O
n our cover this month is Dena Rowe and her daughter, Lexie (9). Dena is celebrating the holidays with her dogs, Tanzy a Cane Corso, and Ebony a Giant Schnauzer. Ebony is in Lexie’s lap. Dena doesn’t just love her fur babies, she has family members with feathers, too! On her shoulder is Rio, her Blue & Gold Macaw. Dena’s love of animals led her to opening FurKidz Pet Hotel, Spa, and Daycamp, a fullservice animal care facility that offers a pet hotel, daycamp, spa and more! “I have always loved animals and knew my calling would be taking care of them in some aspect. I have a master’s degree in Agriculture from Murray State University and graduated from Exotic Animal Training School in Oviedo, Florida. I have also completed training for wildlife rehabilitation. I have never been happier than when I am taking care of animals of all shapes and sizes.” “The idea for FurKidz came to me in 2013,” explained Dena. “We were planning a trip abroad and I wasn't happy with the options for boarding pets in McCracken County. I decided that what I needed to do was open my own facility. While I was on vacation, I didn’t want my pets to be shut up in a kennel all day. My vision was a pet hotel with plenty of room for the dogs to play and socialize!
"When I started planning my new business, FurKidz, I wanted to be able to use my strengths which include animal science, technology and customer service. In December 2013, my dream became a reality and FurKidz, Pet Hotel, Spa, and Daycamp opened for business. I wanted to give people a higher standard when it came to pet boarding and day camping. I wanted a business I could be proud of and a place where I felt good about leaving my fur-kids.

The FurKidz Difference
Whether you need pet care for a day or a week, check out FurKidz! “The biggest difference you’ll notice between a pet hotel and traditional kennel is that we offer cage-free environment,” explained Dena. FurKidz offers quality pet care and furnishes a fun, clean, enjoyable atmosphere at an affordable price. They provide top-quality dog suites in a cage free environment. The suites are stainless steel and tempered glass, and range in size from 3’ x 5’, to a large family suite which is 4’ x 10’. Each has elevated beds as well as elevated water and food bowls. FurKidz has real-time webcams, ambient music, a climate-controlled facility with plenty of fresh air, and large, secured play yards. The yards feature artificial turf. FurKidz also offers special cat accommodations in their luxurious cat condos. “We know that every fur-kid is unique,” said Dena. “We cater to each specific pet’s needs. Our senior fur-kids require special attention as do our younger ones. We offer loving care to dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish and any other type of animal for which you may need assistance. Pocket pets are always welcome as long as you bring their habitat and food.”
Daycamp
FurKidz supervised doggie daycamp was developed to give your furkid a safe, fun, and interactive playtime with other fur-kids. Your pooch will be paired with other FurKidz campers of the same size, age, and temperament. Playgroups are determined by those three specifications. All dogs are assessed by qualified staff prior to their inclusion in a playgroup. Daycamp participants must be on a flea prevention program, be in good health, and at least 12 weeks of age. A typical schedule for daycamp includes a morning outside “potty break”, breakfast (bring their own food), a morning nap in their private room, followed by mid-morning group or individual playtime based on your fur-kid’s specific needs. After a mid-day rest, your fur-kid will have another afternoon group or individual playtime, followed by dinner, and if requested an after dinner potty break. Daycamp is available Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and can be added to your boarding reservation. (It’s not available on major holidays.)
Boarding
FurKidz Pet Hotel has (almost) all the comforts of home! Boarders have at least four complementary trips outside in the play yard and two meals a day (unless otherwise noted). And, there are so many extras available! You can choose from 30 extra minutes of one-on-one time, one or two pet group play sessions, or a turn-down service (10 extra minutes of cuddle time and a bedtime treat). Sign up for real-time webcams, pet photos, or a personalized email with a daily progress report. You can even purchase Yoghund frozen treats or gourmet cookies for you fur-kid. A go home bath is a nice extra and any boarding client staying for seven days or longer are offered a bath at half-price. A progress report/verbal briefing is given to each pet owner upon departure to let you know how your fur-kid enjoyed their stay. FurKidz requires proof of appropriate vaccinations for all boarders and day campers. Vaccinations should be administered at least 10 days before arrival.
Spa & Grooming Services
FurKidz provides the ultimate grooming experience - your pet’s own spa day designed to fit his/her individual needs. “Our goal is to ensure a positive grooming attitude combined with pampering and play,” explained Dena. “Because every fur-kid has their own unique grooming challenges, we offer

