Dual benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and children: PHCC

In recent years, there has been ample speculation on the active interaction of breast milk with infants’ saliva, and scientists hypothesised that breast milk could modify itself to suit a baby’s gut microbiomes. While more research is still underway, studies have proved this true.

There is no denying that breastmilk is the most important component in a baby’s life, and it is imperative that people understand its importance to raise healthy children.

To develop awareness of the dual benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and children, Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has established a campaign to educate the people of Qatar. Working in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), this campaign aims to communicate the benefits of feeding breast milk, to encourage mothers to adopt breastfeeding on a large scale. The campaign was carried out during World Breastfeeding Week, under the slogan ‘Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All’, an awareness drive organised by the Global Breastfeeding Collective.

The new campaign does not just wrap up with spreading awareness, it goes a step further and ensures implementation by establishing the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), supervised by the health sector. This programme is operated by introducing laws and policies that encourage breastfeeding for its medical benefits for both the mother and their children.

Since social media has extensive reach to people, PHCC has decided to use it to its benefit. Dr Sadriya Al Kohji,

assistant medical director for child and adolescent services, has explained how the campaign is using Instagram Live, television interviews, and printed materials at educational booths installed in health centres to broadcast its message.

Wider reach

For easier access to mothers and babies, the campaign has been extended to health centres where PHCC has opened educational booths containing awareness brochures on breastfeeding guidelines. These booklets are available in both Arabic and English for easier access for the public. The educational material conveys the benefits of breastfeeding and its role in protection of the child. Representatives of PHCC will help new mothers learn that exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to two years of age, and the kind of nutrients that it enriches a child with. These educational booths help in informing mothers about the fact that babies who are breastfed are more intelligent, and less likely to be obese, overweight, and fall prey to type 2 diabetes.

PHCC has also started postpartum home visits, which gives a much-needed one-on-one interaction with new mothers. They are provided with breastfeeding covers to encourage breastfeeding.

The Qatar Calendar House’s (QCH) astronomical observation team monitored the Perseid meteor shower from the Sudanthile area south of Qatar during the early hours of Tuesday, August 13.

On August 12, Qatar witnessed the most spectacular celestial display of the Perseid meteor shower. It was spotted at the Sawda Natheel area by the astronomical observation team at the Qatar Calendar House.

Perseid: Meteor shower in Qatar

Many pictures of the meteor shower were captured, along with time lapse videos. Citizens in Qatar took to Instagram to share several photos of bright streaks across the star-lit sky. Many astronomy enthusiasts populated their YouTube channels with time-lapse videos as well.

Owing to their colourful bursts that stay visible in the sky for longer than other meteorites, the Perseid meteor shower is regarded as the best celestial show of the year. It is active from mid-July to late August and 50-100 meteors can be seen in an hour. The Perseid meteors are far brighter than any other, and they might be the only meteor shower you experience in your lifetime!

As more and more people have become aware of meteor showers, there has been a rise in camping trips designed around these astronomical events. With the help of mobile phones and cameras, pictures and videos of meteor showers have piled up, making them an internet sensation.

How to witness meteor showers

It’s not difficult to witness an aurora or a meteor shower now; you need a place with zero light pollution, a comfortable sleeping bag, and an enthusiasm for astrological wonders. It takes some time for our eyes to adjust to the dark, but the sky is visible once it gets used to the surroundings. Using a compass, you can locate the origin point of the meteor shower, and then enjoy the spectacular show.

The Perseids meteor shower is visible on Earth only because we pass through the debris, which are fragments of ice and rock, left by the Swift-Tuttle Comet that passed close to the Earth in 1992. The Perseids appear from the constellation Perseus, in the direction of the Northern Hemisphere. Meteors are fragments of a meteoroid that enter the Earth’s atmosphere and are visible to humans. These pieces from space are blazing hot, with temperatures around 1,650 degrees Celsius, and are visible at 97 kms from the Earth’s surface.

As a meteor enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it burns and bursts in different colours which creates streaks of light across the sky. According to NASA, they travel at 59 kms per second, which is why they are swift.

Chloé Nomade Nuit D’Egypte: A mesmerising new fragrance!

