Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion The Epic Saga Draws To An End

Two years ago, when “Baahubali: The Beginning” hit the theaters, no one could have imagined that it would go on to become a phenomenon. In fact, it went on to become the highest grossing Indian film within India, and the third highest globally. Almost everything about the movie: the story, characters, sets, VFX, and sound were masterfully done. The first movie ended at an important cliff-hanger. The iconic last scene of Katappa – the loyal guard of Baahubali — stabbing him from behind came in as a shock. Everyone was asking “Why?” and pretty soon the internet flooded with theories.

staunched. The sequel picks up exactly where the last one left. As Shivudu, the son of Baahubali finally comes to terms with his legacy, he starts seeking more answers. His story is juxtaposed with past events that

The Fate of the Furious

Tagline: Family no more Directors: F. Gary Gray Star Cast: Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Dwayne Johnson Genre: Action Rating: (U/A) Release Date: 14 April Studio: Original Film, One Race Films, Perfect World Pictures

When “Furious 7” ended sweetly with Brian O’Connor driving one way and Dom another, people thought it might be wise to let things rest. Especially after Paul Walker’s untimely death. But what do you do when the seventh film of your franchisee goes on to make more than a billion dollar and gets loved all over the world? Well, you go on to make its sequel. The Fast and the Furious franchise has been getting more insane and over the top with each installment. And to the fans’ delight, this ride isn’t stopping right now. The next installment of the most successful Hollywood franchise is happening and would hit the theatres on the 14th of April. PVR MOVIES FIRST

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

THE PLOT: Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon. Brian and Mia have retired from the game. The crew seems to have finally found a semblance of a normal. However, things change when Cipher (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom back into a world of crime. Unable to escape,

aul Walker used to say that an eighth film was guaranteed. And when your brother guarantees something, you sometimes feel like you have to make sure it comes to pass. – Vin Diesel, Actor

it makes him betray those closest to him – his family. The whole crew is now forced to team up with Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). They travel from New York City to the icy plains of the Barents Sea to bring home the man who made them a family — Dom. THE RETURNING CAST: “The Fate of the Furious” has added many interesting faces to its cast. Of course, the addition of Helen Mirren is the biggest surprise. But so is the inclusion of Scott Eastwood, who jumped in the franchisee right after finishing Suicide Squad. Eastwood would be joining the team of the good guys and play a government agent alongside Kurt Russell. While these are no doubt some great additions, more spotlight is on who all from the original cast are making their way back.

Evans) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Don’t expect “The Fate of the Furious” to be any different. The beautiful Charlize Theron has been signed on as Cipher — a badass villain who turns Dom to the dark side and wreaks havoc in New York. And she isn’t alone in this heist. Ruby Rose and Cara Delevingne are going to help run the dark side.

Although the Torreto family would be one short of its crew after Paul Walker’s untimely death, we expect most of the original cast to show up. In addition to Diesel, Fast & Furious mainstays Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris would be reprising their roles. Surprisingly, we won’t see Jordana Brewster this time around. And of course, Dwayne Johnson will be back as Hobbs. And guess what, he’ll be teaming up with Jason Statham (albeit forcefully) in a bid to get Dom back in the fold.

THE DIRECTOR: James Wan, the man who helmed the successful “Furious 7” won’t be returning for the sequel. Nor will be the most popular F&F director, Justin Lin.

THE VILLAIN: Each F&F movie introduces a meaner villain — from Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) to Owen (Luke

TRIVIA 01

F. Gary Grey previously directed Vin Diesel in A Man Apart (2003), both Jason Statham and Charlize Theron in The Italian Job (2003) and Dwayne Johnson in Be Cool (2005).

02

FF8 will honor Paul Walker’s wish by going back to more street racing, instead of relying on special effects and huge action sequences.

03

Vin Diesel and Ludacris posted on their Instagram accounts, an image for “Fast and Furious 8” with the backdrop of New York City, hinting at the new setting for the franchise. This will be the first time a Fast and Furious film will take place in New York.

04

This will be the first Hollywood movie to be shot in Cuba.

05

Cipher, who’s portrayed by Charlize Theron is the first main villain played by a female in the Fast and Furious franchise.

A big action sequence was shot in Iceland in April 2016. It was supposedly the biggest explosion scene ever filmed in Iceland.

