Wish It. Dream It. Do It. Celebrating Their 10th Anniversary
O
our cover this month features Tressa Wilham, AMPA’s director and owner, together with her daughter, Sawyer. AMPA is a premier studio for dance training and offers classes for youth ages 1 ½ years old to 18.
AMPA was founded in August 2009 so this summer is the tenth anniversary of the studio’s formation. From its early days inside Paducah Regional Sports Plex, AMPA has blossomed into a 5,500 square feet, custom designed studio, located in Jordan’s Crossing behind Kentucky Oaks Mall. The school offers three dance rooms - all with full length mirrors, Bose sound systems and Marley dance floor surfaces. It is the only studio in the area to offer state of the art ‘floating dance floors’ (the best floors for dancers as they absorb impact and protect the dancer’s joints). The facility also offers a breakroom for study, free Wi-Fi and video monitoring so that you can watch your dancer while they learn. Tressa’s goal has always been to instill her students with values that they can use throughout their life. Confidence, poise & perseverance, are just a few of the character traits that come with being an AMPA dancer. Of course they’ll also learn time management, commitment, and team work. AMPA provides professional dance training, top-of-the-line dance facilities, and exposure to nationally known dance choreographers. At AMPA you can learn tap, jazz, classical ballet, contemporary ballet, hip hop, and lyrical. The studio is the place to train if your goal is to learn proper technique in a fun, family atmosphere. Tressa has taken dance since she was a little girl and began assisting with instruction at age 12. “I’ve always loved dance and enjoyed working with kids,” Tressa says. “I thought I might be a dance teacher, but I never dreamed I would someday be a studio owner. Starting AMPA has been an amazing experience and a lot of hard work. But, I don’t have any regrets.” AMPA came about almost by accident. Tressa had returned to teaching dance in western Kentucky after obtaining her college degree, but she was considering a different career path. She had applied, and been hired, for a Human Resources position in Dallas, Texas. She thought she would try a totally different career path and announced her departure. Tressa was surprised at how many students and their families were really upset that she was moving. “I woke up one morning in late June, right before I was scheduled to leave,” Tressa explained. “I thought about all the students and their families that had been asking me to stay. Their support was overwhelming and humbling. I never went to Dallas!”

“I had been working part time at “The Plex” and I knew they had some space available to lease – it just all came together very quickly. I could never has done this without the help and support of a core group of parents. I was able to open AMPA at the age of 23 and we all grew together. That was a precious time and many great friendships were formed that survive to this day. We began with just 60 students. Two years later we were able to move into our current 5,500 square feet studio and our student numbers have grown to over 200.”

Teaching along-side Tressa are Cate Kroehnke, Trish Steckenrider, Emily Suhrheinrich -Weeks, Lauren Walker and Becky Brookshire. Douglas P. Arnold is AMPA’s music instructor and Office Manager. All of the instructors have a college degree: They have studied and performed at a college level and beyond. In the spring, these classes will travel with the competitive company dancers to regional competitions and one regional convention where they will compete at the recreational level. The Peewee, Junior Rec and Teen Rec company classes allow dancers to get more involved without having the full commitment of the competitive company. These classes are a great introduction for dancers interested in competitive dance. They can also be a good ‘balance’ for dancers who want more, but not all.

