FINALLY, THE FIFA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022 IS HERE! QH TRACKS THE GENESIS OF THE COUNTRY’S GLORIOUS HOUR

Sporting aspiration and desire know no boundaries. Qatar, a country that puts sports as a community developing pillar to help its youth prosper as a nation, has amplified this saying in an amazing manner in the last decade.

From the time Qatar set about becoming the sports hub of the region around two and half decades ago, hosting an event as big and royal as the FIFA World Cup was only a matter of time.

Just two years after hosting the biggest edition of the Asian Games in December 2006 — a two-week

spectacle that attracted more than 10,000 athletes and officials to Doha — Qatar announced at a surprise press conference held at the Diplomatic Club in March 2009 that it was joining the bid race to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

It may have come as a shock to the world but for those witnessing the growth of sports events and the presence of global sporting icons in Doha since the early 90s, it was pretty evident Qatar would not stop chasing sporting dreams.

Once Qatar, home to the world's largest indoor sports academy, joined in the bid race that also included former World Cup or Olympics hosts Australia, the US, Japan and South Korea, the countdown to FIFA decision date December 1, 2010 gained significance with each passing day following the announcement. The buzz kept on

getting bigger as global football icons like French World Cup hero Zinedine Zidane and retired stars like Gabriel Batistuta of Argentina and Cameroon's Roger Milla created their own ripples in favour of Qatar. Pledging to connect the Middle East with the western world, World Cup hopefuls Qatar also underlined its aim to completely redevelop the country that had already looked the part as a sporting host for the 2006 Asian Games.

The FIFA Inspection Team — headed by Chile Football Federation president Harold Mayne-Nicholls — landed in Qatar in September 2010. Danny Jordaan, who was the chief executive

of the organising committee for the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa, was also part of the FIFA Inspection Team that was promised Qatar would host the most compact edition of the World Cup with all match venues fitted in with a state-of-the-art cooling technology.

Come December 1, 2010, and Qatar showcased its bid file in emphatic fashion. In an impassioned appeal on behalf of football fans of the region, Her Highness HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned told FIFA's Executive Committee that the wait for the World Cup to come to the Middle East must end now. "Members of the Executive Committee, I would like to ask a question: When? When do you think is the right time for the World Cup to come to the Middle East?” HH Sheikha Moza asked FIFA's elite during Qatar’s 30-minute presentation in Zurich. “You will realise from our bid how important this World Cup is for our region. A World Cup in Qatar will send an important message to the world that after 92 years of waiting, we will finally become a recognised part of the global football family,” HH Sheikha Moza added.

“So, this takes me back to my original question," HH Sheikha Moza said. "When do you think is the right time for

the World Cup to come to the Middle East? That, ladies and gentlemen, time has come. The time is now,” HH Sheikha Moza, dressed in Qatar’s national colour maroon, added in front of an audience that included FIFA President, former US president Bill Clinton and Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman.

“Based on my feelings not just as a mother of my own children but as a mother for an entire generation of youth across the Middle East, for us football isn't just a game. It is a sport for our time, anytime. In 2022, more than half of the population of the region will be under 25 and the World Cup here will have a different impact here than anywhere in the world. elusive dream. You can help the youth of the region accomplish a lot,” she said.

The very next day — December 2, 2010 — Qatar upstaged rivals US, Korea, Japan and Australia and won the rights to host the region's first FIFA World Cup. Led by its dynamic and charismatic young chairman HE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar won 14 votes against 8 won by the United States for an absolute majority in the final round of the historic FIFA voting that took place in Zurich. Fighting back tears of joy, Sheikh Mohammed said in Zurich: "I take this opportunity to say thank you to the football body for believing in change, believing in us. I assure you that the Middle East will make you proud. Qatar will make FIFA proud in 2022. I can assure you we will host the best-ever World Cup."

Without wasting time, Qatar got down to redeveloping the entire country by unveiling the new Hamad International Airport, linking every street and city with new roadworks, laying a brand new metro network and building from scratch seven new stadiums including the iconic Lusail Stadium — with a capacity of 80,000 seats — that will host the final of the 2022 FIFA World

Cup on Qatar's National Day falling on December 18, 2022.

Qatar's oldest sporting venue built in 1976 — the Khalifa International Stadium also underwent massive renovation which was completed five years ahead of schedule in 2017. Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah was completed and commissioned two years later while the Education City Stadium and Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium were put to match use in 2020.

Soon afterwards Stadium 974, Al Thumama Stadium and Al Bayt Stadium — which will host the Opening Match with a capacity of 60,000 seats — were all used for matches of the FIFA Arab Cup — a trial event to the main showpiece that was held in December 2021.

Except for Lusail Stadium and the Khalifa International Stadium, all other venues will have their 40,000-capacity cut to half after the event with removable chairs shipped to developing countries.

More than 130,000 hotel rooms have been made available for the visiting fans from around the world. Organisers have guaranteed that an additional 70,000 room nights have been made available through the Qatar Accommodation Agency portal. Cruise ships have been commissioned

SPORTS- QFA STORY 16 | QH | November 2022
QH traces the country’s stunning rise as Asian champions which is always a motivating factor for the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2022

In January 2019, Qatar were ranked 93 on the FIFA computer, just three years away from their FIFA World Cup debut on home soil. A month later, Qatar jumped a massive 38 places to be ranked an impressive 55 in the world thanks largely to its spectacular AFC Asian Cup title triumph in the UAE.

