ctober is one of my favorite months. Cooler, sunny weather means I can ride my bike more often, do some gardening, and enjoy my deck. There’s nothing more relaxing on a cool fall evening than reading a book in my chair hammock! October is also the month of my birthday and the anniversary of my first cancer diagnosis. My breast cancer was found by a routine mammogram. It wouldn’t be October if I didn’t remind all my readers to schedule their annual exams. Yes, all my readers – I have several male friends who have had breast cancer! (While men don’t need to get mammograms, they do need to report any lumps, bumps or unusual lymph nodes.) The magazine is full of breast cancer information, tips, and advice. Cancer is curable – I should know, I’ve had it twice! So, if you’re postponing your mammogram because of fear, we hope our articles this month will help you. Have a happy, safe and healthy October and enjoy the many fall activities, and Halloween events this year.

eather Abanatha, her husband Gary and three-year-old son Colt, are heading to the dirt road - The Dirt Road Boutique that is! The store has been in business for over a year now and it’s bursting with fall fashions, fun accessories and so much more!
A Mobile Boutique The Dirt Road Boutique began as a great idea for a mobile truck boutique. Abanatha, who has over 20 years in retail, saw a huge black fashion truck in Nashville. “The idea just grabbed me,” she says. “I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness – this is me!’” After walking through the store on wheels and talking to the owners she came back to Paducah with a new goal and obsession. “We took our tax return and bought a truck,” said Abanatha.” My husband is a mechanic so we rebuilt it ourselves. We put in a tile floor and dressing rooms, and then I went to market to stock it with clothing and accessories!” Abanatha parked the truck, which she calls ‘Betsy,’ in strategic places around McCracken county and shared her unique style and friendly smile with new customers. The most memorable location was probably the mall where she parked overnight on Black Friday! The truck was a big hit but it just wasn’t big enough for all the great clothing Abanatha wanted to share with her customers.
A Permanent Location A small store became available on North 32nd Street, right near Pizza by the Pound. Abanatha pounced on it! “I thought it wouldn’t be too much work,” she said. “It was just a little store for the overflow of merchandise from the truck.” The Dirt Road Boutique added its permanent location in July 2014 and quickly grew out of the “small” store!
When the adjoining store front became available in March 2015, Abanatha took the opportunity to lease the space. “The previous business was a hair salon,” she explained. “They left on a Monday and we opened the following Friday. In just four days we tore out sinks and fixtures and laid down new carpet. I was on a mission! I just love our midtown location near the old Coca-Cola building. We’re on a busy road that’s a cut-through to Park Avenue so we get a lot of traffic.
Affordable Fashion The Dirt Road offers affordable fashion with all items priced at $40 and under. “Our focus is to give great customer service and help you find the perfect outfit for any occasion at a great price,” said Abanatha. “We carry a wide selection in sizes small to 3X. We specialize in styles that are easy to wear from day to night.” “The Dirt Road carries dresses, shoes, tops, boots, coats, scarves, leggings, socks, sweaters, camisoles, bras and accessories. No need to shop in lots of places – we have it all right here! We can help you put just the right outfit together without ever leaving the store!”
Fashion Forward “I don’t go to market and buy ‘filler.’ I believe that all our pieces are fun and wearable. I make a huge effort to have products that are unique to this area. I really enjoy shopping the fashion show in Atlanta and finding the latest styles and fashions. It helps me a lot to be there and

e think five years is a solid basis for a new Paducah tradition. It’s time to break out your lederhosen and your dirndl, and head on down to Maiden Alley Cinema. They’re gearing up for the 5th annual Maiden Alley Oktoberfest to be held from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, October 17. Begun in 2011 with a little over 150 participants, this fun and unique event has increased in attendance every year. Last year it drew a crowd of over 600 merry souls! But this year has many new additions to ensure it’s the best Oktoberfest yet. New music, additional breweries, art vendors and an enhanced Oktoberfest Beer Dinner to kickoff the event are all on the agenda.
Cafe & Catering. With traditional German fare, this dinner will be a great way to get prepped for the festivities on Saturday. This event will highlight Schlafly Beer with a four-course menu and a beer pairing with each course. The event will be hosted right outside Kirchhoff's back door, with music by Kevin Howard, from Letcher County, Kentucky. Howard is a singer, banjo player, and guitarist. Tickets for this inaugural event are $45. “We are very excited about the beer dinner this year,” Executive Director of MAC Landee Bryant told me. “Anita White of Gold Rush is going to do an amazing job and her mother is even coming in from Germany to help.”
New Oktoberfest Beer Dinner Kick off a great weekend with the Oktoberfest Beer Dinner on Friday, October 16 at 7pm with a meal created by Anita White of Gold Rush

