espite the heat of the summer, many of our readers are heading back to school and the getting kids ready for the start of after-school activities. Purchase Area Family Magazine is excited to bring you our annual Back-to-School Activities & Enrichment Guide. From dance and theatre, to sports and knitting, there is something for everyone in this pull-out! August 21 is the Solar Eclipse and the area is expecting a flood of visitors from all over the globe! The biggest celebration in Paducah will probably be at WKCTC as they will be holding Night At Noon! Check of our Eclipse party ideas and all the eclipse events in our huge calendar. On a personal note, I want to thank everyone who send their prayers, condolences and concern when my mother passed away July 1. My sister and I miss her very much. At 94 she had led an amazing life and Mum was certainly an inspiration. The poems, stories, and articles she wrote during her lifetime are a testament to her talents and a legacy I shall cherish.

Dreams Come True

Lisa Hill is the owner and principal dance teacher at Center stage Dance Studio. Lisa’s love of dance may have begun as a child but it blossomed during her college years. “When I thought about opening a dance studio, I remembered back to my first dance class,” Hill told me. “I was excited to go to a dance class! That was a very happy and positive time in my life. I want to create that same feeling of happiness, excitement and positive emotion for all my students. I want them to love dance!” Center Stage students have achieved their dreams joining dance teams, professional companies and cast members of Broadway shows. A professional career in the performing arts is not the dream of every Center Stage student – but it can be a possibility for everyone! But perhaps more importantly, Center Stage students have used the skills and discipline they have learned though dance to help them achieve goals in other areas of their lives.

Nurturing Technical Instruction

While most parents want their children to participate in extracurricular activities it can be hard to find the time for children’s sports and dance lessons. Especially if part of the commitment involves a heavy emphasis on the tournaments and competitions. Center Stage offers classes that are welldefined, nurturing and provide good technical instruction. As the children get older and the opportunity for competitive dance enters the picture, parents must decide if they are able to commit the necessary time for their child to participate. “It’s not necessary for every student to be in a competition team,” Hill reiterated. “Most just want their children to enjoy learning to dance. What’s important is that every student knows they are an integral part of the school.”

Making a Difference

Lisa Hill always knew she would dedicate her life to working with children. She thought about becoming a social worker or therapist, but owning Center Stage Dance Studio gives her the best of both worlds; she can teach dance

and make a difference to every child who is part of the Center Stage family. Hill’s main objective for her students is to be taught, nurtured, mentored and happy. At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids – that is where her heart is. “I’m always looking out for the best interest of the child,” said Hill.

Kindness, Harmony & A Positive Self Image

Hill is dedicated to making Center Stage the best school it can possibly be and takes the responsibility of teaching her students very seriously. “I want my students to learn to dance, but more importantly, I want to instill in them the values that I hold dear; hard work, dedication, teamwork, a positive self-image and kindness to others. As a teacher I help to mold young people and I take that responsibility very seriously. We focus on working as a team where everyone is valued.” Hill sees each of her students as individuals. “Every child at Center Stage is treated fairly and given the attention they need. Whether your child sees themselves as a professional dancer or is strictly at class for socialization and to improve their dance skills. Kids need to enjoy themselves and have great memories of their years dancing.” Center Stage is about family – Hill’s family and her dance families. She shared her passion for dance with the two nieces she has raised, and the children she has adopted. She taught them to dance and now they are teaching their children. This is the third generation of teachers in the family. Having her family in the studio is a true blessing, but for Hill, the best gift is when her former students bring their own children back for lessons. Center Stage Studio is truly a multi-generational endeavor.

Structure & Fun

At this time of the year, many dancers and their parents are weighing their options and considering where to take dance instructions. Center Stage has all the professional equipment you would expect from a top notch dance academy including floating floors, floor to ceiling mirrors, ballet barres and a viewing window in the waiting area. Center Stage has a talented and caring staff – the teachers love Center Stage and the core staff have been together for over twenty years. “There’s something special about the teamwork and comradery of the staff,” said Hill.

