Oh! The Places You’ll Go! By Dawn Klavon

I

n the words of the great philosopher, Dr. Seuss, “Oh! The Places You’ll Go!” Granted, the renowned children’s author may not have been referring to fabulous weekend destinations, but we’re sure he wouldn’t mind extending a little poetic license. This summer is prime time to get back out in the world and enjoy — whether traveling by trains, planes, or automobiles. Why not hit the dusty trail and carve out some “me” time over a lazy summer weekend? Prince William is conveniently located near some excellent spots to relax, recalibrate, and renew. Here are our suggestions for memorable weekend destinations to amp up your summer.

Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts at Penn State University For all you Nittany Lions out there — and even those who are not — plan to visit Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, July 14 to 17 for the gifts-galore Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Here’s a weekend to get your shopping muscles moving. Penn State is about three and a half hours from Prince William and exists in the quaint, picturesque town of State College. It’s a weekend trifecta: a quick drive north, small-town charm, and unique shopping opportunities, which all make for an outstanding weekend adventure. Alumni of the well-respected university may want to take a trip down memory lane as well and peruse the campus of their youth.

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts takes place at Penn State University July 14-17 this year.

“State College is known as Happy Valley to the thousands of students who attend Penn State, but it is always a popular destination for adults and retirees,” said Carolyn Cafaro, a Pittsburgh-area resident who frequents State College. “The drive to State College is scenic, and upon arrival, you are welcomed by a vibrant town full of a variety of restaurants and bars.” At the arts festival, you can support independent artistentrepreneurs from across the country. Anyone can order items off Amazon, but you can find that just right, one-of-a-kind gift for friends or family at the festival. Whether you’re looking for a work of art, piece of jewelry, houseware, or all of the above, this bevy of talented artists has something for you in a wide variety of media — from ceramics to wood. Consistently ranked as one of the top outdoor fine art and fine craft shows in the nation, more than 300 exhibitors offer a wide variety of objects for sale including baskets, ceramics, jewelry, fiber, painting, photography, and wearable art. There will be something to suit everyone’s taste and wallet. With participating artisanal food vendors offering small-batch goodness from salsas to salad dressings, a variety of specialty foods, and hand-crafted goodies, you’ll be stuffed silly and happy as can be. Hotels are plentiful in the State College area, as mobs of Penn State football fans make weekend pilgrimages to the town each fall and need a place to rest after long days of cheering on their team. Plan to arrive Friday afternoon and depart Sunday afternoon to maximize your time at the festival and fully enjoy your summer adventure in Happy Valley. For more information, visit arts-festival.com/ and happyvalley.com/ penn-state/.

Berkeley Springs Spa in West Virginia is less than two hours from Prince William.

modest prices. “Folks should visit because Berkeley Springs is a hidden gem,” said Stephanie Rebant, President of Travel Berkeley Springs. “Embrace the great outdoors, shopping, dining, make a spa or alternative health appointment, and come with a sense of adventure!”

Berkeley Springs is a historic spa and art-filled town nestled in the West Virginia mountains, less than two hours from Prince William. Touted as “America’s First Spa,” tourists flock to the community for the landscapes, healing waters, nationally recognized art scene, various dining options, and distinctive shops. An easy drive from the D.C. area, it’s the perfect weekend escape to experience West Virginian charm.

You won’t lack for activities, if that’s what you’re looking for. Just take your pick: mountain bike or enjoy a scenic hike on one of the many trails at Cacapon State Park, Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, Eidolon Nature Preserve, stroll through the Paw Paw Tunnel Towpath, swim at the beach and lake area at Cacapon State Park, paddle boat, paddle board, canoe, or fish, or just relax and soak your feet in the warm springs at the downtown Berkeley Springs State Park. Don't forget to take a tubing trip with Crafts Adventures along the Cacapon or Potomac Rivers or at Lake Siri at Coolfont Resort. A stay in Berkeley Springs is sure to be filled with long-lasting memories and fun for the entire family.

Berkeley Springs is known for its warm mineral springs. The water conducted through Warm Springs Ridge emerges only in a single cluster of thermal springs now located in Berkeley Springs State Park. The 74°F temperature of the water is constant, which is delightful for visitors.

“Experience meeting the quaint and quirky friendly locals and business owners,” Rebant said. “Enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery and finding your perfect chosen getaway is like stepping back in time to enjoy moving at a slower pace and remembering all the little things to love about life.”

