Family Taking Care of Family
R
eady for Easter and spring weather, Wayne and Trinidad McGee, owners of New Haven Assisted Living, are our cover feature this month. They are joined by their daughter Grace, (holding her baby chicks,) and their first granddaughter Lydia Wilford. New Haven Assisted Living is a unique group of smaller, specialized assisted living facilities located throughout Kentucky. New Haven has residences in Paducah, Kevil, Marion and Princeton, as well as two locations in Franklin. Each has a local feel and special features that make living there as close to ‘home’ as the McGee’s and their staff can accomplish.
Inspired by Mom
Wayne’s mother, Frances McGee, was the inspiration for the first New Haven facility which opened in Franklin in 2000. She was always the caregiver of the family but after a stroke she needed help in order to live at home. “It was important to us that mom was provided with reliable, caring support from someone that had a genuine interest in her well-being,” he explained. Wayne decided that what he needed to do was to build a facility that would meet the needs of people just like his mother - where residents would be taken care of and feel at home.

Bring Your Favorite Easy Chair
New Haven Assisted provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their facilities have both private rooms and suites which can accommodate married couples. Residents are encouraged to bring personal items and furniture with them to New Haven. In fact, while I was interviewing Trinidad McGee for this feature story a family were moving their loved one into a sunny room. Not just small items such as books, or pictures to add a touch of home, but a favorite easy chair, a dresser and even lamps were being carried in.
have their lipstick! Our male residents in particular love the fact that we serve a home cooked meal and our ladies like that all our homes have a beauty parlor on site.” “We take residents to doctor’s appointment, for eye exams and to see the dentist,” said Trinidad. “Even clothes shopping if they want us to. And sometimes, if they’re having a bad day, we take them out for ice cream! They love riding in a car because it feels normal.”
"Family Taking Care of Family"
“Studies have shown the importance of having personal items around when you move to an assisted living facility,” Trinidad explained. “It really helps to ease the transition. We are pleased to accommodate furnishings that can fit safely into our resident’s rooms.” New Haven Assisted Living locations can help provide that continuous care which makes their clients lives comfortable and safe. “The main criterion for our clients is that they can be safely assisted from the building in the event of emergency,” explained Wayne. “As long as that’s possible we can offer a ‘safe haven’ at New Haven!”
Personalized Care
Personalized care is the benchmark at New Haven. There is at least two staff members for every 11 clients (or less). “We are proud to have one of the highest staff to client ratios in the country,” Trinidad told me. “Of course all our locations are state licensed and inspected. Our employees receive state and national training, and certification. But we want to go above and beyond the standard care so we provide additional training, and orientation for all staff members. Every employee is given a drug test and their background checked. This is to ensure that clients get the best care possible that’s as close to ‘home’ as we can accomplish - the care you would want your mother or father to receive.
sleeping.”
“The last two years have been emotionally difficult,” Trinidad told me. “We lost a wonderful gentlemen at New Haven Paducah. Whenever a lady sat down, Mr. John Barker would always push their chair in. He had a kind word for everyone around him and loved to laugh. Watermelon was his favorite snack at midnight when everyone else was
“We had a much loved female veteran at our facility who would describe the adventures she had endured during her time in the service. She said, thinking back, “they made me the women I am today! Being strong willed makes it a little easier to endure life’s tragedies.” “Mrs. Ruth Smith, our southern Belle, passed away. She was living at our Franklin facility for seven years and was 94 years old. We are so grateful that we were able to keep the piano from her home at New Haven in Franklin. When it’s played you can still feel her zest and warmth. We were all so privileged to have known her.”
Meeting Individual Needs
When a new resident is considering New Haven we meet one on one with family members,” explained Trinidad. “We want to know as much as possible about their needs and answer questions or family concerns. We are very fortunate to have reliable, long term staff and we try to arrange schedules so that their shifts don’t change. This means that our residents are cared for by the same people every day. Our staff get to know them and often become friends. The staff person they most trust will be the one bathing them, or helping them into bed.” This personal approach means that staff often become an extension of the resident’s family. “Back when our residents were younger it wasn’t uncommon for the man of the house to find his clothes laid out on the bed each morning. “Trinidad told me. “A lady always went to the beauty parlor to get her hair done. Our clients want things to be as ‘normal’ as possible. Sometimes that means making sure that gentlemen get help with shaving if necessary and our ladies always

The beautiful koi pond and gazebo at New Haven, Kevil, where residents can sit and enjoy the sunshine.
“Her niece, Betty Ruth Ditmore, is a frequent visitor and after her mother was gone she “adopted” another client whom she now comes to see. Ms. Ditmore, who runs a business in Franklin likes to surprise the residents with ice cream from time to time. We really are a family here and I consider Betty Ruth my friend.” The McGee’s are intimately involved with the day-to-day running of each New Haven facility. For example, Wayne usually delivers groceries to the Franklin facilities each Tuesday. “The residents know he’s coming and often chat with him,” said Trinidad. “They can tell him directly if they have any concerns or requests for their favorite food. They can talk to him about anything.”
Not everyone wants to eat breakfast at 7am. We have some clients who want cereal at 5am and others that prefer to take it easy until later, and then eat bacon and eggs. - Wayne McGee
Assisted Living Your Way!
The McGee’s and the New Haven staff take a very personal approach to caring for their clients. “Not everyone wants to eat breakfast at 7am,” Wayne explained. “We have some clients who want cereal at 5am and others that prefer to take it easy until later, and then eat bacon and eggs. Lunches and dinner are home cooked meals, and we’re proud of our Christmas dinners each year when we invite all the clients’ family members, and show off our family recipes.”
Caregivers Never Quit Being Caregivers
Service like that is only possible with dedicated and experienced staff. The McGee’s are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the success of the New Haven Assisted Living facilities. “Carolyn Bledsoe has been working with patients at new Haven since 1999,” Trinidad told me. “Colleen Mitchell is a great cook who makes everyone’s favorite dishes. Franklin Wilma has been a night caregiver for the past 13 years and is always there for residents who need help or can’t sleep. These, and really all our staff are the heart of New Haven. Caregivers never quit being caregivers!”
Patience & Understanding
The McGee’s strive to provide support and understanding to all their residents. “It’s sometimes hard for our clients to remember every detail of their lives,” explained Trinidad. Perhaps the hardest part for family members is when a client doesn’t recognize them, or remember a special holiday or event. It’s best to be patient and understanding. Try and call ahead before your visit and ask if ‘grandpa is having a good day.’ Be flexible in your visiting times and days so you can spend time with and Mom when she’s alert and rested.” For more information please visit their website at newhavenal.com. You may also call Wayne or Trinidad McGee directly at 270.559.1131 or email wpmtmm@gmail.com. The McGee’s and the staff of New Haven Assisted Living are always pleased to talk with you about the specific needs of a loved one and show you around one of their beautiful facilities.

