This issue is all about our Dad’s as we head towards Father’s Day this June. There are articles on men’s health, the importance of fathers, and events that supports our veterans, and help us bond with our girls. Father’s Day this year is a perfect time to remember my Dad’s – yes, I am doubly blessed to have had two men I called Dad. One was my birth father Von, who recently passed away, and the other my adopted father, Norman, who raised me. Two men who took care of their families and left me with lasting memories. Dads are important in so many ways and I’m blessed to have known both of them. Happy Father’s Day to all the dad's, papa’s, paw-paw's, pop's, daddy’s, pappy’s and pa’s out there.

On our cover this month are members of The Rhythm Factory, giving us a taste of those times as they play it cool and get back to nature. Big Changes Are Ahead for The Rhythm Factory

"It’s hard to believe that nearly seven years ago, TRF began with less than 50 students in a small studio that seemed like a shoe box at times. “People believed in us from the get-go,” said Okerson. “So, somehow we just made it work!” Four locations and over 350 students later, the school continues to grow with new faces every single year. “I believe this means we are doing something right,” exclaims Okerson. “We are blessed by the loyalty of our students and families. In fact, there is already a waiting list for next season!”

Tiffany Okerson, founder and owner of The Rhythm Factory (TRF), is thrilled to announce they are moving to a new location this July. TRF will be at 701 Jefferson Street, right where Downtown and Lower Town meet. The facility is larger and better equipped than the current one. A spacious lobby for parents to wait, more classrooms, and a study area are just a few of the new perks.

Newer, Bigger Location!

“We will be in the center of Paducah’s artistic hub… exactly where I feel we have always belonged!” said Okerson. “We encourage our students to be their personal best in life, whether at home, school, TRF or elsewhere. Having a designated study area on-site will help students who are regularly at TRF to prioritize their academics – allowing them to enjoy valuable family time when they get home.” TRF’s commitment to finding a balance between education, family and faith has always been an integral part of their business model. This is why the studio’s performance team, Rhythmic Youth, competes just once a year. It allows the students to spend the rest of the season

“At TRF, we believe this is the perfect balance for families,” explained Okerson. “Families who want to see their kids develop talent, gain performance experience, but don’t want this to be all-consuming.

New Classes in Metropolis!

In addition to the new Paducah facilities, TRF will expand classes to include a new location at Central Hall in Metropolis, Illinois. Classes will begin in August and will be offered based on demand. This will be a more convenient option for families living in Southern Illinois.

Youth-Based Variety Shows

TRF has always looked for ways to break the mold and set themselves apart from other arts schools in our area. They are excited to share the launch of youth-based variety shows. “TRF will be creating

performances where every child will be given the opportunity to showcase their talents equally… no one student will have a leading role, “ explained Okerson. “Music and numbers will be versatile, and every star will have a say in what they sing, dance, play or act in. This will add a personal touch which I believe is often missing from other productions out there. The cherry on top is that TRF will also join forces with other local art-based businesses to accomplish these oneof-a-kind shows and bring our community’s talented youth together.”

Fitness, Dance & Pilates!

Another addition to the many classes offered next fall will be fitness, dance, and Pilates classes for adults taught by Marci Paris of Barre Evolution.

Credentialed Instructors

Mama Tiff, as her students call her, grew up in and around the art world. She is approaching her 13th year of teaching and has been performing professionally since the age of 17. Each year, TRF instructors are carefully chosen to ensure students are properly trained in a Diversified Arts curriculum. “We already have a solid team of experienced teachers lined up for next season!” said Okerson. TRF Instructors are required to have ample experience in performance, training and working with children. They must either hold a degree/certification, or be in the process of actively pursuing one in their area of instruction. For staff bios, please visit trfpaducah.com.

Building Characters

The staff at TRF works hard to instill modesty, humility, discipline and character in their students. There is a no-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior. “Kids today have negative influences thrown at them constantly,” said Okerson. “Our calling at TRF is to be a breath of fresh air; a place that is wholesome and safe.” This approach has positively affected many of the school’s students and they view TRF as their second home. They consider fellow classmates like family. This is the atmosphere Mama Tiff has sought to create all along. “When I see my students exhibiting grace, kindness, and inner beauty that is far more rewarding to me than any trophy,” stated Okerson. The Rhythm Factory is more than just performing arts. It’s an experience that students will carry with them through their childhood and beyond.

My granddaughter Lexi began dance classes when she was three, but didn’t find her self-esteem until we moved to TRF four years ago. It was here that she began to feel that she was “special”. The professional instructors and their personal interest in her have created an appetite for the Arts that have helped her become a “Recruiter” for Choir and Interpretive Dance at MCHS!

I can say proudly that I am a TRF “original” and this has been my home and family since 2011. Since I will be staying local for college next year, I am thrilled to continue at TRF as a staff member, even helping teach at the new Metropolis location. Without ‘Miss Tiff’ and her amazing staff, I would still be that full-of-stage-fright little girl I once was. I cannot wait to see what the future holds because of the performer The Rhythm Factory has helped create in me and made me believe that I am.

Choosing Passwords That Really Protect You

he recent hacking of celebrity photos has drawn increased attention to the importance of online passwords, and how many people don't approach them seriously. Hackers like to filch from celebrities because it gives them bragging rights among fellow hackers. This isn't an issue with ordinary people. But everyone should be concerned with protecting sensitive information online.

