Marrying innovation with continuous improvement in healthcare

Dr. Iyabo Tinubu-Karch, CEO of Sidra Medicine speaks to QatarHappeningon her leadership position, relevant global healthcare trends for women’s and children’s health and the role played by technology in treatment.

QH: How has your leadership at Sidra Medicine evolved since transitioning from a board member to CEO?

Dr Tinubu-Karch: Stepping from the boardroom into the CEO role at Sidra Medicine has been an incredible journey. While my board role focused on strategic oversight and high-level decisions, my current position has immersed me in the daily operations of Sidra Medicine and playing a much more strategic and hands-on role in the direction we want to take our women’s and children’s healthcare services.

One of the biggest shifts for me has been getting to know our people on a deeper level. Witnessing their commitment firsthand is truly inspiring and reinforces my responsibility to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

As CEO, I need to ensure that as an institution, we are agile and adaptable. This means being committed to nurturing a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. By embracing change and fostering a growth mindset, we can ensure that Sidra Medicine remains at the forefront of women's and children's healthcare and constantly innovating and transforming lives.

QH: What role do you see technology playing in advancing clinical care at Sidra Medicine?

Dr Tinubu-Karch: Our commitment to embracing the latest technological advancements is essential for Sidra Medicine to remain a leader in patient care. Technology is the cornerstone of our ability to expand and enhance our clinical services, ensuring we provide exceptional care for women and children in Qatar and the region.

Our application of technology spans administrative, clinical care and research expertise.

One of the ways we have enhanced our expertise in precision medicine, is by implementing Whole Genome Sequencing, an advanced diagnostic tool for our patients. This allows us to analyse a person’s entire genome to identify disease-linked genetic variations, which enables the swift detection of most genetic issues that might otherwise go undiagnosed. Now we can eliminate the need to send samples abroad, reducing turnaround times for a diagnosis from months to weeks.

We have become a regional pioneer in gene therapy, harnessing the power of technology to revolutionise treatment options for genetic diseases. We made history as the first hospital in Qatar and the fifth hospital to administer Elevidys worldwide, a revolutionary gene therapy medication for treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). We are also the sole provider of gene therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in Qatar.

We have also established the first pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant programme in Qatar, in partnership with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This programme offers lifesaving treatment options for children with specific conditions.

We continually redefine surgical excellence and champion minimally invasive procedures thanks to technology and the expertise of our surgeons who implement pioneering and ground-breaking techniques.

We are immensely proud of our genomics programme where we work in close collaboration with partners including Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Precision Health Institute and the Qatar Genome Program. We've made significant strides in this field, having analysed the genes of over 40,000 individuals.

QH: How has your background in geriatric medicine shaped your approach to healthcare leadership?

Dr Tinubu-Karch: My background in geriatric medicine has profoundly influenced my approach to healthcare leadership. In geriatrics, you learn to consider not only the immediate medical issues but also the broader context of a patient’s life – how their environment, family support, mental well-being, and social circumstances all influence their health.

Geriatric medicine emphasises long-term health and quality of life, not just treating immediate symptoms. This philosophy is central to Sidra Medicine’s approach. We’re not only focused on acute interventions but also on providing sustainable, comprehensive care that supports the overall well-being of our patients and their families. My background has instilled in me a deep respect for the continuity of care, which we strive to deliver at every stage of a patient’s journey here.

QH: What innovations in healthcare are you currently focused on implementing at Sidra Medicine?

Dr Tinubu-Karch: At Sidra Medicine, innovation is at the heart of our mission to provide exceptional care for children and women. We are constantly striving to achieve new milestones and push the boundaries of healthcare through several key initiatives.

One key area is our Clinical Trials Program, which focuses on trials directly benefiting children in the Arab region. The trials could offer children the chance to receive lifesaving treatment whether it is a new drug, therapy, device or procedure–before it becomes widely available.

We are strategically seeking to integrate Artificial Intelligence into our operations to empower our patients and optimise our workflow. AI's analytical power accelerates and streamlines our ability to identify disease patterns from patient data. This translates to earlier diagnoses, more targeted treatments, and ultimately, a better quality of life for our patients.

