ThePresident’sLetter What a wonderful, fun filled and action packed summer for our breed! Many thanks to all participants in the Alberta and Ontario water trials as well as our Regional Specialty held in conjunction with the Kilbride Kennel Club show in Milton, Ontario. As always, our club volunteers shone and go the extra mile to make our events a success. Special mention to June Murdock who achieved Apprentice Water Dog at the Ontario water trial after ten attempts! She is an inspiration to all of us and a lesson in persistence and patience when working with our animals. As we go forward into the fall months and prepare for 2014, the Board is reviewing several policy issues that we feel will continue to improve and solidify our commitment to our breed and those we serve. We are reviewing our Breeder Referral Program and also our Rescue Program. Lorraine Wilson has resigned as our Rescue Co-ordinator which has created an opportunity for us to review and continue to revamp our systems and outreach to PWD’s in need. Thank you Lorraine for your time and energy to this program. We have decided to have regional Rescue representatives. Mavis McClintock
will represent the west, Michelle Jackson will represent Ontario and Jennifer Byers will represent Quebec and eastern Canada. The representatives will report to the President in the event that a dog is in need of rescue. More details to follow in the next Waterlog regarding procedures for this program. Thank you so much fellow board members for stepping up and volunteering for this very important role. We continue to welcome our membership to volunteer in any capacity in our club. Please let us know if you are interested in water, conformation or rescue activities. We are including the 2014 membership renewal forms with this mailing. You can renew with easy credit card or PayPal payment options. Many thanks in advance, Sharon Lapstra, MSW, RSW President, PWDCC

Judges José Homen De Mello, Specialty; Kris Cofiell, Sweepstakes and Junior Handling wonderfully kept. His rear is powerful and well angulated. Because he has such an excellent construction and wonderful temperament, it’s a joy to see him going up and down and around the ring. The only thing I could say is, he could be a bit bigger for a male. But nobody is perfect!!! I very much enjoyed the day and I would like to thank all the PWDCC members for the wonderful hospitality, and atmosphere around the ring. Thank you all again for the wonderful time I spent judging PWDs in Canada!!!

While the overall numbers were not large, the quality of the dogs and bitches entered in Sweepstakes was phenomenal. I was pleasantly surprised to see upon viewing the catalog that 6 of the 8 Juvenile entries were Canadian Champions. All had excellent temperaments and were well presented by both owners and professionals. Portuguese Persistence WOW!! We finally did it – Apprentice Water Dog! It has been four years (twice a year) in coming. My family kept expecting us to give up. I knew Sula ( Lahronza's Lady Ursela ) could do it all, but we had to do it all at one trial. In the beginning I was the problem. I don't swim, so even when we had passed everything up to then we failed the swim. Sula would come out to swim with me, but with little movement on my part, by the time we were to come in she seemed to say, “You are too slow so I’ll meet you on the beach.” We tried to overcome this problem by having my friend and training partner – Kathy Hick, do the swim with Sula. This didn't work either because, even though she loves Kathy and in practice would do it, at the trial she refused. When the site changed so I could walk with her, that solved the swim problem. Then, just to keep it interesting, we managed to miss on other parts like picking up the toy but crossing the 3 foot line with it. Then it was that dreaded 3 foot line again – Sula would retrieve well but not bring things all the way across before dropping them. It was discouraging at times but we finally got it all together at the August Water Trial in Waterloo. When the judge announced our achievement the other participants cheered so loudly it brought tears to my eyes. What a supportive group! We want to thank our judge, Amanda Ford, training partners Kathy Hick and Kona, Lorraine Wilson for her great ideas, and everyone who has helped us along the way. Sula even gave our judge a thank you kiss. Why didn't I give up? Well with a wonderful dog like Sula we had to see it through. She is a Portuguese Water Dog, remember! June Murdock and Sula

