ThePresident’sLetter Greetings to All and Happy New Year! 2013 has ushered in some changes on the Board of our national breed club. Herb and Mari Szauerzopf resigned as President and Rescue Co-ordinator, as well as Henri Berube, Ontario Director. On behalf of our membership, I would like to thank Herb, Mari and Henri for all of their hard work over the past years. The new Board slate is listed below with contact information. The new Executive has already started to get things rolling. Lots of new ideas are being put forth regarding how to increase our membership voice to the Board. Planning for the National Specialty in 2014 has begun, as well as planning for the 2013 water training and trial season. We are asking our membership across the country to actively support our rescue program by donating their time and resources in the event that a member of our beloved breed requires rescue services. More details about our new rescue model will follow in subsequent Waterlogs. Lorraine Wilson is our new Rescue Co-ordinator and we are grateful that Lorraine has agreed to take on this important responsibility.

Roslyn continues to design and co-ordinate the publication of the Waterlog. She will be joined by Mike Collins as the New Waterlog Editor in May, 2013 once he retires. Deirdre Hall has taken on the role of our Breeder Program Co-ordinator. Member breeders can send their litter postings to Deirdre with appropriate documentation. Her contact information is below. Thank you Cindy Berube for fulfilling this role over the years. I would like to thank our new Board members for their energy, enthusiasm and commitment to our wonderful breed. We welcome feedback and input from our membership about any issue that is of concern to you. We’ve created a group email to the board on the Officers Contact page. And, you can still email individually any officer, board member or program coordinator from this page. We’re looking for your ideas to improve the Waterlog content, to make it more relevant, so please let us know your thoughts. Here’s to a successful and productive 2013! THE NEW PWDCC BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS FOR 2013-2014 PWDCC Board President Sharon Lapstra St. Clements, Ontario Secretary Kathy Dick Bolton, Ontario Treasurer Pat Vokes Nobleton, Ontario Directors Jennifer Byers Montreal, Quebec Andy Gamache Morinville, Alberta Michelle Jackson Barrie, Ontario Mavis McClintock Duncan, British Columbia Glenda Newton Hudson Quebec

Jennifer Byers I am a part time nurse and passionate about my dogs. As a child I loved dogs and when I finally acquired my first dog, a Pointer my allergies forced me to place him, this was a very painful experience. In the early 90’s, I saw a picture of a Portuguese Water Dog on the cover of the Dogs Annual and discovered “a non-shedding hypo-allergic dog”. Further investigation lead me to Beverly Jorgensen of Sun Joy Kennel in Connecticut where I felt in love with

10 6

FEBRUARY 2013

Gracie (Sun Joy’s Goodness Gracious), my first Portuguese Water Dog. I did not realize this would be the beginning of an exciting adventure. Gracie’s first litter in the spring of 1996 produced seven puppies and as one of my favourite movies was an Italian classic called “Seven Beauties” the combination of both inspired the use of Sevenbeauty as my kennel name. In this first litter was George, (BIS Am Can Ch. Sevenbeauty George) my first show dog. At that time I met the handler Danik Dancause, and together with George, we formed an exciting team winning the first all breed Best In Show for a Canadian bred Portuguese Water Dog.

Kathy Dick I am married to Ken, we have two children, Samantha (5) and Stephen (16m), and two exceptional PWD’s both from the same breeder: Belouro Kennels, Poco (8) and Areia (5). My family’s history is Portuguese. I offer my love of dogs and the breed. I am able to relate to the majority of the club’s members as a pet owner, but I also have an interest in working and other sports. With the support of my family, our dogs have achieved the following: 2 Junior, 2 Apprentice, 2 CGN’s. Poco has a ribbon from the first Wet Dog Conformation Show and Areia has a bronze medal and 3 of 4 legs in Disc Dog, she is also an MBIS GCH.

I want to help all PWD owners, old and new, to be able to enjoy the benefits and knowledge that this organization has to offer.