Affordable Classes

Another priority for Hill is making sure her classes are affordable. “In today’s economy, and as a single parent, I know how hard it is provide children with all the opportunities you want for them. By making my studio the most affordable in town, I hope to encourage families to become involved with dance.” “As a parent, I know what dedication and hard work involves”, said Hill. “By example, I can show them that it pays off.” Being in a dance school creates memories that last a life time and Hill wants those memories to be wonderful. She is committed to creating a legacy for her students and for her family.

In-House Competition Team

Center Stage offers an in house competition team. Any student, five and over, who attends Center Stage can be a part of the team. There are no auditions required. Hill wants every student at Center stage to excel. Competition helps the studio remain current and vital. Student and instructors learn what’s cutting edge in the dance world. The

* competition team helps students take their dance techniques a little bit further then just classes. It’s just like being on a basketball team – competition makes you better and give you something to strive for.

Your Instructors

Center Stage is proud of the quality of its instructors. Although Hill teaches many of her own classes, she is assisted by Assistant Director Kim Dill and Lead Instructor Kristin Tracy. Instructor Ms. Stacy Stahl Brown has 30 plus years of teaching experience in many forms of dance and currently specializes in teaching Ballet and Pointe. She holds a bachelor’s degree in performing arts with an emphasis in dance. Also on staff is Daniel Baine, (from St. Louis, Missouri) who teaches Hip Hop. Joining the staff this year is former student, Megan Gibson who recently graduated from Murray State. Hill also brings in guest instructors from across the country, giving the Center Stage students additional opportunities to learn new skills. Center Stage Dance Studio is located inside Energy Fitness on New Holt Road in Paducah. “It’s a great location for our families and dancers,” Hill explained. “Parents can choose to work out while their child is dancing, or siblings can take a gym or martial arts class from

the schools located in the complex. Child care is also available on site for gym members. If they wish to stay and watch their child’s class we have a private viewing room where parents can watch through a large, one way observation window Center Stage has also reached out to neighboring local communities offering classes at the Mayfield YMCA and in Benton at the Joe Creason Center. This allows families to avoid the drive time to Paducah while still taking advantage of the excellent instruction and instructors available at Center Stage.

t may well be the height of summer but it’s already time for the kids to go back to school! That means after school activities start back up, sports practices are in full swing and Mom and Dad are running around half the evening - who has time to cook! Most families have a lot less time to shop and prepare food during the week. If you’re lucky you have about 45 minutes to get a meal together and eat. What do you prepare? It’s very tempting to eat out or buy fast food when you have a house full of hungry tired people and homework to tackle. This month iCook comes to the rescue with quick and delicious ideas for a home cooked meal. Enroll the kids in helping to prepare these dishes and create some family time at the dinner table.

Plan & Cook Ahead

Planning for the busiest nights can save you a lot of time. This starts with a menu and cooking as much of the common items you will need at one time. Roasting a couple of chickens can provide the protein for two or three meals. Besides roast chicken, you can shred the meat for a casserole, quesadillas, or soup which can all be prepared in 15 to 30 minutes. Spaghetti sauce can be prepared in bulk on the weekend and used throughout the week. The sauce can be served with pasta and meatballs (make them ahead of time,) or the base for Lasagna which keeps well in the refrigerator or freezer for days. Add a green salad or steamed vegetable to any of these for a wellrounded meals.

Quick & Easy Weeknight Meals it first and let it simmer while you are preparing your sides. Enlist the help of family members in cleaning or chopping vegetables allowing you to concentrate on other aspects of the meal. Almost any meat can be cooked quickly and still be flavorful and tender. The trick is how you prep the meat before cooking. Don’t expect to cook an inch-thick pork chop in a few minutes without it being overdone on the outside and nearly raw in the middle. But a thin boneless pork chop can be sautéed in a matter of minutes for a great meal. The same holds true for boneless chicken breasts, especially if you have a meat tenderizer. By butterflying them or tenderizing the breasts to a consistent thickness, they cook evenly and quickly without getting tough. This type of prep is used for dishes like chicken piccata or marsala. Pasta and some rice dishes can be prepared within 30 minutes. Many rustic pasta sauces can be prepared in less time than it takes to boil the pasta. I make a rustic pasta sauce with sausage and cannellini beans and it can be ready in 20 to 30 minutes (see recipe below). Many of these dishes are basically one pot meals but you can always add a small side salad or steamed vegetable. I know your time is at a premium but remember that you have quick and healthy options that can be prepared at home. It’s better for you, cheaper than fast food and you may get to spend some quality time with your family. Live, Laugh, Love and Eat Well.