Saturday is when the big fun begins! This year Oktoberfest will be an hour longer. Additionally, the event
order to gain access to the Maiden Alley Oktoberfest activities, you’ll need to buy a ticket.
German Car Show “There are several vendors participating including some that will be doing demonstrations,” Bryant dished. “We’ll have a variety; everything from jewelry to clothing, to ceramics and live flower, head wreaths. You can find it all! There will also be a German Car Show on Kentucky Avenue.”
Appropriate Attire!
has added four breweries to accompany Schlafly Beer, which has been with the event since the its inception. The breweries will present a variety of beer styles at the event. • Schlafly Beer from St. Louis, will be serving Oktoberfest and Kolsch. • Dry Ground Brewing Company from Paducah, will be serving their Preacher Pilsner and Fresh Plowed Saison. • Paducah Beer Werks from Paducah, will be serving Pale Ale and Golden Ale. • West Sixth Brewing out of Lexington, will be pouring an IPA and Lemongrass American Wheat. • Tin Man Brewing Company from Evansville, will be serving a Herald Imperial Pumpkin and Circuit Bohemian Pilsner.
Kentucky Common Beer
Dressing up in traditional German garments is optional, but Bryant encourages it. “The first year, I was the only person in costume and I had the most fun!” she told me. “I actually wore lederhosen, which is traditional for men, but the leather shorts and suspenders appealed to me. Then the next year a few more dressed up and I wore my lederhosen again (which I rented from Creatures of Habit). But in the third year, I decided to switch over to a dirndl, which was a lot less restricting. Each year it has become more popular and quite a few people show up in traditional German clothing. I really hope that trend continues. I love dressing up and I hope that others will realize that it truly gets you in the spirit and makes the day more authentic.” Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased online at maidenalleycinema.com, or by visiting Roof Brothers Wine & Spirits, Max's Brick Oven, Etcetera Coffeehouse, Gold Rush Cafe, Dry Ground Brewery, Bricolage Art Collective or Maiden Alley Cinema. Currently tickets are now $35, but will be $42 on the day of the event. Each ticket purchase includes a 24-ounce commemorative beer stein, one fill-up, a Bavarian food spread, live music from six acts and a day v of great fun. Just remember - it’s beer, sausage, dance repeat!
Two of the breweries are collaborating to bring the event the best brew yet. Schlafly Beer and Dry Ground Brewing Company have joined forces to create a collaboration beer in the Kentucky Common style as well. Kentucky Common Beer is a once-popular style of ale from the area in and around Louisville, from the 1850s until Prohibition. This style is rarely brewed commercially today.
Sausage, Pretzels & Strudel! As if all that great beer wasn't enough, there will be amazing food prepared, as always, by the crew at Kirchhoff's Bakery & Deli. The cooking will be overseen by the diligent hands and eyes of Ginny Kirchhoff, Josh Ryan and Louie Kirchhoff,. They always prepare a Bavarian spread worthy of a gold medal. A minimum of six different sausage varieties, plenty of pretzels, cheeses, perhaps some beef tongue, strudel - the list goes on and on!
LIVE @ MAC It wouldn't be Maiden Alley Oktoberfest without an amazing live music lineup. This year includes local favorites Jessica Lee Wilkes, Solid Rock’it Boosters, Paducah Jazz Ensemble Polka Band, and Chris Black and the Eagles of Unemployment. The Loot Rock Gang from St. Louis, and Curio out of Chicago, will round out the amazing line-up of music.
Art Vendors Festivities will take place in the area between Maiden Alley Cinema and Kirchhoff's Deli, as well as the adjacent portion of Market House Square. On the east side of Market House Square there will be art vendors selling their wares and putting on demonstrations throughout the day. This part of the event is free and open to the public, but in

ow many times do I have to say this to everyone – please get your mammogram! Because, as we know, when it comes to cancer, early detection is the key. Screening exams for breast cancer are designed to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms (like a lump that can be felt). Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. Following the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that it can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully, which saves countless lives each year.

