Family Taking Care of Family

O

ur cover this month features Wayne and Trinidad McGee with their daughter, Grace, granddaughter Lydia Wilford and the family pup Doc. They are ready for spring with some new chicks and fresh tomato plants to add to their garden. Wayne and Trinidad McGee are the proud owners of New Haven Assisted Living; a collection of smaller, specialized assisted living facilities located throughout the state of Kentucky. New Haven facilities are located in Paducah, Kevil, Marion, Princeton, and there are two in Franklin. Each facility has a local feel and special features which make living there as close to ‘home’ as the McGees and their staff can accomplish. Each New Haven location is a unique community where the staff and clients care about each other.

Inspired by Mom!

Wayne’s mother, Frances McGee, was the inspiration for the first New Haven facility which opened in Franklin in 2000. She was always the caregiver of the family but, after a stroke, she needed help in order to live at home. “It was important to us that mom was provided with reliable, caring support from someone that had a genuine interest in her well-being,” he explained. Wayne decided to build a facility that would meet the needs of people just like his mother - a facility that someone as special as his mother would be happy to live in.

Bring Your Favorite Easy Chair

New Haven Assisted Living facilities provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their facilities have both private rooms and suites which can accommodate married couples. Residents are encouraged to bring personal items and furniture with them to New Haven. “Studies have shown the importance of having personal items around when you move to an assisted living facility,” McGee explained. “It really helps to ease the transition. We are pleased to accommodate furnishings that can fit safely into our resident’s rooms.”

6

SPRING 2018

PAFM

New Haven Assisted Living locations can help provide that continuous care which makes their clients lives comfortable and safe. “The main criterion for our clients is that they can be safely assisted from the building in the event of emergency,” explained Wayne. “As long as that’s possible, we can offer a ‘safe haven’ at New Haven!”

Personalized Care Is the Benchmark

New Haven has at least two staff members for every 11 clients (or less). “We are proud to have one of the highest staff to client ratios in the country,” Trinidad told me. “Nationally, you will find an average of one member of staff to between 13 and 20 clients. All of our locations are state licensed and inspected. Our employees receive the usual state and national training, and certification. New Haven wants to go above and beyond the standard care so we provide additional training and orientation for all staff members. Every employee is given a drug test and has their background checked.” When a new resident is considering New Haven, we meet one on one with family members,” explained Trinidad. “We want to know as much as possible about their needs and answer questions or family concerns. Our staff get to know our clients and often become friends. The staff person they most trust will be the one bathing them, or helping them into bed.” This personal approach means that staff often become an extension of the resident’s family.

Assisted Living Your Way!

The McGees and the New Haven staff take a very personal approach to caring for their clients. “Not everyone wants to eat breakfast at 7 a.m.,” Wayne explained. “We offer whatever they want for breakfast, pretty much whenever they want it. Lunches and dinner are home cooked meals, and we’re proud of our Christmas dinners each year when we invite all the clients’ family members, and show off our family recipes. My daughter loves to garden and we have been

growing home grown tomatoes which we serve at the facilities. We also have chickens so our eggs are truly farm fresh.”

"Family Taking Care of Family"

I recently sat down with Trindad McGee at New Haven’s Paducah facility. This year, she wanted to thank her family members, staff and clients. "We are very privileged and blessed to have so many families and individuals refer clients to us,” she told me. “Many of our clients find out about us through word of mouth and when friends come to visit them here. Our clients are truly family. I wish to especially thank my client Hazel Hendricks who went to be with God at the end of last year. She always believed in me. “You are already persistent,” she would tell me. “Show the world that you’re genuine as well.”” “When I started this journey with New Haven Assisted Living I really had no idea of the road that God had planned out for our family. I thought I knew all about caring for people and that it would be easy. But, along with the laughter there has also been tears.” “It’s rarely an easy decision to leave your home and go to an assisted living facility. Often that choice is made because of the declining health of a client or their spouse. Every clients’ journey is different. Some stay just a few weeks or months but others are with New Haven for several years. Each client has an individual relationship with New Haven, the staff, and with Wayne and I.”

