BADRINATH KI DULHANIYA This Holi, witness India’s first love franchise film
Love conquers all, but only after their two worlds collide, and with enough song, dance and humour. When Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt come together, you can expect something crazy, naughty and extremely Bollywood. They are back to floor you with their quirky one liners and sweet romance, flavoured with desi-style wooing.
This rip-roaring rom-com comes close on the heels of the runaway 2014 hit “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.” Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan) from Jhansi is smitten with Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) from Kota. He is a Class 10 pass who does ‘paisa vasooli’ for a living and she is a college student. After much persuasion, he wins her heart, but soon after, there is a twist. Their ideologies clash, and there comes a point when Vaidehi tells Badri, “Pyaar humare liye important hai, lekin usase bhi jyada important hai respect.” PVR MOVIES FIRST

REASONS TO WATCH
It is a total Bollywood masala film with colourful songs, action sequences and generous dollops of emotion. The crackling chemistry between Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt has struck gold in all their outings together. The accent and flavour of smallt own characters lends freshness and charm to the film.
TRIVIA
The music of the film is a winning blend of fun, foot tapping and melodious soft songs. The album boasts of five tracks by multiple music composers like Amaal Malik, Akhil Sachdeva and Tanishk Bagchi and lyricists Shabbir Ahmed, Kumaar, Akhil Sachdeva and Badshah. Get ready for a feeling of magical nostalgia with “Tamma Tamma,” Bappi Lahiri’s iconic song, which has been recreated for this film.
adrinath Ki Dulhania is not a sequel but a second installment. It’s a bit more grown up than Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. It gets dark with twists and turns, which people won’t expect in a Dharma movie. - Varun Dhawan
PVR MOVIES FIRST
Varun Dhawan signed the film without even reading the script, because he felt a special connection with its title. The actor reveals that his friends call him ‘Badri’ as an abbreviation of ‘brother.’ They apparently used to tease him, saying that even if he didn’t get a career in Bollywood, he would get roles in Bhojpuri cinema and everyone would call him Badri. When he read the title of “Badrinath Ki Dulhania,” he impulsively said an immediate “Yes.”

LOGAN
Tagline: One last time Director: James Mangold Star Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen Genre: Action/Adventure Release Date: 3 March Studio: 20th Century Fox
Wolverine returns for the last hurrah! Logan is the third and possibly final film in the Wolverine trilogy that’s tied to the current X-Men adaptations. It is the last performance of the character by Jackman, who has depicted the animalistic loner turned hero 9 other times. The film promises to be unlike anything we’ve seen before. It also introduces X-23, a female clone of Wolverine who first appeared in the comics in 2004.

power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing, old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first, he refuses, but the Professor reveals that he has been waiting a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine. She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins, and a decrepit Wolverine is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. THE PREQUELS: The X-Men film series is an American series of superhero films based on the fictional superhero team of the same name, who originally appeared in a series of comic books created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and published by Marvel Comics. With nine films released, the X-Men film series is the seventh-highest-grossing film franchise, having grossed over US$4.3 billion worldwide. The first film was “X-Men’ (2000) followed by ‘X2’ (2003), ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ (2006), ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ (2009), ‘X-Men: First Class’(2011), ‘The Wolverine’ (2013), ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ (2014) and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ (2016).

THE CREW: In November 2013, 20th Century Fox began negotiations for another solo film starring Wolverine with director James Mangold. He wrote the screenplay with Michael Green (Green Lantern) and Scott Frank, from a story by David James Kelly (Strawman) and him. The locations used were mainly Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi. Chas Jarrett was the overall visual effects supervisor. Marco Beltrami, who had previously collaborated with Mangold has composed the film’s music. THE CAST: Hugh Jackman will take a final bow as Marvel Comics’ clawed mutant Wolverine in the film. It also brings back fellow X-Men franchise actor Patrick Stewart as an aging Charles Xavier, who joins Logan for one last adventure in a future when mutants have all but disappeared from the world. Making her debut is young actress Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney, a young mutant who appears to have powers (and claws) similar to those of Wolverine. Much like the Marvel

TRIVIA 01
Logan’s release date is set for March 3. Numerically, that is 3/3, which could be a reference of the titular superhero Wolverine’s two sets of 3 claws.
02
The title of the film is a reference to Mark Millar’s graphic novel “Old Man Logan.”
03
In the scene where Logan is seen drinking at a graveyard, one of the graves has the surname “Peters” written on it. It is a reference to the actor Evan Peters, who portrays Quicksilver in the X-Men films.

