Skin Cancer Screenings

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. In fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they reach 70 years of age. Some types of skin cancer can even spread to other parts of the body if left untreated, including the brain. The five-year survival rate for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, drops by 32% if left untreated as the likelihood of it

Just as with routine eye and dental exams, the medical community recommends annual visits to the dermatologist to detect disorders and diseases in their early stages. Over 3,000 known diseases are covered in dermatology and include conditions that present themselves in the hair, nails, and mucous membranes. Importantly, diseases that manifest in skin-related symptoms may not always be visible. For example, some internal conditions such as liver disease can cause itchy skin without apparent cause. Therefore, it is important to keep up with routine checkups even in the absence of any physical markings. 2022 prince william living

Prepare for a dermatology appointment by noting any recent changes in skin or nail condition. Be sure to discuss any hairrelated concerns as well, such as loss or thinning. Because hair loss can be linked to a number of potential health issues, it is important to address it as soon as signs are noticeable.

Smile lines suggest a lifetime of laughter. Freckles memorialize time spent in the sun. But our skin is more than just a reflection of our life experiences. It regulates body temperature, protects the body from harmful bacteria and elements, and so much more. Consistent and proper skin care is consequently essential to holistic health — and benefits the body and mind, too. Incorporating the below practices will help protect the vitality of your skin and all that lies underneath.

Routine Dermatology Visits

Clinicians can also help address appearance-related concerns, such as uneven skin tone, fine lines, loss of volume, or unwanted scarring. However, insurance typically does not cover dermatology appointments that are of a strictly cosmetic nature, so it is best to check with your provider prior to making an appointment.

Skincare Routines Facial cleansers, moisturizers, and serums serve a greater purpose than vanity. Just like the teeth, the skin needs regular cleansing and maintenance to keep it free from damage and infection. Despite the dizzying amount of skincare products available, a sufficient routine comprises just three simple steps: wash, moisturize, and apply SPF. The cleanser washes off dead skin cells, dirt, and other accumulated impurities. By removing these, the skin is prepared to fully absorb the moisturizer which helps keep the skin’s protective barrier intact. The American Academy of

The most important step in a basic skin care routine is also the last: sunscreen. It is crucial to select one labeled as “broadspectrum.” This means it protects against both types of ultraviolet rays. UVA rays cause skin aging while UVB rays cause sunburns. Each type of skin damage can lead to skin cancer.

As a bonus, broad-spectrum SPF also protects the skin against the effects of blue light from computer and phone screens, otherwise known as High Energy Visible or HEV light. Blue light is not linked to skin cancer, but prolonged exposure can damage collagen and elastin in the skin leading to premature aging.

Healthy Diet, Healthy Skin

Skin cancer screenings are quick and painless. During an appointment, the provider simply checks the skin and assesses any moles or areas of pigmentation irregular in size, shape, texture, or color. One screening per year can suffice for the average person; however, this may vary depending on the patient’s medical history and should be left to the provider’s discretion.

The Prince William Health Department offers cancer screenings free of charge to residents at the Prince William Health District Manassas Clinic located at 9301 Lee Avenue in Manassas. For more information, to request an appointment, or to check eligibility, call 703-792-6300.

A diet rich and varied in nutrients is one of the most important factors in maintaining overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, nutritional deficiencies and improper diet are directly linked to a variety of skin conditions, too. This is because certain vitamins, particularly A, C, D, and E, are responsible for the regeneration and function of skin cells. As a general rule, try to prince william

Dermatology recommends using a cleanser that does not contain abrasive ingredients or alcohol. After wetting your skin with lukewarm water, apply the cleanser with your fingertips, rinse, and pat dry with a soft towel. Gently apply moisturizer to the face and neck taking extra care around the eyes.

Lips are susceptible to UV radiation too. In fact, UV radiation is the primary risk factor for lip cancer which can spread to other parts of the body; therefore, it is advisable to apply lip balm with SPF 30 or higher as well. Ultraviolet rays of both types can penetrate clouds, so avoid the temptation to skimp on the sunscreen just because the sun isn’t out. Similarly, more than half of UVA rays can penetrate glass. If working indoors near a window, sunscreen is still necessary to fully protect the skin. Most sunscreens lose their efficacy after about two hours, so be sure to reapply as needed.

