hew! This issue of Purchase Area Family Magazine is huge! Welcome to our backto-school edition which includes our annual After School Enrichment and Activity Guide. It’s full of local businesses that offer educational and recreational opportunities for your family. We hope you’ll keep this pull-out and use it all year long! Regular readers of my editorial will already know that I am the FUN-Nana. Elijah, my grandson, came up with this name several years ago during his annual summer visit. I really love being a Mum and a Nana, and I look forward to being able to spoil my family when they come to town! My son, John, arrived first and we had a really wonderful two weeks together. John introduced us to disc golf and we played several courses around the area while he was here. John had a relaxing time and the cooler weather allowed us to take several long bike rides around the newly extended Greenway trail in Paducah. John is having a great year and it was very hard to say goodbye, but keeping in touch is going to be much easier with his new phone! Just 20 minutes after I put him on a plane home, I met my grandson, Eli, at the luggage carousel. Eli is now 13 and 5’ 7” tall. He’s eating as much as his uncle John who is 6’ 2” and none of his clothes, which we bought last Christmas, fit him! So, the first order of business was some shorts and T-shirts that were slightly bigger than his current size, (because he’s obviously going to keep growing for a while). Eli liked disc golf and biking too, and the new iPad mini so that we can Skype when he gets home! Now they have gone and both my fridge, and bank account look empty! But I have wonderful memories and pictures of the boys with the FUNNana. Editor’s Pick…If you have a baby or a small child, you have a high chair! It’s probably bulky, awkward to move and a pain to keep clean! When you take the kids to grandma’s house, or to play with friends or to the park, you have no safe way to feed your toddler. How many of us have tried to spoon feed a small, wiggling child while holding them and trying to grab a few bites of our own food at the same time! Don’t get me started about restaurant high chairs…which are often broken and questionably cleaned. As my office staff says “Amen” in a chorus, PAFM is here to save the day! We have found the perfect portable, washable, high chair. Yes, it can go to grandma’s house, the park, camping trips, picnics and the beach because it packs into a neat sleeve just like a portable chair. AND, we have one to giveaway during August. Ciao baby™ the go-anywhere-high-chair comes in fabulous colors including mossy oak pink! It’s free standing, requires no assembly, light weight, easily unfolds, locks into place, made of durable material with a clear vinyl tray cover that easily wipes clean, has a cup holder and lap belt. This portable highchair is convenient to carry, stores in a bag, and is ideal for children up to three years old. It makes a great shower gift! Want to see all the colors and features? isa Hill, owner and principal dance teacher at Center Stage Dance Studio, is very proud of her dancers’ achievements at competition this year. The senior dancers, teen dancers and the combined team of the ‘Hot Shots’ (eight and under) and junior dancers all won first place overall champions. The preteen dance team took home second overall champions. The teen team went on to win the overall national showcase. “Now I have to figure out where to put the eight-foot trophy we won!” said Hill smiling. Hill was also recognized as Studio of The Year. More than 35 schools, with over 800 acts, from all over the country, performed at the competition. This was a tremendous honor for me,” Hill told me. This prestigious recognition of Hill’s success and experience, as both a dance instructor and studio owner, can
be added to a long list of awards she has received over the years. The budding young dancers, featured on the cover this year are Bailey Beyer holding the ‘D’, Grace Bakehouse with the ‘A’, Ann Marie Peffer stands with ‘N’, Chloe Lanier has the ‘C’, the ‘E’ is with Hannah Hill, and the ‘?’ is held by Avery Brown. “As you can see we have students of all ages,” Lisa Hill told me. August is not only the beginning of a new class year for Center Stage but the month they say ‘goodbye’ to their senior dance class. “This is not only one of our largest graduating classes but they have all been with me for many years,” Hill explained. “Some of these young ladies began at Center Stage
Growing Up Center Stage

in 1999! These young women have grown up in front of our eyes; they are a part of the Center Stage family and we will really miss them. It’s such an honor to see them grow to be remarkable young women and leave for college, and their adult lives.” I sat down with the graduating seniors recently to find out what makes Center Stage such a success. The members of this year’s senior class at Center Stage are Brianna Bigenho (18), Megan Gibson (18), Miranda Meier (17), Cecilia Pont (18) and Dana Young (17). Megan and Brianna have been dancing since they were three years old. “Everyone is going to say that their studio is the best,’ said Megan. “But what makes Center Stage different is that we truly feel this is our family. I’ve made best friends here; friends I will have for life. We all want the same thing and although there is friendly competition between us, we try to drive each other to be the best we can be.” “We practice a lot but I feel there’s a balance at Center Stage,” Brianna told me. “Some of us have been cheerleaders and on the school dance team. Megan played volleyball and a couple of us play other sports. We take AP classes and some of us have jobs. Younger kids at the studio play soccer and even powder puff football!” “During the summer we often practice from 9 a.m. to noon,” commented Miranda. “Because some of us work, we get here early and practice together. Everyone supports each other. The faculty treats us like we’re their kids! We have an awesome faculty and they will come to the studio outside of class to help us with routines and prepare for competition. Miss Lisa always has words of wisdom for us when things get hard. Kristin is not going to sugar coat anything; she keeps us focused. Miss Stacy is great for discipline. She’s given us an excellent foundation for dance. She’s good at explaining everything and she’s very patient and dedicated. Kim is our leader! She keeps us grounded and we know she’s always going to be there if you need her. She’s the ‘pusher’ – she’ll drive you to get better.” “We’re fortunate to have cutting edge dance instruction at Center Stage,” said Megan. “With four choreographers and guest teachers each year, we get exposure to a variety of styles. It helped me when I went to the Governor’s School for the Arts.” It doesn’t have to end when they leave for college. Center Stage seniors can come back during breaks from school and even perform as alumni at the end of year recital. One of the programs that the seniors have started at Center Stage is called ‘little sisters.’ “We draw names to be the ‘big sister’ of a younger student,” explained Cecilia. “We help to mentor them and we support them as they grow up at Center Stage. We help them practice their solos for recital, we calm their nerves before shows and competition, and we help to answer questions that their parents may have about dance or competitions.” “I love that we are one big family,” Dana told me. “We work through things and grow together through every adversity. We recently had a big pool party and each team made shirts: The seniors were tie-dyed and we wore them for our senior picture. We take awesome trips with Center Stage including attending dance camp in New York and taking classes in Florida. Two years ago over 50 families from Center Stage went to Las Vegas for competition. This year we went to Biloxi and one of our families hosted a huge beach party on a plantation.” Center Stage has developed students who, as adults, have become professional dancers and have performed from New York to Europe, in both stage shows and professional dance companies. “But we’re just as happy to provide instruction to children who come to dance for fun,” Hill said. “Even though we have a competition team, the majority of our students are here for the enjoyment of dance. They are not interested in competing. The competitions help us to grow as teachers and individuals and, if they wish, it gives some of our students the opportunity to take their skills to a higher level.” ‘This article is paid advertising and the information contained therein is provided by the featured individual or business. At this time of the year, many dancers and their parents are weighing their options and considering where to take dance instructions. “In many ways all dance studios offer a very similar curriculum; tap, hip hop, jazz, ballet etc.,” Hill explained. “At Center Stage we design our classes to be age appropriate. They have structure and fun. Our instructors are approachable and experienced. We encourage our parents and students to discuss the instruction and expectations at any time. Our parents know that the dances will be age appropriate and current; suitable for all audiences to view. I am not only an instructor and owner, but I have fostered over 35 children and raised ten more, seven of which I have adopted. I think I can safely say I have experience with children!” Center Stage Dance Studio is located inside Energy Fitness on New Holt Road in Paducah. “It’s a great location for our families and dancers,” Hill explained. “Parents can choose to work out while their child is dancing, or siblings can take a gym or martial arts class from the schools located in the complex. Child care is also available on site. If they wish to stay and watch their child’s class we have a private viewing room where parents can watch through a large, ‘one way’ observation window. Our families really like all the amenities that this location has to offer.” Center Stage Dance Studio has all the amenities you would expect including spring floors, Marley dance surfaces, sound equipment, floor to ceiling mirrors, dance barres and more! Although Hill teaches many of her own classes, she is assisted by Assistant Director Kim Dill and Lead Instructor Kristin Tracy. Instructor Ms. Stacy Stahl Brown has 30 plus years of teaching experience in many forms of dance and currently specializes in teaching Ballet and Pointe. She holds a bachelor’s degree in performing arts with an emphasis in dance. Hill is also assisted by Daniel Baine, (from Illinois) who teaches Hip Hop. Student teachers assisting with instruction this year include Megan Gibson, Brianna Bigenho, Dana Young and Karah Brayboy.

