all came and went in a blink this year. My husband said he though it occurred between 2:30pm and 6pm last Thursday! He may be right, because leaves are already dropping in droves and its cold enough to turn the gas logs on in the house (just to knock off the chill of course!).
In this edition of Purchase Area Family Magazine you'll find our Holiday Shopping Guide. Please pull it out from the center of the magazine and make sure you check out the great businesses in our area. Holiday open houses are the big talk around the office. Many shops and businesses hold one or more this time of the year and they are a great opportunity to start your Christmas shopping and get some deals in the process. We also have “Small Business Saturday” on November 25th and I definitely encourage everyone to ‘shop local’ and support the many great businesses that have been created in western Kentucky. I’m not just talking about boutiques and gift stores, but the insurance agencies, restaurants, chiropractors, and daycares etc. We are blessed with a thriving economy in this region and those small business owners count on your patronage. “A Grateful Mindset” With our Thanksgiving holidays just around the corner, I find myself reflecting on all that I am thankful for. But I also find myself upset, and frankly, a little depressed, about the state of our country and the world. Perhaps what I need to do it focus on an attitude of gratitude! Now I certainly didn’t coin that phrase but it’s exactly what I mean. I have a lot to be thankful for: A family I love, a safe home in a great town, all the food and necessities of life, and the best furry friends a women can have. And, I fundamentally am an optimistic person. I believe that life is better when you have a hopeful outlook and appreciate what you have, and have accomplished. So, this Thanksgiving I’m going to cultivate a grateful mindset, an “attitude of gratitude” - meaning I am going to try and make it a habit to express thankfulness and appreciation, in all parts of my life, on a regular basis. I’m challenging our readers to do the same. Let’s inject an “attitude of gratitude” into our lives this November and maybe, just maybe, it will have a positive effect on our enjoyment of life during the Christmas season.

he McCracken County High School (MCHS) theatre department has a proud history of staging great productions at the campus performing arts center. Their fall drama is no exception. The students are proud and excited to present The Miracle Worker. This wonderful play about deaf and blind student Helen Keller is sure to be a huge hit. Tickets are on sale now for the three performances, November 9, 10 and 11. The production can be seen at the McCracken County High School C-Plant Performing Arts Center.
Meet the Cast
The Miracle Worker is the heart-warming story of an incredible friendship and bond between a teacher, Annie Sullivan, and her deaf and blind student, Helen Keller. Set in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Helen suffers an illness at 18 months old that leaves her blind and deaf. Her parents, who pity and spoil their afflicted daughter, are desperate to create an ordered life and communicate with Helen. They hire a young Annie Sullivan to try and reach the mind of their daughter who can’t see or hear.

“This show has been such a challenge, but I know the payoff will be so rewarding to my cast and to the audience,” Bowden told me. “The Miracle Worker” is an especially demanding play, both physically and emotionally, for many of the actors. They handle it with great professionalism.” “To be able to work with such talented performers has been my greatest blessing. I think that, while many people may think they know the story of Helen Keller, this play will open their eyes to a more human side of the entire family.”

Helen’s journey in this show is incredible, and I feel honored to be able to show it to everyone. There is no limit to the amount I have learned while in rehearsals,” Hodges added. “It can be quite challenging for Helen to get a message across without seeing or hearing. I’ve had to figure out new ways to operate as an actor. It has been a learning process for all of us. It helps that the cast has bonded so closely. We are family onstage and off. Hope Eason (Annie Sullivan) and I help each other during especially physical scenes, which are a lot of fun! It’s been such a wonderful time and everyone should see it!” “Being able to portray Annie Sullivan has been a wonderful opportunity that I am so thankful for. Through the process, I have learned several things,” Hope Eason, a senior who plays Annie Sullivan, told me. “Annie is someone I aspire to be as she is strong, determined, witty, and independent.” “The show has also allowed me to learn to appreciate language and knowledge more and the power of words, which people often take for granted. It has been a blessing to work beside Hope Hodges who is Helen. It is important for Annie and Helen to be comfortable with each other, especially in the more difficult scenes, and we have great chemistry together. It takes a lot of team work.” “I’m thrilled to be a part of this wonderfully talented cast. All of these people are a joy to work with!” Cameron Durbin, a senior who plays Captain Keller, added. “Every cast member is extremely dedicated to this play and we love every second of the time we spend together. The show is just fantastic. It’s a very touching story and I love bringing it to life here in Paducah. Don’t miss it!” Tickets, which range from $8 to $10, are available at the door or online at gomccracken.com.

