When it comes to defining YOU through YOUR style, Oakville boutique retail offers the discriminating shopper with quality merchandise and exceptional service.

A

nd if you know your brands, you also know that downtown retailers carry exclusive lines that are not available online or at the mall. So that special shop may become (or already is) more of a regular weekly outing as you get to know and value the knowledgeable fashion experts, many of whom can be found along lakeshore Road east. These store owners really are the heart and soul of the fashion marketplace in downtown Oakville. And having this shopping destination nestled amongst historic buildings and just foot-

steps from the lake, make Oakville a great day trip. Shops such as BARBette ii and Mainstream Clothiers have been in the fashion business for more than 50 years and it is success stories such as theirs that have inspired others to make this picturesque town their home. Avante has been catering to a wide age range with classic to trendy fashions for all agees for more than 10 years, and Chatsworth and Hall has been a popular destination with the latest styles in brand names for 25 years. They have inspired a generation of new di-

vas such as Diane Allison-Frost owner of Zuri Fash¬ions, emily Dobi from Vocado Boutique, Valerie Keating of Beachy Keen and Helen Walia of K. Barketti, who have, in recent years, joined the mar¬ketplace with their own brand and style of cloth¬ing in downtown Oakville. For the men, there is Burrows Clothiers, an iconic shop at towne Square that has been in business since 1976. Burrows carries some of the top brands in the world including giorgio Armani. A visit to Johnathan Quinn is always a treat. Owner Joseph Diodati is friendly and helpful and Oak ville Magazine

carries some exceptional European lines for all ages. As much as Oakville has a reputation for being expensive, a visit will surprise you. Yes, many retailers carry quality and often exclusive brands, but they also have lines and accessories that can fit almost any budget. Their strength is understanding their clientele and being able to cater to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Best of all, they love to collaborate with likeminded business owners and fashion experts to keep downtown buzzing with the latest on fashion. Avante Boutique 312 Lakeshore Road East Anna Cammerata says this season is all about colour and being bold. Colours in jeans and capris – cobalt blue, tangerine, greens. The same is true with pants, blouses and handbags. Dresses are huge this season, more so than in the past. A dress is easy for travelling and can be casual or dressed up with jewellery. Pull-on pants, leggings and capris are popular in this society of comfort, and the quality is vastly different than in the past. They are designed to fit without bagging.

BARBETTE II 349 Lakeshore Road East Liz Prescott also says spring 2013 is awash with COLOUR - bright warm orange and electric cool blues. Florals and geo¬metric patterns are seen in skinny jeans and tops/skirts. Coloured denim is stronger than ever. Beachy Keen 176 Lakeshore Road East Valerie Keating, owner of Beachy Keen, takes pride in carrying beautiful and unique swimwear that fits well and is flattering to the figure. For 2013, Valerie says vintage inspired cuts combined with modern digital prints are a strong trend. Some additional features to also look out for include one-pieces with cinched in waists, sweetheart necklines, halters and playful prints such as gingham checks and Hawaiian florals. Burrows Clothiers 200 Lakeshore Road East Ron Burrows and Blake Lennox say colour is back in men’s fashion with colourful cotton pants, jeans and half-lined linen jackets. Burrows boasts the largest selection of denim available in Oakville and, in outwear, holds exclusivity on timeless brands such as Belstaff and Stone Island. The store carries a wide selection of contemporary menswear from Hugo Boss, SAND, and Ted Baker as well as a collection of the finest European brands from around the world – Giorgio Armani, Brunello Cucinelli, Lanvin, Boglioli, ETRO, and Ports 1961, which are all exclusive to Burrows in Oakville.

