FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

E

ach year as I write my editorial for the August issue of our magazine I reflect that another summer has passed. The weather is still full of the heat and humidity but our children are beginning a new school, or college, year. I think I feel the passing of time more at this season of the year than on January 1st. It’s probably because when I started a new school year it was a big deal... a new chapter... a fresh beginning.

Back in the dark ages when I went to school the new school year meant new clothes in my case a new school uniform, as many English schools still have a uniform and a dress code. Usually that included a dress made with love by my Mum from the school fabric. (Yes, back then you could buy fabric in an approved pattern to make uniform dresses.) I often had new shoes and a fresh haircut. All of which added to the feeling of change and anticipation on that first day. Each year bought a group of new teachers to get used to; most of whom made it clear that you had entered a new chapter in your life and therefore must behave more maturely than you had the previous year - a mere 6-8 weeks earlier! New books, new subjects to learn, new faces to make friends with. It all led to a heightened sense of anticipation and anxiety. Yes, that sense of excitement, change and time lurching forward seemed to fill our lives each August. I still have a real sense of it as I read about the new job my friend’s recently graduated daughter has taken. Or, chat to my grandson about what subjects he might want to take when he goes to college in a couple of years. Time marches on… just ask the merchandisers who are already putting out Halloween and Christmas decor! With that in mind, our August issue includes out Back to School Enrichment and Activities Guide, page 33. This pullout is a helpful tool that will help you choose what to enroll your kids in this fall. There’s also great articles on engaging kids in the Summer Olympics, as well as creating fun and health lunches! For new and ongoing classes, entertainment and events visit our sister website - iListWesternKentucky.com Last month we gave away Holiday World tickets and a fantastic car seat to some lucky readers. We hope you’ll enter this month’s fun giveaways. Entering takes just a couple of clicks also on iListWesternKentucky.com. Everyone at All Good Media hopes you and your family enjoy the rest of the summer. It’s going to be a wonderful and exciting August as we head back to school!

Center Stage DANCE STUDIO

Where Stars Are Born & Dreams Come True

O

n our cover this month are the beautiful dancers from Center Stage Dance Studio. From left to right in the carriage they are Landyn Bowles (5), Hannah Kathleen Hill (12), Reagan Harrod (5). In front of the carriage from left to right are Rylan Glover (3), Ashlyn Kennedy (6) and Alyssia Brown (14). These six young ladies represent the many dancers who are part of the Center Stage family.

Dreams Come True

The picture represents the Cinderella story in all of us. Dreams really do come true! Former students have triumphed in the world of the performing arts. Kyle McNichols is living his dream performing at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. McKinzie Reese is performing at Kings Island in Cincinnati, Ohio. Tyner DuMortier is a member of Ten Hairy Legs, an all-male dance troupe in New York, New York. Cory Jones owns and directs Velocity Dance Convention Inc., a nationwide dance convention company

based out of Los Angeles, California. Karah Braboy attends the University of Kentucky and is a member of the UK Dance Team. Last year, she was selected to compete with the national’s team in Orlando, Florida at UDA (Universal Dance Association) College Nationals. A professional career in the performing arts is not the dream of every Center Stage student – but it can be a possibility for everyone!

Making a Difference

Lisa Hill always knew she would dedicate her life to working with children. She thought about becoming a social worker or therapist but owning Center Stage Dance Studio gives her the best of both worlds; she can teach dance and make a difference to every child who is part of the Center Stage family. Hill’s main objective for her students is to be taught, nurtured, mentored and happy. At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids. Hill is dedicated to making Center Stage the best school it can possibly be. The studio maintains a high quality of instruction and is proud of its outstanding reputation for excellence. As a dance teacher and educator Hill takes the responsibility of teaching her students very seriously. “I am committed to providing as much value as possible to students and their families. I want my students to learn to dance, but more importantly, I want to instill in them the values that I hold dear; hard work, dedication, teamwork, and kindness to others.”

Kindness, Harmony & A Positive Self Image In light of the recent tragic national events, Hill is focused on kindness, harmony and a positive selfimage for her students. “As a teacher I am helping to mold young people and I take that responsibility very seriously,” she told

me. “We make a point to foster an environment of mutual respect and nurturing at Center Stage. Dance teaches you how to work as a team and how to overcome conflicts in a positive manner. When you work together you create healthy, strong and positive young people.” Center Stage is about family – Hill’s family and her dance families. She shared her passion for dance with the two nieces she has raised, and the children she has adopted. She taught them to dance and now they are teaching their children. Last year Hill’s daughter Courtney joined the instructors as an associate teacher. This is the third generation of teachers in the family. Having her family in the studio is a true blessing, but for Hill, the best gift is when her former students bring their own children back for lessons. Center Stage Studio is truly a multigenerational endeavor.

