REGENERATION CENTERS
A Brand New Concept in Healthcare
O
ne year ago, Ray Thompson was sitting at home contemplating suicide. Christmas had been difficult once again, and he felt he had no reason to celebrate the new year. An injury to his back eight years ago had left him in excruciating pain, even after surgery. He could barely walk or sit up and he was fighting an addiction to hydrocodone. His family was in shambles. Then, in what he calls a miracle, he saw an IMAC (Integrated Medicine & Chiropractic) Regeneration Centers’ commercial about treatment for back pain using stem cells and platelet-rich-plasma. “I couldn’t believe it,” Thompson says. “It was exactly what I had been hoping and waiting for. I told my wife, ‘I am calling these people.’ I want to know I have exhausted all of my options before I ever let someone cut on me again.” Stories of patients such as Thompson are very common at IMAC Regeneration Centers. Patients come to the clinics, hoping for a solution to their medical conditions that is different than anything they have unsuccessfully tried in the past. They may not know exactly what a regenerative clinic is, but they have heard enough to know the treatments do not involve surgery or prescription pain medication, and that is enough to at least listen to what the doctors at IMAC have to say. After an evaluation, each patient meets one-on-one with an IMAC doctor and receives their customized treatment plan, designed to repair damage and increase their quality of life. “No patient is exactly the same,” says IMAC Founder, Dr. Matt Wallis. “Our goal is to take all the time necessary to get to know our patients, thoroughly evaluate their medical issues, and design a treatment plan that will be a long-term solution to their condition.”

IMAC Regeneration Center welcomes Dr. Robert Garneau
IMAC Regeneration Centers was formed because of the need for options in healthcare that do not involve surgery or prescription pain medication. This unique healthcare model involves the combination of regenerative medicine, physical therapy and chiropractic. “Each of these disciplines falls short on their own,” explains Wallis. “Physical therapy and chiropractic can’t grow new tissue and regenerative medicine can’t rehabilitate, but when combined, they have the potential to repair the damage and accomplish what cannot be done alone. We are not trying to just make someone feel better, our job is to correct the underlying issue.” Take Thompson for example. When he visited IMAC for the first time last January, he met with a team of doctors that performed an examination, analyzed MRIs and X-rays and listened for as long as Thompson needed to tell his full story. “When you have highly trained medical doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors working together to find a solution, the treatment protocol can be personalized to achieve the highest possible outcome,” says Wallis. In Thompson’s situation, he was prescribed a treatment combination of stem cells, platelet-rich-plasma, decompression, chiropractic adjustments and customized physical therapy. The results have completely changed his life. “When I came to IMAC a year ago,” Thompson says, “On a scale of zero to 10, I was a zero. My family was on zero. Now I am at a nine and my family is happy again for the first time in eight years.” IMAC’s new concept in healthcare started in Western Kentucky, but has expanded to multiple markets including, St. Louis, Nashville and Lexington, Kentucky will open this spring. The IMAC clinics in
Chesterfield and St. Peters, Missouri, are branded from a partnership with St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer, Ozzie Smith: Ozzie Smith IMAC Regeneration Centers. Boston Red Sox pitcher, David Price, joined in the expansion to Brentwood and Murfreesboro, Tennessee: David Price IMAC Regeneration Centers. Just last month, IMAC named former University of Kentucky All-American Tony Delk, as the headliner for Lexington, Kentucky: Tony Delk IMAC Regeneration Center. IMAC will announce further expansions in the first quarter of 2018. Wallis, along with Neurosurgeon, Sean McDonald developed the IMAC regenerative clinic concept of treating health conditions with the blended approach of regenerative medicine, physical therapy and chiropractic. McDonald has pioneered multiple treatment protocols utilizing stem cells and platelet-richplasma, including the Delta Spine Procedure which uses innovative technology to reposition and heal a herniated or bulging disc without surgery or prescription pain medication. “Most patients come to us for help when other treatments have failed,” says McDonald. “They are sometimes in more pain from the surgery than they were before. My hope is that people start at IMAC when they have a health issue. We can help a patient potentially avoid years of

After regenerative medicine treatments at IMAC, Ray Thompson has returned to his passion of playing the drums. Eight years ago, he lost the ability to play after a devastating back injury and addiction to opioids.