Crock Pot Cooking

Crock pot cooking is another great way to save time. For example, a beef pot roast or pork shoulder can slow cook all day and be ready when you get home. Both meats can be served as is with a few vegetables or shredded for use in hash, soft tacos or burritos for a fun Mexican theme night. There is an abundance of slower cooker recipes available, whether in specialty cook books or online.

Cooking Fresh

Personally, I prefer to cook from fresh ingredients whenever possible. Cooking from scratch does require some time but you can still prepare a great meal in 30 to 45 minutes - but you have to cook efficiently. If your main dish must cook the longest, start

beef roast, 3 to 5 LBS (use one with a little fat on it or good marbling) Rutabaga, peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes Turnips, peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes large carrots, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces parsnips, peeled, cored and chopped into 1 inch long pieces large potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces (optional) large Onion, peeled and diced stalks celery, cleaned and chopped into 1 inch pieces cups beef stock

2 cups red wine ¼ tsp crushed red pepper 1 tsp dried thyme 1-1 ½ tsp dried rosemary Salt and pepper to taste 2 TBSP Olive or Vegetable oil Clean and chop all your vegetables. Place the rutabaga, turnip and carrots on the bottom of your crock pot. Place the oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Season the roast with salt and pepper on both sides and sear it for a couple of minutes on all sides to give it some color. Remove the skillet from the heat and place the seared roast into the crock pot. Add the remaining vegetables, beef stock and seasonings. Then add the wine until the ingredients are just covered. If you haven’t covered the ingredients, add some water to increase the volume. Cover the pot and turn the crock pot on high for at least 8 to 9 hours. There is enough liquid volume in the pot that the roast will not dry out. The longer it cooks the more tender the roast will be. Check your seasoning level and add salt or pepper to taste before serving.

When you are ready to eat, pour use some of the juices from the pot over your mashed potatoes (if you didn’t cook them in the crock pot). You can also use the juices to make gravy by preparing a simple roux and adding liquid to reach the consistency that you like. Total Prep and cook time about 40 minutes. Serves 4. Recommended wine pairing with a Pinot Noir or Chianti.

skinless chicken breast halves skinless chicken thighs (I generally just use breasts instead of the thighs) tsp salt tsp fresh black pepper cup olive oil

red bell pepper, sliced yellow bell pepper, sliced oz Prosciutto, chopped cloves garlic, chopped oz can diced tomatoes cup white wine TBSP fresh thyme leaves tsp fresh oregano leaves cup chicken stock TBSP capers cup chopped fresh flat leaf

Season the chicken with ½ tsp each of salt and pepper. In a heavy, large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium heat. When hot, cook the chicken until browned on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside. Keep the pan on medium heat, add the peppers and prosciutto and cook until the peppers have browned and the prosciutto is crisp, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook a minute. Add the tomatoes, wine, and herbs. Using a wooden spoon, scrape up the

brown bits on bottom of pan. Return the chicken to the pan, add the stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until the chicken is cooked through, about 20 to 30 minutes (I generally let this go about 45 to 60 minutes). Just before serving, add the capers and parsley. Stir to combine. You can make the chicken ahead and store overnight. Bring the chicken and sauce back to a simmer and add the capers and parsley just before serving.