Structure & Fun

At this time of the year, many dancers and their parents are weighing their options and considering where to take dance instructions. Center Stage has all the professional equipment and flooring you would expect from a top notch dance academy including floating floors, floor to ceiling mirrors, ballet barres and a viewing window in the waiting area.

“In many ways all dance studios offer a very similar curriculum; tap, hip hop, jazz, ballet etc.,” Hill explained. “At Center Stage we design our classes to be age appropriate. They have structure and fun. Our instructors are approachable and experienced. We encourage our parents and students to discuss the instruction and expectations at any time. Our parents know that the dances and costumes will be age appropriate and current; suitable for all audiences to view. I am not only an instructor and owner, but I have fostered over 42 children and raised eleven more, eight of which I have adopted. I think I can safely say I have experience with children!” Tyner Dumortier

Affordable Classes

Another priority for Hill is making sure her classes are affordable. “In today’s economy, and as a single parent, I know how hard it is provide children with all the opportunities you want for them. By making my studio the most affordable in town, I hope to encourage families to become involved with dance.” “As a parent, I know what dedication and hard work involves”, said Hill. “By example, I can show them that hard work and dedication pays off.” Center stage is committed to providing a positive dance education experience. Being in a dance school creates memories that last a life time. Hill wants those memories to be wonderful. Hill is committed to creating a legacy for her students and for her family.

In-house Competition Team

Center Stage offers an in house competition team. Any student, five and over, who attends Center Stage can be a part of the team. There are no auditions required. Hill wants every student at Center stage to excel. Competition helps the studio remain current and vital. Student and instructors learn what’s cutting edge in the dance world. The competition team helps students take their dance techniques a little bit further then just classes. It’s just like being on a basketball team – competition makes you better and give you something to strive for.

Your Instructors

Center Stage is proud of the quality of its instructors. Although Hill teaches many of her own classes, she is assisted by Assistant Director Kim Dill and Lead Instructor Kristin Tracy. Instructor Ms. Stacy Stahl Brown has 30 plus years of teaching experience in many forms of dance and currently specializes in teaching Ballet and Pointe. She holds a bachelor’s degree in performing

arts with an emphasis in dance. Hill is also assisted by Daniel Baine, (from Illinois) who teaches Hip Hop. Hill also brings in guest instructors from across the country, giving the Center Stage students additional opportunities to learn new skills. Center Stage Dance Studio is located inside Energy Fitness on New Holt Road in Paducah. “It’s a great location for our families and dancers,” Hill explained. “Parents can choose to work out while their child is dancing, or siblings can take a gym or martial arts class from the schools located in the complex. Child care is also available on site for gym members. If they wish to stay and watch their child’s class we have a private viewing room where parents can watch through a large, ‘one way’ observation window Center Stage has also reached out to neighboring local communities offering classes at the Mayfield YMCA and in Benton at the Joe Creason Center. This allows families to avoid the drive time to Paducah while still taking advantage of the excellent instruction and instructors available at Center Stage.

The 8th Annual Big Brown Truck Pull for SOKY by Amy Noles

A

ugust is filled with outstanding community events including the hugely popular Big Brown Truck Pull. This will be the 8th year for this exciting community fundraising event for Special Olympics Kentucky (SOKY). The money raised benefits the athletes from Paducah/McCracken County and throughout the state. For those involved it is more than a fundraising effort, The Big Brown Truck Pull raises awareness about the special needs population in western Kentucky.

Tons of Fun!

More than 30 teams are expected to participate when the “Biggest Challenge in Kentucky” makes its return trip to in historic downtown Paducah on Saturday, August 6. The annual Big Brown Truck Pull for Special Olympics will be the highlight of the evening and will take place during the LIVE on the River concert series. Teams of 15 from companies and organizations throughout the area will flex their muscles for Special Olympics vying to see who can pull a loaded UPS 18-Wheeler 12 feet in the fastest time. That’s approximately 80,000 pounds! Younger teams have the option of pulling a UPS panel delivery truck – still heavy but a little easier to get moving.

Be a Team!

Teams are limited to 15 pullers and can be made up of friends, family members or coworkers. Many teams that participate in the Big Brown Truck Pull come from companies and other community organizations, but they could just as easily be any 15 friends or neighbors. Teams raise a minimum of $750 (or about $50 per team

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest pull time in men’s, women’s and co-ed divisions as well as to the team and individual who raises the most funds, the team that shows the most team spirit, the best team cheer and the team with the best team t-shirt or costume! On August 6 it will all come down to strength and determination as they take the rope and pull that truck! “Our goal this year is to raise $30,000,” explained Laura Miller, West Regional Director for Special Olympics Kentucky. “We would hope to register 30 teams, but we still have a distance to go if we are to meet that goal.” Teams can sign up to compete on-line at 2016paducahtruckpull.kintera.org.