Peace In The Process How Adoption Built My Faith & Family
ess
IN THE
HOW ADO P T IO N B U IL M Y F A IT H & MY FAM T IL Y
Kristin Hill Taylor believes in seeking God as the author of every story and loves swapping these stories with friends on her porch. She lives in Murray, Kentucky, with her husband and three kids. Some years ago she wrote for Purchase Area Family, so when we found out she had written a book, we were excited to help her with publicity. Her family’s story is the perfect way to shine a light on adoption – especially as November is Adoption Awareness Month. The following is slightly edited except from her book......
S
omebody once said my husband and I make beautiful babies. Well, actually we don’t – at least not biologically. We do know our kids are beautiful and love their birth moms for that and so, so many other reasons. But it doesn’t stop with their outward appearances. Because these women chose life, Greg and I get the opportunity to make these babies into people – beautiful people. God willing, these babies who were all born with dark hair and easy smiles will grow up to be lovely from the inside out. November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Infertility led my husband and I to adoption, but we have no doubt we were meant to become a family this way. God used adoption to build our faith and our family. Adoption always begins with darkness only God can redeem. Adoption is rooted in grief and loss and poverty and brokenness. But God brings light and purpose and fullness and joy to situations only he can make new. When Rachel – my youngest who is now 2, was tiny, I read Looking for Lovely: Collecting the Moments that Matter by Annie Downs. It has nothing to do with adoption but everything to do with finding God in the midst of pain and sadness and brokenness. One passage struck me deeply: The pain of broken families and broken hearts sometimes is deeper than words can describe. But there is beauty in choosing to feel that pain, in calling hurt what it is, and not pretending everything is
KRISTIN H ILL TAYLO R okay. Whatever tragedy you have experienced or are currently living through, the most beautiful thing you can do is LIVE. Keep walking, keep weeping, and keep eating. Don’t ignore the hurt. Don’t attempt to avoid it and just move on with your life. Feel it all, and invite people in to feel it with you. I can’t think of anything more lovely. When I read this, I thought about the adoption group I host on Facebook, where we share resources and prayers and praises. I remembered where I’d been and what God has done with that brokenness. And I offered thanksgiving – yet again – for my kids’ birth moms who made brave decisions in the midst of messy circumstances. That’s why holding my sleeping babies in church has always been holy for me. It’s so ordinary, yet its proof God hears the desires of our hearts and calls us for a specific purpose. A sleeping baby who is at home nestled in the crook of my arm is evidence that God brought light to the darkness. One Sunday when Rachel was 7 months old, I held her while she slept and I remembered when coming to church was hard a decade earlier because people kept announcing pregnancies and I was ready to do

Book Signing Event In conjunction with National Adoption Month, Taylor is having a book signing event from 10am to 1pm, Saturday, November 4 at New Life Christian Bookstore at the corner of 5th & Main Streets in Murray. Her book will be available for purchase there. After initially publishing an e-book version of Peace in the Process in 2014, this updated version includes contributions from other adoptive moms, the Taylor children's birth moms, and resources for families who want to grow through adoption and the people who support them. Her book is available in both paperback and Kindle versions on Amazon.
the same. I remembered how my oldest Cate (who is now 10) was born on a Sunday, my middle Ben (who’s turning 8 this month) on a Monday, and then Rachel on a Saturday. Announcing their births was nothing short of miraculous. They’re all proof God redeems and makes new.
the words on the slides during worship. And Rachel slept (although that sleeping-through-church season is short!) They all belong and I have no doubt Greg and I were chosen to be their parents. I can’t think of anything more holy than that. But, of course, with that baby in my arms, God had more to teach me.
With a baby in my arms, church was different than it was a decade ago. Cate claimed Christ has her savior. Ben was still wiggly but could read
Our speaker in church talked about prayer and how it heals. While Rachel slept in my arms, I looked up healed during the sermon and read “to cure, to make whole.” In that moment, I was keenly aware of what God has done through prayers to make our family whole. We think our family is complete. I say “think” because I’ve learned never say never when it comes to God. But here we are - a party of five that God orchestrated. There’s evidence of God’s faithfulness in my kids’ eyes – the girls have matching brown and Ben’s are blue like Greg’s and mine. There’s proof God hears the desires of our hearts when I remember how we got here. I wasn’t sick in the physical sense, but my body didn’t function properly for pregnancy and I have been sick in the spiritual sense. Along this journey to and through motherhood, I’ve been sad and broken and angry and lost. Yet I’ve also been happy and fulfilled and peaceful and found. I think of the prayers – the one I cried out to God, the ones my friends said to God in my presence, the ones I probably don’t even know about – and realize that’s how we made it here. Adoption built my faith and my family, but the prayers along the way healed my soul and made my family whole.

