KYLE ABRAHAM / ABRAHAM.IN.MOTION Dearest Home | Performed in the round, in our Black Box Theatre
Friday, October 20 & Saturday, October 21, 2017, 8pm Purchase alum Kyle Abraham’s company Abraham.In.Motion strives to create an avenue for personal investigation through an evocative, interdisciplinary body of work. Born into hip-hop culture in the late 1970s and grounded in Abraham’s artistic upbringing in classical cello, piano, and the visual arts, his work entwines a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on sound, human behavior, and all things visual.
Dearest Home is an interactive dance work focused on Loving and Longing, Love and Loss. Comprised of solos and duets generated in conversation and collaboration with a variety of age groups and self-identified subcultures, Home interweaves movement, in its most vulnerable state, with cross-cultural conversation and community action.
SUZANNE FARRELL BALLET FAREWELL TOUR Sunday, December 3, 2017, 3pm | Concert Hall Join us on this very special afternoon as we say good-bye to the Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Under the Artistic Direction of George Balanchine's most celebrated muse, the company has flourished for over 20 years. Combining her vast artistic strengths and teaching gifts with her deep, inimitable insight into the Balanchine canon, Ms. Farrell has triumphantly carried forth "Mr. B's" enduring legacy. Praised by New York Times Chief Dance Critic Alastair Macaulay for "tackling arduous roles…with degrees of energy, scale, detailed nuance, and musical sophistication seldom found anywhere," the company's repertoire consists of more than 65 works choreographed by George Balanchine, Maurice Béjart, and Jerome Robbins.Don’t miss the opportunity to see them dance one final time.
L.A. DANCE PROJECT Friday, March 2 & Saturday, March 3, 2018, 8pm | PepsiCo Theatre L.A. Dance Project, founded in 2012 by choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied along with composer Nico Muhly, art consultant Matthieu Humery, founding producer Charles Fabius, and composer Nicholas Britell, has made its mark on the dance world with a contemporary approach to art and movement that the Los Angeles Times describes as “a defining artistic vision for our time.” Their original works endeavor to be multidisciplinary collaborations with both emerging and established visual artists, musicians, designers, film directors, and composers, contributing to intriguing new platforms for dance. This season, The PAC will serve as LADP's technical residency home, in partnership with Joyce Theatre Productions.

FLUTE AFFAIR Saturday, November 18, 2017, 5pm | Recital Hall An instrument that’s been around for 60,000 years certainly deserves a concert of its own. This program’s exposé of the flute’s astonishing capabilities reveals how composers of three centuries were inspired by its magical qualities. Tara Helen O’Connor, flute Ransom Wilson, flute Juho Pohjonen, piano Kristin Lee, violin Paul Neubauer, viola Timothy Eddy, cello Anthony Manzo, double bass James Austin Smith, oboe Eric Reed, horn MOZART Quartet in C Major for Flute, Violin, Viola, and Cello, K. 285b BEETHOVEN Serenade in D Major for Flute, Violin, and Viola, Op. 25 DUTILLEUX Sonatine for Flute and Piano HUMMEL Septet in D Minor for Flute, Oboe, Horn, Viola, Cello, Bass, & Piano, Op. 74
Great Perfor
Choreographer and dancer Victor Quijada founded RUBBERBANDance Group (RBDG) as a vehicle to manifest his unique choreographic identity through the creation of powerful and innovative dance works. The company, also led by dancer and artistic co-director Anne Plamondon, reconciles the spontaneity, fearlessness, and risk-taking of hip-hop culture with the refinement and choreographic maturity of the ballet. Beating with the fresh pulse of street attitude and an acute understanding of theatrical staging, Quijada's choreographies explore human relationships by harnessing the ardor of obsession, the shock of violence, and the delicate nature of tenderness, comedy, and tragedy with a great deal of honesty and courage.
JESSICA LANG DANCE Saturday, May 5, 2018, 8pm | Concert Hall Former Twyla Tharp dancer and choreographer Jessica Lang and her company aim to make their performances full sensory experiences into which onlookers, whether they be balletomanes or dance novices, can completely submerge themselves. Her work blends the fluidity and grounded quality of contemporary dance and the beautiful lines of traditional ballet to great modern effect. On this very special evening, Lang, whose choreography is "reliably sophisticated and achingly beautiful" (Chicago Tribune), will present the world premiere of a brand new work, developed on campus and set to music by Tony Bennett, to mark the occasion of Bennett’s birthday, as well as The PAC’s own 40th anniversary. SAVE THE DATE! The PAC Gala will take place on this very same night, beginning with cocktails and dinner before the performance, and desserts and drinks after. Details to come! For more information contact Katherine King, our Associate Director of Development, at Katherine.King@purchase.edu or (914) 251-6178.