Coached by Felix Sanchez – a former Barcelona colt coach – Qatar's title win in the UAE against Asia's best was not just a battle against the odds but their series of wins was full of heroism on the field of play. Just as it was stunning, the title-winning run by the young Qatar squad was not a flash in the pan. It was the culmination of astute planning by Qatar Football Association and their resourceful mechanism that delivered stunning results.

This scenario is worth studying: Qatar with a player pool of barely 5000 footballers of all ages and yet it emerged Asian Cup champions in 2019. Putting together a fiercely contested football league was one of the moves that brought about positive results for the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts.

A quick scan from the past shows Xavi, the Barcelona giant, Andre Ayew, the Ghanaian national team captain, French legendary defender Marcel Desailly, Belgian international Toby Alderweireld, star Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder, top scorer at the 2014

FIFA World Cup James Rodriquez of Colombia, Brazilian freekick specialist Juninho, popular coach of the modern era Pep Guardiola, Diego Maradona's contemporary Gabriel Batistuta of Argentina, Spanish legend Raul Gonzalez, Dutch hero Frank de Boer and Javi Martinez are some of the names who have played in the Qatar Stars League, the country's premier football league.

With 12 clubs namely Al Sadd, Al Gharafa, Al Rayyan, Al Ahli, Al Arabi, Al Duhail, Al Shamal, Umm Salal, Al Gharafa, Qatar SC, Al Sailiyah and Al Wakrah battling for honours in the QSL every season, the regular football season has become a good training ground for national team players like Akram, Afif, Hasan Al Haydos, Almoez Ali, Albdelkarim Hasan, Bassam Al Rawi, Assim Madibo and Saad Al Sheeb. All the these players were part of the Asian Cup squad that lifted the trophy in 2019 under captain Hassan Al Haydos and coach Sanchez.

Qatar's Spanish coach – 45 – has spent more than a decade in the country having started with the U-20 squad that won the 2014 AFC Asian Cup.

By beating North Korea in the final, Qatar joined the beaten finalists, hosts Myanmar and Uzbekistan as AFC qualifiers for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand.

Always, it is the coach who gets credit but there are a lot of people working in my team. We have a nice group of people who are very professional and they have a lot of knowledge.

Qatar coach Felix Sanchez

Sanchez, fully backed by QFA and the Aspire Academy, nurtured most of the young members in the U-20 squad in Myanmar and groomed them for Qatar's brightest moment under the sun when they won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. After assuming charge of the senior side in 2017, Sanchez set about preparing his young team for bigger challenges.

After landing in the UAE for the historic AFC Asian Cup, Qatar posted wins against Lebanon (2-0), North Korea (6-0), Saudi Arabia (2-0), Iraq (1-0), South Korea (1-0), the UAE (40, semifinals) and Japan (3-1, final) to become champions in the most spectacular fashion. Almoez Ali scored 9 goals in the tournament and was declared Most Valuable Player of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. Despite playing the most important role in the careers of his young Qatari squad, Sanchez refuses to take all credit for assisting Qatar in winning the 2019 Asian Cup.

“Always, it is the coach who gets credit but there are a lot of people working in my team. We have a nice group of people who are very professional and they have a lot of

knowledge. We have assistant coaches, we have fitness trainers, goalkeeping coaches and the administrative staff, the team manager. They provide what we need to be at our best,” Sanchez says in an interview. Sanchez's Qatar journey started at the Doha-based Aspire Academy, the world's biggest indoor sports facility where Qatar grooms its future sports stars like track and field giant Mutaz Barshim, who has gold medals in high jump IAAF World Athletics Championships and Olympic Games.

“In 2006, I joined Aspire Academy for age group national teams. It was a long process (to start with the juniors) and it is a big honour to have this kind of process. To reach the senior team is not usual in football. When I arrived in Qatar, the Aspire Academy had just begun running operations and it was a big project when I joined the technical staff. I worked on the set up then but it is different now. Things are better. I will not say it was by chance. The way they run things at U-16 or U-17, the way we were playing events. Everything was and is running well,” Sanchez recalls.

“In my career it is obvious that I would not be here if I had not joined Aspire Academy. Now I am coaching the senior team. At Aspire, there are many people from many countries. Everybody contributed. I have been coaching this group since they were 15 or 16 years of age. With some players I have been working since 2008 or 2009. They have been growing from different stages. I have supported and helped them in their development. The players

know their way and the way we want to train. That gives us the advantage. At the same time, the most important relationship is with the game on the field. A lot of them play together (at clubs). That helps. They have trained together for many years. They play together at the clubs. I don’t know if they see me as a father or a brother. It has been a long time. At the end of the day, they are football players. The confidence is there. They know who they are and what the country wants. They have a better atmosphere,” he adds.

In between guiding his team to AFC Asian Cup glory in 2019, Sanchez saw his boys reach the semifinals of CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States last year. After taking over the team when it was ranked in the 90s to its current spot at 50, Sanchez feels the gap is narrowing between his side and that of the best ones in the world. After spending months away in training across Europe and playing a series of friendlies this past summer, Sanchez wants Qatari fans to rally behind the squad set to make its debut in the game's showpiece tournament on November 20 in a game against Ecuador. Senegal and The Netherlands are the two others teams in Qatar's group.