PWDCC Alberta Water Trial Results July 14, 2013 Wizard Lake, Alberta Judge Charles White, Houston Tx July 14, 2013, 16 Entries
Another successful Alberta Water Trial is in the record books! The day was a great one for a trial, early on it looked like we would have another rainy trial but the sun poked through and it was nice without being a scorcher. The site was wonderful, the judge tried his best to pass us all and the volunteers were the best! Out of the 16 entries, 15 competed and we had 6 passes in 4 levels, junior to courier! We tried something different this year and had 2 days of camp and 1 day of trial. While we all admitted it wasn’t the best to have a trial so early in the year, we did agree that an early trial was better than no trial, and as the entire trial committee will be gone at the end of the summer, our usual trial time, an early trial was had! For all going to the American specialty, which is very much in our neck of the woods, this was a great warm up and certainly let everyone know where they are at and the direction they need to go to be successful in October in Oregon! Charles was pretty sure coming to the “north” that he was going to freeze but we kept him warm with both our hospitality and our weather, which actually surprised him and we did see him in shorts and a t-shirt! We appreciated all the help that we got from Charles before he even got here, that help I’m sure got many of us motivated to start practicing in the SNOW and ensured that when our
14
OCTOBER 2013
dogs got into the water they were prepared to translate their winter training to summer. It was wonderful to see the 2 junior dogs passing, as they are truly junior dogs, both just over 6 months old! The 2, Krispy and Lily, took to the water and showed their heritage as working water dogs! Our courier pass, Luna, was a nail biter, with Luna making Greg sweat it out on her net, as she swam circles before deciding that yes indeed she COULD do the exercise. All in all it was pretty exciting as they are our first team to get a courier leg here in Alberta! Hopefully Luna will be our next Alberta CWDX dog and will soon be doing Versatility at our trial! We had so many close fails, the dog and handler teams worked so hard! I didn’t envy Charles picking his spirit prize winner for the team that best exemplifies a special bond between dog and handler. There were several teams that worked hard and were a joy to watch but in the end Kate Polkovsky and Maya were the recipients of the award, which was well deserved for all their hard work. Thanks to the PWDCC Board for once again supporting our trial and helping us get organized in a very short period of time! Thanks to everyone for coming out and entering your dogs even when you weren’t sure they were ready, and thanks for all the hard work that everyone put in volunteering and making sure the trial ran smoothly. The 2013 Water Trial Committee: Andy Gamache (Co-Chair), Linda Propp (CoChair), Brenda Brown (Trial Secretary) and Greg Illchuk (Site Co-ordinator and set up). Special thanks to Sandy Busse for the help with the catalogue, schedule and general last minute “go-fer” duties! Thanks to all the teams who entered and competed, congratulations to the passes, noted in red.

Highlights of the PWDCC Board Minutes June 18, 2013, 8pm EST Present Sharon Lapstra, ON Mavis McClintock, BC Patti McDonald, ON Andy Gamache, Prairies Pat Vokes, ON Jennifer Byers, PQ Michelle Jackson, ON Guest: Roslyn Eskind, ON Absent Glenda Newton, PQ Kathy Dick, ON Motion Mavis moves to accept the Minutes of May 28th 2013 PWDCC meeting, seconded by Pat. Approved. Business arising from Minutes Facebook Table Laura Dolman presentation on Facebook Policy to next meeting. Board members should think of specific questions to ask, Laura, prior to next meeting. Concerns expressed by members included: Should we have an open or closed Facebook page controlled by an administrator? Facebook page should not be a place where ideas are posted that the club cannot control. What are the benefits to the club of having a page? Mavis mentioned that BC has a Facebook page open to the general public and it is very popular. People use the site to set up walking clubs, post pictures, post social events, and big wins in shows for example. Members feel in touch with each other, feel connected. Mavis suggested that it is important to monitor the site. Andy mentioned that Alberta has a Facebook page that open to members only. One club member administers the site and all members have the ID and password. Non-members cannot see what is posted on the site. Roslyn expressed concern that having an open forum may be a big task to administer. Laura Dolman will provide her perspective to the pros and cons of setting up a Facebook page. 2014 Specialty the show will be at Chilliwack. Mavis had no further news to report. She expects to have the budget prepared by the next monthly meeting.
New Business
July 23, 2013
Glenda Newton, PWDCC director has requested a leave of absence (LOA) from the board until October 2013. Sharon advised that there is no policy in place for LOA of board members. Andy stated that it is on rare occasion that members request LOA and this issue should be dealt with on a case by case review. Sharon stated that policy states if a board member misses more than two meetings they may be relieved of their duties as a board member. Sharon stated that we must be consistent as to how the policy is applied and managed. All board members agreed that it should be at the discretion of the President to determine whether a board member should be relieved of their duties.
Present Sharon Lapstra, ON Mavis McClintock, BC Patti McDonald, ON Andy Gamache, Prairies Jennifer Byers, PQ Michelle Jackson, ON Pat Vokes, ON Roslyn Eskind, ON, guest
Sharon to contact Kathy Dick to determine what Kathy’s role will be on the board. Alberta Water Trial Andy explained that it will be ˆ a three day event with the trial on the 3rd day. The event is limited to 35 teams per day. As of today there are 18 dogs registered. Entry fees are $50. The judge is Charles White. The event will be held at Wizard Lake on July 14th. Motion Pat motioned to accept the budget for the Alberta water trial and Jennifer seconded the motion. Approlved. Breeder Program Sharon and Debra will make program recommendations by early October. They asked for interested individuals to sit on the committee to discuss issues around health testing. Gillian and Jennifer will also sit on the committee. The decisions of the committee will be mentioned in the Waterlog and in an e-blast to the membership Ontario Water Trials Karen provided estimate for budget. Ontario is expecting 30 participants and hopes to make a profit greater than budgeted. Motion Patti made a motion to accept the budget and Andy seconded the motion. Approved. Other Business Pat is receiving questions from members and fielding calls from the general public. She wanted direction as to where to forward the inquiries as didn’t want to burden Sharon with a lot of calls. Sharon suggested that any calls regarding breeder contact should be referred to the breeder list on the website. If there were concerns with club or dog issues then Sharon would take the calls. Sharon stated that as per the Code of Ethics, board members are to be supportive and fair and that our role is to provide service to our membership and to the breed. We should not be promoting or marketing our kennels. All board members agreed.
Canadian Dogs Annual Ad Roslyn prepared a beautiful ad for the Dogs Annual publication. All board members agreed that the ad looks great.
Any complaints or questions from members regarding PWDCC policy can be directed to the officers contact page or email Sharon.
Regional Specialty nothing new to report. Committee members working on prizes, the judges are in place. Sharon and Roslyn will work on putting together a budget and have more to report at next monthly meeting.