Don’t Wait For Symptoms Women without breast symptoms should follow the ACS recommendations for early breast cancer detection. Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.
40 and Over – A Mammogram Every Year There is mounting evidence that mammograms offer substantial benefit for women in their 40s. However, mammograms also have limitations. A mammogram can miss some cancers, and it may lead to follow up of findings that are not cancer. Women should be aware of the benefits and limitations linked with yearly mammograms. But despite their limitations, mammograms are still a very
effective and valuable tool for decreasing suffering and death from breast cancer. Mammograms should be continued and age alone should not be the reason to stop having regular mammograms. Women later in life or with serious health problems should discuss with their doctors whether to continue having mammograms.
20s & 30s – A CBE every 3 years Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a periodic (regular) health exam by a health professional preferably every 3 years. Starting at age 40, women should have a CBE by a health professional every year. CBE is done along with mammograms and offers a chance for women, and their doctor or nurse, to discuss changes in their breasts, early detection testing, and factors in the woman’s history that might make her more likely to have breast cancer. The chance of breast cancer occurring is very low for women in their 20s and gradually increases with age. It’s vital that you promptly report any new breast symptoms to your doctor or nurse
ting your annual mammogram easier. They offer extended weekday and Saturday hours at two convenient locations, at the Marshall Nemer Pavilion and the Lourdes Medical Pavilion. You can now schedule mammograms without a doctor’s referral, called self-referral mammography. "We understand that having a mammogram can be scary for some people or difficult to work into your schedule,” said Amy Manley, RN, Nurse Navigator at the Lourdes Women’s Center. “But, remember, 15 minutes could save your life!"
3D Mammography Services The Lourdes Women’s Center also offers tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography services, for all screening mammograms. The 3D machine uses low doses of radiation to take multiple x-ray images of each breast from many angles. This state-of-the-art approach provides better images to detect breast disease, as well as reduces the number of call-backs for additional screenings. "With our new 3D Mammography you can be assured you are receiving the highest quality of care," explained Courtney Leneave, RN, Nurse Navigator at the Lourdes v Women’s Center.
Lourdes Nurse Navigators Lourdes Women's Center offers nurse navigators to its patients free of charge. Breast cancer patients are paired with one of the Women’s Center’s two dedicated nurse navigators. They provide medical guidance, emotional support and educational assistance right from the moment of diagnosis.

But when things don’t turn out the way Nancy planned, will Christmas still be splendiferous? This energetic and colorful produc-

yeCare Associates of Kentucky has a mission - to improve the health of the community and provide the highest quality of care for each and every individual they serve. The network of 11 optometrists and an ophthalmologist at EyeCare Associates
are fully integrated in all five locations. They work as a team to deliver cost effective care using advanced diagnostic technologies. “We are unique in our care because we are all integrated,’ says Dr. Joe Ellis, an optometrist from the Benton office. “We are able to work as a team to ensure that our patients are given the highest quality of care.” The doctors at EyeCare Associates offer comprehensive medical eye care services for your entire family. It’s often difficult for patients to travel long distances for an eye exam but EyeCare Associates have five conveniently located offices in the Purchase Area. They can offer front line care and manage conditions such as hypertension, glaucoma and macular degeneration. “Your eyes are the window to your health,” says Dr. David Jaco, optometrist at EyeCare Associates. “By looking at your eyes, a trained optometrist can diagnose hypertension, diabetes, and many other conditions. If the professionals at EyeCare Associates see evidence of diabetes during your eye exam, we can check your blood sugar and make sure you are seen by your physician immediately. We are so much more than eye care!”
Advanced Diagnostic Equipment As technology evolves, so does health care. EyeCare Associates has equipped all their offices with the latest in advanced diagnostic equipment. Whatever technology you need, EyeCare Associates’ trained professionals can guide you through testing and treatment.
Integrated Medical Records Systems EyeCare Associates uses an advanced electronic health record system specifically designed for eye care professionals. Contact Lenses The team of doctors and staff at EyeCare Associates strive to stay at the forefront of advancements in contact lens technology. They offer a wide selection including daily wear and extended contact lenses that fit every lifestyle. Their doctors have been trained to fit custom rigid gas permeable lenses, orthokeratology, as well as scleral lenses. Their goal is to make their patient’s lens wearing experience the best it can be. They have contacts available to target specific eye problems such as dry eyes, astigmatism, difficulty reading, and eye diseases like keratoconus.
The 25 days of Christmas Not only do the doctors and staff at EyeCare Associates care about their patient’s eye health, they care about their community. Each year, during the month of December, their team of optometrists perform free comprehensive eye exams for uninsured patients. I Found a Lump – What I Should Do Next? The first thing you should do is call your doctor’s office and make an appointment. They should be very accommodating and schedule an exam as soon as possible. They’ll perform a clinical breast exam and set up imaging, and possibly a second opinion.