Andy Gamache My wife and I received our first porty in 1999. Fraser was an improper coat and a great intro to the breed. We started agility as we needed a job for all the energy he had. We currently have three portys in our home. Calla is 12.5 years old and thinks she is still a puppy. She is always ready to go but not too early as she needs her sleep in time. Max, her son, is now 8. Max is the first Canadian born PWD to obtain the CKC AG.M. Ch title. He is a lot of fun to have on the agility course and we enjoy water work as well. Both Max and Calla over the last several years have been the number one or two top CKC agility dogs in Canada. Paws is Max’s daughter and is now 4. She is yet another level of energy and is truly a wonderful dog to have in our lives. I have been the president of the Alberta Portuguese Water Dog Club for the last 6 years. I have stepped down and am now just another club member. I am proud to have been a part in getting water trials in Alberta the last two years. Both have been a great success. I look forward to many more trials as we have a great group in Alberta.

Mavis McClintock

I am married, have two wonderful children and two amazing dogs. We have always been dog owners. We purchased our PWD last July 2012 from Ondulado PWDs Kennels. We researched the breed extensively and knew that the personality of this breed would fit into our active family lifestyle. The PWDs are an amazing breed and give so much love to everyone.

I bring a wide variety of life experience to the position which I feel would be beneficial to the club. I obtained an undergraduate degree in American and Canadian History in 1982 and went on to complete my Master’s degree in Social Work in 1985. In my professional life I was Executive Director of two notfor-profit agencies and conducted training, in addition to clinical responsibilities. I also managed an employee assistance program for a large corporation. I believe that my leadership experience in managing/developing/facilitating a board of directors and collaboration skills would be an asset to our club at this time. I became interested in the Portuguese Water Dog in 1999. We bought our first dog Maggie in 1999. Since then I have developed a successful breeding program under the kennel name Keeva Bay, which focuses on the betterment of the breed, in all aspects. I am very dedicated to these wonderful animals and support all activities that our dogs participate in. We have shown our dogs extensively in conformation, obedience and in 2013, will have three of our dogs working in the water program. About 6 years ago I developed an interest in the Schapendoe. I have been involved in getting our National breed club organized and currently sit on the Board of Directors as the Ontario representative. I am also a strong believer and supporter of mentoring, supporting one another and education. It is only through collaboration that we fulfill our goals to better our breed and to be the people that our dogs think we are!

Samador Portuguese Water Dogs (CKC Perm. Reg’d)

Over the past several years I have been an active member on boards of several charitable organizations. I hope to bring that experience to this club. I am interested in meeting people with similar interests in purebred dogs and responsible breeding practices, plus I am very interested in assisting with various club activities. We are presently working towards obtaining a Conformation Championship for our puppy with the assistance of Lorraine Wilson from Big Bay PWDs Four Paws Training.

PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

I was born and raised in Winnipeg and got my first show dog, a Samoyed, in 1969. Ch OTCh Fiala Regina was the first of many Samoyeds and Labradors who filled my home. Under the kennel name of Samador, which I registered in 1972, they were all extensively exhibited in Conformation and Obedience with many show champions and obedience titled dogs, including two UDs. In 1990, while living in the British Virgin Islands, I met and fell hopelessly in love with the Portuguese Water Dog and in 1992 Ch Neocles Lord Nelson CD came into my life. Nelson was one of the first PWDs in Canada to achieve a championship and obedience title and was the first of many PWDs and handful of Lowchens to share our home – all of which achieved conformation and obedience and/or water trial titles. I now breed only PWDs and have been fortunate to breed Best In Show, multipleBPIS, Specialty BOS and Puppy winners, many group and puppy group winners as well as agility, obedience and Water Trial winners. For more 40 years I have been dedicated to working in my Provincial and National breed clubs and I am proud of being the first PWD breeder/judge in Canada. My passion for dogs and the conformation ring is boundless and the opportunity to judge is a great joy. I am licensed for the entire working group and on permit for the first half of the non sporting breeds.

Glenda Newton

Pat Vokes

Member: CKC (since 1985), PWDCA & PWDCC.

