Experience. Something. Real.

You are invited to turn off your cell phones and beepers, sit back, relax, and experience… something… AWESOME. Dear Arts Lover, We’re proud to be 35 years old during the 2012-2013 season! The season The Performing Arts Center opened, Jimmy Carter was still President, and a first-class stamp cost only 13 cents. Rocky had just won the Oscar and Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever premiered. The Yankees defeated the Dodgers in the World Series and Seattle Slew was the Kentucky Derby champion and Triple Crown winner. We lost several beloved entertainers who never needed more than one name: Groucho, Bing, and Elvis. Some of the artists we’ll be introducing you to in their Performing Arts Center debuts weren’t even born in 1977: Gabriel Kahane, Miloš Karadaglic, ´ and all five of The 5 Browns. Returning favorites like the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and Brentano String Quartet weren’t established until the 1980s and 1990s. Other artists we’ll be presenting this season were already stars in 1977, and they shine even brighter today: Barbara Cook, Sir James Galway, and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. These and the other artists in our 2012-2013 season, described in this brochure, share one thing in common. When the lights dim, the curtain rises, and they take the stage, they are simply awe-inspiring. We invite you to join us this season for awesome performers and performances. The 5 Browns One family, five pianos, fifty fingers

People magazine dubbed them the "Fab Five" and Oprah has raved about these kids, the first family of five siblings accepted to Juilliard simultaneously. But they're not just a gimmick, this quintet of young pianists are classical musicians of the highest order. Whether performing individually or together in various combinations from duo to complex five-piano arrangements, The 5 Browns bring a fresh, dynamic energy to music that has sent their CDs soaring to #1 on the charts and brought audiences to their feet for thunderous standing ovations. "The biggest classical music sensation in years." - New York Post Concert Hall • $57.50 / $47.50 / $37.50

Miloš Not yet 30 and already one of the world’s finest guitar virtuosos

Fans of classical guitar rank Miloš Karadaglic´ among the greats: Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream, Christopher Parkening, John Williams. Newcomers may first be captivated by his good looks and dark eyes that invite you to experience the music. When he picks up the guitar, you may expect raucous rock from one so young. Surprise! He is strictly classical, a charismatic, sensitive player with energy, precision, and a gentle touch. “…a giant tapestry of sound combining luminous melancholy and bravura energy.” - The Times This event is part of the Chamber Music Series. Warsaw Philharmonic The soaring sound of one of the world’s greatest orchestras Antoni Wit, General & Artistic Director Yulianna Avdeeva, piano The opportunity to experience the masterful playing of musicians that fill a stage from end-to-end — a true, full-scale orchestra on tour — is becoming increasingly rare. This is the opportunity! Conducted by the dynamic and expressive Antoni Wit, featuring the 2010 International Chopin Piano Competition winner Yulianna Avdeeva, the Warsaw Philharmonic’s performance of Beethoven’s final piano concerto, the Emperor Concerto, and Tchaikovsky’s last completed symphony, Pathétique, will be the kind of concert we rarely see outside of major cities these days…grand and soaring. “…rich, handsomely blended sound” - The New York Times This event is part of the Great Orchestras Series. Mark Morris Dance Group

Once the bad boy of dance, now a leading contemporary choreographer Can we really still call Mark Morris the “bad boy of contemporary dance,” as he has so often been described? He has choreographed more than 120 works since founding his company more than 30 years ago. Audiences who once raised skeptical eyebrows now cheer him, and his company’s engagements throughout the world are hot tickets. They now know to expect the unexpected — perhaps men in tutus and pointe shoes lifted by women — and they embrace it. His company’s performances are always accompanied by live music — perfect for an artist who describes himself as “a musician, in the form of a choreographer.” “His generation’s one and only.”- The New Yorker This event is part of the Dance Series. But nothing compares to seeing and hearing these a cappella musicians in person. The first vocal ensemble ever inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame, Chanticleer’s “vocal literature” ranges from Renaissance to jazz, from gospel to new music. These 12 guys in tuxes will transport you with the magic and majesty of the human voice. “The world’s reigning male chorus.” - The New Yorker Recital Hall • $52.50