Security Versus Convenience

The main issue with passwords is balancing security with convenience. The most convenient option is to use the same password with all of your sites and to make that password easy to remember by choosing a simple word, as simple as "password," which believe it or not some people still do. This of course is also the least secure option. There's actually a list that circulates among hackers of the 500 most commonly used passwords, which along with password includes 123456" abc123, letmein, and iloveyou. More websites these days require you to create passwords that are at least eight characters long and include at least one capital letter and one number. This is good practice with any site. Here's other frequently offered and frequently ignored passwords advice:

Not Just Letters

Use symbols as well as upper and lowercase letters, and numbers. The more types of characters you find on your keyboard that you include in a password, the more difficult it will be to crack. Don't use as passwords your birth date, the name of a relative, or a dictionary word. Some password-cracking programs simply run through all of the words in a particular dictionary.

Longer Is Better

Use longer rather than shorter passwords. 8 characters should be the minimum, but 12 is even better. Some "brute force" passwordcracking programs on heavy-duty hardware can run through every possible 8-character combination in a matter of hours.

Passphrase Is Best

Use a passphrase instead of a password. A short sentence, such as "Go forth 4 ever & more," can be easy to remember, not too difficult to type, and very difficult to crack.

Change It Up

Don't use the same password or passphrase with multiple sites for help in remembering it. Periodically high-profile sites are hacked

in which thousands of users' passwords are breached. If a hacker discovers a password of yours this way or by using a passwordcracking program, and you use the same password for other sites, this makes it easy to break into your other sites. Consider making each passphrase a variation, changed in a standard way based on the site you're connecting to. As just one of many possible examples, you could include the first three letters of the site's name within the passphrase that are pushed forward three places, so that GOO becomes JRR.

A Password & A Code

Use dual-factor authentication, sometimes called two-step verification, whenever it's available, particularly with financial or other sensitive sites. Dual-factor authentication requires you, along with a password, a second piece of information, such as answering a security question or returning a code that's texted to you.

Not Obvious Answers

Choose questions whose answers can't be easily guessed by hackers or found from information publicly available online, such as the city where you went to high school. With some of the recent celebrity cases, it's believed that this is how hackers gained access to their victims' accounts.

Password Management

Some people write their passwords on a piece of paper, even taping the paper to their computer or desk. Obviously not smart. Use a password management service, or otherwise hide your passwords. A password management service lets you use one password for it and fills in your passwords, automatically and behind the scenes, for sites you visit. Two recommended password managers are Lastpass (lastpass.com) and KeePass (keepass.info).

Encrypt Them

It's still a good idea to keep a separate record of your passwords, in a word processing or spreadsheet file, for instance, and to keep this list encrypted. Alternately, keeping such a record and accessing it when needed can be a way to access sensitive sites. Basic file encryption is built into various versions of Microsoft Windows and the Mac's operating system. You could also use a third-party encryption program or an archiving program that includes encryption as an option, such as 7-Up (7-zip.org). Back up any encrypted file on which you store passwords to multiple backup sources in case of hard disk crashes or other problems.

To Ever ything There Is A Season... Including Cooking

t's late spring even though the temperatures feel more like summer. The farmer’s market is open again and it’s time to start picking up fresh seasonal produce. Seasonal eating has been around since mankind has been on this earth. It started with foraging for the foods that were available. Jump ahead a long time. Mankind has developed means of eating pretty much whatever we want at any time of the year. Modern refrigeration and other preservation techniques have extended the shelf life of most foods. We also ship in literally tons of food from other regions with more temperate climates so that we can have fresh fruit and vegetables year-round.

Slow Food or Eating Locally

As we are becoming more aware of our impact on the earth, mankind is taking a closer look at how we grow our food. Farming can have a large carbon footprint especially if you ship food over distances. The Slow Food and Eating Locally movements have been around for many years and promote consuming foods that are grown in your area.

Part of these movements is also sustainable farming practices and eating more seasonally available foods; especially fruits and vegetables. As a cook, I appreciate the challenges this can pose especially when you have picky eaters. Let’s face it, you can only do so much with kale or cauliflower - or can you? We should change our habits and keep an open mind about how to prepare, and eat, locally grown, seasonal foods.

Everything Has a Season

Sometimes we forget that Mother Nature has a plan. Plants need a certain amount of light, water, warmth and nutrients to grow – and we just have to wait for that to happen. Luckily as summer approaches, our selection of fresh seasonal, locally grown vegetables increases almost daily.

June in Kentucky means that leafy greens are in abundance arugula, herbs, chard, collard greens, kale, and spinach. Other fruits and vegetables like potatoes, cauliflower, radishes, cherries, onions, mushrooms, (cultivated and wild) and peas are making an appearance. All these options can lead to some interesting dishes if you use a little creativity. Arugula is easy to grow. A few of my friends have it in their home gardens and for salads. It does make a great base for a roasted beet salad, but why not add it to a frittata or quiche? It gives these dishes some peppery flavor with hints of mustard and nuts, as well as adding a visual punch of bright green.

Cauliflower - It's Not Just For Vegetable Medley

Cauliflower is currently all the rage. It is also an extremely versatile vegetable. Almost daily I see new recipes for cauliflower including pizza crust, couscous, and rice. I bet you didn’t know that cauliflower can be processed into a flour that is gluten free, to make everything from tortillas to pasta. I know the pizza crusts and versions of cauliflower flour are available at various stores and online. Cauliflower can also be the base for a ground beef substitute. I haven’t made this one myself but the recipe (included later) looks relatively simple and it looks like ground beef especially if cooked in a sauce like Bolognese. Is there anything this vegetable can’t do? Cauliflower is a great vegetable on its own. The easiest way to prepare it is steaming but it can be a bit bland. Most people would smother it in a cheese or Hollandaise sauce at this point. But you

Vegetable Meat Substitute

1 8 oz 2 1 2-3 1/4 cup 1 cup

head of cauliflower broken into large florets cremini (baby bella) mushrooms carrots peeled & chopped into fourths medium yellow onion quartered cloves of garlic, peeled sun dried tomatoes raw walnuts

Using the shredding attachment on a food processor, shred the cauliflower, mushrooms, carrots, onions & garlic. If you don’t have a shredding attachment, pulse small amounts at a time using the S-blade until finely chopped but not pureed.

could spice it up. Two of my favorite ways to prepare cauliflower are Aloo Gobi, an Indian dish, and an Italian Gratinata with pancetta.