Now for the good news: 99% of skin cancer cases are curable if detected early enough. While the risk of developing skin cancer varies between individuals depending on factors such as prior diagnoses, blonde or red hair, and level of sun exposure, it is advisable for all to seek routine skin cancer screenings.

Stress management involves two key methods: removing stressors and increasing resiliency. The first step in removing stressors is identifying them. A regularly kept mood journal can help reveal a pattern between increased stress and its source, whether it is environmental, physical, interpersonal, work-related, or something else. This can help guide any necessary lifestyle changes should any be Resiliencywarranted.tostress helps reduce the impact of a stressful experience on the body and mind. Research suggests that individuals with strong, supportive social networks are better able to endure stressful experiences. Proper diet, exercise, and sleep also ensure the body can function properly to include a regulated stress response. Higher self-esteem is linked with less negative affect in response to stressful situations as well. Incidentally, self-esteem can be improved through caring for one’s health and appearance. So, through practicing routine skincare, you can love – and thrive in –the skin you’re in.

As the saying goes, stress is the silent killer. Countless studies have substantiated a link between chronic, psychological stress and increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and more. Now, recent research has revealed a direct, bidirectional pathway between the skin and brain, too.

a proper diet also reduces the likelihood of obesity, a condition that adversely affects the skin outside of the associated diet imbalances. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, obesity can cause changes in the circulatory and lymphatic systems that may lead to a variety of conditions including gout, discoloration, and more. Additionally, obesity is associated with higher incidences of inflammatory skin diseases and bacterial skin infections.

The challenges of modern life can make weight management and loss daunting for the average person despite its benefits. While the ideal path toward weight loss varies per person, the starting point is the same: the primary care physician. A general physical can help determine a patient’s ideal weight and type of interventions warranted. When standard approaches like diet, exercise, and medication fail to produce the desired results, surgical intervention may be recommended. In such a case, it is important to select a bariatric surgeon and facility properly accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement TheProgram.Sentara

Psychological stress sparks the release of cortisol in the body that can lead to inflammatory skin responses and weaken the skin barrier, making it more vulnerable to permeation by microbes. Similarly, when the skin is exposed to environmental stressors such as extreme temperatures or UV rays, it sparks a stress response that makes its way back to the brain. Put simply, healthy skin and a healthy brain depend on each other.

You might not know the name Preservation Virginia, but you may have seen the results of their work across the Commonwealth and even in Prince William. Formed in 1889 as the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Preservation Virginia is the oldest statewide nonprofit organization in the country focused on preserving historic Virginia sites, advocating for historic preservation, and sharing information through various educational programs.

Helping to Preserve Endangered Historic Sites

One Prince William site made the list this year: Manassas National

Endangered Prince William Sites

By Carla Christiano

“A lot of people get us confused with the Department of Historic Resources but we are not a state organization, we are a nonprofit,” said Sonja Ingram, Associate Director of Preservation Field Services for Preservation Virginia.

Although many states in the U.S. have similar organizations, one thing that makes Preservation Virginia stand out is they work across the state and also manage six sites in Virginia including Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown, Cape Henry Lighthouse, and the John Marshall House, explained Ingram. The organization also manages Historic Jamestown, the site of the original fort and a favorite field trip for Prince William fourth graders for decades. In 2004, APVA merged with Preservation Alliance of Virginia. Three years later the organization was renamed Preservation Virginia. One of the programs it now oversees is the Most Endangered Historic Places list, which was started in 2000 by the Preservation Alliance of Virginia to raise awareness and help preserve historic sites. “For elected officials and people outside of the preservation world it helps them pay attention a bit more,” said Ingram. So far, it’s been paying off.

“A few years ago, when we reviewed the program to see if it was helping or not, we concluded it was.” Of the 171 properties that have been included on the list, “Fifty percent have been saved, 10 percent have been lost and about 40 percent are still endangered,” said Ingram. How it Works

Each year in January, Preservation Virginia accepts nominations for threatened historic sites from individuals or organizations throughout Virginia. Typically, they get about 20 to 30 nominations, but in 2021, they received 40 to 50. “Last year’s was probably the highest we’ve had in a while,” said Ingram.