“Losing Hazel, after our 10 year journey together, has been a great loss to my heart. I find solace in the thought that Hazel is rejoicing in Heaven and she is her with husband and sister. I still have Ms. Jernigan (5 years at New Haven) and Ms. Bonney (3 years at New Haven). We often reminisce and laugh at all our journeys.” “The hardest part of managing New Haven Assisted Living is seeing our clients decline. Some come to New Haven because they have the early stages of Alzheimer's, which is such a cruel disease. Others, such as Hazel, have Parkinson’s or ALS. That is sometimes harder, because they still have their mind but their body is not doing its part. They remember all the things they used to be able to do and no longer can. At times running an assisted living facility is a train wreck of emotions.”

Patience & Understanding

The McGee’s strive to provide support and understanding to all their residents. “Perhaps the hardest part for family members is when

Wayne & Trinidad McGee

Ms. Hazel Hendricks

“When a client has been with us for a long time, a special bond develops,” explained Trinidad. “ Ms. Hendricks moved to New Haven with her husband, Lawrence, when he needed assisted living in 2007. Sadly he passed away within just a few weeks. Ms. Hendricks did not want to return to her farm and be alone at night - and so our journey began.” “For the next 10 years New Haven Assisted Living was her home. When our child Grace was born she offered to play with Grace while I spoke to clients and gave tours to prospective families. She taught me how to can tomatoes and I still have her instructions, and recipes. One of our favorite things to do together was to drive downtown for ice cream. We would roll the car windows down. Hazel also liked to go shopping.” “After several years at New Haven, Hazel was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and her health began to decline. Then her sister, Ms. Mooneyhan, came to live at the facility as well. She was with us for a couple of years before she passed away - just 18 month prior to Hazel.”

a client doesn’t recognize them, or remember a special holiday or event,” explained Trinidad. “My advice to those who visit the elderly is to be patient and understanding. Call ahead before your visit and ask “is grandpa is having a good day.” Try and allow some flexibility in your visiting times so that you can spend time with and Mom when she’s alert and rested.” For more information please visit their website at newhavenalky. com.You may also call Wayne or Trinidad McGee at 270.559.1131, or email wpmtmm@gmail.com. ike many fortunate people, I have a bottle of fresh water on my desk right now. I often get up at night to drink a glass of crystal clear refreshment from anywhere in my house. I never thought of water as a privilege until my mission trip to a mountain village in Haiti a couple of years ago. We were told to bring bottled water for ourselves. We ran out within days and some kind villagers went on a two-day hike to buy us more. Yet, the locals continued drinking the unfiltered, dirty water that most people I know would frown at. But they didn't have a choice: it was all they had. People all around the world walk miles every day to get a drink of water, and it may not be clean when they reach it.

Healing Hands International

A lot of people in the world don't have the luxury of easily accessible, clean water like I do. Many people must walk miles each day to get their water, and even then, it may not be properly sanitized. This is why digging wells and providing water filters to people is so vital. Healing Hands International (HHI) is a Christian organization that, among other things, seeks to fight hunger, promote education, and provide clean water around the world. Because they believe that clean water is at the heart of a successful community, HHI has dug around 1,000 wells to provide this necessity for the 780 million people around the world who don't have access to water. According to their website, thousands of people die due to lack of clean water. Many of these deaths will be children. Through the funds they raise, however, they can save millions of these lives. For more information on this ministry, visit hhi.org.

Walk4Water

For the fifth year, Broadway Church of Christ in Paducah is hosting Walk4Water, the four-mile

walk to raise money and awareness about water shortages throughout our world. It is themed around the idea that those who walk do so to help persons around the world not have to walk to get water: "We walk so they don't have to". The walk is not only themed after those who must walk far to get water. Throughout the walk, participants can carry water jugs to better empathize with people who must do that to survive. On the Walk day, HHI personnel will demonstrate the filters they are able to provide around the globe. All money raised through the walk goes to HHI.