Relevant global healthcare trends for women’s and children’s health:

• Precision Medicine: The personalisation of healthcare is one of the most significant advancements in modern medicine. We are deeply committed to representing the unique needs of Middle Eastern populations. We recognise that many current treatment options lack effectiveness due to a historical underrepresentation of Arab, African-Arab, and Persian-Arab genetics in research.

• Rise in Doctor Recommendations: A recent McKinsey & Company survey found that consumers are taking greater control over their health–and expect companies to provide effective, science-backed solutions. As people look to avoid deceptive marketing of products and services that are not backed by science or a credible clinical expert, healthcare provider recommendations have become important once again. The survey found that consumers said they are most influenced by doctors’ recommendations when seeking care related to mindfulness, sleep, and overall health.

• Health Literacy and Patient Empowerment: The shift towards patient-centred care models is transforming the healthcare landscape. Our healthcare leaders are empowering patients to actively participate in their healthcare decisions by promoting health literacy. This trend is especially important for women, who often make healthcare decisions for their families.

• Mental Health: There is a growing recognition of the importance of mental health, particularly among women and adolescents. Destigmatising mental health issues and integrating mental health services into our care are key steps in ensuring a holistic approach to health.

I’ve had the privilege of being part of pre-opening teams for three major waterparks in Dubai and Ireland and have experience managing operations in 5-star resorts across the Middle East and Africa, which have sharpened my understanding of delivering a high-quality guest experience. At Desert Falls, my goal is to build on the park's

success by ensuring that every visitor feels like they’re on a vacation, even though we’re just an hour outside of Doha.

One of our recent initiatives, Monday Madness, has been a great success, attracting guests who might not have the opportunity to visit on weekends. This promotion has opened up the park to a wider audience, offering them the chance to enjoy our attractions and world-class waterpark experience at a convenient time.

QH: How do you balance fun and adventure with safety in such a diverse park?

Du Plooy: Balancing fun and adventure with safety is fundamental to our mission at Desert Falls. To achieve this, we collaborate with third-party safety consultants who regularly review and test our safety systems and procedures, ensuring they meet the highest standards. Our dedicated team of lifeguard instructors continually trains our lifeguards in the latest emergency response techniques.

In 2023, Desert Falls was the only waterpark in the region honoured with the prestigious Jeff Ellis & Associates, Inc. Platinum Award for Aquatic Safety, a testament to our unwavering commitment to safety.

QH: What new attractions or developments can visitors look forward to in the near future?

Events in Qatar: Opening up economic growth; fillip

to cultural diversity

Qatar's National Vision 2030 lays the roadmap for the country's development across various sectors, including economic, social, human and environmental development (the four pillars of the Vision Statement). Future events play a crucial role in achieving the vision by contributing to economic diversification, enhancing social and cultural heritage, and building on human capabilities.

Qatar National Vision 2030 came with a purpose – to move the country away from its over-reliance on its hydrocarbon booty because of the finite nature of the resource. With the vision out in summer 2008, the MICE industry in Qatar went on an overdrive – on the spiral already created by the Asian Games held in winter 2006 which saw the participation of 45 countries with 40 sports represented.

Soon after came the 2022 FIFA bid win by Qatar in December 2010 – and it’s a documented fact that on the back of the mega-event, the Qatari economy expanded by 8 percent in the last quarter of 2021 (see SIDEBAR 2 - “Building tangible and intangible assets”)

With a sizeable proportion of the world’s population able to reach Qatar by a relatively short-duration flight, given its strategic location in the Middle East, coupled with its high level of safety and security, all contribute to making Qatar an attractive hub for hosting global events and drawing regional and global visitors.

To boot, Qatar offers a modern infrastructure with excellent connectivity through its state-ofthe-art international airport, a welldeveloped transportation network, and a wide range of brand-new hotels and resorts for all levels of travellers' budgets. This accessibility makes it easy and inclusive for a wide range of international visitors.

Additionally, the country’s rich cultural heritage makes it an appealing destination for events offering a diverse range of cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries, and heritage sites where attendees can experience Qatari hospitality, traditional music, and Qatari cuisine, adding a unique cultural flavour to their experience.