The original warm mineral springs are the centerpiece of various treatments offered to the public in two facilities operated by the state of West Virginia. The historic Roman Bath House on the north end of the park offers nine individual, 750-gallon walk-in tubs in private chambers available by the half hour. The park is located in the heart of town and also has an outdoor pool open in summer, a public tap for free spring water, and open pools of springs run-off. Budget-conscious spa goers will love the park’s

Endless Caverns in New Market, and Luray, Virginia The theme of this weekend destination is stunning caverns, (continues on page 6) prince william living July 2022

(continued from page 5) though there’s plenty more to explore in the area. Endless Caverns in New Market and Luray Caverns in Luray are both fascinating spots in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In New Market, don’t miss the breathtaking caves, located at the Endless Caverns RV Resort. Discovered back in 1879 as simply a deep, dark hole covered by boulders, this beautiful underground treasure has been fascinating visitors for nearly 150 years. Sitting at the base of the Massanutten Mountain range, this 6-mile cave system still has areas that have yet to be explored. Tourists can can be guided through a mile of the various cave rooms as you travel through the stunning limestone backdrop. Knowledgeable guides will talk about the history and teach you about the geology of this subterranean treasure. Endless Caverns is a great stop for folks who RV or tent camp, and the tour of the caverns alone is worth the trip. The pet-friendly campground offers caves, a swimming pool, playground, nature trails, a catch-and-release pond, game room, and a bath house for camping enthusiasts. Luray Caverns is the largest and most popular caverns destination in the eastern United States — experiencing them feels like you’re on another planet. Visitors can participate in tours along well-lit, paved walkways that lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high, towering stone formations, and natural wonders at every turn. “For me, experiencing the wonders of nature as you walk through Luray Caverns is simply awe-inspiring,” said Bill Huffman, Director of Marketing and PR for the Luray Caverns Corporation.

Visitors can access Tilghman Island by car or by boat.

“The variety of formations, natural color and rooms filled with towering stone columns impresses me every time I stroll through this U.S. Natural Landmark.” Open every day of the year, Luray Caverns’ general admission ticket includes the caverns, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Toy Town Junction, and the Shenandoah Heritage Village. On top of that, the largest evergreen hedge maze in the mid-Atlantic is on site, offering a half-mile of fun for tourists, and the physically fit in your party may enjoy the rope adventure park, offering two thrilling courses above the ground. “My advice for visitors is stay and enjoy everything that is included in the general admission ticket,” Huffman said. “The Car and Carriage Caravan displays the history of America in a collection of fully restored cars, carriages, and coaches; the Shenandoah Heritage Village celebrates the region’s culture; Toy Town Junction showcases thousands of toys and various model trains. There is so much to do and enjoy here.” For more information, visit endlesscaverns.com/camping/, townofluray.com/, or luraycaverns.com/.

Tilghman Island, Maryland For a laid-back, relaxing waterfront getaway, plan a weekend excursion to Tilghman Island in Maryland. Located in Talbot County, this tiny fishing village will take you out of the rat race and transport you to a much simpler time and place. Situated between the Chesapeake Bay and Choptank River, you can access the picturesque island by car or boat. It’s less than three hours from Prince William to the island; an easy journey with a charming destination awaiting.

Feel like an early 20th century spelunker in Endless Caverns, one of the few living caverns in Virginia.

“We’re completely different from other destinations on the Eastern Shore,” said Tilghman Island resident and Country Store Co-owner Patricia McGlannan. “It’s like stepping back in time in a lot of respects — when people show up at the store, they’re surprised how friendly everyone is; you don’t get to be a stranger for very long.”

Funland on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk offers rides and games for plenty of family fun.

Visitors can rent a boat, go fishing, shop in a variety of inviting spots, and find an array of fun dining options for fresh seafood. Don’t miss the Sea Glass Museum or the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum, which celebrates the rich history of the island's maritime culture and features historical artifacts and local artists.

The mile-long boardwalk at Rehoboth is crowded and lined with rides, food stands, and souvenir and beach-themed shops. Funland is geared toward the younger set, with rides and game booths sure to entertain the kids, while a number of bars and restaurants cater to a crowd looking to see and be seen.

“It’s getting to really have a great flavor of the folks and what the way of life was like back in the day,” McGlannon said.

Shopping is a popular sport in Rehoboth, and outlet malls and specialty shops are located throughout the area. Rehoboth has a plentiful number of bed and breakfasts and inns to choose from, as well as larger-scale hotels, and many restaurants with a leaning toward — you guessed it — seafood specialties.