It is my pleasure to serve as Treasurer of the PWDCC. My husband Roy and I have been members of the Club for 5 years and I welcome the opportunity to work on behalf of the members and support the Club and its various activities. I have 30+ years of banking and accounting experience which will be valuable in applying my skills in the position of Treasurer.

In 1983, Glenda spent the summer months looking after her sister’s litter of Chow puppies and by the age of 17 had whelped her own first litter of Chows under her sister’s kennel name Oban. By 19, she had the 4th top chow (Conformation) in Canada. In 1993 Glenda and her mother purchased a large boarding kennel on the outskirts of Montreal where she fell in love with Portuguese Water Dogs. Currently, Glenda owns 5 PWD’s. The first PWD to arrive was Phoebe (Dec 26, 1995 - 24 Feb. 2012) from Elaine Suter’s Hunter Kennel and the crew grew rather quickly! Fortunate enough to breed Phoebe to Sun Joy’s Master Plan, Glenda had one of the first brown Champions in Canada, and felt extremely privileged to own a male pup "Echo" out of Sun Joy’s last litter from Kae and Duke. Operating under the MacDuff Kennel name, the PWD’s are interwoven in the daily lives of her partner Robin Vosatka and her son Colin (12 yrs old), who works with the dogs in junior handling, conformation, dock diving and some agility. Glenda has 2 undergrad degrees, and is working on her MSc, she is currently on assignment as the Chief Civilian Personnel Officer for the United Nations in Brindisi, Italy.

FEBRUARY 2013

We became interested in the breed some years ago and brought Kelby into our household in June 2006. Our original intention was to have a great pet that would enjoy time at the cottage. This quickly changed when we attended a Club Fun Day which included an introduction to “Water Work”. We were so impressed by what the dogs and owners could achieve that we became immediately hooked. Since that day we have been very active in training and competing for the various water titles. In the off season we have Kelby involved in obedience training. We are proud to be members of both the PWDCC and PWDCA and have concentrated in the area of Water Trials and training. We are also members of the Great Lakes PWD Club and enjoy attending their trials held in Michigan. I look forward to working with the rest of the Board and meeting and working with all of the great members of our Club.

New Rescue Coordinator Lorraine Wilson Lorraine is the current chair of PWDCOntario and heads up the branch’s water work training program. Lorraine became involved in the breed 13 years ago when she was looking for a PWD as a pet. She purchased her first PWD – Hogan - from Cathie Sockett, Ondulado Portuguese Water Dogs. Lorraine became involved in obedience training and when she met Cathy Gadd, began training with Hogan, in the water. Lorraine’s first love was to do performance activities with her dog. In fact, Lorraine initially was not involved in conformation events, but strictly performance. After being encouraged by Cathie Sockett, Lorraine began to show Hogan, completing his Canadian Championship and campaigning him to #3 PWD in Canada. Breeding requests followed. Eight years ago Lorraine acquired her first breeding bitch Kyrie- from Julie Parker, Valkyrie PWD’s, Erie, Pennsylvania and established her kennel BigBay Reg’d. Lorraine has retired as a Human Resources professional and now focuses solely on training, pet services, show handling and breeding.

PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

Lorraine has served as the treasurer and membership co-ordinator and then became involved to get water trials approved in Canada. Lorraine states that her greatest accomplishment is her contribution to our water work program, she states that it is “her passion” and that our dogs have such a powerful instinct to perform in the water that they learn it very quickly. Her husband Andy and her children are all very proud of her accomplishments. Lorraine has a passion to not only work with her own dogs, but to coach others who want to learn how to compete both in and out of the water. Lorraine has a special appreciation for the intelligence and spunkiness of our wonderful breed and is looking forward to ensuring every PWD has the lifestyle and loving family they deserve through her role as rescue coordinator.

