here do you think you'd find a driven, young performer dissecting the brilliant Beatles’ songbook? A drama class searching out their next epic scene for a filmmaking project? A choreography class where students use their own creativity to shape beautiful dance pieces? Or an a Capella group harmonizing to a medley that is part Disney/ part 80’s mega-hit/part reggae? Well, The Rhythm Factory, of course! The Rhythm Factory (TRF) was founded in September 2011 by Tiffany Okerson and is located in Paducah. It is is one of the region’s fastest growing schools for aspiring performers. “God has made this dream a reality and I will always give Him the glory for our success!” expressed Okerson. TRF is a “one-stop shop” for all things performing arts. “We pride ourselves on being the first and only school in this region to offer dance, vocal, drama and instrumentation all in one place,” says Okerson. “Do you have a son dying to play guitar and a daughter that dreams of being a ballerina? Maybe you have two daughters who love to sing and a son interested in hip hop. Or an only child that wants to pursue it all! At

TRF, your children can develop their interests in one outstanding facility! For parents who are stretched thin, I believe we can be a blessing for busy families looking to simplify their life and save money!” Miss Tiff says. “Our sole purpose will always be to provide a safe, nurturing, and creative environment for young artists that instills character and confidence to help them reach their fullest, God-given potential.” Okerson declared. “My staff and I work hard to promote modesty and poise, the freedom to have fun while learning a discipline, and creating an affordable family atmosphere.” Conveniently located at 2928 Park Avenue, just across from Noble Park, TRF is equipped with a spacious dance studio, ballet Barres, wall-to-wall mirrors, and professional sprung dance floors with Marley surfaces. The school has a separate classroom for voice and instrumentation. Their lobby includes a video monitoring system for parents to watch their child in class and free Wi-Fi! The Proof is in the Testimonials The Rhythm Factory Seniors (pictured with Hansen Okerson, a future student) would like to share why they chose to train and learn at TRF. (Four of these students have been with the school since its inception.) Each of them expressed that TRF has been a place of love,

joy and growth in their journey, and will be pursuing futures and/or degrees that involve the arts. Jenna Burkhart “TRF means ‘family’ to me. I can count on every single teacher and peer to lift me up no matter what. I have become a stronger singer and learned how to correctly support my voice from the wonderful vocal coaches here!” Libby Dodd I choose TRF year after year because I continue to grow as a dancer, singer and actress. The teachers are fantastic, and the classes and performance opportunities are so unique. Jacob Weitlauf “TRF prepared me for my college auditions and career, and has helped me to get offers from several phenomenal schools. I only wish I had started my training here sooner. Young men with a passion for the arts - this is the place for you to succeed!” Jodi Hooper “Every moment has been an absolute blast. Miss Tiff has been such a positive force in my life and TRF has helped me to realize how much I am truly capable of.” Sarah Okerson “It is such a loving, caring environment to learn and grow in, and I have made some amazing friendships. My technique continues to improve each week and I am challenged in new ways. Britney Tilford “I came to TRF because of its positive reputation, and to become a stronger dancer. Then I took up singing and acting, too! Since I became a member of TRF I have grown leaps and bounds in my artistry and confidence.” Experienced & Dedicated Miss Tiffany attended Overton School’s Performing Arts program in Memphis, Tennessee. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, with an emphasis in children and adolescents, from Union University, where she studied voice for three years. She is a certified instructor through the Southern Association of Dance Masters. She has been teaching for over a decade and has been performing professionally since the age of 17. She resides in Paducah with her husband Trent, a local meteorologist, and their son Hansen. The talented staff at TRF is committed to supporting the same vision as Okerson. Every teacher boasts an extensive resume that assures his or her expertise is sound, and each has obtained, or is pursuing a college degree. For staff bios, visit TRF’s website, trfpaducah.com. A Wide Variety Okerson and her staff are dedicated to offering a diverse curriculum to their students. “The dance world is everchanging, and we want to be on the cutting edge of that,”

2016 Summer Programs • • states Okerson. “We offer a vast array of dance styles, while still instilling the proper technique a dancer needs. We strive to ensure that our vocal and instrumental students are well-versed. The music industry goes beyond classical and Broadway so we want our students to engage in all styles and eras of music. TRF uses the Deva® Method, a popular practice among recording artists, which applies the classical techniques needed for a healthy voice, but with a modern twist of finding one’s own unique style. Whatever art form your child is interested in, the goal at TRF is for them to have the opportunity to put heart and soul into it. We want to foster the natural talent of every child and see it spring into life,” said Okerson. “My vision from the beginning was that this be a place for girls and boys alike, for all races and backgrounds. A beautiful tapestry of what ‘art’ should look like.” For those wondering if TRF is the school for them? Come experience the difference for yourself…you won’t be sorry! The Okerson family would like to especially thank everyone who have supported TRF over the years and believes in its mission. We are humbled, grateful and will do all we can to continue bringing the best in performing arts education to this region.

