ThePresident’sLetter Dear PWDCC Members, I have to admit that I got a chance to take a sneak preview of this issue of the Waterlog. Wow! Boy, do I wish I had been able to attend the Memphis PWDCA Specialty. Our fellow members, as always, have participated with incredible enthusiasm and great success. Congratulations to you all. This was the twelfth National Specialty for the U.S. club. Kudos to the PWDCA. Now, while not as experienced nor as large, our national club is certainly gaining momentum in this arena. With our first Specialty in British Columbia and our second in Montreal, our third National Specialty is coming together for Calgary in 2004. Our Albertan members are working hard to make this another memorable PWD occasion. Announcements will be made to you as plans come together. Whether you show your dog or not, whether you compete in Agility, Obedience, Water, or other dog sports or not, a National Specialty is for everyone interested in the breed. You can attend with or without your dogs and have a wonderful time no matter what your interest. The shopping alone can be worth the trip. But, the best part of all is the friends you’ll meet there – people and dogs from all over North America. Hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another year. I am so thankful for being a part of this PWD community. We have made some very positive strides over the year. Just look at our Waterlog issues, the web site, and wonderful merchandise – all have now become a recognizable symbol of Look for details coming

At the beginning, the handlers stood in a huddle on the beach trying to keep warm while the judge ran over the rules and patiently answered our many questions. Then we gathered our gear – ropes, floats bumpers, life jackets – plus the dogs wearing their harnesses and prepared to begin work.

The Summer of 2003 – From Pet Owner to PWD Competitor Until June 29th, 2003, I was a simple pet owner. I had a five-year old Portuguese Water Dog named Jac, with whom I was completely besotted. By October 5th, I had morphed into a high performance athlete, competing with Jac in water, obedience, agility and the Super Dog challenge at the PWD Specialty in Memphis. Jac and I came home with a spectacular trophy in water and second and third place ribbons in agility and obedience. No one is more surprised than me. Kate Erickson Here’s our story

sometimes windy, usually cold and always the best place to retrieve a bottleful of rocks – Jac’s all-time favourite toy. I didn’t realize at the time how similar our play was to the competitive work we would learn later. Training with Jac For the first five years we dabbled. Two puppy obedience classes, and lots of gamboling on the Bluffs near our home. Then I watched the Superdogs perform at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The dogs and their handlers were fast and ecstatic. And they made it look so simple. So we signed up for beginners’ agility and took three or four classes. But it wasn’t until this summer that Jac and discovered the joy of training in earnest. The Waterlog announced the Huntsville Water Camp in June. 4

We were proud of our performance in Michigan, even though we didn’t get the title. Despite our focused focused training, Jac didn’t bring me the float line. Instead he dropped the line in the water, and pounced down the beach straight to the steward, using all his doggy charms to cajole him to play with the bumper.

All went well from the beginning… Jac plunges in for the underwater retrieve and flings around to deliver me the three-sided toy. He joyously retrieves his bumper, delivers it to the boat and then leaves it with the steward (phew!) as we prepare for the fourth exercise. Now for the moment of truth. The judge instructs the stewards to drop the line and they row rapidly away from it. I’m crouched beside my dog, directing his eyes to the red floats drifting on the water. Flyball, Agility, Water and Agility Work At a year old we started training Laila in flyball – a fast paced relay race for dogs that involves catching a tennis ball. In Laila’s second summer we started water work – for me the one activity that really reflects what our breed is all about. At the beginning she was very cautious about the water, but as her confidence grew she quickly learned the exercises.

EDUCATION: Practical experience: My sister Sadee (only 8 months old when I was adopted) treats me really well. She taught me a lot of neat tricks like ringing a bell to go outside and drinking out of the toilet. (I used to fall right in but I am big enough now to do it just like her, well almost)! Formal Education: I have completed puppy school and graduated to competitive obedience. Additionally, I am teaching my human brother Brennan (10 years old) all about junior handling. A typical PWD, you might say. But Gus’ inquisitive, adventurous nature brings out behaviors that can be only described as “different”. He has, on his own, learned two new forms of puppy locomotion. Cover Pup Hi, I’m Tikka (from Tekka Maki, as in sushi tuna roll) more formally known as Hunter’s Eastcoast Blackout. I live with John and Roslyn, and Miss Motes and Mr. Schooner, I’m settling in really nicely. I’m 12 weeks old in this photo. I’ve already travelled, born in Michigan, I went to Memphis to the Specialty where I met John and Roslyn and now I live in Toronto. Life for this pup is full of interesting things to do. I go to puppy classes for dogs that plan on a career, try out Agility equipment and will start a fun puppy class soon! I’m pretty sharp and I keep Miss Motes and Mr. Schooner in line, or is it the other way around? I love eating, retrieving balls, chewing bones and tugging on my rope pull. Life is great!

Since 2003 is drawing to a close, we have included your 2004 membership renewal with this issue. This is the perfect time to give us feedback regarding Club events and the Waterlog. We had excellent participation at most 2003 events and would like to do even better in 2004. Please send your renewals to Lorraine by February 28, 2004. Renewals received by January 31, 2004 will be eligible to participate in a draw with Club hats and T’s as prizes. Please put together your contributions for these features and other general interest stories about your wonderful PWDs for publication in our next issues. We will give you $5.00 off your next club merchandise purchase for every story used. Your dog, young or old, could be featured on our cover masthead or the pupographies page, just send a photo and short story for possible selection. Send us photos (hard copies, colour or black and white will be returned), or electronic files of your images (jpegs, tiffs, eps saved at minimum 150dpi). All emails should be titled ‘Waterlog’.