9 Years of Pulling 80,000 Pounds The Big Brown Truck Pull for SOKY

he summer months are bursting with fun and community events in downtown Paducah. Live on the River is Paducah’s chance to enjoy continual free activities and live local music. The annual Big Brown Truck Pull is returning this year on August 5th as a part of the 2017 Live on the River. The money raised benefits the athletes from Paducah/McCracken County and throughout the state. For those involved it is more than a fundraising effort, The Big Brown Truck Pull raises awareness about the special needs population in western Kentucky. This will be the 9th annual truck pull for Special Olympics Kentucky (SOKY). Teams of 15, from companies and organizations throughout the area, sign up in advance of the event. On the big day they take their turn and see who can pull a loaded UPS 18-wheeler 12 feet in the shortest amount of time. That’s approximately 80,000 pounds! Younger teams have the option of pulling a UPS panel delivery truck – still heavy but a little easier to get moving.

Be A Team!

Teams are limited to 15 pullers and can be made up of friends, family members or coworkers. Many teams that participate in the Big Brown Truck Pull come from companies and other community organizations, but they could just as easily be any 15 friends or neighbors. Teams raise a minimum of $750 (or about $50 per team member) to compete, youth division teams are to raise a minimum of $300. If you are interested in being

on a team, spread the word with your coworkers, neighbors, family, or friends. This will be a fun and bonding experience, so get the gang together and sign up! “We would LOVE to have more teams sign up,” said Laura Miller, the West Regional Director of Special Olympics Kentucky. “Teams can register as late as the day of the event. However, we do encourage teams to register online prior to the event.” Online registration can be completed at 2017paducahtruckpull.kintera. org. Winners are crowned in men's, women's and co-ed divisions for fastest pull times. There are also younger divisions where

teams of children 12 and under or 13 to 16 pull a UPS panel delivery truck. There are additional prizes for the Top Individual Fundraiser and Top Fundraising Team as well as a team spirit award and an award for the best team Truck Pull T-shirt.

Spreading the Message

“The McCracken Co SOKY delegation is a very active one,” said Miller. “It touches the lives of many athletes and their families. The delegation is hoping to grow and expand and they are always looking for new athletes, coaches and volunteers. Events like the Truck Pull are a wonderful opportunity for us to spread the message of Special Olympics and to bring awareness to our local athletes, their accomplishments, and their needs.” Laura is hoping to increase the event’s participation and funds. “Last year's event raised a little over $25,000,” she told me. “This year, we hope to raise at least $30,000.”

“The Truck Pull allows our athletes to join with our community and raise funds that are needed throughout the year. The money raised helps our athletes with all the sporting events they participate in such as basketball, cheer leading, bowling, track and field, and softball. Funds raised helps with event expenses, uniforms, travel, and more.” “The most important thing about Special Olympics athletes is they get to be with their peers and compete at 100% of their abilities - no matter what. My son has grown so much and made so many friends all over Kentucky. If we didn't have our community behind us none of these things can happen for our McCracken County Special Olympics athletes!"

LIVE On The River

It's A Family!

On site check in will be from 3-6pm. The Big Brown Truck Pull will get underway with the first pull at 6:30pm and the event will wrap up around 9pm. Live music provided by the Murr-Vegas All Stars starts at 4pm on the Wilson Stage. Even if you aren't pulling it is a great evening to come out and enjoy the exciting competition. Venders will be available on Water Street to sell food from 4-8:30pm.

“As the new local coordinator, a coach, volunteer, and mother of a Special Olympics athlete, I truly understand the importance of the Paducah Big Brown Truck Pull event in our community,” she told me.

Since 1970, Special Olympics Kentucky has helped people with intellectual disabilities build confidence, increase positive self-image, and develop physical fitness with its year-round program of sports training and competition. In addition to experiencing the joy of sports, through Special Olympics competition athletes learn teamwork, how to work with a coach, how to handle adversity and success and how to work to improve their skills - all life skills that they take with them off the field, court or track and into their schools and their jobs. Special Olympics Kentucky currently offers training and competition in 15 sports statewide that lead to 10 State Level events, including the State Summer Games, which draw more than 1,300 athletes to Richmond, each year. Currently Special Olympics Kentucky serves more than 6,600 athletes and their families throughout the state of Kentucky.