How to Protect Yourself & Your Family

F

or most of us, mosquitoes are a necessary evil of a Southern summer. Bites are certainly inconvenient: They can itch and become very irritated or even infected, but they are rarely a serious problem. However, due to recent media attention, many are learning about another more dangerous risk of the everyday mosquito bites - the Zika virus. Prior to 2015, Zika virus outbreaks occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infections in Brazil. Currently, outbreaks are occurring in many countries and territories. Zika virus will continue to spread and it will be difficult to determine how and where the virus will spread over time. So far, all confirmed cases of Zika in the U.S. are from travelers bitten by mosquitoes while in another country, including six in Kentucky. However, there is growing concern that the virus could begin to spread after those infected are bitten my mosquitos in the area. What is Zika? Zika virus disease is a disease caused by the Zika virus. People are infected with Zika through a bit from an infected Aedes species mosquito. The symptoms of Zika are usually mild and include fever, rash, joint pain,

and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is rarely deadly, and many never know they are infected. Once a person has been infected, he or she is likely to be protected from future infections. How is Zika Spread? Mosquito bites are the primary cause of infection however, the Zika virus can be spread by a man to his sex partners. In known cases of sexual transmission, the men developed Zika virus symptoms. From these cases, we know the virus can be spread when the man has symptoms, before symptoms start and after symptoms resolve. In one case, the virus was spread a few days before symptoms developed. We know that the Zika virus is present in semen longer than in blood. Zika While Pregnant After outbreaks in many South American countries, health officials recently discovered that Zika can infect a fetus during pregnancy and lead to a serious birth defect called microcephaly, as well as other severe fetal brain defects. Microcephaly is a condition in which a baby's head is significantly smaller than expected, often due to abnormal brain development.

14

• JUNE 2016 iListWesternKentucky.com

In a recent press release from the Center for Disease Control, Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., director of the CDC stated, “We have now confirmed what mounting evidence has previously suggested: Pregnant

women and their partners should take steps to avoid Zika virus infection. Health care professionals who are talking to patients every day should be aware of symptoms and advise patients who are at risk. We are working to do everything possible to protect the American public.” It’s important to know that a pregnant woman already infected with Zika virus can pass the virus to her fetus during the pregnancy or around the time of birth. To date, there are no reports of infants getting Zika virus through breastfeeding. Because of the benefits of breastfeeding, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed even in areas where Zika virus is found. Protect Yourself Mosquitos that spread chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses are daytime biters, but they can also bite at night. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, or use insect repellant. In particular, pregnant women and their families should try and stay in air-conditioned environments, or in buildings with window and door screens. Most importantly, take all necessary steps to prevent standing water in and around your home or place of business as this is where mosquitoes like to breed. The type of mosquitoes that spread Zika typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and vases. They prefer to bite people, and live indoors and outdoors near people. At least weekly drain, refresh, or cover anything that can hold water. Even a bottle cap filled with water is enough for a mosquito to breed in! Use Insect Repellant Insect repellant works! Look for deet, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-dio as active ingredients in the repellant. For extra protection, treat clothing with permethrin. Follow the directions on the label and reapply as directed. If you are using sunscreen, apply the sunscreen before the insect repellant. Protect Your Family The best way to protect younger members of your family is with clothing that covers arms and legs and with mosquito netting over cribs, strollers, and baby carriers. Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than two months of age. Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or paramenthane-diol on children younger than three years old. Protect Your Community If you have travelled to an area with a Zika outbreak, you should take careful precautions to prevent mosquito bites for three weeks so you do not spread Zika to mosquitoes that could spread the virus to other people. For more information on mosquito born infections and their prevention and treatment please visit cdc.gov/ zika. Or contact your healthcare provider.

Grand Rivers

ragon Boat Races F

By Amy Noles

of the first time, dragon boat racing is coming to Grand Rivers! This inaugural festival will take place on the shores of Kentucky Lake at the Lighthouse Landing this July 16, 2016. This familyfriendly event has been a huge hit in Paducah for the past few years. The Grand Rivers Dragon Boat race is an event to raise funds for Livingston County Helping Hands. The event consists of local and regional teams who will race against each other in a series of heats. The competition at these races is always great to watch and rivalries are sure to develop! The festivities will begin at 9am and conclude at approximately 4pm. Spectators are encouraged to come to the festival with their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy warm weather. Food vendors and music will keep the event lively throughout the day. The Perfect Location The event is the brainchild of Grand Rivers Tourism Commission’s Executive Director, Christine Thompson. “I became Executive Director in October 2015,” she told me. “During my college years at Murray State University I was on the rowing team. When I was thinking of new

events to bring to the area for 2016, I remembered how much fun I had traveling with my rowing team to different places and competing in regattas. I wanted to bring that to Grand Rivers.” “My old rowing coach and I began scouting out some of the waterfronts on the Lake,” Thompson explained. “We decided it wasn't feasible to hold a collegiate regatta in Grand Rivers for various logistical reasons. Then we hit on the idea of Dragon Boat Race instead! The course is much shorter which allows spectators to view the entire race. The Dragon Boat Festival allows us to add a fundraising element to the races.” The Grand Rivers Dragon Boat Festival will be produced by High Five Dragon Boat, LLC. They will provide the boats and train the crews

Dragon Boat Racing A Little History With a history of more than 2,500 years, the sport of dragon boat racing originated in ancient China. Modern day dragon boating has evolved into a worldwide competitive sport, bringing together millions across the globe annually. Festivals with traditional Asian flare and culture are commonplace alongside a dragon boat race in recent years. High level competitions have also been organized since the mid-1970s.