free, no-obligation consultations. Furry felines and giant canines are always welcome!” Spa and grooming services include shampoo and bath, nail trim or grinding, a pedicure with color, anal gland expressing, soft claws (full or front only), and a collar wash. Grooming and bathing usually takes two hours. Rates are determined by size and condition of the coat. As with all services at FurKidz, you can choose to pamper your fur-kid just a little more! Other amenities include hair color, hair, skin and coat treatments, and aromatherapy. You can be assured that FurKidz never uses sedation, just a lot of love. “I can happily say FurKidz is a success!” Dena told me. “We currently have eight employees and have had over 5,000 pets use our services since we opened. We offer first class customer service to anyone with any type of animal, including pot-bellied pigs, reptiles, birds and small mammals. Every day is an adventure but FurKidz can handle it!” “I love to share a story about one of our customers who stopped by to pick up his little Dachsund from boarding,” said Dena. “He normally had a carrier for the little guy but forgot it. After checking out, he put the dog in his truck and came back into FurKidz to get his receipt. When he left, his fur-kid had locked the doors of the truck! Of course, the keys were in the ignition and the truck was running. I came out to see if I could help, as this had happened to me once before with my Jack Russell. I told him how I played with my dog through the window and she ended up jumping on the door handle unlocking the door! I knew this was a long shot but it was worth a try. I was relieved when it worked a second time and the Dachsund rolled down the window. We got the keys - it was truly amazing!” “Of course FurKidz wouldn't be successful without the hard work and dedication from our managers, Eric Chandler and Tisha Milheiser,” said Dena. “Eric (Manager/Groomer), just celebrated four years with FurKidz and Tisha (Assistant Manager), is going on two years. We’re also fortunate to have Whitley Devary (Managers Assistant), Libby DuPriest (Senior Resort Coordinator), Laurie Verbaere (Senior Customer Service), Ashley Holmes (Resort Coordinator), Janet Scott (Customer Service), and Peyton Hartig (Groomer).” For more information about FurKidz staff, their backgrounds, training and qualifications, please visit the furkidzhotel.com/our-pack page on their website. FurKidz is committed to giving back to the community and helps out our local rescue groups by providing resources and monetary donations to many rescues. Most recently, FurKidz donated towels, blankets, cleaning products, food and treats to the Humane Society of McCracken County for the recent Chihuahua rescue.

Whitehaven
Whitehaven is a majestic landmark that is cherished by the citizens of Paducah and the surrounding areas. This gracious mansion was once destined to be destroyed, but was saved by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The Transportation Cabinet saw a vision for this grand old home and restored it to an award winning Welcome Center. Whitehaven possesses great architectural and historical significance. The main portion of the house, which was a two-story brick structure built in the 1860s by Edward L. Anderson, a tobacco farmer and dealer. The residence remained in the Anderson’s family until 1903. It was then sold to Ed L. Atkins, who was a cashier for the American German Bank in downtown Paducah. According to the McCracken County deed records, the property was conveyed to Mr. Atkins by Norton B. Anderson on April 7, 1903 for the sum of $4,000. In 1908 James P. Smith, mayor of Paducah, purchased the home. The Smith Family lived here until 1968. The house went through approximately 20 years of no real upkeep and was heavily vandalized until 1981 when the State of Kentucky bought it and restored the home. It opened in 1983 as the only Welcome Center in the United States that sits inside a private residence. In March of 1984, Whitehaven was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. That same year, a local group

P
rom is an event that many teenagers dream of and most adults remember well. The make-up, the hair, the shoes, and of course the dress! Thanks to the Tim Tebow Foundation, Heartland Church (HC) Heartland Worship Center (HWC), and other area organizations partnering together, the prom experience is available for our area’s most special guests to enjoy. On Friday, February 7, HC HWC will open its doors for Night to Shine (NTS). This is the third year that HC HWC has hosted the event for special needs youth, adults, and their families. It’s an incredible and unforgettable experience - from the red carpet to the dance floor, there’s something for everyone and every age. NTS is not limited to school-aged guests, and last year, the oldest guest was over 70 years old! Every guest is treated as a celebrity. Once checked in, they are matched with their own personal buddy for the evening. As a pair, they visit different Glam Stations where hair and make-up can be touched up and shoes shined. Each guest also receives a boutonniere or corsage. Cheered on by the paparazzi, proud parents and caregivers, each duo takes their turn waving to the crowd as they walk along the Red Carpet on their way to the dance floor. A formal, catered meal is provided for guests, their buddy, and their caregivers. At the end of the night, guests are given a crown or tiara and proclaimed King or Queen of the Prom. “A separate room is set up for parents and caregivers to sit down to a quiet, uninterrupted meal,” said Bryan Phelps, Pastor to Children and Families with HC HWC. “They can talk with other caregivers and take an evening to relax.”