"I think it will be a big occasion for the country. I hope people will enjoy the World Cup in Qatar. First time Qatar will

play in the World Cup and it will be at home, so I think it’s unique. People have to enjoy these moments and I hope they will support us and cheer for the team and players. The players are going to appreciate that and give it their all to make the fans happy," Sanchez says in the build-up to the FIFA World Cup.

"Every day we were preparing during the training camp, we were constantly trying to improve and hopefully we’re going to have a good last few days

of preparation before the World Cup starts. And yes, hopefully we’re going to be at our best level on November 20. In 2019, it was very difficult to think that Qatar could win the Asian Cup and we won it.

Obviously, I’m not talking about Qatar winning the World Cup, but competing at a good level against those three teams is our challenge. Then this is football, and you never know what can happen.” n

FLASHBACK: 2019 AFC ASIAN CUP FINAL

Qatar 3 Japan 1 Zayed Sports City Stadium, Abu Dhabi

The Qataris opened the scoring in spectacular fashion. The tournament’s leading assist-maker Akram Afif (ten assists) and goalscorer Almoez Ali (nine goals) fittingly combined in what ended with an audacious bicycle kick converted by the 22-year-old striker. Abdelaziz Hatim doubled Qatar’s lead with his second goal at UAE 2019, again assisted by Afif, about a quarter-of-anhour later with a superb, driven shot outside the penalty area that found the top corner. Japan were rattled and Qatar nearly found a third before half-time, with only the woodwork denying captain Hasan Al Haydos.

Ten minutes after half-time, Afif found Hatim again with an incisive pass in the penalty area after a counter attack, but the midfielder failed to convert the chance and skied his effort well over the crossbar. Takumi Minamino brought Japan back to within one goal with a chipped finish over Saad Al Sheeb following some neat and incisive passing from the Samurai Blue in Qatar’s penalty area.

Having put forth an incredible ten assists throughout UAE 2019, Afif then saved his first goal for the best possible moment as he converted from the penalty spot after Japan captain Maya Yoshida was adjudged to handle the ball in the area. The Samurai Blue ran out of time to get back into the game following a late miss from Yoshida and Qatar sealed a first-ever Asian Cup championship, winning in their inaugural appearance in the tournament decider.

WHAT THEY SAID

DID YOU KNOW?

• Qatar are the ninth different nation to win the Asian Cup

• Japan had won all four of their previous Asian Cup final appearances before losing to Qatar

• Minamino's goal was the first conceded by Qatar at UAE 2019 – they had set a tournament record of recording six consecutive clean sheets at an Asian Cup

"I have no words. We beat an outstanding, outstanding team. I think in the first half we played very well, in the second half we had to defend a lot because they obviously want to win the title as well. It was a very tough game. We suffered and we know how to suffer. I’m very happy for the players and all the people in Qatar who supported us from the beginning. Very well deserved, very happy, no words." Qatar head coach Felix Sanchez.

Qatar banks on Asian Cup heroes

QH TAKES A LOOK AT THE HOST NATION’S FIFA WORLD CUP DEBUT

Long-serving coach Felix Sanchez on November 11 announced a strong 26-man FIFA World Cup squad that mainly consists of players who featured prominently in their victorious Asian Cup title triumph in 2019.

Sanchez, who has been with the Qatar national squad for more than four years, included feared goalpoachers Almoez Ali and Akram Afif, two of the heroes who guided Qatar to their historic Asian Cup triumph in the UAE.

Ali, the Most Valuable Player from the 2019 Asian Cup, and Afif are expected to lead the team on their historic World Cup debut match on November 20 when the hosts take on Ecuador at the imposing Al Bayt Stadium. Hosts Qatar are in Group A alongside Ecuador, Senegal and The Netherlands.

Ali, who plays for Qatar Stars League (QSL) side Al Duhail, has scored a staggering 42 goals in just 85 matches for the Qatari national team. He was the highest scorer of the 2019 Asian Cup

Defender Pedro Miguel, midfielder Bassam Al Rawi and goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb will provide strength and experience when Qatar take on Ecuador (Nov 20), Senegal (Nov 25) and The Netherlands (Nov 29) in their Group A clashes.

In the last four years, Sanchez has kept his players extremely busy with the Qatar side featuring in Copa America and taking part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup where they played the semi-finals last year.

A series of friendlies in the last one year have kept the players in match practice ahead of what will be their debut at the game's showpiece event.

Qatar's young World Cup squad holds promise. Most of the current national team players have been under the mentorship of Sanchez – who guided Qatar to 2014 AFC Asian Cup U-20 glory in Myanmar where they beat North Korea in the final – for almost eight years. Since then, Sanchez has single handedly shaped the careers of star players of the AFC Asian Cup triumph in 2019. n

PADEL world's fastest growing sport takes Qatar by storm

QH INTERVIEWS PADEL IN DEPUTY GM JOHAN MADARASZ ON THE SPORT AND HOW YOU, TOO, CAN FOLLOW THE FAD

PADEL- INTERVIEW
November 2022 | QH | 33

Qatar, the unparalleled sporting hub of the Middle East, is going crazy about Padel — the fastest growing sport in the world. Thanks largely to the Al Kuwari brothers Mohammed Saadon, Khalid and Abdul Aziz, Padel has taken the country by storm after first engaging fans in Doha half a decade ago. Right now, approximately 100,000 amateur and professional pairs are playing the sport across the country.