New Breeder Contact Deirdre Hall I grew up in Ottawa in a family which always had two or more dogs. My mother bred Dachshunds and exposed me to breeding at an early age. My husband and I got our first Water Dog in 1992 from Leona Ives (Aliana Reg.), we named her Fado. She was joined 9 months later with an Irish marked male named Patife and then a couple years later with our lovely brown boy Tigre who we had for over 17 years before he went to Rainbow Bridge last October. Our present family consists of six Water Dogs and two horses. In the early 1990’s I began to help Leona whelp her litters and spend weekends with her raising the puppies. This time served as an apprenticeship to learn more about this breed and how to raise happy and healthy puppies. When I retired from my profession as a Community Planner and Graphic Artist I began my own breeding kennel which I named after my first Water Dog ‘Fado’. I continue to strive to breed for the betterment of our beloved Water Dog. I hope, in some small way, to be of service to the PWDCC and its members by being the Breeder Contact.

Discovery of A New Early Onset Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in the Portuguese Water Dog PRA was first reported in the Portuguese Water Dog in 1990. In the PWD PRA is inherited and is transmitted as a simple recessive. What has occurred in PWDs up until recently is prcd-PRA (progressive rod-cone degeneration results in eventual blindness with a later onset). The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA) has supported the research work of Dr. Gustavo Aguirre and Dr. Greg Acland and their associates at the University of Pennsylvania. Their research has developed a DNA mutation gene test to identify dogs that are either normal, carriers or affected with prcd-PRA. The current test for prcd is available from OptiGen. Highlights of the PWDCC Board Minutes December 13, 2012, 8pm EST Present: Herb Szauerzopf, ON; Henri Berube, ON; Roslyn Eskind, ON; Mindy Selby, Prairies Absent: Glenda Newton, PQ; Lori Crandlemire, BC; Pat Vokes Guests: Ann Weiszmann, ON; Cindy Troke, Atlantic; Andy Gamache, Prairies (absent) Motion to accept the minutes of the November 1 PWDCC Board meeting. Approved. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report TD Canada Trust $11,485.88 PayPal $1,068.16 Members 1142 Puppy Members 89 Annual General Meeting Date is February 21, 2013. Pat Vokes will be contacted to ask about Financials preparation. The slate bios of the incoming board should be prepared. Ann Weiszmann will prepare and complete this. Roslyn reminded the board that all board members have a @pwdcc.org email that is linked to their regular email account and, each member can set up an outgoing address with this address also. Regional Specialty The numbers are 23 plus 7 (non regular classes and baby puppy) and 19 for the Booster. Once the rebate information is available from the Elora show committee, the budget can be finalized. There is $450.00 in sponsorship, although we didn’t prepare an official web site for sponsorship, people offered donations. At the National Specialty we had 55 regular entries. In the past at the Regional Specialty in July 2009 at Oxford KC in Ontario, we had 41 entries, in Chilliwack BC April 2, 2010 we had 52 including Sweepstakes (34/18). So this year not a bad number considering the time of the year. Breeder Program The board has spent 18 months discussing the Breeder Program, changing policy to give testing and reporting for breeding pairs more prominence. Herb was contacted on his recent November litter, co-bred with another board member and two other officers of the club. The sire was bred under 2 years of age with a current CERF and OFA prelim rating. OFA prelims are acceptable (refer to our revised Health testing recommendations on the club web site). Other testing was not done, in contravention of club policy. It was later explained that DNA testing on the dam of the sire was in process to apply for a CHIC rating for her, and subsequently ‘testing by parentage’ for the sire of the litter, also an acceptable PWDCC practice. However, the testing was not in place when the breeding and whelping of this litter occurred, and there is a second litter with a litter brother in the same circumstances. Issue raised for discussion: If the leadership of the club doesn’t see value in following the club policy, it damages the reputation of the club and undermines our breeding recommendations and Breeder program. Why should any other breeder follow the policy? Brought forward as a response was that a change was made to the Breeder Report form without board approval. The change was to report a litter to the Breeder Contact ‘when the bitch was pregnant’. It was explained that the change was made in response to the new regulations in place for 2012. With the new 2012 policy, the Breeder Contact would have to do considerably more work, as every litter bred by breeders on the list would have to have health testing verified, not just those where a litter due listing was requested. 14