Fun for Everyone
If cutting a rug isn’t your thing, there are many other ways for guests to have fun. Activity rooms with board games, karaoke, and crafts are available for anyone who wants a change of pace from the dance floor. Special sensory rooms are set up to accommodate guests who may be feeling a bit overwhelmed by the noise and excitement. In addition, headphones are available to any guest who may be overstimulated by the noise.
Your Help is Needed
“It takes about 400 volunteers to pull this off, and every volunteer tells us what a huge blessing it is,” Phelps said. “Volunteers are needed in every area – from making phone calls confirming guest reservations and working Glam Stations, to making corsages and serving the meal.” The largest volunteer need is for buddies to accompany each guest for the night. There are no certifications or skill qualifications needed for buddies other than age. Buddies under 16 need a guardian to be present, while those over 16 can come alone. Pairs are typically made at random. However if you personally know a guest, the buddy or caregiver can request the match up. Both corporate and personal sponsorships are welcomed and appreciated. “It costs roughly $40 per guest, and an additional $ 75 to $100 if assistance is needed for attire or alterations,” Phelps said. Sponsors can donate to the event itself or sponsor an individual guest. Donations such as formal wear, new or unused cosmetics, and hair supplies such as hairspray are also appreciated.
Appropriate Attire Provided
Some families may not be able to provide an outfit for their guest. Upon registering, caregivers can simply acknowledge on the form they need assistance with attire. Together, the guest and their family can pick out the dress, tuxedo, shoes, and accessories they like best beforehand at HC HWC.
Be Our Guest!
The 2018/2019 event had 128 guests, and this year the goal is to have at least 130. To register a guest, volunteer as a buddy, or for any other event information visit heartlandpaducah.com/nts. You can also reach Bryan Phelps at 270.534.1400 Night to Shine is an annual event held on the Friday night prior to Valentine’s Day and simultaneously hosted by many churches across the globe. Let's Stop Bullying
W
ere you bullied in school? Do you know a child who is being bullied? Kentucky students experience bullying more severely than students in 35 other states. A report from BackgroundChecks.org that examined bullying statistics in 44 states ranked Kentucky as the ninth most bullied state overall. This is a serious issue for our children - bullying can have tragic and long-lasting results.
So, What Is Bullying?
“Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance,” according to the website stopbullying.gov. “The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. “Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems. In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include: •
An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power - such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity - to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
•
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.”
"My Child Is Being Bullied"
It’s sad to say that the ugly face of bullying can begin as early as kindergarten. Once children reach their pre-teens and puberty hormones kick in, bullying increases. Grades five through middle school are the prime-time years. This is when parents need to be vigilant and watch for warning signs. Children who are being bullied will often show warning signs and it’s very important that parents and teachers talk with them to identify the root of the issue. These warning signs can also point to other issues or problems, such as depression or substance abuse. Look for unusual changes in your child. Do they have unexplainable injuries, lost or damaged personal items, frequent headaches or stomach aches - real or imagined - or changes in eating habits? Your child may have declining grades, or not want to go to school. They may tell you that they don’t have friends or avoid social situations. If you notice feelings of helplessness or decreased self-esteem, self-