ame three things that you never seem to have enough of? I will bet you that at least one of those three is either time or money. Am I right? Be honest. I know both of those are on my list and I hope I can help you save some of each.
We’re All Too Busy! Like most many people, my wife and I have busy lives. There’s our civic obligations, family and social commitments, house and yard maintenance and much more! IZt’s hard to find some quality time with your family or significant other, let alone cook healthy meals! Ever increas-

ing demands on our time and rising prices on everything (except gasoline of late) are stressful. The temptation for many of us is to grab some fast food, or a prepackaged meal at the grocery. If we can afford to, we might get take-out from a restaurant or a pre-made meal from a caterer or deli. You can even hire someone to do the shopping and cooking duties, and we now have services like this in western Kentucky. One such company is called Family Thyme which is owned and operated by Colton Lyles. Colton is a chef who specializes in prepar-
ing economical meals for families. I recently sat down with Colton to chat about the ways we can eat healthy meals, send time with our families and stretch our budgets. We came up with some simple techniques and tricks to get the most of your time and dollar and have some left over for the things you want to do with the family.
into another meal. (Leftover veggies or meat, the last of the celery, carrots onions etc.)
A Plan or a Menu
After removing the meat from the poaching broth and bone from the chicken, make a lot of stock - three of four quarts at least. Add some fresh vegetables, the chicken bones and seasoning to the pot and allow it to simmer for a several hours. The resulting stock will be flavorful and you aren’t out any additional money.
Colton and I agree that you must have a plan or a menu. Planning menus will help you realize how much time you spend cooking each day and how much money you spend on food. By thinking ahead and doing a little bit of planning, you can make several dishes that have common ingredients at the same time. Or, prepare some of the basic ingredients that take time to cook. You can also tailor your plan to foods that are in season or on sale. Stick to the list and you will also decrease impulse buying.
The stock can be used to prepare the soup or the gravy for the pot pies or it can be frozen for later use. Now pat yourself on the back - you didn’t waste those leftover vegetables and you just saved several dollars making your next batch of chicken soup.
I don’t plan my menus as much as I used to so I keep certain items stocked in my kitchen which gives me a bit more flexibility. But if you are on a budget, you really should plan your shopping and make every dollar count. Lord knows - money isn’t growing on trees!
Clearance Bin Divers Clearance bins and the “manager’s specials” are little bonuses when trying to stretch your dollars. I’ve picked up meat on “Manager’s Special” that is close to its ‘sell by’ date. But a ‘sell by’ date doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily ‘bad’. However, you do want to use it promptly or, when possible, freeze it.
Rice Verses Potatoes Rice is a very versatile starch and can be used in many dishes. Pound for pound compared to other starches it’s much cheaper. It can be prepared in large quantities and kept in the refrigerator.
There is probably a clearance section, or bin, in the store where you are shopping. Check it out. Take a couple of minutes to look since you are already there. It can save you serious dollars!
Buy and Cook in Bulk Buying and cooking in bulk is another way to save time and money. This idea goes directly back to the menu planning that you did for the week. For example, if you are going to make chicken pot pies, chicken enchiladas, and chicken and rice soup this week. You can buy several ingredients you will need in bulk to save money - and cook them simultaneously to save time. Don’t buy three separate packs of chicken! Shops the sales and you can probably get a family pack of chicken for all three dishes at a lower price per serving. A 10 pound bag of leg quarters can generally be purchased for around $6 or less on sale. You can poach or boil all, or most of, the chicken at one time. This will give you a lot of cooked chicken (a basis for a good chicken stock) and save time.
Make a Stock Having some stock in the fridge or freezer is a great way to make soup quickly or for use in other dishes and gravies. It’s much healthier and cost effective than the canned stuff and can be used to turn leftovers

