Dear Arts Lover, We usually refer to the booklet you’re holding in your hands as our season brochure. I prefer to think of it as a catalog. A catalog of great art and entertainment. As a child I would await the arrival of the holiday catalogs like the “Sears Wish Book,” chock full of the latest toys, with great anticipation. The Performing Arts Center’s Wish Book offers options that are no less fun or intriguing: the second appearance of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, household names like Branford Marsalis, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Midori, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Patti LuPone. You’ll also find some who may be new discoveries: RIOULT Dance NY, the sizzling choreography of Compagnie Käfig, one-of-akind organist Cameron Carpenter, and the ripped-fromthe-headlines performance piece Basetrack. We also have an exciting new partnership with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, our country’s leading repertory company for chamber music, with recitals featuring works by Faure, Mozart, and Vivaldi (The Four Seasons). Please take a few moments with this Wish Book. Turn down the corners of pages featuring the artists and performances you wish to see, mark the dates on your calendar. And then get your tickets! Saturday • September 27 • 8pm “Branford Marsalis and his group engaged a strategy of virtuosity and cockiness, clarity and clout” – San Jose Mercury News
Kicking off our season, one of the greats. Having gained initial acclaim through his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and his own brother Wynton’s quintet, saxophonist Branford Marsalis has long been considered a star in his own right − a NEA Jazz Master, Grammy Award winner, and Tony Award nominee. One of the most revered instrumentalists of our time, his music pays homage to the jazz giants with whom he’s worked, a veritable “who’s who” including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins. “ Chéri offers an irresistible chance to encounter beloved performers in a new context and to view their artistry with a new intimacy” – The New York Times
The reviews were ecstatic when this tragic tale of forbidden love in 1920s Paris premiered at New York City’s Signature Theatre this winter. “Entrancingly luminous and gorgeous dance,” proclaimed The New York Times. “A voluptuous dream,” wrote the Star Ledger critic. “A whirl of sensuality and grace,” cheered the Daily News. Martha Clarke’s fusion of theater, live music, and dance features Academy and Golden Globe Award nominee and Obie Award winner Amy Irving, pianist Sarah Rothenberg, American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Herman Cornejo, and prima ballerina assoluta Alessandra Ferri. Dramatic text is by playwright Tina Howe, the Tony Award-winning writer of Painting Churches and Coastal Disturbances.

“Ridiculously enjoyable… a master of the barely relevant aside”
– The New York Times
Perhaps you’ve heard him on Public Radio International’s “This American Life” where he’s been one of Ira Glass’s most popular contributors for the past several years. Or you’ve seen him on one of his many appearances on Letterman, Kimmel, Conan, and Fallon. The award-winning comedian, author, and filmmaker returns to the stage with more painfully awkward stories in a show about jokes and how they can get you into trouble. Join Birbiglia as he visits Cats-a-chusetts, argues with a stranger about her nut allergy, hosts an awards show for angry celebrities, and learns that Fozzie Bear is a tough act to follow. “Black Violin works hard, but makes it all look like play. Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orchestral soloists; at others they fiddle as if at a hoedown” – The New York Times
Will B and Kev Marcus speak for themselves about their brilliant performances on violin and viola: “It’s something everyone can enjoy, whether you’re an 80-year-old grandmother or a kid in kindergarten. It’s classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, pop…just good music.” These guys first started playing together in high school, received the best classical training, and now travel the country strutting stages like the huge stars they plan to be, introducing new generations to “just good music” along the way.

“That voice, an almost chilling blend of whisper and bite, has lost none of its allure” – Sydney Morning Herald New York’s Greenwich Village, early 1980s. The scene is a basement club. The singer, sultry-voiced, with no drama, but chock full of emotion, sings “My name is Luca…” She’s Suzanne Vega and she’s soon to be regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, a leading figure of the folk music revival. Vega seamlessly merges her poetry with contemporary folk song, a sound that is utterly unique and identifiable to her alone; she recently released her first album of new songs in seven years, Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles.

“For six weeks to two months, in the mountains, we dodged the same bullets and lived in the same foxholes” - Teru Kuwayama Storytelling is as old as time, and great theatre is storytelling at its best. Basetrack, directed by Seth Blockley, is a gripping performance piece drawing on the power of individual stories to examine the collective experience of those who have served in America’s longest war. This multi-disciplinary work, adapted by Jason Grote from a wildly popular Facebook page and One-Eight Basetrack, the website of photos and videos taken in Afghanistan by embedded journalist Teru Kuwayama, is at the intersection of theatre, music, new media, journalism, and technology.

