Everything is fair in Love, War and Business

THE PLOT: Set in a Muslim ghetto in 1980s Gujarat, this action-drama tells the story of bootlegger Raees (Shah Rukh Khan) whose business is challenged and eventually thwarted by a police officer, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

DID YOU KNOW? Shah Rukh Khan has shot high-octane action scenes in the movie, without using a rope or harness.

THE ACTORS: Almost every time that Shah Rukh Khan has played a negative character, his films have been superhits. In Raees, he will be seen in a menacing, bearded avatar, with kohl-lined eyes to boot. His character is pitted against ACP Ghulam Patel, played by the mega-talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Matching wits and intensity, the actors power their battle with whistle-worthy dialogue: “Gujarat ki hawa PVR MOVIES FIRST

mein vyapar hai sahib. Meri saans toh rokoge, lekin is hawa to kaise rokoge?” Adding oomph to the proceedings is Sunny Leone, who appeares in the smoking-hot number “Laila.” THE DIRECTOR: Rahul Dholakia entered filmdom after a successful career in advertising. His 2007 film “Parzania,”

based on a true story, won rave reviews and fetched him a National Award. For Raees, Dholakia travelled extensively through Gujarat for two years, fleshing out his story and creating the world he wanted to set it in.

Reason to Watch

A movie based on a high profile criminal chased by a determined police officer, toplined by A-list stars and helmed by a National Award winning director, is bound to deliver white-knuckle intensity. Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, known for taking on quality projects, has co-produced Raees with Shah Rukh Khan’s studio, Red Chillies.

xXx:

Return Of Xander Cage

Tagline: It’s Good To Be Back! Directors: D.J. Caruso Star Cast: Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson, Deepika Padukone Genre: Action, Adventure, Thriller Rating: (U/A) Release Date: 20 January Studio: Columbia Pictures, Paramount Pictures, One Race Films, Revolution Studios, Roth Kirschenbaum Films

Vin Diesel is currently one of the biggest action superstars in Hollywood and he doesn’t like to do anything in half measures. The talk of him rebooting his role of Xander Cage in the xXx franchise — the one he helped launch back in 2002 — had been on cards for a long time. The fans knew that if he’s actually going to return, he would do everything in his power to push the action over the top. Finally after years and years of wait Vin Diesel marks his return as Xander Cage in... ahem, xXx: Return of Xander PVR MOVIES FIRST

PAGE 7

Although it’s been 14 years since we last saw Cage in action but it doesn’t look like he has missed a step in his hiatus. He still knows how to punch bad guys, ski through forests and skateboard off the sides of buses. THE PLOT: Extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel), thought to be long dead, comes out of self-imposed exile. He is set on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang (Donnie Yen) and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series’ signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to be ever be captured on film. THE PREQUELS: Released in 2002, the original xXx (pronounced “Triple-X”) cast Diesel as an extreme athlete and internet video star conscripted by a shadowy government agency to become a spy and infiltrate an anarchist terrorcell based on their shared lifestyle interests. Intended as a star-vehicle and franchise for the then-rising star Diesel shortly after his breakout role in “The Fast & The Furious,” the film was a box office success. Diesel ultimately passed on further sequels to pursue the Riddick franchise – before ultimately returning to the Fast films.

A sequel “xXx: State of the Union,” followed up in 2005 with Ice Cube replacing Diesel in the lead as Darius Stone, a new agent in the XXX program, who is sent to Washington, DC to defuse a power struggle amongst national leaders. THE CREW: Although original xXx director Rob Cohen was initially expected to helm “Return of Xander Cage” but he later dropped out of the project while it was stalled in development. When the project was moved back into active development in 2015, “Disturbia” and “Eagle Eye” director D.J. Caruso was attached to it shortly after Diesel confirmed his involvement. The film is based on a script by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen) and F. Scott Frazier (Collide). THE CAST: The third xXx film is being framed as an attempt to reinvent the brand in the mould of the Fast & Furious series, with Xander Cage being reworked from a solo antihero to the leader of a diverse team, aimed at appealing to a largely overseas international audience. Samuel L. Jackson returns to the franchise as an NSA operative who serves as Cage’s handler. “Ip Man” and

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Jim Carrey Comedian and actor par excellence, Jim Carrey turns 55 on January 17. Here are 5 fun facts about the Ace Ventura star, who shares his birthday with Michelle Obama and Muhammad Ali. 1. James Eugene Carrey was born in Canada, and even at a young age, would perform constantly. In school, his teacher struck a deal with Carrey: if he sat quietly, he could get a few minutes at the end of class to perform for his classmates. 2. When he was young, Carrey’s father lost his job and the family had to live in a camper van on a relative’s lawn. They all worked as janitors and security guards at a factory—Carrey himself worked an eight-hour shift straight after school. 3. In 1985, a broke and depressed Carrey drove his rickety Toyota up the Hollywood hills, and wrote himself a cheque for $10 million for “acting services rendered.” He post-dated it 10 years, and went on to become the highest paid Hollywood star. When his father passed away in 1994, Carrey slipped the check in the casket to be buried. 4. Carrey is not just an actor, but also a singer and performer. When he is not on the sets, he loves crooning great rock tracks such as “Rocket Man.” 5. He tried his first comedy routine when he was just 14 years old, wearing a bright yellow suit stitched by his mother. Unfortunately, the crowd was quite harsh and booed him off of the stage. Later, Carrey wore the same outfit in The Mask.