With the increasing popularity of TV shows such as America’s Got Talent and stage musicals such as Wicked, many students have requested vocal instruction to complement their dance skills. Beginning this fall, local vocal coach Natalie Krupansky will offer vocal instruction to Center Stage students. Krupansky has a Masters in Music Education from Murray State University and an additional Masters in Vocal Performance from University of Kentucky. Following the completion of that degree, she was a studio artist for Kentucky Opera Company in Louisville. She maintains a private voice studio in Paducah facilitating students primarily from Paducah Tilghman.
You can also register by phone by calling 270-444-8111 for all locations. Center Stage Dance Studio is located at 2343 New Holt Road (Inside Energy Fitness), Paducah
Hill also brings in guest instructors, giving the Center Stage students additional opportunities to learn new skills. This year’s guest instructors will come from as far away as California, Georgia and Florida. They bring the opportunity for students to work with professional choreography and to explore different skills, and styles. “This helps to keep students interested and motivated,” Hill explained. v

With Tammy Carr, APRN - Baptist Health Women’s Choice
Taking Charge of Your Health Why a visit to a gynecologist is important for all women
I
t’s not uncommon these days for your primary health provider to offer to provide yearly gynecology exams when you have a physical. They will often do a pap smear and a breast exam along with other routine tests. I asked local APRN, Tammy Carr, a member of the staff at Baptist Health Women’s Choice, why you should see your gynecologist. “A gynecologist is trained specifically to treat female patients,” explained Carr. “The physicians and specially trained Nurse Practitioners, or APRN staff, can answer questions that deal with everything from hormonal changes to sexual health. We provide a comfortable environment to discuss all female issues.”
How old should my daughter be to visit a gynecologist? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that girls have their first gynecologic visit between 13 and 15 years old whether they are sexually active or not. “On the first visit all we do is have a chat,” explained Carr. “They can then get to know us and will feel more at ease when it is time for their first actual physical exam.” The goal is to have a complete health history and begin to establish rapport. Moms often take teenage girls to their own OB/GYN, but here are other factors to consider when choosing a gynecologist for your daughter: • Would your daughter be more comfortable with a younger physician or a female for instance? • Not all doctors practice both gynecology and obstetrics, and your daughter may prefer to establish one relationship and stick with that doctor through her child bearing years. • Is your daughter likely to leave town for college? • Talk to your child about what type of physician she would prefer. She may want to go to a doctor that her friends have already been to.
What should they expect? “Most young women come in for their first visit around age 13,” said Carr. “Young girls sometimes feel intimidated or embarrassed to talk about things so I let them know why I am here and that they have somebody to talk to if they have questions. We will discuss what a normal menstruation 16 • August2014 www.purchasefamilymag.com
Tammy Carr, APRN cycle (period) is, and that ‘normal’ is not the same for everyone. We go over any problems they are experiencing and I’ll answer other questions they have about their health. They do not need an exam unless they are having issues that require one. We also teach them self-breast exam and discuss overall breast health.”
Covering all the basics Your gynecologist should get to know your daughter, and if appropriate, ask whether she is dating or not. “We discuss all of their options for birth control and help them make informed choices,” said Carr. Safe sex is discussed. “We talk about sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention and the importance of also using condoms. No one wants to see their young girl become sexually active, but having control of their body and being responsible is empowering for young women. We tell girls about the STD’s that are out there, how you can catch different ones, which are curable and which are not and how to protect yourself. A lot of young women will ask their gynecologist questions they would never discuss with anyone else. We partner with them to help them live a long healthy life.” It is a misconcep-
tion that the gynecologist is only there to do pap smears. A gynecologist can be a great source of information; especially if you have questions or want to take good care of yourself. If your daughter has not started menstruation or noticed any secondary sexual characteristics or pubic hair by the time she is 16, she should be examined by a gynecologist. “We like to see all young women by the age of 18,” said Carr. “It’s important to discuss female health issues, including Gardisil, before they leave high school. The Gardasil vaccine may benefit girls between age nine and 26. It protects against two of the high risk strains of the HPV virus that are known to cause cervical cancer.”
quent concern for young women is whether the appearance of their genitalia is normal. The gynecologist can provide reassurance that everything is as it should be. By telling your daughter what the gynecologist does and reinforcing that she is there to promote wellness, your daughter may be more willing to go. “The gynecologist is a specialist who takes care of a woman over her lifetime and can do surgery on a number of different problems for female conditions. Every woman should have a gynecologist in her life.” v
There are many misconceptions about a visit to the gynecologist and your teen may be fearful or uneasy based on things they have heard. “We try to do everything we can to put our patients at ease,” said Carr. “We always explain what we are doing before it is done. We always use the smallest instruments we can to help ease discomfort. We are very much aware that some young girls may believe that the visit will be awkward, embarrassing or even unnecessary. I have been an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner for 25 years and always try to do everything I can to make my patients feel comfortable and give them the very best care that I can.”
What does a yearly gynecology exam consist of? “As with a first visit, a yearly exam usually starts with a discussion about overall health and any issues the patient is having,” explained Carr. “There will be a thorough physical exam, blood work and, in older patients, a mammogram if indicated. We typically discuss problems related to your periods, or menopausal changes in the older patient along with any issues you may be experiencing. If the problem is an issue we would not normally treat, such as hypertension, thyroid problems, etc., we refer them back to the primary health provider. We also discuss things such as smoking cessation, alcohol and drug abuse.”
At what age should women begin regular pap smears? The pap smear is indicated for anyone who is 21 years old or once a girl has been sexually active for three years. If your daughter is sexually active, she needs a sexually transmitted disease screening for gonorrhea and Chlamydia. These can be done vaginally and at the same time as a pelvic exam. The pelvic exam looks for pelvic and vaginal infections.. Recognize that there are many reasons a young woman may see the gynecologist and that each person is seen as an individual with their own health issues and concerns. Children’s Chorus or Youth Chorus. Each of these groups are led by professional musicians and educators at regional colleges and universities. With auditions just around the corner (see audition schedule below) we hope you will consider enrolling your child today. Here’s an overview of the education programs we offer:
The Paducah Symphony Youth Orchestra & Sinfonia The mission of the PSYO is to provide comprehensive symphonic music education opportunities for performance oriented youth in the region, through a full youth symphony program supported by a preparatory string, and instrumental ensemble programs. The intent is to refine individual instrumental skills, and to provide varied and numerous performance opportunities, building an appreciation for classical music in the community, and the sociability of making music.
The PSYO is dedicated to developing student’s skills to a point that they are prepared for the collegiate world of music if they so choose to enter it. Many students continue on to pursue a professional career in music. Many of these students have even received scholarships to college for music. The PSYO is set to perform numerous times this upcoming season, including a special Side-bySide performance with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra during the March 14, 2015 concert at the Carson Center. The Paducah Symphony Youth & Children’s Chorus The Paducah Symphony Youth & Children’s Chorus is the only children’s chorus in the region to perform with a professional orchestra. The group consists of two ensembles; the PSO Children’s Chorus (grades 3-8) and the PSO Youth Chorus (grades 9-12) and are chosen by audition (see upcoming audition dates below). Performances include the PSO Christmas Concert, winter “Made in America” concert and a joint “Showcase” concert with the PSYO in May. Additionally, they perform at various community club meetings and events. The Paducah Symphony Children’s Chorus is dedicated to the growth and development of each child’s voice. This is achieved through teaching that includes proper vocal production, good diction and basic musicianship skills.
The children also sing developmentally appropriate repertory of the highest quality in a variety of musical genres. Also emphasized will be a capella singing, accompanied music including various instruments such as percussion, flute, violin, and piano, and standard singing languages including English, Latin, Hebrew and Spanish, to name a few. The Children’s Chorus is under the direction of Dr. Bradley Almquist, Professor of Music, who serves as the Director of Choral Activities at Murray State University and the Youth Chorus is under the direction of Dr. Amy Aucoin, assistant Professor of Music, Choral Music Education, at Murray State University. Both Children's and Youth Choruses are accompanied by another talented music educator, Mrs. Devonda Treece, of Paducah. The Youth & Children’s Choruses rehearse each Thursday from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church and perform between 12 and 15 times per season. Membership tuition for the 2014/15 season is $80 for the year. As with the PSYO, a limited number of scholarships are available. Visit Paducah Symphony.org or call 270.444.0065 for more information. The PSO is passionate about the youth in our community and we’re uniquely positioned to offer a broad range of music education programs and services. Last year alone the PSO reached over 12,000 students via our programming. In addition to the previously mentioned groups, the Paducah Symphony also offers a week long Summer Music Camp (every June), School Ensembles, Young Artist Competition, Outstanding High School Senior Awards and FREE student tickets to PSO concerts. We also offer Musical Chairs which allows students the opportunity to sit next to a professional musician during a rehearsal of the PSO, as well as two Young Peoples Concerts as part of the Class Acts Series at the Carson Center. Lastly, and certainly not least, Musical Story Time is a partnership with the McCracken County Library that encourages reading and music exploration. There are many places to get involved with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra and we hope to serve your children this year. For more information about our programs and services, please visit PaducahSymphony.org. To sign your child up for an audition, please email teale@paducahsymv phony.org or call the PSO office at (270) 444.0065.