The island has the busiest drawbridge in the United States, according to residents. Five quaint inns offer gracious hospitality for visitors. You easily put constant action on pause and enjoy the peace and serenity the island provides. “I’m in love with the island,” said Mary McCarthy, Director of the island’s Sea Glass Museum and Owner of When’s Low Tide candles. “We’re just a tiny island in the middle of the Chesapeake, but it’s very much the end of the world. You can see forever — you can watch both the sunrise and sunset from the island, and both are incredibly scenic.” For more information about Tilghman Island, visit tilghmanisland.com/.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Who couldn’t use a little sunshine, sand between their toes, and a beachy cocktail? Rehoboth Beach, Delaware may be just the ticket for a weekend getaway by the shore. It’s about a three-and-a-halfhour drive from Prince William and offers plenty of sun and fun. Rehoboth Beach calls itself the "Nation's Summer Capital" due to the large number of Washington, D.C. residents who vacation here annually. It’s a popular vacation destination for families and young singles alike, and also has a significant gay and lesbian community. There are several neighboring beaches — Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach — that offer slightly different vibes, but overall the Delaware shoreline offers compelling restaurants, boardwalks and outdoor activities.

“Year round it’s great rain or shine — the beaches are fabulous, there’s fantastic people watching and indoor/outdoor restaurants,” said Tracy Toth, a frequent Rehoboth visitor from the D.C. area. “When there’s bad weather, there’s awesome outlet shopping, lots of restaurants and movie theaters, so there’s plenty to do whatever the weather and whether you’re young or old.” Charter a fishing boat, rent a bike or kayak, try windsurfing, paddleboards, or just check out local breweries and wineries; you’ll find it all on the Delaware shore. For more information about Rehoboth Beach and the neighboring Delaware beaches, visit visitdebeaches.com/rehoboth-beach/.

Start Your Journey No matter where you end up roaming this summer, be sure to unplug from your everyday routine to rest and reconnect with family and loved ones. your finances Protect Your Finances Online By Bennett C. Whitlock III Whitlock Wealth Management

D

uring periods of crisis, cybercriminals often increase their attacks, taking advantage of chaos to pry information from unsuspecting victims. Here are some steps you can take during these turbulent times to protect your identity and finances online: 1. Create strong passwords. A password is considered strong when it consists of 10 or more characters, a combination of upper and lower letters with at least one number and one symbol. Cybersecurity experts recommend changing your passwords as often as every three months, as long as your replacement passwords are sufficiently strong. Consider using a password manager, which makes it easier to generate and recall strong passwords. 2. Update your antivirus software. Hackers are constantly looking for ways into personal computer systems. The best antivirus software providers stay one step ahead of the scammers, but you need to enable updates for maximum benefit. Keep your antivirus program current to reduce your vulnerability to these attacks. 3. Use only secure Wi-Fi. Avoid logging in to financial accounts when you’re away from a trusted Wi-Fi connection. Public Wi-Fi may not be secure, which means any personal or financial information you enter during a public Wi-Fi connection may be easily compromised. At home, double check that your router is properly encrypted to prevent unauthorized access. 4. Monitor your accounts. Keep a close eye on your checking, saving, and investment account activity. If you notice anything strange, contact your bank or credit card issuer. Give your financial institution permission to notify you of suspicious activity by activating alerts. 5. Turn on two-step authentication. Many financial institutions offer the option of two-step authentication to discourage fraud. When you opt into this added layer of security, you will have to go through an extra step to verify it’s you when accessing accounts. It may take another minute of your time, but it’s worth the security of knowing you’re making it much harder for hackers to breach your accounts. 6. Stop before you click. Be wary of spoof emails and online ads that seek access to your passwords and other sensitive information. Many spammers use fake return addresses that are easy to spot, but others have adopted more sophisticated schemes to get you to engage.

FUTURE KINGS Engineering Bright Futures By Dominique McIndoe

W

orkers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields are in high demand in the United States, according to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economics and Statistics Administration. Policymakers have long emphasized the importance of educating school-aged students for STEM-related jobs and predicted by 2022, one million more STEM professionals would be needed to combat the shortage. Underserved students are at a notably significant disadvantage, and they lag far behind their peers in STEM preparedness. Often this is related to a lack of access to high-quality educational and careerplanning opportunities and resources. Though more young people of color are attending colleges and universities than ever before, the efforts to shrink the post-collegiate opportunity gap are still playing catch up.

Creating Pipelines of Talent Future Kings, a Woodbridge nonprofit formed in 2009, seeks to address and rectify this disparity by serving boys of color from ages 11 to 18 from economically challenged communities through advanced STEM education. Their central mission is to create a pathway for success and a pipeline of young African American and Hispanic men who excel in science, technology, engineering, and/ or mathematics to positively influence their communities and be culturally responsible professionals and entrepreneurs. “Future Kings is so much more than an after-school program,” said Dr. Arik King, the Founder and Executive Director. Instead, the organization presents a unique combination of college-level STEM education, mentoring, training, practical experiences, revenue-generating activities, and mastery of 21st-century technology for the young men. The students are given exams and homework, and every second and fourth Saturday of the month during the school year, the students meet at the Woodbridge campus of Northern Virginia Community College to dive into