MCHS presents
T
he McCracken County High School Fine Arts Department will be bringing this famous musical to life this month on stage. They are delighted to present their 2017 spring musical production. Legally Blonde the Musical is coming to the McCracken County High School C-Plant Performing Arts Center for three performances on April 20th, 21st, and 22nd. This is a fun feel-good comedy you won’t want to miss! Director Mary Bowden selected this musical because it is unlike anything MCHS has done before. It helps her meet one of her biggest goals as an educator - to offer her students a wide variety of opportunities and expose them to different genres of shows. Last year they opted for the "classical musical" route with a great production of Fiddler on the Roof. This year she knew she wanted something contemporary and bright to contrast that – Legally Blonde is the perfect choice. “It started in a meeting when I said, ‘We need this year's show to be something like Legally Blonde!’” Bowden told me. “The idea just stuck! This is our fourth musical, and the first to feature a female in the main character role. The females in our department have been waiting for this, and they have welcomed this opportunity with open arms.”
Legally Blonde - The Plot
The musical follows Elle Woods, the Malibu, California, sorority sister who, after being dumped by her aspiring politician boyfriend, Warner Huntington III, for not being “serious” enough, uses her underestimated intelligence to get into Harvard Law School - just to impress him. Far from her comfort zone, Elle is suddenly a misfit, who, with the help of new friends Emmett, a teaching assistant with a working class background, and Paulette, a down-on-her-luck hairdresser, finds her true calling in life (hint: It’s not Warner). Also guiding her is a “Greek Chorus” made up of her UCLA sorority sisters, who only she (and later Paulette) can see. The journey isn’t always easy, especially with the challenges brought upon by Harvard-elite mean girl Vivienne Kensington, who also happens to be Warner’s new girlfriend, and the agendadriven Professor Callahan.

Creating a production such as Legally Blonde is a huge commitment for both HS staff and of course for the cast. MCHS had auditions the last full week of January and began rehearsals January 31st. They hold rehearsals five days a week, though the specific rehearsal schedule for each student is different. Some rehearsals are strictly music, and others are acting, staging, and choreography. Kendel Ponchock, who plays Elle, rehearses every day but the average student rehearses three or four times per week.`
Other MCHS students and staff starring in the musical include Matthew Jordan, Maddi Johnson, Max Medford, Kiersten Slankard, Virginia Walsh, Emily McCollum, Mr. Matthew Houser, Mr. Randy Hines, Mr. Jeremy Watwood, Prince Joshi, Andrew Castleman, Claudia Tucker, Martha McHaney, Cameron Ezell, Trey Pullen, Mary Baker, Sydney Carroll, Madison Heath, Hope Hodges,Madeline Jones, Camryn Moore, Jasee Nichols, Cheyenne Nordstrom, Ansley Rice, Shelby Stephens, Hailey Watson, Raegan Archer, Alex Bohannon, Lucas Bohannon, Caleb Buford, Dan Erickson, Zachary Farmer, Summer Groessel, Kaylee Hileman, Erik Hylko, and McKenzie Moss.

Becoming Elle Woods
Playing the lead in Legally Blonde is MCHS senior, Kendel Ponchock. Kendel is a Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts alumni in Drama, MCHS Varsity Singer, and MCHS Drama Club Vice President. A few of Kendel's previous roles on the MCHS stage include Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Abigail Williams in The Crucible, The Sour Kangaroo in Seussical the Musical, and Alice Sycamore in You Can't Take It With You. Next year Kendel will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design to major in Performing Arts. “Legally Blonde is the ultimate self-empowerment show,” Bowden told me. “If you liked the movie, the storyline is very similar, and the characters you know and love from the film are featured - they even sing! I think everyone should come and see the show. It is bright, bubbly, and fun! The talent displayed by my fellow high school
students is nothing short of impressive, and you will leave feeling encouraged and with a smile on your face!”
The Cast Invites You!
"The show is grand!” Barton Christmas, who plays Warner Huntington III, told me. “This is McCracken's first production on this scale, and rehearsals have been this giant flurry of new costumes, props and set pieces. I think people coming to MCHS for their first show, they'll be like, ‘Wow! Look at what a high school can produce!’ And for our returning audience, this show is just that much bigger and better.” "Being in Legally Blonde has been the most amazing experience,” said Jessie Elliott (Paulette). “From hardworking rehearsals, to working with a bulldog and becoming everything that is the hilarious Paulette. I know for a fact this show is going to be stellar. The story is heartwarming, energetic, and hilarious. You can't miss it!" "Legally Blonde is an amazing joy to be a part of,” said Cameron Durbin (Professor Callahan). “My character is serious fun to dive into and watching the vibrant fun of the show come to life is a very beautiful thing. We have amazingly talented actors, an immensely wonderful director, and fantastic technical work. It all comes together to make a truly must see show!" Well there you have it - everyone should buy tickets NOW! There are only three performances and seats for prior productions have sold out quickly. Buy yours today! Tickets, ranging from $10 to $15, are available online at gomccracken.com or at the door.