Nomade embarks on a new journey to Egypt, honouring Maison founder Gaby Aghion's roots and discovering Nomade Nuit d’Égypte. From the start, Chloé has embraced a unique vision, driven by a passion for discovery and celebrating authentic beauty. This spirit inspired the creation of the first Nomade, a fragrance that embodies a love for exploration and cultural exchange.

Back to Egyption soil

Nomade Nuit d’Égypte honours Chloé's founder, Gaby Aghion, who was born

in Alexandria in 1921 and later moved to France. Her Egyptian roots have continually influenced the Maison's style since its founding in 1952. Egypt, the birthplace of perfumery, introduced the world to kyphi, an ancient scent burned by priests to honor Ra and used as a medicinal remedy. Chloé now reinterprets this ancient art.

Age-old inspirations

Perfumer Juliette Karagueuzoglou reimagines kyphi with modern touches, blending myrrh, ginger, cinnamon,

broom flower nectar, cypriol, and opopanax. Orange blossom from the Nile Delta and warm vanilla add depth to this 90 percent natural origin Eau de Parfum.

The packaging

Nomade Nuit d’Égypte is housed in the iconic Nomade bottle, adorned with a deep blue knot symbolising "Egyptian blue," the world's first pigment. The packaging reflects Chloé's eco-conscious values, using recycled materials in both the bottle and box.

Chloé is available at Sephora, Mall of Qatar, and Fifty One East, Lagoona Mall, Doha.

Summer skin care: In blow-by-blow

detail!

Summer in Qatar is bright and lively but can be quite harsh on your skin. The intense heat, combined with high humidity, can overstimulate oil glands, leading to excessive oiliness, particularly around the T-zone.

To maintain healthy skin during Qatar’s summer, it’s essential to address issues such as dehydration and avoid clogging pores with heavy makeup.

Here are eight tips to help you care for your skin during the hot months

Exfoliate regularly

Your skin naturally sheds dead cells throughout the day. If these aren’t removed, your skin can appear dull and dry. Use a gentle body scrub in the shower to exfoliate your skin. Apply a small amount of the scrub and massage it in circular motions to refresh your skin.

Stay hydrated

Your body needs at least eight glasses of water daily. Carry a water bottle and take sips regularly to stay hydrated. This not only prevents dehydration but also helps flush out toxins from your body.

Switch to summerfriendly products

Thick creams used in winter may not be suitable for summer as they can cause sweating and discomfort. Choose lighter moisturisers or summer-specific skincare products to keep your skin comfortable.

Eat a balanced diet

Sometimes, dry skin in the summer is due to poor diet. Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables into your meals, cut back on sugary drinks, and drink plenty of water. Coconut water or natural juices can also help keep your skin hydrated.

Care for your lips, eyes, and feet

Apply sunscreen

Don’t neglect your lips, eyes, and feet during the summer. Apply sunscreen to your feet, use lip balm before bed, and wash your eyes with water at least twice a day. Consider using an eye gel for additional care. 1

Prolonged sun exposure can dry out your skin. Make sure to apply sunscreen on your face, arms, and any other exposed areas before heading out, especially during peak sunlight hours. This helps prevent sunburn and protects your skin cells. Don’t forget to cleanse your face at night to avoid pore blockages caused by sunscreen.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Stick to the basics

Maintain a basic skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning, and moisturising. The constant shift between airconditioned indoors and the hot outdoors can affect your skin. Before bed, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and apply a suitable moisturiser.

Go light on makeup

Heavy makeup can clog pores, especially in hot and humid weather. Opt for lighter products such as a moisturising skin cream and lip balm instead of heavy foundations or powders.

Following these tips will help you keep your skin healthy and glowing despite the challenging summer conditions in Qatar.

**Ghanim Al Sulaiti is a young Qatari entrepreneur passionate about creating a positive impact on society by promoting a plant-based lifestyle. In his spare time, he is a serial entrepreneur, founding his first business – Evergreen Organics – in 2016, and now has over 10 projects currently live or under development. All these projects share the same vision and values as its founder – to be vegan, sustainable, and promote a healthier lifestyle.