classes from one of four major concentrations: cybersecurity, biomedical sciences, custom engineering, and computer game design. In addition, they get to choose which discipline they’d like to participate in. “As a parent, what was helpful about Future Kings was they didn’t just teach the boys about STEM,” said Shanika Boyd. Her 16-year-old son, Marselles, has been in the program for over three years. “They teach them leadership skills, finances, and entrepreneurship. Future Kings has provided my son opportunities that will allow him to get a head start and gain better equity in education.” Marselles’s life story is remarkable. He has suffered from eosinophilic esophagitis since birth. He cannot eat food in the traditional way due to an inflamed esophagus. Marselles started in the Future Kings cybersecurity program but switched to the biomedical sciences program soon after. Science is his real superpower, Boyd explains of her son, and he’s taken steps closer to his dream of becoming a research scientist so he can find a cure for EoE. “I like going to the biomedical program because seeing how we were working on trying to find a cure and testing out different organisms and cells inside of a lab made me think: ‘What if I put this knowledge and experience into finding a cure for my disease?’” said Marselles. He’d previously worked on a grant with the University of Nebraska that tried to find a cure for COVID-19, so he’s gotten valuable, hands-on experience in the research science field. “Now, I’m hoping in the near future that I get a chance to help other kids who have my disease too.” Boyd was looking for an organization to teach her sons about STEM and character building. Marselles’s older brother, Cameron, was also in Future Kings years before him as a computer game design student. Cameron now studies design at Northern Virginia Community College.

Looking at the history of Black people beginning on the African continent, the varied and diverse populations had already been engaged in advanced math, astronomy, architecture, engineering, medicine, and navigation centuries before European influence. Tribes, empires, and kingdoms built wealth, for example, through kings like Mansa Musa and Sundiata Keita. This legacy stretches to modern history, where figures like Dr. Vivien Thomas and Mary Winston Jackson, among many others, built upon the foundation of Black excellence in 20th- and 21st-century STEM.

Iron Sharpens Iron

Future Kings students learn STEM concepts through hands-on projects and working together.

“That’s all you could hope and ask for is that your children embrace their challenges and try to find solutions no matter how hard it might seem. That, to me, is why Future Kings is really important to our family.”

Building Legacies As an organization whose objective is to help Black and brown boys grow into successful men, it’s only natural that a portion of their instructors be people of color. Those who are not, are not culturally congruent. “‘Culturally congruent’ means that the instructors relate to the students as though they had the same background, foundation, and outlook,” said Dr. King. “They relate to the boys as if they were their own sons.” The name “Future Kings” is also as it suggests. Dr. King did not name the organization after himself, but he happened upon the title with the help of his colleague from George M. Hampton Middle School Latoya Hill, née Boone. “I was telling her what type of organization I wanted to start and why,” said Dr. King. “We bounced around different names and couldn’t come to an agreement on anything. Then, one day in the hallway, she came to me, and she asked: ‘What do you think about the name Future Kings?’ As soon as she said it, my eyes lit up, and that was it. It wasn’t until much later when either one of us recognized the coincidence of my last name and the name group.”

Future Kings is a holistic program, teaching soft skills in addition to technical skills. Networking is often a crucial component of success. Well-renowned individuals who come from underserved upbringings, visit students to provide positive examples of men who look like them and who are successful in the STEM field. Past speakers include Surgeon General of the Army, Lt. Gen. R. Scott Dingle, and music industry executive Benny Pough. Students learn and relate to one another in ways they sometimes can’t in school. Some boys love the social interaction of likeminded, goal-oriented peers and are motivated toward success. Others like that the program complements their schoolwork and puts them ahead of the game. These interactions allow students to “rub elbows” and work together toward a common goal. “If you can surround yourself with the right tools, you’ll be able to navigate through some of the challenges you have to face,” said Dr. King. “This is what we call the ‘engineering process’ — the engineering of their adult careers.” Providing this combination of tools for these young men of color is as important as ever. The number of unmotivated boys and underperforming young men in schools across ethnic backgrounds increases yearly nationwide (continues on page 22)

The “future” in “Future Kings” is fitting. Not only does the organization empower the young men for the future, but they use the past and current achievements of those of African descent to encourage the students in their pursuits. “The name comes from the idea that the participants we are recruiting come from a legacy of success and achievement,” said Dr. King. prince william living July 2022

health & wellness Working from Home Brings its Own Set of Pains…More People Than Ever Before Are Suffering from Neck and Back Issues Provided by Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center