uneven terrain, including paved roads and cobblestone streets, with few hills or stairs. Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour. You should feel comfortable carrying your luggage and gear by yourself at all times.
A Culinary Tour
German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good. Swiss food is varied and sophisticated, and some popular dishes include sausages, breaded veal fillets, freshwater fish and cheese dishes such as fondue and raclette. Be sure to try Swiss chocolate, which is among the world’s finest! Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp and crayfish. Save room for dessert - especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the worldfamous Sachertorte. On the tour extension, Hungary claims goulash as its national dish, but also is known for excellent salamis, cheeses, nut-flavored pancakes, freshwater fish and preserved fruits.
How do I dress?
How the weather will fluctuate once out of the U.S. is a concern on any traveler’s mind. May in Germany is predicted to be in the 60’s during the day and in the 40’s at night. Trip coordinators recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rain-wear. A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance. It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
What travel documents do I need?
This tour visits Germany, Switzerland and Austria (plus Hungary on the tour extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry. Make sure you have at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
Book today!
Signing up early is important because prices will increase as the trip time approaches. Prices, trip information, and early registration can be found at patblaine.grouptoursite.com. Trip payment plans are available. For more information about the WKCTC Study Abroad Program, contact Pat Blaine pat.blaine@kctcs.edu or by calling 270.534.3207.

complete loss of vehicle control, accelerator controls that may break or stick,” or “child safety seats that contain defective safety belts, buckles, or components that create a risk of injury.”
We probably pay most attention to product recalls that involve our cars and our food, but the two administrations and one commission that the issue recalls do so for all sorts of products and reasons. And you know what - we really need to pay attention to them!
Take, for example, a manufacturer’s announcement that its frozen hash browns “may be contaminated with extraneous golf ball materials” believed to have been harvested with the potatoes. As peculiar as this situation sounds, the potential consequences for anyone who may have eaten the contaminated hash browns - choking or digestive injuries - were anything by funny.
hen you buy somethings from a grocery store, local retailer, or even a reputable online vendor, you can reasonable assume it’s safe for its intended use. But in the manufacturing and supply chain - as in life - things don’t always go according to plan.
Unsafe or Defective
A product typically is recalled when it’s found to contain a defect that makes it unsafe or it fails to meet a federal safety standard. Different agencies oversee recalls of various types of products. For example, in the United States: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates 80% of food products, as well as medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics.
The Case of the Bad Hash Browns
The manufacturer worked with the Food and Drug Administration and supermarkets to remove the affected products from store shelves and asked consumers to return, or throw away, the hash browns. That, essentially, is how recalls work - although they vary depending on the type of product, the nature of the
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is responsible for items consumers use in their homes, schools, and recreation. This includes appliances, clothing, furniture, sporting equipment, baby gear, and toys. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) oversees recalls of motor vehicles and related items, such as tires and child safety seats. In the case of FDA-regulated products, spokesperson Peter Cassell can name several examples of recall-worthy issues such as “a drug product that does not contain the labeled amount of active drug ingredient, a food that contains an undeclared allergen, or a cosmetic product contaminated with harmful bacteria.”

NHTSA, on the other hand, might require a recall in response to “steering components that break suddenly, causing partial or