Johan, Deputy General Manager of Padel IN, the club founded by the Al Kuwari brothers, talks at length about the popularity of Padel, a sport played with a smaller racket on court that is also smaller than a regular tennis court.

Here are excerpts from a Q&A session:

How do you see the growth of Padel in Qatar in such a short span?

Padel is the fastest growing sports on the planet and it is not an exception in Qatar. The vision of Padel IN is to provide the best environment and facilities for the community here in Qatar to play Padel. Padel IN is providing exclusively indoors courts along with the best professional equipment. Padel IN started with one club, including four indoor courts in 2019. Today, Padel IN has four clubs in Qatar with a total of 28 indoors courts. We opened the flagship club at Aspire in July 2021 with 10 courts with a dedicated club for ladies with three courts. We can predict that the sport will continue growing day by day with new players joining the community.

34 | QH | November 2022 PADEL - INTERVIEW

Roughly how many players are playing the sport right now and how many courts are available to the public?

Padel IN is offering four clubs across Qatar with a total of 28 indoor courts. We are estimating that more than 100,000 people play or played Padel during the last 2 years in Qatar.

What is so special about Padel IN?

The vision Padel IN is “By the players for the players”. Padel IN is not providing only courts to rent. Padel IN created the Padel IN Academy that provides after school camps for the young generation. It is an important pillar of Padel IN vision to train the youth so that they can one day represent Qatar on the international circuit. Padel IN is also providing coach lessons for individuals and groups.

You recently got awarded the World Guiness Record for the largest Padel championship?

Padel IN created the Padel IN Tour which includes a series of competition across the year. Recently, Padel IN was awarded the Largest Padel Championship by the Guinness World Record with 778 Players participating in the tournament Qatar Rail Open. It is, of course, a great achievement and will help to highlight Qatar as an important place in the world for Padel.

What are the next steps for Padel IN?

Padel IN has already expanded across the Middle East with one club in Kuwait and another two in Saudi Arabia. The vision is to continue to expand our Padel community in the Gulf region and abroad, and create links between the players of each countries.

For the benefit of the uninitiated, how to start playing Padel IN?

Padel IN club courts and coaching lessons are available on the app Playtomic. You can choose your preferred club, time and coaches. You can also register in our tournaments on www.padelintour.com n

The need for a healthy lifestyle is imperative to maintain fitness. The need for doing so is even more pronounced given the general tendency to “live for the day” which is all very well in terms of enjoying life but never at the cost of one’s health. In a region that is known to face health issues like obesity and diabetes for lack of a fitness regime, it is all the more important to not waste any more time to take charge of one’s health. Qatar Happening talked to the movers-and-shakers of Base Sports, a fitness studio in West Bay, for a ringside view on this important subject.

QH TALKS TO FITNESS OWNERS AT BASE SPORTS TO KNOW WHICH WAY IS THE WIND BLOWING AND HOW BEST TO MOTIVATE PEOPLE TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

What is the general level of fitness among teens or ones in their early 20s in Qatar?

Ilija: A good indication could be a look at some studies supported by MoPH a couple of years ago. General fitness and participation in physical activities among a population over 20 years of age is correlated with their previous engagement with PA (physician assistant) in earlier years. There is definitely room for improvement.

Interesting times are here with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and we hope it inspires the youth once again to celebrate sports and movement not just in front of their screens but by participating and practicing various disciplines of physical activity.

Srdjan: Numbers show we have one of the highest percentages of obesity cases in youths and adults as well. Anyhow, we are seeing improvements in attempts to overcome this issue and an increase in pedestrian-friendly areas which should have an effect on everyday lifestyle in the future.

What's the best way to encourage youngsters to adopt a healthy lifestyle through gym routines in the Middle East?

Ilija: Leading by example will always go a long way. Besides making physical activity more attractive through the

media, the culture of physical activity should be fostered at home as well as in schools.

We all have a role to play. To educate instead of falling for short-lived trends would be a great choice for starters.

Srdjan: Increase in frequency and volume of physical education in primary and secondary schools would be a way to go, too. Physical activity is definitely underestimated in its ability to prevent a high number of chronic diseases.

Is obesity a serious concern among youngsters in the Middle East? What's the best way to deal with the issue?

Srdjan: Yes, it is. To educate through formal and informal channels and by giving more attention to other aspects and deeper understanding of physical activity and its impact on overall wellbeing.

Are we on the way to a gym culture that would suggest fitness is something residents take seriously?

Ilija: The gym culture is on the rise. Residents have plenty of options in choosing the activation that suits their needs. The biggest challenge

is distinguishing ‘wants’ from ‘needs’ and planning the course of action accordingly. Curiosity is present and it will inevitably, lead to more conscious choices.

There are also smaller groups of enthusiasts that are taking it a step further and doing their best to influence and showcase various approaches to physical activity and lifestyle choices.

What's the number of gyms in the country?

There is definitely a huge increase in the number of gyms available on the market.

One of them is Base. You should check us out!

Power, pleasure at the heart of top luxury SUV MOTORING

Aston Martin’s new DBX707 – the world’s most powerful luxury SUV – has created a buzz in the Qatari market after its stellar launch earlier this year at the state-of-the-art Aston Martin showroom in Alfardan Towers, West Bay.

The DBX707 has every area mapped out to boost performance, intensify driving pleasure and amplify on-road presence. It comes with a unique combination of blistering performance, supreme dynamics, unmistakable style and absolute luxury.