unnecessary pain, surgery and prescription pain medication if they begin seeking answers at IMAC first.” IMAC of Western Kentucky welcomed long-time Paducah physician, Dr. Robert Garneau, in 2017. As a Board Certified Interventional Radiologist with over 30 years of experience, he was a perfect addition to the IMAC medical team. “We are so proud to have Dr. Garneau as part of our IMAC medical team,” said IMAC partner, Dr. Jason Brame. “He brings over 30 years of experience in detecting disease processes through radiology, and his expertise in needle-guided procedures is ideally suited for transferring stem cells and PRP.” Garneau finds the work environment and ability to collaborate with other physicians to be a large part of the tremendous outcomes patients experience. “Dr. McDonald and I have recently pioneered a new regenerative protocol for neuropathy and are already seeing incredible results. I believe by combining our experience and knowledge, we are able to achieve the best results possible for our patients.”
Dr. Matt Wallis Chiropractor & IMAC Founder
“I love working at IMAC,” says Garneau. “We are changing lives. I have seen people that have lived in pain for 10 or 20 years and after treatment, it’s completely gone. I have seen first-hand how my family has benefited from regenerative
medicine. After just two treatments, my son’s asthma improved dramatically. My cousin was treated with PRP and stem cells for restrictive lung disease and went from not being able to walk a block to walking four blocks the next day. The improvements I have seen have been remarkable.” IMAC Regeneration Centers is different from any other medical clinic in the United States. For this reason, people travel from as far as Alaska and California for their innovative treatments. Recognized on the 2017 INC. 5000 list of Fastest Growing American Companies, and on Silicon Review’s 50 Smartest Companies list, IMAC is quickly becoming a household name. Despite the national recognition, Wallis says patients are the primary way the news is spread. “People are looking for hope and for doctors who will listen. They want real solutions, not medicine and definitely not surgery. We strive to provide the most innovative technology, the highest caliber physicians and a team of employees who truly care about each and every person that walks into our clinics,” says Wallis. “Our patients tell their friends and family that IMAC is the place where they can find hope of a better life. The biggest reward we will ever receive is when our patients refer their loved ones to us for help.” Ray Thompson and his family were able to celebrate the holiday season with joy and laughter this year. What was once a life of pain and regret, has transformed into a path of healing and a positive outlook on life. “If someone reads this and they feel like I did,” says Thompson. “They have gone to doctor after doctor with no help and have gotten no hope – please know that there is real help available. It was a good day when I first talked to the doctors at IMAC. They have never let me down from the minute I walked into that door.”

Eagle Watch Weekends
T
he bald eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. These regal birds aren’t really bald, but their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolatebrown body and wings. Look for them soaring in solitude, chasing other birds for their food, or gathering by the hundreds in winter. Once endangered by hunting and pesticides, bald eagles have flourished under protection. A unique Kentucky State Park tradition – Eagle Watch Weekends – will be offered once again in January and February 2017.
“Eagle Watch Weekends offer a great opportunity for participants to experience this success story firsthand,” said Geoff Roberts, a conservation educator with the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “Folks can typically expect to see large numbers of eagles because in addition to the high number of resident eagles that live there year round, many migratory eagles from the northern reaches of the country spend their winters in the Land Between the Lakes area.” The chance of seeing bald eagles in much greater than it used to be. “To date, we have more bald eagles nesting in Kentucky than at
Beautiful Birds of Prey
For four decades, the Kentucky State Parks have offered Eagle Watch Weekends; a chance to view the eagles from land and water while learning about this national symbol ,and other wildlife. The park system will sponsor this wildlife-watching opportunity as bald eagles gather around the major lakes of western Kentucky looking for food. The park tours allow guests to observe and learn about these beautiful birds of prey. The tours take place at three state resort parks during weekends in January and February, on an excursion yacht and by van. They are led by state park naturalists and staff from the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

We are proud to be able to offer these opportunities to see what an amazing recovery the eagles have made.” Ruff said the Kentucky State Parks have “what I consider to be some of the most amazing classrooms in the state. Reading that the bald eagle has a wingspan of up to eight feet is pretty impressive, but seeing the bird soar above you with the sounds of Kentucky Lake all around you is an experience that brings that information to life.” Guests should bring warm clothes, rain gear and binoculars. These trips can take place under extreme weather conditions. The resorts offer lodges, cottages and restaurants. Registration is required for the Eagle Watch Weekends. Andrew Jackson, Native American Removal, & the Trail of Tears led by Professor of History James S. Humphreys Ph.D., MSU
The forced relocation of Native Americans was a serious issue long before Andrew Jackson ascended to the presidency in 1829. The issue culminated during Jackson’s presidency with his signing of the Indian Removal Act. Shortly after Jackson left office, the United States army forced the Cherokee tribe to move from Georgia to the Oklahoma Territory on what became known as the Trail of Tears. Humphreys presentation will include a brief history of Native American removal, a detailed analysis of the issue and an explanation of the events that led to the Trail of Tears. More specifically, it will focus on the attitudes toward removal by public figures, and will explain the impact of removal on the United States and the Cherokee nation. James S. Humphreys is a professor of history at Murray State University where he specializes in the history of the American South. Humphreys completed a Ph.D. in history in 2005 at Mississippi State University. He is the author of Francis Butler Simkins: A Life, published by the University of Florida Press in 2008. Humphreys also serves as co-editor of the Interpreting American History series, published by Kent State University Press.