T

he pandemic has accelerated a work-from-home trend; it’s estimated 25% of U.S. workers are now working from home. Unfortunately, since the pandemic began, 39% of workers are having more low back pain and 46% are having more neck and upper back pain. These are the findings from a recent study shared in the Archives of Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology. The good news is you don’t have to live with the discomfort. Jason Williams is a Doctor of Chiropractic, Outpatient Therapy at Sentara Therapy Center in Dumfries. Dr. Williams shares some tips to help with those aches and pains. What kind of changes in your patients have you noticed since the working-from-home trend has accelerated? A lot more patients with neck and back pain can’t recall a specific injury. Not having a great workspace at home is leading to more chronic overuse injuries. Folks are moving less due to the work-from-home trend and it’s affecting their quality of life. What can these professionals do for themselves to prevent back and neck pain? Here are my top five tips for professionals working from home: n Take active breaks (get up and move) every 20 minutes. n Create a dedicated workspace; avoid working on the couch or bed. n Perform some simple stretches and exercises a couple times a day. n Make healthier diet choices. Your diet 100% affects how you feel. n Make exercise a priority. Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. How does someone know it’s time to seek care at Sentara Therapy Center for their back and/or neck pain? Here are some warning signs you should pay attention to: n Discomfort is becoming more frequent or constant. n Your pain is getting worse. n Pain is affecting your ability to enjoy free time. n Home treatments aren’t helping.

family fun

Taking the Stress Out of Family Travel By Jennifer Halter

W

ith summer in full swing, many families have plans to travel and soak up the beautiful weather this time of year. If you have kids, making sure those road trips or flights go smoothly can sometimes add stress to something meant to be fun. Here are some tips to make your next vacation or weekend getaway easier.

Map It Out

Prior to your trip, spend time with your children looking at a map of where you’re going and any important landmarks you may be seeing along the way. Let them research your destination and provide input on activities they would like to do or things they would like to see. Allowing your children to be involved in this process will help keep the excitement up after being in the car for a while, as they will know things they should be on the lookout for or know that “in 30 minutes, we should be seeing…,” for example.

Road Trip Bingo

This is a fun activity for all ages, including younger children. Create a bingo card with objects or things you would typically see while driving. Examples include, a stop sign, a bird, a red truck, to name a few. As your children see each item, they can mark it off their bingo

16 |

card. Reward the first to get bingo with a small prize or special treat at your next stop. For younger children, use pictures of items instead of words. For older children/teens, you can be really specific with things, such as “an SUV with a Florida license plate.” You can make/print your own card or look for something reusable from the dollar store.

Pack the Snacks

If you’ve ever traveled with a young child, you know that snacks are the ultimate lifesavers. Prior to your trip, have your children pick out their favorite portable snacks to take along. This can also help with passing the time if you set a timer or designate “snack time” during your trip. For example, you can provide snack at the top of every hour or if driving, combine snack with restroom/ stretching breaks.

Busy Bags

Keeping the kids from getting bored on your adventure can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if you’re not prepared. In the weeks prior to your trip, spend time putting together busy bags or busy binders for each child. Bags can include a few of their favorite toys, books, or crafts. If you have multiple children who will

play together, there are games such as checkers and tic-tac-toe that are come in magnetic versions, so pieces stay secure. You can also look for mini versions of board games or card games, which would be perfect on an airplane ride. You can also compile your own busy binder for each child. There are tons of free resources online, including coloring sheets, crossword puzzles, and word finds you can print for your child’s binder. Customize the binders based on your child’s age and themes they enjoy, such as dinosaurs or unicorns. Blank paper is also a great addition if your child likes to doodle or write. Include a zipper pouch for pencils, pens, crayons, and markers in each binder. If you are traveling with devices, such as tablets or smartphones, be sure to pack chargers for each child as well as a portable battery pack, if possible. Make sure devices and battery packs are fully charged before leaving home, and be sure to charge up during rest stops.

Photo Memories

Once you arrive at your destination, it’s full speed ahead on making memories and documenting everything through photos. But there are many fun and interesting photos that can be captured along the way and will show the trip from a different perspective from each family member. If you have them available, give each child a smartphone, digital camera, or other device that allows them to take photos. Have them snap pics of anything that excites them throughout the trip. Once you return home, look through the photos together to experience the fun from their view.

COCK & BOWL BELGIAN BISTRO

Brings Belgium to PWC By Dawn Klavon

T

hough Europe is reopening and travelers are hopping flights, there’s a much easier way to visit Belgium this summer. Why not check out the Cock & Bowl Belgian Bistro, in quaint Occoquan, a cozy restaurant for authentic Belgian beers and a traditional meal?

“Everybody tells me it’s a hidden gem in historic Occoquan,” said Albert Jaoude, owner of Cock & Bowl. “It’s an authentic place with home cooking, and our patio environment is phenomenal in the spring and summer when you’re sitting outside.”

Cock & Bowl serves up always-fresh, always-homemade European bistro specialties, as well as a selection of 60+ Belgian and Belgian-style beers that are crowd favorites. Add to that fresh, delicious Prince Edward Island blue mussels and the crispy-creamiest, fresh-cut Belgian Frites for a meal well-spent.