The sport's growth has been most commonly found at the grassroots level. Dragon boating has become an extremely popular vehicle for fundraising, and tool for corporate team building. Local communities combine these two concepts to breathe new life into their waterfront areas, and to stimulate their local economy.

on how to row them prior to the event. It is the goal of High Five to create an annual festival in Grand Rivers that provides not only a fun community-based event, but also has a positive economic impact on the area through tourism and fundraising.

How to Race a Dragon Boat Anyone can form a team which consists of 18-25 people. Any age, size, ability and gender can learn to paddle on a dragon boat team. Twenty paddlers are seated in 10 rows of two, with a drummer sitting in the bow facing the paddlers. The paddler's job is to paddle in unison with the entire team. The drummer's job is to beat the drum in sync with the paddlers and to motivate their team to the finish line. A steersperson (provided by the festival) stands in the stern of the boat, guiding the boat straight down the race course with a nine-foot oar. The fastest time down to the course wins. Sound simple doesn’t it! Get Your Team Together! Forming a dragon boat team is easy! Visit grandriversdragonboat.com for registration information. Included in your team registration is a practice session where they will show you how to paddle and race. Practice sessions and race day include all of the necessary equipment such as a boat, paddles, life vests, a drum and a steersperson/coach. Find yourself 20 co-workers, friends and/or family member to join you at this exciting event! Thompson hopes to have 12-15 teams competing in the race and is anticipating a few thousand people to be in Grand Rivers on race day. “July is a busy month for this area so I expect it will be well attended,” she told me. “I'm looking forward to this event and am excited to bring something that is both fun and competitive to Grand Rivers. Having this event is a great addition to the summer calendar and will give the visitors who are already here another fun day to add to their itinerary.” Ready to form a team? Just visit grandriversdragonboat.com. For information or to speak with Thompson, please call 888.493.0152. Livingston County Helping Hands Thompson wanted the funds raised to stay in the community, so she chose Livingston County Helping Hands as the recipient. Livingston County Helping Hands (LCHH) utilizes the United States Department of Agriculture monthly programs, TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) and CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program). In addition to these programs, Helping Hands receives donations of food from churches, businesses and individuals. Monetary donations are used to purchase food to help nearly 600 Livingston County residents each month. Livingston County Helping Hands also depends on the many volunteers who generously donate their time and energy to the everyday running of the food pantry. These volunteers stock shelves, fill food baskets, unload

he services provided by local nonprofit Heartland CARES, Inc., may not be needed by everyone, but the work they do in our community is an invaluable healthcare service. This organization specializes in providing quality medical care, prevention education, testing, and community awareness for those impacted by HIV and AIDS. Programs & Services The organization was founded in 1996 to develop a regional system offering HIV services. Heartland CARES is still primarily client-centered. The initial focus of the organization was to assist patients to achieve stable housing situations. Heartland CARES has since expanded to offer a variety of medical services.

To make their outreach as convenient and helpful as possible to their clients, Heartland CARES offers as many services as possible on-site. “We take a holistic approach to patients’ needs and care in one clinic,” explained Donna Reeder, Executive Director of Heartland CARES. They have an on-site pharmacy and there is a full-time counselor, who provides substance abuse and mental health counseling to clients. Most of the organizations 17 staff have multiple responsibilities. The staff make home visits and conduct testing, counseling, and education throughout the region. Two infectious disease physicians are subtracted with the clinic and are on call 24/7. The organization also assists with medical referrals for patients. Heartland CARES seeks to provide care that is holistic in approach. With that in mind they offer programs designed to help their clients maintain stable housing and access to nutritional food. Medical Case Management Heartland CARES has a Medical Case Management program that develops an individualized care plan for their patients’. It focuses on a comprehensive plan to meet their clients’ needs, such as identifying needed resources and establishing a realistic timeline for a patients’ progress. HIV & AIDS Awareness Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, is a virus that attacks the immune system. The virus destroys a type of white blood cell called a T-helper cell and makes copies of itself instead inside of the cells. When a person is infected, they are increasingly unable to fight off infections and diseases. HIV is found in some of the body fluids of an infected person: Semen, blood, vaginal and anal fluids and breast milk. It cannot be transmitted through sweat, saliva, or urine. The most common way for someone to become infected with HIV is by having unprotected sex. Infection is also risked through infected needles, syringes, or can be transmitted from an infected mother to a child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. HIV, if untreated, is in danger of developing into Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, in under 10 years. With treatment, the development of HIV into AIDS can be prevented indefinitely. “We try to keep the person’s virile load suppression down. That’s the amount of HIV actually in your blood,” Reeder explained. That number is determined through a blood test. For HIV testing, “We use the Ora-Quick rapid test,” Reeder explained. “It’s a mouth swab. That tests to see if you have the antibodies that are produced if you do have HIV. If that test is positive, then we do the next step, which is a blood test.” The testing and results all protect client confidentiality. The tests are anonymous. The Prevalence of HIV & AIDS In America, there were an estimated 1.2 million persons, over the age of 13, living with the disease at the end of 2012. This does not include the estimated 12.8 percent of people whose infections had not been diagnosed. The number of people in America living with Stage 3 HIV (or AIDS), was 20,896 in 2014. Living with HIV and AIDS is further complicated by the stigma surrounding the disease. Heartland CARES is committed to decreasing the stigma through education about HIV contraction. “People aren’t fully educated on how it’s transmitted. And so… people get shunned from their families and friends, because people fear they’re going to get it from them,” Reeder said. “If you can lessen the stigma, it helps with the family and the friends relationships, even with finding jobs.”