iLOVE IT
by Will Brandon
Riding in the
P
aducah is home to many bike lovers and many beautiful bike trails. It’s also the home of some ferociously hot and steamy summer weather and so, in 2014 the Moonlight Bike Ride was born. On top of being a welcomed break from the sweltering weather and being a fun family night out, it’s a fundraising event for Paducah Cooperative Ministry (PCM). iLove It when I can enjoy a late-night ride while supporting a great local cause. The Moonlight Bike Ride was founded by Erin and Justin Lewis, members of Chain Reaction Cycling Club who had participated in several glow bike rides in larger cities. They, along with former PCM Board Member Stephanie Moss, pitched the idea to Martha Emmons and Hutch Smith of BikeWorld and a good idea became a great event. This year’s 6th Annual Moonlight Bike Ride will be held on July 27. The first ride had about 300 cyclists participate and this year, the coordinators hope to have 600 plus bike lovers in attendance! In 2018
the Moonlight Bike Ride set a record for both riders participating and raising more than $20,000 for PCM. “We have been glowing with gratitude for our community,” said PCM Executive Director Heidi Suhrheinrich. The ride has raised more than $ 90,000 for PCM in the five year span of events so far.” Since its founding, Paducah’s cyclists have enjoyed this easy 10-mile ride under a full, beautiful, summer moon. The course begins at Bike World, located at 809 Joe Clifton Drive in Paducah, and riders will wind through the streets of downtown Paducah. It returns to BikeWorld for the finish. “The Moonlight Bike Ride is just so much fun,” said Justin Lewis, one of the ride organizers. “The music, community involvement, and active participants all come together to form a brilliant evening.”
Live Music While Your Ride
Local musicians Daniel Neihoff and Haleigh Martin will be playing some great tunes at BikeWorld both before and after the event beginning at 8pm. You are encouraged to bring chairs to enjoy the music. First Baptist Church will be providing free watermelon, Paducah Bank’s ice cream truck will be on site with free goodies, PCM will have glow necklaces and accessories, and McCracken Co. Library will be on site making souvenir buttons with their button machine.
Lights & Helmets, Please
Riders are expected to follow all standard safety procedures. This will include wearing helmets, abiding by all traffic laws, and having lights on their bikes - front white headlights and red rear lights. Make sure your bike is up to date on its maintenance. In addition, BikeWorld has lights that go around your bike’s frame and through wheel spokes. They are for use long term and are not just one time use products. These make a big difference to a cyclist’s visibility at night and will light up your bikes for added safety – while also looking super cool! Riders under 14 must have an adult accompanying them for the event.

practical outreaches in the community. These include Fresh Start Village, free groceries to needy families, an emergency relief fund and Breaking Barriers, a program for women incarcerated at McCracken County Jail. In 2016, PCM provided emergency groceries from its food pantry on 5,357 occasions to an average of 452 households each month. They gave $140,000 in assistance to 1,295 households needing help with urgent needs such as utilities (to avoid disconnections) and rent (to avoid evictions). PCM provided emergency shelter and support to 180 homeless women and children through the Fresh Start Village. For more information, go to paducahcoopministry.org.

iCOOK
by Britt Allgood
Let's Get Outside
T
his year, I’m craving some western Kentucky summer weather - well maybe not the 95+ degrees with 90+% humidity! I’ve been working on the upper east coast the last few months and have learned to appreciate warm summer breezes and sunny afternoons sitting on my deck. I’m looking forward to cooking on the grill and sharing mojitos made with the mint from my garden.
Summer Creativity
For many people, grilling revolves around steaks, chicken, hot dogs or hamburgers with maybe an occasional brat thrown in for good measure. Don’t get lazy with your summer grilling choices. I love grilling vegetables but sometimes you just need to get a bit creative. Char a little Radicchio and mix it with some grilled eggplant, a bit of cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette for a wonderful summer time salad. You may also want to throw some zucchini, corn or bell peppers on the grill. Just remember to oil them and season with a bit of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. How about grilling an avocado? Yes, I said avocado and it makes a wonderful base for a quinoa salad. Stone fruits like peaches are great for grilling as well - especially if they aren’t quite ripe. Just split them in half, dig out the pit, oil lightly with clarified butter or a spray, and throw them on the grill. Once they soften and have some nice grill marks, sprinkle with a little brown sugar, add a dollop of vanilla bean ice cream and garnish with a bit of cinnamon. I guarantee this will be a hit with anyone that likes peaches.
Throw a Party
Before the dog days of summer arrive, invite over a bunch of friends, make some Lamb burgers, potato salad and fire up that grill! Better yet, share the food prep work and make it a pot luck. Have everyone bring a dish. You may wind up with all appetizers, but even that can be a meal if you have the right mix. Be sure to ice down some adult and family friendly beverages and have an ice-cold watermelon to cut up. If you really need to cool off, a bucket full of water balloons can liven up the evening and provide a much-needed break from the heat. I hope these tips make your summertime grilling more flavorful and fun. Live, Laugh, Love and Eat Well