Starting with the powertrain, DBX’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine now features ball bearing turbochargers and a bespoke engine calibration to liberate more power and torque.

Also new to Aston Martin’s flagship high performance SUV is a 9-speed ‘wet clutch’ automatic transmission. Capable of managing much increased torque loadings compared with a regular torque converter automatic, this high-performance transmission allows output of the 4.0-litre V8 to be lifted to an immense 707PS and 900Nm, increases of 157PS and 200Nm over the DBX (V8).

Integral to the DBX707’s suite of performance enhancements is the standard fitment of Carbon Ceramic Brakes. Wheels and tyres are 22in as standard (in a choice of Sport and Ribbon designs), with an optional 23in alloy wheel offered in a choice of textured black or satin black with diamond turned highlights.

The adoption of a 23in wheel also brings dynamic benefits, with the larger diameter tyre offering improved steering response, better primary body control and improved lap times. Key to the DBX707’s exceptional handling is its air suspension system. It features a dedicated chassis tune optimised to its uncompromising demands and objectives.

In the spirit of placing the driver in control DBX707 introduces a revised lower console containing new drive mode selection switches. Now, rather than having to enter a sub-menu within the infotainment system, the driver has immediate fingertip control of key dynamic modes and setting.

In keeping with its extensive

engineering upgrades the exterior and interior of the DBX707 have received an equally thorough design makeover. The result is spectacular – overtly sporting but with the style and attention to detail for which Aston Martin is rightly celebrated. Rear-end treatment is just as dramatic. Enhancing both aesthetic form and aerodynamic function a new lip spoiler has been added to the roof wing to reduce lift and increase high speed stability, with a significantly enlarged twin rear diffuser rising to meet the new large diameter quad exhaust system.

Finished in satin black to compliment the gloss black treatment of the diffuser this new exhaust has been tuned to deliver a unique sound signature. Completing the rear-end changes a new rear bumper complete with integrated quarter panel vents accentuate the DBX707’s muscular physique.

the headrest, a contrast stripe down the centre of the seat and perforation pattern in the seat back and base cushion.

As on the exterior, the DBX707’s interior features a dark chrome finish to switchgear as standard. Bright chrome and carbon fibre can be specified as an option. Piano Black veneer is standard with carbon fibre or bronze metal mesh veneer finishes available as an option.

As the flagship model in the DBX range, the DBX707 has scooped a host of accolades. These include ‘Best Luxury SUV’ at the GQ Car Awards, Top Gear’s ‘Super SUV of the Year’ award and back-to-back wins in PR Arabia National Auto Award ‘Best Super Luxury SUV’ category.

Inside or out, the engineering team behind the SUV has transformed the DBX707 into something extraordinary, with a comprehensive suite of meticulous engineering solutions

The sporting theme continues inside with sport seats fitted as standard (comfort seats are available as a nocost option). All seat options come with 16-way electric adjustment plus heating in front and rear as standard. There are three choices of interior environments –standard-fit Accelerate, which features a mix of leather and Alcantara®, as well as the optional Inspire – Comfort and Inspire Sport, which features full Semi-Aniline leather complete with embroidered Aston Martin wings on

covering the engine, transmission, suspension and brakes. In a nutshell, it’s a complete re-boot of each and every dynamic system that has transformed DB707 into the fastest and most powerful luxury SUV on the planet.

For customers in Qatar looking to further enhance the exclusive nature of DBX707 and create something truly unique, Alfardan Luxury Motors’ expert team is available to support with the ultimate in personalisation, through the ‘Q by Aston Martin’ programme. n

ASHRAF ABU ISSA, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, ABU ISSA HOLDING

AbuIssa Holding is a global diversified company with a network of production and commercial branches worldwide.

A family owned business, AbuIssa Holding operates in nine countries with more than 4,000 dedicated employees, working towards market expansion and global presence.

Representing a network of market leading businesses, AbuIssa Holding is positioned as one of the most diverse and progressive establishments in Qatar. With a portfolio that supplies the best in talent, innovation, expertise and resources, AbuIssa Holding continues to challenge the regions it operates in with its high level of expertise.

In just over four decades, Blue Salon has firmly established itself as brand of international repute in the fashion world. After starting out in 1981, Blue Salon continues to grow thanks to company's eagerness to change with the times. The future clearly looks bright for Qatar's premier retailer.

In an interview with Qatar Happening, Ashraf Abu Issa, the chairman and CEO of Abu Issa Holding, gives us a background into how he managed to turn it into a success story. Excerpts:

42 | QH | November 2022 LOCAL SPOTLIGHT - BUSINESS INTERVIEW
“I have been always inspired to create my own concept”

Since when have you launched your operations in Qatar and what has been the response so far?

My father established Blue Salon in 1981, but passed away just six years later. So by that time, I realised the huge responsibilities which came with becoming the head of the family and business at such a young age.

So I stepped into leadership and business management at the age of 19 where I was the youngest entrepreneur in Qatar. It was literally an emergency crisis management and the need of the hour, as I took the reins of the family business, while putting a hold on my studies and basketball career, taking one thing at a time.

Later on, I took over the family business with my brother Nabil. Primarily in Retail & Distribution business, the company grew to be one of the most distinguished groups with several activities and more than 100 stores in the region and more than 3,000 employees.

