The Untold Story Behind The Miracle on The Hudson
history,” says Tom Hanks’s voiceover. “No one has ever trained for an incident like that. “Hanks stars as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. Aaron Eckhart plays Sully’s co-pilot, Jeff Skiles, and Laura Linney is cast as Sully’s wife, Lorraine.
THE STORY: On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed
the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. But was he a hero or did he make a near-fatal mistake? The post-crash investigation threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.
THE DIRECTOR
Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood (“American Sniper, Million Dollar Baby”) helms “Sully”. This is his 35th film as director.
A CRASH LIKE NO OTHER
am very glad my story is in the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood. – Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger

PAGE 4
DID YOU KNOW? Captain Sullenberger retired from U.S. Airways (now part of American Airlines) in March 2010. The film is based on Sullenberger’s book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters. This is the first time Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks have collaborated on a film. This is the second time Tom Hanks has portrayed a real life person where the events took place in 2009. He previously portrayed Captain Phillips in 2013, who was taken hostage by Somali pirates in April 2009. The airplane lost engine power, after hitting a flock of Canadian Geese. Each engine ingested at least two geese, weighing between 7 to 10 pounds. As a result, they could not produce enough thrust to systain flight.
Don’t expect a gushing biopic. This is a taut thriller, showing you what the public did not see: the grilling and ruthless investigation of Captain Sully. “When was your last drink, Captain Sullenberger? Have you had any troubles at home?”
’ve got 40 years in the air, but in the end I’m going to be judged on 208 seconds. – Captain Sully
Sully later told reporters he could not sleep for weeks after the crash. For the first few days, all he could think of was, “What if I did get this wrong? What if I endangered the lives of all those passengers?”
WHAT HAPPENED THAT MORNING
That afternoon in January 2009, Capt. Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger and his first officer Jeff Skiles took off from New York’s LaGuardia airport. Within minutes, both engines failed. The plane was just 3,000 feet in the air. The pilots swiftly plunked down the roughly 160-ton airliner in the water with barely a ripple to the aluminum skin. Only five of the 155 people on board suffered serious injuries. Hindsight maybe 20/20, but the truth is, Sully and Skiles’ entire flight that day lasted just 208 seconds from throttles up to touchdown in the water.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
Director: Neeraj Pandey Genre: Drama, Biopic Language: Hindi Release Date: 30th September 2016 Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Anupam Kher, Kiara Advani Studio: Fox Star Studios, Inspired Entertainment, Friday Filmworks Pic Courtesy: Fox Star Studios
The Story: The film traces the incredible journey of M. S. Dhoni from a ticket collector to an iconic cricketer.
From Tickets to Wickets
Mahendra Singh Dhoni reached Kharagpur as a 20-year-old in 2001, desperate for a job. Interestingly, it was his cricketing skills that helped him land a job as a ticket collector. The year was 2001. The then Railway Manager at Kharagpur Railway Station in Midnapore, West Bengal, was a cricket fanatic. He desperately needed a wicketPVR MOVIES FIRST

never knew what my parents thought about me when I was getting into cricket or what they felt about my journey. I never asked them.Through this film, I got to know. It was the most special bit. – M.S.Dhoni

Bet You Didn’t Know: • The city of Kharagpur in West Bengal, where Dhoni once worked as a ticket collector, has the longest railway platform in India. • Today, the Kharagpur railway station houses MS Dhoni Museum, built in the sports hostel room where he lived for a year. It showcases memorabilia such as his offer letter from the railways.
Reasons to Watch:
This is the biopic of a living legend; one of India’s most successful and beloved cricketers. As the tagline says, “The man you know: the journey you don’t.” The growing up years of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, his struggle to reach where he has, make for a story as thrilling as an ODI match. Veteran actor Anupam Kher plays MS Dhoni’s father in the film. The relationship between father and son is poignantly portrayed in the film. Actress Bhumika Chawla, whose role in Tere Naam made her an overnight sensation, returns to the screen as M. S. Dhoni’s sister. Two fresh faces will be seen in the movie opposite Sushant Singh Rajput. Kiara Advani is cast as Sakshi Dhoni, while Disha Patani makes her debut as his ex-girlfriend.

• Dhoni was known more as a football and badminton player than a cricketer during his school days. • During his stint as a ticket-collector, he worked long hours at the station and then headed out to play tennis-ball cricket, also known as ‘Khep’ cricket in that region. As expected, his skill at the game made him a mini-celebrity. • While playing for a couple of top clubs in his early days, Dhoni’s appearance price was Rupees 2,000 per match. He is currently India’s wealthiest sportsman.

