World-renowned Qatari composer Dana Al Fardan performed at the prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival, appearing at the star-studded Trophée Chopard official dinner.
Dana Al Fardan performed her latest masterpiece, ‘Indigo,’ at the Trophée Chopard official dinner, entertaining celebrities including Demi Moore, Iris Knobloch, Thierry Frémaux, Greta Gerwig, Eva Green, and Kevin Costner. The event at the Carlton Beach Club marked a historic moment for the Doha-born musician at the 24th edition of Trophée Chopard.
Attendees of the Trophée Chopard were captivated by Dana Al Fardan's performance of “Solstice" and “Onyx” from her album "Indigo," with soloists from the Cannes National Symphonic Orchestra and violinist Maias Alyamani. The orchestra also played “Chromium,” “Stillness,” and premiered "Caroline," a tribute to Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele. Al Fardan stated, "Caroline embodies the innovation and elegance I aim to convey through my music.”
As the cultural ambassador of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) and a leading Arab creative talent, Al Fardan showcased her role and the QPO's talents on a global stage.
“As an artist, it is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to have an impact on such a high profile and culturally important platform as the Cannes Film Festival,” said Al Fardan.
Qatar’s rich contemporary art and music scene is gaining international recognition. Welcoming one of its talents to an event such as the Trophée Chopard highlights the increasing global importance of our cultural and creative contributions.
“I am truly honoured to have had the opportunity to be a part of this,” commented Al Fardan, who transcends musical boundaries with her diverse repertoire, blending classical, electronic, and Arab influences. Her latest single, ‘Falling,’ a collaboration with French producer Yaans, showcases her versatility and innovative approach to storytelling through music.
Recently, her compositions revitalised Ludovico Ariosto's ‘Orlando Furioso’ at the Politeama Garibaldi di Palermo, underlining her impact on the global stage. Al Fardan continues to captivate audiences, set to present "Indigo" at the Fiesolana Summer Festival in Tuscany.
Awsaj Academy recently showcased artistic creations made from cardboards by its gifted students. On the sidelines of the exhibition, Aparajita Mukherjee spoke to their art teacher, Hessa Al Thani on how an educational institution plays its part in furthering sustainability efforts.
QH: Talk us through the initiative of Awsaj Academy showcasing artistic creations made from cardboard.
Al Thani: Awsaj Academy was invited to a few sustainabilityrelated meetings. Then, as a representative of our school, I planned to conduct an art show using recycled materials such as waste cardboard and used carton boxes and came up with an idea for a meaningful event in which I could showcase my students' abilities and skills while also promoting our cultural history and sustainability.
QH: How, in your opinion, will this enhance sustainability that is gradually becoming the need of the hour?
Al Thani: Showcasing beautiful cardboard products promotes recycling, resource efficiency, creativity, environmental awareness, and education, all of which are sustainable values. This method not only improves artistic expression, but also helps to promote a more sustainable and ecologically responsible approach to art and design.
QH: What was the inspiration behind this initiative?
Al Thani: The major objectives for organising a sustainability event are to increase awareness about environmental concerns and to motivate us to make changes to become an eco-friendly organisation. Next, to advocate sustainable habits to others who see them. Then, to promote networking and collaboration. And to show commitment and create good change towards a more sustainable future.
QH: How did the students respond to it?
Al Thani: Students expressed pride in sharing their rich culture with others, leading to favourable responses. And they are easily persuaded to sketch their culture.
QH: Does the Academy have plans on an ongoing basis for this initiative in the near future?
Al Thani: Absolutely. Since one of our aims is sustainability. It is a great assistance to raise awareness about environmental issues as well as to highlight our rich cultural history.

Multi-medium artist Clym Evernden speaks to Aparajita Mukherjee on his collaboration with the Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar and how the project has brought a burst of creativity to the Middle East.
Creativity has no boundaries and even though Clym Evernden had a creative brief from Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar, in order to bring the project to fruition and to create the illustrations, Everndyn researched the wider Doha region and explored various districts and views, examining how the iconic skyline appears reflected in the water both day and night.