This was thought to be the last film in which Sir Patrick Stewart will play Professor X, but later he stated his interest to reprise his role in future X-Men movies. The trailer includes the song ‘Hurt’ performed by Johnny Cash. James Mangold also directed the Johnny Cash biopic, “Walk The Line.”
Comics character X-23 (a mutant cloned from Wolverine), Laura appears to have all of Wolverine’s rage, strength, and fearsome weapons, but even less of the control Logan has struggled to develop over the years. Boyd Holbrook plays the infamous character known to X-Men comics fans as Donald Pierce. The leader of a dangerous, fanatical group of anti-mutant agents known as ‘The Reavers,’ Pierce is a recurring enemy and a dangerous one, responsible for the deaths of several characters. The Longest Standing Ovation in Oscar History (1972)
“Gone with the Wind” scene stealer Hattie McDaniel’s achievement of being the first-ever African American Oscar winner will surely go down as an important landmark of Academy Award history. The actress who won the supporting actress statue for her portrayal of Mammy—a slave on the Georgia plantation Tara—accepted the Oscar by saying “I sincerely hope I shall always be a credit to my race and to the motion picture industry.”
Longest Oscar Speech of All Time (1943)
The Academy bestowed an Honorary Award to legendary actor-director Charlie Chaplin in 1972. The night also marked the silent-era star’s return to the U.S. after a 20-year politically imposed exile for alleged communist sympathies. Hollywood celebrated it by giving him a 12-minute long standing ovation, the longest in Oscar history. “Words seem so futile—so feeble, I can only say thank you for the honour of inviting me here,” Chaplin said after accepting the award. He followed it by putting on his trademark bowler hat and cane that got the audience back at their feet.
Roberto Benigni Gets Excited (1999)
Ever wondered why the Academy has such strict time-limit policies for Oscar speeches? Well, you have to thank actress Greer Garson for it. Garson, who won the Best Actress award for “Mrs. Miniver” went on to address the crowd for a record seven minutes at one in the morning. first nominated all the way back in 1994 for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” received a standing ovation and the news of his win broke the Internet. He used his acceptance speech to highlight the dangers of climate change, a cause he is closely associated with.
His sudden death in 2008 due to drug overdose shocked Hollywood. But his stunning portrayal of Joker in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” immortalised him in the history of cinema. The actor won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work which his grieving family accepted on his behalf with a touching speech.

Ellen’s Star Studded Selfie (2014)
DANIEL CRAIG Dashing Daniel Craig, perhaps the most popular James Bond to have seared the screen, turns 49 on March 2. Here are 5 fun facts about the 007 actor, who shares his birthday with superstar singer Chris Martin. 1. Craig was wrapped in a copy of ‘The Guardian’ newspaper by the midwife, before she handed him to his parents. What happens when Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto and Angelina Jolie all pose for the same picture? It goes viral on the Internet. Ellen DeGeneres who hosted the 2014 Oscars wanted to break the record for the most retweeted photo of all time. So she herded all the superstars in the same shot and posted it online. According to Twitter numbers, 37 million people worldwide took a look, which in turn caused the site to crash.

2. He initially refused the role of Bond, because the producers did not hand him a script. It was Pierce Brosnan who convinced him, saying, “Go for it; you’ll have the ride of your life!” 3. After filming for “Casino Royale,” Craig had his body insured for $9.5 million. 4. He worked as a chef in a pub before he got his big break in the movies. He loves to whip up a meal with his wife, and says, “When I go into a kitchen, a shiver runs down my spine.” 5. He is actually afraid of guns. He was petrified after seeing a real bullet wound and the fear never left him.