Is Your Family at Risk for Opioid Addiction?

f you have ever had surgery, broken a bone, or even had a C-section you were probably given an opioid pain medication. Chances are you didn’t take very many or take them for very long – which is probably a good thing. Opioid drugs can be highly addictive and overdosing is often fatal so it’s not surprising most are designated as controlled substances. The number of people prescribed opioids has risen dramatically in recent years. The over-prescribing of opioid medications and availability of inexpensive illicit heroin has been blamed on the epidemic addiction rates that we now see in many parts of the US. In 2011, an estimated 4 million people in this country used opioids recreationally or were dependent on them. In 2013, that number has risen to between 28 and 38 million people, 0.6% to 0.8% of the population between the ages of 15 and 65.

What Are You Addicted To?

Most Americans are addicted to something – working out, school, eating, alcohol, running, smoking, and/or controlled substances. Addiction drives people to using or abusing a thing in excess and that causes physical, social, and psychological damage. An obsession with anything, no matter how seemingly safe, can result in addiction and damage. Opioids are designated controlled substances because if you’re addicted to them you have a much greater possibility of dying from an overdose. Opioid addiction and death is a serious problem for western Kentucky. In 2015, Kentucky ranked number three on a list of states most prone to drug overdose. “Opioid addiction has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. and particularly in Kentucky,” said J. Patrick Kerr, Public Affairs Director for Four Rivers Behavioral Health. “Between 2015 and 2016, the number of deaths attributed to overdoses in this area has nearly doubled, with opioids indicated as the primary toxin in nearly all of the overdose fatalities.”

Close to Home

According to Kerr one of the root causes of the problem is just how easy it is to obtain the medications. Maybe someone in your home broke their leg or had their wisdom teeth removed. These powerful painkillers exist to relieve pain. The problem comes when people (teens especially) take these types of medicine not for pain but for fun – for the feeling of euphoria and contentment that comes with taking these prescriptions. “The use of opioids amongst teens is an especially difficult problem to tackle,” said Kerr. “Most are introduced to opioids as prescription pain killers and, after all, it’s just a pill. Pills comes from doctors so, “it’s not like they’re dangerous.” And, that’s true. There are many instances when a doctor prescribes an opioid painkiller like OxyContin or Vicodin because it is truly needed. The fact that these drugs are so easily available makes it even harder to convince youth that they are dangerous. It is likely, that right now, at least half of the students in any given school system could go home, open their parents or grandparent’s medicine cabinet and find some of these pills!”

Opioids Have Legitimate Uses .

Opioid medications are made with either the Opium Poppy or are synthetic. Opioids come in various forms, and not all are illegal. For example, Codeine, OxyContin™, Fentanyl, Percocet™, Vicodin™ are legal and can be used in a constructive way. One opioid that is illegal is heroin and it can be very harmful.

Thus, effective treatment must include physiological (i.e., medical) and psychological (i.e., behavioral) components.”

One Book Read - The Age Of Miracles March 13 -14, 2018 2017-18 marks the 10th anniversary of WKCTC's One Book Read! This year's Read features Karen Thompson Walker, New York Times bestselling author of The Age of Miracles. As a culmination to the One Book Read, Walker will visit the Clemens Center on March 13 and 14 to discuss her book with WKCTC students, faculty, staff and community members. This year’s One Book Read is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kentucky Arts Council. Get Ready in Red September 9th

looding, house fires, tornadoes, and crippling ice storms can change our landscape and leave our families vulnerable in an instant. September is National Preparedness Month and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Red Cross in our community, the local chapter wanted to reach out and offer tools to get ready for future disasters in a convenient and easy way. Everyone in western Kentucky should make sure they mark their calendars and attend a free Community Disaster Preparedness Fair, Ready in Red. It’s hosted by the Western Kentucky Chapter of the Red Cross and will take place on September 9th from 10am to 2pm. The event will be held at the grounds of the new Holiday Inn Paducah Riverfront Hotel with a beautiful view overlooking the Ohio River.

