Our thanks to PWDCA member, Penny Wetmore from Belle Plaine Minnesota, who shared her candid photography of the PWDCA Specialty with us.

Time to renew your PWDCC membership for 2013. To renew log onto pwdcc.org home page and click the membership button. If your information hasn’t changed, just sign your name on the form and enclose your cheque. Or, enter your VISA or Mastercard information on the form, or use the PayPal option. Just remember if you use PayPal please fill in a form and send it to Pat Vokes. Mail your form to Pat Vokes, PWDCC Treasurer, 24 Kinsley Street, Nobleton ON L0G 1N0, 905.859.6452 or contact her at pat@pwdcc.org

Breeders Time to renew your Breeder Program participation. This program supports PWDCC Rescue and gives you the opportunity to promote your ethical breeding practises, a win-win for PWDs! The forms are on www.pwdcc.org from the home page click the membership button. Please refer to the new board policy following.

From the Board To all PWDCC Breeders and those who currently participate in the Breeder Program on the PWDCC web site For 2013 the Breeder Program will revert to 2011 Policy: The PWDCC Breeder Program was developed to support PWDCC Rescue to cover the expenses of assessing and re-homing PWDs. Our Member Code of Ethics requires all member breeders to assume life-long responsibility for re-homing all puppies they produce should this be necessary. But, as the PWDCC is often faced with non-member breeders who don’t take responsibility for their dogs, PWDCC Rescue steps in to re-home these dogs. To qualifiy for this program, breeders must be members of the PWDCC for at least one year before being eligible to be on the Breeders’ List. (Updated March 18, 2010). Member breeders can support Rescue by signing on to the Program and additionally have the benefit of being listed on the award-winning PWDCC web site. At the beginning of each fiscal/calendar year, the breeder submits his/her application, the application is posted on the club site and mailed with membership applications in October: • a $100.00 contribution per year secures a breeder listing on the PWDCC site in the NEW PUPPY/BREEDER CONTACT section.

NOVEMBER 2012

• There is an additional $50.00 charge for a web site link should you require this. The web site listing is updated January 31st of each year with renewed participants. (Updated January 16, 2011.) Litter Due Listing Each breeder participating in a fiscal year can list all or any litters due by sending a completed Litter Due form with all the supporting health documents currently required by the PWDCC or, check the PWD Health & Litter Database box if your dog is listed. It is recommended that all breeding dogs and each litter is registered with the PWD Health and Litter Database. All Health and Litter information is now accepted through the PWD Health and Litter Database, online through the PWDCA web site. When a bitch is owned by two or more breeders, all breeders have to be members of the PWDCC in good standing and all breeders have to be participants of the PWDCC Breeder Program and be individually listed on the PWDCC web site. The Breeder Contact coordinator activates the LITTER DUE ENTRY. It is requested that all breeders notify the coordinator when their litter is sold. At that time the listing is removed. Participation in the Breeder Program does not confer endorsement by the PWDCC of any kennel, its breeding program or practices.

ThePresident’sLetter Greeting all, Another year is nearly done and looking back, we’ve enjoyed lots of activity in the Portuguese Water Dog community. We have hosted many successful events. In Water Work, three successful Water trials were held in Ontario and Alberta, and they were larger than ever. Our National Specialty show was well planned in a core part of the country, however, like dogs shows everwhere, attendance was smaller than anticipated. Even so, we were the largest breed entry at the Kilbride show and the largest Specialty. For 2013, our executive is changing. Board member Judy Cheguis has resigned, and Roslyn Eskind, a long time anchor of the executive, Secretary/Treasurer has also resigned. Vice President Mindy Selby has completed her six year term as per our policies. All will be missed and we thank each of them for their contribution to the running of your club.

