In Napa, wine has been elevated to an art form practiced by passionate artisanal winemakers who create the finest possible wines, often in extremely limited quantities. Most of these artisanal Napa wines are unavailable to wine lovers in Canada because of restrictive government import policies and import taxes that are among the highest in the world. California is one of the world’s largest wine producing regions. However, the wine produced in the Napa Valley represents only 5% of this total production. Almost all of the more than 3,000 wineries licensed in California are classified as “small” or “limited production”, often making only a few thousand cases of wine per year. HEIGHTENED PROFILE The challenge for many businesses today is to increase and/or maintain a heightened profile. The key is to stand out in the crowd, to be accepted as a viable alternative and to build on the services or characteristics of your business that differentiate you in the marketplace. The principals of Q4 Communications have assisted

SB Partners – was a modest sized accounting firm competing with newer, more aggressive firms. The firm was called Scott Batenchuk Accountants, but Mr. Scott and Mr. Batenchuk were long gone. In their place were some partners and some staff. We rebranded them as SB Partners, maintaining some history but also giving them a new, more dynamic, contemporary look. A stylized scribble as part of the logo gave them a distinctive symbol that could be used on collateral and giveaways such as hats, golf shirts etc. We also took a service that they had developed into a process, packaged it and gave it a brand all on its own. They weren’t the only accounting firms that were helping firms manage opportunities and reduce exposure, but they were the first to put this service into a program – MORE – and promote it to clients. Other accounting firms were soon buying the program from them.

Byrne Engineering – orebranded, new logo and communications strategy to key audience. The company’s business double in three years. Byrne not only increased its existing business, but broke into the mining sector – something it had been thinking about for years. It also opened a North Bay office to service its new mining clients. Byrne’s growth and reputation caught the attention of Ameresco Canada, which bought the company last year to create Ameresco Consulting. The Byrne principals received attractive packages and remained to run the new division.

L.J. Barton Mechanical – is looking to retain us to help them with their growth objective. The company wants to grow from $20 million annually to $75 million over the next five years. Aware of our reputation for delivering successful strategies, they have asked us to formulate an action plan. The plan involves new website, video testimonials (something different in this industry), sales collateral, advertorials in trade magazines and direct mailers to key decision makers. The result will be a heightened and constant awareness of L.J. Barton and its services and capabilities among key audiences – thereby opening the door for sales staff by establishing a recognition and relationship before the sales call.

Natural Landscpae Design Inc. – a small landscape design firm with owner and two staff who he laid off every winter. Three years ago we started a rebranding, designed a new website and created Natural Landscape Magazine, which we got into Chapters and Indigo. We also arranged to have him as a regular guest on local radio and television programs such as CH Morning Live, making him a local celebrity. Today he has six full-time staff.

The Beaudry Group – while the company was satisfied with its current level of business, it recognized that it would lose ground to more aggressive competitors over the next few years. We began in the early fall to rebrand the company beginning with refining the logo, designing a new website and putting direct mail and advertising strategies in place. We had a professional photographer begin shooting some of their work (they did their own photography, but didn’t come close to matching a professional job) and shot video to post on their website (something new for the industry and a point of differentiation for Beaudry). We also greatly enhanced their social media presence. This spring was so busy they said it was to the point of being problematic – something that would require hiring additional staff. Originally we were to meet this spring to launch Phase 2, but the owners are too busy and have told us to just go ahead.

messaging Ever been cornered at a party by a person who runs on at the mouth? Then you know how important communication can be. The adage “Choose your words wisely” has never been more apropos than in marketing. Some people use a lot of words without really saying anything. We have a word for that, but we can’t use it here. What we can say is that people connect with stories…real stories told in a compelling way. Customers today are short on time and long on options so we aim for clarity, brevity and precision. But don’t be fooled into thinking that brevity equals insignificant or easy. Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher, once said, “If I had more time, I would have written you a shorter letter.” Distilling your message is challenging and most clients look forward to it about as much as a stick in the eye.