Free Starter Kit

Families across our region will be able to take part in activities designed to prepare individuals in the event of a home or community disaster. The first 200 families will be given their own free starter disaster preparedness kit when they attend. Throughout the event there will be displays and demonstrations from area response agencies such as the Paducah National Weather Service, McCracken County Emergency Management, Paducah Fire Department and others. There will be activities for kids to take part in and become prepared family members. Jason Lindsey, science educator with Hooked on Science will be there to provide experiments and fun learning moments.

Get a Kit - Have Supplies Ready

Make a Plan - Communicate with Your Family

As part of your family communications plan, each person should know how to reach family members even if the phone system is not operating. That should include an out-of-area contact and where to meet if they can’t go home.

Be Informed - Know First Aid & CPR

Every family should know what resources are available to them and

the types of disasters most likely to occur where they live, work and play. It is also highly recommended that older children and adult family members take first aid and CPR courses - a vital component of disaster preparedness.

Be Aware of Impending Severe Weather

You should know what your risks are and prepare to protect yourself, your family, and community. Recognize an impending hazard and know what to do to protect yourself and your family. Taking effective steps to prepare beforehand will aid recovery after the event. Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected are the same for all types of hazards. However each emergency is unique. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to know the actions to take for each threat as this will impact the specific decisions and preparations you make. By learning about these specific threats, you are preparing yourself to react in an emergency.

Funds for Affordable Housing to Alleviate Poverty

here are families living in our local communities that are extremely poor - they do not have enough money to pay rent, buy food, or even keep themselves warm. Unless we have experienced financial hardship ourselves, or know someone

According to the 2015 US Census, 23.9% of households in Paducah live in poverty. In the U.S. poverty is determined by income, amount of family members, and the members’ ages. A four-member family in the US has to make more than $24,008 a year to be considered above the poverty level.

The Paducah-McCracken County Habitat for Humanity is a participating nonprofit organization in the Community Foundation of West Kentucky Fred Paxton Challenge for Charities which runs through August 31st, 2017. This is an exciting time to donate because the Community Foundation of West Kentucky will match donations raised by each organization up to $10,000, until $100,000 is given away. Donations must be accompanied by the Donor Form and checks must be payable to Community Foundation of West Kentucky. One of the most fundamental issues which the extremely poor face on a daily basis is housing insecurity. To give us a real life perspective the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says that a family where the only bread winner earns the minimum wage, cannot afford the normal local rent for a two-bedroom apartment anywhere in the United States.

Paducah's Habitat

Experts report that extremely poor families who are given their own home are far more likely to raise themselves out of poverty. It is from this construct that the charity Habitat For Humanity was born. Paducah-McCracken County Habitat for Humanity was the first Habitat affiliate in Kentucky, and the seventh affiliate in the United States. Brenda Langlois is the Executive Director of the Paducah-McCracken County Habitat for Humanity. “We have provided 71 affordable homes for families since our beginning in May 1980,” Langlois told me. “The first Habitat house in Paducah was completed in October 1981 and occupied by the family in November 1981. All our funds are raised locally.”

Paducah-McCracken Habitat has an open-door policy. Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion.

Why Habitat Is Important

While the vast majority of Americans feel stable and secure in their current situation, housing insecurity touches nearly half of adults at some point in their lives. A majority of Americans believe that it is challenging to find affordable quality housing in their communities. And more than half of all adults say they have made at least one tradeoff in order to cover their rent or mortgage. Such trade-offs may include taking second jobs, cutting back on health care and healthy food, and moving to less safe neighborhoods.

Live in McCracken County for 1 year and be homeless, live in an overcrowded place or live in a substandard home.

When Habitat families move from poverty housing into their own homes, they report better health, increased stability in the family, and children who do better in school. There is well-documented improvement in civic involvement that accompanies movement from rental to ownership. This is good for everyone in the community. Habitat believes that new and improved homes are tied to better opportunities for families. Children have quiet places to study. Families no longer face illnesses and disease brought on by unhealthy, or unsafe housing. Parents experience the financial freedom that comes from having an affordable place to live.

Habitat for Humanity is not a free charity. Houses are sold to Homeowner Partners without profit, using zero interest on 20 year mortgages. Homeowners make a small down payment and must complete 250 sweat equity hours before they can move into their homes. Sweat equity hours are usually worked on their home and other families' homes, or on another Habitat project.