Psychological Testing & Why It May Be the Right Step By J. Patrick Kerr for Four Rivers Behavioral Health

R

emember that old public service promotion, “The More You Know…?” It certainly ‘strikes a chord.’ For so many things, the unknown is what causes stress and worry. This is especially true when the unknown involves your children and their health. When you have a child that is struggling, it is a constant weight on your shoulders, especially if you don’t know what to do. A scraped knee or a runny nose is easy – a bandage or tissue usually does the trick. But, when you have a young son that isn’t walking well, long after the time he should be, or a daughter who is withdrawn and not really talking, you know that a bandage isn’t going to help. Finding Solutions At Four Rivers Behavioral Health, we recognize that mental health concerns don’t have quick fixes. And, until the problem is identified, you can’t even begin to think about solutions. Four Rivers Behavioral Health has recently opened a comprehensive Psychological Testing & Assessment Center to help get to the root of mental health issues and then start working on solutions. We can now conduct detailed psychological evaluations of cognitive functioning, academic achievement, development, personality, behavior, and executive functioning. Four Rivers Behavioral Health works with toddlers, children, adolescents and adults to assess problems related to many disorders and disabilities. These include: Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disorders, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Delays, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders and other Co-occurring Disorders. We can also conduct IQ Testing for those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. These tests are helpful and necessary to determine if someone qualifies for publicly funded specialized services. Individualized & Specific Of course, testing is not a one-size-fits-all process and at Four Rivers Behavioral Health everyone is approached on an individualized basis. This ensures that testing and recommendations for follow-up are specific to their needs. Psychological testing can be helpful in identifying problems, especially in children. Psychologists administer tests and other measures for a variety

of reasons. For example, if a student is having trouble in school, it could be because of a reading problem such as dyslexia. But it also might be because of an attention problem such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or maybe the student is having trouble with impulse control. Four Rivers Behavioral Health’s Psychological Testing & Assessment Center may help determine a specific diagnosis. And, the best part come up with individualized treatment options to begin the healing process. Simple, Easy, Personal Psychological testing is not as ‘scary’ as it sounds. There are no wires hooked up to bodies or electrodes glued to foreheads or anything even close to that! Usually, it involves two or more sessions face-to-face with a counselor talking or participating in activities designed to help reach a determination. Sessions usually range from one to two hours. After a few appointments, a detailed report is prepared and a follow-up session is scheduled to discuss next steps. If you have concerns for a loved one and believe they can benefit from Psychological Testing, talk with your doctor about options or simply call Four Rivers Behavioral Health for more information or to schedule an appointment. Four Rivers Behavioral Health’s Psychological Testing & Assessment Center can be reached by calling 270.442.7121 or toll-free at 866.442.7121.

Yard Safety By Parkview Nursing & Rehabilitation

S

ummer is the time for trips to the pool and barbecues with the family. But before you get carried away with seasonal fun, don’t forget that summer is also the time for yard work.

Keeping your yard green and groomed can be a rewarding activity. But it’s important to mind your safety in the process. Take a look at these safety tips before you take on your lawn this year: Dress the Part Dressing properly is an important step in ensuring lawn care safety. • Make sure your shoes are closed-toe and durable for foot protection and better balance. •

Always wear a broad-brimmed hat.

Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. The National Institutes of Health recommends that you reapply sunscreen every 80 minutes.

Protect your eyes from flying debris with safety glasses.

Use lawn and garden gloves for hand protection and a more secure grip.

Educate Yourself on Equipment Before taking the helm of heavy lawn care, be sure you understand how to use your lawn equipment properly. Most lawn equipment comes with manuals and instructive labels to ensure users know how to operate the machinery safely. Never assume that all types of lawn tools are alike. If you are using lawn care chemicals, such as pesticides and weed killer, read the labels carefully before use. The labels explain how to use the product while giving helpful information on safe storage, first aid and whom to call in case of an accident.

Summer is the peak of mosquito season, so don’t forget to apply bug repellent. The Kentucky Department for Public Health recommends repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Heed the Heat You can’t have summer yard work without summer heat. During these months, heat exhaustion becomes a serious risk. And anyone over the age of 65 is at a higher risk for heat-related illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Remember these tips: • Limit your time in the yard to the morning or early evening hours. •

Drink plenty of water.

Take frequent breaks in shady areas.

Avoid alcoholic beverages before working.

Know Your Limits When working in the yard, always pay attention to how you feel. If you have a minor physical ailment, such as arthritis, or your balance isn’t

as good as it used to be, consider asking a friend or family member for assistance with heavier equipment. Or call a professional service to take care of the bigger jobs.

Get well and go

Home.