iQUILT by Amy Noles
A Local's Guide to
S
pring QuiltWeek is nearly upon us on April 26-29. If you aren’t a quilter or love someone who is, you may begin to grumble because there are quilters everywhere that week. But instead of pouting, why not embrace this show that brings in so much revenue to our area. Check out some of the exceptional shows and events. Because guess what- not all of them are just about quilting and many of them are very inexpensive! First of all how about a quick lesson in how Paducah became the heart of all things quilted.
AQS
Paducah native Meredith Schroeder and her husband Bill founded American Quilter’s Society (AQS) in 1984 with the vision of promoting the accomplishments of today’s quilters on a national and international scale. Their goal was to develop a group that “gave national recognition to the quilters and their work” and “to set the standard in the industry.” Approximately 1,500 quilters became charter members in the first year. Today the AQS boasts more than 55,000, with members in every state in the United States and 80 other countries.
Fantastic Fibers
at Yeiser Art Center April 22-June 17 Fantastic Fibers is an international competitive exhibition that showcases a wide range of outstanding works related to the fiber medium – so it’s not just quilts! Previous years have included amazing hand sewn fabric ‘books’ and floor to ceiling fiber sculptures! This event runs before and after Spring QuiltWeek and only costs $5 to attend. For more information, visit YAC’s Facebook page at theyeiser. org/project/fantastic-fibers-2017.
Minimum or Maximum Color
at Jefferson Street Studios April 24-29 Visit this studio for no charge Monday-Saturday from 10am- 6pm of Spring QuiltWeek to learn more about Helene’s Hand-Dyed Fabrics and Robert Wyatt Davis Nerikomi beads.
The American Quilter’s Society held its first quilt show and contest in Paducah in April 1985 with an attendance of 5,000 and offering $10,000 for the Best of Show award. Over the last 30+ years, more than 10,000 of the most beautiful quilts being created today have been displayed in Paducah and over $3 million awarded in cash prizes.
Events for All
“Our community’s celebration of quilting is not confined to QuiltWeek,” Director of Marketing for Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau Laura Oswald told me. “Some of these events run before and/ or after the four days of AQS QuiltWeek.” Starting this year, AQS will present the first Fall AQS QuiltWeek – Paducah in September from the 13-16. Yes, not just one QuiltWeek, but two!
Events at the NQM
Check quiltmuseum.org for a list of a list of events and extended hours during QuiltWeek. For the first time, the Museum will be open for more than 24 hours straight Wednesday morning through Thursday evening. Grab a friend and visit the Museum during the wee hours of the morning if you would like to avoid traffic. Looking to shop while there? There will be a silent and live auction on April 26-28 at the NQM. The silent auction features smaller lots for bidding and fill a $10 bag with your choice of fabric and books.

Antique Loom & Vintage Quilt Exhibit at Lloyd Tilghman House & Civil War Museum April 25-29 History buffs can learn about early quilt making and looms at this venue which highlights Western Kentucky’s role in the War Between the States and part of Kentucky’s Civil War Trail. They will be open from 10am- 4pm. Cost of admission is $5 for adults and $1 for 6-16 year olds.
Artisan & Quilt Expo at Kentucky Oaks Mall April 24-29 Kentucky Oaks Mall invites you to participate in the 2017 Oaks Artisan Festival, where they will showcase the craftsmanship and artistry of quilters, crafters, artisans, and jazz musicians in the area.
Economic Impact of All Those Quilters
Still grumbling about the disruption to traffic, the two hour wait for a restaurant seat, or the lack of parking at the mall or downtown? The arts mean business in Paducah and that’s great for our regional economy. There’s not a hotel room to be had for 75 miles during quilt week. Consider the following: In 2007, Americans for the Arts published Arts & Economic Prosperity III, the most comprehensive study of its kind ever conducted. The key lesson learned was that Paducah’s investment in the arts reaped the additional benefit of jobs, economic growth, and a quality of life that positions Paducah to compete in our 21st century creative economy.
The Oaks Artisan Festival is a perfect complement to the beautiful works on display at Paducah's annual quilt week. A bus is available to shuttle quilt lovers from downtown to Kentucky Oaks Mall. For more information please visit kentuckyoaksmall.com.