WKCTC Solar Eclipse Extravaganza

clipse viewers are invited to West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Night at Noon - a party where you will have a front-row seat to the August 21 eclipse. Did you know that Night at Noon is an official NASA viewing site for the eclipse? Bring your lawn chairs, blankets to sit on, and sunscreen – WKCTC will have everything else you need to make this an event to remember!

This will be the first total solar eclipse visible in the continental U.S. in 38 years, and WKCTC will accompany the cosmic event with fun, food, music, free science demonstrations, and a chance to win a free Xbox One. Night at Noon is free and open to the public and is perfect for family viewing - but please remember that the eclipse is not suitable for those little ones under four years of age. Start Now to Build a School Routine

he lazy days of summer are nearing an end and it’s time to prepare your family to get into a good school routine. School resumes (date) in (name of community). The transition will be easier for everyone, students and adults alike, if you start early and ease back into school mode. Please consider the following suggestions to help your family get the school year off to a great start.

Build Good Sleeping Habits.

It’s a good idea to start getting up and going to bed earlier so your children are sleeping on a school-friendly schedule before the first day of school arrives. Children and teens need more, sometimes much more, sleep than adults. According to the National Sleep Foundation, children ages five to twelve need 10-11 hours of sleep every night; older children and teens need to log 9-10 hours of sleep to keep their bodies and brains healthy. Children will typically be both excited and anxious about the first day of school. Adjusting your kids’ sleep and wake times slowly before the school year starts will set them up for a successful first day.

Eat Breakfast

A nutritious breakfast is essential for learning. Think now about what kind of breakfast routine will work best for your family and start building that routine now. If it doesn’t work for your family to sit down for breakfast together, stock your pantry with healthy breakfast choices that can be taken with you to work or school.

Turn Off Technology & Open A Book

If your children haven’t been reading regularly over the summer, encourage reading now. Reading together is a great family activity. Read to your children, listen to

them read, or simply set aside time each evening when everyone reads to themselves. Books are also a great way to start conversations with your children.

Exercise Together

If you have not been exercising with your child, this is a great time to start. Our bodies and brains need movement. Look for activities that everyone in your family can enjoy together and don’t be afraid to try several activities to see what works best.

Choose School Clothes Early

Go through your family’s closets before school starts and donate or discard clothes that no longer fit, have stretched, shrunk, or are otherwise worn out. It may be easier to get your kids to help with this if they know the activity is a prerequisite to back-to-school shopping. Your kids will feel more comfortable and confident if you let them pick out their school clothes within boundaries you set. You may want to check with your neighborhood school to be sure your kids’ choices also meet dress code

Determine Your Family's Transportation Preferences

Don’t wait until the last minute to decide whether your children will ride the school bus, ride with you, participate in a carpool, or drive themselves. Talk with them ahead of time so they know what to expect. While you’re at it, talk about what they should do if an emergency happens while they are at school. Let them know who they can call if you aren’t able to pick them up or meet them at your usual place. Make sure young children know their full name, your name, and your telephone number.

One of the best ways to ease anxiety about the first day of school is to stop by for a visit. This is especially important for families that have

new kindergartners or students who will be transitioning to a new school. Young children aren’t the only ones who benefit. Expanding Creativity & Knowledge through the Arts The 2017-18 Carson Center Class Acts Educational Series

ne of the most fascinating concepts about learning is that it taps into the imaginative mind, taking students beyond the four walls of a classroom. The Class Acts Educational Series at the Carson Center expands the imagination and adds both an educational, and artistic slant to so many of our favorite stories. The Class Acts workshops and performances have been strategically chosen for students of all ages to expand their knowledge and creativity through the arts. “The creative soul is fueled through artistic expression,” says Mary Katz, Education Director at the Carson Center. “When we give children the chance to tap into their own imagination, we observe a developmental aspect of both growth and creativity.”