A big time saver is cooking rice in a large batch. Cooking a pot of rice takes between 30 and 40 minutes depending on the type of rice. It doesn’t take any longer to cook a pound of rice than it does to cook a cup of rice. In our example, you can use rice in all the dishes mentioned previously. You can also use that cooked rice to make a nice rice pudding for dessert.
Pork Loin Chops Here’s another way to save a lot of money - shop the sales. Do you like pork chops? I do and I like a nice thick boneless one, typically broiled. But I don’t go to the local market to buy a couple of 1 inch or thicker chops. When whole pork loins come on sale for around $2 per pound I buy one, even if I’m not going to cook pork that week. A typically pork loin will run between five to seven pounds. You are probably saying I will never eat seven pounds of pork - but think about it. At $2 per pound it costs between $10 -$14 for the loin. After removing the slivery sinew on the outside of the loin and some of the fat, you can get five or six, one inch thick chops as well as a roast to feed three or four people. Center cut boneless pork chops will cost $3.50 or more per pound if you are only buying a couple at a time. So let’s do the math - don’t be afraid it’s pretty simple! You can get four pork chops for $10 or you can get six chops and a roast for the same money plus a few minutes of your time. This is the perfect time to multitask by cleaning the loin while you are in the kitchen cooking the chicken or rice for the next week. Split the chops and roast up, then freeze them in convenient sizes for your needs.
Beans and Rice Another great way to stretch your dollar is cooking dried beans. Pound for pound, you can’t beat the price per serving of beans and rice which can be a main course or a flavorful side item. You can season the food they way you like it and know what you are eating. I’m an old country boy and one of my favorite meals is a pot of black-eyed peas and rice with a side of corn bread. Oh, I’m getting hungry. Colton and I agree that this isn’t rocket science. A bit of planning and a little knowledge are great places to begin to stretch your dollars and time. Multi-tasking is something we all do, but have you learned to do it while cooking? Good luck and I hope you save a bit of time and money from these hints. If you have any helpful suggestions or requests for iCook topics, please contact me at icook@allgoodmedia.net v

Editor’s Note: The Best Buddies organization is near and dear to my heart. My son John has been involved with their San Francisco chapter for the last few years. It’s made a tremendous difference to his life: He has made life-long friends and learned invaluable social skills. Our closest chapter is based in Murray, which is little far for a developmentally challenged adult from Paducah to travel. But perhaps if enough of us call the state office, we might get an a chapter started in Paducah. If you’re interested in starting a Best Buddies Program in McCracken County please call the magazine office.
Jobs, Ambassadors and Promoters Best Buddies’ has eight formal programs: Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e-Buddies®, Jobs, Ambassadors, and Promoters. They positively impact nearly 900,000 individuals, with and without disabilities, worldwide. As a result of their involvement with Best Buddies, people with IDD have been able to secure reward-
M
ost all of us have a best buddy: Someone who we call friend; someone who loves us; someone we share our hopes and dreams with; someone who is just a confidant and partner. Where most of us have that, there are many who don’t including some individuals with an intellectual or physical disability. That’s where the Best Buddies program can come in to the save the day .
What is Best Buddies? Best Buddies® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, son of Eunice Kennedy Shriver who founded Special Olympics. The organization is dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). That sounds like a mouthful but what it means is that people with IDD partner up with another peer to share fun, social events and friendship. Best Buddies Kentucky also offers leadership training and opportunities for public speaking. Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to almost 1,900 middle school, high school, and college chapters worldwide. Best Buddies programs has participants in each of the 50 United States, and over 50 countries around the world.