The economic impact that this four day event brings to our businesses cannot be denied. In 2016 alone there was a $25 million projected regional impact. With more than 32,000 attendees from 15 countries, last year’s event had the most ever attendees in its history. There will be nearly 400 vendor booths presenting cutting-edge quilting tools and supplies with over 400 contest quilts on display. The 2017 quilt contest garnered entries from 47 U.S. states and 15 foreign countries. This includes quilts from eight of Paducah’s fellow UNESCO Creative Cities on four continents. Over 4,500 quilters will be participating in nearly 100 lectures and workshops. Whew! iSUPPORT
by Sarah Ladd
A
pril is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month as well as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Sexual assault is not a topic we like to dwell on but it is an ugly and very real problem. Unfortunately, one out of every six American women and three percent of American men have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. It is shocking to consider that from 2009-2013, Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that, 63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse. A majority of child victims are 12-17 years of age. Thankfully, we have safe local programs that are available for victims of sexual assault and proactive in their efforts to decrease the statistics.
PASAC
One of these programs is the Purchase Area Sexual Assault & Child Advocacy Center (PASAC), which has been there for victims of sexually based crimes, providing comfort and services since 1987. They are a non-profit organization and also serve as the regionally statedesignated rape crisis and child advocacy center. PASAC serves the eight Purchase Area counties of Western Kentucky and surrounding areas by providing free and confidential services to all-age survivors of sexual violence and their supportive family members. In addition, PASAC provides prevention education programming to children and adults in the community as well as specialized training to community partners. Training that teaches both children and adults how to recognize clearly, step in, and prevent abuse from happening around them. Their goal is to reduce the occurrence of sexual violence and to assist people of all ages who have been through it through the healing process, both long and short term. Lately, PASAC has seen a 50% increase in the need for their services.
Delicious Dishes, Local Chefs
Men Who Cook is largest annual fundraising event for PASAC and helps raise money for the center and programs that help victims of sexual crime. This is the event’s 12th consecutive year. Each year has a special theme which this year will be the organization’s tagline: Hope. Heal. Grow. The event brings in familiar local “chefs” to create delicious dishes and includes both amateur and professional teams. These well-known local individuals/celebrity chefs may be politicians, doctors, businessmen, or TV/radio hosts.

Men Who Cook is being held on April 15, from 6-10pm at the Julian Carroll Convention Center in Paducah. The event’s signature sponsor is Mercy Medical Associates. Their Grow sponsors are Premier Portable Buildings and Wagner Wine and Spirits. Individuals may donate online to a chef team at give.classy.org/menwhocook2017. Guests are asked to dress casual classy. Tickets are $50 and are available at hopehealgrow.org or at the door the night of the event. The proceeds will be going to fight sexual crimes and to heal survivors of them. Money well spent! For more information, call PASAC at 270.534.4422.
During the evening, more than 300 guests will sample gourmet appetizers and vote for their favorite chef who will win the coveted Taster’s Choice award. The final award of the night is the Make a Difference award. It goes to the chef’s team that raises the most money for PASAC via the chef team fundraising efforts.
Going Once, Going Twice
What’s a grand event without an amazing live auction? The silent auction will include a large Love String art piece by Cheryl Waldo, UK lower level seats, game of choice next season-courtesy of Will & Nikki Coursey, and a metalwork piece by local artist. It will also feature the event’s signature hand painted children's chairs for sale. An Easter Memor y
W
hile pondering my topic for the April edition, I was looking at the calendar and noticed that Easter is the day before the income tax filing deadline. Well we’d better make the most of Easter Day which is a joyous time of year. Easter is always filled with new life and vibrant colors.
I don’t remember much about our Easter dinners but I remember the breakfasts. It’s not often you get to sit down with 10 to 20 friends and share pancakes, ham, sausage and chocolate milk (remember I was a kid). Everybody would pitch in because we knew we didn’t have a lot of time and we were all ravenously hungry.
Easter Memories
Being a kid did have its advantages. After we helped set the table, our duty was done and we were free to play – as long as we stayed out of the kitchen where the real work was happening. Mom and Dad were busy cooking or transferring food to the table, and entertaining guests. Everyone had plenty to eat and, as far as I recall, it was a great gathering. I miss those times.
Some of my best memories of Easter are from my childhood. My family generally attended sunrise services at church on Easter morning and our regular service at 11am leaving us just enough time to gather at someone’s home for fellowship and a huge breakfast - you knew I would get to food somehow, didn’t you!

Time for Brunch
Nowadays, Easter breakfast has usually become Easter Brunch. You may go to an early service then head out to your favorite eatery for pancakes, an omelet, and possibly a mimosa. Generally, there is a line and heaven help you if you didn’t make reservations. Brunch is meant to be relaxing, and having waited for the table, people take their time. The last time I hosted brunch was for some members of the women’s cross country team from Murray State. A family friend’s daughter was attending school there from England and I wanted to make the ladies feel at home. I prepared a frittata, citrus fruit salad, bacon, sausage and waffles. (I have a professional waffle iron and can crank one out every couple of minutes). That was a good morning!
Brunch at Home
I’ve had brunch on many special occasions and some not so special ones. Why not put together your own Easter brunch and have some friends or family over to celebrate this holy day? It’s not that hard. With a bit of planning and a little help from your friends, you too can host a lovely Easter meal. Brunch is one of the easiest meals to prepare in my opinion. The difficulty lies in the dishes you prepare and if you are making things to order. Personally, I don’t mind cooking eggs to order for up to four people but if I’m trying to feed more than that we are having a big plate of scrambled eggs, or better yet, a breakfast casserole or frittata. Make it easy on yourself but have a variety because not everyone wants the same thing. If you are hosting a breakfast or brunch with children, try making a large plate of pancakes with sausage links or a variety of cereals. Have plenty of juices, milk, and fresh fruit on hand. Don’t forget the baked goods, which can be prepared ahead of time, like muffins or cinnamon rolls. These are almost always a crowd pleaser. For the adults, your menu can be a bit more complex like a frittata or eggs Benedict. You may want to include some adult beverages like mimosas (champagne and orange juice) or Bloody Mary’s (recipes vary). If you are expecting some teetotalers, brew a pot of fresh, rich coffee and make sure you have proper cream for it, or offer up an assortment of teas. I hope you take the time to host a brunch this holiday. Live, Laugh, Love and Eat Well.