BRAHMS & DVOR ˘ÁK Saturday, January 27, 2018, 5pm | Recital Hall The musical and personal friendship between Brahms and Dvor˘ák is the stuff of legend. This pairing brings to life the creative energy that reverberated between the German neo-classicist and the champion of Czech folk music, producing a glowing array of classical music’s most essential works. Michael Brown, piano Wu Han, piano Chad Hoopes, violin Paul Huang, violin Matthew Lipman, viola Dmitri Atapine, cello ˘ÁK Selected Slavonic Dances for Piano, Four Hands DVOR BRAHMS Trio in C Minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 101 BRAHMS Selected Hungarian Dances for Piano, Four Hands ˘ÁK Quintet in A Major for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, & Cello, B. 155, Op. 81 DVOR
VIENNA TO HOLLYWOOD Saturday, February 24, 2018, 5pm | Recital Hall Vienna has likely produced more great music than any other city in the world. As our program’s anchor Viennese composer, we’ve chosen Schubert, the only one of the Viennese giants actually born in the storied city. His pair of fantasies, composed in the last year of his life, are a stunning tribute to his everlasting genius. And, likewise, Hollywood’s movie industry has generated a level of creative composing to rival any European capital, and perhaps the most famous of all was Erich Wolfgang Korngold (think: The Adventures of Robin Hood) who wrote this stirring, hyper-romantic piano quartet for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Juho Pohjonen, piano Wu Qian, piano Sean Lee, violin Danbi Um, violin Mihai Marica, cello SCHUBERT Fantasie in F Minor for Piano, Four Hands, D. 940, Op. 103 SCHUBERT Fantasie in C Major for Violin and Piano, D. 934, Op. 159 KORNGOLD Suite for Piano Left Hand, Two Violins, and Cello, Op. 23
CLASSICAL EVOLUTION Saturday, April 21, 2018, 5pm | Recital Hall This program of favorites reveals the multi-dimensional ingenuity of the Classical style. Its intelligent principles of symmetry and logic have enabled composers through the ages to craft aesthetically pleasing works that endure the test of time. Mozart’s pristine Trio, Weber’s electrifying Clarinet Quintet, and Brahms’s magisterial Piano Quintet all owe a nod of thanks to Haydn’s immortal invention. Gilles Vonsattel, piano Ida Kavafian, violin Erin Keefe, violin Yura Lee, viola Nicholas Canellakis, cello Tommaso Lonquich, clarinet MOZART Trio in E-flat Major for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano, K. 498 (“Kegelstatt”) WEBER Quintet in B-flat Major for Clarinet, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 34 BRAHMS Quintet in F Minor for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 34
mers THE BRENTANO QUARTET Saturday, December 9, 2017, 8pm | Recital Hall Mark Steinberg, violin Serena Canin, violin Misha Amory, viola Nina Lee, cello Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. “Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding,” raves the London Independent.

Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of eight, Ms. Chang has continued to impress audiences with her technical virtuosity and refined emotional depth.
JEREMY DENK Sunday, April 15, 2018, 3pm | Concert Hall Jeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists — an artist The New York Times hails as someone “you want to hear no matter what he performs.” Winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, the Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year award, Denk was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016.
Orchestras ORPHEUS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Cicely Parnas, cello Sunday, October 8, 2017, 3pm | Recital Hall PAC audience favorite Orpheus Chamber Orchestra creates extraordinary musical experiences, performing music at the highest level, challenging artistic boundaries, and inspiring the public. Joining Orpheus for a program of beloved works from their repertoire will be American cellist Cicely Parnas, recognized for bringing “velvety sound, articulate passagework and keen imagination” to her performances (The New York Times). ARENSKY Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky, Op. 35a SCHUBERT “Arpeggione” Sonata in A Minor, for cello and string orchestra (arr. D. Tabakova) TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings, Op. 48
MOSCOW STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Pavel Kogan, Music Director & Chief Conductor Narek Hakhnazaryan, cello Saturday, November 11, 2017, 8pm | Concert Hall Renowned around the globe, the MSSO was founded in 1943 and is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in Russia. The orchestra is known for its enviable reputation for high standards of artistic excellence, imaginative programming, and community engagement, and having a broad and loyal constituency around the world. WAGNER Tristan and Isolde Overture SCHUMANN Cello Concerto SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2
AMERICAN RHAPSODY: THE GERSHWIN SONGBOOK Sunday, February 25, 2018, 3pm | Concert Hall Nearly a century after the songs were composed, George Gershwin’s music remains as fresh and irresistible as it was during the Jazz Age. His poetic melodies and eclectic oeuvre of everything including Broadway, Hollywood, opera, and classic American standards have left a legacy audiences love to hear again and again. The Gershwin Big Band, a collection of world-class jazz musicians led by Michael Andrew, whom The New York Post called “the next Harry Connick, Jr…a natural bandleader,” brings George Gershwin’s music to life in this brand new program of iconic American music.
ORPHEUS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA: THE COURAGE TO CREATE Lisa Batiashvili, violin Friday, March 23, 2018, 8pm | Concert Hall Schubert and Prokofiev always followed their hearts and their ears, even when the world misunderstood them. Schubert never had a symphony performed publicly in his lifetime, but he conjured masterful sounds in the “Unfinished” Symphony that he abandoned midway, inexplicably. Music from Rosamunde — one of his many failed attempts to break into the theatre world — matches the intensity of the “Unfinished” Symphony, and may have actually begun as its finale. Prokofiev endured his own rejections during his years of exile in Europe, especially once he turned toward a self-described “new simplicity.” The Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili brings her insightful perspective to Prokofiev’s elegant Second Violin Concerto, a work steeped in the crosscurrents between Russia and the West. SCHUBERT Entr’acte No.1 In B Minor from Rosamunde PROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 63 PROKOFIEV/CHIHARA Schubert Waltzes Suite SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D.759 (“Unfinished”)