ing jobs, live independently, become inspirational leaders, and make lifelong friendships. Although Best Buddies has advanced tremendously in its short existence, many areas of the country and many regions of the world still lack programs to help people with IDD become part of mainstream society. Chapters like the one at Murray State University are helping to bridge those gaps.
• •
Leadership development Integrated employment
Best Buddies’ one-to-one commitment in their friendship programs focuses on social inclusion through peer-to-peer relationships. The program fosters friendships in safe environments between people with and without IDD. Their approach is to bring people together that might otherwise not interact. They encourage friendships that can continue beyond their participation in Best Buddies’ programs.
Why Best Buddies? Best Buddies provides tools for people with IDD to become more independent and more included in their community. They do this in three ways: • One-to-one friendships
Best Buddies in Western Kentucky Two of our local universities have Best Buddies chapters: Murray State University and Western Kentucky University. Sarah Willmore is the president of Best Buddies MKY at MSU. Her chapter is currently planning an event for Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) for October.
Murray State University “We will have a table set up for the event in our Student Hub which is the center of campus where students congregate most,” said Willmore. “On campus, this is usually where the main cafeteria is, close to the coffee shops, and main offices. When students stop by we can explain DEAM to them, and introduce them to Best Buddies. We hope to spark their interest and get them involved.” Best Buddies MKY at MSU are also planning to incorporate their message into the annual talent show that will be held on October 16th. The talent show is a great opportunity for chapter members to introduce the ideas of Best Buddies and disability awareness to the many students, professors, and Greek members who come out to the event. ”Our Buddy director and I will be doing a collaborative speech between two of the acts in our talent show,” said Willmore. “The Buddy director is someone who has an intellectual disability and speaks as an advocate for our chapter. This speech will be about our experiences in Best Buddies, and will include information about Disability Employment Awareness Month.”
Western Kentucky University Nicole Stephens is the Best Buddies chapter president at WKU. Their chapter will be participating in a Buddy Walk at 9 am on October 24. It is a walk held at the Hot Rods Baseball Stadium in Bowling Green and hosted by the organization Down Syndrome of South Central Kentucky. ”Our chapter’s Host Site Coordinator Jane Tichenor, is also the director of the Buddy House here in Bowling Green,” explained Stephens. She plays

a huge role in putting this on each year. Stephens always makes sure that WKU Best Buddies has a booth before the walk starts and allows us to walk together as a chapter during the walk. This year, our booth will be dedicated to making signs for people to hold during the walk.” “We will also be having a Costume Match Party in October (date TBD) at Jackson's Orchard. This is where our ‘buddies’ will find out who their ‘peer buddy’ is. We will most likely repeat the same theme as last year where ‘peer buddies’ dress up in costume and purchase matching accessories for their ‘buddy.’ They put those accessories in a bag with their buddy’s name on it, and that's how the ‘buddy’ finds out who their ‘peer buddy’ is. It makes the evening such a great time for everyone.”
e-Buddies Many people in our area would love to see a Best Buddies chapter established in McCracken County. In lieu of not having a current chapter here, you can participate in an online program called e-Buddies. eBuddies promotes social inclusion online for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities just like Best Buddies does. The e-Buddies program helps people with, and without, IDD (such as autism and Down syndrome) come together online. There they can form friendships and be a part of a community that celebrates their diversity of character and abilities. Anyone can be in e-Buddies. You can join on your own or sign up your special education class. Please visit ebuddies.org for more information. For additional information on Best Buddies, how to get one in our area, or how you can volunteer, visit bestbuddieskentucky.org and their Facebook page at facebook.com/bestbuddieskentucky. v

he Paducah Parks Services Annual Halloween Story Contest has picked their winners! Once again PAF is delighted to publish these budding authors. Mallory Gentry and her co-workers, as well as a few volunteers from PTHS, read every single entry as usual and were amazed at the creativity. Over 30 entries were received from Clark Elementary, Concord Elementary, Heath Elementary, Heath Middle, Morgan Elementary and Homeschool students. It was another great year! Just to recap the rules: Each story had to begin with, “I woke up to the sound of …” and be no longer then 600 words. Congratulations to this year’s winners!
8th grade winners 1st place – Jennah Hottel, Homeschool, “King Halloween” 2nd place – Justin Goins, Heath Middle School, “The Hunt”
Cuddles by Death Taryn Tucker, 3rd Grade I woke up to the sound of squeaking. I looked at the clock as it was one hour ‘till Halloween. I realized what the squeaking was – my dog and his chew toy. Since I was already awake, I got up to get a drink of water. I heard footsteps coming from the next hall. I was so scared, as scared as I could be.
3rd grade winners 1st place – Taryn Tucker, Morgan Elementary, “Cuddles by Death” 2nd place – Ellie Farley, Clark Elementary, “It’s Coming from the Closet” 3rd place – Daniel Crouse, Concord Elementary, “Too Much Candy”
I heard voices that got louder and louder and louder. I hid in the closet by the kitchen. Then it was right in front of me. Something opened the door, but it was just my little sister, Izzy. She said it was time to get our Halloween costumes on and go wake up our mom.
4th grade winners 1st place – Sydney Bell, Heath Elementary, “Legends of Halloween” 2nd place – Emma Bell, Heath Elementary, “The Ghostly Spirit” 3rd place – Emme Seaton, Concord Elementary, “Sabrina, the Witch”