TAAPSEE PANNU
GUEST INTERVIEW
Taapsee Pannu, who plays the lead in “Naam Shabana,” tells us about the movie and her role in it.
how to deliver kicks, punches and flips. The adrenaline rush was thrilling!
How did the idea for “Naam Shabana” strike? There is an interesting story to it. I was a last-minute entry to “Baby.” The role was small but made a huge impact, and the love I received for it set director Neeraj Pandey thinking. While “Baby” was being made, he began writing the back story of the woman who turned the tables on a deadly terrorist. “Baby” was about a single-minded mission; this is the story of a life.
“Naam Shabana” also introduced me to the fascinating world of spies. Intense research went into the role, and while reading up on spies across the world, I felt increasingly intrigued and humbled by their daring, danger-laced lives.
Is it an out-and-out thriller? Yes, there a twist at every turn, and you will be inching closer to the edge of your seat throughout. This is a world of mind games, where spies are chosen and tossed before ruthless enemies. If they die, no one cares. If they win, no one hears their name. The fact that the spy in this film is a woman gives it a layered, more emotional story—you will not only watch Shabana kick some serious butt, but also see her life unfold before you. How did you train for the role? The training began the moment I signed “Baby.” I had barely three weeks in which to learn martial arts. While I have always been a sporty person, I have never so much as slapped anyone in my life! And here I was, learning PVR MOVIES FIRST
Most exciting part of being Shabana To begin with, the very fact that a director as intense as Neeraj Pandey wrote a movie script for my character felt incredible. Then in the movie itself, we have said that the spies are trained by the best. It resonated with me in real life as well, because I was actually trained by the best—Akshay Kumar himself supervised my entire martial arts training, in a movie where I have more action than him and even take him down. You can’t get a better mentor than that! Characters to watch out for in the film We have retained the cast of “Baby” because “Naam Shabana” is intimately tied to it. So, all the key players from the original have extended cameos. But two characters who take centrstage are Manoj Bajpayee and Prithviraj, the superstar of Malayalam cinema. He is the villain in Shabana’s story. Not only is he a towering presence, but a phenomenal actor. I have to say I felt quite intimidated by the sheer force of his talent, initially! PAGE 22

His films were never mounted on a grand canvas, and never followed a popular formula. They dripped romance, but always with a subtle touch. They could soak three hankies in your tears, and when they tickled your funny bone, you could roll down to the floor laughing. Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Hrishida as he was fondly called, made more than movies—he made cinematic magic. Early Life & Career: Hrishikesh Mukherjee was born in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata). A chemistry graduate from the University of Calcutta, he wanted to become a bio chemist and started teaching mathematics and science at a school. During his teaching days, Hrishida picked up a keen interest in photography and used to discuss the craft with a friend who was a film editor. Soon, he became such an expert that he even started advising his friend on how to edit particular segments. Their one such conversation was overheard by famous director Bimal Roy, who later asked him to edit his film. The venture was a success and Hrishida shifted to Mumbai to work with Bimal Roy as an editor and assistant director.

Awards and Recognitions: For his contribution to Indian cinema, Mukherjee was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1999) for Lifetime Achievement in Filmmaking and the Padma Vibhushan (2001), India’s second highest civilian award.
• He served as Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and of the National Film Development Corporation. • An animal lover, Hrishikesh Mukherjee had 13 pet dogs at one point.
Centering on an old house with three unrelated stories themed around birth, marriage and death, “Musafir” was an ambitious, if unsuccessful, experiment in episodic structuring and failed at the box office. But the film’s content and Hrishida’s direction impressed Raj Kapoor, who felt that the movie was far ahead of its time. He strongly recommended Hrishida as director for “Anari” (1959). Commercially successful and critically acclaimed, “Anari” brought well-deserved recognition for Mukherjee. Hrishida’s third film, “Anuradha,” about a neglected housewife’s relationship with another man, won the National Award that year. The rest of 1960s brought Hrishida mixed success, with “Asli-Naqli” (1962), “Anupama” (1966), “Aashirwad” (1968), and “Satyakam” (1969) particularly standing out from the lot. 1970s and Anand: While Hrishida made some fine films during the 1960s, his true genius shone forth in 1971 with that timeless classic: Anand. The film traced the final months of a terminally ill man who wishes to live life to the full before he dies. The movie saw Rajesh Khanna deliver his greatest performance and announced Amitabh Bachchan’s arrival in Bollywood. Anand was the epitome of Mukherjee’s mature style of cinema. It drew a detailed picture of middle-class sensibilities, lined with deep intelligence and observation. His direction emphasised purely on narrative, minus any camera tricks or technical flourishes.