Retailing is a competitive business across Qatar. Abuissa Holding always stayed a step ahead of other retailers. Additionally, I have been always inspired to create my own concepts and find the gaps in the market. I generated most of my businesses from unique ideas.

Your retail shops linked with Qatar Rail would have been launched much earlier. What's been the response of the public at metro station shops?

It is a unique feature which has made travel a special experience for visitors to get in and around the city as you can find a number of shops, foods, beverage and service shops inside the metro stations, which is literally, all you need to enjoy a short or a long travel around Qatar.

How many online orders are received on a daily basis through FIFA website and what's the normal time it takes to deliver merchandise?

We are having an exceptional amount of orders and they are delivered within 24 hours.

Was it difficult to prune and select staff locally? How's their performance been so far?

Wem at Abu Issa Holdingm always strive to develop our business

strategies to better deal with the market’s ever evolving requirements as they arise, and that not only the Qatari market but the global market as well. So, the process of selecting staff follows a full cycle of picking the right qualifications to fit our position. Taking under consideration the skills, abilities, knowledge, versatility, education and experience levels.

What's the order traffic going to be like once the World Cup kicks off? How many orders a day would be handled on average?

In the past few days, we noticed 50% increase of orders. Moreover, we have high expectations but are well prepared to receive huge amounts of orders during the World Cup.

Could you please elaborate on the

20 categories of merchandise you have promised to tackle?

We will offer different official merchandise items, including ladies’ scarves, ghutra (traditional head coverings), luggage, backpacks, work bags, candles, travel accessories, cups, home textiles, bed coverings, towels, and blankets.

Monsoon Wedding people saw their own family on screen”

— Filmmaker Mira Nair tells QH as Doha braces up for the musical

44 | QH | November 2022 IN FOCUS - INTERVIEW
“In

World renowned filmmaker Mira Nair’s award winning work Monsoon Wedding is coming to a theatre near you. This time in a musical, it promises to set the stage alight like never before at Souq Waqif. Brought to you by Qatar Creates, the action gets underway on November 17 and runs until the 27th.

In a chat with Qatar Happening, Mira Nair spoke glowingly of her award-winning work, her thoughts on theatre as an art medium and the love and patronage she found bringing it to Doha. Excerpts:

Where does Monsoon Wedding figure in your personal list of favourites? Take us back to the feeling of getting a Golden Lion as the first female filmmaker?

Monsoon Wedding is an intimate family film. Initially, I thought I was making a small film on my family but then it became the biggest hit I ever made. I think it was a very proud and unexpected moment when (I received) the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival where (I) left small but became the “queen of the festival”. To see the reaction at the festival was extraordinary …had never expected it and it kept growing in millions of hearts around different countries because (I think) people saw their own family on screen or they wanted to be part of this loud, loving, close but crazy Indian family.

Five years after the film I had this idea about making a musical. I started my work as an actor in theatre when I was 17 or 18 in India and so theatre is home to me and Monsoon Wedding the film had in its bones great music. To make the Wedding musical seemed the right thing to do . Also, I was tired of watching just Western musicals on the Broadway. We should also have our own (musicals) and if we don’t make them no-one will for us. So it is a journey of making an eternal story of Monsoon Wedding (come alive on stage)

What do you have to say about theatre as an art form and its current standing?

Well, the art of the musical is actually an ancient Indian art. It’s called nautanki, jatra …it’s called many things. But the art of live singing into drama is dying out in many ways because of playback singing, movies and so on. Monsoon Wedding the musical is trying

to go back to the ways of telling stories through songs and music – through live musicians responding to drama on stage. But at the same time, it is also making it highway bound Broadwaystyle. It’s musical theatre and very alive . It takes a lot actors, who can sing, dance and act at the same time to live music. So it’s a very beautiful form of electricity we create on stage of liveness.

Monsoon Wedding is now on the shores of Qatar. How do you want theatre-goers to see

it?

Her Highness Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani has loved the movie but also supported the inception of this musical over several years from New York to India to here. So it is very fitting for me to bring it to Qatar for world premiere of this stage. I also think people of Qatar from everywhere…they have united so many countries and their cultures to make this wonderful “Qatari culture” which is very much at the heart of the story of Monsoon Wedding

Where life’s a beach

AZQA HAROON DECIDED TO TAKE A WEEKEND BREAK TO HILTON SALWA BEACH RESORT FOR AN EXCITING GETAWAY WITH HER FAMILY. HERE’S HOW IT WENT!

LOCAL GETAWAY - HILTON SALWA
46 | QH | November 2022

There are some hotels which simply have it all. First impressions count the most in almost every kind of experience and Hilton Salwa beach resort not only gave an impeccable one, but also delivered.

With 45 minutes travel from the heart of Doha to the stunning resort, Hilton Salwa is everything you would expect from a 5-star beach resort – sun, sand and good times all round.

We checked in through the dedicated villa reception before being introduced to our personal villa host (Prakash) who promised 24/7 attention. Rest assured, this 5-star service also extends to each staff in the resort, and it is that kind of attitude that absolutely made our stay in Hilton Salwa an enjoyable and memorable one.

With a gorgeous 3.5kms of prime coastline, the largest water park in Qatar and 361 accommodations we stayed in the Arabian village luxurious townhouse — designed to reflect the beauty of Arabian culture. This exquisite town house combines enchanting, traditional style with outstanding contemporary amenities. Simple but elegant and in touch with tradition plus luxury finishes and a big courtyard and a private terrace — a perfect blend to get things right on a local getaway.