Pay attention to possible signs of heat exhaustion, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion and rapid heart rate. And be aware of any medications you are taking that may impair your ability to use machinery. It’s good to speak with your doctor before engaging in certain types of outdoor work.

ince 1999, Master Gardeners have organized a standard flower show as part of the McCracken County Fair. Vegetables are judged as well as flowers. The 2016 show is once again sponsored by the McCracken County Extension Master Gardener Association in conjunction with Open Gate Garden Club and Perennial Gardener’s Garden Club. Staged in Floral Hall at Carson Park, 300 Joe Clifton Drive in Paducah, this year’s theme is “A Dance Recital.” The show runs Monday, June 20 through Saturday, June 25. A $3 general admission ticket to the fairgrounds is required to view the exhibit which is open to the public each day from 5:30-9pm. Anyone can enter exhibits in the flower and vegetable show without charge. All hanging containers must be pre-registered by June 17 by texting 270.519.6405 or e-mailing cardaier@gmail.com. Designs will bring to life through flowers the popular television show, Dancing With the Stars. Classes include: First Dance (any design style or type intended to evoke a girl’s first dance), Ballet (stabile-kinetic design), Viennese Waltz (traditional mass design), Paso Doble (stretch design), and Line Dance (parallel design). Only adult novices - those who have never won a Blue Ribbon in design in a standard flower show - may enter First Dance. Children - whether in kindergarten or high school, are encouraged to enter. Youth compete against children of similar age. Divisions are: K-Grade 2; Grades 3-5; Grades 6-8; and High School. Youth will create

Horticulture Division Entries in the horticulture competition will be accepted Monday, June 20, from 7:30-10:30am. To enter cut plant material, bring to Floral Hall a fresh, home-grown plant specimen in good condition, clean, and free of pests and disease, along with identifying information. Depending upon the plant, a single flower, leaf or branch is exhibited. A single hosta leaf or single hydrangea bloom would be displayed as cut plant material, but an entire orchid in bloom would be displayed as a container-grown plant. Bottles for displaying cut plant material, as well as wedging material and water, are provided. All entries should be correctly labeled with scientific names or currently accepted scientific identification for educational value; common names are permitted too. Cut plant material will be removed from Floral Hall on Thursday morning to prepare for the design competition. Containergrown plants will be displayed for duration of show and must be retrieved Monday morning, June 27. Exhibitors may enter multiple specimens in a class, so long as each entry is a different species, variety, cultivar, type or color. Exhibitors are limited to 12 entries. Container-Grown Plants (containers no larger than 16” in any direction and grown by exhibitor at least 90 days) and Combination Plantings (containers no larger than 16” in any direction and grown together by exhibitor as a single unit at least six weeks) may also be entered. iRescue Western Kentucky Wildlife Rehab

Saving Our

Wild Fur Babies By Amy Noles

W

hat do you do when you find an injured raccoon, or a baby squirrel with no mom to feed it, or an injured deer? You call Bill and Beth Ott at Western Kentucky Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation. They provide a safe place for abandoned, sick or injured wildlife to be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. I can’t think of a more worthy organization that iSupport this month. Wildlife Rescue & Rehab When I called Beth Ott to set up an interview with her about Western Kentucky Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc., (WKWRR) here’s what she said: “I’d love to chat now, but I am waiting on a hawk to be delivered, and I’m feeding two squirrels, three bunnies, and two baby raccoons. Can we schedule another time?” Not your usual response! WKWRR is a 501C3 non-profit organization organized by Bill and Beth Ott and run out of their home near Murray. They pride themselves on providing a safe place for abandoned, sick or injured wildlife to be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. The Otts are originally from Michigan. On being asked what brought them to our neck of the woods, Beth chuckled, “Try shoveling snow in Michigan for a few winters.” They had visited our area several times and decided that when their children were grown that they would move here…and so they did. Raise & Return The Otts have been in the wildlife rehab business for about 18 years. It began when they found two abandoned raccoons which they nursed and raised. “We raised them all wrong, Ott explained. “We couldn’t release them back into the wild, so we had to keep them for ourselves.” After

this, the Otts wanted to learn the proper way to help these animals so that they could be released back into their natural habitat.

people to call her at 270.345.2442. She has anywhere from 20-40 phone calls a day from people about many different wildlife issues.

Last year, the Otts took in over 200 animals. They keep the babies in the house in incubators, and since they live in the woods, they have big enclosed areas to keep the bigger ones outside. This helps them to acclimate to the weather. The Otts have found several places that work well when it’s time to release the animals back to the wild.

What is a wildlife rehabilitator? A wildlife rehabilitator is a person licensed to take in orphaned and injured wildlife from and for the general public. Orphaned baby animals will be raised properly and injured or ill critters are rehabilitated. The main responsibility of a wildlife rehabilitator is to the animals they are caring for. The goal is to get these animals back into the wild where they are supposed to be, and want to be. That's what it is all about... the animals remaining wild. They are not pets! Keeping handling and human exposure to a minimum is vital for the animals' survival in the wild later on. Why do animals end up with a wildlife rehabber? Animals end up with a wildlife rehabilitator for various reasons. It can be a baby squirrel that fell out of a nest, usually after a storm, and found by school kids; a songbird that flew into a window and has a concussion and needs a safe place to recover; an opossum mother hit by a car with living babies in the pouch that caring individuals saved and brought to a rehabber; a baby raccoon sitting next to his dead mother on the side of the road crying; the litter of cottontail rabbits whose mother fell victim to a lawn mower or a wild animal hurt by dogs and cats...the stories are endless.

