a way that doesn’t hurt people, period.”

With this legislation, government will be able to claim public costs, such as hospital treatments and doctor appointments, as well as proactive and preventative measures used to address the risk of disease, illness or injury. In addition to companies as a whole, directors and officers of those companies can be held liable.

“Too many people in B.C. are living with negative health impacts from products they should be able to trust,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General.

“Once this new legislation passes, we will be able to sue more wrongdoers, as we’ve done successfully with

tobacco and opioid companies, and keep more people in B.C. healthy and safe.”

The legislation provides a way for government to go after social media companies for the harms their algorithms cause people, especially kids. If passed, the legislation will also ap-

ply to companies producing products designed to create addiction, particularly in children and young adults.

This new legislation represents one more tool in a cross-government effort to keep people safe and healthy throughout the province.

Protect your vehicle

UFV berry expert appointed Canada Research Chair

As climate change continues to threaten food security, the world looks for answers. In Canada, the federal government is seeking expert insight from Dr. Lauren Erland, Director of Berry Horticulture Research at UFV. Erland was recently appointed a Canada Research Chair, Tier 2. Supported by federal funding, she’s spending the next five years studying climate resilience of berry horticultural systems and ecosystems.

The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program is part of a national strategy to make Canada a top country in research and development. It’s designed to recruit and retain the world’s most innovative scholars and fund groundbreaking research which has positive, tangible impacts on Canadian lives. Erland is thrilled to become the third current UFV professor in the CRC program, along with Dr. Keith Carlson and Dr. Cindy Jardine.

“I’m excited to do this, and I’m particularly excited to do this at UFV,” Erland says. “The agriculture program is one of our flagship programs, and to be able to help that program grow is a great opportunity. And to do this in the Fraser Valley is significant too because the Fraser Valley produces most of British Columbia’s berry crops. We’re surrounded by all that, which means we’ve basically got a living lab in everyone’s field.”

Garry Fehr, UFV AVP Research and Graduate Studies, is equally enthusiastic.

“UFV is very pleased to receive the support and funding from the Canada Research Chair Program, which enables the university to support sustainable economic development of the agriculture sector and enhance the region’s food security. This wouldn’t be possible without the funding and dedicated time for research that these programs support,” he says.

BC’s cranberry sector produces $37 million in farm cash receipts, and the blueberry sector has an annual economic impact of over $7 billion each year. But despite being high value with established nutritional and health benefits, Erland said relatively little is known about environmental adaptations of berry species. She calls this a critical gap in understanding climate resilience.

“This research will enable us to answer questions like which varieties perform well under climate change? Which suffer? Why? And can we mitigate these effects?” Erland explains.

As an example, she says using in-field warming experiments with cranberries, we can simulate 2°C warming that crops are expected to experience after climate change. Previous research Erland has done has produced computermodelled predictions on how future climate conditions will impact the viability of existing cranberry growing regions. The next step includes comparing predictions with what happens in the field.

“We might find that the plants produce 30 per cent less cranberries in the climate we expect to have 20 years from now,” Erland says.

If research can determine why that happens, research can then develop field-level interventions.

“Maybe there’s a new product we can suggest, or maybe there’s a new variety that’s more resilient,” Erland muses. “Maybe we find ways to better protect plants at a certain time of year to mitigate those effects.”

“It’s going to be a cool resource, not only for our students, but also for our regional agriculture industry partners.”

Erland will be conducting her research in a renovated space on the UFV Chilliwack campus at Canada Education Park. The Berry Environmental Resilience Research & Innovation (BERRI) lab in building Q will provide 980 square feet outfitted with state-ofthe-art tech that will allow Erland to examine plants and berries down to a single molecule.

“My favourite part of my job is getting to play with plants,” Erland says with a smile. “This will be the first tech of its kind that we have at UFV, so it will be cool to share that with students. I’ve been joking that I’d like to get over to that building with a sledgehammer and start renovating myself because I can’t wait to get into that space.

The BERRI lab is partially funded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The CFI is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada that invests in research facilities and equipment in Canada’s universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions. The CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund has contributed $617,125 to the construction of the lab and purchase of tools and instruments.

In addition to Erland, Carlson and Jardine, UFV’s Dr. Lenore Newman and Dr. Hugh Brody are past Canada Research Chairs.

City of Abbotsford allocates more than $1.78 million for homelessness prevention projects

Through federal Reaching Home program funding, the City of Abbotsford has been able to allocate more than $1.78 million in funding for projects that work towards helping vulnerable people attain and stay in safe, sustainable and affordable housing. The allocation of these funds comes following a two-year renewal of Abbotsford’s status as a Designated Community through the Government of Canada’s Reaching Home program.

Of the 19 applications received, five local capital, service and shelter-diversion projects were selected to receive

funding by Abbotsford’s Reaching Home Community Advisory Board, which is made up of various stakeholders representing and/or serving the different population groups of those experiencing or at risk of homelessness in our community. These projects were selected for their focus on reducing the return to homelessness for at-risk individuals, providing wraparound supports and outreach services to help keep vulnerable people housed, and adding additional supportive housing spaces for those experiencing homelessness to move into.

These Reaching Home projects will take place in 2024 and 2025 with the funding spread over the same period.

An additional $212,838 of Reaching Home funding remains for future considerations, like data collection and coordination or resources, and will be allocated and disbursed by the Community Advisory Board later this year.

Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy, is a community-based program aimed at preventing and reducing homelessness by providing support and funding to urban, Indigenous, territorial and rural and remote

communities across Canada. The City of Abbotsford became a Designated Community under the Reaching Home program in June 2020.

Developing our Reaching Home coordinated access system and implementing the City’s Homelessness Action Plan supports Council’s strategic goal of addressing social issues that impact our community, and strengthens responses to homelessness in Abbotsford. An annual Secondary Suites Program fee of $60 and applicable utility user fees will be applied to the property tax notice.

All secondary suites in Mission must now be registered with the Cit y

The Secondary Suites Program will help the City of Mission gain greater insight into housing population concentrations.

Registrations received before April 2, 2024 will not require inspections. An annual Secondary Suites Program fee of $60 is being collected to support the administration and response to issues related to suites in the community.