Mani Pagidipalli

Walk4Water is partnering with HHI to support missionary Mani Pagidipalli in India. Mani works in three villages which utilize filtration systems rather than wells because the ground water is contaminated. The people of these villages and the surrounding areas walk an average of four miles to get clean water (some have walked as far as 13 miles round trip). Each person carries five gallons of water home (weighing over 40 pounds). Most of the people who walk are women and children as the men stay to work and provide for the family. Because they have to walk to get water they are often robbed of the opportunity to attend schools and get an education. Walking so far for clean drinking water is one of the things that is contributing to the downward spiral of the community. Fresh water nearby would stop this cycle.

Broadway in Paducah. For return walkers, this year's route will be slightly different because of Quilt Week and the accompanying congestion. Registration will be open at 8am on the day of the walk. There is no registration fee. Instead, teams fundraise before the walk. Register your team early at hhi.org/walk4water/paducah-ky-2018 and contribute to this great cause. This year, the event seeks to raise $50,000. The money will go directly to HHI and to digging wells and providing water filters for people around the world. To donate to HHI or find out more about their work, visit hhi.org or donate on the day of the walk. For more information on this event, contact Jason Whitley at jason@broadwaycoc.com. #ilovepaducah

"Mani, with our help, can provide the people with fresh water and teach them about The Living Water which is Jesus Christ," explained Jason Whitley, Youth Minister at Broadway Church of Christ. "Last year Mani baptized 2,451 into Jesus and 48 new congregations were planted. What an amazing ministry to be a part of."

Working As A Team

“Paducah and Walk4Water make a great team,” said Whitley. “Both got their start because of the water and rely on water as their life blood. With the help of the community, the Broadway church, and Healing Hands International, we have dug three freshwater drinking wells for villages in India. The water in this region of India is contaminated polluted with extremely high levels of mercury and arsenic. With fresh water so close to home, children can attend school and families can strengthen their community.”

Let's Go Fly a Kite

K

ites have been in Japan for a very long time. A Japanese manuscript first mentioned kites about 1300 years ago. Kites came to Japan from China, and then the Japanese made kites part of their own cultural traditions. To fly a kite brought good luck or gave thanks — for a harvest, a child, a ruler. A priest might bless a stalk of rice and attach it to a kite to thank the gods for a good crop. A family might fly kites to honor the birth, or the birthday, of a child. Kites were used for practical purposes, such as lifting materials to workers during the construction of tall buildings, but they are mainly associated with religious festivals and thanks giving ceremonies.

10

SPRING 2018

PAFM

iListWesternKentucky.com

There are many different styles and types of kite, with each region of Japan having a characteristic shape. New Year kites are still flown in Japan to symbolically offer thanks for the past years' successes and in hope of a good new year. A New Year kite means much the same to a Japanese child as a birthday or Christmas present means to a Western child.

MSU's Second Annual Kite Festival

The wonderful tradition of kite flying is being brought to Murray State University (MSU) again this year. The College of Humanities and Fine Arts has partnered with the MSU Arboretum to host Murray's second International Kite Festival.

The event is being organized by Airi Yamamoto, Murray State's Japanese Outreach Coordinator, who is in Murray for two years. Her position is funded with a grant from the Japan Outreach Initiative and she’s here to foster a greater understanding of Japanese culture and traditions. The International Kite Festival will be held on Saturday, April 21, from 10am to 12pm at the MSU Arboretum. This free event is open to the community and will an especially fun day for local families. Participants can bring their own kites to fly or they can make one at the festival. There will be kite flying competitions and an award for the best handmade kite. Organizers plan to give prizes for Most Beautiful Kite, Most Creative Kite, and Highest-Flying Kite. Last year, more than 200 students and parents attended and enjoyed making kites and learning about different cultures. Organizers hailed it as a huge success.