Knowledge Key for Parents If you have children, you know how much gear can be involved in daily activities such as eating, sleeping, playing and bathing. And the more equipment you have, the more likely one or more of those products will be recalled at some point. “Children’s product are some of the most regulated products in the US,” Deputy Director/Press Secretary for the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. “Young children are vulnerable. They need to be protected from hazards with products, such as choking, strangulation, suffocation or drowning.”
Vehicle manufacturers are required to notify owners of a recall by first-class mail within a “reasonable amount of time” after the problem is identified. If you’ve registered your vehicle with our state (or registered your child car seat with the manufacturer), you’ll be notified directly in the event of a recall. You also can search for recalls by manufacturer or Vehicle Identification Number at safercar.gov, which is maintained by the NHTSA.
Is That Old Crib Safe?
Respond to a Recall
For parents, staying up to date on product safety and recalls may seem overwhelming. They may be inundated with hand-me-downs from other parents, or feel pressured to use equipment their own parents have been saving in the attic. But the rules are there for a reason, and cribs are an excellent example.
In theory, responding to a recall should be easy. Instructions are laid out in the notice and, in many cases, the consumer is simply asked to stop using the product and return it for a refund, repair, or replacement. Unfortunately the consumer doesn’t always follow through.
“The new federal standard was put in place to protect children after numerous deaths occurred involving drop-side cribs or slats or mattress supports that didn’t hold up, Davis added. “The manufacture date should be marked on your crib. If it’s before June 28, 2011, don’t use or sell the crib.”
This is true even in the case of vehicle recalls - despite the fact that the remedy is free to the consumer. According to NHTSA, 20 percent of recalled vehicles are not brought in for the necessary repairs. A recent survey conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan tied this reluctance to vehicle owners’ fear that the dealership would try to tack on additional repairs (38% of respondents), the difficulty of giving up the care for repairs (37%), or the amount of time it would take for the repairs to be made (36%).
Getting the Word Out Both manufacturers and government agencies use a number of methods to publicize recalls, including press releases, notifications on their websites, and social media. You can go on CPSC’s website at cpsc.gov or saferproducts.gov to sign up for email alerts. You can also follow both on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The FDA posts recall information on its website at fda.gov/safety/ recalls and in its weekly FDA Enforcement Report at fda.gov/safety/ recalls/enforcementreports.
However, the stakes are too high to let inconvenience stand in your way. Wes Long is a service advisor at Chip Wynn Motors in Paducah. He told me if you get a card from the NHTSA that it is nothing to ignore. “Get it taken care of! If you’ve received notice of a recall, it is normally a safety issue,” Long added. “Most establishments will try to upsell other add-ons, but if it is not necessary, you should put your foot down and save those for another day.”

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? The Vegetarian at Thanksgiving
H
ow many times have you stepped outside your culinary comfort zone? For me, it generally happens when I have a guest that has a special culinary request or restriction. They may be a Pescetarian (only eats fish), have food allergies (peanuts or gluten), or be vegetarian or vegan (no animal products). Whether their requests are for medical or religious reasons, or just personal choice, you want to be a good host and provide foods your guests can enjoy.
Thanksgiving with a Twist
Thanksgiving is around the corner and I’m planning our traditional feast with one twist. One of our guests is a vegetarian. So, I need to make sure that we have enough vegetable dishes to satiate their hunger and also provide protein, and good nutrition - without being stuffed with turkey. This shouldn’t be too much of a dilemma as we are always heavy on vegetables in the iCook household.

But here’s where the dish drops. How do you prepare your vegetables? Being from the south, my green beans are seasoned with a large ham hock - not exactly vegetarian faire! It seems that I will have to rethink some things. I’ll make extra dishes if necessary that don’t have meat in them.
It’s Not Meat!
There are plenty of substitutions that can be made to make traditional recipes vegetarian or even vegan. Some examples are using soy milk for cow’s milk, tofu scramblers instead of eggs, plain vegan yogurt instead of sour cream, or vegetable stock instead of beef or chicken stock. If you aren’t sure, a simple search for “vegan cooking substitutions” will be extremely helpful. I’m writing this article with my vegetarian guest in mind. My recipes today will be meat free and may give you some ideas on how to spice up your holiday feast without animal protein. Live, Laugh, Love and Eat Well.
Time required 1.5 hours, 6 first course servings One 2 LB pumpkin, halved & seeds removed 1 tsp salt ¼ plus a pinch freshly ground black pepper 2 TBSP olive oil 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon (2 if you
1 TBSP minced garlic 3 ½ cups vegetable stock (original recipe called for chicken stock) ½ cup heavy cream 3 TBSP pumpkin oil (optional)
¾ tsp ground allspice
15-20 small sage leaves, fried
½ cup chopped carrot