Kentucky had one of the lowest rates of draft dodging in the nation, and the state increased its coal production by 50% during the war years. Overwhelmingly, the people of the Commonwealth set aside partisan interests and worked together to help the nation achieve victory in Europe. Based on Bettez’s book, Kentucky and the Great War: World War I on the Home Front, this presentation looks at the domestic side of World War I. Not only how Kentuckians rallied to support the war effort, but initial reactions to the war. He describes how the Kentucky Council of Defense and local county councils created, and led, Red Cross and Liberty Loan campaigns, as well as food and conservation efforts.

The Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern IL and Western KY presented by Kay Rippelmeyer, author of Giant City State Park & the Civilian Conservation Corps & The Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern Illinois The Civilian Conservation Corps was the beginning of the environmental movement in the country, as conservation measures were taught to all the enrollees and taken home with them. It was a radical experiment and the least criticized of all FDR’s New Deal programs. This program will illustrate the CCC camps, their physical and organizational structure, work projects, sports and educational programs, from 1933-1942. CCC camps were located in many small towns of every state, including southern Illinois and western Kentucky. The CCC was one of the government’s most popular programs and was a life saver for many families during the Great Depression.
Rippelmeyer retired from SIU in 2008 to finish two books that she had been researching since 1987. The first published in 2010 was Giant City State Park and the Civilian Conservation Corps. 4 Rivers Behavioral Health’s
New Drop-In Center: The Zone
F
our Rivers Behavioral Health (4rbh) is a private, not-for-profit agency. They provide integrated mental health, substance abuse and developmental disability services for consumers in Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Livingston, Marshall, and McCracken counties. For years, they has served western Kentucky with a variety of outreaches and programs. This January they are opening a drop-in center called The Zone as part of their outreach to young adults aged 16-21. The Zone is part of a new program they have launched called TAYLRD Transition Age Youth Launching Realized Dreams. This innovative idea is a drop-in center with a purpose. It’s a new way to reach out to these young adults who are struggling with mental health and/or substance use issues. The key to engaging these young people will be trained peer specialists. These are young people with behavioral health experience who are trained to support young people with behavioral health issues. They will be on hand to provide much needed services and supports to this at-risk population.
An After-School Home Base
The Zone will offer transition aged youth and young adults an after-school home base - a drug-free center that offers peer counseling and other behavioral health services. Through an appealing and relatable atmosphere, The Zone aims to provide a positive and empowering voice to help young adults through their recoveries. Their focus is on offering support that is relatable. These will include: • Help with employment and education issues • Career planning • Life skills • Medication assistance

Health care navigation, and Age specific and developmentally appropriate behavioral health services, including peer counseling.
Teamwork
This drop in center is was named The Zone by the youth involved in the process of developing TAYLRD. A member of the peer support team volunteered his art talents to paint art on the outside of the building, giving it a welcoming appeal. A team came together to renovate the whole building and prepare it to be transformed into The Zone. “Everyone goes through things in life that are hard to deal with,” explained Tyler Clark, who is one of The Zone’s Peer Support Specialists. “Sometimes you just need to talk to someone about it. This can be even harder than the events themselves, because you have to trust the person you are talking to and be confident that they will not gossip about your situation, or judge you.”
“The Zone will be a safe place for our youth to hangout,” said Sarah Puckett, Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program Manager for Four Rivers Behavioral Health. “It will be a drug free environment where this age group can access healthy coping skills and peer support. There will be events held to develop skills such as job seeking, cooking, health, and communication.” The Zone has a washer and dryer, TV, video games, full kitchen, small gym area, art center, basketball, virtual reality, and much more on site. These recreational activity options will assist the young adults in their recovery process.
Grand Opening
The Zone is located at 1609 Kentucky Avenue. The grand opening is scheduled for January 11th at 2pm. For more information about this and other programs at 4rbh, visit 4rbhyouthtreatment.org and follow the Facebook page at @FourRiversBH .
“Often, we find it easier to talk to someone who has gone through these similar situations - someone who has felt lost, hopeless, angry, resentful, sad, depressed, or suicidal. Dealing with other people can be hard and intimidating, but sometimes, dealing with ourselves and our own thought and feelings can be almost impossible especially alone.” “The good news is that you don’t have to be alone,” Clark continued. “I have been depressed and sad, I have lost and grieved loved ones, I have used and abused drugs, and alcohol, I have felt hopeless and I have attempted suicide. I have been there, and I want to help you get through whatever it is you are struggling with as well. Fight for yourself - you are worth it!”
A Safe Place
The Zone is designed to be a safe place, open to ages 16-25 from 3-6pm, Monday through Friday. (Appointments can also be made during the day.) It’s a place where these transition-age youth can easily access an array of high-quality, culturally and developmentally appropriate, youth-driven supports and services. These services are designed to help them achieve their goals and reach adulthood successfully. The youth do not have to sign up for services, but after their third visit they will be encouraged and to set a goal.

