Aida Cuevas, “The Queen of Ranchera,” has created one of the most important careers in traditional Mexican music. She is beloved at home and abroad for her stunning vocals and unswerving devotion to traditional music. Ranchera stems from the Mexican revolution and the genre is overflowing with drama and patriotism. Cuevas has made a career of challenging this historically male-dominated genre with her operatic range, a voice strong enough to overcome a dozen amplified instruments, and performances that overflow with passion. In 2018, Cuevas became the first female singer in the mariachi genre to win a Grammy when she was honored for “Best Regional Mexican Music Album” for Arrieros Somos. With 39 album releases to her credit, other accolades include a Latin Grammy Award and seven Latin Grammy nominations in the “Best Ranchera/ Mariachi Album” category.

With sharp social commentary and dynamic vocals, Chavez and her band take audiences on a journey through the Americas, expertly blending sounds with tension and grace. “Most striking is Chavez’s ease as she moves between social and love songs, between North American and Latin genres, and even between languages. When she passes mid-song from English to Spanish and back, it’s the most natural thing in the world.“ –The Boston Globe

Jaime Laredo, conducting The Emily and Eugene Grant Opening Series
Rachael Worby, conducting Special Guests: Time for Three
The Westchester Philharmonic opens its series at The PAC with the pure, sublime beauty of Ravel’s Pavane, originally composed for piano and dedicated to Princesse de Polignac. “Drumroll,” one of Haydn’s final three symphonies, shows the composer at the very peak of his already formidable powers; a mysterious timpani roll gives it its name. The triumph of Brahms’ First Symphony is belied by the 22 years (by some counts) that he took to compose it, so enthralled was he in the shadow of Beethoven…a shadow he quickly erased with this towering work.
Exuberant maestra and Rockland native Rachael Worby has been Music Director of the Pasadena Pops, Wheeling Symphony, Carnegie Hall’s Young People’s Concerts, guest-conducts around the world with legendary soprano Jessye Norman, and leads her own LA-based ensemble, Muse/ique.

Of Pamela Frank, the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote: “She has a big, rich sound that vibrates, phrasing breathes with great purpose. The Circa Carnival comes to town with whimsical tales of creatures of land and sea, who tumble, fly, leap, and spin their way through the many wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom. Our zebras juggle and flip… Our kangaroos skip and somersault… We’ve elephants with street-cred and rhythm… And even our dinosaur bones shake, clatter and roll to the music.
Carnival of the Animals whisks you away on a thrilling circus escapade inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns’ delightful salute to feathers, fur, and fins. Circa’s acrobats bring this classical music suite to life for a whole new generation of circus, music, and animal lovers. Circa Contemporary Circus is one of the world’s leading performance companies. Under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Circa’s ensemble of exceptional circus artists is pioneering how extreme physicality can create powerful and moving performances.
Created by Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa Ensemble. A production by Circa and QPAC’s Out of the Box Festival.

Daniel Kelly
Rakonto: Student Voices Composer/pianist Daniel Kelly transforms the stories of everyday people into dramatic and compelling music that has delighted audiences around the country. This unique performance has been specially created right here in Westchester for family audiences. Audiences will hear the dreams, hopes and struggles of local students in recorded interviews that are seamlessly blended with original compositions performed by Kelly’s band of world-class musicians. “The goal of this concert is that by hearing someone’s life story and point of view, we may all be more understanding with one another. The Triplets of Belleville Extraordinary!... A bracing blend of silliness and sophistication! It’s comic, touching, and a visual knockout. –Rolling Stone
Saturday, April 20 @8pm 42
The Triplets of Belleville courtesy of David Lieberman Artists’ Representatives
The unclassifiable, richly imagined The Triplets of Belleville — a fantastical caper involving the Tour de France, the French Mafia, a kidnapping, and a wily grandmother and her faithful dog — becomes a wild spectacle featuring dancing, singing, foley sound effects, and the original hot swing score performed live by its composer, Benoît Charest, and his eight-piece Orchestre Terrible de Belleville band. The film was nominated for two Oscars (Best Animated Feature, Best Song) in 2003 and remains among the most bizarre and enchanting animated films ever made. Along with the Oscar nod, the score won the Montréal-born, Berkleetrained Charest a César Award for Best Music Written for a Film, a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Music, and a Grammy nomination.
Recommended for ages 10 and older.

Directed by Johanna McKeon
A Chicago public high school slated for closure at the end of the year is the battleground in this taut play about the future of public education. Surprisingly, it’s a comedy. Ike Holter, winner of the 2017 Windham-Campbell Prize and a fierce new voice in American playwriting, introduces us to a small group of teachers who launch a heroic battle to save their school. They put their

King Henry V has died. As the English battle the armies of the brilliant and fanatical Joan of Arc, the underage King Henry VI’s courtiers are busy fighting each other instead of the French, thus beginning the Wars of the Roses. Fast moving and packed with action, this early history play (a source for Game of Thrones) gives us a world burning unawares.
Anne Washburn’s outrageous, enthusiastically acclaimed dark comedy propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future. A meta-tribute to the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.