A committee that changes annually reviews the nominations and picks 10 to 12 for the list, though there is no set number, and announces the results in May, Historic Preservation Month, said NominationsIngram.

reflect the diversity of Virginia history. “We’ve had schools. We’ve had courthouses and bridges. You name it. We’ve had every type of historic place. We’ve had battlefields and lighthouses. We’ve had industrial sites like furnaces, but we have also had cemeteries, historic roads, landscapes, and other places that are not buildings or structures. All of these are endangered in different ways,” said Ingram.

Value of Historic Preservation

The park and three other Prince William sites also made the list previously: Mount Pleasant Baptist Church (2021), the Conner House in Manassas Park (2021), and Bristoe Station Battlefield (2014). The church is currently on a watch list as they try to rebuild after an arson fire damaged the building in 2012. The rest are still considered endangered because of nearby development projects.

Carla Christiano is a native of Prince William, admitted history geek, and a technical writer for SAIC.

“It really comes down to the community. If they can organize and be really vocal, that really tips the scales. If the community does not seem to be that interested or that passionate about saving a place, it’s not going to happen,” said Ingram.

Battlefield Park. The Board of County Supervisors is considering rezoning 2,100 acres of farmland directly adjacent to the park for 27 million square feet of data centers (the size of about four Pentagons or 150 Super Wal-Marts opponents say) even though there are already designated technology areas elsewhere. The data centers will be “huge industrial buildings right next to Brawner farm [an important battle site], changing the view of the historic landscape, causing noise in the park, and damaging the watershed. It’s just a really big threat and the idea has been to get out the word as much as possible so that citizens, who we know love the park, can help us oppose this,” said Christy Forman, Membership and Outreach Coordinator at Manassas Battlefield Trust, who nominated the park on behalf of an 11-group coalition that opposes the development.

A noticeable benefit to preserving historic sites is education. “If you can go to a historic site, it’s tangible. You can feel it. You can get a sense of history so much more than reading from a textbook,” said Ingram. Historians often call that the “power of place,” said Forman. “There’s no substitute for standing in a place where history happened.” Historic sites can provide economic benefits through heritage tourism, but they also give an identity to a community. “You can go anywhere in the United States and see a shopping mall with Target,” said Ingram. “However, if you take a historic place like downtown Petersburg, for example, there’s nowhere else in the entire world that looks like that because of its historic buildings, streetscape, and landscape.”

Preservation vs. Development Preservation doesn’t mean no development. “There are ways that preservation and development have worked well together, such as housing developments where they are able to preserve the historic house or were able to sensitively incorporate a cemetery or an industrial park,” said Ingram.

To ensure resources are protected, localities create strategic plans and determine where and what kind of development should take place. Unfortunately, the plans aren’t a guarantee for preservation because of rezoning applications or special use permits, said Ingram. In most communities, there’s usually an emphasis on “building and developing and developing, to get as much tax revenue as possible,” she said.

“Historic sites and natural resources are some of the least valued. These things are always at the bottom of the list,” said Ingram. Ultimately, it depends on a community and its elected officials as to what they value and whether places are preserved.

The inclusion of the park on the MEHP list brings this issue to people who may care about historic preservation but may not live in Prince William or near Manassas Battlefield, said Kyle Hart, who represents the National Parks Conservation Association and is coordinating the coalition effort. “It highlights the importance and urgency of the effort. This is proof that groups that care about the preservation of historic resources across the state agree with us. This is urgent. This is a big deal. It’s bad news for the battlefield and historic resources,” he said.

3 – Stay properly diversified. Once you’ve determined your risk tolerance, the next consideration is diversification. Maintain an appropriate balance of stocks, bonds, and other types of investments. In addition, make certain you don’t have a concentrated position. As a rule of thumb, no individual holding should represent more than 20% of your asset mix. This includes company stock you may hold in your workplace retirement plan.