Heart and Soul 9th Annual Easter Seals West KY Art Celebration and Auction
W
ho didn’t enjoy finger painting or making a mess with water colors as a kid? Even as we get older, there is something about a blank canvas and a palette of colorful paints that simply calms the soul. The folks at Easter Seals West KY (ESWKY) know the joy that art can bring to anyone, young or old. For the past nine years they have been offering their adult clients with intellectual or physical disabilities an art program. Not only has it been a great way to help these individuals with confidence and self-expression but the program has helped to develop their artistic talents and abilities. These exceptional artists have been particularly busy of late, wetting their paint brushes and preparing their canvases for Easter Seals’ 9th Annual Heart and Soul Art Celebration and Auction!
Easter Seals Easter Seals is a nonprofit charitable organization that has specialized in assisting adults and children with disabilities and special needs for over 90 years. Easter Seals has more
than 550 service sites in the US, Canada, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Easter Seals’ Mission is to provide exceptional services, education, outreach and advocacy that will help people living with autism and other disabilities to live, learn, work and play in our communities. Western Kentucky is fortunate to have a chapter that has been a support and a blessing in the community since 1954.
An opportunity for expression The assistance of local artists made it possible to add the art program at ESWKY nine years ago. Artist Diana Davenport started working in the Adult Day Care program over 13 years ago. “On some occasions, when I was working with our clients at the day care program, I would paint with them,” she told me. “I saw the potential of the pieces they were creating and we decided to expand that into a regular program. This led to the refurbishment of a garage into our art studio.” In recent years the program has welcomed artist, Deborah Lyons and a volunteer, Carol Harlan, as instructors. Professional artist Deborah Lyons owns the Deb Lyons Art Loft and specializes in mixed media paintings and fiber art. “In the ESWKY art program, we try to get to know the artists and what interests them about art” Lyons told me. They will often tell us what they are interested in, whether it’s pursuing a certain style of painting, or just learning more about art in general. We work with a variety of material and media including oils and sculpture. We’ve been very fortunate to have guest artists who come in and collaborate with our artists: Sometimes they will hold a big class and sometimes they will work one on one.” 22 • August2014 www.purchasefamilymag.com
Each piece is crafted with careful thought and attention to the student’s particular preferences. “We get to know what the student wants,” Davenport explained. “Sometimes they’ll come in with a particular idea, such as an animal or plant. We might look at some photos together as a way to brainstorm. Some of our students prefer abstract pieces and generally have their idea already in their mind.”
The Heart and Soul Art Celebration & Auction
The joy of creativity
Amalia Harris is a case manager for Easter Seals and the chairman of the committee coordinating the event, which consists of both a live and silent auction. “This year will be really unique because we will be auctioning some of the students work during the silent auction,” Harris told me. “These pieces are more affordable than those that will be seen in the live auction. This year’s live auction will feature 20 pieces: Some by the artists at Easter Seals with assistance from professional artists and some donated pieces from local artists. This year’s featured artist will be Easter Seals client Anthony Jeffrey.”
The ESWKY art program is very popular and currently around 60 students participate. The individuals who come to the program make out a monthly goal sheet after consulting with the artists and decide whether they can come twice a month or every week. “With everyone’s schedules in mind we plan our group classes,” Lyons explained. “We hold those in the mornings with a large group and then work one on one in the afternoons. Each session is about an hour.” “It’s been an amazing program for the students here,” Davenport told me. “They’ve grown as individuals, not just in their artistic skills. Creating works of art has helped the clients to express emotions that they may not have been able to express otherwise. What art gives to them is priceless. We have artists who have started buying canvasses and working on their free time at home. We even have some students who have started selling their art in the community!”
[
]
“I didn’t have anything in life that excited me or made me want to get up in the morning, and now, art does that for me.” -Chris Thompson, participant in the Art Program
“The Art Program is a form of therapy for these individuals and a source of joy to the students and the teachers,” said Lyons. “Every day is just delightful working with the Art Program; it’s a very happy place.”
The Heart and Soul Art Celebration & Auction will be held on September 13th from 6 - 9 p.m. at Walker Hall in Paducah. Walker Hall is located at 229 Madison Street near the riverfront. Tickets are $30 per person and you can purchase them by calling Easter Seals at (270) 443-1200 or stopping by at Etcetera Coffee Shop on 6th Street.
“Art is my passion.” Davenport said. “Working with the art program at Easter Seals and getting to see the individuals grow artistically, is amazing. I’m very excited about our auction and seeing the student’s pieces being featured.” Although the official dress code for the auction is cocktail attire many of the guests enjoy dressing up for the evening’s festivities. The evening event will feature live music, libations, hors d’oeuvres and delicious food prepared and donated by Chef Patrick Fletcher and the culinary arts students of WKCTC in collaboration with Midtown Market. “What adds to the very special ambiance of this event is that many of the artists themselves are present,” explained Davenport. “They assist in showing the pieces during the auction and this allows those bidding to meet the artist and see who created the work.” All of the funds raised through the auction go toward supporting and growing the art program at Easter Seals. You can find out more about Easter Seals and their programs by visiting www.easterseals.com/westkentucky. v