Enbat: Leading sustainability as a business ethos

Enbat Holdings, a family of vegan and sustainable companies based in Qatar, began its journey in 2016 with the founder’s mission to create a global ecosystem where plant-based businesses can flourish. Today, their growth spans the food, wellness, and service industries through ethical investments in eight unique companies writes Ghanim Al Sulaiti**.

Enbat Holdings’ core philosophy hinges on consistently avoiding ventures that contribute to animal suffering, environmental destruction, and climate change. At Enbat, we have adopted numerous sustainability standards to ensure we effectively manage our emissions and environmental impact. We have calculated our carbon emissions for Scope 1, 2, and 3, and set ambitious goals to achieve net zero. Through our restaurants, we have integrated a zero-waste policy, composting fruit and vegetable leftovers, customer leftovers, and juice pulps, which we then donate to local farms. At our PaperCut factory, we use 100 percent recycled paper for packaging and recycle all paper waste produced, ensuring circularity is achieved. Our factory will soon operate in a solarpowered facility, ensuring a fully regenerative manufacturing process. In collaboration with Lulu Qatar, we launched a campaign in 2022 to promote compostable and biodegradable packaging, positioning us as industry pioneers in Qatar.

We designed and manufactured the packaging, helping customers switch to a greener option. In Botany – The Vegan Alchemist (our organic skincare line), we use only glass packaging and have implemented a refill programme with a reward system to encourage customers to return their glass containers. This initiative reduces plastic waste and enforces a culture of reuse. In 2025, we are relocating our manufacturing from Australia to Qatar, which will significantly reduce our carbon emissions.

Public transportation

Across all our branches, we require staff to use the metro, significantly reducing our emissions. This policy promotes public transportation and reduces urban air pollution

In 2022, we started our partnership with Forest Smoothie to plant trees for every smoothie sold in our restaurants. Visit any of our shops and help us offset our emissions. Enbat’s approach to sustainability shows our dedication to creating a positive impact on our society and the environment. We strive to lead by example, setting innovative standards for ethical and sustainable business practices in Qatar and beyond and we are happy to have been recognised with awards such as the Most Sustainable Business in Qatar, by Qatar Development Bank and the Greenest Restaurant in Qatar by the Qatar Green Building Council.

Multi-pronged initiatives towards responsible luxury

Tivoli, a cross-country hospitality operator, speaks about its sustainability initiatives across four of its Qatar properties: Banana Island Resort Doha, Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels, Souq Al Wakra Hotel, Al Najada Hotel, Al Najada Hotel Apartments.

Banana Island Resort Doha

At Banana Island Resort Doha, a deep commitment to sustainability and responsible luxury underpins every guest's experience. The resort's initiatives focus on recycling, waste reduction, and responsible leisure to ensure a compassionate and environmentally-conscious stay.

The Compost Production programme is a key sustainability initiative aimed at reducing waste. Organic waste from the kitchen, dining areas, and garden is processed in compost bins to produce 480 kg of biofertiliser from garden waste, supporting the island’s environmental efforts. The resort has also introduced biodegradable wooden key cards to minimise plastic waste, aligning with its environmental stewardship.

Additionally, the Lime Scrub Project at Anantara Spa harnesses locally grown lime fruits and sea salt to create a natural scrub for spa rituals, maximising the use of island resources. The resort's garden nurtures vegetables using nutrient-rich water from an in-house compost system, fostering sustainable culinary practices.

Furthermore, a solar system is employed for water heating in back-of-house areas, showcasing the resort’s commitment to energy efficiency. These initiatives embody Banana Island Resort Doha's ongoing dedication to sustainable hospitality and demonstrate its role in preserving luxury for current and future generations.

Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels, Souq Al Wakra Hotel, Al Najada Hotel, Al Najada Hotel Apartments

Through the remarkable efforts of our Energy Saving Committee, the properties have achieved extraordinary milestones, effectively reducing energy and water consumption across all hotels. A 10 percent reduction in energy and a 35 percent reduction in water consumption has been achieved compared to 2023, setting a new standard for eco-conscious hospitality.

This significant accomplishment was made possible through the strategic implementation of energy-efficient LEDs, motion sensors, and water aerators, leading to a substantial decrease in water waste and electricity consumption throughout the facilities. Additionally, partnering with environmental companies for used oil and paper recycling has resulted in the donation of 1,055 kilograms of used oil and 5,370 kilograms of paper, solidifying the commitment to waste reduction and fostering sustainable practices.