2 – Reassess your risk tolerance.

he year 2022 has presented challenges for investors, with stock markets experiencing significant volatility and bond markets showing unpredictable movement. Much of this can be attributed to external events. The most notable triggers are Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an extended period of higher inflation, and a shift in monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Times like these can cause anxiety for investors. As you watch markets move up and down, sometimes dramatically in a day, it’s natural to wonder whether it’s time to make changes to your investments. Before you do so, it’s important to think about your finances in the context of the broader picture and seek advice from a professional who can help you evaluate what actions, if any, you should take. Here are five tips to get started.

4 – Continue or expand systematic investments. While volatile markets can be concerning, they shouldn’t

impact your ongoing investment plans. If you make regular contributions to your workplace savings plan or other accounts, it’s best to maintain those investments. If markets go down, your regular contribution will purchase more shares of the investment. That could benefit you in the long run. If you have the ability to save more through systematic investing, don’t be hesitant to boost those amounts you sock away regularly.

1 – Don’t let daily events overly influence your decision making. It is easy to become overwhelmed with the headlines of the day, particularly if seemingly bad news is piling up and having a negative impact on the markets. Keep in mind that we’ve seen many periods where markets suffered sharp downturns. Yet historically, markets as a whole have always recovered any ground lost during short-term setbacks. Headlines come and go, but building an effective, long-term strategy should remain your primary focus.

If you’re feeling uneasy about market volatility, you may need to take another look at the level of investment risk with which you are comfortable. Periods of market volatility are often a true test of the ability to withstand temporary setbacks to your portfolio. Another consideration is your time horizon. For example, if you are within five years of retirement, you may want to consider scaling back the level of risk in your portfolio to protect against the impact of a major downturn occurring at the wrong time — just when you need the money for retirement.

5 Steps to Effectively Manage Today’s Market Volatility

5 – Review your strategy with your financial advisor. It can be helpful to discuss your financial situation in the context of today’s markets with your financial professional. They will be able to help you assess your current position, if your portfolio carries an appropriate level of risk and whether there may be investment opportunities you should consider today. Having a conversation about the best way to approach today’s markets can make a difference and can help keep you on track to achieve your most important goals.

Some of the most popular medical spa treatments include Botox, dermal fillers, body sculpting, and microdermabrasion. Further services can include facials, acne treatments, waxing, eyelash extensions, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, and nail services.

Why is everyone hopping on the med spa train? CNBC reports that a current rise may be due to COVID restrictions lifting and people having renewed access to services that may have been unavailable to them for the past two years. The personal services industry was hit hard in the beginning of the pandemic, but now, they’re seeing a resurgence in clients.

Popularity of med spas has grown in recent years and continues to do so today. According to Business Wire, increasing demand for noninvasive aesthetic treatments is driving the market, and the med spa industry is expected to reach $36.8 billion by 2028.

Services Explained

Dermal fillers plump lips, enhance shallow contours of the face, soften facial creases and wrinkles, and prevent overall signs of early aging. Body sculpting is a treatment that aims to reshape areas of the body and remove extra fat. Microdermabrasion is the use of a minimally abrasive instrument to gently remove the thick outer layer of skin, treating light scarring, discoloration, and sun damage and leaving skin smooth. These treatments can be found at most med spas.

If your confidence could use a boost, you might want to check out a medical spa. Medical spas don’t offer your typical massages and nail treatments; their treatments boost your appearance with results that last. Medical spas, or med spas, are the intersection of a day spa and an aesthetic medical center. They offer a wide range of services from fillers to facials, botox to acne treatments. Unlike a typical day spa, med spas are driven by results instead of relaxation — although don’t worry, relaxation is part of the deal too. But your med spa experience is meant to create lasting results, such as smoother skin or lifted eyelashes. It’s the best of both worlds — rejuvenation with enduring outcomes.

New You Med Spa New You Med Spa opened in January 2021. Mary Kelli, spa manager, said the most popular treatments they offer are their advanced skin care and body sculpting services. These treatments aren’t one size fits all, and that’s the beauty of it. Kelli said the spa customizes treatments based on each client’s individual needs. Although the spa has only been open for a little over a year, Kelli attributes their success and expertise to hiring aestheticians who have more than 10 years of professional experience.