2 TBSP minced ginger
really like cinnamon)
¾ cup chopped onion
Roasted Pumpkin Soup
¼ cup chopped celery
(optional)
Preheat oven to 400°F
Place the pumpkin cut side up on a parchment lined baking sheet. Season with ½ tsp of salt & ¼ tsp of pepper. Invert to the cut side down, & drizzle with 1 TBSP olive oil. Place in the oven & roast until the skin is golden brown & the pumpkin is tender, 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from the oven & allow to cool. Once cool enough to handle, use a spoon to scoop the pumpkin flesh from its skin & set the pumpkin aside until ready to use. Discard the skin. Set a medium saucepan over medium high heat. Add the remaining 2 TBSP olive oil &, when hot, add the cinnamon & allspice & cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add the onions, carrots, celery, ginger, & garlic to the pan & sauté, stirring occasionally, until lightly caramelized, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the stock & reserved pumpkin to the pan & bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer & cook the soup for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft. Remove the soup from the heat & process with an immersion blender or in small batches in a blender until smooth. Season with the remaining ½ tsp salt & pinch of pepper. Add the cream to the soup & stir to combine. Serve in a warmed bowl & drizzle with pumpkin oil & garnish with fried sage leaves. NOTE: When processing hot liquids; remove the liquid from heat & allow to cool at least 5 minutes. Transfer liquid to a blender or food process & only fill ½ way. If using blender, release the corner of the lid to prevent vacuum effect that creates heat explosions. Place towel over the top of the machine as your pulse to process or until smooth.

Herb & Apple Stuffing Courtesy of Ina Garten 16 cups of 1-inch bread cubes, white or whole wheat (about 2 Baguettes) 4 TBSP unsalted butter
1 ½ tsp minced fresh rosemary (about ¾ tsp dried rosemary, chopped)
2 cups medium diced yellow onions
2 tsp kosher salt
2 cups medium diced celery
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
2 Granny Smith apples, unpeeled, cored & large diced
1 cup vegetable stock
2 TBSP chopped flat leaf parsley
½ cup sliced blanched almonds, toasted, optional
Preheat oven to 300°F. Put the bread cubes on a 13x18x1-inch deep baking sheet & bake for 7 minutes. In a large sauté pan, melt the butter & add the onion, celery, apples, parsley, rosemary, salt, & pepper. Sauté for 10 minutes or until the mixture is soft. Combine the bread cubes & cooked vegetables in a large bowl & add the stock, & almonds if desired. (I deviated from original recipe here as instructions were to cook in turkey cavity for 2 ½ hours). Place dressing in a 3-quart baking dish & cover with foil. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes or until heated through.

Rustic Vegetable Tart Courtesy of Kenny Rochford and Food & Wine Serves 8 FILLING PASTRY 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ cup fine cornmeal or polenta 1 tsp salt 2 TBSP chopped chives 4 TBSP cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 4 TBSP cold vegetable shortening ¼ cups plus 2 TBSP ice water
4 LBS Fava beans in the shell (can substitute chick peas, lima beans, or edamame) ¾ LBS thin asparagus, trimmed 3 TBSP extra virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing 10 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2 bunches scallions, thinly sliced Salt & freshly ground black pepper 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
In a food processor, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt & chives & process to blend. Add the butter & pulse a few times until the pieces are the size of small peas. Add the shortening & pulse a few times. Sprinkle the ice water over the mixture & pulse until the dough barely comes together. Scrape the dough onto a lightly floured work surface & knead to form a ball. Flatten the ball into a disk, wrap in plastic & refrigerate for 1 hour, or until firm. Remove the favas from the pod. Fill a large skillet half full of salted water & bring a boil. Add the favas & blanch for about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the favas to a baking sheet. Let cool slightly, then peel. Add the asparagus to the boiling water & cook until just tender, about 3 minutes. Drain & transfer to the baking sheet to cool. Cut asparagus into 1-inch pieces. Wipe out the skillet & heat the 3 TBSP olive oil. Add the garlic & cook over low heat, stirring, until golden, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the scallions & cook 2
minutes. Then add the favas & asparagus & cook until heated through, about 2 minutes. Season with salt & pepper. Let cool. Preheat the oven to 400F. On a floured work surface, roll out the pastry to a 14-inch round, about 1/8 inch thick. Roll the pastry around a rolling pin & carefully transfer to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Scrape the vegetable mixture into the center of the pastry, leaving a 1 ½ - inch border all around. Fold the edges up over the filling & scatter with Gruyere on top. Brush the edges with olive oil. Bake the tart on the bottom rack of the oven for about 30 minutes, until the crust is crisp on the bottom & golden brown. Remove from oven & let cool to warm. Cut into wedges & serve.