Furthermore, the properties have replaced plastic keycards with biodegradable wooden keycards, significantly minimising plastic waste and reinforcing their dedication to environmental stewardship.

In a concerted effort to further reduce our environmental impact, the hotels will be installing refillable dispensers in all guest bathrooms, eliminating the need for over 60,000 single-use plastic bottles across their properties. Moreover, the hotels contribute to societal well-being by donating unused linens to those in need, exemplifying their holistic approach to sustainability.

With a commitment to revolutionising the culinary experience, all restaurants have transitioned to digital food menus, and sourced food items from local producers, aligning with our core values of environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Banana Island Resort Doha’s initiatives come to us through Roberto Simone, general manager of the resort; Marwen Bouhajja, hotel manager, Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels and Al Najada Hotel, sheds light on their efforts while Souq Al Wakra Hotel’s drives have been put together for us by Ala Hamdi, hotel manager.

Earthna’s climate change thinking & action: Pioneering attempts to up sustainability

The challenge of minimising our impact on the planet is the most urgent issue of our era–and perhaps the hardest to solve. Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future (Earthna), a non-profit policy research and advocacy centre emerged from Qatar Foundation’s (QF) mission to address those challenges, by promoting and enabling a coordinated approach to environmental, social, and economic sustainability and future prosperity, writes Sebastien Turbot**.

Supporting Qatar and other hot, arid nations towards a sustainable future, Earthna focuses on sustainability frameworks, circular economies, energy transition and climate change, biodiversity and sustainability and traditional knowledge.

The challenge with sustainability policies, regardless of their scale, is that they demand a leap of commitment from a diverse set of actors. Since its formation in 2022, Earthna has been steadfast in initiating several initiatives to bring together Qatar’s community of policymakers, technical experts, academia, businesses and civil society, to collaborate with leading regional and international organisations and enhance the country’s sustainability efforts.

For example, September 28 sees the start of the 9th Qatar Sustainability Week (QSW), a National Campaign which engages the community in sustainability activities, to achieve the global sustainability goals outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030. The resounding success of QSW over the past 8 years has seen more than 600,000 people engaging in initiatives and activities across Qatar.

Exchanging insights

From October 1-2, Earthna will bring together leaders from key stakeholders in Qatar and beyond to exchange insights and advance solutions to meet Qatar’s environmental challenges at the 4th edition of the Qatar National Dialogue on Climate Change.

Similarly, in 2023 Earthna held its inaugural Earthna summit at Msheireb Downtown Doha. The international public event under the theme of 'Building New Sustainability Pathways for Hot and Arid Environments’ explored a wide range of topics through interactive activities to initiate the dialogue of climate change.

One of its newest initiatives is the Earthna Prize, an initiative to celebrate and support projects, actors and systems that are working towards the preservation, integration, adaptation, and adoption of ancestral knowledge and cultural heritage in addressing contemporary environmental challenges. The Earthna Prize will recognise communities and organisations globally whose work aligns with one or more of the prize’s themes: water resource management, food security, sustainable urbanism, and land stewardship. With a prize pool of US$1 million, winners will be announced at the Earthna Summit in 2025 and can use the award to support the development of their work.

**Sebastien Turbot is director, content development, at Earthna developing the centre’s overarching editorial approach and defining advocacy campaigns, with his work being focused on building collaborative learning and living ecosystems that help communities develop the knowledge, skills and talents they need to inject sustainability into current and future societies.

Heart health: The must-do's!

On the occasion of

World

Heart Day (September 29), Dr. Joji Mathews addresses four common concerns raised during clinical consults.

In adult cardiology, the most common conditions seen are blockages involving arteries of the heart (coronary artery disease), hypertension and hypertensive heart disease, lipid disorders, heart pumping dysfunction (heart failure) due to various reasons, disease of heart valves, and disorders of heart rhythms.

To complete the list, the less common are heart diseases that are there from birth and are detected or followed through into adulthood (adult congenital heart disease), diseases of heart muscles (cardiomyopathies) and disease involving the covering of the heart (pericardial disease).