I absolutely loved how my bedroom window showed off the beautiful courtyard and fountain. The bathrooms are spacious with a tub as well as a separate shower.

But with so much to see and do at the resort, you probably won’t be spending too much time in your luxurious townhouse.

Depending on your mood or fancy Hilton Salwa has an extensive array of dining experience waiting for you. Our first night dinner was at newly opened Trader Vics with breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, live band and serving cuisines that match the opulence of every detail — be it décor or service. In a nutshell, a complete epitome of fine dining.

The food is exquisite at the resort, buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at Levantine and a range of local and international varieties are offered as well as live cooking stations.

After filling up on a bountiful breakfast, we were ready for some water park fun. Desert Falls is one of the largest theme parks in the Middle East spanning 57,000sqm; the park features 18 attractions and 56 slides and rides. The resort paid a lot of attention to entertainment for children — laser tag and go carting just to mention a few. My husband and I spent time relaxing at the water park day beds while children enjoyed the thrilling rides.

The resort also offers Miss Wong, a Chinese restaurant and the Island’s very own authentic Italian joint dishing out a range of Italian cuisine, including some of the best pizzas in Qatar.

While I love lounging by the pool with a great book or relaxing at the sandy beaches, sometimes you crave adventure. Thankfully, Hilton Salwa offers an incredible array of activities for its guests. Everyone can enjoy banana boat, desert falls canyoning, marine world diving experience to begin with! If that isn’t enough, their Dolphin Cruise is an experience to remember. We hopped on to the sunset cruise and were lucky enough to spot a pack of these friendly mammals, it was a delightful site, a peaceful boat ride, with the perfect sunset and dancing dolphis, we couldn’t have asked for more.

It’s just blissful taking tranquil walks around the resort. However, there are constantly hop-onhop-off buggies driving for the convenience of the guests.

Overall, we were blown away by this resort. The setting was stunning, the staff attentive and friendly. We were able to truly disconnect and relax over the weekend. We would highly recommend this paradise to anyone and can’t stop dreaming about the blue waters and the stunning view. It is so picturesque you could easily spend your entire stay enjoying the water park, spa, pool and delicious restaurants.

Truly, if you want to invest your money into a luxurious getaway that has it all, this is the resort that you should book into. I guarantee that you will not regret it at all, and you might just keep on coming back for more!

The world is waiting

QH TRAVELLER OFFERS VALUABE TIPS ON HOW TO BECOME A GLOBETROTTER — ON A BUDGET — AND RETURN FULFILLED!

Only a few unlucky amongst us won’t be thrilled by the prospects of travel for fun. Most of us, despite the dainty desire, cannot go on foreign trips now and then. Budgets are understandably a key reason but are we doing the math right? May be not.

Of course travel, sightseeing and fun can be expensive but only if we want it to be so. Most people in the world travelling for fun do so on a budget and come away having had as much fun as anyone with planeloads of money.

Let’s say you’re a salaried individual who doesn’t make large savings. So, how do you travel on a budget without sacrificing too much comfort and convenience and yet come away fulfilled and be ready for more soon thereafter?

All things come at a price but adding value to them requires some common sense and a bit of advance planning. It all starts with you being clear about what you like and what you want. Want to visit global landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Times Square, or natural

wonders like Victoria Falls and Grand Canyon, or museums like the Louvre and the Smithsonian? Or maybe soaking in local culture and nightlife? Or, instead, experiencing landmarks and neighbourhoods that hold a personal appeal and link your deeper interests in literature, history, politics or sports?

Chances are you’d like a combination of these in more countries than one. That’s your starting point for planning a trip, then -- choosing two or three (if not more) countries that are contiguous or at least close to each together. Visiting one country at a time is fine but visiting more than one country in a single trip will be obviously cheaper than making separate trips. Then you decide how many nights you’ll stay in each country. Depending on the time you have for the entire trip -- let’s say a week -- you can have about two days of 10-hour sightseeing time per country. In Western countries, and some Asian states too, where transport is organised, this is ample time to see in detail four to five key landmarks as well

48 | QH | November 2022 TRAVEL BUG - FEATURE

as any personal-interest venues per day. The best way to do this would be to, in these countries, take the hop on-hop off bus which offers two advantages:

(1) For a single ticket, the bus will take you all around the city to almost all key touristic places and landmarks in town and give you a running commentary on the city and those places’ histories, and

(2) You can get down at places that interest you, some of which you would have hopefully listed beforehand, to explore in detail, and come back and get on the same bus service to finish the loop. The ticket is valid for a full day of limitless hop on-hop off travel. In some places, like Athens, it is valid for two days.

Another trick is doing your internet homework beforehand -- in many cities there are organised walking tours of key landmarks, localities and even major chunks of the downtown that are free. Lasting between two to three hours of walkabouts these start

off at fixed times and fixed places, usually in the downtown areas or close to key landmarks. Your hotel can also inform you where these happen. You can simply join them for free. These are amazing tours as the guides conducting the tour usually have rich knowledge about both old and contemporary histories of the places as well anecdotes and quips you’ll never find yourself.

It’s amazing how much through a combination of hop on-hop off bus tours and free walking tours of a city you can see, learn and enjoy for a rich experience.