mid- to high-end. His European fashions are without designer labels which make this shop truly unique and sensibly priced. “We are a one-of-akind men’s shop.” Shoes ‘N’ More 302 A Lakeshore Road East Shabir Mir notes that Shoes ’N’ More is one of Canada’s premier retailers of footwear and has been importing world-famous brands. Shoes’N’More portfolio features renowned names such as Chocolate (French), Desigual (Spain), TAMARIS (Germany) Pinot Noir (Italy), Piccadilly (Brazil) and many more. Altelier 301 Robinson Street Enzo Rubino of Atelier Salon says that his team believes in providing a unique level of quality and service, as well as to continue to educate his clientele. For 2013, hair is short with lots of layers or long with lots of movement. Chatsworth & Hall 146 Lakeshore Road East Sue Pritchard says this season’s attention is definitely focused on your bottom half. Even in ultraconservative Europe, coloured pants have become an important fashion trend. In pants, dresses and tops, bold and colourful prints are everywhere. They inject some fun, but also do a great job of camouflaging those small imperfections. While colour rules this spring, black and white continue to be the choice for formal and evening wear. K. Barketti 236 Lakeshore Road East Owner Helen Walia notes that K.Barketti is the destination for special occasion dressing for the contemporary women. Specializing in classic fashions for mother of the bride and groom, ballroom and gala gowns, guests of the wedding, prom and graduation dresses. Mainstream Clothiers 90 Reynolds Street Laura Scarfo says there is definitely not a shortage of trends this season. Citrus colours are a hot trend – vibrant orange, yellow, and lime green in clothing, and watch for it on footwear and handbags, in beautiful patent leathers. Look out for bold jewel tones in royal blue, emerald green and fuchsia and black and white prints, especially in zig zag and polka dots. Skulls, Fleur-des-lis, crosses on knits, accessories, scarves and jewellery. Johnathan Quinn 268 Lakeshore Road East Joseph Diodati of Johnathan Quinn For Men caters to a diverse crowd and offer products from

Studio PH 305 Lakeshore Road East (Lakeshore Lane) Owner Tom Ormerod says the essence of Studio PH is more than having your hair done or getting the latest trendy hair style, it is all about connecting, to share in an exchange of positive energy. For 2013 we are seeing loose sexy waves with lots of movement as well as braids such as crown and halo braids and low pony tails. Many Faces 110 Reynolds Street Michael Sabino, co-owner with Joe Giraldi of Many Faces, recently attended the L’Oreal Colour Trophy awards, and reports back that the hottest trends in hair include waves and movement for long hair and short geometric cuts. Special styling includes hair off to one side and lots of braiding. For evening styles the ’60s up-dos are all back with lots of volume on top. Many Faces also offers wand-irons for that wavy-romantic look. Shadow or Ombre colouring technique is also very big for 2013. Zuri Fashions 103 Reynolds Street Diane Allison-Frost of Zuri Fashions says she is excited about the fabulous new colours and textures arriving this spring. She said gorgeous vibrant colours include cobalt blue, soft yellows, purples mauves and many more. The fabrics are beautiful, with linens and silks that are easy to wear and very flattering for all shapes. Colourful pants are a hot trend and Zuri has a fun selection in various colours and styles, something for everyone. OM

Jean Ockerse continues to amaze staff and customers – even at 90 At 90 years young, Jean Ockerse still makes it a routine to volunteer every Friday afternoon at By Consignment in downtown Oakville. She loves fashion and she loves people – and being around both keeps her active and filled with purpose. So, on a sunny Friday afternoon Oakville Magazine dropped into the consignment store, one of three in the downtown core, to get her secret to a long and productive life.

Jean with shop girls Julia, Jesse and Georgina.

S

taying active and being around young people are key, Jean says. Keeping one’s mind sharp and having purpose in life will carry you a long way, even when the body starts failing you, she adds. Jean is slowing down a bit and the body’s aches and pains are little worse, but she continues to enjoy helping customers and they enjoy seeing her, says store owner Sandi Hicks. “Jean is an amazing woman. She has been volunteering here for three years and the staff absolutely adores her.” The feeling is mutual, Jean claims, adding that what she has experienced at By Consignment is “sisterhood” with the staff and the regular customers alike. These friends have become extended 12

family, she says warmly. Jean truly is one of those rare people who have a zest and love for life that is contagious, a positive attitude and a kind soul – all of which have clearly kept her young at heart. Staff at By Consignment recently hosted a