You Can Help! The Otts have not received a dime for all their hard work, but they would love for people to donate to their charity. “We had a raccoon that had to have surgery last week, Beth told me. “The surgery cost $641, and we paid every penny of that.” If you would like to donate to their organization, you can visit WKWRR's Facebook page and hit the ‘donate now’ button or visit paypal.com and use the email bott@wk.net. Beth also encourages

What do they do with them? In the case of infant critters where a reunion with the mother has been ruled out, they will be raised and taught how to relate to others of their species, given a chance to develop their survival skills, know what their predators are, and how to find food and shelter before they will be released back into the wild. What else does a wildlife rehabber do besides caring for wildlife? Another important part of being a wildlife rehabilitator is dealing with

How do I get a wildlife rehabilitation permit? In Kentucky, the wildlife rehabilitation permit authorizes a person to rescue, raise, and arrange for veterinary medical care or orphaned, sick, displaced, or injured native wildlife with the prudent goal of releasing the wildlife back to its natural habitat. A wildlife rehabilitation permit shall be obtained prior to possessing live native wildlife. It is illegal to remove young wildlife from the wild, you are risking citation, and a permit will not be issued for illegally taken wildlife. These animals should be left in the wild, or returned there, and legal recourse for injured and orphaned wildlife is the prompt transfer of these animals to a presently permitted wildlife rehabilitator. Mammal, reptile, and amphibian rehabilitation requires only this state permit. In order to hold and rehabilitate federally protected birds (Migratory Bird Treaty Act) including raptors, songbirds, and waterfowl, a person shall have both a state wildlife rehabilitation permit and a federal rehabilitation permit. USFWS requires proof of a state permit before issuing the federal permit, therefore, KDFWR will issue a rehabilitation permit for birds, but it will be invalid until you also possess the federal permit. the public. Once spring starts and the first animals of the season, usually squirrels, are being born, the calls are coming in about pink hairless babies found on the ground. There are a lot of caring folks out there that go the extra mile to help out that infant and take it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife facility. A lot of people attempt to care for these animals on their own and only call for help when they see that their approach didn't work.

Visit fw.ky.gov/Wildlife/Pages/ Wildlife-Rehabilitation.aspx for more information. If you have an wildife rescue question, call Beth at 270.345.2442.

iLearn 5 Signs You Need to

Clear Negative

Energy

By Susan Edwards A Licensed Spiritual Healer & owner of Wildhair Studio & Rock Shop

L

ife is fluid. Everyone experiences the ebb and flow of being human with everyday highs and lows. Sometimes relationships start, mature and wither, people get sick, jobs disappear and disasters can strike. So how do you know if it’s just life, or if you are being affected by something more, like negative energy? Here are five clear signs your problem may be energetic in nature.

You are constantly sick for no apparent good reason and none of your doctors can give you a diagnosis … it may be time to explore the energy around you.

You’re experiencing, “free floating anxiety.” Again, no obvious reason for your anxiety and yet you are experiencing some level of panic attacks.

You’re constantly feeling “drained.” You’re tired beyond what would be normal for your level of activity.

You’re at odds with everyone, your friends, family and coworkers. Constantly.

Nothing, and I mean nothing is going right. Your world is literally crumbling around you, through no fault of your own.

Take A Deep Breath Ok, so you’ve clicked off one or more of the five boxes. Now what? First, take a deep breath. All of us have stress and some level of stale, or negative energy in our lives. The trick is to recognize it, and know how to clear it before it becomes problematic. The good news is you can clear it with some simple, effective methods. Please note if you are getting sick, be sure to rule out all the usual suspects and see a medical professional. If necessary, clean up your lifestyle. Make sure you’re eating right, exercising, sleeping well, and managing your stress. Assuming you’ve already addressed that, then and only then, can you expect these energetic techniques to help. With that said, here are some simple things you can do to clear up stale energy and get things flowing in a positive direction.

58

• JUNE 2016 iListWesternKentucky.com

Be Positive First, most clients tell me, they’ll be happier when things start to

go right and be more positive when their lives improve. They are always resistant when I explain they have it backwards. Things will improve in their lives and they will be happier when they get positive. This is often the most challenging part of the change. But it is the critical adjustment that insures your success. Here’s Your Assignment… • Stop talking about everything that is going wrong, how awful life is and how bad you feel. Start talking about what is going right (however miniscule it might be!) and how much you love feeling good. •

Feel genuine gratitude for the good things in your life. Every time you are tempted to talk about what’s wrong, pause and find something to say about what’s right.

Stop gossiping and criticizing everyone – whether you feel they deserve it or not – stop. Right now! Like mom often reminded us, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Good advice!

Eliminate or isolate toxic relationships. If you are the one that is toxic, work on your personal clean up.

Clean Up Your Life! Okay, that takes care of your personal energetic assignment. Next, on to the house and office clean up. •

Do a physical cleaning. Stale and negative energy can get ‘stuck’ in clutter.

Open windows and ‘air’ the place out. Visualize bringing in fresh, clean energy, bright and cheerful. Turn on the fan to facilitate moving the old out and the fresh in.

Use noise to break up stale energy and move it out. Play lively happy music, clap, sing, say prayers, use bells... you can use anything that you have available.

Remove overtly negative items. Be mindful of your surroundings and what you are allowing into your life. Don’t invite problems with demonic images, distressing music, artwork or anything that would scare your sweet old granny!