Breakfast Casserole Courtesy of Paula Deen Serves 8 to 10
Cooking spray 1 LB ground maple pork sausage 6 slices soft hearty white bread 1 8oz package shredded cheddar cheese 8 large eggs 2 cups whole milk 1 tsp dry mustard ¼ tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 13x9-inch baking dish with cooking spray. In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, stirring frequently, until browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes; drain well on paper towels. Set aside. Cut and discard the crusts from the bread. Cut the slices in half and arrange in a single layer on the bottom of the baking dish, cutting pieces to fit as necessary. Sprinkle the sausage and cheese on the bread. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard, salt and pepper. Then carefully pour the mixture over the cheese and sausage. Bake the casserole until set and golden brown, about 40 minutes. Let stand about 10 minutes before serving.

Add the egg mixture and feta to the skillet and stir to combine. Sprinkle the remaining 2 TBSP of breadcrumbs on top and transfer the skillet to the oven. Bake until the frittata is set and the top is golden; about 15 to 20 minutes. While the frittata is cooking, peel the skin off the roasted pepper with your fingers. Cut the pepper in half, discard the seeds and slice into strips. Toss with the remaining olive oil, salt and pepper to taste in a small bowl. Slide the frittata onto a serving plate and cut into wedges. Serve with the roasted red pepper.

ow far do you walk for water? I can get up from my couch and walk to the sink, where I have plenty of clean water available, but this is not the case for many people throughout the world. Drought, war, poverty and disease can all affect whether a family has water to keep them alive.
The event is not a race, so everyone can participate. Along the way, volunteers will have water jugs similar to those used in developing nations. Walkers can carry these jugs to see what it feels like to haul water. HHI representatives will also show how the portable filtration systems work by turning a bucket of river water into safe drinking water.
Free water might not seem like a big deal for us living in the US but imagine walking 4, 8, or sometimes 13 miles for clean drinking water! That means someone has to spend hours every day getting water – and that water may not be clean or safe. This task is usually left to the women and children of the community taking the children out of school. It generates a downward spiral leading to a lack of education and increased poverty.
The three-mile route will start at the Wilson stage and head north along the river, walkers will stay on the river-side of the flood wall though the Riverfront Development Project, continue past the Paducah Expo Center, onto the Greenway Trail, down Burnett Street, and turn around at the boat ramp. There will be several water stations along the way and medical staff on golf carts.
And, collecting water isn’t just keeping children out of school: it is killing them. On average, a child dies every 21 seconds from water-related illnesses. More children die every day from dirty water than from malaria, aids, and measles combined.
Healing Hands International
According to non-profit organization Healing Hands International (HHI), approximately 780 million people worldwide don’t have access to clean drinking water. In one day, 6,000 people will die because of a lack of access to clean drinking water, and 90% of those 6,000 are children. HHI has made a difference for over one million people since 2001. Working in developing nations they provide disaster relief and medical aid. They train teachers and instruct on life skills such as sustainable farming. One of HHI’s main goals is to drill wells to provide safe drinking water, and that is one area where they need your help!
Last year, this event raised over $30,000 bringing the total raised to date to $70,000. This year, their goal is $50,000.
Working As A Team
“Paducah and Walk4Water make a great team,” said Broadway Church of Christ Youth Minister Jason Whitley. “Both got their start because of the water and rely on water as their life blood. With the help of the community, the Broadway church, and Healing Hands International, we have dug three freshwater drinking wells for villages in India. The
"We Walk So They Don't Have To!"
This is the motto for this four-mile fundraising walk – Walk4Water. In 2007, HHI began organizing these walks across the U.S. The goal of the walk it to raise awareness and funds that will help to bring clean water to those who must walk for water every day. Since 2001, HHI has drilled over 600 wells around the world. You can help HHI bring clean water to these communities by participating in Paducah’s Walk4Water.

Biking Around the Purchase Area
T
rees are blooming, the birds are making nests and the sun is shining! For many, spring is a perfect time to get back in touch with nature through outlets like running, hiking, fishing, and biking. Biking is especially fun because it combines so many things that we all enjoy - outdoor scenery, exercise, fresh air and sunshine. Thankfully, we live in a nature-rich area that has many opportunities for biking. We’ve put together some great biking spots in the Purchase Area where you and your family can enjoy all that Spring has to offer.
Railroad route. After the rails were removed, the route was converted to a bike trail. It is a nice Asphalt trail that is relatively easy in difficulty. It is one of the trails supported by the “Rails to Trails Conservancy” which is a non-profit organization that is working to form a system of trails nationwide from previous rail lines.
The Tunnel Hill Trail
The Tunnel Hill Trail is a rail trail just like Cadiz - It was once a railway and now the rails have been removed and the surface refurbished. Much
Family Rides The Paducah Greenway Trail
The Greenway Trail is a five mile stretch that can be accessed through Stuart Nelson Park and Nobel Park in Paducah. It is concrete and has easily seen mile markers throughout. Its route follows the north side of Paducah and is on top of the flood berm. This trail is a nice way to see downtown Paducah while not facing the dangers of riding on the street. The trail is very wide and easily accessible. Bathrooms are located inside Noble Park at the head of the trail – so ‘potty’ before you ride the 10 miles round-trip.
Natural Arch Trail
The Natural Arch Trail is in Whitley City, Kentucky. It is a child friendly trail with “easy” difficulty. It is 5.9 miles long, has rich birding opportunities, and has a scenic variety of wild flowers. It also has beautiful streams for a refreshing break or family picnic.
Cadiz Railroad Trail
Located in Cadiz, Kentucky the Cadiz Railroad Trail about 50 miles from Paducah. It is two and a half miles long and was once called the Cadiz