Over the years, Qatar has garnered global acclaim as a true trailblazer in mega events, hosting the Geneva Motor Show, Formula 1, Expo 2023 Doha and Web Summit 2024.

What the Web Summit 2024 attained for Qatar

During Web Summit Qatar 2024, 24 memoranda of understanding were signed between leading entities, including an agreement between Qatar’s Government Communications Office (GCO) and TikTok, for the social media giant to launch its first creative studio in the region in Doha. The launch of the Digital Agenda 2030 by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology live on stage at the event also provided a clear roadmap for Qatar’s vision of a knowledge-based economy.

On Web Summit’s Center Stage, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani announced a US$1 billion investment by the Qatar Investment Authority in regional venture capital to support entrepreneurs and startups. Aligned with the Startup Qatar initiative, which registered over 200 companies in four days, this reinforces Qatar’s role as a premier investment hub.

Regarding economic impact, Web Summit Qatar attendees spent an average of QR 11,000 during their stay, contributing millions to the local economy, booking over 38,000 hotel nights, with the average attendee stay in Qatar lasting six days.

Building tangible and intangible assets

PwC, in its report entitled: “A winning economic strategy- Hosting events as catalysts for growth” has detailed out the impacts of mega-events on the Qatari economy.

Cutting-edge technology: Qatar invested in state-of-the-art technology to enhance event delivery and provide a hassle free visitor experience through seamless mobility, real-time communication, digital ticketing and access control, and a wide range of interactive experiences.

Public infrastructure: Qatar's meticulously planned and well-developed transport network can effortlessly accommodate the influx of event attendees, further bolstering the logistical efficiency of mega-events.

Sporting infrastructure: The country boasts a collection of world-class, contemporary stadiums that serve as a testament to architectural excellence. These stadiums are designed for adaptability, ensuring their continued legacy beyond the events.

Global brand and influence: With a sterling reputation for successfully hosting high-profile and complex events, Qatar holds a prominent and influential position on the global stage. This reputation extends far beyond its borders, attracting partners, sponsors, and participants from around the world.

Proprietary IP: Qatar possesses a suite of proprietary products, services, and technologies carefully crafted to enhance the event experience and engage fans in novel and exciting ways.

Brand partners: An impressive portfolio of blue-chip partnerships across various sectors and an extensive network of relationships with key individuals, reinforces Qatar's status as an attractive host.

Tourism Facilities: A well-established network of high-quality hotels, hospitality venues, and captivating destinations ensures visitors enjoy a unique and memorable experience while attending mega events.

Web Summit Qatar to connect Middle Eastern startups with global investors and media

Dima Wahbeh, deputy country manager, Qatar at Web Summit, talks Aparajita

Mukherjee

through the second edition of Web Summit in Qatar in 2025, the lessons that the first edition has taught the organisers and the boost that this event brings to Qatar

QH: The first edition of Web Summit in Qatar was one of a kind. What kind of changes and improvements are you bringing to the format of the second one in 2025?

Wahbeh: In its inaugural year, Web Summit Qatar gathered the largest and most globally diverse cohort of startups to ever gather in the region – more than 1,000 startups from 80 countries – to connect with a new generation of investors and partners hailing from countries such as Qatar, the US, Egypt, Brazil, Italy, Nigeria, the UK, India, and beyond.

At Web Summit Qatar 2024, the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), Tik Tok, Snap, Microsoft, AWS, Meta, and more took part: and we expect to see the same calibre of international tech companies, including Open AI, Amazon and Microsoft – as well as thousands of young promising entrepreneurs from around the world - join us in Doha in February 2025.

Many of these startups from Web Summit Qatar 2024 have received funding off the back of connections made at Web Summit Qatar. According to Crunchbase, a cumulative US$243m+ has been raised by Blend, Colendi, OTO, YoLa Fresh, Kebotix, Chowdeck, Intron Health, PairedWorld, ORA Technologies, and KalPay. Web Summit Qatar offers an incredible platform to startups, and we are excited to see the next generation of startups join us in Doha again next February.