or women and men an overly large breast can be an embarrassment and a source of physical discomfort. An out of proportion breast shape can produce unwanted attention and make clothing difficult to fit. Breast size can be reduced in both women and men. There are some obvious differences in the treatment, but a lot of similarities as well. Liposuction has become such a common procedure that almost everyone in the United States is familiar with it today. We tend to think of it in connection with the belly or
24 • August2014 www.purchasefamilymag.com
‘love handles’ in men and the hips and thighs as well as the belly in women. It is not generally known that it is an excellent, non-surgical method of breast reduction. Traditionally, women with overly large breasts have had breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of the breast. While necessary in some women, it produces a scar on the breast as an inevitable result. In some instances, where the breast is mostly fatty tissue, using liposuction can produce a significant reduction without surgical incisions.
‘This article is paid advertising and the information contained therein is provided by the featured individual or business. They are solely responsible for its accuracy.’
The Tumescent technique involves using a very weak anesthesia solution to numb the breast thoroughly. When done in this manner, liposuction has an excellent safety record and a very quick recovery time and is the primary form of treatment for males. Gynecomastia, the term given to an overly large male breast, is a direct translation from Latin is “female breast”, which clearly defines why males dislike this condition. An enlarged, soft breast does not look right on the male torso and can be a source of embarrassment and poor self-image for a man. Medical causes such as medication side effects, hormonal imbalance, pubertal enlargement (which is usually temporary), and others need to be considered. In most cases gynecomastia is due to a fatty deposit beneath the skin which makes it highly treatable with Tumescent liposuction. Only in cases of severe skin and soft tissue excess is surgical removal necessary. For both men and women a compression garment is necessary and no upper body workouts are recommended for a month to enhance the result. Time off from work and/or non-athletic activities is usually no more than a day or two. The effects are dramatic and very positive, as people are no
longer self-conscious or pre-occupied with this area of their body. So, the treatment is outpatient liposuction with a quick recovery and minimal downtime. Liposuction to reduce breast size is safe, effective and avoids surgical incisions to achieve long lasting and positive results. Once the skin contracts to the new chest contour the results are permanent, assuming you do not gain excessive weight from that point on. These are some of our happiest patients.
How much fat can be removed from an area? It is determined by the patient’s goals and safety guidelines that Dr. Kaye follows. Your health and safety is our number one focus.
Can more than one area be done at the same time? Yes. It depends on the amount of Tumescent, the mixture of lidocaine and epinephrine, that is used.
How much weight will I lose? Liposuction is not a weight loss program! Liposuction is for patients that are at a steady weight and have a parv ticular area of fatty tissue that will not go away.

ACTIVE CARE
By: Heath Schipp, D.C., Active Care Chiropractic
Back to School Advice from Your Chiropractor
B
ack pain is pervasive among American adults, but a new and disturbing trend is emerging. Young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of overweight backpacks is a contributing factor, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that backpack-related injuries sent more than 7,000 people to the emergency room in 2001 alone. The preventable injuries from backpacks range from neck, back, and shoulder strains to bruises and even fractures. The physical stress of a backpack can affect your child’s nervous system and overall well-being.
The most common signs that a backpack is too heavy include: • Frequently changing position while carrying the back pack. • Leaning forward to walk. • Struggling to put on the backpack. • Pain in any area before, during and after wearing a backpack. • Tingling or numbness especially in the arms or hands. • Red marks on the skin from the straps.
26 • August2014 www.purchasefamilymag.com
This new back pain trend among youngsters isn't surprising when you consider the disproportionate amounts of weight they carry in their backpacks - often slung over just one shoulder. Of those children carrying heavy backpacks to school, 60% had experienced back pain as a result. As schools get bigger, and the distance between classes and lockers increases, some students are forced to carry their books with them all day long. The ACA believes that limiting the backpack's weight to no more than 10% of the child's body weight and urging the use of ergonomically correct backpacks are possible solutions.
What Can You Do? The ACA offers the following tips to help prevent the needless pain that backpack misuse could cause the students in your household.
• Make sure your child's backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10% of his or her body weight. A heavier backpack will cause your child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders, by the straps. If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child's teacher and ask if your child could leave the heaviest books at school. • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.
Chiropractic Care Can Help... If you or your child experiences any pain or discomfort resulting from backpack use, call your doctor of chiropractic. Doctors of chiropractic are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and will use a gentler type of treatment for children. In addition, doctors of chiropractic can also prescribe exercises designed to help children develop strong muscles, along with instruction in good nutrition, posture and sleeping habits. v
• A backpack with individualized compartments helps in positioning the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child's back. • Bigger is not necessarily better. The more room there is in a backpack, the more your child will carry-and the heavier the backpack will be. • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps. Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, as well as low-back pain. • Wide, padded straps are very important. Non-padded straps are uncomfortable, and can dig into your child's shoulders. • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child's body. • The ACA recommends using roller packs (or backpacks on wheels) cautiously and on a limited basis by only those students who are not physically able to carry a backpack.