Eating
Holistically L
ast year, I made a promise to myself to eat well. By that I mean, I wanted to make better choices in the foods that I ate to improve my overall health. Well, I’m writing this article only days before my annual physical so I don’t know definitively if it worked. However, my gut tells me that I didn’t succeed this year in keeping my promise. It’s not that I made a lot of bad choices, in fact, I feel that my choices have for the most part been good for my body - with the exceptions of ice cream and beer (don’t judge). My failure was partially due to a foot injury that kept me from being as active as normally am. But the real failure was forgetting to improve the entire organism, namely me.
Improving the Entire Me
For years, I’ve heard that getting healthy involved eating right and exercise. That for the most part is correct but I wasn’t taking it far enough. I wasn’t trying to improve the entire Me. I wasn’t stretching myself mentally, spiritually, or physically. (Well I certainly wasn’t stretching enough physically which in part led to the foot injury, but I digress.) You may be asking what I mean at this point. Well the medical definition of holistic says “characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.” I’m not saying that I have a disease, but I know that certain things make me feel better and they have nothing to do with food. Looking at art, listening to music, reading a good book, playing with my dogs, or taking a walk almost always improve my mood. All these activities help lower my stress and some even yield the benefit of getting a little exercise. Basically, what I’m saying is that we should remember to make time for the things that we love so that it benefits each of us as a person.
Try New Things
Cooking is one of my passions, but like things you do often, you may lose interest or just get burned out. One way for me to stretch myself from a culinary perspective is to try new dishes. A few years ago, my resolution was to try one new dish a week and I’m going to revisit that again, but with a twist. This year the recipes must be healthy and colorful. They must appeal to all my senses and not just my taste buds. The real trick to eating healthy is to get the entire family on board. What do you prepare that the kids will eat and not turn up their noses when you say healthy? How about a Chipotle Chicken Quinoa Burrito Bowl or Zucchini Noodles with Avocado Pesto and Shrimp? Both these dishes are easy to prepare and don’t takes a lot of time. So, they may give you enough time to take that walk and play with the kids. Let 2018 be the year you eat healthy not forgetting to take some time for yourself. Live, Laugh, Love and Eat Well.

Don’t Forget These 5 Memory-Boosting Tips
M
emories capture the richness of life. But as we age, our ability to remember can slip, making it more difficult for us to function and to enjoy all that life has to offer. But memory problems don’t have to plague you in your later years. Below are five helpful tips for maintaining your memory in the New Year and beyond.
Boost Your Brain
plaques in the brain. This can hamper one’s memory over time and has even been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Great memory-guarding foods are those high in vitamins and low in saturated fats, such as fruits, vegetables and lean meats. The so-called Mediterranean diet” offers the perfect brain food tableau: fish, fruits, leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and moderate amounts of alcohol (particularly red wine).
Studies have shown that a great way to keep our memory sharp is to engage in new, exciting and challenging activities on a regular basis. You can tackle a crossword puzzle, dive into a thrilling novel, travel to another country, or simply take a new path while walking the dog. Embracing variety, change and newness will not only keep your life interesting and fun, it can also help you preserve your memory and brain function well into your senior years.
Nurture Better Nutrition
Maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet can help you keep your memory robust as you get older. Researches reveals that foods high in saturated fats and LDL (bad) cholesterol can lead to a buildup of