In a large nonstick skillet, cook the shredded vegetables over mediumhigh heat until the moisture has evaporated & the vegetables are cooked; about 6 minutes. While the vegetables are cooking, process the walnuts & sun-dried tomatoes in the food processor until a fine meal forms, but be careful not to go so far as to make walnut butter. Add the walnut & sun-dried tomato mixture into the skillet, & mix with the vegetables, cooking for about one minute. Use in place of ground meat with the ratio of 2 cups of vegetable meat substitute for one pound of ground meat.

Cauliflower & Pancetta Gratinata

8 oz thinly sliced pancetta or bacon 2 TBSP unsalted butter, plus more for coating baking dish 1 LB cauliflower, trimmed & cut into florets 1 cup plain dried bread crumbs 3/4 cup heavy cream 1 tsp all-purpose flour 1/4 cup capers, rinsed & drained 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese Salt & freshly ground black pepper Olive oil for drizzling Place an oven rack in the center of the oven & preheat to 400° F. Arrange the pancetta slices in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake until crisp, 10-12 minutes. Set aside to cool & crumb it.

prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with the bread crumbs & remaining ½ cup cheese. Drizzle with olive oil. Bake the gratinata for 35-40 minutes, until the cheese has melted & the top is golden brown.

Kung Pao Cauliflower

Chinese rice wine or dry sherry cornstarch soy sauce sherry vinegar

Lower oven temperature to 350° F. Butter an 8x8-inch & set aside. Bring a medium saucepan of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the cauliflower & cook for 2-3 minutes. Drain well in a colander for about 5 minutes. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the bread crumbs & cook, stirring constantly, until all the butter has been absorbed & the bread crumbs are toasted, 2-4 minutes. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream & flour. Add the cauliflower, capers, pancetta, & ½ cup of the Gruyere cheese. Season with salt & pepper. Pour the cauliflower mixture into the

not to burn, about 30 seconds. Transfer bacon, chiles, & peppercorns to a plate leaving behind the drippings in wok or skillet. Return cauliflower to wok or skillet using a slotted spoon; discard the excess marinade. Cook cauliflower, tossing occasionally, until charred in spots & crisp-tender (you want this just short of scorched, don’t worry about it being dark), about 8 to 10 minutes. Add scallion whites, serrano chile, ginger, garlic, peanuts & the hoisin mixture & cook tossing often, until sauce is fragrant & cauliflower is tender, about 2 minutes. Add bacon mixture & cook, tossing, until sauce coats cauliflower, about 1 minute & season with salt. Transfer to serving dish & top with green scallion. Serve alongside rice.

Aloo Gobi

(Garlic & Chile Potatoes with Cauliflower) Serves 4 2 tsp hoisin sauce 2 tsp sugar 1 tsp toasted sesame oil 1 medium head of cauliflower (about 1 ¾ LBS) 2 TBSP vegetable oil, divided 3oz slab or thick cut bacon chopped 6 dried Japones chiles, chiles de arbol, or other red chiles 1 tsp Sichuan peppercorns or ½ tsp cracked black peppercorns 3 scallions, dark-green & white parts separated, sliced thin 1 serrano chile, sliced One 1-inch piece ginger root, peeled & finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, sliced ¼ cup unsalted, roasted peanuts Kosher salt Steamed white rice for serving Stir wine, cornstarch, & 1 TBSP of soy sauce together in a medium bowl & set marinade aside. Stir vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, sesame oil, & remaining 2 tsp soy sauce together in a small bowl & set aside. Remove the leaves & cut cauliflower into medium florets. Trim woody end of stalk & discard, then cut remaining stalk into ½ inch thick pieces. Heat 1 TBSP vegetable oil in a wok or cast-iron skillet over medium high heat. Cook cauliflower, tossing occasionally, until browned in places & beginning to soften, about 7-9 minutes. Give reserved marinade a stir to reincorporate the cornstarch & add the cauliflower to the bowl, toss to coat. Toss occasionally while cooking the bacon. Reduce heat to medium & cook bacon in remaining 1 TBSP of oil stirring often until the bacon is browned & crisp, about 5 minutes. Add dried chiles & peppercorns & cook, tossing, just until fragrant being careful

waxy, young potatoes (I use small red potatoes) small head of cauliflower (about ½ a normal sized head) olive or sunflower oil black or brown mustard seeds cumin seeds large cloves garlic, lightly crushed & chopped fresh green chilies, finely chopped & seed if you like turmeric salt fresh cilantro, chopped

Cook potatoes in their skins in a saucepan of boiling water for about 20 minutes, or until tender. Drain & soak them in ice water for 30 minutes. Peel them & then halve or quarter depending on size, they should be similar in size to cauliflower florets. Meanwhile, divide the cauliflower into ½ inch florets & blanch in a large saucepan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes. Drain & plunge into iced water to prevent further cooking. Then drain again. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. When hot, but not smoking, add the mustard & cumin seeds (beware of popping). Remove from the heat & add the garlic & chilies. Return to low heat & cook, stirring, until the garlic has a light brown tinge. Stir in the turmeric, followed by the cauliflower & potatoes. Add the salt, increase the heat slightly, & cook, stirring until the vegetables are well blended with the spices & heated through. (I typically add about 2 TBSP of water now to keep from burning). Stir in the cilantro, remove from heat & serve immediately.