ocal chefs preparing signature dishes, fine local wines, live entertainment and dancing is the recipe for a fabulous night on the town that will also help support the fight against cancer. The Main Course Dinner and Auction is a food-centered fundraiser. It brings together top regional chefs and restaurants showcasing their culinary masterpieces, a generous sampling of fine wines, fabulous entertainment and a lively auction featuring one-of-akind packages. All of this makes for a perfect recipe to help raise important dollars for the American Cancer Society. In 2014, it is estimated that more than 1,500 people will die each day from cancer. In Kentucky alone more than 23,690 people are expected to be stricken with the disease and 9,560 people will lose their battle with this potentially deadly disease. The statistics are startling: Sadly, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and one of every three deaths is from cancer. Since 1990, nearly 17 million new cases of cancer have been diagnosed. In the United States, men have a one in two lifetime risk of developing cancer; for women the risk is one in three.
Dinner and Dancing The Main Course Dinner and Auction represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. This year’s Main Course Dinner and Auction will take place on Thursday, August 14, at 6 p.m. inside the historic Irvin Cobb Hotel Event Center located in downtown Paducah. chefs from the Country Club of Paducah, Shandies, Artisan Kitchen, Heavenly Cakes and Café, Occasions Unlimited, Whaler’s Catch, and Ristorante di Fratelli will perform their culinary artwork, and Purple Toad Winery will offer tastings of their top wines. The Paducah Jazz Ensemble’s Little Big Band, under the direction of Ron Roberts, will be back to entertain and provide music for our guests listening pleasure and dancing. The group made its debut at last year’s event and was immediately asked to return because of the amazing job they did.
Unique Live Auction Items The evening will also offer numerous items to bid on during both a silent and live auction. These include signed memorabilia including a script from the TV show Breaking Bad, books by famed basketball coach John Calipari and suspense writer Dean Koontz, CD’s from Sheryl Crow and Michael Bolton and packages of private dinners prepared by personal chefs. These are just a few of the wide variety of unique items that will be sure to please all those who attend. The Main Course Dinner and Auction gives those who may not participate in Relay For Life a chance to still support the
fight against cancer while having a great night out. Banks, insurance companies, medical offices and many other businesses participate in the event and often invite their clients and business associates to join them and participate in the evening’s festivities. Tickets are $40 each, which includes meal, wine and entertainment. Corporate tables are also available starting at $500. It’s going to be a fantastic evening of food and fun: One that will also support a great cause of funding cancer research as well as promoting prevention and early detection education. The funds will also be used to develop and maintain the programs, and services offered through the American Cancer Society that assist cancer patients and caregivers with some of the issues they face during their cancer experience. To purchase tickets to The Main Course Dinner and Auction contact the Paducah ACS office at (270) 444-0384 or visit them at 3140 Parisa Drive, located behind Banterra Bank on Jackson Street in Paducah For more information about the programs and services offered by the American Cancer society please visit their website at www.cancer.org. v

round this time last year, I found myself downtown on a hot August day, surrounded by close to twelve kids of a variety of ages. I had glitter on all five fingers, glue under my nails, and some added cosmetic effects such as strands of multicolored yarn and marker streaks on my palms. The kids and I were all undergoing the rigorous demands of making a paper bag puppet! Each puppet was given as much attention and care as you would expect from an artistic masterpiece. The highlight came when the kids posed for a picture with their masterpiece. 30 • August2014 www.purchasefamilymag.com

participants and members of the public clamored for a fair this year, (try refusing a crowd of glitter covered school children.) We are pleased to announce that you can mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Kids Creative Arts Street Fair on the Square!
Why the arts? Parents often wonder how to encourage creativity in their children. One of the best ways is to take them to events and let them experience the arts in a tangible, every day setting. “The arts give kids the tools to become creative adults with the ability to adapt, problem solve, collaborate and express themselves," said April Cochran, Education Director at MHT. Even though it might seem overly simplistic, to connect great plays, novels and beautiful music with something like making a hand puppet or painting a ceramic, but an interest in painting often does start with something as simple as doodling at a young age.
The sponsors and activities Among the participating organizations are the National Quilt Museum, the Carson Center, the Yeiser Art Center, Harmony Road School of Music, Maiden Alley Cinema, the River Discovery Center, the Paducah School of Art and

Design, The Rhythm Factory, Paducah Symphony, WKCTC Clemens Fine Arts Center and others! The activities will be numerous and appropriate for multiple age groups, including bracelet braiding, live interactive music on the Carson Center lawn, the magic of art booth, puppets, a magician with interactive illusions, making your own musical instrument, introduction to storyboarding, and interactive dance instruction. You can participate in tiedying a t-shirt, dress up in a costume photo booth, make your own sound effect in a sound effect booth, and score ice cream from the Paducah Bank Wow Wagon! Of course, Purchase Area Family Magazine will also be present with their ever-popular paper-bag puppets! All of these activities are sounding boards for creative thought, drama, and music. The street fair will also include a short performance by Market House Theatre’s teen comedy troupe, HA! as well as free admission to the Market House Museum. “It’s basically a potpourri of activities,” Cochran admitted with a laugh. “Each participating organization's booth will feature a hands-on experience for people of all ages. Even the performances will have interactive elements - the improv comedy, the preschool Play Time show, the musicians - nothing will be a passive experience. All of the organizations are working together to celebrate the arts by involving kids in that celebration." The fair will be held on Saturday, August 16th from 10am to 2pm on 2nd Street in downtown Paducah. The road will be closed to traffic for the event. Activities will take place on the street and the Carson Center lawn, as well on the MHT’s main stage and studio theatre which will also be open. Why Grooming Your Pet Matters
H
ave you ever watched your dog roll on the ground, lick her coat or chew at a mat on her fur? These are her ways of keeping clean. Grooming is an essential part of taking care of your fur family and there are many direct health benefits from having your dog or cat groomed regularly. The ASPCA recommends bathing your dog every couple of months or so, but your pet may require more frequent grooming in the summertime. Bathing keeps their skin, hair, pads, eyes and ears clean and helps to prevent many health issues. Just as you wouldn’t go a week without brushing your hair, brushing your pet regularly is critical and also helps to keep them clean; it removes dead hair, dirt and other debris from the coat. It also allows you and or your groomer to find suspicious lumps, bumps, or skin disorders. Early detection and a check up with your vet can be crucial to a positive outcome and keep them healthy and happy for a long life with you. “I often get asked why grooming a dog costs more than a human hair cut,” said Carol Nielsen, owner and groomer at
Carolyn’s Mobile Pet Grooming. Nielsen has over 23 years of experience grooming animals and works hard to educate her clients about their fur family. “Try looking at it in human terms,” suggested Nielsen. “How much would you pay for a bath, haircut, blow-dry manicure, pedicure, and a massage? Especially if the client, wiggled a lot and might try to snap or bite you! Grooming a dog, especially the larger breeds or those with a lot of hair can take literally hours.” “Animals just feel better when they are cleaned and bathed,” said Nielsen. “Grooming is great for bonding time and can help to calm your dog. A good groomer can show you how to brush your dog properly in between grooming appointments: They are a partner in your dog’s goods health.”
Practice makes perfect Just as you would normally train your dog to sit and walk on a leash, without pulling and straining, it’s a good idea to train them to cooperate with the bathing and grooming process. Opinions vary, but most pet care professional like to see a new puppy introduced to a groomer at around 10-12 weeks of age. While they may not need to have a trim, it’s a good idea to get them used to a new place with different sounds and smells. The more exposure they have, the easier it gets. The old saying, “practice makes perfect,” is very