Exercise Regularly
•
Staying physically can help us stay mentally fit. A regular fitness routine improves blood flow to all parts of the body, especially the brain. But you don’t have to join a strenuous boot camp to strengthen and preserve your memory capacity. The National Institute of Health suggests that taking 40-minute walks and doing stretch exercises every day can heighten your memory and your ability to envision and plan for the future. Be sure to consult your physician before taking on any new or unusual workout routines.
Stay Social
Meeting friends for coffee or taking a walk with your grandkids can actually help delay or even prevent memory loss. Time with friends and family promotes feelings of well-being and comfort. This in turn reduces memory-eroding stress and also injects our lives with variety and keeps our minds engaged. So go ahead and have that extra cup of tea with your daughter, or other round of golf with your buddy. Its great way to make, and keep, awesome memories.
Sleep it off
According to the National Institutes of Health, your brain solidifies your memories during deep sleep, which leads to better recall and improved learning during the day. So, a night of bad sleep often equates to a day of annoying forgetfulness. You can treat poor sleeping habits in several ways:

Allow yourself time to wind down two hours before bed. Keep your bedroom dark and cool at night. •
Limit your exposure to the blue light of smartphones, iPads and computer screens before hitting the sheets. • It’s also recommended to end the day with less light and to start the day with more light to maintain a healthy sleep-wake cycle. Our memories make life more fulfilling. While we can’t stop the progression of time, we can help prevent memory problems from bringing us down by making small lifestyle changes in our everyday lives. After all, it’s often the little things that make the biggest differences in life - and the best memories.

Be a Friend to Land Between the Lakes
O
ur local lakes and waterways are a treasure for the Purchase Area. They provide wonderful recreation and outdoor activity opportunities, as well as contributing a large chunk of revenue to the area in the form of tourism - both local and national. Land Between The Lakes (LBL) is over 170,000 acres and the staff of this nationally recognized recreation area relies on many volunteers each year to keep it looking its best. Each year members of the public contribute tens of thousands of hours of service to LBL. Volunteer activities range from trail maintenance and cleanup, to support of special events, monitoring the Elk & Bison Prairie, and assisting with administrative work. Volunteering at Land Between the Lakes is a great way to have a meaningful and rewarding experience in the great outdoors.
What’s your passion?
Do you like native wildlife or play music? Do you want to help children appreciate nature? Are you a bird watcher or a gardener, or concerned about the environment? Do you like to hike or bike? Are you a history buff? Whatever your passion, you can bring it to the LBL recreation area as they need people of all ages and interests to help. It’s a great way to help keep this area running and supporting our economy while doing the things you love. LBL volunteers clear hundreds of miles of trails, picking up tons of shoreline trash, and help people and animals stay safe in the Elk & Bison Prairie. Volunteers take pictures at special events, photograph scenic views and wildlife as well as teaching visitors about animals and the environment at the Nature Station. “Our volunteers give us the help needed to provide amazing programs and service to our visitors,” said Emily Cleaver, Volunteer Coordinator at land Between The Lakes. “It also gives them the opportunity to give back to the community and their public lands.”

Volunteers help make the 1850s Working Farm experience real by showing visitors a simpler time. They teach folks how to sew quilts, preserve food, play old fashion music, raise heirloom crops, and care for the farm’s heritage animals. “We are always looking for new volunteers to help with photography, educational programs, Elk and Bison Prairie Bugle Corps, trail maintenance and so much more,” said Cleaver. “We have a variety of opportunities giving everyone the chance to find something they can help with and feel good about.”
Volunteer Shoreline Cleanups
One of the most important things that volunteers help with is shoreline cleanup. This is generally done during the winter months while the water is down and folks are able to get through some of the vegetation more easily. The service days allow staff and volunteers to clean up trash that has floated in from the water and been left behind by visitors. It might surprise you to know the size of this problem – last year volunteers removed over two tons of trash from the shorelines in Land Between the Lakes. And the best part -almost 60% of that trash was recycled! There are two shoreline cleanup days this January:

