As such, these attachments are very strong and very real for kids, making it especially difficult and at times, devastating when the dog dies. Most adults have difficulty with death and often, we are at a loss on how to help our kids. Here are some simple tips that might help: • Remember that a

express fears regarding death. Sometimes younger children appear to be unaffected by the death. Don’t assume that they are “ok with it” and replace the the loss quickly with another pet. Replacing the loss prevents a child from grieving normally. It takes time to heal and come to terms with the loss and what death is. • Do encourage talking. Explain what death is. Be honest about what happened. “Maggie died because she was sick or because she was hit by a car”. Also explain that Maggie won’t be coming back because she died. The loss of a pet is often the first experience that children have with death so it is important to be honest about the event. • Answer all questions about death honestly and try to give examples from nature that children might understand. • Normalize the feeling of sadness. Say the words: “Mom

• Take time to talk about the dog. Talk about how you miss the dog. “I remember when Maggie…” is often good modelling for kids who are struggling with their loss. It helps children to learn that death is a part of life and if they learn to cope in a healthy way they can begin to see that the grieving process can be an opportunity to celebrate the love and friendship they shared with a very special friend. • Recognize when a child is having difficulty or their grief process is complicated. Children who have experienced previous losses in their lives that are unresolved or complicated may need assistance. Seek professional assistance if your child seems very preoccupied or has changes in mood or behaviour that persists for a long time. There are many age appropriate resources and books available for children who are trying to cope and understand the loss of

The cost is $225.00 for trophy, discounted kindly be Annette who would normally charge in the range of $350 for a custom piece. The trophy will be picked up by Jen McMechan at the water trial at Travers City the week before our trials. This will be a surprise for Catherine and will be presented on Saturday, either Herb if he can will be there, or Roslyn and Lorraine will speak. Alberta Water Trial Premium is on the web site and email blasts out to members Translation of the web site, no progress to report, Glenda and Karine have not gotten together yet. This is a long term project. When we get requests we direct inquiries to the breed club’s web site and listed breeders, and if the breeders they are talking to aren’t, ask why? The CKC is just a registering body, the breed clubs are specifically interested in the welfare of the breed. Email motions: 1. Moved by Mindy, seconded by Herb. Approved I move that we proceed with the expenditure of $250 to increase our insurance to insure the value of Water Trial equipment (boats, trailers and oars) currently in Ontario and Alberta. 2. Moved by Roslyn, seconded by Mindy. Approved A request for a capital expenditure to add to the PWDCOntario Water Trial equipment supplied by PWDCC. National Specialty CKC paper work is in the works, judges are secured New Business Rescue in British Columbia Payment was mailed from Val Berry to us, cheque has not arrived and is being reissued. Dog was homed into the U.S. Expenses for this dog: transportation and vetting (done at cost by Val’s Vet) $375.00, additional transportation $86.00. This was a breeding male purchased and then sent to a Labradoodle breeder who deemed him ‘too much’, originally bred by Sharmink. Val Berry was contacted and stepped in, re-homed the dog, he was transported 6 hours across BC. Val assessed the dog, had it neutered, vetted, vaccines and wormed. The dog is about 5. Val did a lot of work to settle this dog. He is a nice dog, he was running on the Labradoodle breeders property. A success story, and it seems the dog wasn’t bred by the Labradooble breeder, which is thankful. Glenda mentioned she has a list of people looking for older dogs.

er does not have a female ‘pet quality’ puppy for placement.”. There were thoughts that the Buyer should have been notified earlier. However, there were extenuating circumstances, the timeline for the Breeder to do her temperament and structure assessments were delayed due to a health issue and the puppies were scheduled for pick up that day and the days following. Additionally, the Buyer was offered a puppy from the Breeder’s next litter due in October and/or a referral to a Breeder with pups available. Should the club be dealing with this? Concern that this is a 3rd party complaint and we can only deal with this if the aggrieved person personally contacts the board with a complaint. We will respond to the 3rd party advising her of this.

Motion to adjourn made by Roslyn seconded by Mindy. Approved.