The Paducah Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is hosting their annual signature event, Pa*BREW*cah Beer Fest. This popular fundraiser will take place on Saturday, June 17 from Noon-5pm, in the floodwall parking lot of historic Downtown Paducah. You can sample beers, enjoy delicious food, and listen to great live music. Let’s all say cheers to that!

This year marks the second annual Pa*BREW*cah, and organizers have increased the number of breweries represented. It’s a fantastic day where you can sample many regional beers including brand new creations to taste before they are officially released. Twenty-five breweries will be represented; most bringing multiple types of beer to taste. I spoke with Morgan Walker, Business & Operations Manager for PSO, about the festival. “Pa*BREW*cah Beer Fest will be on the app Untappd,” explained Walker. “This will give beer lovers the ability to check in their beers as they try them, and have full access to information about the breweries and individual beers featured at the festival. Attendees will receive a commemorative beer glass and a beer punch card good for 10 four-ounce samples of beer - all for only $25. You can buy delicious food on site, from one of the many food vendors.”

Are You Ready For The

Total Eclipse of the Sun?

bservers living in Paducah and the surrounding areas will be in for a very unique scientific treat on August 21, 2017. On that day, a total solar eclipse of the Sun will occur, the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, and the day will turn to night for a brief period. But this will only be observable from certain places on earth – and this eclipse can be seen best right here in western Kentucky! That’s right – the sunlight will be blocked by the Moon and it will be almost dark for several minutes this August. For most people, observing a total solar eclipse is typically a once in a lifetime event. Purchase Area Family Magazine has partnered with West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) to share information about the event, the science behind an eclipse and more! This month we spoke to WKCTC Assistant Professor of Physics, Dr. Victor Taveras. We asked him to tell us how and why eclipses happen.

Lunar Versus Solar

In astronomy, an eclipse is when one body passes in front of another. Lunar eclipses, where the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, are semi-frequent. During these events the Moon appears dark because it is passing into Earth’s shadow. Anybody on the night-time side of the Earth, and hence with a line of sight to see the Moon, is able to view a lunar eclipse.

On the other hand, when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun we have what is called a solar eclipse. In a solar eclipse the Sun appears darkened as the Moon blocks it. In total solar eclipses, in particular, the Sun is completely blocked by the Moon. However, since the Moon is so small, its shadow only falls on a small portion of the Earth’s surface. Solar eclipses happen roughly once per year, but only those people fortunate enough to be in the path of the Moon’s shadow are able to see a total solar eclipse. That’s is why solar eclipses visible from a particular location on the Earth are very rare events. For instance, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States was 38 years ago.

Just The Right Path

Since the Moon orbits the Earth roughly once per month it may seem that we should expect to have a solar eclipse every month (and a lunar eclipse as well). However, the Moon’s path around the Earth is tilted slightly and therefore, most of the time, it doesn’t come into the right alignment necessary for an eclipse. It’s either falling either a bit too high or a bit too low. This is why eclipses are even rarer than we would expect!

Viewing Glasses

Wherever you observe the eclipse, we encourage you to do it safely. Your parents probably told you to never look directly at the

Sun with your naked eye. In fact, you've probably been told that by lots of reputable sources. Looking directly at the Sun will cause vision damage. However, according to NASA and four other science and medical organizations, it's okay to look at a total solar eclipse with the naked eye â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but only when the face of the Sun is totally obscured by the Moon. To be safe, scientists recommend using solar glasses to watch the eclipse while in transition. If you observe the solar eclipse, do so with protection such as so-called solar glasses. These glasses have special filters on them to filter out the Sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s damaging radiation and to reduce the intensity so that you can observe safely without worrying about damaging your vision. Be advised that telescopes, cameras, binoculars and other optical devices need their own solar filters. Solar-viewing glasses are not a substitute for a proper solar filter on magnification devices. Never view the disk of the Sun through a telescope, binoculars or camera without a proper solar filter. Solar-viewing glasses are not powerful enough to protect your eyes from magnified sunlight. Even if you are wearing solar-viewing glasses, viewing the disk of the Sun through a magnification device will result in serious eye damage if the device is not equipped with a proper solar filter, according to the viewing safety sheet.

What Does An Eclipse Look Like?

Viewers who are looking at the eclipse with solar-viewing glasses will be able to see when the Sun's face is completely obscured by the

Moon (because, once again, the only light that can penetrate these solar-viewing glasses is the light from the Sun's disk). Viewers will be able to observe the Moon creep slowly over the Sun's disk and eventually cover the Sun entirely. In the moments before totality, viewers looking through their solarviewing glasses will see a crescent of light from the Sun growing thinner and thinner as the Moon progresses over its face. In the last few seconds just before the disk of the Sun is entirely covered by the Moon, the crescent will break up into a series of small dots of light that look like beads on a string (typically there are about three to eight such dots). These are called Baily's beads (after Francis Baily, the British astronomer who discovered them). Once the last bead disappears, the face of the Sun has been covered by the Moon, and totality has begun.