birthday celebration at the store to mark this remarkable milestone for a very special lady. With three consignment stores in downtown Oakville (Second Chance and Closet 112 are the other two), shopping is a true treasure hunt. All three resell fabulous pre-owned designer clothing including shoes and boots, handbags, jewellery and accessories. By Consignment, much to Jean’s enjoyment, also specializes in vintage women’s fashions from the ’20s and ’70s. All three stores carefully handpick the clothes they will carry, ensuring top quality wear and accessories. So next time you plan a trip to this consignment destination, drop into By Consignment and say hello to Jean – on a Friday afternoon of course. OT

What is Your Financial Future? Clarity for investors on the hunt for income

Canadians invest for the future. Setting money aside is a strategy to ensure the lifestyle you’re enjoying today will last throughout your years – especially during retirement. And those years are stretching: a Canadian who reaches 65 now has a 50 percent chance of hosting a 90th birthday party. Given this longer life expectancy, investors are looking for income-yielding investments for cash flow and to protect their principal capital. Smart Income is a powerful investment platform based on two core ideas: quality and suitability.

nvestor demand for income is driven by demographics, deleveraging and de-risking,” says James Price, Director of Fixed Income with Macquarie Private Wealth. “We’re getting older. We’re paying off our debt. And we’re getting more conservative. That’s why the appetite for income is so strong—and why Macquarie has become the expert in understanding these investments.” A white paper by Macquarie Private Wealth reveals that focusing solely on yield is a trap to avoid. In a study, the firm grouped the top segment of the market each year into three baskets: highest yield, highest earnings growth and highest dividend per share growth. By measuring the total return for these baskets, the research found that seeking high dividend growth was the most successful strategy on both

an absolute and risk-adjusted basis. The highest-yield seeking strategy didn’t fare as well and was punished more often than the other two. “Not all income strategies are created equal,” James explains. “So we created Smart Income to help our clients find the right income options.” Smart Income is a powerful investment platform based on two core ideas: quality and suitability. Through rigorous due diligence and a customized tool to assess client suitability, Smart Income offers Macquarie advisors and their clients a prudent approach to navigating the ever-expanding sea of income options. Find inspiration for 2013 with the latest trends

C

arol Vesters of Swiss Interiors in downtown Oakville says vibrant oranges, reds, teals and greens as well as stripes, paisleys and florals in cushions, accent furniture and accessories are hugely popular this year. A neutral colour for main pieces of furniture is still recommended since a well-made, quality sofa will last years and live through many trends. But is the smaller details that will make a difference. Cushions and accents are the items that are affordable and can be replaced, but can have an enormous impact on a room. Dashes of colour here and there create a mood that can be fun, somber or comfy – it all depends on your desire. This year, it’s all about fun in colour and patterns,” Carol advises. Patterns that pack a punch “No one wants a house that lacks personality,” says HGTV designer Taniya Nayak. “The easiest way to infuse your style - while being on-trend - is with an impactful pattern.” According to Taniya, there are a few prints to be on the lookout for in 2013:

• Chevron: a bold, dramatic, V-shaped pattern • Geometrics: graphic, colourful shapes, delivering a vintage-modern look and feel • Ombre: subtle colour gradation of similar shades that’s extremely versatile • Ikat: tribal, swirls and diamonds reminiscent of tie-dye • Moroccan: culturally-inspired, timeless and exotic motifs When using bold patterns, it’s best to find the right pairing of both the colour and the print to not overwhelm your space. If you’re looking to use bright colors, incorporate the patterns onto one accent wall or window treatments. If you’re using neutral hues, try using a pattern on a larger scale, around the entire room or even a piece of furniture. “You don’t want the elements of a space to fight each other,” advises Taniya. “Considering the colour, scale and intensity of any pattern in relationship to the rest of your decor will leave you with a finished space that is perfect for 2013 and beyond.”