destructive behaviors, self-harm, or talk of suicide don’t ignore the problem. Get them help right away!
Don't Stay Silent!
Statistics from the 2012 Indicators of School Crime and Safety show that an adult was notified in less than half (40%) of bullying incidents – not surprising as most bullying happens when adults are not around. A child being bullied should tell an adult immediately. Assure them they do not have to stand up to the bully by themselves. Teachers and counselors will help them find a solution. Ask your child what can be done to make them feel safe and develop a game plan. Communication with the school is very important. Stay in contact with your child’s teachers, making sure you work together to reassure your child their safety is your primary concern. If your child witnesses bullying, encourage them to intervene by finding an adult quickly to help the victim.
"My Child Is A Bully!"
It may be hard for any parent to acknowledge that their child is a bully. There are as many complex reasons why bullying happens. A main reason could be if a child doesn’t feel as if they fit in. Other significant reasons might include a difficult situation at home, abuse, stress, or anxiety in their lives. Increasing aggression, blaming others for their own problems, not accepting responsibility or getting in trouble at school are often red flags of being the bully. First, make sure your child understands their actions are wrong. Explain that bullying is taken very seriously and will not be tolerated. It’s important for parents and other role models to show respectful, calm behavior themselves during the process. “Just because your child is a bully does not mean they’re a bad kid," shares Rebecca Fountain, LPA with the Center for Specialized Children’s Services at Four Rivers Behavioral Health. “Nor does it mean you’re a bad parent. It means they have a situation in which they’re crying out for help.”
Cyber Bullying
While schools are the most common environment for bullying, it can happen anywhere. Cyber bullying includes social media, cell phones, email or instant messaging. Whether it’s on social media or online gaming, if you see frustration or anger from your child after being online this could be a warning sign. “Cyber bullying is becoming more prevalent because of the technology we have at our fingertips,” Fountain said. “It is so important for parents to be aware of what’s happening on their child’s social media accounts. It’s not uncommon for kids to create a fake Facebook or Instagram account that parents and relatives view, yet have a separate account under another name or email address that their friends access. Make sure you know all of your child’s social media information!” Talk with your child about social media posts and remind them to think about what they post. They should not share things that could hurt or embarrass anyone. Passwords should absolutely not be shared with their friends. Let them know you will respect their privacy, but also will keep a check on their information.
Never Ignore Bullying
While it’s important not to ignore bullying, your child should never escalate the issue to a physical conflict. Resist the urge to contact the parents of the bully as this could make matters worse. Instead, let the school or other officials act as your mediator. Whether face-to-face or cyber bullying, both can have serious adverse effects on a child’s mental and physical well-being. When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior, they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time. Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy. For information on bullying such as the warning signs, how to help your child understand bullying, communication tips and more, visit stopbullying.org. iSUPPORT by Cassie Johnson
no one should be cold. We want this project to give to those with the most need in our community a way to stay warm and to give them hope.” Last year 1,000 items were donated, and all gone within 48 hours! Inspired by the kindness of those who are willing to help, organizers are hoping to exceed that number of items this year. Several female inmates at the McCracken County Jail have already donated nearly 100 hats and scarves they personally knitted.
Scarf in the Park
“The Scarf in The Park project first began in Indiana and quickly spread around the country,” explained Kijsa Housman, owner of MAKE. “I believe that each of us, as friends and neighbors, should continuously look for even the smallest ways we can reach out to those in need throughout the year, and especially around the holidays.”
Donate Before The Day
Christmas Eve is a busy day, and perhaps your schedule with family events may not leave time for you to attend, but you can still help. Scarves, hats, gloves, and socks may be dropped off at any of the following collection points: Bob’s Drive-In, Cindy’s Flowers, Compass Counseling, Global Wine & Spirits, House to Home Creations, MAKE, McCracken County Public Library, River Discovery Center, and Simply B Gifts.
O
n cold, blustery, Winter days most of us find some warmth and comfort from wearing hats, gloves, scarves and thick socks. However, not everyone in our community have such blessings. Did you know that the number one item requested in homeless shelters is a new pair of socks?! The Guess Foundation and MAKE are partnering together again this year to spread Christmas cheer to those in need. The third Scarf in the Park event will be held at 2pm on December 24th, Christmas Eve. The event is held around Dolly McNutt Plaza, located across from Paducah City Hall. Trees in the area will be decorated with items such as scarves, hats, gloves, and socks. Items are hung for the homeless and families in need to simply remove from the trees and take home. As many of our homeless residents spend time at the McCracken County Library, the Dolly McNutt Plaza is the perfect location. All of the items will have personalized messages pinned on them – expressions of support while showing the Christmas spirit.
“We believe this event can become a treasured tradition in our community,” said Susan Guess, Co-Founder of the Guess Foundation. “Morgan, Kijsa, and I believe that Christmas is truly about giving. This is a meaningful and memorable way to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.” Christmas Eve has been sunny the past two years and organizers are hoping for the same weather this year. To ensure items will not ruin due to snow or rain, follow the Guess Anti-Bullying Facebook page for any changes due to inclement weather. If you would like to write a personalized note for the donations, contribute a hat, scarf, gloves or socks, or host a collection box, please contact Susan Guess at susan@paducahbank.com or call 270.210.2434.