The Astronomical Jackpot

Although, we mentioned earlier that viewing a total solar eclipse from a particular area is a once in a lifetime opportunity it turns out that those of us who live in western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southeast Missouri have won the astronomical jackpot! We will be treated to a second total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 although the alignment will be a little further north of us. But that still means you will be able to see two total solar eclipses within a seven-year period! Next month, PAFM will be putting together a compilation of all eclipse-watching events taking place in our area, including The Night at Noon event being held at the WKCTC campus, near the Challenger Learning Center.

s Father’s Day approaches, it is important to turn our thoughts towards the health of the important men in our lives. Typically, men smoke and drink more than women, make far fewer visits to the doctor, get fewer preventive screenings, and take greater risks than women. The consequence is that men often die younger and more often from such ailments as heart disease, cancer and stroke, and injuries. Some local doctors have offered some advice for the male readers to help improve these numbers and the overall health of our population.

Get Your PCP!

I spoke with Dr. Alex Wright, a Primary Care Physician with Mercy Primary Care in Paducah. According to Wright, it is crucial for men to have, and keep, a Primary Care Physician (PCP). Many people brush off the importance of this, but Wright believes having a PCP can help patients on average, live longer and better. “A PCP will help their patients understand when they should start thinking about screenings and various tests. It is so vital that men have someone to turn to. A PCP will know you - they will know your family history, your background, what you do for work and how your body will respond to various treatments. They will also be able to successfully guide you through a diet change or an exercise program best suited to your body.”

Important Screenings

According to Dr. Wright, men should be proactive when it comes to their screenings. Some tests, such as for diabetes, should begin at age 35. “A PCP will know if something is off and if you need to begin screening earlier,” he explained. “That’s another benefit. Many men avoid getting their screenings because they assume that will save money. However, catching a disease early can save so much more money in the long run.” Dr. Wright also encourages patients to check with their insurance companies, as many of them will pay for screenings and physicals.

According to Dr. Jones, your first colonoscopy should be done by age 50, or 45 if you have a history of colon cancer in your family. “I think the word colonoscopy scares men,” Dr. Jones told me. “Be aware that there are other screenings besides a colonoscopy that men can do, such as stool tests, or preventative vaccinations. This is why it is so important to have a PCP they can help you know which test is an option for your needs.”

Dr. Ross Jones of Mercy Gastroenterology, couldn’t agree more. “Having a PCP can help you live longer!” He told me. “For example, your PCP can help you to schedule a colonoscopy and this may allow you to catch polyps on your colon before they become cancerous when your condition is treatable. If you are not seeing a PCP regularly and getting your screenings on time, things may get out of hand before you know it.”

Breaking The Stigma

Why are all these physicians recommending everyone have a PCP? Because nationally, 30% of men are not going in for their screenings, and thus not getting the preventative treatments that they may desperately need. “I think it’s the stereotypical male attitude,” said Dr. Wright. “Men want to wait and try to fix things after they’re broken.” Dr. Wright believes that this is often an issue of pride and would like to see it go away. “It’s just not worth it!” Dr. Wright insisted, “I just want to see people living longer, and better.”

Warning Signs

Dr. Jones shared some cautionary abnormalities men should be aware of as they think about their upcoming screenings. These include constipation, blood in stools, irregular bowel movements, unexpected weight loss, and low blood count. “Know your numbers,” advised Dr. Jones, “if there is anything odd, consult your PCP. Your doctor will guide you through unusual symptoms.”

Invest In Yourself

I was able to chat with Dale Hancock, who survived esophageal cancer in 2016. Cancer took him by surprise, interrupting his work and rushing him into an early retirement. “I had no idea,” said Dale, “that I would come home from work one afternoon, pass out, and be admitted to the ICU with a rapidly dropping blood count.” Dale endured a serious operation where one third of his stomach as well as his esophagus were removed. were able to rebuild his esophagus. “Many of us take good health for granted,” he told me. “An annual physical exam is just as necessary as any other bill! Find a good physician you trust, and have in depth, candid conversations with them at least once a year.” “A year and a half later, after chemo and radiation, I have had a life change that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. The new me is 60 pounds lighter, and although my wife asked me to stop making jokes about beginning a Walking Dead clothing line, life is amazing.” Dale credits his recovery to his every deepening relationship with God, saying he could not have gone through this without his faith. “No, cancer is never a good thing,” he says, “but you can choose to let it take charge of your life, or let it help to refine you into more than you were before.”

Advice For Those Suffering

Dale says asking questions of your doctors is crucial if you are going through a battle with cancer. “Knowledge helps make for better decisions,” he told me. “Also, make sure your spouse/significant other also asks questions! I went from eating two-pound rib-eye steaks to not being able to handle more than six ounces of anything. My loving wife had no idea she would be signing up to hook me up to a feeding tube for almost a year.” Dale says to take comfort in the fact that those you love will be there. “Whoever is your person is, they will go through this with you.” For more information on health screenings for men visit cancer.org/latestnews/4-cancer-screening-tests-for-men.html. hen your kids ask you if they can have a lemonade stand today, do you give a tired sigh in anticipation of all the work required? Me, too. So when my kids suggested doing a lemonade stand in our yard recently, I first blamed public television for putting the idea in their heads. But I soon reluctantly agreed, and we were on our way to several whole days of fun and (donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tell my kids this part) learning. To start, I told the kids to hunt down a small table, folding table or stable cardboard box. Then we ran to the store for cups, ice and powdered lemonade mix. The kids made signs to put on their table and on sticks stuck in the ground. One of the kids held up a sign and yelled, Lemonade! to attract business. My money-obsessed 10-year-old son started the first day by charging a big fat buck for each medium-size glass of lemonade. He actually had a few takers, but the next day he decided to charge half price and ended up earning much more. Some days the kids would put up a sign that said all the proceeds from the day would be going to a specific cause, like to a cat shelter or to the Red Cross. Those were the days I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gripe about having to sit outside in the heat acting as Lemonade Stand Manager and instead beamed with pride.