Talking us through the work he’s done for Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar, Evernden mentions, “Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar approached me to mark the launch and essentially provide an artist's interpretation of key areas within the hotel and resort. They discovered my work on Instagram and were drawn to its adaptability to the hotel environment. They requested my focus on four specific areas: the apartments and residences, the Loulou Plage Beach Restaurant, the Le Deli Robuchon restaurant operated by a Michelin-starred chef, and finally, the overall ambience and setting of the hotel. So, my task encompassed these four main areas.”
Evernden’s artworks are minute and delayed, with rich nuances and layers. Commenting on the role that detailing plays in his artworks, Evernden informs that he strives for a blend of seamless fluidity with carefully placed details. “It's about finding the right balance. For this project, I aimed to capture the essence of each location with key landmarks and viewpoints while infusing a touch of whimsy and creativity. It's about marrying realism with imaginative interpretation.”
For a multi-medium artist, staying within the confines of one art form is restrictive. Toggling effortlessly between illustrations, videos, Evernden’s creations are a maze and blend of different mediums. What method did he use to unify his art approach for this project?
Evernden says unequivocally, “It's a bit of both, really. For me, it's all about creativity, whether it's a still artwork or a video. I started with four main still artworks for each area, then expanded on them to create videos. We decided to incorporate real items from the hotel into each video. For example, in the apartments and residences video, I used a key card they sent me, and you can see my hands at work. Making videos is always thrilling because everything comes to life – it's like watching the artwork evolve.”
Artists are zealous about their space and freedom. And with this project, Evernden owns up to being “fortunate to have a brief but also significant creative freedom and trust. I appreciate the loose structure, which they provided, alongside creative freedom. The process was straightforward, without unnecessary complications”.
As an artist, how will this experience help Evernden in seeing the region and how does he think this exposure will help him evolve as an artist?
“Having global exposure is significant for an artist. While I've worked in areas such as the US and Europe before, it was crucial to have my art showcased in this region, especially since it's entirely new territory for me. This marks my first venture into Doha, Qatar, and with novelty comes excitement. The fresh perspective encourages artistic growth by presenting new viewpoints and visuals to explore.”
There are several museums and with sovereign funding, art and artists are at a premium here.
Would Evernden think of collaborating with local artists and learning from them?
Evernden is clear, and says, “Absolutely. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the abundance of museums and galleries in Doha, with a strong emphasis on supporting local artists. Transitioning from a fashion background, I found it fascinating to encounter renowned brands in Doha's malls. What struck me most was the focus on local talent rather than solely on globally recognised artists. During my time at Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar, I had the opportunity to meet and participate in workshops with some local artists.”

QH recently spoke with Shadi Suleman, senior general manager, Four Seasons Hotel Doha, to discuss the hotel's unique offerings, brand values, recent updates, and future plans.
QH: Tell us five reasons for guests to choose your hotel in Doha.
Suleman: Our iconic property, the "Grande Dame" of Doha, boasts nearly 20 years of history. We stand out with a prime location, luxurious accommodations, diverse dining options, and top-notch spa and wellness facilities. However, our true distinction lies in our commitment to the guest experience. From personalised pre-arrival preparations to creating memorable stays, we forge emotional connections with our guests. Our dedication to exceptional service, recently earning us a 5-star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, underscores our focus on personalised hospitality.
QH: What are your brand values, something that no other hospitality player in Doha has?
Suleman: At Four Seasons, our brand values distinguish us in the hospitality industry. Since our early days, the focus has been on managing small and medium-sized hotels with exceptional quality. Our founder, Isadore Sharp, believed that our true differentiator would be our people and their service, beyond just the product.
We follow the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This principle guides our interactions, ensuring genuine care and meaningful connections. This authentic approach is unique to Four Seasons in Doha.
QH: What have been the expansions/ refurbishments of your property in the past year? What do you think about 2024? Are there any plans to modify/upscale your property?