For the second year, many of the biggest wealth funds and Venture Capitalists (VC) in the world will be at Web Summit Qatar to connect with 15,000 attendees, 1,000 startups, 400 investors and global leaders in Doha. Increasingly, some of the most active players in the technology industry are sovereign

wealth funds, the most active of which are in the Middle East, and all of them will be at Web Summit Qatar 2025. So if you’re a fast-growing company thinking about your next funding round, a reasonable place to spend a day or two is Web Summit Qatar. We recently announced our first 25 speakers for Web Summit Qatar 2025, and will be announcing more shortly. We look forward to sharing more details about Web Summit Qatar in the weeks ahead.

QH: What are the changes to the startup ecosystem in Qatar that have happened ever since the first Web Summit that was held earlier in 2024?

Wahbeh: We were delighted to see many impactful events take place at Web Summit Qatar 2024 showcasing the potential of the country’s startup ecosystem. On Opening Night at Web Summit Qatar 2024, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, announced that the QIA would be investing US$1 billion in venture capital funds to support entrepreneurs and startups in Qatar. This announcement demonstrated Qatar’s dedication to becoming an attractive destination for startups to establish themselves and grow, and cements Qatar’s status as a global startup hub.

Meanwhile 24 memoranda of understanding were signed at Web Summit Qatar 2024: and the event saw the successful registration of more than 200 companies through the Startup Qatar initiative.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology also launched the Digital Agenda 2030 live on stage, outlining a roadmap for a knowledge-based economy in Qatar.

The announcements and initiatives have had a hugely positive impact on the Qatar startup ecosystem, and we believe that this will continue to grow in the years ahead and during Web Summit Qatar’s tenure in Doha.

QH: In your experience of holding such summits all over, do policy changes happen as a result of holding such events? Is there some monitoring mechanism that Web Summit have?

Wahbeh: Host cities play a crucial role in Web Summit events, collaborating closely with organisers to enhance the experience for attendees and bolster the city’s positioning as a global startup hub. Naturally we work with host cities to assess that impact, and demonstrate the success we can help deliver.

For instance, Lisbon’s position as a global innovation hub has grown significantly since it began hosting Web Summit, with Web Summit helping to attract investment and connect Portugal to international markets. Inward investment in Portugal has soared over the past decade: Web Summit partners that have opened offices in Portugal include Google, BMW, Amazon, Daimler, Huawei and Cloudflare.

Portugal’s startup ecosystem is also making strides. According to Startup Portugal’s latest Startup & Entrepreneurial

Events Bonanza

Ecosystem Report report, 70% of Portugal’s current startups were founded in the past five years, with 2021 and 2022 seeing the highest levels of startup creation.

There are now 4,073 startups in Portugal, up from 821 startups in 2016, when the first Web Summit Lisbon took place – an increase of 496% over this period. The number of unicorns in Portugal has grown from 1 to 7 between 2016 and 2022: all have attended Web Summit.

Additionally, the economic impact Web Summit has had in Lisbon has been significant, with the data showing Web Summit generating more than €200 million worth of economic activity the week of the event.

Host cities are motivated to host events such as Web Summit to position themselves as key players in the global tech community, ultimately driving local economic growth and innovation.

QH: On the economic front, can you talk us through some of the highlights?

Wahbeh: Hosting a Web Summit event has a significant impact on the local economy, bringing attendees from across the world to a host city for a number of days. For Web Summit Qatar 2024, over 15,000 attendees came to Doha, booking over 38,000 nights in Doha hotels, and 19,000 flight segments. The average stay in Doha for an attendee was six days, and the average spend was QR11,000+, injected directly into the local economy.

QH: With what expectations is Web Summit coming to Qatar a second time? And what, in your opinion, do such events contribute to the MICE index of a country such as Qatar?

Wahbeh: Web Summit Qatar aims to further connect Middle Eastern startups with global investors and media, enhancing visibility and collaboration opportunities.

By hosting large-scale events like this, Qatar is positioning itself as a burgeoning tech hub in the Middle East, as a key player in the MICE sector, having a positive effect on Qatar’s MICE index.