`Friends of Land Between The Lakes
Since its founding in 1983, Friends of Land Between The Lakes has worked to provide program services and funds for development. Today their Friends Group continues that support. They provide interpretive programming staff at both the Woodlands Nature Station and the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum. The LBL Planetarium shows serve as a fundraising program. Information clerks at LBL’s five reception centers also work for the friends group. Over just the past five years, Friends of Land Between The Lakes organized and conducted volunteer activities for the general public which produced over 55,000 hours of donated service. The value of this donated service was in excess of $900,000. Their volunteers include Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups and individuals from all across the country. Students from more than five different colleges spend their fall or spring break volunteering at Land Between The Lakes. Save on Heating Costs this Winter
O
ne of the biggest complaints that most people have is the cost of heating their homes during these cold winter months. Luckily, there are actually numerous ways to reduce your home heating bills - and the good news is that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on renovations or new heating systems to do it. Here are some pro tips on keeping the heating costs down in your home.
Replace Weather Stripping
An inexpensive way to save money on the cost of home heating is to replace old and worn weather stripping. Weather stripping is usually placed around windows and doors to provide a closer seal when they are closed. When its no longer in good shape, it won’t do
the job it is intended for. You could be losing as much as 12 percent of your home’s heat just because your weather stripping needs to be replaced. By replacing it you’ll be able to cut down on drafts and keep the heat inside your home more efficiently - and that means a lower heating bill.
Seal Electrical Boxes
Electrical outlets are a huge source of heat loss in homes, because there is space for heat to escape through. This is easy enough to fix, and you don’t need to hire an electrician to do it. Just take off the cover plates with a screwdriver, fill in any gaps around the boxes with caulking (acrylic latex), and then put the cover back in place. You may also want to add a foam gasket, which goes between the outlet and the cover plate.
Clear the Vents
If your vents are blocked, they aren’t going to be able to do their intended job of sending warm air throughout your home. Check to see if you have furniture in front of, or on top of vents. My doing a little creative rearranging, your vents will be clear and can deliver more heat when you need it.
Use Portable Heaters
Yes, you do have to spend money to buy and operate portable heaters, but they can help you save on your heating bill in the long run. If you are using a portable heater to take the chill off a room, you can turn down the thermostat in your home, and save as much as three percent of your heating costs. Make sure that you do you

research before buying a portable heater, as some can really suck the electricity. Others are more energy-efficient, and will help you to save money over time. Eventually, a portable heater will pay for itself, and then some.
Put Up Plastic Film
If you have doorways that you aren’t using (such as basement entry ways), or windows that are going to be closed all winter, take it a step further and seal them off with plastic film. You can lose up to 25 percent of your home heating through drafty windows. Plastic film is inexpensive, and easy to install. As long as you have a hair dryer and a few minutes of time, you can easily seal off windows and doorways.
Do Furnace Maintenance
It is important to do regular maintenance on your furnace in order to keep it functioning properly. When a furnace is not properly maintained, it will not work efficiently and cost you more to run. Start by making sure that you change your filter regularly to keep it clean as this is very important to how your furnace will operate.
Use Your Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans aren’t just for keeping you cool in the summer. They can also help to keep your home warmer. Heat rises, so if you are using a ceiling fan, it is going to send that heat back down towards the floor, and help to cut the cost of your home heating. Make sure that the ceiling fan is turned to the reverse setting in order to push the heat downwards.
Insulate Your Attic
Insulation is relatively affordable for the long term benefits that it provides and it’s an easy DIY project. Attic insulation prevents warm air from escaping, and it also helps to maintain a more comfortable and even temperatures throughout the home.
Dress Warmly
This easy hack helps you stay warm without increasing your energy cost at all. It is much more affordable to heat your body than it is to heat your home. So turn down the thermostat a couple degrees and put on your comfy pajamas, favorite sweater and cozy slippers instead. Dress in layers and use body warmth as a good excuse to snuggle up next to your partner under a cozy blanket. Not only will you feel warm and cozy, will also feel better when you get a lower heating bill.
Harness Power of the Sun
The sun provides free heating every day. Make sure to open your blinds and curtains during sunlight hours to allow the sun rays to heat your home at no cost. When the sun starts to go down, close your blinds and curtains to trap the heat, insulate your home and keep cold air from coming in.