Sports, Training & Competition

“Special Olympics prides itself on being able to offer sports training, competition and programs at little to no cost to our athletes and families,” said Miller. “We currently offer five different sports throughout the year in McCracken County. By raising additional funds, we hope to expand the sports opportunities and local SOKY programs.” The money raised will help with uniforms, transportation and equipment needs. “In addition to raising funds, we also hope that this event helps to raise awareness for our programs,’ said Miller. “Many people don't realize that we work year round with our athletes and there are a lot of volunteer opportunities available. We'd love to find some new volunteers and athletes as a result of this event!”

Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special mental and physical limitations. Participation in competitive events is open to all individuals eight years of age or older. Training and competition in local, area, state, and national programs is offered year-round in Kentucky in 15 sports. In addition to its traditional sports competitions, Special Olympics also offers early childhood programming through the Young Athletes Program and medical screenings though the Healthy Athletes Initiative. Special Olympics Kentucky began as a one-day event in Louisville in 1970 and has expanded to serve more than 7,400 athletes statewide annually. Special Olympics has now been changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Kentucky for 45 years. Special Olympics Kentucky has immediate volunteer needs at upcoming events. iCARE

A Care Givers' Guide by Amy Noles with Joe Evanko Editor’s Notes: My father had Alzheimer’s for over 10 years before he passed away from this awful disease. It robbed him of his independence, his identity and, as it progressed, his memory, peace of mind and dignity. Caring for him was always a challenge and, as I lived here in the US, that fell largely to my mother and sister. Like many people who suffer from the symptoms of this illness, Dad didn’t always understand what was happening around him or why he was being helped with daily tasks. He forgot how to do the simple things we take for granted each day. This article is designed to help those who have a friend, family member, or are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. It’s also to honor the caregivers like my sister and mother.

caregivers. Local retired medical practice executive, Joe Evanko, runs a support group for Alzheimer’s disease in Mayfield that meets once a month. His best advice for any caregiver of an Alzheimer’s patient - never, ever argue! “You can deflect and divert, but don’t argue with the person,” Evanko explained. “One example might be someone with Alzheimer’s saying, ‘I want to go home,' even when he/she is home. Instead of saying, ‘You are home!’ Look, pause, smile, and say, ‘Home must be a lovely place. Can you describe home to me?’ After a few minutes of explanation, the situation has been diverted and forgotten about.”

Maintaining good hygiene for people with Alzheimer’s is one of the biggest challenges caregivers face. As dementia progresses,

ave you or a family member recently received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease? It’s important to learn as much as you can about the disease and how to care for someone who has it. Caring for an Alzheimer’s patient can be difficult and timeconsuming. A common feeling among caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s is frustration – how do I care for this person? Each day may bring different challenges but learning about the disease can help you understand and cope.

The ‘Fog’ of Alzheimer ’s

Alzheimer’s varies from person to person. It can progress faster in some people than in others, and not everyone will have the same symptoms. In general, Alzheimer’s takes many years to develop, becoming increasingly severe over time. As the disease gets worse, people need more help. They can lose the ability to perform basic physical functions such as walking. Eventually, they require total care.

Don’t Take Them Literally

People with Alzheimer’s often make statements, or have conversations, that may not make immediate sense to their

Alzheimer’s disease is an illness of the brain. It causes large numbers of nerve cells in the brain to die. This affects a person’s ability to remember things and think clearly. People with Alzheimer’s become forgetful and easily confused. They may have a hard time concentrating. They may have trouble taking care of themselves and doing basic things such as preparing meals, bathing, and getting dressed.

13

finding the right balance between comfort and control is the key to maintaining the dignity of a loved one. Remember, even people with advanced memory loss continue to have wishes for privacy, dignity and a desire to avoid threat, and physical discomfort.

Personal Hygiene - Bathing

A person with Alzheimer’s may become more resistant to showering or bathing over time as she or he forgets the reason for staying clean and becomes more sensitive to discomfort and lack of privacy. Try to adjust your level of assistance to the person’s needs: Encourage independence if possible, assisting only as necessary. “An Alzheimer patient does not have to bathe every day,” said Evanko. “A sponge bath every day, with a full shower twice a week, should suffice.”

Before assisting with bathing sure everything is close at hand: Large towels, soap and shampoo in plastic bottles. Room temperature and water temperature should be neither too hot or too cold - make sure it’s comfortable. Encourage a sense of control by giving choices: Bath or shower? Keep the routine regular and coach the person for each step, encouraging her or him to help.

Get well and go

Home.

Safety is a Key

It’s important to know that many folks with Alzheimer’s have balance and coordination issues – or they simply forget how to hold things or walk. Bathrooms can be dangerous places if you’re not steady on your feet. Provide supervision by a familiar person of the same sex, if at all possible. Install grab bars and bath seats, use non-skid mats and keep the bathroom floor dry. It might be a good idea to lower the thermostat on your water heater to prevent burns and keep sharp objects such as hand razors out of sight. Once again plan to take things slowly and remain calm and gentle. Avoid vigorous washing and pat dry. Use non-rinse soap products and non-stinging “baby” shampoo.