Our first year in Doha exceeded all of our expectations, with over 15,000 attendees, more than 1,000 startups – the most of any first year Web Summit event – and over 400 investors all coming together in Qatar.

Web Summit Qatar 2024 is the most geographically diverse event that we run anywhere in the world. Our event in Europe has attendees from well over 100 countries, so from all over the world, but participation is heavily skewed toward Europe and North America. This is not the case with Qatar, where it is significantly more geographically diverse, and we expect this to continue next year with the second edition of Web Summit Qatar.

All of this in our first year in Doha! We can’t wait to grow the event in 2025 and into the future, and to continue to have a positive effect on the local economy in Doha and Qatar.

Web Summit Qatar: A game-changer for middle east innovation

Dima Wahbeh, deputy country manager, Qatar at Web Summit, shared her insights on the significance of Web Summit Qatar:

“Web Summit Qatar represents the opportunity for Web Summit to convene technology’s leaders in an already fastgrowing tech scene, as it brings together and empowers a new generation of startup founders across the Middle East, Africa, India and beyond. Hosting Web Summit’s first event in the Middle East in Doha reflects Qatar’s rapid rise as a global hub for innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship, and the country’s strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa makes it an ideal meeting point for innovators from diverse regions.

The inaugural Web Summit Qatar in February 2024 firmly positioned Qatar as a premier global event destination. Surpassing expectations, it attracted over 15,000 attendees from 118 countries–more than double the forecast–and hosted 1,043 startups, the highest ever for a firstyear event. This diverse startup cohort connected investors and partners from around the world, including nearly 200 from Africa and over 100 from the Impact programme, which promotes tech for good. Impressively, almost a third of the startups were founded by women.

Web Summit Qatar has laid a strong foundation for future events, fostering an environment for collaboration and growth. We are excited to continue this journey and look forward to returning to Qatar for the next edition in February 2025.”

Escape into the nomadic land of KYRGYZSTAN!

“When I planned for my fast-tracked trip to Kyrgyzstan, little did I know about this hidden gem in Central Asia. I wished I had planned for more days. However, the beautiful three days spent in the lap of Nature is a memory etched for life,” writes Avishikta Sarkar.

When I told people I was travelling to Kyrgyzstan, many did not know where it was. Lying in the lap of Tian Shan and Pamir Mountain ranges, this eastern Central Asian country is still fairly unknown in the broad "tourist" community. The country is a nature lovers’ paradise and a great escape from demanding city lives that most of us live today.

I reached Bishkek the capital of Kyrgyzstan with very little expectation but was blown away by the sheer beauty of the capital from the moment I stepped outside the airport. Bishkek has a big city vibe, yet it’s retained its humble feel with surrounding snow-capped mountains dotted with beautiful parks almost at every square of the centre. My day started with the city tour. First stop was the Central Mosque, built in an Ottoman revival style, it is considered as one of the largest mosques in Central Asia. Close to the Central Mosque, was the Victory Square, dedicated to the nation’s victory in World War II.

Next stop was the main square of the city – Ala-Too Square. Famous for its stunning mountain scenery, Ala-Too Square is in the centre of Bishkek and combines several attractions. On its perimeter is the State Historical Museum. The museum was a great visit to know about the origin of the Kyrgz clan and the transformation of the tribe to its modern times avatar. Outside the museum, stands the 45-metre flagpole with a national flag, guarded by a guard of honour which has a change of duty ceremony every hour, that is worth watching.

Ala-Archa National Park

My next destination was my highlight of the day. About an hour drive from the capital is the picturesque gorge Ala-Archa National Park complete with a mountain river rushing down like a rushing stream, high snowy peaks, juniper slopes, alpine meadows covered with a carpet of flowers. It was the most amazing time spent in this serene place, feeding birds and squirrels on the trail. Ala-Archa has many different trails and hikers have the freedom to explore in any direction – whether it's to a plateau offering magnificent views of the gorge, along the tranquil Ala-Archa river, or towards the Broken Heart Stone, from where breathtaking panoramic views unfold. Due to lack of time, I could not complete a full hiking trail but reached up to the panoramic view to enjoy the breathtaking view of the valley with river streams felt just like a painting. All in all an amazing experience.