The most common cardiac conditions

Role of genetics and lifestyle in the commonly seen cardiac ailments

The reasons behind cardiac diseases are broadly categorised as non-modifiable (e.g., age, sex, family history of heart disease/ genetics, race) and modifiable risk factors (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, physical inactivity, obesity, poor diet, sub-optimal sleep, stress, smoking).

The non-modifiable factors have a major share in the prognosis of heart disease relative to the modifiable risk factors. However, with the control of modifiable risks, there is a substantial reduction in cardiovascular disease events.

Both environment and behaviour modification by adopting a healthy lifestyle can change how a DNA sequence is read. The modifications are seen to turn on or off the genes. An over simplified implication of this would mean that just because a gene is inherited, the disease does not have to manifest. This science is called epigenetics. Its understanding is still at nascent stages. Both genetics and lifestyle determine manifestation of disease.

Cardiovascular disease in the young and apparently physically healthy

Various reasons can be considered for the increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease at a younger age. The foremost of it is a poor lifestyle – namely poor diet resulting in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, physical inactivity, poor sleep, stress and harmful substance use.

The markers of good health as many presume (e.g., good physique, optimal blood pressure, blood glucose levels and lipid panel) will be altered only at later stages of the disease that is under progress. This is because the body has an immense buffer system and can tolerate poor lifestyle for a long time till the balance tips against one’s favour.

On introspection, compared to the earlier generation, the food we eat are modified, loaded with pesticides, is fast and processed. In addition, there is poor discipline in food portioning, time of eating, physical activity, time spent sleeping, and a loss of social support that came while staying together in a large family. Consequently, the cumulative effect of the above factors results in a proinflammatory and pro-clot prone internal environment in the body. Over a course of time, there is a transformation into disease states. Therefore, the present era and the current choice of living has its bearing in precipitating disease in advance.

Outcome of optimal lifestyle and treatment compliance

Awareness of our physiology and sticking to what the body is designed for is the key to prevent progression to diseases. Once the disease is in progress, the recovery is subject to the extent of the damage that has occurred.

A bird’s eye view of a physiologically tolerated lifestyle includes: a) A diet from natural foods that is balanced in nutrition and optimal in calories calculated for the ideal body weight for height. These foods should be preferably taken in feeding windows that prevents development of insulin resistance (intermittent fasting). Stay clear from sugar and processed foods. b) An exercise programme that includes at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activities (a pace where you can talk but cannot sing without getting short of breath); Strength training of all major muscle groups done two days a week at least as two sets of 10 repetitions; Stretch exercises across all major joints for 15 second with four repetitions; Balance exercise as in yoga or Tai-chi. c) Seven hours of sleep a day preferably at one stretch. DNA repair and toxin flushing occurs during sleep. Do not compromise on this physiological requirement of the body. d) Stress management should be done

by focusing on positive inputs and keeping company with people who influence you in a positive way. Stress is subject to how any situation is processed. Be objective when deciding on gains and trade offs of the available solutions for any situation. Do not hesitate to seek help when required rather than getting mentally worked up. e) Stay clear from smoking and other recreative substance abuse that accelerates body into disease states.

Target optimal blood pressure readings <130/80mmHg, an HbA1c <5.6, Lipid levels as per the risk profile determined by expert doctors.

There is no doubt that practising a heathy lifestyle and being compliant with treatment to achieve the targets will prevent progress if not reverse from disease to health. However, despite awareness, it is noted that a large proportion of preventable cardiovascular events still happen due to poor willingness to make changes.

Outdoor adventures await

Discover the charm of Madrid beyond the city limits by exploring the UNESCO Triangle: San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Alcala de Henares, and Aranjuez. Uncover scenic trails in Chinchón, Patones, and Pelayos de la Presa for cycling and hiking, or delve into the ancient beauty of Hayedo de Montejo, Parque Nacional de Guadarrama, and Rascafría. Madrid’s charming villages and the Sierra Norte are perfect for fresh air and breathtaking landscapes, including the historic castle of Manzanares El Real and the stone walls of Buitrago del Lozoya.

Corral de la Morería

During my stay in Madrid, I had the unforgettable experience of visiting Corral de la Morería. From the moment I stepped inside, I could feel the rich history and passion that have made this place a legendary institution since its opening in 1956. The atmosphere was electric, charged with the anticipation of an evening filled with the finest flamenco performances.