A key trick is booking yourself a hotel in a city’s downtown. This will provide you a rich menu of places to see, restaurants for culinary experiences to savour if you’re so inclined -- all within easy, walking access. Because downtown is the heart of a city, they are repositories of rich historical tradition, current custom and a wealth of both

mainstream and the odd discoveries waiting for you. This holds true for both larger cities like London, Athens and Paris as well as relatively smaller cities like Vilnius, Sarajevo, Cordoba, Panama and Colombo. And because downtowns grow with time, you get both -expensive 5-star hotels as well as small hotels and boutique establishments, which can save you lots of money.

Other smart hacks to save money include buying return air tickets and booking hotels online between one and three months in advance for up to 50 per cent cheaper prices. Use the safe and extremely reliable portals like cheaptickets.com and lastminute. com for flight options. They give you comparisons from different airlines with different option filters like direct flights or flights with stops, etc. Smaller airlines offer spectacular discounts for advance bookings. For hotels use portals like booking.com. Use their filters for your preferred options on location (always choose ‘downtown’/‘city centre’) and price. You’ll be amazed at the deals you get, including payment on arrival or payment online. You’ll get a single-page convenient printout of your booking with all key details. For inter-country and inter-city transfers, you can explore air, train or bus options with similar results. The earlier you make your online bookings, the cheaper the payments. Off-the-shelf, on-spot purchases can be expensive so go for online bookings. Early booking give you discounts for even the peak seasons. For all this, you’ll need a credit card.

Lastly, a time-saving hack that is also a money-saving tip: travel extremely light. Don’t worry about looking too good and taking lots of clothes. Trust me, nobody’s looking at you! n

Toshi table talk

Toshi is the latest addition to Doha’s culinary scene. Located in the most central Millennium Plaza hotel, this new venue is set to offer Pan-Asian cuisine. Opened just a couple of months ago, the restaurant is gearing up with a fiery mix of flavours for anyone who wishes to dive into Asian cuisine with a reasonable price range. The restaurant also offers live cooking stations, teppanyaki table and sashimi counter. The décor is sleek and spacious.

We kicked off our culinary journey with Thai Beef Salad, Satay, edamame, and Miso soup. So, for anyone who isn’t sure what to order, these are the perfect staters to prep your palate for what’s yet to come.

Clearly, we went for more, and zeroed in on Toshi special role (Maki); spicy tuna, asparagus, tobiko, crunch, kabayaki sauce and spicy mayo. If you ask us, this was quite a treat! Not only was it crunchy and fresh but also its portion was good enough to be shared by two. California role was the

other maki we opted for, the mix of flavours within it were scrumptious.

We also partook Kung Pao Chicken. Exquisite, delicious, luscious – unable to think of any more adjectives to describe this plate. Next, we ventured with a Pad Thai noodle, this was everything you’d wish in a Pad Thai really. And last but not the least the dessert, Harumaki Choco, a crispy spring roll pastry with banana and chocolate served with sorbet ice cream, was just the perfect wrap to our delightful culinary journey.

If you are looking for authentic, serene, and decidedly Asian vibe, this place is near perfect. And if you wish to order a variety of options and are into sharing then the portions are surely big enough to cater your desire. n

Spatastic!

SARAY SPA IS THE ULTIMATE PLACE TO UNWIND AND GIVE YOUR BODY THE REJUVENATION IT CRAVES AS OUR QH REVIEWER FINDS OUT

Are you feeling the stress of a busy routine? then you might want to find the scoop on this relaxing spa. Located on the 7th floor of one of the city’s most inviting hotels, Marriott Marquis Doha, Saray Spa is a friendly and cozy spa for those who seek to unwind in a quick lunch break, or after an exhausting week. Whatever your reasons, the spa offers just the perfect tools for an afternoon or morning to unwind from the city’s very own hustle bustle. The venue offers a hamam, separate changing rooms and various treatment rooms.

Treatment

I had to give the spa a go and provide you with the insights. My morning began with a quick change, getting into a comfortable bathrobe. The pleasant therapist made me feel extremely

comfortable and offered a calming foot wash before heading to something extremely rejuvenating. Now, I was ready to unwind with an oil body massage which consisted of a 60-minute Balinese massage, highly recommended for reducing insomnia and fatigue. If you wish to go a little longer you can also opt for a 90-minute one.

I opted for a medium-to-strong pressure, which the therapist successfully managed to maintain throughout my wellness journey. The beauty of these oil massages is that it tailors your needs and reduces knots. The therapist worked on my back and shoulders ensuring these to be knot-free. My arms and legs were also massaged and of course the one I was waiting for – head and scalp massage. Too good!

All treatments are followed by a time out – certain calm with a cup of soothing ginger tea and refreshments

at the relaxing room, exclusive for ladies and gents.

Alternatives

If, however, you are not into body massages and only out for a youthful look, then dive into facials. The spa offers the extended youth facial, which is suitable for all skin types, targeting first wrinkles (25+ years), smoothing and filing.

Also on offer is Moroccan bath – an old traditional cleansing ritual done to clean, whiten and soften the skin. It also helps to relax tired nerves and muscles while enhancing blood circulation. The spa offers a myriad of options to choose from when it comes to relaxing the body and keeping the skin on point. Whether you are looking for a tranquil afternoon, or a facial to invigorate your skin, Saray spa might be just the one, especially given the amiable staff. n