An intensive shoot schedule was held at Mumbai’s Keenan Stadium and JRD Tata Sports Complex in utmost secrecy, to picturise Dhoni’s Ranji-playing days. The matches in the movie look authentic because more than 50 club cricketers were handpicked to play them. The film was shot at real locations, where actor Sushant Singh Rajput practiced for three hours daily on the ground with the coach. The lead actor suffered nasty bruises, fractured his ribs, twisted his ankle and broke his fingers during the shoot. But he mastered Dhoni’s signature helicopter shot, and says he can now play Ranji. Watch out for him!
Director’s Touch
Neeraj Pandey’s films have a trademark breathless pace and thrilling style. Here’s a peek at three superhit seat-grippers that he has directed so far: 1. A Wednesday (2008) A common man thinks up a unique way to protest terrorism, bringing the entire system down on its knees. 2. Special 26 (2013) Anonymous do-gooders play Robin Hood, playing cat-and-mouse with the cops 3. Baby (2015) A crack team of investigators sets out to capture a dreaded terrorist. PVR MOVIES FIRST

7 Best Sports Movies of All Time 1942: The Pride of the Yankees
This moving biographical drama follows the life of revered baseball player Lou Gehrig (Gary Cooper). Like most sports biopics of the time, this retelling about Gehrig’s life, career and ultimate demise from ALS is extremely sentimental and incredibly inspiring. The movie garnered 11 Academy Award nominations and is lauded for its realism as legendary Yankees Babe Ruth, Bill Dickey and Bob Meusel appeared onscreen as themselves. The standout moment of the film is Gary Cooper’s “luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech that beautifully captures the dignity, grace and resolve of one of the game’s true MVPs.

Stallone plays the quintessential guy who’s been pegged a loser so many times that he believes it. Then Bill Conti’s iconic score kicks in and, suddenly, Rocky becomes a symbol for finding the true winner in all of us.
1980: Raging Bull
“I didn’t know anything about boxing,” director Martin Scorsese once confessed, which probably explains why Raging Bull is such a brutal, unromantic portrait of the sport. Considered one of the greatest film ever made, it stars Robert De Niro (who gained a then-record 60 pounds and won the Best Actor Oscar) as prizefighter Jake LaMotta, whose violent bouts with paranoia and jealousy destroy his life outside the ring. Shot in black & white with fight scenes full of raw violence, the movie was quintessential Scorsese in the way it explored masculinity and how it poisons everyone in its path.
1976: Rocky
Written by Sylvester Stallone (who insisted he play the lead), this Oscar-winning hit is the ultimate underdog movie. It’s the story of Rocky Balboa, a broken-down boxer from workingclass Philadelphia, who gets one last, very unlikely chance to prove himself against the World Heavyweight Champion, played by a wonderful Carl Weathers.

Oscar-winning sports drama is a true cinematic masterpiece. A beguiling story of British resolve, imperial hauteur and religious tolerance, the movie is set in 1920s UK, and tells the true tale of two determined young runners, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) and their run to gold in the 1924 Olympics in Paris.
1986: Hoosiers
A dizzyingly feel-good sports movie about a troubled coach who motivates a group of underdog 1950s Indiana high schoolers to play the best basketball of their lives and helps them reach the state finals. Starring Gene Hackman, Barabara Hershey and Dennis Hopper (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar), the movie was loosely based on a true story about the 1954 Milan (Ind.) Indians basketball team. It’s a classic David versus Goliath fable helmed by Hackman’s perfectly-aged performance that’s filled with uncompromising decency.
2007: Chak De! India
A disgraced hockey player coaches the women’s national team to win back his honor and dignity. In terms of story, Chak De India wasn’t particularly a path breaking film. It was what you can call a by-the-book sports film. Yet, the film’s success proved to be a watershed moment in Bollywood as coach Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) coached sixteen young female hockey players all the way to World Cup glory.
2013: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the inspiring true story of India’s Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh, who came within a whisker of winning an Olympic medal. The film follows the life of the champion runner who overcame the massacre of his family, civil war PVR MOVIES FIRST

This month’s two most awaited movies, Pink and Baar Baar Dekho, are helmed by debutant directors. Here’s a quick introduction to both:
PINK
DIRECTORS’FIRST
The Director: Aniruddha Roy Chawdhary
He is an established name in Bengali cinema, with popular and award-winning films to his credit. Aniruddha’s 2006 debut feature, Anuranan (A Resonance) bagged the President’s Award for Best Bengali Film. He followed it up with Antaheen (The Endless Wait) which bagged the Golden Lotus for Best Film along with three other National Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Lyrics and Best Playback Sing (Female). First Chance: In 2011, Aniruddha and director Shoojit were on their way to the US for a recce for Aparajita Tumi. On the flight, he proposed the idea for PInk to Shoojit, who loved it and give it the green signal on the spot. The film revolves around how Deepak fights the girls’ case against these influential boys. Expect a thrilling courtroom drama. BAAR BAAR DEKHO
DIRECTORS’FIRST
The Director: Nitya Mehra
Baar Baar Dekho is Nitya Mehra’s debut film as director, but the lady has strong experience under her belt. After a stint as an advertising film professional, she directed eight episodes of 24, the Indian version of the hit international television series. Nitya has also assisted Ang Li in Life of Pi, and Farhan Akhtar in Don. First Chance: An intriguing combination of “high concept storytelling” and a “simple tale of love,” Baar Baar Dekho was not the easiest film to accept for a first-timer. The idea, felt its makers, was ahead of its time and needed sensitive handling. That’s when Nitya Mehra’s name came up, and producer Ritesh Sidhwani convinced her to don the director’s hat.