Grilled Avocado Halves with Cumin-Spiced Quinoa & Black Bean Salad
Serves 4-6 For the grilled avocados: 3 avocados halved, and pit removed 1 to 2 TBSP olive oil 2 lemons juiced Salt and Pepper to taste
For the salad: 1 cup dry quinoa (yields about 3 cups cooked if you have cooked it ahead of time) 3 TBSP Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar 2 tsp maple syrup 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp salt Black pepper to taste 1 cup cucumber diced 1 cup red bell pepper diced (or can substitute cherry tomatoes) ½ cup raw corn kernels (from one ear or thawed frozen corn) 1 ½ cup cooked black beans (or 1 can beans, rinsed) 10 to 15 basil leaves cut in a chiffonade ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro plus extra for garnish Lightly oil your grill or grill pan and set on medium heat. Rinse the quinoa in a fine sieve and place it in a medium pot. Add 2 cups of water and pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for about 15 minutes covered or until liquid absorbs. Fluff the quinoa with a fork and allow it to rest, covered for 10 minutes. While the quinoa cooks, cut the avocados in half and remove the pits. Brush them lightly with olive oil and drizzle with lemon juice. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and place them cut side down on the grill. Cook for about 5 minutes or until they have nice grill marks. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, maple syrup, mustard, cumin, salt and pepper to taste. In a large mixing bowl, add the cooked quinoa, cucumber, bell pepper (or tomatoes), corn, black beans, basil and cilantro. Dress the salad and toss gently. Season to taste. held on Saturday, July 20 at 2pm. For the first time it will be hosted by AMPA (Academy of Movement and Performing Arts), located at 451 Jordan Drive in Paducah (near Kentucky Oaks Mall).
Win a Spot in the Kentucky State Fair
Doug P. Arnold, owner of Douglas P Music Studio and office manager for AMPA, has been the talent contest manager of the show for the past 17 years. Since taking over as organizer, the number of entries has grown to over 50 participants. Contestants should note that this show is the only open preliminary contest in McCracken County for the Kentucky State Fair Talent Classic in August.
Do What YOU Do Best
The talent contest will consist of five different age groups: 4-7, 8-12, 13-17, 18-21, and 22 and over. Contestants are not confined to any particular skill set – so do what you feel is your talent! “While singing and playing guitar are the most common, all talents are welcome,” Arnold told me. Singing, dancing, gymnastics, musical bands, jugglers, comedians, and more – everyone with a skill is encouraged to participate.
Prizes Fit for a Winner
While trophies and cash prizes will be awarded in each different age division, the top three acts from the 13 - 21 age categories will advance to compete at the upcoming 41st Annual Kentucky State Fair Talent Classic.

“I think this talent competition is a great asset to the community, especially with the additional opportunity to advance to the Kentucky State Fair,” Arnold said. “We have several kids who use the Talent Classic as a springboard for their career in the arts. From the 2018 contest, saxophone player Kevin Kortz received First Runner Up in the finals, and vocalist Kathryn Johnston was the Grand Prize Winner.”
Be a Talent Sponsor
The talent contest is still looking for organizations and businesses to help sponsor the community event with monetary donations or gift certificates. If you are interested in sponsoring the contest or know someone who would be interested in competing, please contact Doug Arnold at talentcontest@comcast.net or call him directly at 270.331.1372. Everyone has a talent that is worth showcasing to the world. There is no better time than now to take that chance. Whether you can sing, dance, juggle, or play the accordion, we hope to see you at the McCracken County Talent Contest!

It's Time to Be Kind
T
he Guess Anti-Bullying Foundation is hosting their 5th Annual Kindness Color Walk on Saturday, August 3. In a world that doesn’t always feel very kind, this event is a breath of fresh air!
Registration opens at 8am and the walk, which takes place on Paducah’s Greenway Trail will start at 9am. The goal is to bring not only the community together, but also students, parents, teachers, coaches, ministers, friends, neighbors, and business leaders from communities around the region. Organizers hope that by emphasizing the power of kindness at the beginning of the school year, they can build a foundation for a kinder student experience. Like bullying, kindness also happens one act at a time. “Our goal remains to create kinder schools and communities and the success of the Kindness Walk is proof that others want that as well,” said Morgan Guess, Co-founder of the Guess Anti-Bullying Foundation. As a result of Morgan’s personal experience with bullying, Morgan Guess and her mother, Susan Guess, founded the Guess Anti-Bullying Foundation in 2012. Since the foundation began, the duo has sponsored authors, filmmakers, and speakers at local schools. They successfully lobbied