Paducah Warming Center Colder temperatures are here and with them comes the opening of Paducah’s Warming Center at the Community Kitchen. While the tips in this article are for those who have a home to heat, the Warming Center is for members of the community who are exposed to extreme weather elements, which can be life-threatening. The Warming Center offers an overnight relief station when temperatures fall to 40 degrees or below. The Center is open from December 1 to March 31. The individuals who use the Warming Center often reside under a bridge, or in a tent, abandoned structure, or vehicle. At the Warming Center, they are provided with a cot on which to sleep, clean linens, a hot meal, and access to laundry and shower facilities. “At the Warming Center, we hope to not only provide visitors with a warm place to stay but also show them God’s love,” says Holly Long, scheduling coordinator. “We are here to serve as a stepping-stone toward a possible path for a better living situation for them and their family.” The Warming Center is staffed by volunteers, under the direction of Jim Trimble. Volunteers work in teams of two to cover shifts each night that the Center is open. They assist in welcoming guests, assigning bedding, and scheduling showers, among other tasks. Volunteers must be 18 years of age. For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact Long at 270.217.9096 or e-mail her at hgklong@comcast.net. MCC Senior Citizen Center
Mark McLemore, Executive Director of Murray Calloway County Senior Citizens Center, told me that this program is beneficial to his facility. “The Murray Calloway County Senior Citizens Center has developed a working partnership with several entities associated with MSU, including participating in Nonprofit Connections events,” McLemore said. “We have found it very beneficial to have a good working relationship with representatives from MSU and the other nonprofit organizations who also see the benefits of our association.” “The use of volunteer MSU students is critical for us to provide quality services to the mature population of our community,” McLemore added. “These individuals help to produce or coordinate programs and events, provide support for our nutrition program, and interact with our wonderful seniors to promote socialization for their health & well-being. In many cases, the students come in with the attitude that they will be giving something special to the seniors they serve. But, at the end of their experience, it is the senior who has provided them with something very special and meaningful.” If you have any questions about their programs and services, please contact McLemore at mmclemore@murrayseniorcenter.org or 270.753.0929. 914 Jefferson Local History
T
he past is something, or someplace, that ceases to be the moment it’s gone. Or is it? Humans have been trying to harness time and bring the past into the present for as long as we have existed. Some have succeeded. By preserving landscapes and buildings from a time past, they can nurture and revive a whole different era.
The History
A house in Paducah has been preserved in this way by owners John & Sherron Dunaway. The house located at 914 Jefferson Street in Paducah, was built by Benjamin H. Wisdom in 1868, Paducah’s first millionaire. “It’s a classic example of an architectural style known as Gothic Revival,” said co-owner Sherron Dunaway. Boasting 12-foot
ceilings and baseboards that are a foot in height, it certainly makes a statement. The front of the house still has the original wood and original windows with wavy glass. It has two bedrooms and a bath upstairs. An interesting feature is that the home actually has closets, which is uncommon in homes of this period. Back in the mid-1800’s homeowners were taxed by number of bedrooms, and closets counted as rooms. This meant that many homes did not have closets.
The Renovation Process
The Dunaway’s bought the house in December of 2014. It had stood vacant for a year before the purchase. Sherron said it needed a lot

of repairs. The front porch was falling in on one corner and most of the porch floor was rotten. The interior was not in as bad a shape as some of the exterior. The main kitchen had a leak from the roof in one corner which had damaged the walls and cabinets. To repair this, Sherron and John had to tear out the cabinets and redo the walls. In the process of this renovation, they found two original windows with the original glass still intact. They were hidden behind the cabinets, which they restored.
Keeping with the time
Since those first repairs, the Dunaway’s have painted the woodwork and the fireplace in the living room. “(The living room) has the old Paducah tile around it and is quite beautiful,” Sherron told me. Throughout the renovations process, they have taken care to maintain the original design and decorations as much as possible. The new living room wall paper is a stripe pattern true to the time, and the original wood floors are still in place, having survived the 1937 flood. Sherron explained to me that they are slightly warped from having been in the water. “I think these bumps just give the house more character,” she said smiling.

The Interior
Two walls in the dining room have been re-papered in the popular style of that time period- beautiful. A third wall has a glass door cabinet original to the house and was designed to hold silver. The dining room area of the house also contains the staircase. The spindles and railings on it are original pieces. Upstairs, the renovations have begun with some painting.
The Housekeeping Quarters
Like many old houses, the Dunaway’s home has a separate living space for housekeeping. This area is structured like a den, has an original fireplace, and a kitchen. “In Mr. Wisdom’s day, the housekeeper would have lived in this part of the house,” Sherron said. he area was attached to the main house at some point but is unaware when.
The Exterior
The house has a stone fence around the property. Sherron said the fence may have been added by Mr. Wisdom before he died in 1896. The house also has the original front doors and the wavy glass in most of the windows. When the house was built, it would have boasted a large, round bell mounted on the inside operated by a star shaped knob on the outside. Sherron said when they purchased the house, the outline of the bell was still there. She and John searched until they found a bell to fit the spot. “We have painted the ceiling on the porch a very light blue,” Sherron said. This is another way they have honored the time period. This was a practice in the south that was said to keep evil spirits away from homes.
A labor of love
There are many historic homes in the Purchase Area such as this one. They often require a lot of renovation and tender loving care to keep them in livable shape. In some cases regular upkeep may have been neglected or they may have been converted to multiple units that were rented out. So its no surprise that quite often a new home owner is not only faced with a complete remodel ,but need major work including plumbing and electrical. It’s an undertaking many people are not willing to tackle. As for the Dunaway’s home,“We are glad the house spoke to us to buy it and save it,” Sherron told me. She and her husband live in it when they re in Paducah. They enjoy the downtown, Carson Center, and the local restaurants and shops. They also rent the home too visitors during quilt week. “We enjoy showing off the house,” Sherron said. “For the most part we just enjoy our historic home, especially sitting on the porch.”