As Alzheimer’s and other dementias progress, it becomes more likely that someone with these conditions will lose control of their bladder and bowels. An older adult may lose the ability to recognize when going to the bathroom is necessary, or forget where the bathroom

is or even how it functions. Modify the bathroom to make it easy to use. A raised seat, grab bars and night lights are helpful.

Alzheimer ’s Association Support Group

Evanko has found that setting a schedule is very important for Alzheimer’s patients. “The clock says its eight o'clock. That means it’s time to go to the bathroom,” Evanko explained as an example. “It’s a great way to manage situations like this. It takes the blame off of you… you’re not making the patient go to the bathroom; the clock is.” Notice the frequency of accidents, and then remind the person to use the bathroom before that length of time is up. See if the person has ways to signal it’s time to go, such a pulling at clothing, making facial expressions or using certain words. Give the person plenty of time and privacy, if possible.

Choose clothing that is easy to remove and to launder. Adult briefs and incontinence pads/sheets make life easier. Be careful about withholding fluids (this can cause problems like dehydration), but consider reducing them before bedtime. Clear the path to the bathroom, keep the door open and consider glow-in-the-dark tape to show the way. If nighttime is particularly problematic, consider a bedside commode or urinal.

Dressing & Grooming

Maintain familiar activities like trips to the hairdresser and the mall to choose clothing for as long as possible. Once that is no longer possible, seek out reliable home services to help with daily tasks. Getting dressed each day can be truly challenging for an Alzheimer’s patient. It’s easy for a person with this disease to become frustrated or even overwhelmed with choosing and putting on clothes. Again, remain calm, leave plenty of time and offer encouragement and clear instructions.

BROOKDALE

Lay out clothes or hand them in the order they should be put on. Offer a maximum of two choices. Clothes should be easy to get into (Velcro is great), comfortable, and loose-fitting. If the person wants to wear the same thing all the time, get duplicates or things that resemble each other. Choose comfortable supportive, non-skid shoes. Help to choose outerwear appropriate for the weather.

Whatever we can do to help,we’ll do it with care. At Brookdale, your loved one is a member of our family.

Use familiar toiletries and makeup. Substitute nail files for clippers and electric shavers for hand razors. Demonstrate how to do tasks such as combing hair or putting on lipstick and guide their hands as needed.

You’ll find our care is delivered with knowledge gained from serving families for generations. Join our community to discover how you or your family member will feel right at home.

Caregivers are Heroes

As a caregiver for a person with Alzheimer’s, you are on a hero’s journey. Reward yourself for each accomplishment, know that you can make a big difference in a person’s life and take care of yourself, too. Although it is completely normal and understandable, becoming angry or frustrated does little good. Maintaining a can-do, calm and upbeat attitude will help a lot. “Don’t let the perfect become the enemy of the good,” as the old saying goes. Stay in the moment demonstrating, humoring and rewarding progress can advance the cause. Others ideas and resources can be found at alz.org where you can also sign up for helpful e-newsletters and access tools like an online support community or visit alzfdn.org and healthinaging.org.

Five Rings in RIO A Teachable Moment for Our Kids by Amy Noles

E

ven if you're not a sports enthusiast, the Summer Olympic Games and the following Paralympics are events that excites almost everyone. The opening ceremonies are always amazing and this year they’ll be in the spectacular Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. At Purchas Area Family Magazine we’re always looking for ways to broaden our kid’s horizons and introduce them to the wider world. You can make the games a ‘teachable moment’ with your children by introducing geography, history, science, and even math concepts – all Olympic themed of course!

Geography

Get a map of the world – you can print one from the internet. During the opening games you can locate the countries where athletes are from. Or, have your child mark a gold star on the countries who win gold. There are lots of ways to help them recognize countries around the world, both big and very small. It might encourage them to do some research about the very small ones such as Liechtenstein, Nauru or Monaco.

Go to kidzworld.com/quiz/4759-quiz-test-your-olympic-geography and take some Olympic geography quizzes.

Social Studies

Have your child chose a country represented in the Olympic Games. He/she can follow that country in the many different events, while learning about their language, culture, history, even food. Each member of your family can pick a different country and share what they have learned along the way. Make a dinner where the food is themed on the child’s country. You could make table decorations with the country flag (think coloring on white paper napkins or paper plates). Did you know that the language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese? Have your children research how that happened. (Hint: It’s similar to why Spanish is spoken in Mexico.) Visit jumpstart.com/common/flags-and-Olympics to find some activities with flags and the Olympics.