the legislature for a bill to formally define bullying in Kentucky. Governor Matt Bevin signed the bill into law in April of 2016 and the definition impacts all 1,233 public schools and 640,000 Kentucky students. They also added a #bekindpaducah mural on the back of the MAKE building at the corner of 7th and Broadway and worked with Four Rivers Behavioral Health to open a mental health drop in center for young people ages 16-25. “For any child that is being bullied, I encourage them to tell someone,” said Morgan. “Like me, they probably worry the bullying will get worse if they tell, but I am proof that it can get better and it starts with asking for help.” Each year, the Guess family chooses an honorary grand marshal to recognize during the walk. This year, Dr. Lisa Lasher has been chosen. Dr. Lasher passed away unexpectedly in 2018, leaving behind her husband and daughter. “Her legacy and kindness deserve recognition,” Susan Guess told me. “Dr. Lasher not only delivered babies, but she cared for everyone with kindness and compassion. One person had such a positive impact on so many lives, and her kindness is remembered by everyone who knew her.”
The walk will start as it has for the past five years with the Paducah Tilghman drum line and cheerleaders. Electric 96.9 will be playing music, the Paducah Bank WOW! Wagon will furnish free ice cream, the KIND Company will donate protein bars, and Banks Market will provide water. Texas Roadhouse will set up refreshment stations serving tea, lemonade, and water along the trail. A foam bubble machine will greet participants as they cross the finish line, and the Paducah Fire Department will offer the opportunity to spray off the color acquired during the walk. Registration is $10 and includes a t-shirt for all pre-registered participants. Extra shirts will be available for walk-up registrations on August 3 while supplies last. The registration form can be found at guessantibullying.com. Updates to the walk will be posted on the Guess Anti-Bullying Foundation Facebook page. Sponsorships are still needed to cover the registration for athletes representing their schools at the walk. For questions on sponsorship and other ways you can help, contact Susan Guess at 270.210.2423 or email to susanshafferguess@gmail.com. While adults tell their children be kind, leading by example will always speak louder than words. Positive actions from kindness can have even more of an impact than the negativity of bullying. Sometimes, we can appear to be kind but unintentionally do hurtful things. Misunderstandings happen daily and feelings get hurt. Don’t wait for someone else to take a stand – YOU can make it happen! Use your own voice for good.

Keeping Dads Healthy This Father's Day
E
ach June we celebrate Dads, Step-Dads, Granddads, Uncles, and all the men who provide love and leadership for our families. Father’s Day is on June 16, and the week of June 10-14 is National Men’s Health Week. With busy lives and hectic schedules, putting time aside to focus on exercise and health can be challenging. This June, give dad the gift of healthy experiences and habits rather than a tie or a #1 Dad coffee mug. Did you know the three most common preventable causes of death of men are smoking, high blood pressure, and being overweight? In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in America. It takes the lives of over 321,000 men a year, averaging one in every four male deaths. That being said, let’s get moving with Dad!
Get Moving!
The most simple and overlooked exercise is…..WALKING! Just 30 minutes of walking three to five times a week helps build stamina, burn
calories, and improve heart health. Believe it or not, walking daily, or several times a week, has more benefits than sporadic weight lifting or occasional cross-fit. Get the kids in the stroller, on their scooters, or even their Rollerblades, and set a brisk pace to get your heart rate higher. Even a moderate pace can prevent weight gain and help you maintain a healthy weight. How long has it been since you took the bicycles out of the garage? Cycling can help protect you from stroke, heart attack, depression, diabetes, and even arthritis. Not only is it a good muscle workout, but also a great aerobic exercise. Since it is low impact, it causes less strain and injuries than other forms of exercise. Once you learn how to ride a bike you never forget, which makes it fun no matter what your age. My in-laws are in their mid-60s and they love to ride bikes with our family. Don’t forget the helmets and have some fun! Walking and riding around your neighborhood or a low traffic area is great for weeknight strolls. Make a fun family day by checking out one of the many great trails our area has to offer. The Greenway Trail in Paducah, Fort Massac in Metropolis, Mike Miller Park in Draffenville, and Land Between The Lakes are just a few options – walkers and riders are welcome, of course. For the Dad who wants serious time for exercise or to blow off the stress from life, how about a gym membership or a pass for a local fitness club? Local clubs are often less crowded than big chains, and they provide personal attention. You’re also helping your community by giving your support to a local business.
Think Inside the Lanes
Here’s a fun and surprising way to exercise – bowling! While this may not be at the top of cardio exercises, the Professional Bowlers Association says bowling uses 134 muscles during a game. The repetitive swinging, flexing, bending, and stretching gets muscles from your arms, legs, chest and back in motion. Who doesn’t love lacing up a pair of bowling shoes and having some fun? For budget friendly bowling, visit kidsbowlfree. com. During the Summer months, registered kids receive two FREE games of bowling each day. All you pay is shoe rental, and they offer family packages as well so parents can play. Participating bowling alleys in your area are listed on the site.