Creative Entrepreneurs

As summer wore on, the kids enjoyed coming up with bigger and better ideas, like Koolaid mixed with clear soda, and that was a hit. They looked like mini businesspeople sitting around the dining room table discussing the next Big Idea. They started getting repeat business from people who drove down our street every day and made labels for the cups with their business name: Summer Kids Drink Stand. The lemonade stand was a simple venture at first glance, but when I looked a little deeper I saw it for all the lessons it taught my kids and their friends, like:

Financial

Kids learn how to seek out a deal on cups and lemonade and to make their own ice in advance at home since they should pay Mom back for start-up business costs. They also learn about making change, counting money, measuring, dividing earnings between kids, how much to charge, record-keeping, saving for something they want and altruism (through donating their money to a specific cause or charity).

Social & General Business

There’s much for kids to learn about business, like the fact that there are good and bad times and days to sell lemonade (lunch and rush hour are good; neighborhood garage sales days are great; chilly days are not). They also get to meet and greet neighbors and strangers and learn patience and perseverance.

Safety & Stranger Danger

I’m sure your kids know not to go up to a car when they don’t know who is in it, but selling lemonade helps reinforce that message and lets your child know it’s okay to tell someone “no, I’m not allowed to do that.” Your child should know to let the customer get out of their car and come to get their lemonade (it’s not a drive-through, after all!).

Basic Manners

I made sure the kids knew to not hold cups by the lip or stick their hand in the cup. For a little humor break, I showed them the clip from National Lampoon’s Vacation where the kid stirs the drink up with her bare, dirty arm and told them never to do that. When telling customers how much the lemonade was, they would say, “Fifty cents, please” and thank the customer upon receiving the money. If they got a tip, they would say an extra profuse term of gratitude.

Bonus

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) was started in 2000 by Alex Scott, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer when she wasn’t even one year old. Playhouse in the Park (PIP) invites you to help celebrate their 40th Anniversary at their fabulous 70's Gala Party on Friday, June 2nd at 7 pm at the Murray Country Club. Tickets are $50 and include food, entertainment, special guest testimonials, memorabilia, a silent auction, and karaoke! Organizers urge you to dress in 70’s attire and prepare to groove to the music all night. They will also be having karaoke, so practice your favorite songs from the 70s so you can perform them. Murray Country Club will be dishing out 70’s themed foods and drinks. You get two drink tickets with your ticket purchase, but there will be an open bar should you want more. There will also be abridged performances from scenes from their 2017 production of Godspell. A video presentation from the last 40 years will be shown along with remembrances given in person, and via video, as well as written notes.

Playhouse in the Park is one of the oldest continuously producing theaters in the country. PIP produces six main stage show a year, has a senior citizens’ and two levels of children’s troupe, and is one of seven small community theaters in the country that has a chapter of the Penguin Project* that features children with special needs. Dan Lavit, Past PIP board chair and event chair, told me that being 40 years old is a big deal. “This is a major milestone for a small community theater,” he said. “Our community has been so gracious in keeping us going by supporting the arts and keeping us thriving.” Playhouse in the Park's Executive Director Lisa Cope welcomes everyone to Murray's community theater and says if you'd like more information about auditions or ways to help, send her an email any

Playhouse in the Park

The Murray-Calloway County Community theater was founded January 1977, and in May of the same year, the theater incorporated as a nonprofit organization and elected its first Board of Directors. The Board immediately began looking for a permanent home. They inquired about the old Murray Freight Depo - an unused, dilapidated building owned by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. This began a two and a half year cooperative effort on the part of city officials, county officials, and members of the theater board to obtain the depot as a home for community theater.

The depot was moved to its location in the Murray-Calloway County Park in the fall of 1979. In June 1980, the depot opened with Wizard of Oz. After three years of â&#x20AC;&#x153;wandering around town,â&#x20AC;? the MurrayCalloway County Theater had a home - the Playhouse in the Park. Since that time, the theater has produced numerous performances in the depot and has continued expanding its educational services, sponsoring the Box of Frogs Youth Theater Group, holding classes for the community, traveling to schools in the city and county, and hosting an annual Summer Theater Camp. Established in 2004, The Penguin Project has evolved into a National program. It provides a supportive environment for children with disabilities to explore their creative talents. The impact of the program has reached beyond the stage to create a social network for children who previously had very few friends and limited social opportunities.

Healthy Living in Paducah

ocal residents, Paducah Parks Services and Paducah City officials are all eagerly anticipating the opening of the new Fountain Avenue Health Park. If you’ve driven through the neighborhood recently you’ve probably seen that construction of the project is well under way. In fact the City anticipates it will be open by the end of May or early June. Here’s a sneak peek for our readers to let you know what to expect and how you can get healthy! The Fountain Avenue Health Park is being developed on the cityowned property located at 421 North 13th Street in the historic Fountain Avenue Neighborhood. The park is bordered by Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, 13th Street, Madison Street, and 14th Street. This park originally consisted of a large open area, the City’s Community Garden, and the Paducah Rotary Playground which was constructed in June 2016 by a bevy of volunteers.