Kyrgyzstan has many scenic places and the two very famous lakes are Issyk Kul and Son Kul. Since I had very less time, I had to choose between either of these two destinations. Both lakes have gorgeous landscape with its own unique beauty. Issyk Kul is the larger lake and has lot of activities to do, while Son Kul is 3500 metres up in the mountains and have more of insane remoteness. I wanted to experience the remote destination, so I chose for an overnight trip to Son Kul Lake.

Next morning I was picked up by my guide and we headed straight towards the breathtaking journey to Son Kul lake. On the way we stopped at Burana Tower, a large minaret in the Chui Valley. I got a chance to climb to the top of the ancient tower, which was climbing a steep narrow staircase, where a beautiful view of the Chui valley and the Tien-Shan mountains open.

We then continued our journey to Son Kul, passing through several small but charming villages. On the way there was the Boom gorge and Orto-Tokoy Water Reservoir. This place is quaint, from the panoramic view. It was a great spot to stop for pictures and continue to Son-Kul lake.

Yurt experience

At Kochkor we changed our vehicle to switch to a 4x4 mode for the rugged mountain ride ahead. Here we started our elevation to Son-Kol lake. The surrounding view changes colour and texture all the time, from stony dunes to green hills. Unforgettable drive through the rustic, raw mountains, meeting peacefully grazing mountain horses on the way. Also, in the vast meadows of the pass, the mountain edelweiss grows.

We reached Son Kul around late afternoon and finally checked into my yurt camp. Yurts are nomadic tents and it was worth the experience of spending a night in them. The peace and calmness around Son Kul Lake were enigmatic. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this was a no network zone, lights in the camp were out by midnight and no internet. It was a perfect place for digital detox, connect with nature and star gaze at night.

Next morning to my surprise it was snowing. The entire landscape changed to beautiful white canvas. After breakfast, we started descending to return to Bishkek. On our way back we drove through one of the most spectacular roads in Kyrgyzstan that lead to the Terkey Torpok Pass, which is over 3000m high to hike to the 33 Parrots Waterfall. There was more scenic beauty on the way back and enchanting landscape.

And that was a wrap to my intense but awesome tour with a promise to come back for more of Kyrgyzstan.

A SUSHI AFFAIR WITH A SKYLINE TO BOOT!

Azqa Haroon from QatarHappening recently experienced Sora Rooftop’s Monday Sushi Night at the Park Hyatt Doha, where sushi dreams really do come true. Set atop the stunning skyline of Msheireb, Sora Rooftop is the place to be for sushi lovers seeking an elevated, endless evening of Japanese indulgence with matching views that make every bite more memorable.

Walking into Sora Rooftop felt like stepping into an oasis of elegance and calm, with twinkling lights and the Doha skyline glistening below. The night began with a steaming bowl of miso soup and an assortment of appetisers, each one carefully created and full of flavour, hinting at the delights to come.

Then came the sushi platters –bountiful and beautifully presented, showcasing the delicate artistry of sashimi, maki rolls, and nigiri. Each piece felt like a personal creation by chef Fabio Fioravanti, featuring prime cuts of tuna, salmon, and sea bass sashimi that practically melted on the tongue. The freshness of the fish was striking, and the nigiri was layered over perfectly vinegared rice, offering that satisfying balance of umami and sweetness.

Maki rolls and endless refills

One of the best parts? If you fall in love with a specific roll or can’t get enough of the nigiri, Sora’s Monday sushi night offers unlimited refills. I loved going back for my favourite maki rolls, which ranged from classics to unexpected combinations such as spicy tuna with avocado and a bit of crunch that added

a fun twist. With each plate, it was easy to get swept up in the experience, whether enjoying old favourites or trying something new.

The concept of endless sushi made the experience feel indulgent yet relaxed – no rush, just the pleasure of sharing delicious bites with great company as the night unfolded. It’s the kind of dining experience where every plate feels like a new adventure, and every piece is just as satisfying as the last.