Suleman: In the past year, we have made several updates to enhance our guests' experience. 2023 saw the successful debut of Curiosa by Jean-Georges, a vibrant Latin-American restaurant, and the opening of Le Deli Robuchon, a collaboration with the renowned Joël Robuchon brand. We also transformed our pool area, improving both its aesthetics and convenience. Looking ahead to 2024, we have planned several largescale projects during the low season. We will renovate our signature all-day dining restaurant, Elements, set to reopen in Q4. Additionally, enhancements are planned for our Spa & Wellness Centre to maintain its status as a top relaxation spot with a refreshed ambience.
We remain committed to exploring opportunities to elevate our property and look forward to the future at Four Seasons hotel Doha.
QH: Where do you see your property/brand in the next 2 years?
Suleman: In the next two years, Four Seasons is set for significant growth and innovation. With the recent addition of Four Seasons at The Pearl-Qatar, we're expanding our presence in Doha into the residential space, aligning with our strategy to diversify our business model.
Globally, Four Seasons is expanding in luxury offerings. We're introducing new private jet itineraries and launching the Four Seasons Yacht in 2025. We're also developing standalone residential properties and offering unique experiences such as our driving experience for motor enthusiasts. Our retail strategy allows guests to engage with our brand beyond their stay, such as purchasing Four Seasons beds for home use.
In the Middle East, our ambitious pipeline includes new properties in Saudi Arabia at prestigious locations such as Madinah, Red Sea at Shura Island, NEOM at Sindalah, and AMAALA at Triple Bay, reinforcing our commitment to enriching the luxury hospitality landscape in the region.
QH: Talk us through the timeless business lessons the pandemic taught and how your property has adapted to those.
Suleman: The pandemic was a difficult time in modern history. Despite the hardships, it presented profound business lessons that have reshaped our approach at Four Seasons hotel Doha. We were fortunate to undergo renovations during this period, allowing us to maximise this downtime to enhance our facilities.
One of the key lessons learned was the importance of the local market as a business driver during such times. Here in Doha, we have always been successful, where Qataris are loyal clients of the hotel.

Walk hand in hand with Azqa Haroon who had the pleasure of dining at Sazeli Qatar. In one word: the experience was nothing short of exceptional!
Located at The Pearl, Sazeli Qatar offers a unique fusion of authentic Turkish flavours with modern inspirations, making it a must-visit for both seasoned foodies and casual diners alike.
The restaurant boasts a sophisticated ambience with both indoor and outdoor seating options. The elegant decor and inviting atmosphere set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The Sazeli Lounge on the first floor is particularly notable, offering a relaxed environment where guests can enjoy exquisite Turkish cuisine.
The meal began with an array of beautifully presented salads and appetisers. The Gavurdag Salad was a refreshing start, featuring a delightful mix of fresh vegetables and tangy dressing. The Salad with Tulum Cheese offered a rich, creamy contrast, while the Tabouleh and Warak Enab brought traditional Middle Eastern flavours to the table.
The Sazeli Special Babaganoush stood out with its smoky, velvety texture and subtle hint of garlic. The Onion Flower was not only visually stunning but also perfectly crispy and flavourful. Among the mezzes, the Moutabbel and Mouhamara were exceptional, each bursting with robust relish. The Beef Sushi added a modern twist to the traditional offerings, providing a unique and delectable bite.
For the main course, I indulged in several of Sazeli's signature dishes. The Beef Spaghetti was a delightful surprise, combining tender beef with a rich, savoury sauce. The Lamb Rack was cooked to perfection, offering a succulent and delicious experience. The Chateaubriand and Tomahawk steaks were the highlights of the evening, each cut meticulously grilled over live fire and presented as a true work of art. The aged beef's quality was evident in every bite, reaffirming Sazeli's reputation for serving the finest cuts. The spectacular presentation of live-fire cooking was truly impressive.