This year is all about colour and patterns. In fashion and home décor, florals, stripes, bright colours are all the rage for 2013. 18

Oak ville Magazine

Mixing up materials “The key to updating your home with the latest trends is finding a balance,” says Taniya. “It’s all about making it personal and adding elements that fit your lifestyle and design personality, without breaking the bank.” One great way to make a big impact on a small budget is to mix materials, creating a blend of polished and raw in a room. “The rustic look will be extremely popular in

homes in 2013, as it’s elegant and comfortable,” adds Taniya. “It provides a feeling of richness and warmth, while still being comfortable to actually live in the space.” A great material for achieving the industrial and modern look is reclaimed wood. From frames, to furniture, this aged, repurposed wood can bring richness and a dose of style to any space. Mixing materials can also mean utilizing different finishes throughout a room. In the kitchen, using contrasting materials makes your space look personalized. Try a mix of wood and painted finishes for a more layered and collected feel. By resisting the urge to perfectly match every piece, you’ll have a space that looks current and works nicely together. Finishing touches “The key to incorporating any trend is to make sure it accurately represents your style,” adds Taniya. “The finishing touches are the final way to infuse personality into your updated space.” Whether it’s utilizing accents like pillows, throws and frames in your favourite colours, or a rug that reminds you of a beloved piece of clothing, your home will truly come to life when it depicts who you are in its designs. OM

Bringing Indoors Outdoors Complete your backyard party with the right table setting

T

he backyard is becoming an ever-important part of our living space, says store manager Carol Lacher of To Set A Table in downtown Oakville. Homeowners are making significant investments with full outdoor kitchens, sitting areas with quality furniture, fireplaces, stone patios and professionally designed gardens. The reason for investing so much in outside dinnerware is, in part, our tendency to spend more time at home, to entertain more at home and wanting to make our surroundings as comfortable as possible. With more extensive use comes the desire to invest in better quality furniture, accessories, lighting, sound systems and everything else that is needed to create an idyllic setting. Now that you have purchased top quality furniture, structures and materials, does it make sense to set the dining table with vinyl tablecloth and plastic plates, cutlery and glasses? “Consumers are looking for classier looking table settings,” Carol advises, adding that by bringing indoors outdoors, consumers still want to entertain in style. For plates and dishes, Carol points to the colourful Le Cadeaux brand that is melamine but looks like porcelain. Polycarbonate glasses by Strahl glisten like glass, but are dishwasher safe and will not craze or dull as acrylic glasses will over time. Choose linen napkins, or go with paper napkins that feel like linen. “Whether you want to simply put together a colourful summer table or choose a theme such as French or Italian, the bottom line is homeowners want to set a nice table – something with quality and style,” Carol says. Culinary Treat Discover dining for all occasions By Suzy gOdefrOy

Tantalize your tastebuds with some of the best dining in Ontario right here in the quaint and historic Town of Oakville. Boasting more than 200 restaurants, there is no shortage of culinary talent – many of which are award-winners. Coffee shops and cafes abound in this picturesque town, but it is the full restaurant experience that truly sets Oakville apart from other communities. Following is just a snapshot of what you will find here. Downtown oakville www.oakvilledowntown.com Historic downtown Oakville offers the discriminating diner an incredible array of options from casual to fine dining with over 50 restaurants in a six-block area. Hotspots in downtown include Paradiso Restaurant at Lakeshore and Navy, serving up Mediterranean where “Dinner is the Show” and it is not surprising that many people complement a night out at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts with Paradiso. Paradiso is celebrating its 20th anniversary, which is quite a milestone and a testament to the 20

Oak ville Magazine

reputation the restaurant has built over the years. Paradiso has also just added in Live JAZZ in the winebar from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. featuring the Luke Paron Trio. A visit to Jonathans Restaurant of Oakville, Ristorante Julia and Oliver’s Restaurants are also on Oakville Magazine’s top 10 list. All three are established and have put the downtown Oakville shopping district on the map as one of the best dining destinations in the GTA. More recent and scrumptious additions include Maluca Wine Bar & Restaurant, Seasons, 7 Pizzeria Entotec, Piazza Bistro, and De Stefano’s Ristorante.

