2011 PWDCC/PWDCOntario Water Trials 2 Trials Saturday August 27 and Sunday August 28 Laurel Creek Conservation Area Waterloo Ontario From Lorraine Wilson, Water Trial Chair The 8th annual PWDCC/PWDCOntario Branch Water Trials were held this past weekend at Laurel Creek Conservation Area in Waterloo Ontario. We had a great turn out with 18 teams competing. The weather was fabulous – with sun and minimal wind – great conditions for all levels. This was a new site for us and it worked very well for handlers and dogs alike. I would like to extend a hearty thank-you to my committee members who worked tirelessly – the trial ran smoothly and everyone seemed to enjoy their trialing experience. for the beautiful CWD plaque and for Roslyn’s very kind speech. I am looking forward to seeing the Canadian CWDs on it. I am so happy that water work in Canada is alive and well. I believe our program can only grow and become even more successful. The PWDCC really does hold very good trials and I am proud of all of us!! So again congratulations everyone. I am already looking forward to next summer. Too bad it is so far away!! 2

launch the boats due to 3 foot high waves and winds. But when we cautiously peeked out our windows Saturday morning, the weather looked promising. Due to a very accommodating judge and participants we were able to proceed with the fun match and trial on Saturday. It was a very successful trial! We had 43 entries over the 2 days from 12 families. We had 21 fun match entries and $30 in donations. Plus various donations over the weekend by many families including ones not even entered! The get together feast Saturday night featured enough food and variety, including salmon, smokies, burgers, etc. that it was surprising we could get up and move the next day for another round of water.

Highlights of the PWDCC Board Minutes
consecutive terms, how do we cycle on, off so the whole committee isn't changing out at once, regional representation requirements and anything else.
May 12, 2011
Email motions: 1. Roslyn moves that the PWDCC authorize an expenditure of up to $2,000.00 to construct a custom double boat trailer which will be located in Ontario, seconded by Herb. In favour: Judy, Henri, Lori, Karine. APPROVED.
Present: Herb Szauerzopf, ON; Henri Berube ON; Roslyn Eskind, ON; Mindy Selby, Prairies; Glenda Newton, Quebec Absent: Lori Crandlemire, BC; Judy Cheguis, Prairies; Karine Simard, PQ Minutes of April 14th meeting Motion to accept minutes moved by Glenda, seconded by Mindy Approved. Treasurer/Secretary's Report Bank Balance $27,423.26 PayPal Balance $673.40 Membership 121 Active members Puppy Introductory Offer 55 Active members Motion to accept the Treasurer's report moved by Glenda, seconded by Mindy. Approved Old Business Amendment to Breeder Listing Update Email discussion on re-thinking the requirement to have ALL LITTERS reported to the Breeder Contact. We are thinking that perhaps a better course would be to ask breeders participating on the Breeder List to report all litters (and supply the health testing on the breeding pair). The other requirements that all on the Breeder List must now participate in the New Puppy Introductory Offer and that IC is now a required test for at least one of a breeding pair will remain as new initiatives. And the reason? Although, in principle, I understand our motion and application to all breeders whether they are on the Breeder List or not, in practice: What do we do if there is an oops litter without full testing? What do we do if someone uses a stud under 2, just on the hip prelim? What do we do if someone doesn't do all the testing? Are we going to be in a position of 'throwing people out of the club'? Are we going to have people who do the testing object to us 'looking over their shoulders'? Too Orwellian and big brotherish? Are we going to polarize our membership and in a sense destroy our club? Motion by Roslyn: To Amend the motion from the Feb. 10th meeting to Breeders who participate in the PWDCC Breeder List whether they use the Litter Due listing or not must submit all litters and the required and recommended health testing to the Breeder Coordinator. Seconded by Henri. Approved. New Business Report of the Water Trial Committee The committee met Thursday May 5th (teleconference) Cathy Gadd is Chair, Mindy Selby is Board liaison, Audrey Hawthorne, Tammy Hibberson, Lorraine Wilson are members. Mindy spoke to the committee's questions: how the Committee is governed: such as how many members (max, min), how long a term, how many