Good for the Goose...

What's

By Britt Allgood

I

'm sure you’ve heard of the old saying, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”. What exactly does that mean? Well, to me it means that men and women deserve equality. That being said, since I wrote about Mother’s day last month, I’m paying equal time to Father’s Day this month. Do you and your Dad have any father’s day traditions? I can honestly and somewhat regretfully say that my father and I don’t. My father and I get along fine. We have several common interests and several things we don’t necessarily agree upon. I love him just the same even though we are separated by distance. To this day I still rely on him for his wisdom and assistance. We just never developed a Father’s Day tradition. A Special Day for Dad If you read my article last month, you know that my brother and I attempted (and I use that term loosely) to cook breakfast on Mother’s

day. We really didn’t try this on Father’s day because Mom was up and a much better cook. So, what did we do on this very special day for Dad? When we were younger, Mom would treat us all to a Father’s day lunch out after church. Generally it was a nice restaurant and sometimes we would go to a movie. As I got older (i.e. over 21), I occasionally took Dad out for beer and a game of billiards. My Father taught me a great number of things in my life. He taught me the value of hard work and doing your best at whatever you are attempting. He shared his love of nature and growing things. And I found I also enjoyed hunting and fishing – a love that was developed through many days in the woods. I remember playing with his tools until he showed me the proper way to use them. As I grow older, I have grown closer to my father, and respect his opinion - even when I don’t agree with it. Hunting & Eating About now, you may be wondering where I’m going with this article, especially since it’s about cooking. I mentioned hunting and fishing which meant that we had to clean and prepare the game we hunted. Dad is also a good cook, especially slow cooked barbeque, and he can still whip up a pan of biscuits and a good old fashioned breakfast when the occasion arises. Some of my fondest memories of time spent with my Dad, and brother, are when we would go on hunting trips. My father, brother and I traveled to Wisconsin with another family when I was about 11 for a week of deer and squirrel hunting. We stayed on a large farm that had about 500 acres of wooded private hunting land and many open fields along its boundary.

Our hosts lived a rustic lifestyle – literally in a house without running water! They baked bread daily (while we were there) and ran a dairy farm. We ate venison every day with rich brown gravy, homemade bread and freshly churned butter. We helped out with the chores including carrying water from the well into the house. I loved it as a kid, but it’s a demanding life. Male Bonding Over the years, Dad and I have hunted all the traditional game - deer, turkey, quail, dove, rabbit and squirrel. We’ve also tried our hand at fish and frogs. I tell you there has to be some male bonding going on when you are up to your knees in mud with a frog spear and a flashlight at midnight! We ate all kinds of things on these trips - from bologna, (if the hunting or fishing wasn’t so good,) to venison stew or barbeque cooked all day at base camp. Hearty breakfasts would carry us through the day and a soda, and pack of crackers might do until we had dinner. Whatever we were lucky enough to harvest was consumed with gusto and appreciation to Mother Nature. My dad, brother and I don’t get to hunt much together anymore and, I don’t think we’ve been fishing as a family in over two decades, but those memories are still near and dear to my heart. Dad is in his late seventies now and it’s a bit more difficult to get up on the cold mornings for hunting, but he still likes to hang a fishing line over the side of the boat when he can. My brother and his sons are now hunting together and I get away to the woods whenever possible. Nature’s Bounty When I’m lucky enough to partake of nature’s bounty, I use as much of the harvest as I can. I also use venison or rabbit in traditional dishes in place of beef or chicken. So, today I’m going to share my version of Venison bourgeon with you. As a bonus, I’m also including a marinade that an old bird hunting buddy shared with me years ago. We used it on dove, but it is excellent on chicken as well. I hope your Father is still around and you can spend Father’s Day with him. If not, I hope you have fond memories to hold close to your heart. Live, laugh, love and eat well my friends.

Beef or Venison Bourguignon Original recipe courtesy of Ina Garten

Servings: 6

3 1 1 1 TBSP Olive Oil 8 oz Bacon Diced 2 ½ LB Beef Roast or Venison cut into 1 inch cubes Kosher salt Fresh ground black pepper 1 LB carrots, peeled and sliced diagonally into 1 inch chunks 2 large yellow onions, sliced 2 tsp chopped garlic ½ cup Cognac 1 (750 ml) bottle good dry red wine (Burgundy or Pinot Noir) 2 cups beef stock 1 TBSP tomato paste 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (1/2 tsp dried) 4 TBSP unsalted butter at room temperature, divided

TBSP all-purpose flour LB frozen pearl onions, whole (optional) LB fresh mushrooms with stems discarded and caps sliced

Preheat oven to 250oF Heat oil in a large Dutch oven or oven safe skillet. Add bacon and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring constantly, until bacon is lightly browned. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon to a large plate. Dry the beef/venison cubes with paper towels and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. In batches of single layers, sear the beef/venison in the hot oil for 3 to 5 minutes, turning to brown on all sides. Remove the seared cubes to the plate with the bacon and continue searing until all the beef/venison is browned. Set aside. Toss the carrots, onions, 1 TBSP of salt and 2 tsp of pepper in the fat in the pan and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are lightly browned. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the Cognac, stand back and carefully ignite with a match to burn off the alcohol (Be careful - the alcohol can flash off). Put the meat and bacon back into the pot with the juices. Add the bottle of wine plus enough beef stock to almost cover the meat. Add the tomato paste and thyme. Bring to a simmer, cover the pot with a tight fitting lid and place in the oven for about 1 hour 15 minutes or until the meat and vegetables are very tender. Remove from the oven and place on a stove top burner. Melt 2 TBSP of butter in a skillet and add the flour to make a roux. Allow the flour to brown a bit while stirring constantly. Add to the stew and stir in completely. Add the frozen onions (optional). In the skillet, melt the remaining butter and sauté the mushrooms about 10 minutes and then add them to the stew. Bring the stew to a boil then lower the heat and simmer an additional 15 minutes. Season to taste.