We all headed for Jackson Street, the best street to get candy on. I saw a big, dusty, dark, creepy house and my mom said, “Let’s go on to that one.” I said OK but did not want to go. I was really scared and so was Izzy. We got out of the car and walked up to the door. There was a sign that said COME IN. Now at this point I was getting even more scared but my mom told me to stop being a scared-cat. That’s when we went in. A few steps in my sister picked up a bear named Cuddles. It started to
sing, “Come and play! Come and play!” I took the bear from my sister Izzy and threw it. We tried to run out of the house quickly. Just as Izzy made it to the door, the bear stood up and grabbed her. I ran up there and punched the bear in the face so we could escape. We drove off and finally went to bed. That was the last we saw of that bear. I hope, I hope. Except, later we found it in the kitchen. The next morning we took it to the orphanage. That was the worst Halloween ever.
Legends of Halloween Sydney Bell, 4th Grade I woke up to the sound of spooky music. I looked at the alarm clock and it was past midnight. It was Halloween! I love Halloween! I love all the spooky legends even though I know they are not true. I was so excited that I put on my costume on already. I went downstairs and couldn’t believe that everyone else was awake already. My sister Emma Said, “It’s about time you woke up, you’ve slept all day! It’s time to go trick-or-treating. “We met up with our friends, Maddison and Addy, to go trick-or treating. We met at the park and it as dark and spooky. We headed out to a street called Spook Street because there are lots of houses on it. As soon as we stepped onto Spook Street the ground started shaking, and I heard the same spooky music that has woken me up. Everybody screamed and a very bright light appeared. “RUN!!” I screamed. A strange voice said, “NO, YOU’RE NOT GONG ANYWHERE!!!” We turned around and saw a ghost, vampire, mummy, zombie, and some kind of pumpkin freak! “AHH,” we yelled. We all ran around in circles screaming like maniacs! The ghost floated above us and said, “No, wait, please! We need your help!” I stopped running and said, “Wait…what? You need our help? You’re not going to hurt us?” The vampire said, “Everyone has stopped liking Halloween except for you guys. Some guy with a mask and chainsaw ruined it for us! We need your help making Halloween fun again.” We said, “OK, what do we need to do?” The freaky pumpkin dude said, “All you have to do is to get rid of the chainsaw guy and everyone will forget about him and like Halloween again.” Just then we were teleported into a dark cave. All we could hear was a creepy breathing noise like Darth Vader was hiding in the dark. We remembered that we had flashlight and turned them on to find the guy with the chainsaw staring art us! Suddenly swords appeared in our hands, we fought him, and won the battle. Halloween was saved! We were teleported back to Spook Street and found that everyone was out trick-or-treating now. So now we know that the legends of vampires, ghosts, zombie’s mummies, and even freaky pumpkin dudes are real!
The Girl on Hallow Drive Jessa Goins, 5th Grade I woke up to the sound of a screeching owl outside my window. When I got up and looked around, I saw that my whole house had been decorated with things like bats, spiders, and black cats. It was Halloween, my favorite time of year.