Fire Up the Grill
While fried foods are yummy, the warm Summer months call for firing up the grill. Grilled foods have less fat because the excess drips off. Grilling meat preserves more riboflavin and thiamine, both nutrients that play a key role in a healthy diet. You can grill your entire meal, because veggies are delicious when grilled. Like meats, vegetables also retain more of their vitamins and minerals when grilled. Wrapping fresh veggies in foil, or even placing them on top of the grill, is far more nutritious than frying or boiling them. Search online for recipes to try, because the possibilities are endless! Find your local farmer’s market or favorite produce stand to pick out fruits and vegetables as a family. Locally grown products are fresher by not being exposed to artificial lights and temperature changes. That means your veggies have more nutritional value when you eat them. Grilling goes hand in hand with outdoor activities. So, flip those burgers, sauce the chicken, shoot a round of hoops, or kick a soccer ball around with the kids while your meal is cooking. We hope everyone encourages the fathers and father figures in their lives to continue being strong, caring, healthy men so that they can
continue being effective parents. Whether you’re a first-time dad trying to figure it all out, or a grandpa giving advice to your children and grandchildren, thank you for being there! With all the physical activities planned, perhaps on Father’s Day itself, Dad will also like to enjoy a nice, relaxing nap.

Benefiting from Bilingualism Should My Child Learn a Second Language?
I
n a world that is very quickly becoming fully connected via technology and media, learning a second language may not seem necessary or worth the effort. It seems that wherever we travel these days most people speak some English. So, is learning another language necessary? Are there other reasons that we should learn languages? Do bilingual children have an advantage when compared to monolingual children? How early should a child learn another language - is bilingual education necessary for children before high school or college? Is it something that can be achieved if the parents themselves are not bilingual?
The Answer to All of Those Questions is a Resounding YES. Countless studies exist that champion the advantages of bilingual education; from higher levels of empathy to higher scores in academic achievement. It's why many children are offered language studies in school and even required to take language classes in college. Learning a second language seems to have many benefits - scientists are still in the process of discovering just how many.

Many Words for One Idea
One major component of learning another language is understanding the world can be described and experienced in more than one way, or in more than one language. Children who are bilingual realize their language is not so “permanent” – one can use many different words to recall one particular idea or object. This takes quite a bit of skill to know exactly when a certain word should be used instead of another.
Perspective & Perception
For example, a child learning two languages must understand when to use the word “verde” instead of “green.” It requires the child to have enough perception of who (s)he is talking to in order to know what language to use. The ability to understand how to connect through the correct language leads to a greater sense of empathy. Bilingual children are able to understand another person’s perspective much earlier than monolingual children. Often, it isn’t an argument of the benefits of learning a second language, but a worry of how to give a child a second language when the parents do not speak one themselves. Children can learn a second language at a very young age. The idea of adding a second
language to a child as young as two years old isn’t as complicated as you might think.
Language Immersion
One very natural way to acquire another language is through the educational practice of language immersion. An immersion program, or dual language program, is a program in which a substantial portion of their school subjects are taught through the medium of a second or foreign language. New concepts and ideas are taught first in a language that is not native to the student, and then can later be reinforced and reviewed with English. This also applies to interactions between the student and the teacher. For example, when speaking to a child, the teacher will address the child in the target language. “As-tu faim?” (“Are you hungry?”) will be asked while the teacher gestures toward the stomach and mimics chewing with the mouth. Students understand, based on the context, the question being asked is if (s)he is hungry. The response from the student (usually in English) will be translated by the teacher - “yes” is repeated as “oui.”
The rationale behind immersion is that students can learn a language effectively if it is used for significant periods of time and for substantive communication in school, much as children learn their native language in the home. Quite often, parents are doubtful their child can pick up a second language at such an early age. But parents should consider how a first language is acquired; it is not taught with grammar and spelling and syntax rules, but just through experiencing the language. Parents speak to their child from the moment they are born, and it is through experience children learn how to use the correct words and sentence structure to talk about the world around them and their place in that world. Immersion programs aim to replicate the very same process, but in another language. StarBright is a local nonprofit immersion language center in downtown Paducah that specializes in language education for all ages. If you are interested in your child learning another language visit pathosinc.org/StarBright.