Enchanting

ambience on the rooftop terrace

As lovely as the sushi was, it’s the setting that truly takes Sora Rooftop to the next level. With the outdoor terrace overlooking the breathtaking Corniche, you can dine under the stars while enjoying the gentle Doha breeze. The terrace is perfect this time of the year, offering a beautiful escape from the city’s pace, with live piano music playing softly in the background. It’s intimate yet vibrant, with the skyline shimmering in the distance and the elegant ambience of Sora adding a touch of sophistication.

The atmosphere here has a certain magic to it. As we enjoyed our sushi, I found myself captivated by the view – a dreamy, almost cinematic backdrop that transformed the meal into something truly memorable. The combination of stunning views, expertly crafted sushi, and the camaraderie of friends made it feel like a much-needed, soulful retreat at the start of the week.

A deliciously unmissable Monday ritual

Priced at QR249 per person, Sora’s Monday Sushi Night is not just a meal; it’s a weekly ritual worth cherishing. The experience is perfect for reconnecting with friends or enjoying a peaceful night out, accompanied by incredible flavours and views that linger long after the meal is over. chef Fabio Fioravanti’s passion for Japanese cuisine shines through each dish, and the generous, refillable platters make it ideal for true sushi lovers.

A BRAND NEW SPREAD AT RUBY WU’S

Azqa Haroon handholds us through her experience of the new menu at Ruby Wu’s, nestled within the Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha. Known for its dedication to authentic Chinese cuisine and attention to detail, Ruby Wu’s has long established itself as a go-to for fans of fine Chinese dining in Doha. Now, with a refreshed menu under the guidance of chef Austin Yang, Ruby Wu’s brings an exciting mix of classic dishes with creative, contemporary twists.

Upon entering Ruby Wu’s, I was greeted by a warm, welcoming ambience – a perfect prelude to the culinary experience awaiting me. The revamped and utterly refreshing appetiser menu set the stage with vibrant tastes that were both familiar and new. The marinated beef with spicy cabbage in Szechuan sauce brought a bold and peppery kick, while the deep-fried prawns with wasabi mayonnaise delivered a crisp texture balanced by a spicy, creamy mayo. The chicken & shrimp dumplings were crafted with rich, savoury fillings, and the hot & sour soup offered a hearty, tangy start with its balanced spice.

The classic mains

Ruby Wu’s main courses highlight the expertise and creativity of chef Austin Yang, combining traditional Chinese techniques with contemporary tastes. The sweet and sour chicken was a delightful harmony of the tangy and the savoury with the tender chicken pieces glazed in a rich sauce that struck a perfect balance between sweet and spicy notes. Each bite of this dish presented a burst of twang, making it an ideal choice for those seeking classic Chinese comfort food.

The beef oyster sauce stir-fry, made with sliced Australian beef tenderloin, mushrooms, and broccoli, was a standout dish that showcased the chef’s attention to texture and seasoning. The beef was exceptionally tender, with the oyster sauce lending a depth of umami that elevated the dish, while the broccoli and mushrooms added earthy zing and a satisfying crunch. For seafood lovers, the sautéed lobster offered an exquisite touch of indulgence. Cooked to perfection, the lobster was succulent – its delicate sweetness complemented by subtle seasoning that highlighted the freshness of the meat without overpowering it.

Rice and noodles

Complementing the main dishes, Ruby Wu’s rice and noodle offerings are equally satisfying and thoughtfully crafted. The Yang Zhou fried rice was a beautifully balanced dish, with shrimp, egg, chicken, lettuce, and spring onion mixed with perfectly cooked rice grains. Each ingredient contributed a layer of wallop, from the delicate sweetness of shrimp to the

aromatic spring onion, making this a well-rounded and hearty choice.

The crispy egg noodles with prawns, scallop, squid, and vegetables added both visual appeal and diverse textures to the table. The noodles retained a satisfyingly crisp texture, while the seafood – prawns, scallop, and squid – were tender and juicy, pairing perfectly with the oyster sauce coating. The medley of vegetables brought freshness and crunch, enhancing the overall experience with each bite. This dish exemplified chef Yang’s knack for balancing textures and sapidity, offering diners a vibrant mix of crispy, tender, and savoury notes.