A Passport to New Cultures

“I would love for many people in this area to come visit this event,” said Yamamoto. “As part of the festival, we will have tables/booths set up that children can visit and learn about various countries. I believe that this event will be a great opportunity for the international students and the kids in the areas to exchange cultures.” Children will receive a “passport” and can get country stamps at the many international booths. They will learn about other countries such as Japan, Hungary, China, Korea, and more. Some of the international booths will be selling food.

The popular name now for a Japanese kite is Tako - thought to be a play on the name - Tokyo where kites were very popular. The Japanese even have a word in their vocabulary Tako-Kichi which means, kite crazy. The symbol for tako is made is made from two characters: the green character means wind; the purple symbol means cloth. Put them together and you get the symbol for KITE.

If it is not windy, people can still attend to simply enjoy the appearance of everyone's kites and visit the booths. If the weather brings storms/rain, then the festival will be cancelled and rescheduled at a later time. For more information about the International Kite Festival please contact Airi Yamamoto at ayamamoto@ murraystate.edu, or by calling 270.809.4527.

P-ART-Y with the YAC

by Stephanie Felker

It’s More Fun Than It Sounds!

T

The 2018 Lower Town Arts & Music Festival

here’s a big red yak that makes its home on Broadway in Downtown Paducah. He’s become an icon for tourists and locals alike. He’s turning 10 years old, just like the Lower Town Arts & Music Festival (LTAMF). And, just like the festival, he loves everything art related! He’s the mascot of the Yeiser Art Center, colloquially known as “YAC,” hence the appropriate pun. Usually, he’s just sitting on the sidewalk, quietly welcoming everyone to come check out the art inside the historic Market House building where YAC is located. But for a very special weekend in May, for the first time, the YAC’s Yak will be in Lower Town. And, everyone is invited to come P-ART-Y WITH THE YAC, we guarantee it’s more fun than it sounds!

New Year, New Host

The Yeiser Art Center (YAC) is proud to become the permanent “host” of Paducah’s much loved LTAMF. The premier, two-day festival is a celebration of the creative spirit in all of us, with opportunities to see, experience, and enjoy art, music, food, children’s activities, as well as beer and wine from the surrounding region. This unique event - now in its 10th year - highlights the best and most extraordinary things that our particular region has to offer. It draws exclusively from the cultural resources in a 350 mile radius of Paducah, and boasts an annual attendance of nearly 17,000. The festival is touted as a Top Ten Spring Festivals by the Kentucky State Tourism Bureau. The event will take place May 18 & 19 in the historic Lower Town Neighborhood, near 7th Street and Madison Street. “This festival encapsulates the spirit of what the Yeiser is all about,” said YAC Director, Stacey Reason. “It’s about creating access to art, presenting different kinds of art, and celebrating the creative spirit in all of us! And to top it off, we couldn’t be more excited about the festival becoming a vital fundraiser for YAC programming. It’s a winwin!”

Here’s a list of who will be filling your ears with sweet melodies: Big Maracas, (Lexington), Captain Freddy & The Rivercats (Paducah), Collin Hancock (Bowling Green), Cruel Waves (Murray), Daniel Neihoff (Paducah), Leonard the Band (Paducah), Daniel Morrow (Paducah), The Darrell Scott Band (Nashville, TN), Darrin Hacquard (Lexington), Dawg Yawp (Cincinnati, OH), Fabled Canelands (Lexington), Fairseas (Paducah), The Howlin’ Brothers (Nashville, TN), Leight July (Paducah), Lew Jetton & 61 South (Paducah), Liz Cooper & The Stampede (Nashville), McBig Band (Paducah), Nora Jane Struthers (Nashville, TN), Okapi (Asheville, NC), Ona (Huntington, WV), Poly (Nashville, TN), PSO Youth & Children’s Choruses (Paducah), Quiet Hollers (Louisville), Rip Lee Pryor (Carbondale, IL), Samuel “Snacks” Hawkins (Paducah), The Savage Radley (Murray), Ted Borodofsky’s Southern Jazz (Paducah), Western Movies (Lexington), The Wheelhouse Rousters (Paducah), Wombo (Louisville), and Solid Rock’it Jug Band (Paducah).