Math & Science

Hold your own Olympics and have your kids participate in a number of Olympic-style activities, such as a cotton ball shot put, paper plate discus throw, high arm jump, straw javelin throw, and sponge squeeze. History

Do you and your family know how the Olympics got started? Who was Olympus? What were the original sports played in the Ancient Greece Olympics? Olympic themed history lessons are endless. Kids may be interested in the history of the host country Brazil or finding out how many times the Olympics has been held in the USA. Read about and play games with some notable past Olympic athletes at teachervision.com/olympic-games/athletes/2342.html.

Have Fun with Trivia

The Olympics are a great way to learn something new every day. With that said, here is a list of 16 trivia-worthy facts about this year’s Olympic Games. 1. Rio 2016 will be the first time in Olympic history that a South American country has hosted the Games. The city won its bid in 2009, beating out Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo. 2. The torch relay began on April 21 in the Games' birthplace Olympia in Greece - before traveling across Brazil for more than 90 days and finishing in Rio on August 5. While in Greece, it will pass through the Eloenas refugee camp, near Athens, where one resident will be selected as a torch bearer. 3. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held in Rio's Maracanã Stadium, which boasts the world record for the most

fans ever to attend a soccer game. Although its current capacity is around 78,000, the stadium squeezed in at least 173,000 fans during the 1950 World Cup final. Maracanã hosted the World Cup final again in 2014. 4. Around 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are expected to take part in 17 days of the Olympiad, competing across 306 events. 5. The competition will take place in four different areas: Copacabana, whose world-famous beach will host beach volleyball; Barra, home to the Olympic Park; Deodoro, for aquatics, BMX, and equestrian centers; and Maracanã, which features two large stadiums.

6. Rugby Sevens makes its debut at the Rio Games, with both the U.S. women's and men's teams considered to be medal contenders. The seven-a-side variant of rugby lasts only 15 minutes per game. The U.S. is a defending rugby champion, of sorts, having won the gold medal in the 15-person version of the game the last time it featured at the Olympics — in 1924. 7. Golf will return to the Olympics

after a 112-year absence. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to reinstate the sport, which previously was played in the 1900 and 1904 Games. The 18 holes in Rio were designed by American golf-course architect Gil Hanse, who is based in Malvern, Pennsylvania. 8. The Rio games will be the first to feature Olympians born in the year 2000. Rules state that all competitors must have been born before Jan. 1, 2003, but many sports have other age requirements for health and safety reasons. The youngest competitors are likely to be from diving and gymnastics. 9. A team of athletes who have been forced to flee their countries will be allowed to compete for the first time. The (IOC) says five to 10 refugees are expected to qualify and compete under the Olympic flag. 10. The mascot for 2016 is "Vinicius," a yellow and blue creature representing Brazilian wildlife. It resembles a cat or monkey that can fly and has the power to stretch its limbs and body. It is named after Bossa Nova musician Vinicius de Moraes, one of the writers of "The Girl From Ipanema." Rio 2016 organizers say they hope Vinicius will help them raise 1 billion reais ($398 million) in merchandising. 11. There are 7.5 million tickets, with prices ranging from $40 for some swimming events to almost $3,000 for the best seats at the opening ceremony. Most popular events so far are soccer, basketball, volleyball and handball. 12. Organizers say they will prepare 60,000 meals per day to feed the athletes. Brazilian staples like rice and black beans and barbecued meat will be accompanied by other local offerings, such as tapioca, pao de queijo (cheese bread) and acai (an Amazonian fruit and so-called superfood). 13. Rio 2016 is looking for 70,000 volunteers, the first 50,000 of whom have already been selected — mostly from Brazil. The

18

AUGUST 2016 PAFM

U.S., U.K., Russia, and China comprise most of the other volunteers chosen so far. 14. Around 85,000 soldiers and policemen will be deployed — the largest security force assembled at any event in Brazil's history and twice as large as the security presence for London 2012. 15. Rio's taxi drivers, or "taxistas," are being given the chance to sign up for free online English lessons provided by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee. Drivers are often the first point of contact for fans, and those who take the four-month course will mostly likely be swapping "oi!" for "hi!" 16. Team USA took 556 athletes to the London 2012 Olympics, second only to the hosts, and is again expected to bring more athletes than all the other visiting nations in Rio. Qualifications are ongoing so the exact number of places is still up for grabs. The U.S. topped the medal table in 2012 with 46 golds and 104

overall — though one was later taken away — and is hoping to better the tally in the summer. The official 2016 Rio Olympics website is olympic.org/rio-2016

Reading Makes Me SLEEPY Are Your Kid's Eyes Ready to Learn? by Chelsey Johnson, OD Eye Care Associates of Kentucky

T

his school year, a good chunk of students won't be able to see the board. According to the American Optometrist Association, about 25 percent of school-aged children have undiagnosed vision problems that inhibit their ability to read properly or cause fatigue, among other effects. Parents and teachers may mistake these symptoms for the child not getting enough sleep, being dehydrated or, unfortunately, not

focusing. Do you know at what age kids should begin getting comprehensive eye exams? What are the symptoms of a child who can’t see optimally?