Absent Glenda Newton, PQ Kathy Dick, ON Motion Michelle moves to accept the Minutes of June 18th 2013 PWDCC meeting, seconded by Jennifer. Approved. Business arising from Minutes Alberta Water Trial Andy explained that the Alberta region had a great water trial over two days. The weather was nice. Charles White provided great positive information. It was well attended with fifteen (15) dogs enrolled. The club broke even and maybe made a small profit. Andy will prepare and provide a statement for the next meeting. Andy will share photos and send them to Roslyn. Roslyn to send qualifying certificates. Andy requires one more ribbon. Facebook Table Laura Dolman presentation on Facebook Policy to next meeting as she was unable to attend this meeting. Laura Dolman will provide her perspective to the pros and cons of setting up a Facebook page. Meeting in August There are several members away on holidays therefore there will be no meeting in August. The next meeting will be Sept 3, 2013. Regional Specialty Roslyn explained that, Deb Graffmann, is confirmed as show chair. Income for booster is $4.00 per dog therefore will add more to the bottom line. The prizes to be used are national merchandise that was purchased for the last specialty. No one has paid for the hospitality event therefore it is a possibility that a cheese tray is purchased for a get together. The club will pay for the supplies. They are still determining the judges’ gift. Decorations are to be determined. Flowers for picture set up will be purchased. The entries are unknown to date. The show secretary will tell us the numbers and Roz will update the budget. Everyone is hoping for a good turnout. Motion The budget was reviewed and Sharon made a motion to accept the budget for the 2013 Regional Specialty. Pat seconded the motion. Canadian Dogs Annual Ad Roslyn sent out ad layout for the ad to be placed in the American Catalogue. The cost will be $130.00. Motion Sharon made a motion to approve placing the ad in the American Catalogue 5 ½” x 8 ½” full page. Andy seconded the motion. 2014 National Specialty Mavis was in contact with, Donna Cole (President of Lower Mainland Dog Club) to discuss the food problem as did not want to use the cook shack. Mavis is waiting for a reply. Mavis said that she does not want to spend a lot of money on the sweeps judge. Therefore, Mavis had two suggestions for judges. Sharon is comfortable with using either judge. Everyone agreed on Mavis’ judgement. Using a Canadian judge that is local to the area will save dollars. Mavis stated that the ribbons are made once registration is confirmed. She hasn’t received the panel judges list yet.

It money was deposited into the bank account. The two new boats were delivered to the storage facility. The old red boat is presently at Pats’ house. The approximate value of the red boat is $200.00. Sharon asked if we as a club use the red boat. Pat suggested that two boats are enough. The other two boats are brand new. It was suggested that we keep the red boat as a spare. Pat suggested sending out a message to the members to see if anyone would like to purchase the old boat. The boat has no trailer. Roy and Pat would deliver the boat. The email blast to members would include a picture of the boat, advising the members that it will sell for $200 and members who expressed interest in purchasing the boat would email Roz by August 5th. Their names would be put in a draw to be held at the Regional Specialty on August 10, 2013. Motion Sharon made the motion to offer the boat for sale via email blast to membership for $200.00. Cover Pup Hi I’m Stevie, As you can see, I love Frisbee’s. I have red ones, blue ones and purple ones, but the darn things keep getting away from me. If you happen to see any floating in the lake, or sleeping in the woods, ditches, or hiding in trees, I would be most appreciative if you drop them off at my home, FR 58 Lot 9. Thanks and good hunting. P.S. If you need any holes dug on your property, I’m good at that too! Stevie lives with Bella a fellow PWD, and Joanne and Vilnis Butkevics about 45 minutes east of Peterborough Ontario on Cordova Lake.