Your executive for 2013 will be, from west to east, Lori Crandlemire, British Columbia; Andy Gamache, Prairies; Secretary Ann Weiszmann, Ontario; Treasurer Pat Vokes, Ontario; President Herb Szauerzopf, Ontario; Harry Berube, Ontario; Glenda Newton, Quebec; and Cindy Troke, Atlantic. We look to our members to welcome the new executive and help them make the PWDCC a more successful organization. Finally after several years of hard work and service, Sharon Lapstra our Waterlog editor, has given her resignation. Thank you for all you hard work. We are seeking an editor and person(s) to assist, write/edit articles, and take pictures of events. Roslyn will continue to design and produce the Waterlog, so please contact her if you are interested in taking on the editor’s role. Hope everyone enjoys their holiday season, Herb

The PWDCC members who participated in the 2012 PWDCA National Specialty should be very proud of the quality of our dogs and our outstanding results achieved. As a small country, in comparison to the United States, our achievements reflect the dedication of our members to this wonderful breed. Special congratulations to Tammy Hibberson for winning Superdog! (see page 12 for more.) Thank you for making us proud! Great job! Sharon Lapstra and Roslyn Eskind Waterlog Editor and Designer

Riglee

After being second for two years running in the 2010 and 2011 Superdog competitions, Riglee proves there’s truth to the adage “third time lucky”. For the past three years Riglee has competed in Superdog at the PWDCA National Specialty. Each year she has earned eighteen Superdog points. In 2010 and 2011, eighteen points was second place but in 2012 it was a mere half point ahead of the second place dog and enough for Riglee to earn the PWDCA National Specialty’s Superdog title from a talented field of enthusiastic Superdog contenders. Superdog is a versatility award honoring the Portuguese Water Dog who accumulates the most points based on a formula which encourages handlers to participate in a variety of events at a National Specialty. Each dog can earn points for qualifying scores, class placements, breed wins or High in Trial and High Combined scores at all levels in water, tracking, agility, obedience, rally and conformation. This year the rules for point accumulation were revised to include an additional one point for any dog and handler teams competing together in conformation and at least three other Superdog venues.

Besides providing highlights and disappointments throughout the week for both dog and handler, all this resulted in 3 new AKC titles for Riglee and the honour of becoming 2012 Superdog. Highlights of the PWDCC Board Minutes September 20, 2012, 8pm EST Present: Herb Szauerzopf, ON; Roslyn Eskind, ON; Mindy Selby, Prairies; Lori Crandlemire, BC; Henri Berube, ON Absent: Glenda Newton, PQ Motion to accept the minutes of the August 16th meeting by Mindy, seconded by Lori. Approved. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report TD Canada Trust $12,423.84 PayPal $2,075.44 Membership 134 Puppy Membership 68 Old Business Breeder Program Survey No one is following the program with the changes for 2012. Recently a breeder has been approached twice to send in health data on the sire and dam and for puppy pkgs and not complied. Should we do the survey, and look for suggestions of people not complying with the current regulations? Should we mothball the current list until we do the survey? Should we remove people who are not complying? This list was started to fund Rescue, do we need funding or are there sufficient funds? Suggest we revert to old Policy for 2011 and split revenue with Rescue and PWDCC. Effective October 1st, the PWDCC Breeder Program will revert to 2011 Regulations. And we need to clarify that dogs used with frozen semen should have testing current with regulations at the time of collection. An Alberta breeder left the list over the issue of mandatory participation in the Puppy Program, is this program contributing to membership retention and revenue? We retain about 7% which is not significant to our membership but it is a decent retention statistically. This program helps the breeder with support to puppy people. Two litters of 10 costs a breeder $550.00 a year is this perceived as good value? That is on $40,000 income, and the cost can be passed on to the new owners. Mindy leaves the meeting. Motion by Herb that the Breeder program reverts to 2011 regulations, with revenue split between with the PWDCC and Rescue in 2013. Add to the web site header: We recommend the following health tests (listing them) and you should check with your breeder to ascertain if his/her dogs are health tested, seconded by Roslyn. Approved. Discussion: adding CERF for puppies should be referenced in our Health Testing Policy elsewhere, with an explanation of the re-emergence of Microphthalmia. Herb will write about the importance of checking puppies’ eyes for the web site. Motion by Herb that the PWDCC recommends that all puppies be CERF’d before delivery to the purchaser, seconded by Henri. Approved. Motion by Herb that the PWDCC recognizes CHIC certification for health testing verification, seconded by Henri. Approved. Through DNA testing of offspring, for one generation you can clear offspring for their testing. Specialty Report Trophies left over from the Specialty, will be offered to be used for the December Regional Specialty. Specialty reconciliation shows a loss of $xxxxx. The issue is entry numbers, we were the largest entry, however, less than 2006 numbers. Kilbride wants us