Run Like a Mother! 8th Annual Iron Mom Half Marathon

M

other’s are notorious for always running - whether it’s running errands, running after the kids, or running in general, mothers are on the go. This strength is the backbone of the 8th Annual Paducah Iron Mom half marathon and half marathon relay which will take place on May 12. The race will begin at Water & Jefferson Streets in Paducah, at 7am. And, you don’t even have to be a mom to take part! Iron Mom started in 2011 and has steadily grown over the years. Last year there were 700 runners and organizers are hoping to have an even bigger turn out this year. The event raised $20,000 in its initial year and has progressively added about $5,000 each year to its fundraising efforts.

Help A Mother Out

If you would like to be a part of the event, please complete and submit the Iron Mom volunteer form. The success of this event is credited to the outstanding efforts of the volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help at the packet pick-up on Friday night as well as during the race on Saturday. Various volunteer duties include water stations, traffic coordination, cheering stations, etc. Coordinators guarantee volunteering at this event will inspire you. This race takes a true community effort to be successful - involving first responders, city government, sponsors, and tons of volunteers.

Proceeds from this event go to Family Service Society (FSS) - an organization that has been a resource to the people of Paducah and McCracken County since 1927. FSS provides services in times of need and during a crisis such as assistance for food, clothing, utilities, medications, dental care, eyeglasses, household goods, and personal hygiene items. They also have a Christmas food assistance program.

Another Mother Runner

The half marathon is on a loop course with both the start and finish in downtown Paducah. This year’s route is the same as years past and features Start/Finish on Jefferson, between Water & 2nd Streets. Runners will be right in front of the “Wall to Wall” murals at the Ohio River. The course offers an opportunity for participants and spectators to enjoy Paducah’s beautiful neighborhoods. It showcases Paducah by running along Jefferson Street, through the Greenway Trail, Bob Noble Park, and historic downtown and Lower Town. This event is sponsored by Mercy Health, Lourdes Hospital.

Walkers Welcome

Walkers are welcome but must be able to keep an 18-minute-mile pace to complete the half marathon. There is a four hour course limit. Roads will reopen and the course will not be supported past 11am. Walkers/Runners on the course must move to the sidewalks and obey all traffic signals.

Packet Pick Up

Runners can pick up their packets on Friday, May 11 from 10am-6pm at the Paducah Convention Center (lobby/foyer area) located at 1 Executive Blvd.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, including traffic control and assisting runners.

Not Running? Come & Watch!

The race is always better when there’s a crowd to cheer you on. Spectator groups are encouraged to be there and make the Iron Mom a fun event for the runners. Church youth groups, neighborhood associations, clubs, bands, sports teams, and dance squads are encouraged to form a spectator group and cheer on the runners. Remember that groups must officially register to be eligible for prizes. There is no fee for spectators. A $300 cash grand prize will be given for Best Overall Group at the awards ceremony after the race. For more information and to sign up to be a volunteer or spectator, visit paducahironmom.com or contact Amy Nolan at amy.nolan@ fsspaducah.com or 270.443.4838.

While You’re There...

Runners and spectators will get to experience some of Paducah’s culture near the Start/Finish at Paducah’s Farmers’ Market. Vendors will be selling many homegrown products, made right here in our region, including produce, baked goods, soap, and other artisan goods. Iron Mom will also have vendors set up on Jefferson Street facing the farmers’ market with race merchandise. You can also get a treat at the Paducah Bank Wow ice cream truck from a from a 5minute chair massage by Relaxation Station.