New Business Complaint Against a Member Breeder A Golden Retriever breeder sent an email to Herb complaining that her niece didn’t receive a pup when she went to pick it up from a PWD member breeder. Herb replied to this person that the board will determine if this is something we should deal with. Board discussion: Our Code of Ethics specifies “be fair, open and honest in conducting business and advertise honestly in a manner that is in no way misleading or fraudulent.” The breeder’s pre-sales contract that was in effect states “The breeder reserves the right not to place a puppy with the Buyers for the following reasons: 2. We then set up a schedule of regular meeting and determine responsibilities, and report to the board. There are opportunities for people not in the immediate area to participate by email and conference call. Include request for volunteers in the next Waterlog. Wet Dog Judge Board selection of the judge is pending. Questions were for recommendation criteria included using a judge from the all breed show or is a CKC judge not appropriate as this is an unofficial, fun class? Should we recommend a breeder, as we have in the past, the last judge was Victoria Robinson, and before that Mavis McClintock judged. It was decided to take this discussion offline and make suggestions for the next meeting. Judges’ Educational Seminar Could this be done as an educational event at the Specialty? A pdf of the presentation was sent to all board members. Discussed that is might be too ambitious to run this seminar at the Specialty given the time constraints. Steve Dainard has asked the club to participate in a webinar for judges. If a web cam is available, actual dogs could be presented. Danik Dancause has delivered this in the past, Danik is still willing to do this if the board wishes him to continue. Board members expressed interest in learning to present the seminar. Suggested certification process involves: • observe the seminar as given by Danik • have Danik coach the new presenters • then have the new presenters present the seminar to board members Board members can log on to observe and learn at the webinar. Herb and Karine are interested in learning to present. The Powerpoint presentation is in English, but in Quebec it’s not unusual for a presentation in French to have unilingual English

support graphics. Using the CKC French standard we could prepare a French version of the presentation. Motion to participate in Steve Dainard Judges’ Education webinar and to contact Danik Dancause to present at this event and to have board members at the event to train by Roslyn, seconded by Karine. Approved.

New Business Complaint against breeder member The person involved will not contact the board and the complaint is now dropped. National Specialty New venue at Kilbride District in Milton ON, August 10-12 as the Oxford KC has dissolved. Our selected Specialty judge is available for our show and will be added to the All Breed panel.

It was clarified that the Powerpont presentation is owned by the club, we retain all rights to our presentation and it is not to reproduced or used without PWDCC permission. Usage rights are for one time use only.

Sweepstakes Judge is not available for this date. We still need to vote on the Wet Dog judge.

Motion by Roslyn to participate in webinar with board members as trainee presenters online, seconded by Henri. Approved.

The Wet Dog Competition Class is unofficial and we should not include AKC/CKC qualified judges.

Motion to approve events for the Specialty made by Henri, seconded by Glenda. Approved. Karine brought up Quebec pet/breeder shows, where breeders have booths and she is concerned that the representation is not correct. In Quebec there is one show I’m concerned about, dogs are not shown, not health tested, etc. Can we have something about the club? There are two, in the fall and in the spring in Quebec. Can we find reputable breeders to go to these shows? Can we have a handout with the standard and other information on the PWD? It is important that we recommend members of the club who adhere to our health testing policy. Because of the popularity of the breed, in Quebec, when they see these poor specimens they think that is a proper PWD. At Montreal, there is an all breed show incorporated into a pet show. Glenda volunteers to man a booth 9-5 for 3 days. In response it was explained that the PWDCC used to attend this type of show, and individual breeders had booths also. When we did participate in these shows we found member breeders who manned the booths were selling and promoting their own breeding. Also, it is onerous to man a booth for these weekends. Are these shows done in cooperation with the CKC? If so, we can ask for notice so that we can advertise the club by way of sending them to our web site. We have a policy to place ads when objectionable breeders are advertising. We will ad this to the agenda. Next meeting, Thursday October 13th. Motion to adjourn by Henri, seconded by Roslyn. Approved. Minutes of the PWDCC Board Meeting

We have a list of suggested names for both and we can add new names now if we desire.