To conclude the meal, the Carrot Slice Baklava was a delightful end note. This dessert offered a perfect balance of sweetness and texture, leaving me thoroughly satisfied.
Sazeli Qatar offers an extensive selection of cold and hot beverages, soft drinks, and shisha, ensuring that every guest can find something to their liking.
Whether you're looking for a place to enjoy a gourmet meal or simply to relax with a fine beverage, Sazeli Qatar promises an unforgettable dining experience.

Heenat Salma Farm in Doha is a multifaceted project of the Caravane Earth Foundation. This certified organic farm follows permaculture methods and is deeply committed to environmental stewardship and responsible farming. The farm uses only natural materials, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
Central to Heenat Salma's approach is composting, transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost that enriches the soil, promotes plant health, and reduces landfill waste, all of which are part of the innovative farming techniques that the farm uses. The farm also applies multicropping, a traditional farming method that enhances biodiversity and improves soil health by growing various crops together, naturally deterring pests and reducing the need for chemical inputs.
The farm hosts a variety of animals, including chickens, sheep, and rabbits. These animals are integral to the permaculture system, consuming food and vegetable waste and providing plant nutrientrich manure. Extensive use of mulching conserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and maintains stable soil temperatures, fostering a resilient farming system. During the scorching summer months, cover crops protect and enrich the soil, preventing erosion and maintaining soil structure.
Native plants and trees, such as Sidra, palm trees, and moringa, are crucial in Heenat Salma's sustainability efforts. These well-adapted plants provide essential shade, reduce water loss, and create habitats for local wildlife, supporting biodiversity. Additionally, the farm integrates efficient irrigation systems and renewable energy sources, ensuring that every aspect of its operation aligns with the principles of sustainability and environmental care.
Heenat Salma envisions itself as a living laboratory that showcases the potential for regenerative farming practices in arid regions. The farm aims to transform these regions into fertile, biodiverse, and resilient landscapes, countering desertification and building a local, organic food supply in Qatar for the health and well-being of the nation. Heenat Salma also seeks to inspire a wide audience, including farmers, landowners, policymakers, educators, and homeowners, to support adopting organic farming principles and systems in Qatar and beyond.

Al Arabi secured their second Qatar Handball Cup title by edging Al Duhail 35-34 after a thrilling penalty shootout at the Qatar Handball Association’s court on May 26, 2024.
Al Arabi initially led in the first half, but Al Duhail levelled the score at 26-26 by full-time.
In extra time, Al Duhail took a 29-26 lead with Swiss player Janus Lapajne scoring three consecutive goals. However, goals from Al Arabi’s Mohammed and Basil Mosa, along with a penalty shot from Anis Zouaoui, tied the game at 29-29, forcing a shootout.
The shootout was equally dramatic. Al Arabi goalkeeper Ahmed M stopped attempts by Fasco Silvalivitch and Ahmed Saleh, while Abdulrahman Abdulla and Amin Nooreldien succeeded. Alaaeldein Belrashed’s shot missed the target.
Al Arabi’s Zouaoui and Nadal Issa scored, but Al Duhail keeper Ahmed Albidawi saved shots from Abdulrahman Ali, Boslan, and Mohammed, tying the score at 31.
In sudden death, Al Arabi’s Zouaoui, Issa, and Ali scored, with Wajdi Snan netting their 35th goal. Al Duhail’s Abdulla, Nooreldien, and Silvalivitch were on target but missed attempts from Saleh and Belrashed handed Al Arabi the victory.
After the final, Al Arabi’s goalkeeper Ahmed emphasised the importance of the Qatar Cup win for his team.
“It is an important moment for us. The Qatar Cup is a very important cup for us, especially since we are really tired this season. The players are tired after a very busy season. We had to do a lot of preparations. Thank God, the Qatar Cup is ours now. God willing, we will be successful in the Amir Cup too,” Ahmed, who made several crucial saves, said.
“No one anticipated in the beginning that this match was going for the penalty kicks. I mean, it was a real tough game,” Ahmed said.