For the day tripper coming in for an afternoon of shopping we recommend a visit to The Crepe Kitchen on Dunn Street, where you will meet owners Ana and Eduardo Siles, who know what hard work means. Being in the business for over four years, this hotspot is part of the charm of downtown and a great complement to the boutique retail culture on Lakeshore Road East. Oakville Magazine attests to the fact that the crepes are incredible, and with over 30 different crepes to choose from, you will certainly be back for more. Enjoy a little French flair on their quaint sidewalk patio. They were also a finalist for

Restaurant of the Year at the Oakville Awards for Business Excellence in March (Cucci Ristorante in Bronte won), so it’s not just us who think their crepes are amazing. Kerr www.kerrvillage.com Travelley westbound along Lakeshore and north on Kerr, you will discover the restaurants of Kerr Village, featuring a fusion of culinary talent. This cultural extravaganza includes Portuguese, Polish, Asian, Greek, Italian, Thai, Japanese, Middle Eastern and Californian cuisine. Here, you will find casual to fine dining at AGABI Restaurant, The Gingerman Social Eatery, JAC’s Bistro, Kenki Sushi, Pasquale’s Trattoria and Tokyo Bay to a more relaxed atmosphere at Stoney’s Bread Company, Fantastico Pizza, The Kerr Street Cafe, Golden Coast Tea Club, Ranee’s Roti, Souvlaki Hut and Lusitania Bakery and Cafe. Whatever style or craving you are sporting, culinary is never compromised in Kerr Village. The culinary enticement happens when you stop and shop. You can sample olive oils and balsamic vinegars from around the world. If you’re too busy to cook, you can check out local specialty food shops and take home a gourmazing dinner –

Eduardo and Ana Siles.

especially from the many food purveyors on Kerr who serve up Portuguese, Polish, and Italian cuisine like no tomorrow. For the busy executive let Boffo’s do all of your cooking and if you love Italian gelato be sure to visit the Chocolate Alphabet and Casa del Gelato. Nightlife on Kerr includes live music at Shakers, Less than Level and Moonshine Café.

Bronte www.brontevillage.net In beautiful Bronte, a fishing village on the west side of Oakville, be sure to try Plank Restobar, Cucci Ristorante, Compass Lakeside Grill & Lounge, La Parisene Creperie, Alhambra, Monfort by the Lake, O Sushi and Thai Senses. Bronte is one of the most romantic areas in Oakville and Oakville Magazine highly recommends Cucci, an Italian Restaurant nestled on Jones Street just north of Lakeshore Road West. Fine wine and tantalizing culinary, you will be transported to Italy within minutes as the ambience, music and most welcoming hosts make your visit to Cucci a memorable one. In fact, Cucci recently won Restaurant of the Year at the Oakville Awards for Business Excellence in March. Top your evening off with a night cap at nearby Plank Restobar, and of course be sure to take a walk along the gorgeous Bronte Harbour promenade. Another favourite is Compass Restaurant where one can enjoy fine Italian dining on Lake Ontario. Be seduced by the stylish modern décor of Compass and be enticed with Oakville’s newest waterfront dining. For a more casual atmosphere enjoy the Firehall Cool Bar and Hot Grill, CJ’s Café, and Taste of Colombia Fair Trade Coffee. OM

ARBETTE II just celebrated 55 years of fashion in downtown Oakville. Started by two young mothers, Barb (Barbara) and Betsy (Elizabeth), this fashionable boutique was originally a maternity store called Sign of the Stork. Eventually the store moved into casual/sporty wear and the name changed to BARBETTE. Betsy retired years ago, and when Barb retired in 2004, her daughter Maralee Larsen partnered with her good friend Liz Prescott to became the new faces behind BARBETTE II. Where does fate come in? Maralee’s given first name is Barbara, and Liz, of course, is short for Elizabeth. The Roman numeral II represents BARBETTE’S second time around for “Barb” and “Betsy.” OM