As I settled into my seat, I couldn't help but admire the elegance of the venue, where every detail was meticulously crafted to provide an immersive experience. The show began, and I was immediately enamoured by the incredible talent on stage. The performers, a mix of contemporary dance stars and accomplished solo artists, delivered a mesmerising display of flamenco that was both powerful and deeply emotional. The intensity of the dancing, the soulful singing, and the skilful guitar playing transported me to another world. It was a performance that not only met but exceeded my expectations, appealing to both seasoned flamenco aficionados and newcomers like me.

The gastronomic experience at Corral de la Morería was

equally exceptional. Dining at Restaurante Tablao, I had the pleasure of tasting the creations of Chef David García, whose expertise has earned the restaurant a Michelin star and three Repsol suns. The menu was a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, with each dish reflecting the chef's deep understanding of contemporary haute cuisine. The flavours were exquisite, and the presentation was artful, making the dining experience as memorable as the flamenco performance itself.

What truly sets Corral de la Morería apart is its commitment to excellence in every aspect. It’s no wonder that this tablao has been recognised as the world's best by the International Cante de las Minas Flamenco Festival and is featured in the iconic travel book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. The venue has also received the prestigious City of Madrid Award, placing it among the city's most revered cultural landmarks.

My night at Corral de la Morería was an extraordinary journey through the heart of Spanish culture, where the fusion of top-tier flamenco and haute cuisine created an experience that I will cherish forever. If you're ever in Madrid, this is one place you simply cannot miss.

What to do in Madrid: A family-friendly luxe destination

Madrid seamlessly merges historic charm with contemporary vibrance, offering a wealth of lavish experiences for the whole family. Here’s a closer look at some of Madrid’s most luxurious and must-visit spots:

El Retiro Park: El Retiro Park, often compared to New York's Central Park, is indeed part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Landscape of Light,” which was designated in 2021. This expansive green space, once a royal retreat, now offers leisurely walks among fountains, sculptures, and scenic paths, making it an ideal family destination. It embodies the luxury and tranquillity of Madrid, providing a serene escape within the city.

Palacio de Cristal: Nestled within El Retiro Park, this stunning glass and iron palace, built in 1887, reflects architectural elegance. Surrounded by lush greenery and a serene lake, it’s a perfect place for a relaxing family afternoon.

Catedral de la Almudena: This grand neo-Gothic cathedral, with its blend of modern and traditional architecture, stands as a symbol of Madrid’s ability to marry history with contemporary elegance.

Flamenco Tablao: Experience the passion of Spain’s most iconic cultural expression in Madrid, the world’s capital of Flamenco and the birthplace of the Flamenco Tablao. Enjoy a night of vibrant flamenco performances at one of the city's renowned venues, paired with exquisite Spanish cuisine for an unforgettable evening of music, dance, and luxury.

Walking tour: Experience Madrid’s luxury on a guided walking tour designed for families. Led by locals, these tours provide insights into the city’s rich history, stunning architecture, and culinary delights, uncovering hidden gems in style.

Triangle of Art: Madrid is a mecca for art lovers, featuring the "Triangle of Art" – the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums. These institutions represent the pinnacle of cultural exploration. With over 70 remarkable museums, Madrid offers a dizzying array of artistic experiences.

Watch a football game: In Madrid, football is more than a sport–it’s a splendid experience. Whether at Santiago Bernabéu or Wanda Metropolitano, watching Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid is an exhilarating family outing that dives into the city's rich sports culture.

Day trip in Madrid: Madrid’s central location is ideal for exploring nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the greater Madrid region, including San Lorenzo de El Escorial and Alcalá de Henares.

Royal Palace of Madrid: One of Europe’s largest and most grand palaces, the Royal Palace boasts over 3,418 rooms filled with masterpieces by artists such as Goya and Velazquez. A visit here offers a glimpse into the expensive history of Spanish royalty. Don't miss the newly opened Royal Collections Gallery, which showcases some of Spain’s most valuable art and historical artifacts.