The 2018 Bargain Fair Goes

T

he Charity League, Inc., of Paducah is a vital, active and integral part of the Paducah community. This volunteer organization’s foremost purpose is to financially assist Easter Seals of Western Kentucky (ESWKY) and other charities. They do this while creating a legacy of friendship and community between members, and those who serve. Their mission is to positively impact the health, welfare, and general care of women, children, and others in need.

Every year, the ladies of the Charity League pour countless volunteer hours into creating a Spring event. Last year’s Paducah Bluegrass Bash was a tremendous success, and this year the league will be hosting a Bargain Fair. “We have three events,” Co-chair Maegan Mansfield told me. “Bargain Fair, Paducah Bluegrass Bash, and a golf scramble - each held as a spring event. Bargain Fair rotates every third year, while Paducah

Bluegrass Bash was a brand-new idea that sort of revamped the traditional Shine and Dine event. We also consider the golf scramble event, and members vote between a Shine and Dine/Paducah Bluegrass Bash style event, or the golf scramble, each year that Bargain Fair is not on deck.” “We really take pride in our spring events and have incorporated new approaches to ensure they stay fresh and unique for the attendees. Our goal is to make sure that this isn’t a repetitive event and that if you purchase a ticket, you are guaranteed a fun night out.”

A Yard Sale with a Twist

The Charity Leagues’ Bargain Fair has a long history: In 2012, Mary Hunter Hancock and the active members of the league revamped the historic Bargain Fair event by adding a boutique aspect and joining forces with local designers. The Bargain Fair Goes Fixer Upper event will take place on Saturday, April 28, from 7-11am at Paducah’s Julian Carroll Expo Center.

For 2018, the Bargain Fair co-chairs have decided to change the theme up a bit to reflect the huge interest in the “do-it-yourself” movement. This year’s Bargain Fair is going Fixer-Upper and is sponsored by sponsored by Higdon Furniture. The event will include a silent auction of refinished furniture and home décor. The artist’s piece included in the highest silent auction bid will receive a prize from Charlton & Park. The event will host a live furniture painting demonstration hosted by Broadway Interiors and there will be two, live give-a-ways from BBQ & More and The Grey Hare Interiors. All of this is in addition to the huge sale that will be going on simultaneously.

A Sneak Peek

If you would like to get a sneak peak of these items, you are in luck! On Friday, April 27, from 5:30-7:30pm at the same location, there is the Preview Party which will host the silent auction, furniture demonstration, and live give-a-ways. Ticket prices are a $15 donation which includes hors d’oeuvres and drinks. There are so many things to look forward to at Preview Night, and you will have the first chance to shop the bargain fair items. Since early fall, active Charity League members have been collecting new and gently used items to sell at the Bargain Fair Goes Fixer Upper. They have tons of furniture, home décor items, and seasonal décor have already been donated for the sale. Do you have items you don’t need and that could have a new home? Organizehomers are still accepting donations of furniture, rugs, linens, holiday décor, children’s toys, and home accent items. Autism Isn’t Black & White Gala

id you know that one in every 110 people suffer from autism – that’s almost four million Americans. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. People with ASD don’t look different and they don’t have any physical disabilities associated with the disorder. However, they often communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives. A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately, they are now all called autism spectrum disorder. The spectrum includes autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. That’s why our local autism community has created a non- profit, Families on the Spectrum. To help the community at large understand that autism isn’t black and white.“We really take pride in our spring events and have incorporated new approaches to ensure they stay fresh and unique for the attendees. Our goal is to make sure that this isn’t a repetitive event and that if you purchase a ticket, you are guaranteed a fun night out.”

does throughout the year. The gala will feature a fully catered meal by Neal’s Catering, a silent auction, music, dancing, and a cash bar. Majestic Sounds will be the deejay for the night, serenading guests through the festivities.

Masquerade!

An exciting part of the gala each year is choosing the theme. Guests are asked to dress in semi-formal attire and in the theme. Previous gala themes included the Great Gatsby and the Roaring 20s. The theme this year is “Unmasking Autism” and will be a masquerade ball. There will be the traditional photo booth modeled after the theme.