back next year. Perhaps do less, just do one hospitality event. The Welcome party food was excellent, we made money on that, there were 11/12 people who came to the Banquet who didn’t come to the Party. Kilbride did not follow through and pay us for the tent as they had promised. Roslyn Eskind has notified Herb that she will resign as Director/Secretary/Treasurer effective immediately, but will stay on to effect a smooth transition to the new officers through to the end of the year. Mindy Selby’s board term ended in March, she has been on the board 6 years. She cannot stay on the board. Nominating committee headed by the President. Henri and Lori are willing to stay on. Herb will contact Glenda. We need Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, Maritimes, and two officers VP and Secretary/Treasurer. The nominating committee is one board member and two members at large. Herb will seek these members. Henri will ask Cindy if she’ll stay on as Breeder Contact for 2013 under the reverted policy. Henri: given the hard work that Roz has put into the club, you have given so much for so long, I have a profound respect for the amount of work you have done for the club, it wouldn’t be fair to ask you to stay. Herb: you will be badly missed and hard to replace even with two people. Dogs in Canada AnnualShowcase Ad Cost is $950.00, 15% discount (March 2011), contact is Paul Madeiros. Our advertorial ad has become the standard for other clubs. Herb moves we again put in the ad, Henri seconds. Approved. The image was of Coco. Can we change it? How do we decide? Herb will send request. Roslyn will circulate both the advertorial and the 1/2 page ad we ran in the previous annual. Regional Specialty Doug Windsor, Elora show chair, email questions re: trophies, ribbons, sweepstakes, junior handling. Sweepstakes was decided earlier, we won’t have it. Let’s just offer a prize to the highest scoring junior handled PWD on the Specialty day. Timing for event, should have about 25 dogs, one hour of judging. 11 am and then have a luncheon at 12:30. Or have it at 1pm and then have luncheon. Are we doing a pot luck or use the facility caterers? Herb will contact Doug Windsor and the caterers. Herb will order ribbons from MJN, sizing down from the National Specialty categories. Breeder Seminar Herb has been requested to give a seminar to a judges’ group in October. Herb has been to two presentations, one live and one webinar. The club doesn’t own a crystal projector, however, we do have our Powerpoint presentation. Henri can probably get a projector. Irene Latchford is the contact. The seminar needs updating with better quality photographs, national specialty winners, and PWD Facebook pages with historical images and more complexity on content. The board should approve all changes and the text in the presentation should remain essentially the standard, the verbal and hands-on presentation can be more in-depth. The PWDCA Illustrated Standard is now being circulated, and perhaps we can consider asking to use it once it’s approved by that club to update our seminar. Roslyn will send Herb the current seminar, with a copy of the judges’ certificate and judges’ questionnaire. We seem to have a request once every 2 years. Motion by Henri that Herb be authorized to give the Judges’ Seminar to the group who approached him, to be presented in November (Herb to supply the details of group and date), seconded by Roslyn. Approved.

New Business Rescue Issue Mari Szauerzopf, PWDCC Rescue Coordinator, joined the meeting and reported: This September a PWD owner who had behaviour issues with her dog born March 2005, bred by a PWDCC breeder, contacted Mari Szauerzopf. Mari had conversations with both the owner and the breeder. Mari advised the owner to contact her breeder and the owner did. The owner asked for help with either taking back the dog, or with other advice. “if you’re not able to take back the dog, we have to explore other options”. After the owner let the breeder know she had spoken with PWDCC Rescue, the breeder suggested the owner send the dog back to her for assessment, and the owner asked how to do this, how is the dog assessed, and can the dog be re-homed if possible. The owner send several emails asking about details and got no further replies from the breeder. The owner eventually euthanized the dog as she felt the breeder wasn’t responding and that it would be preferable and more humane to put the dog to sleep with his family by his side. The owner then requested that Mari ‘take this issue to where it needs to go’ as the owner felt the breeder was irresponsible in not following through with her. The breeder said she didn’t receive the owner’s later emails. It would appear that the breeder may have violated our Code of Ethics re assuming life-long responsibility for dogs bred. The breeder could have been more proactive in getting the dog back, more supportive emotionally, and involved in speaking with her vet, arrange for a behaviorist, etc. to help determine if truly euthanization was the only course for this dog. For us to act we need a written complaint by a member against a member. The board can then convene a hearing. Herb reviewed the terms of a board hearing. Herb will coordinate obtaining a written statement from the owner. Next meeting Thursday October 11th 8pm EST. Motion to adjourn by Henri, seconded by Lori. Approved.