An Ambitious Vision

It has taken almost four years to bring the Health Park from the planning phase to near completion of Phase 1. This ambitious project

called for the creation of an outdoor health park with a great lawn, a 10 foot wide and 1/3 mile long walking trail, inclusive playground, an expansion of the community garden, outdoor fitness equipment, and picnic areas. In the future, there will be a spray pad and plaza area, an obstacle course, public restrooms and the end of the park facing MLK Drive would include housing. The theme of the park is healthy living. It has been designed to provide a venue for local schools, the Parks Department, and other agencies to educate the public, especially youth, about proper diet and exercise

Construction Under Way

On November 15, 2016, the Paducah Board of Commissioners approved a contract with Wilkins Construction Company for the construction of Phase I of the Health Park. Wilkins providing the lowest, responsive bid of $619,169.36. The site where this park was built originally held housing authority buildings that had been torn down. They had to remove a lot of concrete and rebar and add lots of dirt and grass to give the park an athletic field surface. This phase of the project includes grading, draining, irrigating, installing the 1/3 mile walking trail & fitness area, lighting, and expanding the Community Garden. It will also include a new safer surfacing for the Paducah Rotary Playground. A mild winter allowed construction to move further ahead than anticipated, but May rains have put a damper on the progress. Paducah Parks Director Mark Thompson is eagerly awaiting its completion. “It will become a wonderful backyard for everybody,” he told me. “It’s going to help people get active, grow food, and play all day if they want to.” The Paducah Rotary Playground will be closed to the public until Phase 1 is completed. City crews have removed the temporary mulch surface, and the contractor is installing a rubberized safety surface.

Creating a Neighborhood

The park is by a roughly 150 foot area of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and is reserved for private reinvestment. It could be a mix of residential and commercial developments. Plans for a $7 million private housing development along two sides of the park have been suspended for now. The city also retained property across 14th St. for future residential development, but the city hasn’t yet put out any requests for proposals.

Rotary Club Playground

Community Garden

While the site was already the home of the Community Garden, Thompson says that this one is bigger and better than ever. Topnotch soil was added and the garden has raised/elevated beds. When completed, the garden plots will be available for reservation. Reservations for plots must be renewed annually and extend the length of the growing season (April - October). To reserve a plot, you must fill out an application and pay the reservation fee. Call the Parks office for more information about reserving a plot in the Community Garden.

Phase 2 Plans

After Phase 1 is completed, fundraising efforts will begin for Phase 2. The City will also be applying for more grants. The plan is to expand the fitness center, add a spray pad, restrooms and a plaza for farmers’ markets, concerts and other events.

Partnerships & Grants

The Health Park is made possible by a variety of funding sources and community partnerships. These include the Healthy Paducah Chapter of the Purchase Area Connections for Health Coalition, United Way of Paducah-McCracken County, Baptist Health Paducah, Lourdes Hospital, Rotary Club of Paducah, Paducah Independent Schools, and the Purchase District Health Department. $668,000 was available to start the first phase of the park. The City has received the Investing in Kentucky’s Future grant for the park in the amount of $400,000 from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. The grant requires a cash match of $200,000 which will be satisfied through a 2014 Land & Water Conservation Fund grant in the amount of $75,000, its cash match in the amount of $75,000, and donations of $25,000 each from the two hospitals. The City also has received a Recreation Trails Grant in the amount of $68,095.

The 2017 Kentucky Collectibles Appraisal Fair will be held Saturday, June 24 from 9am to 3pm at the Paducah McCracken County Convention and Expo Center. KET’s production crews will be on hand to record appraisals from the fair, which will be broadcast during the series’ sixth season.

Kentucky Collectibles tells Kentucky's stories through the prized items brought in for evaluation at the KET Appraisal Fair. With the cameras rolling, experts talk to participants about their possessions, assessing the value and history of items that range from art and antique furniture to autographed baseballs, pottery, and more. KET launched this show in 2012 after the popularity of Antiques Roadshow (AR) soared. The PBS-produced show is watched each week by 10 million viewers nationwide. AR marks its 21st season in 2017. Kentucky Collectibles, which is produced by KET, was originally led by Dave Shuffett, who also hosted the network's Kentucky

People also like small textile-related items, such as "the sampler your great-grandmother did when she moved to McCracken County or a button from a Civil War uniform. Searching For A Story

Lowry said there is a durability to the found-treasure scenario across the TV spectrum — not just with Antiques Roadshow, but with shows including Pawn Stars and American Pickers, both on the History channel. "We are searching for stories," she told me. "All the items have such intriguing stories to them." Items that have been appraised on past seasons of the show have included an antique quilt, a baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, several guns and a watch fob dubbed the rock by its owner. In its first season, a seemingly modest vase that turned out to be worth far more than its owner ever had imagined was featured. It was determined to have originated from a premier pottery works of the American Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th century. "He was stunned," Lowry said of the owner. "He had no idea it was worth that much." Often the history is just as interesting on a lowpriced item as a valuable one, Lowry explained. Some participants find that they are sitting on a modestly-packaged gold mine. Others find that their family heirloom is worth passing on to the next generation but isn't as valuable as they had hoped.

I spoke with Lisa Hill, owner of the Center Stage studio. Lisa has seven adopted daughters and has fostered over 35 other children. Her love for children and families has spilled over into this event. She focuses on building deep relationships between families, and feels that The Daddy Daughter Dance is a great opportunity for that. Hill also believes that this event is crucial to breaking stereotypes about dads. “We don’t see them dancing!” Lisa told me. “Many fathers are not able to find a good connection with their daughters. They understand going to a baseball or basketball game, but it’s harder for them to know how to connect with girls. We usually see dancing as a thing for mothers to be involved in. Many fathers drop their daughters off to practice. That’s it. I want to bridge that gap between them.” “I think many fathers do not understand the athletic side to dancing. It’s a sport! Consider the hand-eye coordination, the choreography that resembles the moves on a basketball court - this is hard work!” Lisa feel that, like many sports, because the athletes make the dance look so delicate and elegant, that people assume it’s easy. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The Reward

There’s an old saying that nothing grows in a comfort zone. This couldn’t be truer regarding relationships. Too often, we find ourselves caught in a rut. This can be especially true with fathers and their little girls. “This event,” Lisa told me, “lets men leave the ‘manly man’ outside. We ask you to come in and make a memory with their girl.” It forces them out of the comfort zone of dropping off their kids to practice, and lets them kick up their heels and have some fun. She feels the main results of the event are fathers gaining new perspective into their daughters’ lives. Dance seems like a foreign language, and in some ways, it is. Much of Ballet terminology is based on the French language. This complicates the matter further for fathers. “If they can see it as a sport, the language becomes a pattern. They’ll understand it,” she said. She went on, “It’s so beautiful. The girls just beam when they get to dance beside their daddies!”