We should try to find PWD breeders for this class. Other suggestions were added to our list. An email vote will be undertaken. Voting is ranked 7-1 highest preference to lowest preference for Sweeps and 5-1 for Wet Dog. Judges’ Education Seminar September 29th, 8pm date is good for Danik and board members who want to attend. Quebec Breeders’ show and booth A list of Quebec members will be sent to Karine and Glenda. Health tests are being done, but not showing the dogs to Championship. The Code of Ethics doesn’t specify conformation championship as a criteria for breeding, but it does specify assessing the quality of the dog. Perhaps we should have an ad in the catalogue for the show. We could modify the Introductory Puppy Offer to a general audience with the CKC standard and provide it in English and French. The show is very well attended by general public and a handout directing people to the club website and to reputable breeders for the spring show would be great. Motion to prepare a bilingual club handout based on our Introductory Puppy Offer and including the breed standard made by Roslyn, seconded by Glenda. Approved. Next meeting November 17th. Mindy will be absent. Motion to adjourn by Mindy, seconded by Karine. Approved.

maneuverable as our red boat. The suggested Canadian Tire boats (12’ Jon boats $699.00) sit very low in the water. The weight spec calls for 510lb., so 2 large men would almost sink it. It is good as a practice boat but perhaps not best for a water trial. Motion by Roslyn to ask Roy to measure the red boat to determine optimum proportions and to ask the Water Trial Committee to research appropriate water trial boats for purchase. The club will purchase at least one new boat, perhaps two and sell the blue boat and the single boat trailer to offset the expenditures. Seconded by Henri. Approved. Superdog for our Specialty Herb has initiated exploring holding a version of Superdog at our Specialty. However, the Specialty Committee is finding scheduling all activities a problem on a 3-day weekend. Obedience and the Specialty are held on Saturday. Agility is a problem re scheduling and also the PWDCC is no longer sanctioned to hold a trial. We would need to have an Agility sanction match to qualify. We would have to have an outside secretary to run the trial for us and it would have to be held on Sunday and that would be after the Specialty banquet, so couldn’t be featured and celebrated properly. The PWDCA event requires participation in 4 of 6 events. Our version would be restricted to 3 disciplines: conformation, obedience and water. How many people would possibly participate, probably 8-10 teams. Glenda volunteers to explore running a sanction match in her area with two local clubs. Henri moves to abandon this idea for this Specialty, seconded by Herb. Approved. Perhaps we could look at holding our next Specialty on a holiday weekend to get an extra day. Herb asks has Pam Schleuter-Heenen of Bayport, formerly Drydocks PWDS applied for membership recently? She has been denied membership due to her not taking responsibility for re-homing her dogs when notified by PWDCC Rescue. She was last a member in 2006. Is there a place to record those members who have been denied club membership, and who else has been denied membership? One former member had an issue with the CKC and she withdrew her application, Val Berry, Angie Potter have outstanding balances with the club. Should we have a list of these people for future boards. Is there a way of withholding participation in the Specialty or other club events from people who haven’t cleared their debts? You don’t have to be a member of the club to participate in CKC events, but if they are in debt to the club, we can withhold participation. This is a civil matter, not fraud unless you can provie intent and repeated actions. How many reminders were sent? Not really documented. Bounced checks have been made good, just a few outstanding. The board goes in camera for discussion and emerged to discuss: New Business OVC is no longer evaluating hips effective October 31, 2011. Our web site will be amended to reflect this change. OVC hips evaluated before and graded will be accepted. This changes our policy, as accepting OVC we could breed a dog at 18 months in line with OVC policy. PennHIP is an optional evaluation criteria, so OFA is our only official evaluation for hips and elbows going forward. The breeder litter due form, club web site and Policy and Procedure manual must be updated with new health policy. PennHIP: the board will review the article in the Courier on PennHIP and discuss at the next meeting.Next meeting December 8, 2011, 8pm EST. Motion to adjourn made by Henri seconded by Karine. Approved.