While enjoying an afternoon at a day spa might provide temporary relaxation and comfort, a trip to the med spa will give you results that last for weeks or months. If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up, check out the day spa, but for lasting impact, try a med spa. Feeling intrigued? Here are some medi-spas in the Prince William area for you to test out.

Susan Leaves a Legacy of Love and Laughter By Rebecca Barnes sharing her journey. Susan finished chemo in 2020 and (cautiously) appeared to be able to close this second chapter with cancer. The last time I spoke with Susan was in February of 2022. She was spunky, engaging, and cheerful as always. Unfortunately, on July 8, Susan passed, surrounded by her mother and sister. I struggled while writing this. But in the end, I know Susan would want us all to remember her as the bright, vibrant spirit that she was and honor her by taking care of our own health and the health of those we love.

In 2020, after 7+ years of being cancer-free, Susan discovered that cancer had returned. She fought it, just as she had before, and always used her hardship to help others. With a sunny disposition, she reminded us, "Tomorrow is not promised. Today is a gift, that's why it's called the present! Take time for you!" while promoting health and wellness information and Sentara

If you have been a longtime reader of Prince William Living, you know that the health and wellness of our community is part of our mission statement. In addition, we believe that health education is paramount to all the other quality of life pieces we support because, without your health, everything else suffers. To that end, we deeply value our wellness sponsors and the relationships built from our common goal. One such relationship was with Susan Bahorich, Community Advisor at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. Susan was a former TV journalist; she and I had a lot in common and had fun collaborating on ideas to improve our community's overall health education. As an ovarian cancer survivor, Susan, also know as "Sentara Susan," had a particular passion for cancer awareness, helping those with cancer and celebrating cancer survivors. So when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, Susan was right there. Giving me advice and support, she partnered with me to get the word out about screenings, monthly self-exams, and encouraging women to take charge of their health.

Playing with friends and family members can be fun, but sometimes doing a solo activity can help your child clear their mind and focus on how they feel doing something they love. Taking a walk, going on a bike ride, and dancing are good examples of solo activities. Moving their body will help release the natural “feel-good” chemical endorphins and help improve their overall mood.

Create a Self-Care Journal Journaling is an excellent way to get thoughts and feelings out of your head and onto paper in a safe, nonjudgmental way. Encourage your child to write in their journal daily. Have them share how they are feeling physically and emotionally. They can also write about things they would like to do or about people, places, and things that bring them joy. You can ask them to share with you about the things that they write, but allow them to keep things private if they choose. This is an opportunity for them to express themselves and reflect.

16 | September 2022 prince william living family fun

Affirmations are great to read and recite at any age. They can set the tone for your day and help feed your mind with positive thoughts. Some examples of kid-friendly affirmations include, “I am smart, “I am important, “I believe in myself,” and “I am kind.” Write affirmations on sticky notes or index cards, and place them where your child frequents, such as in their backpack or even in the bathroom. Finding these little reminders of how amazing they are will brighten their day. Do a Solo Physical Activity

e often hear about the importance of selfcare as parents. Whether it’s getting a massage, attending a yoga class, or even taking a trip to the store alone, self-care takes many forms. There’s never a wrong way to invest time in taking care of yourself. As important as this time is for us as caregivers, it’s also important to encourage children to take time to slow down, relax, and do things that allow them to recharge. As school is back in full swing and our kids are busier with homework and extracurricular activities, it’s more important than ever to encourage children to incorporate their own favorite self-care activities into their routines. Here are a few ideas to get them started.

By Jennifer Halter

Meditation and Breathing

Start small by doing short breathing exercises, such as slow breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. If your child is ready to meditate, start with guided meditations specifically made for children. A quick Google search will provide you with many free options. Breathing exercises and meditation time can also become part of their nightly bedtime routine to help them prepare for a good night’s sleep.

Plan for Nothing Sometimes the best self-care is not having anything on the schedule at all. Plan for some down time each week/weekend. Let your child choose if they want to do anything or nothing. Give them an opportunity for quiet time to read, watch their favorite show or movie, or take a nap. Whatever it is that feeds their soul and allows them the chance to recharge their batteries, encourage it!

