Dorrance Dance
Sunday, November 10, 2019, 3pm • PepsiCo Theatre “…pushes the boundaries of tap while exposing its true nature: that it is music” —The New York Times This electrifying company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap.” Founded by Michelle Dorrance, 2015 MacArthur Fellow and 2018 Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, the company has, in less than a decade, forged a brand that honors tap dance’s uniquely American history in a new, dynamic, and compelling context—blending traditional technique with cutting-edge choreography and inventive rhythms. The astounding skill and exuberance of this show-stopping group thrills audiences and challenges expectations every time they take the stage.
Fascinated by the raw dynamic of hip-hop and breakdancing and the purity of classical formalism, choreographer and RUBBERBANDance Artistic Director Victor Quijada has been demolishing barriers between these contrasting dance styles for more than 15 years. His signature technique blends urban and contemporary dance, with a focus on interpretation, decision-taking, the use of rhythmic variations, and complex, physically demanding choreography.

Friday, December 13, 2019, 8pm • PepsiCo Theatre Be among the first to experience An Untitled Love from award-winning choreographer and Purchase grad Kyle Abraham. This evening-length dance work is sonically rooted in R&B/Soul Music, comprised of the catalogue of Grammy Award-winning R&B legend D’Angelo. It is a creative exaltation, centered on the often overlooked love and unity that exists within the black community, danced by the company along with Kyle Abraham himself. A Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award winner, Doris Duke Artist Award winner, and MacArthur Fellow, Abraham is one of today’s most in-demand choreographers, and the first black choreographer commissioned to create a work for the New York City Ballet in over a decade. Abraham was born into the hip-hop culture of the late 1970s and incorporates an artistic upbringing of classical cello, piano, and the visual arts into his work with A.I.M. Through a sensual and provocative vocabulary, A.I.M strives to create an avenue for personal investigation, exposed on stage.

(T)HERE Festival: Chouk Bwa
Saturday, November 16, 2019, 8pm • PepsiCo Theatre From the countryside of the New World’s first free black republic, Chouk Bwa performs stripped-down Haitian roots music: enthralling percussion, dance, call-and-response singing, work songs, Vodou performances, and Holy Week rara music. Infused with the scent and sensibility of voodoo, it is music that refuses to obscure their homeland’s deep African heritage. These are rhythms that were “torn from Africa and secretly replanted in a new land.” But this “replanting” sowed a new identity. As such, the music of Chouk Bwa is a proud statement of Haitian culture, of a nation that has known the hardest of times but whose spirit remains as tough as those ancient drums. This event is part of Purchase College's (T)HERE Festival, celebrating the art and culture of Haiti.

With dynamic vocals and sharp social commentary, she'll take you on a journey through the Americas, expertly blending sounds with tension and grace. Chavez is currently touring her new album Lightbeam, a collection of songs about the journey and hardships she and her wife have undergone to be able to express their love for each other publicly as Catholic, Latinx women.
An Evening with David Sedaris
Saturday, December 7, 2019, 8pm • Concert Hall
The master of satire and best-selling author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and other satirical gems returns with the acerbic humor, social commentary, and outlandish stories that transfixed the audience at his last (nearly sold-out) show at The Purchase PAC. Sedaris is one of today’s most observant writers addressing the human condition, which he details hilariously in his latest book, Calypso, described as beach reading for people who detest beaches and required reading for those who loathe small talk. Fans will love to hear these stories live as the Grammy nominee and New York Times best-selling author brings heart and hilarity to the stage.

The townspeople agree that Rink’s family are quite strange, but they are unaware of Rink’s spectacular gifts. Whenever the moon is full, Rink sprouts beautiful flowers all over his body. In a single decade, with works such as The Firebird and The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky showed possibilities for musical extremism never before imagined. With bracing harmonies, infectious rhythms, and brilliant orchestration, everything that Stravinsky created in this fertile period stole the musical show of the era, and this trio arrangement of The Soldier’s Tale (Stravinsky’s own) introduced his wildly controversial music to the chamber music stage. Innovations abound in this program: Beethoven’s Clarinet Trio (the first of its kind), Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words (his own invention), and Smetana’s Piano Trio, the first major chamber work from the Bohemian region. BEETHOVEN Trio in B-flat major for Clarinet, Cello, Piano, Op. 11 STRAVINSKY L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale), Trio Version for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano MENDELSSOHN Selected Songs Without Words for Piano SMETANA Trio in G minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 15
French Enchantment
Saturday, January 25, 2020, 5pm • Recital Hall Wu Han, Piano / Paul Huang, Violin / Matthew Lipman, Viola / Clive Greensmith, Cello Experience the grace, wit, and charm of French music. The program begins and ends with early works by Saint-Saëns and Fauré that recreate the elegant atmosphere of 19-century Parisian salons. In between, the Ravel sonata, written soon after World War I, uses just two string instruments to produce a composition of unique, austere beauty. These three inimitable works capture the essence of pure melody in its most delightfully fundamental form. A feast for the eyes and ears, Bartók’s ingenious Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion stands alone in the chamber music literature, an astonishing synthesis of percussion and keyboard. Also featured on the program are two more milestones: Dohnányi’s delectable Serenade, the 20th century’s first string trio, and Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet ne plus ultra, “Souvenir de Florence.” DOHNÁNYI Serenade in C major for Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 10 BARTÓK Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion TCHAIKOVSKY Sextet for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Two Cellos, Op. 70, “Souvenir de Florence”

Combining the rigor of Bach with the powerful energy and extreme irony of Soviet era music, the work is a milestone not only of chamber music but also of Shostakovich’s career: it won him the coveted Stalin Prize. This essential quintet is accompanied by a youthful Beethoven sonata and Mendelssohn’s appropriately tempestuous First Piano Trio. BEETHOVEN Sonata in D major for Violin and Piano, Op. 12, No. 1 SHOSTAKOVICH Quintet in G minor for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 57 MENDELSSOHN Trio No. 1 in D minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 49