P
aducah Shooter’s Supply is a familiar name to the people of this area. They have been serving Western Kentucky, Southern Illinois, Southeast Missouri, and Northwest Tennessee since 1983. The McCutchen’s opened their doors with only a small showroom of guns and ammo, they quickly became a reputable gun store. They have a showroom of over 3,000 guns and full service gun repair center, clothing, boots, archery, gun safes, and other sporting goods. There isn’t much an outdoorsman or shooting sports activist can’t find within their doors.
NEW Temporary Location
Due to a recent fire at their location, Shooter’s has temporarily moved clothing and retail sales to the former Guy Gray Supply building, located at 5235 Alben Barkley Drive. This is easily accessible from Exit 7 off Interstate 24 and just seconds from West Kentucky Community and Technical College. Inside, you will find a great selection of all of your favorite clothing, boots, and archery brands. Firearms will still be sold at Shooter’s original location at 3919 Cairo Road, off Exit 3.
Bigger & Better Than Ever
In the coming months, Shooter’s Supply will undergo a complete renovation to make their store better than ever. So, please pardon their ‘construction zone’ as they work to get the building on Cairo Road ready for business once again. Don’t live near Paducah? No problem! A Season for Bazaars!
W
hen I want a unique or hand-crafted gift at Christmas I look for the date of a local Holiday bazaars. The best time for a fundraiser such as this is during the fall and winter – peak shopping season. The Holiday bazaar has become a tradition for many churches, schools, charities and non-profit organizations. People are getting into the holiday spirit and are looking to buy crafts homemade gifts and baked goods.
Quilt Lovers of Murray has its annual bazaar on November 4th from 9am-1pm, at the Calloway County Public Library. Our area is full of these events over the next two months so to get you in the shopping mood, and to help these fine folks raise some funds, we’ve compiled a list of just a few of the bazaars going on this November.
Immanuel Baptist Church in Paducah will have their 23rd annual bazaar on November 4th from 10am – 2pm. There are three main parts to the bazaar: a section where arts and crafts plus homemade baked goods are sold, trash & treasure (which is a gym full of used items, akin to a church-wide yard sale), and the luncheon.

Get Your Moves On! West Kentucky Chess Announces K-12 Fall Tournament Schedule
C
hess is a classic game and carries an appeal that has spread across centuries. The first traces of the game are as old as the 6th century Gupta Empire in northern India, during which time it was called chaturanga, a Sanskrit word meaning four divisions. This word had a military background, and referred to pieces in the game - knight, rook, bishop, and pawn.
When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently, through the Moorish conquest of Spain, spread to Southern Europe. The modern game we play today formed later, around 1200. The first chess tournament was held in 1851 in London and it became a loved sport.
classroom setting), and advising the community on how to work with the Kentucky Chess Association. His big goal is helping the club become self-sustaining at the local-level.
Kentucky Chess Association
WKC is a part of the Kentucky Chess Association (KCA). This organization functions as the primary scholastic affiliate for the state, under the United States Chess Federation (USCF), and has been active for several decades. Knight served as their Quad A coordinator for years, but said, “the increase in regional chess growth required more than just regional coordinator, so WKC was created.”
West Kentucky Chess
Tom Knight began the West Kentucky Chess (WKC) club at Graves County High School in 2009. Between 2009 and 2014, he turned the high school club into a district-wide chess program that is now self-sustaining. Its funding comes from a district chess ‘booster club’. WKC’s goal is to provide a fun and entertaining option for families and individuals through the game of chess. Since the creation of the club Knight has been able to provide the region with several chess tournament opportunities - both open and scholastic. He is currently working to get more school teams involved in the regional chess season. He does this through multi-week chess instructional classes, coaches trainings (both on the job and formal