Get Pampered

When we think of kids being pampered, we typically think of tasks such as getting a fresh haircut or being treated to their first professional manicure or pedicure. However, there are many fun ways you can pamper them at home for little to no cost. Plan a spa day where you can do simple activities such as painting fingernails or toenails or giving hand or foot massages. You can even do face masks. Find fun varieties of face masks at major retailers and even dollar stores. When choosing a mask, be sure that it is gentle enough for young skin. If you want to avoid using store-bought masks, you can make your own using all-natural ingredients.

For a DIY option, try a honey face mask. Have your child mash up a half of a ripe banana in a bowl until it turns into a smooth paste. Add one tablespoon of warm honey and mix until you have a firmer, but still smooth, paste. Apply mask to a clean, but damp face and let sit for approximately 30 minutes. Remove with warm water and a washcloth. This is a great recipe if your child has overly dry skin (perfect in the winter months!).

It can be difficult for many adults to take time to slow down. It can be even more challenging for overly active, busy kids. Slowing down and having focused time, even if it’s just five minutes a day, can help your child feel calm and centered, something we all need to feel.

The Food The world class culinary team at Red House Tavern brings a rich amount of experience. Executive Chef Joel Valente spent several years training in New York City and hails from the Inn at Little Washington. The pastry and sous chefs bring culinary knowledge from around the United States, as well as an established rapport with Valente from working together previously.

She says most of the menu items are designed to share so customers can have a fulfilling and unique eating experience. It’s about people having a place to come where they can break bread, connect with others, and try a lot of different things in a polished atmosphere that boasts all the expectations of fine dining.

Breakfast and brunch goers can enjoy house-made pastries and Virginia southern favorites like locally sourced fried chicken and waffles.

“Every dish is thoughtfully put together with the freshest ingredients, and the menu changes daily,” Lelle says. “We like to keep it updated so everything we serve is as fresh as it can possibly be.”

Tucked away into the Hilton Garden Inn hotel sits Red House Tavern and its Crossroads Café. It’s not just another hotel restaurant, but rather, a boutique farm-to-table spot that serves up house-crafted cocktails and a chef-created menu that changes Theseasonally.teamis dedicated to providing folks with a unique experience, in a high-end setting that’s more comfortable than pretentious.

“Our shareable plates are a little larger than a tapas serving, so it allows the chance to have different dishes in one sitting,” Lelle says. “People can come in for a quick bite or a larger full meal.”

Hilton Garden Inn Director of Events Clarice Lelle ¬— also a former pastry chef — says it’s safe to say anyone coming to Red House Tavern is in good hands. The team’s dedication to serving up food that delights is at the forefront of each and every plate that comes out of the kitchen.

ince the 1700s, Haymarket has been a small, yet wellknown community hub that’s served as a gathering point for locals and visitors alike. Today’s it’s a thriving, quaint Prince William town making its mark on the food scene.

Items like charred octopus, homemade pasta, chef-selected artisanal cheeses, artic sea bass, and local oysters are just a few well-loved staples foodies can expect to find on the main menu.

“The community has been really receptive of what we’re trying to do, which is to offer the kinds of items — like bone marrow, tuna crudo, and octopus — you might see in fine dining establishments housed in bigger cities,”Lelle says. “Our chef is amazingly creative and it’s great to see the community embrace it.”

Thesetting.restaurant offers space that can be reserved for birthdays, graduations, or any occasion. Red House Tavern will draw up a special menu for these celebrations, so folks can enjoy dishes created especially for them.

“We want people to enjoy themselves and experience cuisine on a whole other level,” says Lelle. “Whether you come just for a drink or a full meal we want to make sure your experience is Redmemorable.”HouseTavern is located at 15001 Washington Street in Haymarket. “Our chef makes it a priority to personally connect with all of our vendors and visit them on a regular basis,” says Lelle. “It’s farmto-table in every sense.”

Red House Tavern's chef-created menu changes seasonally and includes unique dishes like tuna crudo, arctic sea bass, and roasted bone marrow.