EARLY DETECTION OF CANINE CANCER Dog owners can be instrumental in the early detection of canine cancer. Unfortunately, regardless of the breed, your dog is vulnerable to a wide variety of cancers. An open sore that refuses to heal; an unusual lump or swollen area that doesn’t go away; mysterious bleeding from the mouth or anus; troubled breathing; difficulty in urinating or defecating; uncharacteristic lethargy; reluctance to exercise; sudden weight lossthese are among the indications that your dog may be harbouring a potentially deadly malignancy. Veterinarians are well aware of these signs and experts in the field of veterinary oncology have made great progress in the past several decades in diagnosing and treating canine cancer. Just as important, if not more so, is the progress made by dog owners in recognizing the signs of the disease in its earliest stage. The sooner a cancer is diagnosed, the better the odds that its progression can be halted and the dog’s life spared or at least, significantly extended. Owners can be instrumental in the early detection of cancer. Be on the lookout for little lumps and bumps and have them evaluated without delay by a veterinarian. Consult your veterinarian regarding any changes in your dog’s energy level. It is estimated that 50 percent of dogs over the age of 10 and that 25 to 30 percent of dogs will be stricken with the disease at some point during their lives, regardless of age. Owners should know that all dogs are at risk for one type of cancer or another and that the extent of the risk can depend on such wide ranging influences such as breed, gender, genetic predisposition, diet, reproductive status and exposure to environment carcinogens. Cancer can affect almost any area of a dog’s anatomy, taking the form of either benign tumours – those that are finite and generally incapable of spreading (metastasizing) – or malignant tumours, those that can metastasize lethally throughout the body. The most frequently observed malignant tumours in dogs are those that arise in the glandular tissue, certain white blood

16

NOVEMBER 2011

cells (lymphocytes), bone tissue and the skin. Following are the most common types of cancer found in the general population of dogs: Lymphoma This is a malignancy that most commonly affects the peripheral lymph nodes but which can also affect lymphatic tissue throughout the dog’s body. Virtually all cases of lymphoma involve the lymph nodes, small bodies of tissue in the neck, groin, belly and other areas of the animal’s anatomy. The typical early sign of this type of cancer is a noticeable swelling of the lymph nodes, most often first noticed under the jaw or in the shoulder region. If untreated, the disease will spread resulting in the dog’s gradual weakening and eventual death. Skin Cancer Usually emerges in the form of small growths (neoplasms) that are often benign but in some cases can spread and invade other tissues and organs. One type of this disease, squamous cell carcinoma, affects the cells in the outer layer of the skin; it most often results from prolonged exposure to sunlight. A frequently observed type of skin cancer is one that originates in white blood cells called mast cells. Additional types of skin cancer originate in the sebaceous glands which secrete wax into a dog’s hair follicles and in the hair follicles themselves. Mammary Gland Cancer This is typically a disease of older, unsprayed females. These tumours develop beneath a nipple and can spread to the lymph nodes, lungs, liver and other areas of the body. This cancer is preventable and can be avoided by spaying a dog at an early age and promptly after she has finished breeding. Oral Cavity Cancer Affects the superficial lining of the mouth as well as the bony components of the upper and lower jaw. This disease is marked by malignant tumours involving squamous cells and certain other tissue cells. The early signs of the condition include bleeding from the mouth, foul breath, apparent pain in eating and drinking and facial deformity. Tumours of the mouth can take the form of persistent sores as well as lumps within the oral cavity.

Hemangiosarcoma This form of cancer is relatively common in dogs especially in Portuguese Water Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Flat Coated Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs and Skye Terriers, among others. It is an incurable tumour of cells that line blood vessels, called vascular endothelial cells. This cancer occurs mostly in dogs over age 6. The common primary sites for hemangiosarcoma are the spleen, the right atrium of the heart and the subcutis, which is the tissue beneath the skin. The pattern of growth for these tumours involves infiltration into normal tissues surrounding the tumour as well as distant spread (metastasis). This disease does not cause pain and the rate of growth in the early stages is relatively slow. That makes it very difficult to detect in the early stages. Tumours are quite large by the time the dog is diagnosed and often surgery is not appropriate due to the risk of haemorrhage. Also, in many cases, the cancer has already spread to many other sites beyond the primary tumour and chemotherapy is not effective in the late stage of this disease. It is hoped that a test will be developed for early detection of this devastating cancer. It is thought that there are hereditary risk factors for hemangiosarcoma. Diligence is our breeding programs are the only preventative strategy to date. However, it is important to remember that “cancer is a genetic disease, although it is not always inheritable”.