Autism Isn’t Black & White Gala

Families on the Spectrum is gearing up to host its fifth annual fundraiser, “Autism Isn’t Black and White Gala”. The Gala seeks to raise money in support of the work that Families on the Spectrum

To purchase tickets, please visit eventbrite.com/e/familieson-the-spectrum-autism-gala-2018-tickets-42048599493. Tickets are on available for $40 per an individual, or $75 for a couple. There are only 200 seats available and some of these seats will be reserved for corporate sponsors, so guests are encouraged to book now!

Families on the Spectrum

We’re fortunate to have a nonprofit organization in the area that help and supports families of those with a diagnosis of ASD. Families on the Spectrum is a nonprofit organization based in Paducah that seeks to bring awareness of autism to others, and to unite autism families together to form successfully communities and support systems. They serve a 50-mile radius around the Paducah area. The organization has quarterly meetings every year that serve as support groups for parents. It is crucial for families who have experienced an autism diagnosis in a loved one to know that other parents are going through. It’s also vital that they can share with others how they are feeling. In addition to the quarterly meetings, Families on the Spectrum hosts many events that are autism friendly. Children with autism are sometimes uncomfortable with large crowds and busy areas. This organization helps by holding small parties and outings in environments where the kids can have fun with their friends. “When a child is diagnosed with Autism, the entire family then has Autism,” Natalie Armstrong, Families on the Spectrum Board Chair, told me. “You all experience it in a different way. isolating. It can be very overwhelming trying to navigate the ‘what now?’ Families on the Spectrum is a safe place to land for these families. It’s just a place for parents to get together and talk about this life that only someone else living it can understand. It’s a place where our children will be better understood and accepted.” If you have a family member who has Autism or has been diagnosed with ASD, Families on the Spectrum would like to hear from you. Adopt a Duck Save a Life

T

he biggest and best (and ONLY) duck race in Paducah is gearing up for its third year. Yes, there’s nothing cuter than hundreds of bright yellow ducks racing to raise money for the Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center.

This year’s Paducky Derby is being held at 3pm, on April 21 on Noble Park Pond. Now these aren’t real ducks of course, they are “rubber duckies” - and they are a sight to see! So, what are you waiting for sponsor a racing duck, help a local non-profit, and win a money prize. Each duck adopted will go directly to saving, building and changing the lives of those affected by domestic violence. Last year’s event raised over $46,000 - almost $30,000 after expenses, and over 8,000 ducks were sold. Organizers are working hard to get 10K ducks adopted this year!

38

SPRING 2018

PAFM

iListWesternKentucky.com

The day of the event hundreds of people came to watch Paducah Power use three different trucks to dump the ducks into the pond at Noble Park. “The PaDucky Derby has become a favorite of our community,” said Mary Foley, Executive Director of the Merryman House. “It is such a great way to help support victims of domestic violence, while also bringing the community together around this fun event. This year, we hope to raise more than ever to support our ever-growing organization. We hope folks will consider adopting a single duck for 5 bucks or a flock for 50.00! There is a place for everyone.” All proceeds from the Paducky Derby will benefit the Merryman House, a non-profit organization which offers both residency and

outreach services to meet the needs of victims of intimate partner abuse and their dependents as they strive to live free of violence in their home. The Merryman House has become a comprehensive advocacy and support center that is devoted to addressing the comprehensive needs of survivors.

E-Quack

Everyone who adopts a duck, whether online, in the mail, at a Paducky Derby booth or in a sponsoring business, is entered into what they call E-Quack - a database that stores all of the information. Tag numbers are automatically and randomly assigned. Organizers want to make sure that no duck is taking steroids and the race is not fixed, so to ensure the integrity of the race, tag numbers are never given out. Rest assured, however, that all of the ducks you have adopted will be in the water. If all the ducks have not been adopted by Derby Day, it means that a lucky adopter can still adopt up to an hour prior to the Derby. Their names will be placed at random into the mix, next to a number that does not already have a name by it. Anyone can adopt until an hour before the race begins, as long as the Derby is not sold out.