F. Gary Gray, who directed the critically acclaimed “Straight Outta Compton” to lead the pack. Interestingly, this won’t be his first time around car chases. He is the same guy who executed the thrilling Mini-Cooper chase of “The Italian Job” remake in 2003. While the F&F films have by now become such well oiled machines that they can run by themselves, it’d be interesting to see what new flavours F. Gary Gray can add to the mix. PVR MOVIES FIRST

PURAB KOHLI

Purab Kohli, who plays the lead opposite Sonakshi Sinha in “Noor,” tells us about the movie and his role in it. What makes “Noor” a great watch To begin with, the casting. Sonakshi is great in the film. The audience has never seen her in this sort of a role, and she’s going to be a treat to watch. Shibani and Kanan have acted wonderfully, too. And of course, there is Manish Chaudhry, whom I regard as an actor par excellence—we worked together in “Prisoners of War” and another film in the past, and I think he is outstanding. The smaller characters are also extremely well cast. Most importantly, the story itself is wonderful. The film shows you a Mumbai you have never seen before! Is the film a thriller or an emotional drama? “Noor” is a mix of both, I would say. Essentially, it is the emotional journey of Noor; a coming of age film in which Sonakshi’s character finds her true self and accepts it. PVR MOVIES FIRST

GUEST INTERVIEW

What made you pick the role? The first thing that excited me that Abundantia Entertainment were producing the film. Having done “Airlift” with them, I was keen to work with them again. Secondly, the role was very interesting—it’s not something I have done before. I won’t tell you much about it; you should go see the film! And finally, the script itself! I was travelling when Sunhil got in touch with me. We exchanged a few Whatsapp messages, and he sent me the script. I read it in one go, over two hours or so; the running time of the movie. That to me is always a good sign—if you enjoyed reading it, people are going to enjoy watching it. Finally, meeting Sunhil just sealed the deal. Working with Sunhil Sippy He is quite a fascinating director. After a long time, I worked with a director who is so excited and so into his film. His passion drove “Noor.” I’ve seen bits and pieces of the film while dubbing for it, and it’s looking fantastic. I can’t wait to see it myself! PAGE 22

PVR MOVIES FIRST

PAGE 26

HISTORY Singin’ in the Rainhas gone down as the greatest musical ever made by MGM and possibly all of Hollywood. With incredible choreography, this witty screenplay about the making of movies and a collection of great songsis pure joy crammed into 103 minutes. The joyous film, co-directed by Stanley Donen and acrobatic dancer-star-choreographer Gene Kelly, is a charming, up-beat, graceful and thoroughly enjoyable experience with great songs, lots of flashbacks, wonderful dances (including the spectacular Broadway Melody Ballet with leggy guest star Cyd Charisse), casting and story. The film was an extraordinary example of the ‘integrated musical’ in which the story’s characters naturally express their emotions in the midst of their lives. Song and dance replace the dialogue, usually during moments of high spirits or passionate romance. Plot: A smug but romantic silent film star and swashbuckling matinee idol (Gene Kelly) and his glamorous blonde screen partner (Debbie Reynolds) are expected, by studio heads, to pretend to be romantically involved with each other. They are also pressured by the studio boss to change their silent romantic drama and make their first sound picture, renamed as the musical The Dancing Cavalier. There’s one serious problem: the temperamental, narcissistic star has a shrill, screechy voice—much like nails on chalkboard. How the characters save the day and find a happy resolution forms the fun, frothy story. The film humorously parodies the panic surrounding the troubling transition period from silents to talkies in the dream factory of Hollywood of the late 1920s, as the sound revolution swept through.

THIS MONTH 64 YEARS AGO The three star—Gene kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds—perform with delightful lightheartedness, as if they are giddy with joy. Kelly and O’Connor were established stars when the film was made in 1952. Debbie Reynolds was a newcomer with five previous smaller roles, and this was her big break. While it is tough to pick out one moment or element in this utterly joyous film, popular vote goes to Kelly’s soaking-wet “Singin’ in the Rain” dance number, whichhas been hailed as “the single most memorable dance number on film.” Quite simply, watching “Singin’ in the Rain” is like ingesting a heady happy drug. It’s the perfect antidote to the blues and puts you in a buttercup mood! Fun Facts: 1. The original negative of this film was destroyed in a fire. 2. It was voted the #1 movie musical in American film history by the American Film Institute in 2006. The song “Singin’ In The Rain” ranks #3 in their top songs. 3. The script was written after the songs, and so the writers had to generate a plot into which the songs would fit. 4. Only 19 when cast to play the film, Debbie Reynolds had to wake up at 4:00 a.m. and ride three different buses to the studio. Sometimes, to avoid the commute, she would just sleep on the set. 5. Gene Kelly choreographed his dance scenes with Cyd Charisse to hide the fact that she was taller than he was. To keep the height difference from being obvious, Kelly made sure they were never both standing upright when they were next to each other. 6. The first time they tried to film the “Singin’ In The Rain” sequence they shot it in the late afternoon. Unfortunately the residents nearby had just come home, and turned on their lawn sprinklers so there was not enough water pressure for the “rain” to work. They finally filmed the sequence the next day, when everyone had gone to work. 7. A microphone was hidden in Debbie Reynolds’ blouse so her lines could be heard more clearly. During one of the dance numbers, her heartbeat can be heard, mirroring what happens to her character Lina Lamont in the movie itself.