Lisa says the inaugural event this March was a great success. “We had 100% participations! Every girl had their dad there to dance with her!” Hill hopes to start holding Daddy Dance Days at least twice every year,

so tell all your friends to get involved. You’re encouraged to make this a yearly tradition. She does warn, however, to be ready for the next day after the dance. “They’ll be so SORE!”, Lisa told me. She warns that with the routines, you will use muscles you never knew you had. “I guarantee though,” she said, “They won’t regret it, and they won’t want to go back and undo it.” Both metaphorically and physically, this event is designed to stretch your muscles. That’s how we grow!

Celebrating the Effective Father

une is the time each year when the spotlight shifts from mothers to fathers. We know that fathers play a vital role in our lives. Research supports that children who have a positive and close interaction with their fathers have higher education achievement and lower behavior issues.* Many qualities distinguish a father, or father-figure. Although many dads parent have developed their own unique parenting techniques, there are core qualities and actions that can make any man an effective father. Some of the most important skills include: • • • • • • • •

Fostering a positive relationship with the child’s mother Spending time with the child or children Nurturing Disciplining the child or children appropriately Providing context and guidance for their life outside the home Protecting and providing Being a role model**

A father’s ability to be effective in the life of his child does not necessarily begin with the relationship with the child’s mother, but the way the father treats their mother is a primary example for how children will treat others. If fathers treat her with respect, consideration, and affection, even during moments of stress, children see and mimic this behavior. Fathers who spend quality time with their children, playing and nurturing them, know more about who their children are; their personalities, likes and dislikes etc. That’s quality parenting time also means that their children know more about them. parenting your child also fosters more caring and empathetic behavior from a father towards his children. Fathers who are more empathetic and know their children well, are better equipped to appropriately nurture them, and also punish the child if necessary. Children feel loved and valued when they regularly spend quality time with their fathers and/or mothers. Providing context and guidance for their life outside the home. Fathers who act as a guide for their children as they figure out life outside the home provide a sense of self to their children. Children experience and explore the world with someone who can safely navigate them through unfamiliar terrain. Children experience a sense of safety from the presence of their father as they learn to try new things. They safely learn about falling, failure, and curiosity in a confident and reassuring atmosphere. This June, we hope everyone will encourage the fathers in their lives to continue being strong, caring, protecting men so that they can continue to be effective parents. Whether a dad, daddy, step-dad, grandpa, or father figure, thank you for being there. To those new fathers, it’s okay to not know all the answers. To those fathers who feel they have not

always been the perfect dad, remember not to be too hard on yourself. All we can do is try our best and work on our parenting skills. Fathers the most important thing is to simply be there; guide your child through life’s choices and set a good example. Many Fathers are surprised at how much they have to offer. 3 Tips for a Happy Father's Day

n the flowery fanfare of Mother’s Day, we sometimes push our dads to the side, forgetting how big of a role they’ve played in our lives. After all, If not for our fathers we wouldn’t be the noble, illustrious men and women we are today! So, let’s remember to honor and thank our fathers the right way this Father’s Day. The following are three father-friendly and simple tips on how to say, “Thanks, Dad."

Revive Old Times, Create New Ones

Treat your dad to a nice afternoon or evening out. By now, you’re probably well aware of his favorite foods and the activities he enjoys. Take him to watch his favorite team go for the win, or to see that exciting movie he’s been talking about. Try some activities the two of

you enjoyed doing when you were younger to relive and celebrate old times. Any activity the two of you can share will show your dad that you haven’t forgotten the impact he’s had on you.

Remind Him The Difference He's Made

Even if you’re not a rock star or rocket scientist (yet), your dad is proud of the life you’ve carved for yourself. Call him up and fill him in all the things you’ve accomplished, as well as the goals you have for the future. He’ll be glad to see that his guidance led you in the right direction. Remind him of the things he taught you, and the ways you have applied those teachings in your adult life. Maybe you have your own kids, and have imparted your father’s life lessons to them. Let him know that his effect and influence will last generations. And be sure to see what kinds of plans he has for his golden years. There may some kind of project the two of you can tackle together.

Offer a Helping Hand

As usual, your dad may have everything under control. And he doesn’t need your help - at the moment. But as we age, our need for extra support here and there grows. Is his memory slipping? Does he have more trouble going up stairs or handling a car lately? Maybe simple daily tasks are becoming more difficult for him. These are signs that someone may need assistance with their day-to-day living. While giving your dad the space he needs, take steps to show him that you’re available to help - when he needs it. Ask questions about his daily routine and the frustrations he may have while doing maintenance and housework. Pay attention to his physical health and the appearance of his home. And don’t be afraid to ask him for updates on any medical concerns he may have. Be sure to speak up, respectfully of course, if you notice anything amiss in his life situation. Your dad may not be ready to hand over the reins just yet, but he’ll appreciate knowing he has a strong support system like you in his retirement years. Whatever you decide to do this year, just being there for the person you love and appreciate will have a greater impact on them than any gift or activity ever will. So, for this Father’s Day, remember to be there for the one who was there for you.