Last chance to hear them play in Westchester County…ever This is it, your last chance to see the stellar Tokyo String Quartet at The Performing Arts Center! In April they announced that in June of 2013 the group will disband after more than 40 years as one of the most popular ensembles on the international music scene. This return to Purchase for their final performance under our roof makes this an “I was there when…” moment for our audience. Be there! “The most fitting way we could honor and celebrate our quartet’s long and illustrious career was to bring it to a graceful close.” – Martin Beaver, Kikuei Ikeda, Kazuhide Isomura, Clive Greensmith This event is part of the Chamber Music Series. Manhattan nightclub royalty John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey featuring the John Pizzarelli Quartet Back by popular demand! When they were last at Purchase in 2010 this dynamic husband-and-wife duo — he’s a jazz guitarist and she’s a jazz-wise singer — had our audiences in a cheering frenzy. Make no mistake, these two are individually soughtafter nightclub performers of the highest quality, consistently earning rave reviews for performances in New York’s leading supper clubs. But they also have the power, personality, and magnetism to fill large stages and concert halls. If you didn’t see them last time they were here, now is your chance; if you did, come back for another unforgettable evening of great music. “…utterly enjoyable…they have created some of the jazz world’s most consistently engaging entertainments” – International Review of Music Concert Hall • $72.50 / $62.50 / $52.50 / $42.50

A Meditation on The Rite of Spring The centennial of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring has prompted two great artists to collaborate on a dance/theatre work inspired and accompanied by what is arguably the most important score to be written in the 20th century. Anne Bogart and actors from her SITI Company will join forces with Bill T. Jones and dancers from the Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company to create A Meditation on The Rite of Spring. The world premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in Paris resulted in a riot; this unprecedented collaboration of two contemporary artists promises to be equally explosive. “We are taking the work apart and putting it back together again in a way that we both hope will speak to audiences everywhere.” – Anne Bogart & Bill T. Barbara Cook

There is no one else that even comes close Whether in a small cabaret or a large concert hall packed to standing-room-only capacity, Barbara Cook sings to you and only you. The connection she makes between the song and the audience is unparalleled, mesmerizing. At the age of 85, this legendary singer — with a career spanning ingénue roles on Broadway in the 1950s (she was the original Marian the librarian in The Music Man) to receiving the Kennedy Center Honors from the President just last year — has lost none of her luster. “Attending a Barbara Cook concert nowadays is like consulting an oracle.” – The New York Times Concert Hall • $102.50 / $87.50 / $72.50 / $52.50

Paul Taylor Dance Company

A pioneer of modern American dance A Paul Taylor Dance Company performance at Purchase is always a revelation. A second performance in as many seasons is an embarrassment of riches. Last November Mr. Taylor brought our audiences to their feet with the world premiere of Gossamer Gallants. At an age when most artists’ best work is behind them, he continues to win acclaim for the vibrancy, relevance, and power of his choreography. His program is still to be announced. Who knows what it will bring? We do know it will undoubtedly unleash a mix of surprise, grace, and humor. “Gossamer Gallants…with its breakneck speed and cartoonish costumes is a veritable hoot.” – The New York Times This event is part of the Dance Series. Brentano Celebrating their 20th anniversary Named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved,” this ensemble is indeed much loved by area audiences. The intimacy of their playing, whether they’re tackling very old works, very new works, or something in between, is incandescent. With praise such as “magnificent” from the London Times and “seemingly infallible instincts for finding the center of gravity in every phrase and musical gesture” from the Philadelphia Inquirer, it’s no wonder they have become one of today’s most popular string quartets. “…passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding” – London Independent This event is part of the Chamber Music Series. Colin Quinn That’s my story and I’m sticking to it Stand-up comedy with a healthy dose of tell-it-like-it-is cynicism, plus a side of takeno-prisoners satire — this guy is just plain fearless. He’s like a bartender with an opinion about everything, usually the right opinion (according to him) and often with teeth planted gently in the jugular. From Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update anchor chair to his own comedy series and Broadway show, his observational humor strikes with “I wish I’d thought of that” accuracy. His targets? The world. The USA. Politicians. Real people. Unreal people. And the occasional Kardashian. “Colin Quinn nails it!” – TIME Magazine Concert hall • $67.50 / $57.50 / $47.50 / $37.50