A sweet finale

No Chinese dining experience is complete without a sweet finale, and Ruby Wu’s new dessert offerings did not disappoint. The pandan pancake with palm sugar and coconut stuffing was another standout, combining the delicate gusto of pandan with a luscious coconut filling. This dessert’s texture was spot-on, soft and savoury, offering a comforting sweetness. Lastly, the pineapple tart with vanilla sauce was both delicate and decadent, with a buttery crust holding a sweet pineapple filling, drizzled with vanilla sauce for added richness.

Signature drinks

Throughout the meal, I enjoyed sampling Ruby Wu’s signature drinks, each carefully created to complement the vibrant tastes of the rich Chinese cuisine. Their cocktail menu offered an exotic selection that brings unique tartness for you, featuring intriguing blends of tropical fruits, spices, and fine spirits.

Whether you’re in search of traditional relish or intrigued by contemporary twists, Ruby Wu’s invites you to experience Chinese dining reimagined.

HIGH TEA AT AL JALSA LOUNGE: AN EFFORTLESS BLEND OF TRADITION, CHARM AND MODERNITY!

Azqa Haroon headed to Al Jalsa Lounge at Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, for an afternoon tea that was the perfect blend of elegance, relaxation, and a touch of Parisian charm. The afternoon was all about enjoying quality time, indulging in sweets, and having a cosy, girly catch-up with friends.

Created by head pastry chef Omer Aydemir, this afternoon tea service is available daily from 3pm to 8pm, presenting a tasteful blend of tradition and innovation in a tranquil ambience complemented by live piano music. Each element – from the savoury bites to the artistic desserts – displays chef Aydemir’s dedication to culinary finesse.

Savoury selection and artful sandwiches

The experience kicked off with a lineup of adorable, bitesized sandwiches – each one crafted for a delicate taste. The saffron bun with egg and mayonnaise came with a classic taste given a chic makeover, while the curried chicken and mango chutney sandwich brought a pop of colour and a fun hint of spice. And, of course, the cucumber and cream cheese sandwich was light and refreshing, a perfect pause before diving into the scones and sweets.

Scones and sweets

My favourite part of the spread? The warm scones, hands down! Served with rich clotted cream, strawberry and apricot jams, and an extra sprinkle of girly giggles, these were pure buttery bliss.

We lingered over each bite, letting the sweetness set the mood. Then came the stars of the dessert table: the pistachio brenton cake with a crisp sable crust and creamy ganache, followed by chef Aydemir’s signature Seyyah Cake, which combined fluffy chocolate mousse and crunchy layers – blissful and satisfying. The raspberry-laden framboiser cake added a fruity burst, and, of course, there were colourful French macarons that felt almost too pretty to eat (almost!).

A delightful afternoon escape

Priced at QR180 for one person or QR 235 for two, the afternoon tea experience at Al Jalsa Lounge is ideal for anyone looking for a refined yet relaxing break in the heart of Doha. Each item is meticulously created to create a memorable and enjoyable experience.

With its perfect combination of flavours, elegance, and tradition, the afternoon tea at Al Jalsa Lounge provides a beautiful escape, ideal for both social gatherings and quiet, peaceful moments.

HydraFacial at Espa: A combo of rejuvenation, cleansing, exfoliation & hydration

Manu G Parmar, the managing editor of QH, recently experienced the HydraFacial Signature Facial at Espa in the Mondrian Hotel – an exceptionally luxurious and results-driven treatment.

Espa's ambience was calming and elegant from the beginning, complemented by attentive staff who made the facial experience feel special. The HydraFacial is a comprehensive treatment that combines deep cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration to refresh and revitalise the skin. The esthetician assessed my skin's needs and employed advanced HydraFacial technology for a thorough yet gentle extraction, which was refreshingly comfortable – often a rarity in facial treatments. The serums used during the treatment left my skin feeling plump, hydrated, and visibly smoother, with a radiant glow that lasted for days.

As someone familiar with high-quality treatments, I truly appreciated the immediate and noticeable results from the HydraFacial at Espa. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a rejuvenating experience and remarkable skin results in a serene setting.