HISTORY It is an iconic artistic masterpiece and the most revered musical movie ever; unparalleled in its appeal to wide audiences. “The Sound of Music” is a great story indeed—evocatively written, powerfully performed, and beautifully depicted. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical “The Sound of Music,” based on the memoir “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Maria von Trapp. It has everything, from a fairy-tale romance to soaring music, spectacular scenery, thrills, love, terror and ultimately, triumph! Nominated for 10 Academy Awards, it won five, for Best Picture, Best Director, Editing, Music and Sound. And more than half a century later, its appeal remains as fresh as ever. PLOT: Young Maria (Julie Andrews) wants to be a nun but is a bit too impetuous and independent for the abbey. She is sent by the Mother Superior to be employed by a local Salzburg widower, the retired Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), as governess for his seven children. After bringing love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith. When the Nazis take over Austria, the Captain is ordered to take command of a naval force within the Third Reich. He decides to flee with his family over the mountains into Switzerland rather than act in a manner that he believes will be against the interests of his Austrian homeland. The film has a certain intangible magic that makes it special— you can credit the great direction, the chemistry between Plummer and Andrews, the beautiful settings, the incredible music. It’s all of these things, of course, but the movie is ultimately so successful because of the amount of love that’s present in it: the love of music, of freedom, of family and the love between a man and a woman. WOW. FACTORS: This movie continues to reach out to every generation, thanks to the director’s brilliant handling. For Wise, connecting to the viewer was the “most important part of making a film.” His attention to detail and well researched preparation has made this film the juggernaut of cinema.
THIS MONTH 51 YEARS AGO The film opens with one of the most unforgettable shots in movie history, as the camera sweeps over the breathtaking peaks of the Austrian alps, and zooms in to find Julie Andrews twirling around and singing her little heart out on a windswept hillside. Ted McCord catches the beauty and fascination of the terrain on his camera, combining the splendour of towering mountains and quiet lakes with the old world grace of the historic City of Music, a stunning complement to interiors shot in Hollywood. The collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Each song is a classic. Indelible, indestructible, magnificently structured, they make you want to watch the film over and over again. Andrews is pure joy to watch. She has gone down in history for the performance of a lifetime (and a voice to match), but Plummer is not to be forgotten. Not only is he regal and handsome, but his portrayal of the Captain as a complex, sophisticated man with a sly dose of sarcasm is a lesson in acting. Every supporting performance is delivered with the right amount of appeal, humour or menace as is called for. Every technical credit is top notch and impressive. William Reynolds’ editing is bright and seamless. The costumes designed by Dorothy Jeakins catch the essence of the moment and the scenes. Set decorations by Walter Scitt and Ruby Levitt are in keeping with the high excellence of the picture. The choreography by Marc Breaux and Dee Dee Wood lends a colourful vividity to the screen. FILM FACTS: • The film was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, and the highest grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, it was the highest grossing film of alltime, surpassing ‘Gone with the Wind.’ It held that distinction for five straight years. The film was just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box office records in 29 countries. • The gorgeous outdoor scenes were shot in and around Salzburg, Austria, and the interior scenes were filmed at the 20th Century Fox studios in California. • It is credited as the film that saved Twentieth Century Fox, after the debacle of Cleopatra (1963).Originally Paramount had the rights to the Von Trapp family story, intending to make a movie with Audrey Hepburn as Maria, but when Hepburn declined the role, Paramount dropped plans for filming. • Julie Andrews almost turned down the role of Maria because she feared it was too similar to her previous role as Mary Poppins. She learned how to play the guitar for the film. • The wedding had no priest. Apparently someone forgot to wake the actor who was playing the part of the priest officiating the wedding between Maria and the Captain.