November 1, 2012, 8pm EST Present: Herb Szauerzopf, Ontario; Henri Berube, Ontario, Glenda Newton, PQ; Roslyn Eskind, Ontario; Lori Crandlemire, BC Absent: Mindy Selby, Prairies Secretary/Treasurer’s Report TD Canada Trust $12,079.05 PayPal $360.72 Members 138 Puppy Members 82 Motion to accept minutes of the September 20th meeting, moved by Lori, seconded by Glenda. Approved. Old Business Breeder Survey As we have changed the Policy back to the 2011 rules, is there now a need for the survey? Or proceed to try to determine the resistance and lack of compliance? Will we get honest information or participation? Breeders who didn’t comply why would they respond? Often Breeders hate the paperwork attached to all aspects of registering, etc. Perhaps we can learn an easier method of reporting. One issue is co-bred bitches that are owned by Americans and having the requirement that both co-breeders join the PWDCC and the list. How can we change policy without data to support our changes. The survey could consist of each line of the policy

NOVEMBER 2012 13

with agree/disagree and why. If the data leads us to the lowest common denominator, perhaps the club shouldn’t have a Breeder/Puppy list. Henri is disappointed at the lack of participation, and breeders not doing ‘what is best for the breed’. There was ample opportunity to contact us with concerns. No one contacted us. The list is effective at supplying leads. We are providing a service to breeders. If we don’t do a survey, where do we go? Henri led the charge to upgrade requirements for participation on the Breeder list. With the backing off of the new Policy we decided to give it a moratorium for a year, and emphasize that the list is a paid advertising. Herb, will quit the club before he has to police breeders, felt from the beginning that it wouldn’t work. Henri had faith in mankind that they would participate. We ran the risk of damaging the club and we don’t have enough members to do that. A primary purpose of the club is education for breeders and for new puppy owners who go to the web site for information. Can we have a check list of testing required before breeding that is printable? Now at the top of the list is a disclaimer and there is a link to our health page, that could be printed out. Are we having reports with health issues coming up after purchase? Would a brand new person actually read and understand the meaning of the disclaimer. We will make the text bold and list the 6 tests to be done. If a breeder knowingly breeds dogs without testing and the resulting pups will develop preventable conditions that is an ethical problem. The new 2013 membership forms sent to you shows on the Breeder Form that the Policy has reverted to 2011 policy and with the contact info of the new treasurer. The forms should be approved by the board. Herb may have sourced a new Secretary, she will let him know if she feels she can take this on. Regional Specialty Buffet prepared by the caterers at Bingemans would cost $32.95 including tax/gratuity, 2 meats, vegetable, coffee and dessert. Herb could sample the menu as he is 1/2 hour away. Perhaps it is rather expensive for a lunch at that time of year. Let’s organize a pot luck, we have traditionally had fabulous foods when we’ve done this, suggested schedule is Specialty at 10, Booster at 12, pot luck after. The potluck dinner will be added to the Sept. Waterlog. We will order ribbons from MJN, classes include Stud dog, Brood bitch, Baby puppy, High Junior Handler from Elora classes, Veterans. Judges’ Seminar We have a Judges’ handout that goes with the Judges’ Seminar, it is 32 pages printed two sides, with 2 slides per page and the opposite page is lined for notes. We also provide a certificate for Judges (proof of attendance required by the CKC) and a questionnaire. The breed standard comparison is $2.25 each, and the handout is $10.00-11.00 plus HST. Does the club want to provide this package? This is helpful as they can make their own notes, sending a PDF before or after an event. We can see how it is received this time and make a decision after this presentation. 25 copies will be printed. And after this event we need to update photos with historically significant dogs. Also after the presentation tomorrow, ask who would like to receive a PDF, this might be useful for future reference. Both delivery systems might be good. Henri is providing a projector, and bought a cable needed to connect the projector to the computer running the presentation.

New directors will be invited to the December meeting, Pat Vokes, Andy Gamache, an new secretary and NL director. Alberta Water Trial We have no documentation, entry funds for the trial, etc. It was mailed last week, the trial was held the September long weekend. AGM Should an announcement go out to the membership? Yes let’s proceed with the announcement hosted by the same conferencing survey. February 21st will be the date. Next meeting scheduled for December 13th 8pm EST. Motion to adjourn moved by Henri, seconded by Roslyn. Approved.