of Tunnel Hill is gravel. Located in southern Illinois, only 22 miles from Paducah. This is a great opportunity for families because of the exciting tunnels it offers - for several seconds, you are left to ride in the dark before making it to the other side. Your kids will enjoy this! To get to there, via Vienna, Illinois: From I-24, take exit 16; go west about half mile. The park is on the left. The trail stretches for 45 miles from Harrisburg to Karnak, but bikers can ride segments of it. There is a trail spur for 2.5 miles from Karnak to Cache River State Natural Area and a 9.3-mile section between Tunnel Hill and Vienna – that’s one direction, so figure 18 miles round-trip. There is never more than a two percent grade. This trail is a wonderful experience with many lovely scenery options. It goes over bridges and has spectacular views. Almost to the tunnel is a little shop where you can get water, sodas snacks and
ice cream - and even replacement inner tubes! (They only take cash.) But you don’t have to do the whole 9 miles and this is a great ride for families.
Lake Glendale Trail
Lake Glendale Trail is located in Golconda, Illinois. It is a moderate level of difficulty, is only 2.5 miles long, and very scenic. It has a variety of wildlife, canoeing opportunities, and camping spots. Dogs on a leash are welcome on the trail, so it is perfect for a family outing!
Hopkinsville Rail Trail
Hopkinsville Rail Trail is located in Christian County. It is 3.1 miles of concrete. It is sometimes referred to as Pennyrile Rail Trail and is in the process of being extended to 7 miles. This new trail will run adjunct to the Fort Campbell railroad spur that the United States Army once used. The current 3 mile stretch is from North Drive and Pardue Lane in Hopkinsville.

Riders can easily get off the trail and visit local businesses and neighborhoods simply by crossing a 130 foot bridge that stretches over the “Little River”. The Pennyrile Rail Trail Foundation has been making upgrades to the trail for over 20 years. The trail’s first chapter opened in September of 2014. Future phases will continue the trail farther south to Tie Breaker Park (on Eagle Way) and Lovers Lane.
LBL
Land Between the Lakes has a beautiful array of camping sites, fishing and swimming opportunities, and plenty of bike trails. The Canal Loop trail is a favorite but it is a moderate to difficult ride, especially in wet weather. Mountain bikes are recommended. It is an 11 mile dirt trail but has connectors that allow bikers to choose trails which vary in length from 1.5 miles to 11. It’s scenic and has some hills, making for a moderately difficult trail. Canal Loop has a variety of flowers and wildlife. LBL is also home to the Hillman Ferry Heritage National Recreation Trail. This dirt trail is 5.5 miles long and follows historic routes that date back to pre-Civil War roads. Pets on a leash are allowed.

urray State Athletics and Special Olympics Kentucky (SOKY) are joining together again this year for a free All Sports Day clinic for individuals with disabilities. Join them from 2-4pm on Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Murray State’s Roy Stewart Stadium.
Come & Play With The Racers
SOKY offers training and competition in 16 Olympic style sports. This MSU & SOKY All Sports Day is designed to introduce individuals with disabilities to a variety of sports under the instruction of MSU athletes and coaches. They’ll be playing basketball, tennis, football, soccer, volleyball, track & field, and rifle. Participants can try various sports, learn more about SOKY events and register to win door prizes and giveaways. Participating MSU sports teams will have stations set up around the track/football field. Special Olympic athletes and prospective athletes can rotate through each station and find out more about the sport. Last year approximately 30 individuals participated and organizers are hoping for a bigger turn out this year.

Olympics to do an All Sports Day as a way to introduce the Special Olympics athletes to new sports. Short approached the SAAC who were excited to help. Members organized the activities for their stations ran each station. The experience was rewarding for the MSU athletes as well as the Special Olympics athletes. "The student-athletes had only positive things to say about this event,” Short told me. “They really enjoyed meeting and interacting with the athletes." Miller encourages any individual with disabilities, who is 8-years or older, to attend this event. “This is not only for current Special Olympics athletes,” she reminded me. “But rather for current athletes and hopefully new individuals interested in learning more about our programs...and meeting some awesome Racer athletes!” For more information, contact Laura Miller, SOKY West Regional Director at 270.293.9054 or lmiller@soky.org.
Special Olympics
Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organizations was founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. These sports should be adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special mental and physical limitations. Special Olympics believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit in many ways. Sports training helps strengthen families and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united with people with intellectual disabilities. Autism Isn't Black and White Gala Editor’s Note: When my son was born in 1980 Autism wasn’t really a diagnosis. Consequently, he was labeled as having Cerebral Palsy. But that just doesn’t really describe John, who has a high IQ yet didn’t speak until he was almost 4. Eye contact is not his strong suite and he is very sensitive to loud noises, and angry words. A few years ago he self-identified as having ASD. Which means that I am a Mom for whom autism isn’t black and white. My son is 37 this April and he lives a full and engaged life. But he got there because I had help from friends, great therapists and supportive educators. We can’t do it alone and I urge you to support Families on the Spectrum.
Autism Awareness
D
id you know that one in every 110 people suffer from autism – that’s almost four million Americans. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. People with ASD don’t look different and they don’t have any physical disabilities associated with the disorder. However, they often communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives. A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately, they are now all called autism spectrum disorder. The spectrum includes autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome.
Families On The Spectrum
We’re fortunate to have a nonprofit organization in the area that help and supports families of those with a diagnosis of ASD. Families on the Spectrum is a nonprofit organization based in Paducah that seeks to bring awareness of autism to others, and to unite autism families together to form successfully communities and support systems. They serve a 50-mile radius around the Paducah area. The organization has quarterly meetings every year that serve as support groups for parents. It is crucial for families going through an autism diagnosis to know that other parents are going through this and to be able to share with others how they are feeling. In addition to the quarterly meetings, Families on the Spectrum hosts many events that are autism friendly. Children with autism are sometimes uncomfortable with large crowds and busy