“It’s really a fun, energetic place,” Jaoude said. “And I select my servers because they know how to talk and entertain clients; as a guest, you want to eat the food, but you also want to feel welcomed and genuinely appreciated and special.”

Come for the Food; The Patio is a Bonus The cozy bistro has graced Occoquan for over 30 years and features a beautiful, dog-friendly, street-side, brick patio in addition to indoor dining. Guests often enjoy live French music, and the restaurant offers plentiful beer, wine, and freshly prepared food. Everything is made from scratch on the premises.

Occoquan has been the home to the Cock & Bowl for decades,

and Jaoude has been the owner for the past eight years. Originally from Lebanon, he studied and lived in several European and U.S. locations before landing in NOVA 16 years ago. While working in government, he was also employed in the food and beverage industry before buying the Cock & Bowl. For the past three years, Jaoude has been hands-on running the day-to-day operations.

Cock & Bowl: A Belgian Beer Destination

“I see guests talking to each other all the time; tables interacting with each other and it’s really fun,” Jaoude said. “It’s got a good vibe and positive energy, and people leave with a happy feeling.” Jaoude said C&B’s popular Prince Edward Island mussel bowls (there are around 12 different adaptations of the dish) may be accompanied by hand-cut pomme frites — aka French fries — and they are glorious. “They are blanched,” Jaoude said. “It’s a two-day process to get those frites to where they are.” Add to that their house-made magical sauce for the frites, and diners are delighted. For an “Amuse-Gueule” starter, Jaoude noted the shrimp croquette, house pâté, or brie and fig delight have always been favorites.

Did Someone Say Waffles? No authentic Belgian establishment could be legit without waffles…non-GMO waffles in the case of the Cock & Bowl. “They are huge,” said Jaoude. “We have eight to 10 homemade toppings. The Belgian chocolate ganache is about 65% cocoa — it’s mixed in-house — we do everything in-house.” Jaoude described the indulgent waffle topping options, from Lotus Biscoff Cookie Butter to chocolate ganache to caramel to pecan brittles. The Belgian call them GAUFRES SUCRÉES, freshly baked Belgian waffles with your choice of homemade toppings — chocolate, maple syrup, fresh strawberries, or seasonal fruits, cookies — the list goes on and on. In addition, the restaurant offers pan-seared fried chicken and waffles with white gravy three days a week, he said, which is a very popular option. No matter what you order, Jaoude said in his restaurant, nothing has a shelf-life of more than two days. “Everything is homemade, fresh,” he said. “We have a team that works day and night to efficiently keep the kitchen up and running.”

For beer aficionados, C&B features six of the eight recognized Trappist Breweries worldwide: Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Stift Engelszell & Westmalle, in addition to: Delirium, Kasteel, St. Bernardus, Scaldis, Leffe, Lindemans, RodenBach, Cuvée des Jacobins, Triporteur, Blanche de Bruxelle, Echt Kriekenbier, Duchesse de Bourgogne, and many, many more. Connoisseurs will enjoy the vast variety of options. “There’s different kinds of beers for everybody who comes here,” Jaoude said. “When you try the beer, you just fall in love with it; it’s phenomenal.” C&B’s craft beer selection is constantly changing, though the quality of the beer stays consistent, Jaoude said. Add to that a wide selection of gourmet sodas, house-made sangria, vin chaud, local and imported ciders for a unique, delicious stopover in Belgium without needing your passport. For the wine lovers in the crowd, never fear. C&B offers an excellent, affordable French wine selection for everyone’s sipping pleasure. Jaoude said the restaurant’s Sunday-only brunch has been on hold since COVID began, as well as private chef’s tables smack dab in the middle of the kitchen for adventurous diners. He hopes both popular elements of his business can return, as diners venture out more and the related CDC and Health Department COVID guidelines relax. The bistro does not accept reservations but uses a call-ahead list to hold a table for no more than five minutes or so before you arrive during their peak hours and days. Whether you’re in the mood for a Belgian beer on the patio on a sunny afternoon or a gourmet European dinner, Cock & Bowl offers Occoquan diners intriguing, authentic options to enjoy, indoors or out. Cock & Bowl is located at 302 Poplar Alley in Occoquan. 703494-1180, info@cockandbowl.com Dawn Klavon is a journalist, author, media director and recent transplant to NOVA. Woodbridge Nonprofit Creates Mental Health Workbook By Dawn Klavon

M

ental health has gained more attention over the past two years, as the pandemic shined a bright light on anxiety, depression, and suicide. Former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst died by suicide earlier this year, bringing suicide front and center to the public eye. Now Trillium Center, a Woodbridgebased nonprofit, offers Hope Awakened, a workbook with the goal of turning the tide of suicide in America. The authors walk the walk and talk the talk: Hope Awakened was created by a courageous team of individuals affiliated with the organization, each with their own perspective as a person who has attempted and considered suicide or merely wished the pain to end. Now they are thriving and want to offer a worthwhile lifeline through sharing their experiences, to save as many lives as possible of those who may be overwhelmed and suffering silently. “I had never read or seen a peer inspired book/workbook that not only lets people know that they aren't alone and also offers different work activities that come from shared and different views,” said Robert, a member of Trillium’s team. For privacy reasons, PWL will not use last names of the book’s authors.