EDGAR MEYER DOUBLE BASS Sunday • December 14 • 3pm “The most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively unchronicled history of his instrument” – The New Yorker Unique. Compelling. Brilliant. Unique because it’s not every day you hear a full-length solo concert by a classical double-bass player. Compelling, because his unparalleled technique and musicianship have won him a huge following; he plays before sold-out halls throughout the world. And brilliant? Just ask the MacArthur Fellowship people: they gave him a “genius” grant in 2002 (and let’s add that he’s the only bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize). It’s been more than 30 years since Midori took the classical music world by storm as an 11-yearold, last-minute violin replacement in a New York Philharmonic concert devoted to young performers. Three years later a front page headline in The New York Times proclaimed “Girl, 14, Conquers Tanglewood with 3 Violins.” It’s a great story, especially the part where Leonard Bernstein kneels before her in awe (Google it!). Either way, you can take down those drapes and re-purpose them as dirndls and lederhosen, put on your warm woolen mittens, or just wrap yourselves in brown paper tied up with string. This screening of the classic movie musical invites you to do what you’ve been doing in the privacy of your home every time you watch it: sing along! Come in costume if you’re up to it. And, yes, grownups: you can be 16 going on 17 all over again.

CONCERT ORCHESTRA
Keith Lockhart • principal conductor
“Its style is gutsy…the ensemble is solid and knows its way around a score” – Los Angeles Times
As the British Broadcasting Company’s “house band,” the BBC Concert Orchestra may be the most-heard classical ensemble in all of the United Kingdom. It prides itself on being a populist ensemble, playing a mix of classical, light classical, and popular music. Conducted by Poughkeepsie-born Keith Lockhart, also the conductor of the Boston Pops, the orchestra will be joined by 25-year-old pianist Charlie Albright, recipient of the 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant.

“Patti LuPone has a miracle of a voice. It can be as big and bold as a brass band or as plaintive as a solitary woodwind.” – People Her name is Patti LuPone, but, really, no last name is needed. With breathless enthusiasm people refer to her only by her first name. One fan will exclaim, “Did you see Patti as Rose in Gypsy? Brilliant!” Another will boast, “I loved Patti even before Evita.” Yet another: “As far as I’m concerned Cole Porter wrote Anything Goes for Patti!” The Broadway, concert, and cabaret star returns in all of her larger-than-life glory for a one-night-only concert of torch songs by such composers and lyricists as Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Billy Barnes, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, and Cole Porter, sure to delight aficionados of the American songbook. You too will be able to brag: “I saw Patti at The PAC. Magical!” Conceived and Directed by Scott Wittman Musical Direction by Joseph Thalken Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick Dialogue by Jeffrey Richman

The Neuberger Museum of Art
The Neuberger Museum of Art is the premier museum of modern, African, Latin American, and contemporary art in the Westchester/Fairfield County region. An outstanding arts and education institution, the Museum was conceived with the dual purpose of serving both as an important cultural resource to its regional, national, and international audiences, and as an integral part of Purchase College. The Museum’s mission is to educate our diverse audiences in, about, and through the visual arts. Our goal is to engage and inspire by actively fostering the story, appreciation, and understanding of our collection and changing exhibitions. This year, we will celebrate the Neuberger Museum of Art’s 40th Anniversary with two special exhibitions: Becoming Disfarmer: A Portrait Photographer and His Archive (Fall 2014) and Kuba Textiles: Geometry in Form, Space, and Time (Spring 2015). Special events and programming are also planned. Visit www.neuberger.org, subscribe to our e-news, or connect on Facebook for updates and information.
School of the Arts: Art+Design Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery
Located within the School of Art+Design, the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery presents exhibitions that provide professional context for students and interact with their daily classroom experience. The gallery’s program focuses on emerging artists, A+D alumni, current faculty, and student work. This series includes yearly MFA and BFA student group exhibitions. In conjunction with the Neuberger Museum, the School also connects artists whose work is featured at the Museum with students, often as a project space. Through this connection, students have the unique opportunity to work with professional national and international exhibiting artists, designers, and cultural producers.
The Passage Gallery
The Passage Gallery serves as a professional quality interdisciplinary media gallery and exhibition space for student work at Purchase College. The gallery opens new shows on a regular cycle of three to four weeks, representing the breadth of cultural production at the school. It provides a venue for a diverse array of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, video, and theatre design, as well as performance and conceptual art forms.