SEPTEMBER 2011
2. Roslyn moves that the PWDCC Board appoint Glenda Newton as a board member and PWDCC director, Quebec, for the current term of 2011/2012, seconded by Herb In favour: Mindy, Judy. APPROVED. New Business Mindy announces a new Water Trial that the PWDCC Water Trial Committee has approved the first Alberta Water Trial, out of Edmonton September 3/4 2011, Judge Sarah Kahn Andy Gamache will get the boats, trailer and equipment from Mavis McClintock on Vancouver Island The WT committee is looking for direction on governance from the board. Questions like: Terms Turnover By Laws state that committees of the board are appointed, there is no specification of time commitment. Some overlap would be appropriate to make for smooth transitions. Are representation from every region important. Article 5 By Laws talks to standing committees, very open ended, not much specific Perhaps terms could best be modelled on board participation rules. There are no real committee rules and perhaps the board should consider formalizing this. National Specialty Selection of judges, the panel is very good and we should be able to select from the panel without additional expense to the club. The format we follow is: Selection of Sweepstakes judge is again a breeder/handler judge We consider gender, locality in selection. Roslyn will distribute a roster asking board members for additional selections for Sweeps, Specialty and Booster and once this is done the members will vote. All sitting board members should be excluded. AGM Postponed until 2010 financial statements are complete, the final three months will be done at the end of May, and then a notice can be sent out with 60 days notice. So August looks like a likely date. This will be a phone in teleconference. Next meeting June 9 Motion to adjourn made by Henri, seconded by Roslyn. Approved.
June 16, 2011 Present: Herb Szauerzopf, ON; Henri Berube ON; Mindy Selby, Prairies; Glenda Newton, Quebec, Lori Crandlemire, BC; Judy Cheguis, Prairies; Karine Simard, PQ; Roslyn Eskind, ON; (joined 8:20pm) Report of the Secretary/Treasurer June 14, 2011: Bank Balance $28,699.96 PayPal Balance $763.46 Membership 125 Active members Puppy Introductory Offer 58 Active members Report from the Secretary. Motion to accept by Henri, seconded by Mindy. Approved. Report from the Treasurer. There is a problem with 2009 statements, and the segregation of accounts that still needs to be worked on. New Business Water Trial Committee meeting. The Alberta Water Trial is approved and planning is moving forward. The location for the Ontario Trial is still being finalized. The Water Trial Committee is still looking for guidance on governance. Mindy will come up with some guidelines for their discussion. Request from Alberta to have a separate bank account for the Alberta Trial. Roslyn responded that as it was a PWDCC trial, the monies should flow through our account. They can deposit directly to our account, however, cheques are issued based on an approved budget and an advance can be given if needed and requested. The PPM specifies $200.00. We have already approved $350 for Andy Gamache for his expenses to retrieve the boats. National Specialty Selection of Judges (the board went in camera, as this is confidential) AGM The meeting has to be postponed pending the statements being finalized. Translation of PWDCC New Puppy Offer and Web site Karine reports that people are interested in the Waterlog. If we translate anything why not start with this? Or should we choose just a part to translate something relevant to areas where Franco-Ontarians and Quebecers are located? With production of the newsletter, it might be difficult to keep the schedule intact. It would be expensive to hire a translator. I don't know if translation of the Puppy Offer material would be helpful. Perhaps we should start with the web site, as it's static and it could be done section by section. Perhaps have the standard, the CKC has now done that so that could be done right away. Then perhaps do “About the Club” or “About PWDs”. We can ask other French speaking members to help and put together a timeline for this. Glenda volunteers her husband to help. Judges’ Education Karine inquired what do we have? We have a Judges' Powerpoint presentation that shows the key characteristics and standard and it has been used on several occasions. Judges and the CKC are very specific about what is required to credit judges with educational credit. We have hands-on dogs to demo the range of coat, colour and size. Roslyn will distribute a PDF copy of the presentation. Can this be used within the club for our breeders? Isn’t this just a sharing of knowledge. Perhaps at the Specialty?