areas. This organization helps by holding small parties and outings in environments where the kids can have fun with their friends. Some of the places where Families on the Spectrum hold fun gatherings include Vertical Jump, Venture River Water Park and Calvert City Country Club pool. They get together for Easter Egg hunts, fall bashes, breakfast with Santa at Christmas time, and other small group activities like pizza, movie, and paint get-togethers. These parties and field trips provide a fun support system for these families. Both the parents and the children form long-term bonds and relationships with others who know exactly what they are going through.
Paying It Forward
I spoke with Natalie Armstrong, the Board Chair for Families on the Spectrum. Like the other members on board of directors, she is a volunteer mother. “The most satisfying part of my work is paying it forward,” Armstrong told me. “Meeting families facing a new autism diagnosis and being able to help them. That could mean guiding them toward therapists and agencies that could really help their children thrive. Or it could mean just being someone who is there for them and knows how they’re feeling.” “What meant the most to me in the beginning of our journey was meeting other moms who knew exactly what I was talking about or

going through,” explained Armstrong. “They made me feel less alone in all of this. That is the reason I do what I do, and why our board works so hard for our organization. We want these kids to thrive and be accepted. We want families to know they have us for support.”
Autism Isn't Black & White
Families on the Spectrum is gearing up to host its fourth annual fundraiser, “Autism Isn’t Black and White Gala”. The Gala seeks to raise money in support of the work that Families on the Spectrum does throughout the year. The gala will feature a fully catered meal by Walker Hall, a silent auction, music, dancing, and a cash bar. The
menu for the meal is available when purchasing tickets. The silent auction this year will include items such as an 8-hour pontoon rental, a Vertical Jump party, St. Louis Cardinals tickets, a Coca Cola gift basket, and a DJ package. Majestic Sounds will be the deejay for the night, serenading guests through the festivities.
Best Dressed Oscar
Every year, the gala goes by a particular theme. This is an exciting part of the gala. Guests are asked to dress semi-formal and according to the theme. Previous themes included the Great Gasby and the roaring 20’s. The theme this year is “Old Hollywood.” There will be the traditional photo booth modeled after the theme. Get creative! Who are some of your favorite 20’s actors? Look into the style of that decade and have fun coming up with a great outfit for the evening.
Get Your Tickets!
The Gala will be held at Walker Hall Events Center, located at 229 Madison Street in Paducah. It will be on Saturday, April 15, from 7pm - 11pm. To purchase tickets, please visit familiesonthespectrumky.org. Tickets are on available for $40 per an individual, or $75 for a couple. There are only 250 seats available and some of these seats will be reserved for corporate sponsors, so guests are encouraged to book now! If you have a family member who has Autism or has been diagnosed with ASD, Families on the Spectrum, would like to hear from you. Please visit familiesonthespectrumky.org.

Move Big & Speak Loud! Therapy for Parkinson's Disease
M
ore than 500,000 Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease, according to the National Institutes of Health. Those affected know all too well the challenges that come with facing such a complex disease. Parkinson’s occurs when there is a decline in the production of dopamine in the body. The lack of dopamine can cause movement, voice and mood disorders. Diagnosis isn’t as easy as taking a blood sample. The doctor will observe the patient and ask them to perform some simple tasks and movements in the office. Diagnosis is reached by patient history and observation.
Successful Therapy Programs
There are also some physical, occupational and speech therapy programs that have been proven to make a significant difference. Getting therapy as early as possible is important because it slows the progression of the disease. One of the most successful therapy regimes is the world renowned Lee Silverman LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD™ program. Using all three therapy disciplines and standardized
Know the Signs & Symptoms
There are signs to look for when wondering if Parkinson’s disease is present. No single sign should be alarming but when several are apparent, a visit to the doctor is recommended. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the inability to speak clearly, softening of the voice and fewer facial expressions are among the most common symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Some other notable symptoms include a tremor or shaking when relaxed and trouble moving or walking. Additional symptoms include small handwriting, loss of smell, trouble sleeping, constipation, a masked face and stooping over or hunching. Perhaps one of the issues that Parkinson’s patients find most distressing is the impact the disease has on communication. Communication is an essential part of how we interact with others and meet our needs. The inability to speak presents many challenges; whether it's spending precious moments with loved ones or needing help in the midst of an emergency. There isn’t a cure for Parkinson’s. However, there are some scientifically proven methods to slow the decline of dopamine and increase the quality of life of those afflicted. A visit to a neurologist can help someone if they have been diagnosed or need to see if they think they might have it. There are some drugs on the market that can help. The doctor will need to see what works best for your body and level of need.

treatment protocols, this type of therapy retrains the brain to take larger motions and make louder stronger voice sounds. Outcomes show that 90 percent of patients improve vocal loudness following treatment with a majority maintaining improvement for 12 to 24 months after treatment. Patients also have also shown dramatic improvements in balance and speed of movement in walking and daily living tasks. This type of therapy can work with other movement and neural disorders as well, but it was designed specifically for Parkinson’s patients.
LSVT Big and Loud is an intense program that includes physical and/ or speech therapy over a period of four weeks. LSVT Big and Loud is especially effective soon after the disease is diagnosed and can help people with other conditions too, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, multiple systems atrophy, cerebral palsy, and even Down syndrome.
LSVT Big
The LSVT BIG™ program focuses on the core movements found in everyday activities to increase “bigness” in body movements, improve limb movement speed and assist with balance. Physical therapists or occupational therapists use LSVT Big to address the unique movement impairments for people with Parkinson's disease. Therapists work with individuals to improve major motor skills, like walking, arm and leg movement, balance, and hand skills such as writing.
LSVT Loud A Modern Approach
Fortunately there are new ways to increase normal function of those with Parkinson’s. It’s an age-old disease but can be addressed with a modern approach. If you or a loved one is faced with this challenge, early intervention is ideal. Find a local therapist who is certified to address the speech impairments and motor issues associated with Parkinson’s and uses the Lee Silverman LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD™ program. Many therapists are now certified in this program at Parkview Nursing & Rehabilitation in Paducah.