true when it comes to dogs and grooming. The younger you start, the easier it will be in the long run for your pet.
All dogs need grooming “Dogs don’t need more than an inch or so of hair to stay warm,” advised Nielsen. “Many dogs grow an undercoat. If that undercoat isn’t attended to and brushed out the dog’s hair will mat and they can get skin irritation. Matted hair pulls and causes great discomfort and pain. It also creates a breeding environment for fleas, ticks and their nests. The grooming process reduces shedding and improves appearance. Dogs with a smooth, short coat, like that of a Chihuahua, Boxer or Basset Hound, may only need to be brushed once a week. Dogs with thicker, denser fur that is prone to matting need attention every few days. If your dog has a long, luxurious coat, such as that of a Yorkshire Terrier, she'll need daily attention. A long-haired dog such as a Collie's or an Afghan hound must be thoroughly combed through and the hair trimmed around the hocks and feet.
Dealing with a double coat “Some breeds have a true double coat,” said Nielsen. “Corgi’s, for instance can lose up to 100 feet of hair a day! There are some great tools available for brushing dogs
with thick and double coats such as the FURminator hair removal and de-shedding tool. The FURminator is actually more of a de-shedding tool than it is an actual dog brush. It utilizes a patented design to quickly and easily remove up to 80% of unwanted pet hair. Your groomer can show you how to use them effectively to help with shed control. Breeds of dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese and Shih Tzu’s will grow long hair on the face, mouth and eyes, and if left untrimmed this hair can become matted with food particles and saliva. In addition, studies have shown that dogs with hair that is frequently in their eyes have a greater chance of developing eye infections, glaucoma and cataracts. Strategic trimming of the hair around the eyes is aesthetically pleasing, and helps to prevent health problems down the road.
Summer heat Dogs cool off by panting and by air circulating around and through their pads. Long hair impairs that ability. Many long hair pets tend to grow excessive amounts of hair between their feet and paw pads, as well as around the perianal (anus) area. Excessive hair in these places can lead to hygiene problems, tangling of hair, accumulation of dirt and stickers in the hair, and even cause problems defecating and urinating. Your groomer may trim around these areas, helping to prevent problems before they can develop. Professional groomers such as Nielsen often recommend products containing natural products. “Natural grooming products have ingredients that you can read and don’t have to look up,” explained Nielsen. “Aloe vera and canola oil makes an incredible difference to the condition of your pet’s skin and coat, and how it looks.” If your dog has long hair, or is prone to tangles or a dry coat, Nielsen recommends a coat conditioner as a second step to the bathing process. Just as with human hair, conditioners can help to manage the hair and make it softer, allowing for mats and tangles to be more easily removed. When conditioning is professionally applied it will last for four to six weeks.
Special breeds, special needs Dogs with loose facial skin or wrinkles, such as Shar Peis and Pugs, will need special attention. To prevent dirt and bacteria from causing irritation and infection, clean the folds with damp cotton. If your dog has long or droopy ears, you should check them weekly. Your groomer will remove wax and dirt from your pet's ears. They will also remove any excess hair leading into the ear canal: There are special hair removers that allow them to carefully pull one strand at a time.

Feet, nails and pads
Anal glands
Many dogs don’t like to have their front legs and feet manipulated; it is their first line of defense. This can make grooming those parts of the body and clipping their nails very difficult. Dogs can be trained to relax and cooperate during grooming and nail clipping; it’s just like any other part of their training. If you can teach them to ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ you can most likely teach them to lay still and cooperate while their nails are trimmed.
Anal glands are the most neglected part of your dog's body. As they fill up, some can burst causing very expensive surgery and unnecessary pain. A professional grooming includes expressing these glands. Your groomer will also clear your dog's anus of hair. This guarantees your dog's excretions and stool will not stick and be carried indoors and your dog will stay fresher and cleaner longer.
Outdoor dogs need a bath too! Most dogs and cats don’t naturally wear down their nails fast enough to keep up with nail growth, and as a result need regular nail trimming in order to keep their nails at the optimum length. Long and overgrown nails force your dog to walk on the sides of their pads which causes pain and this can contribute to arthritis in the paws, legs and hips. Your pet’s body has been designed to walk with his pads on the floor, not the nails. If your dogs’ nails are touching the ground, his nails are too long. If you can hear the nails clicking on the floor, they are too long. Your groomer will trim your pet’s nails, and their skill and experience can often get them shorter than you can at home. “I often use a dremel tool,” said Nielsen. “It helps to further shorten the nails and blunt the edges to eliminate those sharp, newly cut nail scratches!”
“I volunteer my time to groom dogs at our local shelters,” explained Nielsen. “Some of them haven’t been groomed at all and are initially scared. I place the dogs in the bath tub and although they may fuss at first, after 10-15 minutes they start to feel so much better. Once they are clean and brushed, and their fur is cut they are a changed dog. Just imagine taking a shower after being dirty for a year!” Regular grooming of all pets can help contribute to longer, healthier lives. While frequency will depend on your pet’s breed, coat type or lifestyle, regular grooming sessions will help your pet to remain a healthy, clean, well-behaved companion for you. v
Dog breath! Some dogs and cats have a heavy “dog” odor and may also have bad breath. Your groomer can help with that problem too. Teeth brushing helps keep teeth clean in between routine dental cleanings and helps prevent plaque and gingivitis. “I enjoy educating my pet owners on taking better care of their animals and their diet etc.,” said Nielsen. “More and more of my customers are getting educated about the food they feed their animals and how it affects the coat, skin, teeth, hair, and of course their breath.

D
eborah and Jeff Brandon, owners of Alert Alarm Systems, Inc., have a reason to celebrate during 2014. This entrepreneurial couple are the owners of Alert Alarms Systems and this is their 30th year of serving the residents and businesses of western Kentucky. Alert Alarms began in 1984 and within three years the company had grown and expanded, adding an in-house 24-hour central monitoring station. Currently, Alert Alarm Systems monitor over 2,000 accounts from their office. Deborah recalls how Alert Alarm Systems first started. “I had saved money for college, but instead of using these funds, I accepted scholarships and worked my way through school. I had a friend who was a graphic artist and, as I could type, we exchanged work; it was sort of a barter system. I typed