Plaza de Cibeles: Home to the iconic Cibeles Fountain and surrounded by legendary Spanish architecture, this plaza is a symbol of Madrid’s grandeur. It’s also the celebration spot for Real Madrid’s victories, adding to its fancy allure.

Temple of Debod: An ancient Egyptian temple gifted to Spain and rebuilt in Madrid, the Temple of Debod offers a unique blend of history and luxury, providing one of the best sunset views in the city.

Plaza Mayor: Plaza Mayor is a historic square in the heart of Madrid, renowned for its grand architecture and famous bocadillo de calamares–calamari sandwiches. This 400-year-old plaza is surrounded by charming attractions and some of the city's best cafés and restaurants, making it a central and vibrant spot in Madrid’s historic district.

Puerta del Sol: Madrid's most famous square is a bustling hub of history and modern splendour, offering a mix of classic architecture, sprightly public art, and chic cafés where you can relax and soak in the city's pulse.

These spots prove that Madrid is an opulent destination where family-friendly luxury is woven into its very fabric.

PORSCHE CENTRE DOHA BRINGS THIRD-GENERATION

Porsche Centre Doha unveiled the all-new third-generation Panamera to guests at its regional debut in Qatar. The new Panamera features a bold design, enhanced E-Hybrid powertrains, and advanced suspension, offering unmatched dynamic performance and driving comfort.

VIP guests, media, and prospective customers in Qatar celebrated the debut of the third-generation Porsche Panamera at a glamorous event at Porsche Centre Doha, Medina Centrale, The Pearl-Qatar. The new Panamera, showcasing its enhanced sporting character with powerful drive systems and innovative technology, including the Porsche Active Ride suspension system, promises a perfect blend of comfort and dynamic performance. The event, themed in amber gold, highlighted the striking new Madeira Gold Metallic colour, setting the stage for an evening of luxury and entertainment.

“The Porsche Panamera has always been an important and much-loved model for Qataris with its exclusive mix of Porsche

performance in a luxurious and spacious, four-door saloon shape,” the chairman and CEO of Porsche Centre Doha, Salman Jassem Al Darwish said.

“The third-generation Panamera introduces important new technologies that not only contribute to improved road holding with a new state-of-the-art active air suspension but also delivers more power and torque than ever before with the option of four E-Hybrid powertrains that deliver greater efficiency and an improved range.”

The new Panamera’s dynamic and elegant design refreshes its proportions, while a reimagined, driver-focused interior elevates the driving experience.

Superior feel with state-of-the-art suspension systems

The new Panamera already comes with dual-chamber two-valve air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard. The two-valve technology separates the rebound and compression stages of the damper control and therefore offers an even wider range between comfort and sportiness: the system noticeably dampens impacts from transverse joints and road damage while, at the same time, ensuring more body stability in dynamic driving situations. The car’s handling can be further improved thanks to optional all-wheel steering.

In addition, the innovative Porsche Active Ride active suspension system is available as an option for the E-Hybrid models of the new Panamera. This system surpasses other suspension concepts in all relevant parameters and offers an unprecedented range between driving comfort and driving dynamics. The basis for this is newly developed active shock absorbers – also with two-valve technology – each connected to an electrically operated hydraulic pump. This generates a volume flow in the damper according to demand and can therefore build up forces between the body and wheels in a lightning-fast, highly precise and targeted manner, which counteract and almost completely compensate for the forces resulting from the road excitation. A weight-saving singlechamber air-suspension system complements this technology.

The chassis always keeps the body of the Panamera flat, even during dynamic braking, steering and acceleration manoeuvres. With a smooth ride, the system absorbs bumps almost completely. In dynamic driving situations, the Porsche Active Ride suspension system ensures a perfect connection to the road thanks to a balanced distribution of wheel loads.

If the corresponding mode is activated, the suspension can overcompensate for pitching and rolling tendencies to reduce the acceleration forces acting on the occupants. In this setting, the new Panamera leans into the corners like a motorcycle would. It pulls the front down when accelerating and the rear when decelerating. When stationary, the Porsche Active Ride suspension system lifts the body to a comfortable entry or exit height.