THE PHIL’S FRIENDS & FAMILY CONCERT Sunday, February 11, 2018, 3 pm | Concert Hall
Ted Sperling, conducting Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin Ms. Hall-Tompkins was recently the envy of every violinist in New York, as the remarkable — yet unseen — soloist for the acclaimed Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof (under the musical direction of Ted Sperling). Indeed, this Naumburg Competition winner and Concert Artists Guild Grant recipient is the most in-demand violinist on Broadway, yet her classical bona fides are even more impressive. John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie not only ushered in the era of Be-Bop in the American jazz tradition, he left a legacy of musical excellence that embraced and fused all musical forms, particularly those with roots deep in Africa such as the music of Cuba, other Latin American countries, and the Caribbean. His goodwill and good humor infused jazz musicians and fans throughout the world with the genuine sense of jazz’s ability to transcend national and ethnic boundaries, and, for this reason, Gillespie was and is an international treasure.

SITI COMPANY: HANJO (WORLD PREMIERE) Friday, October 6, 2017, 8pm | PepsiCo Theatre
In SITI Company's latest work, Hanjo, a young woman’s endless waiting for her lover transports her into a state of insanity.
Hanjo is one of five Modern Noh Plays, radical adaptations of the seminal Noh classics by the infamous novelist Yukio Mishima. It is brief and has three characters; in this production, the entire play will be performed three times. The cast will rotate so that we see each actor play each of the three roles, allowing the audience to experience the play as a Noh connoisseur would, appreciating each actor as a performer of a form, and not just as an inhabitant of a character — an experience perhaps similar to watching an opera singer perform an iconic role. Directed by Co-Artistic Director Leon Ingulsrud Featuring Akiko Aizawa*, G.M. Gianino, Stephen Webber With Musician and Composer Christian Fredrickson.
*Akiko Aizawa will perform in Japanese Founded in 1992 by Anne Bogart and Tadashi Suzuki to redefine and revitalize contemporary theatre in the United States, NYC-based SITI Company is a collective of theatre artists, dedicated to creating and presenting work that is constantly evolving as it moves through time and responds to a changing world.
PURCHASE REPERTORY THEATRE: THE CRUCIBLE Friday, October 20 - Saturday, October 28, 2017 | PepsiCo Theatre Arthur Miller's The Crucible, one of his most famous plays, is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the1690's. Miller wrote the play during the years of McCarthyism, as a reflection of the mass cultural and political hysteria produced when the U.S. government sought to suppress Communism and radical leftist activity in America.
PIG IRON THEATRE COMPANY: POET IN NEW YORK Friday, March 16, 2018, 8pm | PepsiCo Theatre “Hypnotic, graceful… surreally lyrical.” – The Washington Post This critically acclaimed one-man show is a biographical fantasia about Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain’s greatest modern poet and playwright. In June 1929, Lorca sailed for New York. His nine months here changed his vision of poetry, the theatre, and the social role of the artist; he came to study English but devoted himself instead to writing Poet in New York , a howl of protest against racial bigotry, mindless consumption, and the adoration of technology. Founded in 1995 as an interdisciplinary ensemble, the mission of Pig Iron Theatre Company is to expand what is possible in performance by creating rigorous and unusual ensemble-devised works; by training the next generation of daring, innovative theatre artists; and by consistently asking the hardest questions, both in their art and in its relation to the world around us.

Classy and enormous fun, the infectious indie-mambo band Orkesta Mendoza updates the Latin big band tradition, merging a multitude of Latin styles such as cumbia, merengue, and ranchera with electronica, strings, and unexpected bursts of western pop. Las Cafeteras recreate traditional Afro-Caribbean Son Jarocho music in a wildly vibrant style, with traditional instruments such as the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone), and tarima (a wooden platform); they mix Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes to deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of East L.A.