How early should I get my child’s eyes checked?

At six months of age, a baby should see their eye care provider for his or her first thorough eye examination. Even if no eye or vision problems are apparent, it is important to test your baby’s eye movement ability, unequal or excessive amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, the presence of an eye turn, and overall ocular health. The American Optometric Association’s InfantSEE program provides comprehensive eye exams to infants aged 6 to 12 months at no cost. There are several InfantSEE eye care providers in the western Kentucky area. At this time, if your infant’s eyes were normal and no further treatment was initiated, a second eye examination should be performed at age three before entering preschool and every two years thereafter. If treatment was initiated at the first examination, it is of utmost importance for your child to have a comprehensive eye examination every year. Why is it required for my child to have an eye examination before entering public preschool and kindergarten? Kentucky passed a law in 2000 stating that every child entering public preschool, Head Start, or public school for the first time must have an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist no later than January 1 of the school year. The state of Kentucky studied early childhood development and noted that problems with vision is one of factors that may limit a child’s ability to learn and succeed. We are fortunate that Kentucky legislators care about the wellbeing of our children’s vision and eye health - both are critical to their success as a student.

Why is it important to get my child’s eyes checked?

Young children don’t often realize that their world, and surroundings, are blurry and could be clearer. Their daily activities involve reading, writing, watching TV, using a tablet, playing outdoors, sports, and being guided by their parents or guardians. At a young age, children are often able to use their strong eye muscles to focus and compensate for blurry vision. It is crucial for children to have an eye examination so that they can be evaluated for the presence of an eye turn, or a lazy eye. Eye exams evaluate their focusing ability, eye muscle strength, coordination, eye tracking, color vision, depth perception, and ocular health. These eye conditions, if detected at a young age, can be treated and managed more effectively than if they are found later on in life. In some instances, glasses are not the only treatment option; some children may need vision therapy to train and strengthen their eyes. I always tell my patients and parents that just as your child continues to grow, develop, and change, so will their eyes.

Why does my child’s eye’s get “sleepy” when trying to read?

Occasionally, it can be normal for your child to get sleepy when reading, especially late at night. However, if it occurs frequently, it could suggest a vision problem. “Sleepy eyes,” as described by your child, may actually mean eye strain, headaches after long periods of near work, double

vision, or intermittent blur. These symptoms can often point to a misalignment of the eyes, focusing issues, and fatigue of the eye muscles that aim the eyes on the words when reading. Prescription glasses with an additive of vision therapy can often alleviate most of the symptoms listed above.

Why should I get my eyes dilated? What will it do to me?

Eye drops are used to dilate your pupils to give the eye doctor a better view of inside the eye. Some diseases can only be detected with dilation. The blood vessels in the retina (the back of your eye) can also indicate systemic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, or high cholesterol. These are the conditions we are looking for as well as ocular diseases such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. These conditions can affect your vision and can even cause blindness. Common side effects of dilating drops include sensitivity to light and temporary difficulty focusing lasting four or five hours.

How old does my child have to be to get contact lenses?

There is not a set age at which a child can begin to learn and wear contact lenses. It depends primarily on how motivated the child is, how responsible he/she is, and whether or not the child has good hygiene. A trial period can be initiated to see if he or she is a good candidate.

The Sing-Off

The ‘sing-off ’ competition at the HOT Summer Bash features selections from Peter and the Starcatcher and The Addams Family. This vocal contest pits a group of youth from MHT’s education department against a group of their more "seasoned" vocalists, and audience members will vote with their dollars to determine the winner.

Winner of the AACT New Play Fest - Exit Laughing

April 20-30, 2017 This play was the winner of the American Association of Community Theatre New Play Fest and was written by Paul Elliot. Exit Laughing is a hilarious comedy. For 30 years the weekly bridge night with the “girls," has been a tradition until it is halted when one of the foursome inconveniently dies. The friends "borrow" the ashes from the funeral home for one last card game, and the wildest, most exciting night of their lives involves a police raid, a stripper and a whole new way of looking life. “It’s never too late or too early, to seize the day” - that’s the message of Exit Laughing.

The Addams Family Musical

June 1-17, 2017 The Broadway musical, The Addams Family, begins as Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before, keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents. A heartwarming and funny show about the value of family no matter how different. For more information about the 53rd season or either of these events, call 270.444.6828 or email info@ mhtplay.com. Reading, Writing & SCHOOL LUNCHES by Britt Allgood

I

t's mid-summer as I write this article but back-to-school is on my mind. My niece, nephews and grandson will all be heading back to those hallowed halls of education in the coming weeks. They will need school supplies of course such as paper, binders, calculators, a new back pack and maybe even a lunch box.