Benjamin H. Wisdom Wisdom was the son of a farmer from Virginia. The family moved to Kentucky when Ben was just nine years old. Like many farming families of the time, he worked in the summer on the farm and attended school each winter. At 17 he started work in a dry good store. Just three years later, at the age of 20, he asked the owner if he could purchase half interest in the stock with a note for $3,120. Today that would have been close to $67,000! He took an active role in the management of the business and was so helpful, and successful that he was never asked to pay the note. After 14 years he moved on to other enterprises. His share of the business valued at $18,000. He lived in Clarksville, where he became a tobacco dealer, and then a bank clerk. By the time the civil war began his net worth was $100K. He moved to New York, formed a partnership with two others and started Norton, Wisdom & Company. His fortunes blossomed when be began to acquire real estate - first in Texas, then Wisconsin and finally Minnesota. It was noted that his skills were not in the purchase of the land but in his understanding of the potential value of the property and its uses. By 1866, when he left new York, Wisdom was worth over $250,000 . He returned to Jefferson Street, Paducah and continued to invest his money. By the time of his death in 1896 he was Paducah’s first millionaire and one of the richest men in Kentucky.

Hope Inside
I
n October of 2017, Regions Bank partnered with Operation HOPE and plans to open several HOPE Inside locations in western Kentucky. The HOPE inside program operates financial empowerment centers. They provide free financial education, as well as credit and money management counseling, to are individuals, families, and business owners. HOPE Inside offices are literally “inside” financial institutions, retail stores, supermarkets and other community locations. This allows Operation HOPE to reach more people since their offices are embedded in existing business, reducing the costs associated with running a financial counseling center.
Operation HOPE
Operation HOPE was started in 1992 with a vision to make free enterprise and capitalism work for the undeserved. It is the only organization certified by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council to operate within a bank. Regions began partnering with HOPE in 2014 when a counseling center opened in the company’s headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. That center was a great success and there are now over 100 HOPE Inside locations - with more than 600 new offices within the next 36 months. According to the organization, each office holds consumer credit counseling certification, CFPB, FDIC, U.S. SBA, EITC, HUD, and FEMA applications.
Financial Wellbeing Coach Tiffini Clemons
Tiffini Clemons, a certified financial wellbeing coach from Operation HOPE, will deliver financial education at Regions locations in the Paducah area based on community needs. “I am passionate about empowering and educating people financially,” Clemens told me. “I bring over 14 years of experience in the financial services industry to my role with operation HOPE. My areas of focus include helping people improve their credit scores, understand and use credit wisely, strengthen their overall financial management skills, and become better prepared to achieve homeownership, avoid foreclosure or reach other financial goals. I’m grateful for the amazing opportunity to service the Kentucky Region with free financial education and awareness.” “We are here to welcome anyone who is interested in making financial progress,” Clemons said. “HOPE Inside helps people learn how to

make sound financial decisions and create a personalized road map toward achieving their dreams. Further, this program is here to help prospective business owners turn their ideas for a new company into reality. And we’re here to help existing business owners navigate the financial challenges a small company might face.”
Classes & Workshops
Since their opening, HOPE Inside has held a variety of free workshops and classes on credit and money management. These courses focus on improving credit scores, managing budgets, learning how to read credit reports, and improving credit reports. For small-business owners, HOPE Inside offers entrepreneurial training covering issues ranging from accounting and financial management to marketing, business plan development and more. These classes usually fill up quickly, so make sure to follow the HOPE Inside Facebook page (HOPE Inside Regions Bank Paducah) for updates on courses as they are scheduled.
Empowering the Community
“Financial education is a crucial part of helping a community prosper, and as this program empowers people to take charge of their finances, improve their credit scores and reach their financial goals, we can have a tremendous impact on the entire area,” said Amy Crafford, branch manager for Regions Bank in Paducah. “We have seen the success of Operation HOPE in cities across the country, and we are honored to bring this program to Paducah. The result of our partnership is free, focused, one-on-one financial empowerment for anyone who wants it.”