An Increasing Need The need is apparent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2019, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,500 people. Hope Awakened addresses common struggles

faced by those considering suicide. “Our desire was to reach even more people in Prince William,” said Trillium Center Executive Director Cynthia Dudley. “In our days of COVID, mental health challenges are on the rise, especially with symptoms of anxiety and depression.” According to the CDC, in 2020, an estimated 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide.

Tools for Growth The workbook offers help to maintain mental health, activities to build coping skills and resilience, a plan for what to do when a crisis occurs, calming techniques when anxiety begins, tools for increased self-awareness and self-determination, and a guide to being your best self. “Regardless of whether or not someone identifies as having a mental illness, these are amazing tips for life, for coping with

stress, for simply being a good person,” said A.D., a person who read Hope Awakened and chose not to give their full name. “There is certainly something for everyone within its pages.” Dudley said Trillium Center staff recognize what helped each of them out of very difficult times, and they share these valuable concepts, worksheets, activities, and stories from their experiences in the workbook. The book was designed to help people wanting to learn proven techniques during struggles or merely desiring to learn life skills. “We do a lot of good work in our community, but want to reach a greater number of people,” said Sharon, one of the book’s authors. “We could each have used a book like this, but there was nothing out there, so we decided that we needed to create one ourselves.”

resource, alleviating adults’ mental health struggles as quickly as possible. Free books are available for financially vulnerable people in Prince William by contacting Trillium Center, thanks to a generous sponsorship from Anthem Health Keepers.

Promoting Good Mental Health Trillium Center is a valuable resource in Prince William. As a private nonprofit center for adults, the center promotes, encourages, and facilitates recovery from serious mental illness. The award-winning nonprofit is a peer support organization led by staff who all have overcome personal challenges in their own lives and help people from their own lived experiences. It’s a pay-it-forward mentality with the Trillium team, who try to make a tangible difference. Dudley said Trillium Center was instrumental in the placement of the suicide prevention sign on the Occoquan bridge. The center offers mental and behavioral health support that includes educational, recreational, and supportive activities scheduled for each month. The staff of Trillium mentors and coaches people to empower them to live a meaningful life while managing the challenges of their mental illness.

“If I had this book 20 years ago, my life would look much different,” said Cynthia, one of the book’s authors. “I certainly wouldn’t have lost so many years trying to figure it all out.” To find out more about Hope Awakened or Trillium Center, contact them at 703-763-3865 or contact@trilliumcenterinc.org. Dawn Klavon is a journalist, author, media director and recent transplant to NOVA. She thrives on juggling multiple projects, discovering local hot spots, consuming blue crab and conquering sudoku puzzles. Dawn can be reached at dklavon@ princewilliamliving.com.

“To me, our center is a place where individuals, no matter where they are in their recovery journey, can begin to grow, learn, progress, and just be themselves in a welcoming environment,” Robert said. Trillium Center helps people change their lives from the dark moments of illness to becoming heroes of their own mental health recovery. “While here, people can learn to create independence and find a path where they can expand their horizons and have brighter and better days,” said Dudley. “We help to reduce the stigma of mental illness as well as reduce feelings of isolation and alienation in our stress-free, stigma-free atmosphere.” Hope Awakend is available online at store.bookbaby.com/book/ hopeawakened for $24.95. GIVING BACK (continued from page 13) (several studies cite women outnumber men in college, and school-aged girls outperform boys in most subjects on average, e.g.). Future Kings takes this crisis head-on by empowering them in and out of school.

Embracing the Unconventional The typical Future Kings students aren’t the perfect A students or the disruptive F students. Instead, they’re the young men who know they want to be somebody in life and accomplish great things; they need push and direction. “The ‘requirements’ that we have [per se] are that the students be motivated and coachable,” said Dr. King. “Our interview process is not necessarily designed just to accept the best and the brightest. It’s designed to find out: ‘Is this the type of boy who can benefit from what it is we’re trying to do?’” Queens of STEM — formerly known as STEM for Girls— is a separate Future Kings initiative that provides the same education, skill-building, and opportunities for young girls of color ages 11 to 18. According to ACT it’s no secret that there is a gender disparity in STEM, and females generally fall behind males in STEMrelated attainment. Although women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce and half of the college-educated workforce, they hold fewer than 25% of U.S. STEM jobs. Future Kings’ initiative stresses to girls of color that STEM is also possible for them; they too can excel in these fields when given the opportunities and tools to apply themselves.