The Modern Lunch Box

I can guess what you are thinking. In today’s modern society, why on earth does my child need a lunchbox? They can buy their lunch at school. Well, I haven’t eaten at a school cafeteria in a long time but I do remember that the food wasn’t exactly appealing - remember mystery meat! So, what’s the alternative? Pack a lunch for your child (or children) and even yourself. I’m not talking about a cold sandwich in a paper bag, (but let’s not rule that out). Replace the bag with a new reusable lunch box. Today you can get all types to lunch boxes from the traditional metal one with a thermos included, collapsible plastic ones that are liquid tight or even high end bento boxes. It all depends on your needs, how much time you have and your child’s willingness to carry a lunch.

A Better Diet

As for the cold sandwich, there is always a place in my heart for a nice hoagie, or ham and Swiss on rye, but there are alternatives and some aren’t that hard or time consuming to prepare. By packing your lunches, you get to choose what you and your family eats; or at least that’s the plan. You can’t stop a child from the old “lunch room swap” but if you pack things they like to eat that should be cut down to a minimum. As more people want to eat healthy, they are moving towards less processed, fresher and organic food. Cooking at home is becoming a more viable alternative but it does take some organization and preparation. I realize it’s easy to pick up one of those snack containers that contains meat, cheese, crackers and if you are lucky a bit of fruit. Why not make them yourself? Customize them with the things you and your child likes and you will save money in the long run. PAFM AUGUST 2016

Fresh Ideas

I’m always looking for new recipes. I’m sure, just like me, you get bored having the same types of food all the time. So, I did what I always do, I went to the internet to look for kid friendly recipes for school lunches. I was surprised at how many results I got from one search. It took me a few hours to review a half dozen or so sites and the corresponding recipes. As I looked at these links, I was thinking whether or not my nephews or niece would eat this. Some of the links were a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. The recipes were geared more toward adults. But I was surprised by the kid friendly recipes I found on a few other sites. One site that caught my attention was Food.com and the section was entitled “50 back to school lunches”. A list of several other sites will be at the end of the article. Some of the recipes were simple twists on old standby’s like “PB & J sushi,” but the site managers also included some rather unique recipes like Cheesy Taco Pockets (which I’m including at the end of the article), an Angry Bird’s Bento box, Cinnamon Apple Chips and Pizza Scrolls. Several of these can be prepared in bulk and frozen for later use. You can also use them for parties or as afterschool snacks.

An Interactive Lunch

One thing I noticed is that many of these lunch ideas involved assembling the lunch at school. I bet your kids would have fun making a mini pizza at school a lunch box fondue or “Fun-do”? (Bits of bread, cheese, vegetables and a dipping sauce such as marinara!) How about pretzel skewers for lunch? (Meat, cheese, and bread rolled up and skewered with a pretzel stick) with some honey mustard dipping sauce? I think that’s some of the appeal with the Lunchables® type meals. Put a twist on the sandwich idea by allowing your child to makeit-yourself sandwich at lunch time. Individually package the sandwich “fixins” and when lunch rolls around they can create their own special meal. (A baggie of lettuce, slices of peppers, triangles of spreadable cheese, sliced pepperoni or chicken.) If

you or your child don’t want to use bread, try whole wheat pita, tortillas or flat breads which are more appealing in my opinion and don’t tend to get squished in the lunch box.

No Nuts!

A large number of people have food allergies and one of the most common is nuts. Over the past few years several local schools have gone so far as to ban nut products. Students are discouraged from bringing nut products to school (including peanut butter). In western Kentucky schools deal with this issue on a case by case basis. Picky eaters don’t lose hope! There are some nut free peanut butter substitutes out there. I recently tried one called WowButter®* which is a soy based, gluten free peanut butter substitute with the consistency of creamy peanut butter. If you have a picky eater and they must have peanut butter, this may be an acceptable alternative.

The School Year Is Coming

The school year is just around the corner. Yes, Moms and Dads the first day of school in McCracken County is scheduled for August 4. You should be able to contact the school about these or any other issues after August 1. I hope you have found this information helpful and remember that eating well is a choice.

CHEESY Taco Pockets by Mama's Kitchen

32 Pockets (about 15-16 servings)

INGREDIENTS 2 (17 1/3 ounce) packages of puff pastry sheets, 2 sheets per package 1 egg ½ TBSP water 1 ½ LBS ground beef ½ cup green bell pepper, chopped ½ cup white onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 medium tomato, seeded and chopped ½ cup catsup ¼ cup fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 tsp oregano 1 tsp cinnamon 1 ½ cups cheese, shredded (whichever type your child likes; Monterey, Monterey Jack, Colby or Mexican blend)

9. 10. 11.

