Step into the future
We’re forty, and we are stepping into the future. The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College has been at the forefront of the performing arts scene in Westchester County for four decades, and we have no intention of slowing down. Last season we introduced a new artistic vision, one that would transform The PAC into a true incubator for the performing arts. This season we continue that vision, commissioning innovative new work, hosting residency activities, creating opportunities for community connection, and nurturing the artists of the future. Our spring season features many of these cutting-edge artists. Some of them are long-established, some are just getting started. What they share is a drive to explore, to challenge established norms, and to push their art forms into the future. We invite you to join them, and us, on this journey forward, exploring the arts on the cutting edge. You won’t be disappointed.

Kronos Quartet

San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet has re-imagined the string quartet experience. Known for its spirit of fearless exploration, dedication to experimentation, and championing of new and under-heard music, Kronos has collaborated with many of the world’s most eclectic composers and performers, and commissioned more than 900 works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos is David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello). Tickets $62.50 / $52.50 / $42.50

The New Golden Age of Latin Music

Music knows no boundaries. The Mexican-American communities of Arizona and California are hotbeds of creativity, merging styles that reflect changing borders and shared cultural identities. Classy and enormous fun, the infectious indie-mambo band Orkesta Mendoza update the Latin big band tradition, merging styles like cumbia, merengue, and ranchera with electronica, strings, and unexpected bursts of Western pop.
Two of today’s hottest bands, taking the fabled Latin sound in inspiring new directions.
Las Cafeteras recreate traditional Afro-Caribbean Son Jarocho music in a wildly vibrant style; they mix Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes to deliver inspiring lyrics about a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of East L.A. We make music. New music. Old music. We’ll play it, as long as we love it. wild Up is a modern music collective; an adventurous chamber orchestra; a group of Los Angeles-based musicians committed to creating visceral, thought-provoking happenings. With future folk, wild Up creates a communal concert of sound/noise/experience that celebrates old-world ways of living in the modern era. Together we will explore the music from Ancient India, modern California, post-war New York, and from American composers that envision a future form of music rooted in folk ethos. Gypsy Swing / European redneck music? Why not! Velvet Caravan mix Gypsy, Honky-Tonk, Swing, and Latin, playing with thunderous virtuosity and a relentless sense of humor. This Savannah-based, unorthodox, high-energy, acoustic-based quintet of guitar, violin, standup bass, percussion, and keyboards (including accordion) will make you want to get up and dance — and you’ll be able to, as this event will feature nightclub seating — think Joe’s Pub — with dinner, drinks available at the bar, and, yes, a dance floor! “A defining artistic vision for our time.” Los Angeles Times Fans of dance, and film, and films about dance will know Benjamin Millepied as the star of Black Swan. The dancer and choreographer is also the founder of the L.A. Dance Project. Along with co-founders composer Nico Muhly, art consultant Matthieu Humery, founding producer Charles Fabius, and composer Nicholas Britell, Millepied has built a company that has made its mark on the dance world with a contemporary approach to movement and art. LADP’s original works are multi-disciplinary collaborations with emerging and established artists, contributing to intriguing new platforms for dance.

Choreographer Victor Quijada founded RUBBERBANDance Group as a vehicle to manifest his unique choreographic identity; the company reconciles the spontaneity, fearlessness, and risk-taking of hip-hop culture with the refinement and choreographic maturity of the ballet. Beating with the fresh pulse of street attitude and an acute understanding of theatrical staging, Quijada’s choreographies explore human relationships by harnessing the ardor of obsession, the shock of violence, and the delicate nature of tenderness, comedy, and tragedy with a great deal of honesty and courage. On the program, Vic’s Mix. Sometimes humorous, at times emotional, Vic’s Mix spans the immense creative territory of Victor Quijada, extracting a number of jewels from the choreographer’s repertoire. “In Lang’s choreography, less is more, and movement evolves naturally out of relationships.” Boston Globe Former Twyla Tharp dancer and choreographer Jessica Lang and her company aim to make their performances full sensory experiences into which onlookers, whether they be balletomanes or dance novices, can completely submerge themselves. Her work blends the fluidity and grounded quality of contemporary dance and the beautiful lines of traditional ballet to great modern effect. On this very special evening, Lang will present the world premiere of a brand new work, developed here on campus and set to the music of Tony Bennett, as we celebrate The PAC’s own 40th anniversary.