Joan Rivers

Can we talk? Can we tweet? Can we shop? When she asks “Can we talk?” she’s really saying “I’ll do the talking here.” She speaks for herself. “A man can sleep around, no questions asked, but if a woman makes nineteen or twenty mistakes she’s a tramp.” “I don’t exercise. If God had wanted me to bend over he would have put diamonds on the floor.” “I hate housework! You make the bed, you do the dishes and six months later you have to start all over again.” “I wish I had a twin so I could know what I’d look like without plastic surgery.” Joan Rivers, formerly Joan Molinsky from Larchmont, back in the Concert Hall for the first time in a decade. Located within the School of Art+Design, the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery presents exhibitions that provide professional context for students and interact with their daily classroom experience. The gallery’s program focuses on emerging artists, A+D alumni, current faculty, and student work. This series includes yearly MFA, MA, and BFA student work exhibitions. In conjunction with the Neuberger Museum, the School also connects artists whose work is featured at the Museum with students, oftentimes as a project space. Through this connection, students have the unique opportunity to work with a practicing exhibiting artist who isn’t a member of the School’s faculty.

School of the Arts

As part of the Visual Arts Building Exterior Envelope construction project, the gallery is undergoing significant renovations and will reopen during the 2012-2013 academic year with a new entrance and large windows facing the campus mall. Please visit the School’s website at www.purchase.edu/art+design for the latest updates on the exhibition schedule. Neuberger Museum of Art

Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, SUNY, is a vital cultural resource of modern, contemporary, and African art for the college, Westchester County, NY, and beyond. From the mid-century American art and African art that form the core of the collection to the presentation of contemporary art, we continue the commitment of founding patron Roy R. Neuberger by championing the art of our time. We are pleased to announce The State University of New York has allotted capital improvement funds to renovate and upgrade the Museum’s heating, ventilation, and airconditioning system. A stable environment is crucial for the proper maintenance of works of art. Therefore, the Neuberger Museum of Art will be on hiatus for the next 20 weeks. In the interim, the Museum will offer a series of special events off-site. Check neuberger.org, subscribe to our e-newsletter, or connect on Facebook for updates and more information.

Arts in Education We see it every time a young person encounters one of our programs, whether at The Performing Arts Center or in the community. A single spark, ignited by a thrilling encounter with a live performance or a gifted artist/teacher, can inspire a lifelong passion for the arts and a love of learning. This season at The Center we offer familiar events and artists as well as new discoveries selected to resonate throughout the curriculum and provide exceptional experiences for young people. But these events only scratch the surface of our programming as our work also takes us deep into the community. This year the nationally recognized Neighborhood Bridges program is expanding following overwhelmingly positive responses to our first year. Neighborhood Bridges brings together specially trained teaching artists and teachers in the English Language Arts classroom who use theatre and storytelling techniques to impact narrative and descriptive writing in the curriculum. In addition to expanding the program into more school districts, we are partnering with the faculty and artists of Purchase Opera, who will work with us to bring highly trained opera singers into classrooms and school assemblies. Yes, it only takes a single spark, and we continue to provide the kindling for the fire with outstanding performances, innovative residency opportunities, extensive study guides, and access to renowned artists and extraordinary teaching artists. For more information about our Arts in Education programs please call 914-251-6232.