Imagination will run wild with iLuminate and Shadowland's creative use of light and dance, and just in time for Veteran's Day in November – Letters Home. An Eclipse Party to Remember

re you excited to see the 2017 total solar eclipse? The event, which will take place on August 21, 2017, is going to be one of the most spectacular and widely accessible solar shows of our lifetime. What makes this event such a big deal is that it's the first total solar eclipse to occur within the contiguous United States since February 26, 1979. And unlike the 1979 total eclipse (which was seen only by few people due to its path and the grim weather that day), the 2017 eclipse will stretch across the entire North American continent from the Pacific Coast of Oregon to the Atlantic Coast of South Carolina. Where will you be on August 21, 2017? Hopefully, you are planning to attend the WKCTC Night At Noon event featured in this issue, or you may be throwing or attending your own party! Whichever route you take, here are a few tips and ideas to make the most of your experience.

Eclipse Themed Tunes & Food

Put together an eclipse-themed music playlist. Here's a few to get you started: Moon Shadow by Cat Stevens, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler, Eclipse by Pink Floyd, Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers, Moon Dance by Van Morrison, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, or Yellow Moon by Pearl Jam. No party is actually a party without food and beverages. Think, sundried goodies, Sun Chips, Sun Drop, Blue Moon Beer, Moon Pies; the possibilities are endless!

Themed Activities for Safe Viewing

Prepare a variety of activities for your attendees. You can often find great activities and materials at local clubs, schools, and museums. Eclipse activities often include storytelling and/or arts and crafts. You can even have party-goers help to make their own device to view the eclipse safely. Except during totality, we never look at the Sun. Have your guests get involved by making a pinhole camera. It can be as simple as two pieces of paper with a tiny hole in one of them. (Try to make the hole as round as you can, perhaps with a pin or a sharp pencil.) Line up the two pieces with the Sun so the one with the hole is closest to it. The pinhole will produce a tiny image, which you’ll want to have land on the other piece of paper. Moving the two pieces farther apart will enlarge the Sun’s image but will also lessen its brightness. Work out a good compromise. If you aren’t going to have partygoers make their own, you will want to have special eclipse glasses for viewing any partial eclipses. (Or if you want to go for a more eccentric look, you can also use a welder's mask.) In any case, make sure you have plenty of extras to hand out in case people don't bring their own.

Make It Competitive

Hosting a contest can also be a great way to get people excited about your launch party. You can announce the winners at your party, and offer a small prize as an incentive to people if you so choose. Here are a few potential ideas for contests: Best Decorated Solar Eclipse Viewing Glasses, Best Poem About Eclipse Themes, Best Edible Model Design, or Most Creative Diorama. You can also find lots more recommended activities online at eclipse2017.nasa.gov/planning-your-eclipse-party.

If all else fails, you can always watch a live stream online, though it might take some of the novelty out of the experience. In our social media-obsessed world, you may feel tempted to snap and share some photos during the solar eclipse, but let me dash your hopes here and now by saying you're almost certainly going to regret it. Those two minutes of totality will be over before you know it, so don't waste your time fiddling with the settings on your camera and staring at the event through a viewfinder.

As for decorating your abode, think light and dark. Decorate half your room is yellow, orange, and white, then add all dark tones to the other half. If your party is outdoors, then hang yellow or orange Halloween lights while leaving the other side bare.

Besides, there will be plenty of other professional photographers out there documenting the event with careful precision and years of expertise, so don't fret about not having a visual reminder of the eclipse. And if you happen to be one of those pro photographers who wants to take a stab at capturing it anyway, consider setting up a timer or rigging up a time-lapse so you can enjoy the experience sans electronic devices.

This is why it's so important to check the weather forecast in the days and hours leading up to the event. If it looks like clouds will be dominating your view during the eclipse, try to have a back-up plan â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

Don't Worry If You Won't Be Able To See It This Time Around

For most people, this is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but that doesn't mean you'll never have another opportunity to see a total solar eclipse. And it definitely doesn't mean you can't appreciate this one from afar. There will be live streams of the event available online, and of course, the Internet will be filled with replays and recaps. And if that doesn't make you feel better, then start making your party plans for the country's next total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.