Better To Give Than To Receive
This event is designed so that the givers and receivers can mingle in a spirit of love and friendship if they wish. Donors can bring items to decorate the trees beginning at 1pm. Some of the receivers of these precious gifts are usually in attendance and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa with givers. However, organizers and those donating are encouraged to only stay for a little while. This is to respect the privacy of those in need who wish to remain anonymous. “We know there are people in our community who will have nowhere to go on Christmas Eve," said Morgan Guess, Co-Founder of the Guess Foundation. "We also know they may be cold, and likely sad and lonely. When we thought about hosting this project, we thought Christmas Eve would be the best night to show them they are seen and cared about. No one should go without a present, and we believe

he fall leaves have changed, and an Arctic blast has dumped some unseasonably early snow on us! That must mean the holidays are around the corner. It’s not too early to be thinking about your food options for your Christmas and New Year’s celebrations and those cold winter nights to follow. My holiday will be spent at home with my wife, our fur babies, my sister-in-law, and possibly a few new friends. I’ll be cutting down on
the scale of the feast, and concentrating on some favorites using the freshest ingredients I can find. I’m not going to tell you how to roast a turkey or prepare a ham. There are about as many recipes for those traditional dishes as there are shapes of snowflakes! A quick Internet search or peek at those cookbooks in the corner of your kitchen will give you a multitude of options. I am going to recommend a few interesting side dishes that we like as options instead of plain green beans or kernel corn – and these can be made ahead of time. I wouldn’t describe my household as vegetarian, but we certainly like our meals to be vegetable centric. Most dinners have two or three veggie options with a protein of the day. Some vegetables you may not have considered as holiday faire are Delicata squash, cauliflower, or rutabagas (aka Swedes). A few recipes will follow that we enjoy in the iCook home.
Warming Up The Cold Winter Nights
After you’ve opened all the gifts, cleaned up the mess and settled down for that long winter nap, you get a bit peckish (British for hungry). It’s the perfect time for some hearty soup. Chili is always a favorite, but consider switching gears and make some homemade tomato, butternut squash, or carrot and ginger soup to mix things up a bit. I also love beer cheese soup, but it can be quite heavy on the stomach. Soup is a great way to warm the spirit and body. There’s nothing like the smell of a pot of soup simmering when you walk in after a cold, blustery winter day. Not all soups take hours to prepare, but don’t rule out the ones that do. You can prep a pot of chili in the morning and put it in a crock pot to slowly simmer all day. Remember to wear layers, stay warm, hug the ones you love and eat well. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from iCook and Purchase Area Family Magazine.

Butternut Squash and Parsnip Soup with Thyme Serves 6
3 TBSP butter 1 Two pound butternut squash, unpeeled and halved lengthwise, seeded and cut into eight pieces 1 pound of Parsnips, peeled and cut crosswise into 2 inch pieces with the thick ends cut in half ¼ cup water 1 onion halved and thinly sliced
As the vegetables are cooling, melt the remaining 2 TBSP of butter in a large skillet or stock pot over medium heat. Add the onion and thyme and sauté until golden, about 10 minutes. If you don’t have an immersion mixer, scrape the roasted squash off the peel and add it, the parsnips and onion mixture to a food processor or blender. Puree it until smooth and place it back into a stock pot. Add the stock and cream and mix until smooth with a whisk. If you have an immersion mixer, you can add the roasted squash (without the peel) and the other ingredients directly into the pot you used to sauté the onions as well as about 2 cups of the chicken broth. Blend until smooth then add the remaining broth and cream and blend again.
2 tsp minced fresh thyme or ¾ tsp dried 4 cups chicken broth 1 cup half and half cream
Preheat the oven to 375 F. Butter a large roasting pan with 1 TBSP of butter. Arrange squash pieces, skin side up, in the prepared pan. Add the parsnips and the water to the pan. Cover with foil and bake in

the oven about 50 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Allow them to cool.
Season with salt and pepper and serve hot. This soup will keep a few days in the refrigerator in a closed container. I would pair it with a savory sandwich or possibly a green salad for a light and delicious lunch.

to boil over high heat and blanch the cauliflower for 2 to 3 minutes. Drain in a colander for about 5 minutes. In a large non-stick skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the bread crumbs and cook, stirring constantly, until all the butter is absorbed and the crumbs are toasted, 2 to 5 minutes or until as brown as you like without burning. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream and flour. Add the cauliflower, capers, pancetta, and ½ cup of the cheese. Mix together and season with salt and pepper. Pour the mixture into the baking dish. Sprinkle the toasted crumbs (I typically don’t use all the crumbs). Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and drizzle with olive oil. Bake the Gratinata for 35 to 40 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the top is golden brown.