sure each player gets to play someone as close to their playing ability as possible. The colors are swapped each round, so usually in a 4-round event, every player will play the same color twice.
WKC has released their Chess Membership Tournament schedule for 2017-2018 for K-12 students. Below are these fall tournaments and they have also scheduled a variety of events for the spring of 2018. November 4th ....................... Murray Scholastic, Murray November 11th ....................................................... OPEN DATE November 18th ....... McCracken Co. Matches
The types of chess events that fall under the KCA and USCF are rated through a national database that compares every chess player within it based on their playing ability. This both provides players with an idea of how well they play, and how to progress as they improve. “Without a rating system, players would have really tough time determining how they compare among each other and strangers throughout the country,” Knight explained. West Kentucky Chess will run an event based on what is asked of it by a tournament organizer. They try to promote only rated chess events, but sometimes newer programs, and groups of potential competition players want to get a feel for how a rated chess tournament is conducted, so they also do unrated events upon request. All Rated events are run by USCF certified tournament directors, and experienced organizers. The events follow USCF tournament rules.
Swiss Style Games
Most all chess events will be Swiss styled. This means that every player will play an opponent each round. Each round, players are paired with an opponent based on their national rating to assist in making

Timing Codes
Timing codes are established to determine how long each game will last in a section. Each player will get the same amount of time per round to play their side. For example, each player might get 30 minutes plus a 5 second delay for the entirety of their game. They will use a chess clock that counts down from 30 and stops each time they finish their move. This event is following the predetermined timing code guidelines the Quad A coaches agreed to this summer. Timing codes are determined by grade level.
How opponents are determined
Each section is based on grade level. The K-3 section allows for Kindergartners through 3rd graders to play together, the K-5 section allows for Kindergartners through 5th grade to play together, and so forth. However, players can only play up. No player can play below their grade level in a section. There are more specific rules found in the KCA Bluebook for coaches, parents, and players to familiarize themselves with as they compete.
Prizes
There are often prizes for rated events. Scholastic prizes are usually awards like ribbons, medals, and trophies for individuals and teams within a section. Open events are often cash prizes for each section and are based on a players rating. For more information about WKC and upcoming tournaments, or to request private, group, family or school lessons and classes please visit westkychess.com and follow their Facebook page, @westkychess.

Directing this production has been an absolute treat for me, and I cannot wait to see these students shine even brighter come show time!”

Freshman Fallout Understanding the First Year College Experience
I
t seems like yesterday…you were moving your child into a cramped college dorm. There were tears and hugs and smiles and more hugs. It is a time of joy and pride at the accomplishment and the milestone in development. You probably breathed a sigh of relief that your family was entering a new phase that had long been worked toward and looked forward to.
College life is demanding
Unfortunately, the excitement may not last for the new college freshman. About this time of the first semester, many students begin to have difficulty adjusting. College life is demanding in many ways that may be a surprise to both you and the new student. Being responsible for laundry, cleaning, food, shopping, and finances, (combined with a demanding class load and social pressures,) may prove overwhelming to some young adults. Many may be lonely because they are far away from family and friends who served as a support system. Some parents may literally get a call from their child ‘begging’ to come home because “I hate it here!” For other families, the first indication that there is an adjustment problem may be that first visit home during fall break or the holidays.
It takes time to adjust
Maladjustment issues in new college students are common and you should not panic. You should also not ignore the signs. What is the most effective way to deal with this difficult situation? You may initially feel frustrated and angry, especially if your family sacrificed financially for this young adult to pursue this journey. But now is not the time to address that. Your child needs your help, even if he or she seems distant, unappreciative, or even resentful. The family needs to rally in support of the struggling college student. This is a pivotal point. Your child can overcome this adjustment hurdle and go on to fulfill his or her academic and professional dreams. Or, your child can abandon all of those goals due to feeling overwhelmed, criticized, and perceiving his or herself as a failure.
Your previously well-groomed offspring may have taken on an unkempt appearance. He/she may show significant weight gain or loss. They may have trouble sleeping or sleep too much. You may notice signs of reckless behavior, such as use of illegal substances or abuse of alcohol. Around this time, some begin to miss classes from over sleeping or being unprepared for an exam. A lack of motivation to do anything may be prominent. Grades may be falling at an alarming rate to both student and parents. Often, there is a notable change in mood that can present as depression, anxiety, irritability, or anger.