Enhanced e-performance with upgraded engines

Porsche introduces four efficient E-Hybrid powertrains for the new Panamera, catering to high demand. These variants offer improved performance, range, and efficiency. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid leads with a revised 4.0-liter V8 turbo engine paired with a new 140 kW (190 PS) electric motor, producing a combined output of 500 kW (680 PS) and 930 Nm of torque. Integrated into a redesigned eight-speed PDK transmission, this system sheds weight and optimises cooling.

The Turbo E-Hybrid accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 315 km/h. Its 25.9 kWh battery

provides up to 91 km of electric range and charges in 2 hours and 39 minutes with a new 11 kW AC charger.

The Panamera and Panamera 4 also debut with a refined 2.9-litre V6 turbo engine, now delivering 260 kW (353 PS) and 500 Nm of torque, boosting acceleration and top speed.

Luxurious sportiness inside and out

The new Panamera maintains its signature lines and proportions, measuring 5,052 mm in length (5,202 mm for the Executive version), 1,937 mm in width, and 1,423 mm in height (1,428 mm for the Executive). Its updated design gives the sports sedan an even more dynamic and expressive look. A new air intake above the front licence plate meets the increased cooling needs, while the redesigned window line enhances the sedan's sporty profile. The rear window seamlessly integrates with the car's body, creating a cohesive rear design.

Inside, the Porsche Driver Experience cockpit balances digital and analog controls, with key driving elements aligned along the driver's axis. The gear selector lever, mode switch, and assistance controls are all within easy reach, allowing the driver to stay focused on the road.

An optional 10.9-inch passenger display adds to the driving experience, showing vehicle performance data and controlling the infotainment system. The display is positioned to prevent distraction for the driver.

Distinctive Panamera turbo E-Hybrid

The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid stands out as the performance flagship in the lineup. Its exterior features a unique rear apron with painted diffuser panels, a body-coloured front apron, dark bronze chrome-plated tailpipes, and optional centre-lock wheels, available for other models as well.

Exclusive Turbonite accents enhance its look, appearing on the side window strips, Turbo logo, and Porsche crest on the bonnet, wheels, and steering wheel. Inside, Turbonite details combine with carbon elements, creating a sporty atmosphere, evident in the central rev-counter and centre console controls.

The Panamera comes standard with Matrix LED headlights, and the high-resolution HD Matrix LED lighting system is available as an option, offering new features such as lanespecific illumination with a range of up to 600 meters.

The new Porsche Panamera, now available for order, includes upgraded standard features such as two-valve dualchamber air suspension, LED matrix headlights, ParkAssist, driving mode switch on the steering wheel, a cooled smartphone compartment with inductive charging, and an enhanced fine dust filter with GPS-supported automatic airrecirculation.

Produced at Porsche's Leipzig factory, the Panamera's third generation benefits from recent plant modifications to accommodate its production.

No stranger to success: Mutaz Barshim

No stranger to success: Mutaz Barshim

With this Olympic Games, I conclude my Olympic journey, and I had the honour to have stood on the podium in all my participations.

#WhatGravity

Mutaz Barshim became the first male high jumper to win three consecutive gold medals at the World Championships – 2017 (London), 2019 (Doha), 2022 (Eugene) and holds the Asian record at 2.43m. His victory in Doha in 2019 marked him as the first male high jumper to defend a world championship title successfully. His bronze for Qatar at the 2024 Games will now sit alongside his gold from 2020 and the silvers he won in 2012 (London Olympics) and 2016 (Rio Olympics), making him the first athlete representing an Arabic country to win four Olympic medals. Yet Barshim’s - like any sportsperson’s - is also peppered with challenges and comebacks. QH traces his crowning moments alongside his challenges.

Born to Sudanese parents residing in Doha, Barshim's father played a pivotal role in his early interest in athletics. Watching his father (who competed internationally in race walking and distance running) on television and attending events sparked his enthusiasm. Despite starting with walking and long-distance running, it was the encouragement of his then club coach Helmy Abosalama that led him to focus on high jump, post which Barshim started training regularly in Poland under the guidance of Stanislaw Szczyrba, whose dedication and innovative coaching methods have been instrumental in Barshim's success.

After collecting his medal at Paris Olympics, Barshim confirmed that this was his final Olympic Games.

“My feelings of pride today are beyond words,” he posted on Instagram.