At 7 o'clock, it was time to go trick or treating with my friends, Molly and Brooke. My older sister was taking us this year, and I was so happy that it was hard to contain my excitement! There was a full moon, which was perfect for a Halloween night. It was beautiful, I thought to myself.
“Shhh!” he hissed. I started to scream again but something else popped out and covered my mouth- a hideous creature in an overcoat. It picked me up and jumped out the window, Jack-o-lantern following. We ran right through the pumpkin patch, smashing pumpkins. “Let me go!” the jack-o-lantern jumped to my face.
The three of us decided that to make it an even better Halloween night, we should visit a street we had never been down before, Hallow Drive. Other people had said that this street was very dark and scary, and that no one ever went trick or treating there. I had even heard a story about a girl like us who went down that street and never came back, and to this day no one knows where she is. At first, I thought no way, I am never going down that street. But then my sister said those stories are ridiculous and there's nothing wrong with that street. She told us its part of the fun to be a little scared on Halloween. So with her encouragement, we held hands and started walking down the long, dark road. We looked around and saw that the houses were decorated for Halloween. Molly said if the people in the houses decorated for Halloween, it must not be so bad. We walked up to the first house and knocked on the door. It was a crooked old house with squeaky stairs. I looked at my friends and said, "Why did I agree to come here?" Then we saw another girl there dressed as a ghost. She offered to share her candy, and asked if she could go with us. The four of us walked to every house on the street, getting candy and having a great time. We were so happy to have made this new friend. When we came to the last house, an old couple came to the door. They looked at least 8 feet tall and were dressed as monsters. Their masks were so scary that I thought about running away, but they were nice and offered us a lot of candy. They said we were so cute and they wanted to take our picture. We all held hands and smiled for them. Then they turned their phone around so we could see the picture. There were only three of us!
“No!” he growled. Soon, I was dropped to the ground at a cave’s mouth. “Where are we? I’m going home!” I shouted. The odd creature grabbed me again. “No questions,” said Jack-o-lantern. “Or what?” “Or we’ll kill you.” He grinned maliciously. I struggled to no advantage. We trooped through the cave, and after seemingly hours, we stopped. There was a hissing sound coming from in front of us. I twisted around to look Three enormous spiders were blocking our path. I screamed, terrified. My captors ran back ducking behind a column. “Stupid girl! Now they’ll see us!” Jack-o-lantern whispers. The scuttling spiders came closer. They crawled past us, searching. Quickly, the creature and Jack-o-lantern got moving, farther into the darkness. Then the cave ended- or so I thought. Jack-o-lantern jumped up, bumping a stalactite. The wall slid up, revealing a dimly lit tunnel. They took me down the tunnel, turning sometimes, until we reach a gigantic room. A jack-o-lantern chandelier hung from the ceiling. The odd creature dropped me on the cold floor, and I stared up at a terrifying sight. In front of us was a slimy green throne. In the throne was a glowing skeleton, wearing a black robe, a fire crown, and holding a witch broom scepter. He cackled. “Good work, minions. I’ll take it from here,” he said. The creature and Jack-o-lantern nodded, and left.
We turned to see our new friend, but she was gone. The old couple said that they hadn't seen a fourth girl, only the three of us. We went back to the house we had just came from and asked if they had seen her. They said they had not seen a fourth girl either. We all looked at each other. She hadn't just been dressed as a ghost...she really was a ghost! We should have been scared, but instead we were sad. We were going to miss our new friend.
“What is going on?” I asked.
As we left the street, we looked over at a house and saw our reflection in their window. The fourth girl was there, waving at us. We all smiled and waved goodbye to her. Our ghost friend was our special secret, and we looked forward to coming back to Hallow Drive next year to see her again.
“I won’t do it.”
King Halloween Jenna Hottel, 8th Grade I woke up to the sound of unearthly breathing. It was coming from my closet. Wondering if my brother was playing a Halloween joke on me, I turned toward the closet to see two yellow glowing eyes. I screamed. A jack-o-lantern jumped out and narrowed his eyes.

“I, King Halloween,” he said, “am going to turn you into my next minion. Follow me.” Shaking, I followed him into a small room with odd things like potion bottles in it. We stopped in front of a large machine. “This is my Minionatron. Step in, and you’ll come out a minion - just like Jack-o-lantern and Boogie.”
“But you will!” he tried to shove me in. I stepped back and grabbed the closest bottle, then threw it at him. He screamed shrilly as he caught fire. When after a minute he didn’t burn, he laughed and lunged toward me. I grabbed bottle after bottle, until, just in time, one started melting him. He dissolved into a puddle of flames, and disappeared. I walked out of the cave unharmed. Wandering around, I eventually found a familiar street and went to my best friend’s house. I told her the whole story. “And then, he melted to the ground, and disappeared!” She laughed. “Always had a knack for storytelling! Too bad nothing like that ever happens.” But it did.