FEBRUARY 2013

The Breeder Contact asked to have the ‘Litter Due’ listing form amended to a ‘Breeder Report’ form to reflect the new policy. The ‘Breeder Report’ form had been presented to the board at the April board meeting, and was distributed to the Breeder Contact and the board in advance of the meeting with the changed text pulled out and shown in the body of the email. There was no discussion or questions. The form was approved at the April 2012 meeting. (Subsequent to the December 2012 meeting, the original email and further relevant correspondence was distributed to the board for review.) It was suggested that this change was made for personal reasons to list a litter. However, it was pointed out that this breeder had all appropriate documentation (full individual testing and CHIC ratings prior to the breeding. Certificates were available in compliance with PWDCC recommendations). In rebuttal to the original discussion re the untested stud dog, it was stated that this was an ‘in-house breeding’ with the stud dog ‘clear by parentage’ and hips rated preliminary excellent, with a current CERF. The president polled the board for an immediate solution. The board was asked if it felt that there was some damage done, would the board consider this a problem, or is this issue completely specious with no grounding? What would the board think if another breeder had done this? The president asked would a resignation fix the problem and offered to resign immediately and withdraw from the club if it was felt that the reputation of the PWDCC had been damaged. Another question was asked: Was this breeding done in accordance with club policy in place at the time of the breeding? The president was not on the breeder list when this breeding took place. No one requested a resignation. A request was made for further discussion as this issue was brought before the board. Henri Berube: In June I offered to resign when I discovered someone had gone in and made some changes to the ‘Breeder Report’ form without consulting the board. I offered my resignation at that time, but was assured that this issue would be resolved. Secondly, when a motion is tendered it becomes the motion of the board, if anyone had issue with the suggested changes to the Breeder Policy changes, they should have spoken up before voting. I find it hard to work when rules are changed without discussion. I don’t have confidence in the board and don’t have time to go back to review the minutes of the April meeting. It was reiterated that the ‘Breeder Report’ form was sent to the board in advance of the April meeting. Henri further stated: Odd you’re bringing this up now as you’re stepping down, I think this discussion is inappropriate. I have done nothing but volunteer for this club, I represent this breed passionately. If you want me to resign I will be gone. It was suggested that the board review the April meeting transcript and recording to see what it says. It was pointed out that the litter was born in November, and that it is a current issue. Herb: I officially resign and Mari also gives her resignation as Rescue Coordinator. Herb leaves the meeting. Henri: I resign also, goodnight. Henri leaves the meeting. As the board no longer had a quorum, the official meeting was ended at 8:37pm EST

Note: Subsequent to this meeting, it was acknowledged that the accusation of inappropriate changes to the ‘Breeder Report’ form was found to be without merit by Henri and Herb. Henri requested to submit a written apology: “Please accept my sincere apologies for my part in the discussion surrounding this issue. I had no recollection of this and in speaking with others no one else had mentioned this as well. I stand corrected.”

Alberta Water Trial There are a few outstanding issues with the statement and expenses. Waiting to hear back from the trial chair. 2013 Membership forms Approval deferred until the new board meets. Transitioning club files and merchandise Pat will contact outgoing board members and officers to retrieve records and club property. New boat for Ontario The boat purchase is going ahead, Roy Vokes has sent an expense report, see attached, to equip the boat. Members will be canvassed to see if someone is willing to store the boats nearby the Laurel Creek training location. Roy Vokes will purchase the single boat trailer and the blue boat will be sold later in the season to defray purchase costs of the new boat. Next meeting scheduled for Wed. January 23rd with new prospective board members invited to attend. Lori Crandlemire has resigned from the board, ceding her position to a more experienced volunteer from British Columbia. Roslyn thanked Lori for her service on the board and wished her continued success. Motion to adjourn made by Roslyn, seconded by Pat. Approved.