The Future for Future Kings Since their first official meeting with the initial group of young men in 2010, over 500 students have successfully graduated from Future Kings. Dr. King largely credits the early success and mobilization of the nonprofit to his colleagues, namely retired army colonel Clarence Miller and Dexter Cummings. They contributed time, money, resources, and contacts to help propel Future Kings to its current status as an educational haven for boys of color. Their goal is to deliver even more STEM majors to colleges and universities through their program moving forward. As a nonprofit, donations and fundraising through events, individuals, and organizations keep them going. “The most important thing I’ve learned in my experience was that regardless of what you do in life, how much you fail or how much you succeed, you can always learn something and always do more,” said Marselles. He is currently interning with a blackowned app company cofounded by rapper Soulja Boy. Boyd and her family are profoundly grateful for Future Kings. “I think that every child, not just those interested in STEM, would benefit from a program like Future Kings… They don’t just teach the valuable skills needed to be successful. They teach them how to be productive citizens, give back, and have a heart of service instead of a heart of gain. They get to do so much and walk away with so much. It has been priceless, and [my sons] can take these skills and carry it on with them to be successful for the rest of their lives.” To sign up your children, volunteer as an instructor, donate, or find out more about Future Kings, visit www.future-kings.org or contact Dr. King directly at arik@future-kings.org. home & hearth Upgrade Your Home, Downgrade Energy Usage 7 efficient home improvement projects Courtesy of Family Features

T

he best home upgrades not only make spaces more livable and energy-efficient but are also cost-effective. Making energy-efficient improvements is a savvy way to save money on utility bills, curb energy usage and add to the house’s value. Consider a variety of home improvement projects, both big and small, that can reduce the financial burden of maintaining your home throughout the year and improve energy efficiency.

Add Insulation

A cost-effective way to save on heating and cooling bills is adding a layer of insulation in the attic where heat loss is typically greatest due to hot air rising. While many newer homes are adequately insulated, those that are several decades old (or older) may benefit from an upgrade in not only the attic, but other common problem areas where air can escape such as basements, crawl spaces, fireplaces and ductwork.

particularly southern-facing ones, can provide an additional shield from the sun’s hot rays and reduce energy costs.

Seal Doors and Windows

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Windows and doors are common culprits for energy loss. While a complete replacement of doors and windows can be pricey, adding exterior caulk and weather stripping to fill in gaps where air can escape around these openings can make a noticeable difference for a fraction of the cost. This can make it cheaper to heat and cool your home.

Install Skylights

Skylights are a cost-effective option for transforming any room in the home with natural light while also delivering energysaving benefits. For example, Sun Tunnel Skylights from Velux can be installed in as little as 90 minutes and funnel natural light from the roof through the attic and into the room below with an aesthetic that resembles recessed lighting. Customizable with six diffuser film styles to complement interior design, the skylights can make a home more energy-efficient by reducing reliance on artificial lighting. An optional daylight controller makes it easy for homeowners to adjust natural light entering a room, and a solar nightlight provides a moon-like guiding light at night. Installed with the solar nightlight, the skylights qualify for a 26% federal tax credit on solar property. For more information visit whyskylights.com/livelighter.

Add Reflective Window Film

When the sun shines through windows, it can heat up the home’s interior quickly and trigger the air conditioner to turn on. Window coverings, such as blackout curtains, can help, but adding low-e reflective window film to your windowpanes,

A programmable thermostat is an efficient way to control the climate inside your home, and those with smart technology take programming to a whole new level. Today’s smart thermostats not only let homeowners control temperatures from their smart devices while on-the-go but can also learn daily habits and adjust the temperature accordingly with no other manual adjustments necessary. In addition, some utility companies offer incentives like money back at the end of the year for installing a smart thermostat because the energy savings are so substantial.

Replace Appliances

Because appliances like refrigerators and ovens, among others, are major energy users, investing in more efficient models provides both cost and energy savings. Additionally, homes more than 15 years old could benefit from updates to the air conditioner or heater as systems 15-20 years old or older may be candidates for replacement as they’re inefficient by today’s standards.

Add Ceiling Fans

In comparison to running your air conditioner consistently, the cost of running a ceiling fan (or several) is significantly less. Particularly on days that may not require cooling the entire house completely, fans can provide a gentle breeze and circulate air in the spaces you use most often. Simply adjust the switch to the counterclockwise position to ensure it’s pushing air downward during warmer months.