Beer Cheese Soup Courtesy of Joe at the Cookeville Country Club circa 1988
3 cups whole milk One 12oz can or bottle of beer (I prefer Guinness or Beck’s Dark) 20oz Velveeta cheese spread (regular cheese gets really oily and can separate) 6oz chicken broth ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 ½ dashes hot sauce like McIlhenny’s 1/8 cup and 1 TBSP cornstarch Combine the milk and 1 ¼ cup beer in a large pot. Cook over low heat until heated thoroughly, stirring constantly. Add cheese spread, chicken broth, hot and Worcestershire sauces. Simmer over low heat. Combine the cornstarch with the remaining beer and mix well. Add cornstarch mixture to the pot, stirring constantly and simmer until thickened. Do not boil. Makes about 2 quarts of soup. Double boils should be used to avoid burning the soup.

iLOVE IT by Cassie Johnson
Give the Gift of Life!
E
very two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. January is National Blood Donor Month, and we’re encouraging you to roll up your sleeve for a lifesaving cause!
The American Red Cross hosts about 500 blood drives across the country every day. One donation can save up to three lives.
Why Donate?
You would probably be surprised at how many friends or family members have needed a blood transfusion…I certainly was! Patients
of all ages receive blood donations, from young to elderly and every age in between. What if your child, parent, or friend needed a blood donation in order to save their life, but the blood bank was empty or didn’t have their blood type? This is exactly why donations are so important. “Blood is perishable,” explained Tiffany Taylor, External Communications Manager for the Red Cross Tennessee Blood Services Region. “It is needed every day for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer, or sickle cell disease, and many more reasons. If blood products aren’t readily available and there is a serious shortage, a physician may have to forego performing a critical procedure.” Kaden Mitchuson suffers from a rare blood disorder called Hemoglobin Nottingham. He has received around 75 donations in his young six years. “If Kaden did not have donor blood, he would not be here with us,” shared his Mom, Wendy. “He relies on blood transfusions because there are no other options with his condition. We are so thankful for blood donors, it truly is the gift of life.” Young mom Laura Standifer was 27 years old when she received a blood donation. “A couple of hours after my son was born, I had an amniotic fluid embolism,” she explained. “I began to hemorrhage. While waiting several hours for the helicopter, I was given three units of blood to keep me alive while we waited. The blood donations I was given saved my life. It allowed me to recover and go home to my newborn and toddler. If not for complete stranger’s blood donations, I wouldn’t be here.”
Eligibility
Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. In our region, individuals who are 16 years old and have parental consent are eligible. If you’re a first time donor here are a few tips:
38
•
Be well rested before you give blood.
•
Bring a current photo ID to your appointment.

•
Eat iron rich foods such as meat, beans, spinach, or raisins.
•
Make sure you’re extra hydrated with at least an additional 16 oz of water.
Giving Blood Isn't Complicated - or Scary!
A trained staff member will ask questions about your health history during a private and confidential interview. Your vital signs and iron level will be checked during this mini physical. Minutes later, you’re ready to donate. When your donation is complete, it’s snack time. You’ll be offered a snack and beverage, and the chance to relax for about 10-15 minutes. This allows your body to adjust to the slight decrease in fluid volume. When you are ready to leave, you will receive your Red Cross donor card. Donors can give blood every 56 days.
How Your Donated Blood Is Used
Once blood is drawn and completes the testing and type processes, it’s ready to save a life. Whole Blood Donations are the most flexible donations and frequently given to trauma patients or someone during surgery. Power Red Donations are a concentrated dose of red cells. These are commonly given to trauma victims, newborns, emergency transfusions during birth, and anyone suffering from a massive blood loss. Platelet Donations are needed to help blood clot. Cancer patients and others fighting life-threatening illness or injury often receive platelets. The last type of donation is Plasma. This is very important, because AB plasma can be given to anyone, regardless of their blood type. In emergency situations, this is lifesaving as it is used to stop bleeding.