PETER JACKSON

A game changer in filmmaking, Peter Jackson is the man who gave us the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “The Hobbit” trilogy, and 2005’s “King Kong.” The story of how a man from Wellington, New Zealand came to lead some of Hollywood’s most ambitious and successful filmmaking projects, is part fairytale, part adventure, part gritty thriller. Early Life: Aptly enough, Jackson was born on Halloween, the only child of Bill and Joan Jackson, in a small seaside community near Wellington, New Zealand. Jackson’s first attempt at filmmaking was a remake of “King Kong” (1933), at the age of 12. Using a Super-8 camera given to his parents by a friend, he created a little model of Kong from rubber and wire, and some of his mother’s fur coat. Always a fan of gore, Jackson spent his young years making “splatter-films” such as “Meet the Feebles”, “The Frighteners” and “Dead Alive.” He quickly gained a cult following.

DID YOU KNOW? • Jackson’s life partner Fran Walsh, a seven-time Academy Award nominee and three-time winner, was a co-writer of 12 of his movies, including the blockbuster “Rings” trilogy

Up Next: Despite his success in the world of fantasy, the visionary director who started his career in the world of vampires and gore, longs to return to his roots. Jackson has said that he plans to make more zombie movies in future. Bring on the splatter.

• Jackson is among an elite group of eight directors who have won Best Picture,Best Director and Best Screenplay (Orig/Adapted) for the same film. • In 2010, Jackson received the Order of New Zealand for his services to the film industry. The Award is considered the Arts Foundation’s highest honour and is limited to a living circle of 20 artists. • Owns the rubber and steelskeletonized puppets made and used by the animators of the original King Kong (1933), his favorite movie. • He has designed his 1930s mansion in New Zealand like a fantasy playground, with castle ruins, tunnels and a live-in Hobbit hole. It even has a mock “torture chamber.”

He made King Kong next, and it scooped up three Oscars. In 2010, Jackson received the Order of New Zealand for his services to the film industry. The Award is considered the Arts Foundation’s highest honour and is limited to a living circle of 20 artists. His Style: Jackson’s most common visual trademark is shooting close-ups of actors. He likes to shoot scenes from multiple angles—ranging from low angle, high angle, pans and tracks, close ups, skewed angles and much more. He says this gives him more options and freedom at the editing table.

HISTORY Seventy years ago this month one of the most beautiful films ever made was released. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is the kind of movie you want your children to watch; its enduring message—that no matter what, life really is worth living—is potentially life-changing. Director Frank Capra revealed that of his own films, this one was his personal favourite. Lead actor James Stewart also named it his best work ever. It became the Christmas movie classic in the 1970s due to repeated television showings at Christmas time.

emember, George: No man is a failure who has friends.” – Clarence the angel

The Plot: George Bailey (James Stewart) is about to kill himself, and the angels need to send one down to Earth to stop him. They select Clarence (Henry Travers), a somewhat down-on-his-luck angel who hasn’t earned his wings yet, but who they decide is right for the job. The senior angels promise that Clarence will get his wings if he succeeds. Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be had he never been born. Wow Factor: The film was nominated for five Academy Awards (including Best Picture), has been recognised by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and is number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time. Movie Trivia: • “It’s a Wonderful Life” is based on “The Greatest Gift,” a 1939 short story written by Philip Van Doren Stern. After

spending several years trying to sell his story to publishers with no success, Stern self-published his work and sent it to 200 friends as a 21-page Christmas card in 1943. RKO Pictures bought the rights to the story, and the rest is glorious history. • This was the first and last time that Frank Capra produced, financed, directed and co-wrote one of his films. He predicted that the film would be shot in 90 days. It wrapped on day 90, and the cast and crew celebrated the achievement. • The movie might be set in the winter, but it was filmed in the middle of summer, so there are several moments where the hero is seen sweating despite it snowing! • At the time, painted cornflakes were the most common form of fake snow, but they posed a bit of an audio problem for Capra. So he mixed foamite (the stuff you find in fire extinguishers) with sugar and water to create a less noisy option.