comments from fellow participants with MUCH more
“Gamblers” is a particularly challenging class where you are expected to SEND AWAY your pet (who you’ve previously likely trained to stick by your side,) over, through and around obstacles “remotely” at a distance of up to 20 feet from you. The dog has to leave the handler behind the “gamble line” and has 20 seconds to complete the sequence of obstacles at the end of the gambler’s course. It goes by fast!! In each event, the goal is to run “clean” that is, to successfully take every obstacle and jump in their proper sequence, clear all the jumps without knocking bars and to run fast, as the “team” is scored both on accuracy and speed… but no pressure!! It’s fun for the dog and the handler… and very challenging for
experience than I, affectionately complaining how unfair it is that we have such brilliant dogs!! And how Chauncey and Chase appear to do anything and everything I ask of them on the agility course! And when I lose my way (which I have done on more than one occasion) the boys seem to figure it out for themselves!! It really is true, that with what seems to have been a minimum of effort on my part Chauncey and Chase have each achieved significantly competitive results in Agility, and now also at the National level. Handler teams came from across Canada for the Nationals, having qualified at their respective Regionals. The year’s training, trials and games culminate in this final series of games and for some of us the pressure can be a wee bit intense! (Not for the dogs – for them it’s just another couple of days of fun with their humans!) Saturday and Sunday games start at 6 30am. So it’s up at 4:30 am (nobody should have to do this) in order to arrive at Burl’s Creek in time for the course “walkthroughs.” “Walkthroughs” are a period of 45 minutes where the handler (minus dog!) is permitted to walk the three courses in the early

morning fog and dew, (rubber boots recommended) that he/she will run with their canine partner over the course of the day. both. Things can go very right or very wrong in a hurry, and without good coaching and instruction, it’s sometimes hard to know why! There’s lots to learn, but it’s fun to see progress in developing skills and improving performance.
As there were approximately 600 dogs competing, Saturday and Sunday were long days. While having two dogs running kept me twice as busy as some, I enjoyed getting to run three courses twice each day! Both Chauncey and Chase accomplished far more than they ever have before in any Agility trial, so it was really a thrilling weekend for us!

Sniffingacrossthecountry… Agility is a sport where there is no limit to how much your team can improve. This game can really grab hold of you, what was initially a mild interest in a fun activity that promised to help with excessive portie energy and brains, has become (for me at least!) a border line addiction to the adrenaline rush of running a challenging course with my best canine friend(s) beside me! I should point out, that if you are interested in exploring this

The 2011 World Dog Show July 7 French National Championships and July 8 World Show for PWDs (Group 8) Roslyn Eskind, John Brown and Mindy Selby decided a dog show in Paris was not to be missed especially if it was the World Show where 36,000 dogs were expected! You can only imagine the logistics! With support from Mindy Selby, our ‘kennel help’ and Danik Dancause as our handler we set off to conquer Paree. We were happy with our results, Ruby, Ch Seabury’s Goodby Ruby Tuesday, RCAC was Reserve Winners Female at the French National Show, and was second in her class on both days. Nash earned an Excellent rating at the World Show although the Portuguese Judge lamented he didn’t have enough coat and to bring him back to him when he had a longer coat! Also attending was Donna Gottdenker and her dogs’ results were Claircreek Emilio Robusto 1st in Open Males and Winners Male for the French National Show and 4th Open Male for the World Show. And for both shows: Claircreek Dolce Cordelia 3rd Open Female and Claircreek Vesta Da Cozhina 2nd Intermediate Female. ’’Way To Glow Da Pedra Da Anixa” was Best of Breed and Best in Group winner, owned by Ana Santos of Portugal Interestingly in France the curly and wavy coated dogs are shown separately. It was fun seeing the European PWDs, the profuse coats, the ‘style’ of dog shown, and making contacts with breeders from England, France, Portugal, Sweden, Holland and Italy. Also interesting was seeing breeds not usually seen in North America, but frankly it was difficult to find time to really see the show. After the show we spent time in the Loire, then back to Paris for some well earned vacation time. The dogs enjoyed the cafés and fine restaurants. The park at the Eiffel Tower allowed them to stretch their legs. Now their resumés include a trip to France, enjoying café dining and chic Parisian hotels! Top the gardens of Chateau Villandry, and relaxing in the Paris hotel, pauvres chiens!