Pick Up a Quack Pack!

Ducks are now officially available for adoption online. There is also a Quack Pack of six ducks for $25 or Flock of Ducks for $50 that includes 12 ducks. Ducks can be purchased at the Paducky Derby Facebook Page, as well as the Paducky Derby website at duckrace. com/paducah, or at upcoming duck adoption venues.

Ducks will be sold at Kentucky Oaks Mall from 10am–6pm on March 24 and April 7. They will also be selling ducks at the Expo Center during Quilt Week on April 18-20. The grand prize is $1000 and $500 for second. This year is the first year for a team prize. If you are one of the winners, the Merryman House will contact you using the information you provided with your duck adoption. You do not need to be present to win, but, seriously, why would you want to miss this? The Paducky Derby is open to the public. For more information, please contact the Merryman House by emailing janet@merrymanhouse.org or calling 270.443.6001.

Ducks Helping Victims of Abuse All proceeds from the Paducah Derby benefit The Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which offers both residency and outreach services to meet the needs of victims of intimate partner abuse and their dependents as they strive to live free of violence in their home. Giving Back to the Community Kick-a-thon & Carnival

F

or the third year in a row, local dojo, Premier Martial Arts (PMA), is hosting a unique fundraising event in Paducah - the PMA Kick-a-thon. This year, for the first time the event is open to other dojo’s and the public. YOU are invited to be a part of it! Get kicking on Saturday, May 5, from 11am–3pm at PMA which is located at 451 Jordan Drive near Kentucky Oaks Mall.

What Is the Kick-a-Thon? The Kick-a-thon is an event in which students and parents reach out to the community to gather donations for local charities. In turn for donations, Premier will gather all their students in a display of dedication to the community and demonstrate their martial arts

discipline. The highlight of the event is when all the students line up to karate kick, as fast and hard as they can, for a specified number of minutes. More than 200 children are expected to participate this year. It is one of the dojo’s tenets that our students and families become part of the community,” explained Christy Brown, who is not only the event organizer, but the parent of a dojo student. “We want to instill in the students an understanding of what it means to be part of a community. This event will give them the opportunity to give back to those who are in need.” Last year Premier raised $12,000 and have set an ambitious $20,000 for this year.

A Whole Lot of Fun Aside from the Kick-a-thon itself; the event will feature games, free face-painting, free balloon animals, inflatables, and demonstrations by PMA staff and students. You can purchase a ticket for different events and games for $1 each, or purchase an all-access armband for $10. There will also be a silent auction with items generously donated from the community. Local businesses such as The Craft Bar will host activities for the kids, and the McCracken County Library will also be there with crafts, and to promote their summer reading programs. Science educator, Jason Lindsey from Hooked on Science will hold a science demonstration. Both Chick-Fil-A and Coldstone Creamery will be there offering lunch

items for purchase. Chick-Fil-A is donating back 20% of their proceeds back to the event. Parents and adults are encouraged to bring chairs to relax while the kids play. PMA is still seeking donations of items or services which they can add to the silent auction.

Kicking for a Cause Premier is kicking for three local organizations who need community support. The first is the Boys and Girl Club of Paducah, which has been a corner stone in many communities, giving young children a place to learn, participate, and meet strong role models.

The second is the Community Kitchen in Paducah, a free open kitchen in which they are able to feed the hungry and provide a warming center during the cold months. The third is Hope Unlimited, a family care center that specializes in helping young families prepare for the blessing of parenthood by offering a wide range of family oriented assistance to future mothers. If you have any questions regarding the event or ways to donate please contact Christy Brown at 312.953.4060 or Christianne_Brown@ yahoo.com #ilovepaducah