LSVT LOUD™ is an effective therapy designed to address speech, facial and swallowing dysfunction by enhancing vocal volume without strain, improving articulation and restoring sensory awareness. Speech-language pathologists improve vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box (larynx) and speech mechanism through a series of loud exercises. Therapy does not train people to shout or yell – rather it trains a healthy louder voice with no strain. Living with Parkinson's David, Cassie & Cody Johnson
Editor’s Note: April Is Parkinson’s Awareness Month – a good time to talk about Parkinson’s disease, its symptoms and treatment options. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. Nearly one million people in the US are living with Parkinson's disease. The cause is unknown, and although there is presently no cure, there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage its symptoms. Chances are you may know someone who has this disease: Muhammad Ali, Johnny Cash, Billy Graham and actor Michael J. Fox, all suffer, or suffered from, PD. One and half years ago, our senior account executive, Cassie Johnson, found out her husband has PD. We are honored to share her family’s story with our readers.
The Prime of Your Life
W
hen you hit the mid-30’s, you’re supposed to be in the prime
of your life. You’re likely established in your career, own your home and life revolves around your kids and family. That was exactly where my husband, David, and I were. However, in the summer of 2014, big changes were headed our way. My husband, who was 34 years old at the time, had developed a series of health issues. He was constantly tired, had zero energy, and his left hand began to shake. We blamed stress and lack of sleep for the fatigue, but what about the tremor in his hand? We saw an orthopedic doctor who ordered a series of tests. We found out that David had a pinched nerve in his elbow - like carpal tunnel in the elbow rather than in the wrist. Surgery was scheduled for September, the pinched nerve was released, and we expected him to fully recover.
seemed as if his body wouldn’t work the way it was supposed to. He was growing more rigid and stiff. You could see that movement was difficult for him. We were both terrified, but we turned our worries to God. We knew He had a plan, but at the time we wanted to know what that plan was! Each day, I prayed for God to give us something treatable, not terminal. I knew we were facing something serious, and I did not want David to be taken away from our family.
Fast forward a few months and into 2015. We knew that David would have some weakness in his hand from the surgery, but we expected that to subside within a couple of months. When the shaking in his hand became worse rather than better, we knew something was wrong. We saw the surgeon again after the New Year and hoped he would have a resolution. Instead, he was as puzzled as we were. This was not a postoperative complication as we thought. The surgeon said we needed to see a neurologist to have David checked for nerve damage.
What's Going On?
David is left handed, and his left hand shaking all the time was becoming more than an annoyance for him. In addition to the tremor and fatigue, friends and family were noticing that David wasn’t quite himself. I could see when I looked at him that something was wrong. His face was a blank stare. He worked full time, but when he came home he was beyond exhausted. He went from being an active dad to our son, Cody, to someone who fell asleep as soon as he sat down. Our doctor recommended doing a sleep apnea test, but that was negative. What was happening? We waited for an appointment with a neurologist which took several weeks. David’s health drastically went downhill, and fast. He was having trouble doing simple tasks, such as picking up a pen or using a fork. It

He explained that David’s brain did not produce enough of the neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. With PD, the amount of dopamine in the brain decreases. This leaves the person unable to control movements normally. After the doctor explained this, it all became clear! On August 17, 2015, he officially diagnosed David with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. ‘Young Onset’ meaning David was diagnosed at the young age of 35, which is well under the nationwide statistics of 50 years and older. David ranks right up there with Michael J. Fox, who was also diagnosed with PD at a young age. I am very blessed to say that thanks to the amazing physician in St. Louis and The Good Lord, David’s symptoms are, for the most part, under control. Medication has played a key part in his treatment. While we know things can change at any time, we made several lifestyle changes such as more exercise and healthier eating to help David feel his best.
Moving Forward Searching For Answers
From the months of March through August of 2015, we were in and out of doctors’ offices. We searched for answers from Paducah to Hendersonville, Tennessee. With each visit to our neurologist in Hendersonville, she promised to figure out the problem. Diseases like MS, Parkinson's Disease (PD), ALS and other things such as brain tumors, all came into conversations. She ordered a brain SPECT scan; a very detailed scan of David’s brain. With both shock and relief, it revealed that David did have a type of Parkinson’s disease….he was 35 years old.
Answers To Our Prayers
From Hendersonville, we were referred to the Movement Disorder Specialists at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. We were greeted by a doctor who was probably around David’s age. Movement Disorder Specialists are the absolute best when it comes to diseases such as PD, MS, and other neurological based diseases.
Movement is so important with PD to ensure mobility. We walk and ride our bikes very often to keep him going. Each day is different, so we take it one day at a time. He still works full time, he’s an active dad and church member, and enjoys doing the same things he always has such as hunting and fishing. Diseases and diagnoses can happen at any age, but how you handle it determines your life – NOT the disease itself! Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease, meaning there is no cure and symptoms worsen over time. However, there is hope for PD patients. Organizations like the Michael J. Fox Foundation are always contributing to Parkinson’s research. There are so many hopeful and promising studies. We believe a cure will be found in David’s lifetime! For more information on Parkinson’s disease, visit pdf.org, parkinson.org or michaeljfox.org.
If you or a loved one has any of the signs or symptoms of PD, get help today. Treatment and medication can help to improve quality of life. PD is treatable. The Johnson family is a great example of how living a full life with PD is possible.