And don’t forget the drinks, because cocktails matter here. Red House Tavern’s signature fig old fashioned has all the elements of the traditional drink, but with — of course — figs. In a tribute to summer, Lelle recommends trying the Summer Sun, which is light and fruity with hints of coconut and pineapple.

The restaurant is already attracting a bevy of neighborhood regulars and Lelle feels Red House Tavern fills a gap the community maybe didn’t realize it had.

The Crossroads Café is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Sundays and offers espresso drinks, pastries, comfortable space, and Wi-Fi. It’s a great spot for hotel guests to work and locals to take a break from their traditional work-from-home

Education, participation, and enlightenment — these are the three ingredients the award-winning Castaways Repertory Theatre have been using to successfully involve and engage the Woodbridge community for more than 40 years. In 1981, Shirley and Tom Attanaro, Ali Boylston, Dawn Willard, Zoya Bishop, and Leslie Nebb joined forces to establish Castaways Repertory Theatre. With unique backgrounds in community theatre — these talented actors solidified their love for performing by creating a lasting legacy for thespians and theatre buffs Muchalike.like its name, Castaways “embodies the adventurous approach we take to theater,” says Lucas Berg, President of the theatre. “The actors who founded the Castaways had some creative differences with their existing theater troupe. They had a more inclusive vision for a theater company that offered more than one type of production. That legacy continues today with our unique combination of plays, musicals, and theatrical readings.”

Castaways’ artistic director/play selection chair presents show suggestions given by the audience, and the members vote on a particular roster of shows for a season. With so much variety in show content, adults and children of all ages can easily find a show to enjoy or participate in. Participation Participation is also an integral part of this all-volunteer, nonprofit organization.

THE REPERTORYCASTAWAYSTHEATRE

Education Educating audiences and participants in shows, whether they are onstage performers or backstage crew, is an utmost priority for “VolunteersCastaways. learn skills by helping out with set building, lights and sound, working front of house,” says Kathy Sahlberg, Secretary for the community theatre. “Most shows are more than just entertainment… The plays sometimes have themes that expose people to ideas they might not have thought about.”

20 | September 2022 prince william living on a high note

Every year, at least four shows are slated for the season, and subject matters range from the classic dramas (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) to musicals (Seussical the Musical) to comedies (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and everything in between.

Where Quality Live Performances and Community Meet

The COVID-19 pandemic halted much of the Castaways operations like it did for many organizations.

“Between people moving, fear of COVID, and people dropping out due to other commitments, we ended up with a cast of 10. Theater, like life, is never certain. Our long-time artistic director and the director of Cinderella, Zina Bleck, passed away before the show opened. Scott Olsen, one of the actors in the show, stepped up and took over directing the production. Scott and the cast put on a wonderful show that honored Zina’s memory.”

“When we first cast Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 2020, we had almost 30 actors in the show,” says Sahlberg.

Dominique McIndoe (mcindoe@princewilliamliving.com) is an assistant editor at Rowman & Littlefield and a longtime writer.

The Castaways Repertory Theatre is especially glad to have live and in-person shows back in the community.

“The theater is for everyone, no matter your level of experience, natural talent or comfort onstage,” Berg says to those in the Prince William community who are interested in performing arts.

“There is a place for you with ForCastaways.”moreinformation on auditions, showtimes, membership signup, or donating, visit castawaystheatre.org.

Outreach The Castaways Repertory Theatre acknowledges that it wouldn’t be where it is today without its outreach.

“We really believe community theater should be accessible for everyone,” Berg assures. “To that end, we have worked very hard to keep dues low, and we believe our dues are currently among the lowest in the region. Additionally, we offer needs-based scholarships to cover membership dues for those who cannot afford Participationit.” from the community also fosters togetherness, unity, and teamwork among the members. The most remarkable part of Castaways after 40+ years, according to Sahlberg, is “the way the cast and crews work together to put on a good show. Most all the people who participate know we all have to work together as a team.” Berg’s sentiments are similar.