Subsequent features included Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Vol. 2 (2004) and Grindhouse (2007). Tarantino earned several award nominations for Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Django Unchained (2012), the latter garnering him a second Oscar win for best screenplay. His signature cinematic style features intense violence, immensely quotable dialogue, lavish pop culture references, characters with strong back stories, and the trademark trunk shot. Quotable Quentin: • “When people ask me if I went to film school, I tell them no: I went to films.” • “I was kind of excited about going to jail the first time and I learnt some great dialogue.” • “Violence is one of the most fun things to watch.” Iconic Film: Tarantino’s cult classic, Pulp Fiction brought him incredible commercial and critical success. Made for just $8 million, it earned over $108 million at the box office, becoming the first independent film to do so. PVR MOVIES FIRST

HISTORY
THIS MONTH 22 YEARS AGO
“Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes, really. Pressure and time.” Twenty-two years ago this month, The Shawshank Redemption hit multiplexes. The Plot: It’s a prison drama starring Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne, wrongfully convicted of killing his wife, her lover and serving two life terms, and Morgan Freeman as fellow lifer “Red” Redding, who narrates the film. AN INSTANT HIT? THINK AGAIN!: Despite great reviews, the film bombed, failing to earn even $1 million on its opening weekend. Final figures barely touched $16 million, way below its $25 million budget. That was then. Today The Shawshank Redemption tops the IMDb’s Top 250 cinema-favorites list with more than a million votes, having passed the previous champ, The Godfather, in 2008. RAGS TO RICHES: THE DIRECTOR’S STORY: In the 1980s, Frank Darabont was just another broke Hollywood aspirant imagining his name on the back of a director’s chair. Born in a French refugee camp for Hungarians fleeing the 1956 revolution, he grew up poor in L.A “I had no career whatsoever. I was nailing sets together on low-budget films to keep body and soul together,” he says. His life’s fondest dream was to direct a film based on a Stephen King story. He didn’t know how—or whether—that dream would ever come true. Today, Frank Darabont owns a Spanish villa in Los Angeles’s Los Feliz district. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are his neighbours. THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Shawshank Redemption is based on Stephen King’s short story. The film retains and changes many of the elements in the story. In King’s story, a minor character, Brooks, dies uneventfully in an old folks’ home. In the movie, Brooks cannot adjust to life outside prison, and commits heart-wrenching suicide by hanging. In the story, Tommy, a young con who can clear Andy’s name, trades his silence for a transfer to a minimum-security prison. In the movie, the warden has Tommy “chewed to pieces by gunfire.” Stephen King’s story had many wardens. Darabont condensed them into one evil man: Warden Norton, who eventually blows his brains out rather than face the law.
THE DIRECTOR’S DILEMMA: Castle Rock’s iconic director Rob Reiner “flipped” for the script, and made Darabont an offer almost no one would refuse: a rumoured $3 million to direct Shawshank himself. Darabont, who could barely meet the rent, was tempted and completely tormented by the offer. Reiner even promised to finance any other movie he wanted to direct if he let him direct this one. But 33 and in dire need, Darabont said No. “You can continue to defer your dreams in exchange for money and, you know, die without ever having done the thing you set out to do.” Interviewing Freeman is like speaking with a favorite uncle who also happens to be God. With a melodic voice that’s calm and authoritative, Freeman has commanded aural attention since his stint in the 1970s asThe Electric Company’s Easy Reader on PBS, where he sang, “I groove on all the words around,” in bell-bottoms. ACTOR SPEAK: “Shawshank was an absolutely delightful script. So I called my agent and said, ‘It doesn’t matter which part it is—I want to be in it.’ He said, ‘Well, I think they want you to do Red.’ And I thought, Wow, I control the movie! I was flabbergasted by that.” - Morgan Freeman. CASTING ANDY: Offers went out to the 1990s’ usual suspects for the part of Andy Dufresne. Tom Hanks and Kevin Costner passed. And though Cruise loved the screenplay, he refused to work with a new director. To Reiner’s credit, he made it clear that he would not interfere. ‘No, if you’re going to do it with Darabont, it’s his vision,” he told Cruise. So Tom Cruise refused, and Tim Robbins stepped in. Robbins used his A-list status to insist that Darabont’s inexperience—he’d directed only one made-for-TV movie, Buried Alive—be counterbalanced by a seasoned cinematographer, Roger Deakins, whom Robbins had worked with the year before on the Coen brothers’ film The Hudsucker Proxy. (Deakins would go on to shoot the death-row drama Dead Man Walking, which Robbins directed.) Brad Pitt was cast in the role of Tommy. But while he was shooting, Thelma & Louise released, making him an overnight star. The next day, he dropped out of Shawshank...