Keep communication open
Encourage open discussion by not being judgmental and critical. Give your child an opportunity to tell you what the concerns are. If he or she knows that you are willing to listen and offer loving support, it will keep the lines of communication open. Thank goodness for cell phones - you are only a push button away. Help with establishing a plan to succeed on a daily basis. The plan should include things like time management, anticipating and brainstorming around obstacles, and breaking what seem like major tasks into smaller more manageable ones. This will give your child a sense of control and reduce their perception of being overwhelmed.
Seek professional help
If you feel you have offered all the moral and practical support you can, and your student is still suffering from maladjustment, you may need to seek the help of a professional. Most universities have a Psychological Center where students can go for help at minimal or no charge. They are staffed by graduate level psychology students who are supervised by Doctors of Psychology who are Licensed Clinical Psychologists. If a student has concerns about privacy because he or she may be in class with a care provider, it is always an option see a Psychologist in private practice.
An adjustment period
Now, a word of encouragement: Many college students experience adjustment problems during their first semester. Most of the time, (especially if professional help is sought,) adjustment improves along with all of the associated issues of concern. You can then send your child back off to college with another hug, another smile, another “I’m so proud of you,” and with a sigh of relief that this time is probably lasting.

Foot and Ankle Disorders are Common in Young Children & Pre-Teens
S
ome pediatric foot and ankle conditions are visible at birth, others are not visible until the child begins walking, and some don’t show up until pre-teen age.
Treatment of pediatric disorders is recommended as soon as the condition appears. If your child is experiencing pain or difficulty walking, or if you’re concerned about the appearance or flexibility of your child’s foot, you should never wait to contact a foot and ankle specialist, to prevent more lengthy treatment down the road. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment to address any concern. Below are condition and treatment descriptions of a few common pediatric foot and ankle conditions.
NEW-BORN CONDITION - Metatarsus Adductus
CONDITION: If a child has a foot that turns inward at birth, he or she may have Metatarsus Adductus. This is a foot deformity that affects only the front half of the foot. This genetic condition is fairly common. TREATMENT: If the foot is flexible and there are no difficulties straightening it or moving in different directions, it may not require any treatment – but, it should be closely observed as your child grows. If problems with their gait, or pain when walking, treatment is required. A foot and ankle specialist should be contacted to assess the condition and determine the appropriate treatment. A common first treatment approach is to teach stretching exercises that can be at administered at home, to help the foot adjust to a normal position. In some cases, the child may wear a splint or special shoes to hold the foot in the correct position. Surgery is rarely needed. If deemed necessary, it will be delayed until the child is 4-6 years of age. It is critical that a child with this condition is seen by a specialist and monitored as they grow because patients with Metatarsus Adductus often have significant foot issues later in life without proper treatment from the beginning.
PEDIATRIC CONDITION - Pediatric Flatfoot
CONDITION: Typically, arches do not develop in children until the age of 3 or 4. Pediatric Flatfoot is characterized by the partial or total collapse of the arch in the feet. Some children experience no negative symptoms while others experience pain and a limitation of activity. Symptoms of pediatric flatfoot may include pain, tenderness,
cramping, fatigue, awkwardness in walking, difficulty wearing shoes in physical activities. TREATMENT: The severity of your child’s symptoms will determine the treatment plan. For children with no painful symptoms, treatment includes merely an observation of their growth or potentially custom orthotics, depending on severity of the condition. An accurate diagnosis by a foot and ankle specialist is the first step in helping your child with pediatric flatfoot. The physician will examine your child’s foot while standing, walking and sitting. X-rays will be taken to determine the severity of the problem. The condition will be diagnosed, and appropriate treatment will be offered. Treatment can include custom orthotics, physical therapy, shoe modifications, and temporary use of anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain.
PRE-TEEN CONDITION - Pediatric Heel Pain
CONDITION: A common question parents approach a Foot and Ankle Specialist with is “Why does my child complain of heel pain?” There are numerous causes for pediatric heel pain. The most common cause is Sever’s disease. It most often affects 8-14 year olds who are involved sports that involve a good deal of running and jumping. The cause is an inflammatory condition affecting the growth plate in the back of the heel at the point where the Achilles tendon inserts. This condition is often accompanied by tightness of the Achilles tendon and characterized by swelling and tenderness of the heels. TREATMENT: While there are no long-term effects of this disease – only temporary pain while your child is involved in physical activities an exam by a Foot and Ankle Specialist is recommended to insure the pain is not caused by a more serious condition. Prescribed treatment for pediatric heel pain is icing and rest, the use of heel lifts to keep strain off of the Achilles, possible use of orthotics, and immobilization if needed. A foot specialist can also teach different kinds of exercises that can be done at home as well as prescribe heel pads or arch supports in your child’s footwear. Other more serious causes of heel pain in children include: Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, and fractures which are often the result of an overuse injury due to frequent and repeated stress on the feet.