her term paper and she designed our logo. We decided to turn the company initials into the shape of a flying eagle. The funds I saved became our start-up capital for the business.” Deborah says this work ethic as a college student continues to serve her today. “My husband and I started the business when we were very young. At first, Jeff was a bit nervous about making calls and venturing out. Two of our friends became Jeff’s partners and served as mentors until we could make it on our own. Then, we bought them out and became the sole owners of Alert Alarm Systems.”
Local Business Makes a Difference Being a local business, Alert Alarm Systems is different from
national franchises. When Alert Alarm Systems first opened in Paducah, there was only one other small security company. Today, there are numerous national companies. “Our business is different,” says Deborah. “As part of the Paducah community, we participate in the community by being members of local organizations and serving on boards. Married for over 32 years, we live and have raised our two daughters in this area. This is home for us. Customer satisfaction is vital to our success. Our motto is, ‘treat the customer as you would like to be treated.’ Due to the competition from national franchises, we advertise. But for years, we build our clientele through word-of-mouth.” Today the company has ten full-time employees and three part-time. Approximately 60 percent of their customers are residential properties and the remaining 40 percent are commercial businesses. In additional to security systems to protect against invasion of property, the alarm systems they provide help guard against theft: Commercial customers need a security system that keeps both their customers and employees honest.
Half the Cost For their customers price is always a consideration. Precisely because they are not part of a national chain and do not have to pay franchise fees or contribute to national marketing efforts, Alert Alarms Systems, Inc., provides the same services for about one-half the monthly cost of national companies! Stop in, or call, and wish the Brandon’s a Happy 30th Anniversary! Deborah and Jeff look forward to many more years of serving Paducah and the surrounding area. Alert Alarms Systems, Inc., is located at 2715 Olivet Church Road Suite 2, in Paducah. Phone 270-554-7147 or call toll free 800-489-1236. Or visit them at www.alertalarm.net for additional information about the company. You can also email Deborah and/or Jeff at info@alertalarm.net. Keeping Technology Current One of the challenges of a security company is keeping up with technology. Electronics are constantly changing. “To stay competitive in this market, we must keep ourselves educated about current technology. We not only train our employees as technology changes, we train customers to use the equipment they purchase and upgrade. A few years ago, customers had a landline phone for our equipment. Today, this can be done through a cellular, landline, and the internet. Now you can view the status of your security system or camera system directly from any computer, smart phone or tablet. Technology has changed the way we live and the way we make a living.
A Full Line of Services As a full service, low voltage contractor, Alert Alarms Systems specializes in residential and commercial security and fire alarms systems. This is the core of their successful business. However with the demand for additional security systems and to keep up with the demand for the latest technology, Alert Alarms Systems has expanded and diversified into other areas. These include: • Industrial/large commercial fire alarm (Life Safety) systems, • Commercial, • Closed circuit TV systems, • Home automation systems, • Data systems wiring, • And access control systems. ‘This article is paid advertising and the information contained therein is provided by the featured individual or business. 80,000 Pounds of Tug!

A
ugust is filled with outstanding community events including the hugely popular Big Brown Truck Pull. “This will be our 6th annual Big Brown Truck Pull which is a fundraising event for Special Olympics Kentucky (SOKY),” said Scottye Williams, member of the event organizing committee. “The money that we raises stays in Western Kentucky and benefits the athletes from this area with 86 • August2014 www.purchasefamilymag.com
sports and training programs.” The funds raised through this event are essential to continuation of local SOKY programs. “We pay for uniforms, equipment and fees for state and regional tournaments,” explained Williams. “We assist with lodging and many other expenses throughout the year.” For those involved it is more than a fundraising effort. “The Big Brown Truck Pull is a fun event that not only brings the community together but raises awareness about the special needs population in our community.” Everyone has a different reason for wanting to make a difference and participating in the event. “A lot of people get involved because they have a child or loved one in the program,’’ said Williams. William’s husband was an avid bowler and saw a need to help when he learned that
a friend’s child needed a bowling coach. He went on to take over the bowling program a couple years ago and then proceeded to get involved with the Big Brown Truck Pull.
Not as hard as you think! The event is not as hard as it sounds. “A lot of people do not know what it consists of and they think you have to be a big weightlifter or bodybuilder!” said Williams. “But this is really a teamwork event - a fun day to test your strength against an 80,000 UPS semi! If everybody knew how much fun it was to pull the big brown truck everybody would be doing it.” There is a sense of camaraderie when you participate. “It is an excellent bonding activity for corporate offices, church clubs or other groups,” said Williams. “As with many things in life, if you work together on a team it makes things so much easier and that is what I want people to know; that when you work together you can even move a big brown truck. So how about getting a group of your friends together and forming a team!” “Everybody that has ever done the truck pull absolutely loves it. You feel good knowing that you are helping an intellectually challenged child give sports a try. “At the opening ceremonies every team will have the opportunity to decorate their own team flag and introduce their colors during a roll call of teams. The adult teams are usually made up of a team of 15 people and there are male, female, coed (minimum of 6 women) and youth divisions. The event has been scaled for participants of all ages and in the youth division, (ages 12 and under), teams of ten members are invited to pull a UPS mail truck instead of a semi.

Bigger than ever “This year we are expecting a record crowd,” said Williams. “The event is being held on August 2, 2014 to coincide with the final Saturday of the Paducah’s ‘Live on the River’ concert series. We are collaborating with the city and providing a whole evening event beginning with musical entertainment and then street entertainment, food vendors and the Big Brown Truck Pull. The pull takes place in front of the flood wall and there’s plenty of room to sit and cheer on your favorite team. In addition to the pulling, there will be a family fun zone that will have food and games and activities throughout the evening. Teams can show up, pull and leave, or make a full night of it and stay to see who wins the big prizes. There are fantastic sponsors this year. “Our presenting sponsors are WPSD, News Channel 6, radio station WKYQ and Paducah Parks Services,” said Williams. The event fills up quickly so you will want to plan ahead. “Adult groups can register for $50 per team member. Youth teams are $30 per member,” explained Williams. “Once you have registered and paid your fee all you have to do is show up and pull! Corvettes on the River
P
aducah families should mark their calendars for the 13th annual Corvettes on the River, a yearly tradition sponsored by the Four Rivers Corvette Club. The corvette is considered the longest-running, continually produced, sports car in the world and in Paducah it has an opportunity to shine. Kentucky holds special significance in the history of the car as Bowling Green, Kentucky is the home of the corvette assembly plant and museum. Corvettes are known for their cutting edge design and award winning technology. You won’t want to miss this chance to experience a part of history with America’s favorite high performance vehicle! This year’s car show and festivities will take place on September 12, 2014 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the riverfront in downtown Paducah. “It is always the second week of September and we have over 200 cars on display,” Kerry Brandon, member and ex-president of the Four Rivers Corvette Club, told me. “It’s usually a beautiful day to view the corvettes. Members of the public can come and view the cars, vote for their favorite and play some car related games. We have judges from the corvette factory who will judge the show and we have a lot of trophies to award for different classes. There is no entrance fee but people that come usually make a donation because that is what it is all about. Our silent auctions will be full of items donated by local businesses.”
If you wish to bring your corvette down to be a part of the event, please plan to register. “The corvette car show is open to any corvette with any kind of modifications,” explained Corvette club member Garry Hicks. “You can register early or register from 8 a.m. until noon the day of the show. Judging will begin after registration has ended and there will be door prizes, a silent auction and music with a DJ. We will have the Bowling Green Corvette Museum and some other local vendors selling Corvette items and car memorabilia. Anybody that even remotely likes cars will have a good time.”
Join the club! The Four Rivers Corvette Club stays active year-round but this is one of their most recognized functions. “My first night in the club, everyone made me feel like I had been