DIRECTIONS 1. Remove the pastry from freezer and allow to thaw at room temperature for about 30 minute or until it’s easy to handle. 2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet cook the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper until beef is browned and vegetables are tender. Stir occasionally to break up the meat and prevent scorching. 3. Add garlic and cook for another minute, stirring constantly. 4. Drain all the grease from the pan and return to heat. 5. Add tomato, catsup, cilantro, cumin, chili powder, oregano, and cinnamon. Reduce heat to low and allow simmering for about 10 minutes. You want filling pretty dry. 6. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese and set aside to cool until easy to handle. 7. Work with one pastry sheet at a time, keeping others covered so they do not dry out. 8. On a lightly floured surface roll out a pastry sheet to a

rectangle about 16 x 12 inches and then cut into 8 even pieces (down middle length wise and then every four inches) Put a heaping teaspoonful of meat mixture in the center of the pastry. Mix the egg and water together and brush the pastry edges. Grab one corner of a pastry and fold over to form a triangle. Press edges with a fork to seal and brush the tops with more egg mixture. Repeat until you use all the ingredients. If baking immediately, preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Place the pastries on a greased baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 to 17 minutes or until golden brown. To freeze and bake later: Place pockets on parchment or wax paper and freeze until firm. Transfer them to a zipper type bag and store in the freezer. Remove desired amount from freezer when ready to use and bake as directed increasing time to 17 to 20 minutes or until brown. Serve with sour cream, catsup, salsa or your favorite dipping sauce.

This can be prepared in large quantities and bake immediately or freeze and bake later. PAFM AUGUST 2016

New Pathways for Children Bringing Hope to Children in Crisis by Amy Noles

M

ost of us live in a stable family home. We have a bed, three meals a day and the love of a family and friends. But for some children this normality is something they dream about. They may be living in a car, or sleeping on the floor or a stranger’s house. They may never know where their next meal is coming from or when they will be able to wash clothes, or take a bath. For one reason or another, their family situation has become unstable and they are at risk of abuse, neglect or far worse.

Kids Hurt

In our world many children are neglected and abandoned by those who are responsible for caring for them. In America, a report of child abuse is made every ten seconds and more than four children die each day from abuse. The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations.

Abused children often respond with anger, fear, discouragement, and feelings of hopelessness.

A Christian Ministry

New Pathways for Children (NP) is a 501(c)3 Christian ministry located in Melber, Kentucky. They are dedicated to caring for children during times of crisis by providing residential care and supportive services to children in need. Their mission is to minister to the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of at-risk children in a Christ-like atmosphere. Their vision is to bring hope to children in crisis. They rescue children out of their harmful environments and place them in a safe and loving home where we can instill in them a sense of hope and

belonging. New Pathways operates a 25-acre campus in Melber, with two residential homes for children ages 4-10. Families in Crisis “When a family experiences a crisis, such as the death of a parent, a job loss, incarceration, severe mental or physical health problems and children need a safe place to go, New Pathways can provide care for children around the clock at no cost to the family,” explained Stephanie Moss, Fundraising Coordinator at NP. “Almost all of the children we serve have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment. We can provide short-term, or long-term, placement and offer the environment, and tools to help children recover from trauma.” When children come to NP, all of their needs are met: Physical needs such as a bed, clothing, food, and personal item are provided but NP also takes them to school, to church, to counseling, and to extracurricular activities. "When children come to New Pathways it is the first time most of them have ever had a bed to themselves and the guarantee that they are going to have three healthy meals that day,” said Moss. “Some have been living in cars, or sleeping on a couch at a friends or relatives house. All of them are in desperate need of a safe, stable, and loving environment." New Pathways New Pathways began in 1990 – 26 years ago - when concerned Christians in western Kentucky were moved with compassion and motivated by love to provide better care for neglected, abandoned, and hurting children. The first home for girls was sponsored by Tennessee Children’s Home and established in Reidland under the

name West Kentucky Children’s Home. Two years later Eldon and Emma Belle Gardner donated a 27 acre tract of land near Melber, Kentucky for the purpose of constructing a children’s home dedicated to providing care for boys in a Christian environment. The Gardner campus is a beautiful reminder of God’s creative and healing power. New Pathways for Children was granted their autonomy in 1996 and for many years served girls in Reidland and boys in Melber. The Melber location consists of an administrative services office building, the Gardner house with accommodations for up 12 children and the Schmidt building with living space for 12 children along with a full gymnasium and large kitchen. Emma Belle’s Haven at The Gardner center is the location of our newest home completed in 2014 with room for 14 children. New Pathways is a private referral agency able to take care of children when a family needs help in a time of crisis. NP receive no government funding. All donations come from individuals, churches, local businesses, private grants, foundations and civic groups. Each child is served by a competent and caring staff of case managers, social workers, and licensed counselors. Treatment includes individual and family therapy and life skills development.