Marinade for Dove, Duck or Chicken ¼ cup olive oil – good quality 2 Tbsp soy sauces ½ cup plus 2 Tbsp orange juice 3-4 dashes Tabasco 1 ½ tsp chopped fresh ginger 1 Tbsp brown sugar Garlic cloves – mashed as many as you like

Whisk together all the ingredients in a glass, ceramic, or stainless steel bowl. Add the skinless dove, woodcock, or duck breast medallions and/ or legs. Marinate, covered in refrigerator for at least three hours or overnight. Cut medallions in half (wrap dove with bacon) and thread on skewers. Grill until done.

PA*BREW*CAH That's How We Spell Beer Fest! By Amy Noles

“A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” -Czech proverb

D

o you like craft beer? Were you excited when Dry Ground Brewing Company and Paducah Beer Werks opened this past year? Then we have the event for you! The Paducah Symphony Orchestra is excited to announce a new signature event, the PA*BREW*CAH Beer Fest. This full-on beer festival will take place on Saturday, June 18, 2016. From noon to 5pm, in the floodwall parking lot of historic Downtown Paducah, you can sample beers, enjoy delicious food, and listen to great live music. We say “cheers” to that! The inaugural PA*BREW*CAH Beer Fest is a five hour tasting event that will feature 19 craft breweries from across the region. Ticket holders will receive a commemorative beer glass, a beer card good for multiple samples of beer - all for only $25. The festival also features live music, and several food vendors will be on hand for an additional fee. This new event was the brainchild of the Paducah Symphony’s Executive Director, Daniel Sene. “Since I am originally from the Pacific Northwest, where craft breweries are plentiful, I have seen my fair share of beer fests,” Sene told me. “I am in no way a beer aficionado, however I do love a good craft beer! The PSO had been looking for a new signature fundraiser for a couple years, so when Dry Ground Brewing Company and Beer Werks opened, I thought Paducah and the region could benefit from a full scale beer festival. PA*BREW*CAH Beer Fest is meant to be a signature Paducah festival.”

The Breweries The 19 confirmed breweries include: Apocalypse Brew Works, Blue Stallion Brewing, Country Boy Brewing, Dry Ground Brewing, Ei8htball Brewing, Ethereal Brewing, Goodwood, Kentucky Ale, Leinenkugel's, New Belgium Brewing, Paducah Beer Werks, Perrylodgic Brewing, Sam Adams, West Sixth Brewing, Schlafly, Sierra Nevada, Tin Man Brewing Co., West Sixth Brewing and White Squirrel Brewery. These breweries are an eclectic mix and are from all over the tri-state area, including Louisville, Lexington, St. Louis, and of course, Paducah. Todd Blume of Paducah Beer Werks is pumped about this festival. “I am very excited to be a part of Paducah's first craft beer festival,” he told me. “Paducah is known for its art, quilting, BBQ, and soon, for its craft beer. Both local breweries have made waves in the craft beer world bringing attention to Paducah. My hope is this will be a wonderful new attraction for the region and state.” The Music The music line-up is quite incredible as well. From 12-1pm, Savage Radley will be playing. This band hails from Murray to be exact, and was the winner of this year’s WKMS Battle of the Bands. Stemming from the tradition of delta folk, Shaina Goodman and Stephen Montgomery meld themes of community, loyalty, heartbreak, and perseverance into their captivating indie folk narratives. The Wheelhouse Rousters will be on stage from 1:15-3pm. The Wheelhouse Rousters draw not only their moniker and musical style from the river and its industry, but their ebb and flow of energy. Focusing on long forgotten songs gathered by Mary Wheeler of Paducah the Rousters give a new twist to old tunes. Comprised of Josh Coffey, Eddie Coffey, and Nathan Blake Lynn, this band is a local favorite.

To round things out, The Solid Rock’It Boosters will close out the day from 3:15-5pm. Grab your moonshine jug and enjoy ‘Hott Rodd’ Todd Anderson and ‘Low Down’ Nathan Brown in a rockin’ performance. These local legendary musicians form the core of the band Solid Rock’it Boosters. They are famous for their wild honky-tonk & hillbilly stomp style. Their music is a mix of hillbilly boogie, rockabilly and honky-tonk. The ‘Booster Club’ is a rotating cast of amazing local musicians who accompany the band on stage during their shows.

Why We’re Drinking! Proceeds from PA*BREW*CAH Beer Fest will benefit the education programs and services of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra (PSO). The programs include Maestro Raffaele Ponti visiting over 1,470 students in 13 schools, the Class Acts Education Series at the Carson Center, Musical Story Time, at the McCracken County Public Library, and so much more.