there for years,” said Hicks. “It is such a nice group of people that do good work. We try to do stuff that will provide a benefit for local charities. I just bought my sixth corvette but you can join the club whether you have a corvette or not! We have a monthly meeting and we take trips during the summer months.” The club is still discussing which charity will benefit through this event. “This year there will probably be more than one charity that we give to,” said Hicks. Whether you are a corvette enthusiast or just looking for something different to do with your family, you are sure to enjoy Corvettes on the River. “Just come down to the riverfront,” Urged Brandon. “Plan on seeing some beautiful cars and having a good time on a nice Saturday downtown.” It is also a great chance to see all that our area has to offer. “The stores and restaurants will all be open so people can go shop, eat and enjoy themselves downtown, rain or shine! Jeff Parker Candidate for Second District State Senator
I
am a lifelong native of Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky is my home. After graduating from Reidland High School, I then attended Paducah Community College for two years. For the next 22 years I was employed by United Parcel Service, after which I have been a small business operator for the past 15 years. I currently reside in the Lone Oak area as I have for the past 27 years. I am married to Lisa Cathey Parker. We have four grown sons and six grandchildren. We are members of Highland Cumberland Presbyterian Church where I serve as an active elder. I enjoy spending time with my family and helping organizations in the community that serve the needy. • I will work to promote all of Western Kentucky by maximizing economic growth through the use of our roadways, railways and waterways. • These and other assets will create jobs which will, in turn, produce viable wages for the hardworking families of Western Kentucky. • We need to work to reverse the trend of educating our

children and grandchildren only to see them have to relocate for employment. They deserve to live in Western Kentucky with good employment opportunities. I am, and will continue to be, a small business owner and a small business advocate. By being a small business owner, I am a job creator. I understand what it’s like to make a payroll. I will work to reverse the trend of majority funding going to projects in the ‘golden triangle’. We have to make sure we are getting the same funding for projects in Western Kentucky. As State Senator of the Second District, I will reach out to both sides of the aisle to make sure the district is well represented. When making decisions, my first question will always be, “What will the impact be on the people of the Second District?” It must be a positive impact. Our State Seal says, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” It is time to unite Western Kentucky and send a small business owner, a job creator and a true Western Kentucky family man to Frankfort as your Second District State Senator. v

ASK THE PROS
by: Leeann Ellingsworth, Esthetician and Owner - Skin & Body Solutions
Skin Care 101
I
t’s true. Some people are just born with good skin. Just as eye color and the length of your nose are inherited traits, good skin is also partly genetic. But rest assured if you were not one of the lucky ones born with a beautiful flawless complexion, there is still a lot you can do to improve the look and texture of your skin, and control acne breakouts.
Zits! Whether it’s an occasional pimple or a severe breakout, most all teens are affected by acne at some point. Acne generally begins between the ages of ten and thirteen and can last throughout the teen years if it is not controlled. There are several types of acne with multiple causes and triggers. A process of elimination approach is usually taken when attempting to isolate and treat different types of acne. Because everyone has a different chemical makeup, a ‘one size fits all’ approach to acne treatment often does not work. Often several different regimens must be tried before a solution is found.
You are what you eat! This is probably the most accurate statement of all time. Recent research suggests that it’s not

what we slather on our skin that matters most but what we put in our mouth. Researchers are revisiting the connections between diet and acne: A growing body of evidence suggests that eating a diet rich in high glycemic index foods (sugars and simple carbohydrates) is a major contributing factor in the production of acne. In addition to sugar and simple carbohydrates, many acne sufferers have seen drastic improvement in their skin when eliminating dairy products from their diet. We have all seen and heard the latest craze of the “gluten-free diet. While most people choosing the gluten free path do so because of digestive reasons, a serendipitous side effect is glowing, clear, healthy skin. While most people will notice a rather quick response and reduction in acne when eliminating possible food triggers, be sure and give the dietary change several weeks to months before giving up on your healthy diet choices. Keep in mind when eliminating simple sugars, refined carbohydrates, dairy, whey and gluten products, to be sure and replace those foods with fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, lean meats and lots and lots of water! People who eat more veggies (containing more antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds) have less

acne. Make sure you get your 5 - 9 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables every day. Certain foods have been linked to improvements in many of the underlying causes of acne and can help correct it. These include fish oil, turmeric, ginger, green tea, nuts, dark purple and red foods such as berries, green foods like dark green leafy vegetables, and omega 3-eggs. Improving your diet is one of the simplest, cheapest ways to kick start your acne control regimen.
Ditch the Stress! Stress and lack of a good skincare regimen are also included in the list of acne triggers. Managing one’s stress level can be amazingly difficult with our busy lives, but it is a

contributing factor. How many new brides have been affected with acne breakouts just shortly before their big day? Like this, some stresses simply can’t be avoided, but how we manage them can be a true asset to our outward skin appearance. Learning to manage stress levels by incorporating meditation, yoga and time management skills into our daily routines can help keep stress acne breakouts to a minimum.
Sweat and acne Teens and adults alike that are involved in regular exercise or sports have an increased chance of experiencing acne. Many times when acne is prevalent on the forehead, back and chest, it can be contributed to sweat, dirt and bacteria clogging the pores. Cleansing the skin after physical activi-
ty is very important. However, with constant cleansing we take a risk of drying the skin out too much. Most of us grew up with the idea that we needed to dry up the acne and never use moisturizer! This unfortunately is not accurate. Yes, the oil on the surface of the skin does need to be removed and pores need to be kept clean and dry. However, our skin cannot produce moisture, it can only produce sebum, or oil. When we consistently dry the skin out it sends receptors to the brain saying, “We’re dry! Send oil!” Thus starts the vicious cycle of more oil production which leads to congested pores and more breakouts. Moisturizing is a very delicate matter with acneic skin. While it is of the utmost importance to keep the skin hydrated at all times, if you are prone to oily skin, you need to choose an “oil-free” moisturizer rather than a thick heavy moisturizer. Many people find that adding an oilfree moisturizer to their skin care regimen reduces the amount of oil the body makes and their acne breakouts subside greatly.
Hormones Perhaps the most common cause of acne teens is hormones. Hormones released at the onset of puberty are responsible for oily, breakout-prone skin. These hormones stimulate the skin’s oil glands, creating an overproduction of oil that causes clogged pores and breakouts. A good skincare regimen with regular cleansing facials, including extractions, is the first step in keeping oil production to a minimum and slowing down the hormonal acne process. For females, try replacing thick heavy oil containing makeup products with lighter healthy mineral makeup that doesn’t clog pores. Don’t forget to clean your makeup brushes weekly and throw out old sponges, and makeup applicators on a regular basis. Cleaning cellphones and changing pillow cases also helps to control acne causing bacteria. The majority of mild to moderate acne can be improved with regular cleansing facials from your esthetician and healthy diet, and lifestyle changes. When these treatments are not enough, severe cases of cystic acne will need to be treated by a dermatologist with prescription medications. You don’t have to wait until January 1 to make a new resolution. With the start of the new school year, why not implement a new regimen of healthy diet and lifestyle choices v and acne disappear! www.purchasefamilymag.com August2014 • 95