To make the process easier, register online for a RapidPass. This will save time if you donate regularly as you can complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of your donation prior to arriving at the blood drive. Freezin' for a Reason Western Kentucky Polar Plunge
B
aby, it’s cold outside, but that’s not stopping people from plunging in for the 11th annual West Kentucky Polar Plunge. This chillin’ event raises money for state and local Special Olympics programs. Folks are freezin' for a reason - this very worthwhile cause. This truly is one of the coolest events of 2020 - yes, the puns just keep on coming! On Saturday, March 7 the Biggest Chill in western Kentucky hits the water once again at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park. Close to 1,000 plungers are expected to head to the park and take a chilly dip in Kentucky Lake. This year marks the 11th Anniversary for the Western Kentucky Polar Plunge and Polar 5K. Over the past years, western Kentucky has raised nearly $900,000 for Special Olympics Kentucky. Since 2009, the number of athletes has tripled and continues to grow. All funds raised go to support Special Olympics Athletes in Kentucky and all donations are tax-deductible.
The BEAR Minimum
The West Kentucky Polar Plunge is a great way for everyone - individuals, organizations and businesses - to get involved in supporting Special Olympics Athletes. The Plunge works just like a walk-a-thon with Polar Bears raising a bear minimum of $75 ($50 for Junior Polar Bears) to earn the right to plunge.

The annual running of the Polar 5k will take place at 10:45am at the Convention Center. Runners and walkers will go through the park on one of the most beautiful race courses in Kentucky. They will cross the dam and finish at the plunge site – the Courtesy docks behind the lodge near the beach area.
Polar Plunge Triple Crown Challenge
The Triple Crown isn’t just for horses - that’s right, participants have the chance to get into the water not once, but twice, in addition to running the 5k! These overachievers will begin their day off by running the 5k. Then, they will enter the water twice - once from the dock, and another time by running in through the beach!
Every Polar Bear receives an official Polar Plunge t-shirt and Polar Bear Club Certificate, but participants who raise more money can earn even better rewards. The top three fundraisers will be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 travel certificate from AAA Travel. “Even if you aren't participating we would love to see you come out to the event,” said Laura Miller, Western Kentucky Regional Director for SOKY. “You can plunge, run, spectate, donate or simply volunteer. Please come and meet our athletes, and see what Special Olympics is all about.”
Costume Contest & Polar 5k
Check in for the day’s events starts at 8am. At 10am the opening ceremony will begin and will include the announcement and presentation of fundraising awards. If you really want to get into the spirit of the event join the annual costume contest which will be judged after the awards. It’s always a highlight of one of the craziest events of the winter.

Those who complete the challenge will get a separate medal and will be crowned a Triple Crown Champion. They will get a special photo op on the golden throne with a golden scepter. This fun challenge was a lot of fun and very successful last year.
Too Chicken to Plunge?
There will be people who cannot jump into ice cold water for a variety of reasons. No worries! The plunge has options for people who can’t brave the temperatures. Persons can register as a Virtual Plunger.
Silent Auction
“In addition to our 5K and Plunge, we are now holding a Silent Auction,” Miller told me. “We will have tons of items to bid on ranging from gift baskets range in value from $150 - $500 dollars, and larger items. We are still accepting auction items and encourage local business and individuals to donate. In the past these have included Hopper passes to Disney World, gift cards to boutiques & restaurants, gym passes, home décor, pet supplies, bags & purses and even a sled! All the donated items help to make this event a fun day and add to the excitement.”
Sponsors Make It Happen!
The presenting sponsor for 2020 is once again Peel & Holland. Any individual or business can become a sponsor. There are three levels to choose from: Gold - $2500 and up; Silver $1000 - $2499, and Bronze $500 - $999.
42
Gold Level sponsors who have already committed include Kentucky Dam Village KDV, 96.9/West Kentucky Star, WPSD, Murray Electric System. So far, Silver sponsors are America’s Mattress, Hutson Inc, Lake Chem FCU, McDonalds, Murray Transit, Taylor Bus Sales, Imes Funeral Home, Womack-Carter, Culver’s. Bronze level sponsors include Primary Care-Murray and Progress Rail. Miller encourages businesses and individuals to both participate in the Polar Plunge challenge and financially support Special Olympics. “It is more than one day of sports,” she explained. “Special Olympics is a movement that changes the lives of everyone who is fortunate enough to be touched by it.” For more on how you can get involved in the Western Kentucky Polar Plunge or for sponsorship information, contact Laura Miller at 270.293.9054 or lmiller@soky.org.