“We donate tickets to an organization that gives tickets to other nonprofits, so they can give their participants a theatrical experience,” says Sahlberg. Castaways will also be participating in the Prince William County Arts Council Arts Alive! 2022 festival on Sept. 12 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center to celebrate the diversity and excellence of visual, literary, and performing artists and ensembles from the Greater Prince William Area. “It is a great opportunity to see many of the organizations in Prince William County.”

“Everyone contributes through their own strengths,” says Berg. “It is truly magical the friendships that are forged. But I think the most amazing part of Community Theater is getting to watch the participants — actors, directors, choreographers, stage technicians, front of house, and other production roles — come together, and through their collective efforts deliver something special. The sense of self-efficacy that participants develop, that sense of ‘Wow — I can do this!’ is my favorite part.”

prince william living September 2022 | 21

In spite of these challenges, uncertainties and rebuilding processes since 2020, Berg notes that, “We have reconstituted our Steering Committee and there is tremendous energy and optimism about the future. We are taking a fresh approach to our planning for the 2022-2023 season, and we have secured performance dates for three shows [for the latter half of 2022] … We’ve put on several outdoor performances in collaboration with the Town of Occoquan. I think people need a creative outlet and the opportunity to connect with a story — and we need it now more than ever.”

“We welcome people of all shapes and sizes and we’re not afraid to explore alternative casting,” says Berg. “We are a very inclusive theater company. We have never lost sight of the fact that this is a community theater company, and we want there to be room in our troupe for anyone in the community willing to be an active Theparticipant.”oldand the young in the community are encouraged to help with age-appropriate activities. Castaways creates productions that have only children in them, adult-actors-only shows, and some with both adults and kids. Signing up for membership to Castaways is a requirement to perform, but there are three flexible and affordable options for actors to choose from.

For the 2022-2023 season, theatre lovers can expect to indulge in some of their favorite classics including The Taming of the Shrew, Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, and Alice in Wonderland

hen it comes to self-defense, there’s no one-size-fits-all strategy. The best methods and techniques for a person depends on their strength, skill level, and abilities. Luckily, Prince William residents have a wide array of classes to choose from to determine what works best for them. No one should be in a position that forces them to call upon these skills but having them accessible does more than prepare one to protect themselves.

R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense Program

“Being physically fit increases your chances of successful self-defense,” said Director Ronald Villamar. “Our programs incorporate drills and exercise to mimic the stress and exhaustion you would feel during an attack to train you in defending yourself while under stress. This benefits cardio fitness and builds strength as well.”

Many localities’ police and sheriff departments offer free or lowcost 12-hour self-defense courses for women using the Rape Aggression Defense, or R.A.D, Basic Physical Defense Program for Women. The program is nationally recognized and endorsed by multiple organizations including the National Self Defense ThisInstitute.method incorporates classroom instruction by certified course instructors as well as hands-on learning. Topics covered include risk reduction, personal safety, and physical defense strategies. The program is completable in just one 12-hour session; however, attendees are encouraged to take part in additional sessions to further refine their skills. Home upgrades are necessary for a variety of reasons, but many homeowners look to update their homes to add comfort and beauty. While a complete renovation can be appealing, it can also be costly and time consuming. However, if you’re willing to take on some of the work yourself, there are ways to upgrade your living spaces to add style (and value) without the assistance of a contractor. Consider these DIY ideas to spruce up your home’s aesthetics and create a more attractive place to dwell.

When it comes to simple DIY projects, a new coat of paint can drastically update your spaces without requiring major renovations. Light colors like gray, beige, or white can make smaller spaces feel more open while darker shades like navy and purple can create a dramatic look. If you don’t want (or need) to paint the entire room, adding a pop of color with an accent wall or touching up the trim are quick and easy improvements. Adding paint to a less traditional spot like the ceiling or refreshing cabinets with a new color can also help bring your spaces to life.

Upgrade Window Treatments Windows can often be overlooked or left with the simple paper shades or aluminum blinds the builder initially installed.

Consider replacing them with plantation shutters, wooden blinds, or drapes that better suit the style of the room. In addition to blinds, curtains provide another opportunity to add design elements that align with your tastes. From geometric panels to sheers, the possibilities are nearly endless. Or simply match the curtain panels to the color of your walls or an accent color for a look that can match almost any style.
