From the desk
Dear Readers,
As we wrap up an eventful year, the December issue of Qatar Happening is brimming with festive cheer, culinary delights, and inspiring stories. The holiday season brings with it a sense of celebration, and we’ve curated a lineup that captures the spirit of joy and discovery.
On the interview front, we delve into the philosophy and vision of some of the most influential personalities shaping Qatar’s culinary and cultural scene. Paul Aoun, CEO of SAX International, shares insights into how customer evolution drives their business strategies and how SAX embraces Qatar’s vibrant cultural identity. Nobu Matsuhisa, the legendary chef and global restaurateur, speaks about his passion for blending Japanese traditions with Peruvian influences, redefining the dining experience worldwide.
We also had the pleasure of sitting down with Vilebrequin CEO Roland Herlory, following the grand debut of Vilebrequin La Plage at The St. Regis Doha. Herlory shares the brand’s journey into hospitality and its vision for bringing French Riviera elegance to Qatar. Adding to the star power, Turkish actors Esra Bilgiç and Birkan Sokullu, visiting Doha for the 12th Ajyal Film Festival, discuss their new series Doors of Destiny, cultural connections, and their creative processes.
On the food front, our team was awed by the transformation of Elements at Four Seasons Doha, where a Mediterranean-inspired menu and ambience redefine luxury dining. We also highlight festive dining offers from top restaurants and properties across Qatar to help you plan your celebrations.
In sports, we spotlight the dynamic founders of No Limits Qatar—Mohammed Al-Ahbabi, Tamim Al Kuwari, and Ahmad Al Naemi—who are championing active lifestyles and youth-focused racing experiences in Qatar.
Whether you’re looking to indulge in the festive season, explore culinary artistry, or draw inspiration from visionary leaders, this issue has something for everyone. Wishing you a joyful December and a fantastic start to the New Year!

Visit Qatar brought back 'Disney on Ice' to Doha
Visit Qatar welcomed back to Doha the exciting new instalment, Disney On Ice presents “Let’s Celebrate!”— an all-new show that delivered an unforgettable experience for families and Disney fans of all ages. Produced by Feld Entertainment Inc., the event took place from November 22 to 30 at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena.
As a family-friendly destination, Doha transported audiences into a world of imagination with Disney On Ice presents “Let’s Celebrate!”
Mickey Mouse, joined by Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy, embarked on a journey to discover his favourite memories. Using Mickey’s “Mouse Pad,” show hosts encouraged fans to be part of the action and help the gang venture through Disney stories, sharing memorable moments from treasured tales.
Along the way, families journeyed to a vibrant town in the mountains of Colombia, where they met Mirabel and her extraordinary family living in a magical casita in the charmed world of Encanto. They sailed away with Moana, who displayed her courage to save her island on a high-seas adventure alongside the demigod Maui. The audience travelled to the wintry world of Arendelle, where royal sisters Anna and Elsa discovered that true love is the most powerful magic of all. They experienced the mysterious magic of Fantasia as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice brought brooms to life.
Audiences were invited to “Live Your Story” alongside Disney Princesses as they used perseverance, determination, and hard work to inspire Mickey and children worldwide to share their favourite Disney memories. They also just kept swimming with Dory, Nemo, Marlin, and new pal Hank from Disney-Pixar’s Finding Dory and celebrated true friendship with Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and the Toy Story gang.
The magic of Disney was closer than ever when Disney On Ice presents “Let’s Celebrate!” brought joy and wonder to Doha!

The concept of SAX not just another restaurant!
Paul Aoun, CEO of SAX International sits with QH to explain their business philosophy, how the evolution of customer tastes is shaping the way SAX gears up to meet those and the impact that the host country has on the restaurant.
QH: What led you to the F&B and entertainment sectors, and how does this shape your vision for SAX?
Paul: My career started in international banking where I remained for 15 years. My extensive travelling during that period exposed me to various F&B concepts, building up my curiosity and passion towards this sector. My first steps in F&B occurred in 2006 when I acquired shares in the Iconic Beirut night club SKYBAR. In 2008, when the global economic crisis happened, I made the career leap from a restrictive banking environment to the exciting world of F&B. My vision of SAX emanates from a combination of corporate and entertainment experiences. SAX offers consistency, quality and integrity living up to our guests’ expectations, in a vibrant, dynamic, passionate, dreamy Room with Soul.
QH: Which trends do you see redefining customer experiences in F&B?
Paul: Guests are no longer satisfied with good food and cocktails alone. They are constantly searching for immersive experiences engaging all their senses. An eye-catching design with attention to detail, a story telling food and drinks menu coupled with matching elements of entertainment. The challenge is to keep the guest interested in coming back by constantly evolving on all levels.
QH: What unique challenges have you faced in expanding SAX globally?
Paul: Adapting the concept to local culture and habits is the primary challenge. You need to make this happen while keeping the identity of the concept unchanged. Finding local talent and expertise is another challenge; it increases the running costs restricting flexibility in the product you provide.
QH: Why did you choose Qatar for SAX’s expansion, and what sets this location apart?
Paul: We were lucky to partner up with Al Fardan Hospitality,
providing us with an opportunity to set foot in the Gulf. Qatar is an interesting market; it presented us with the challenge of adapting and constantly innovating in a rather unique challenging market. It was a chance to test the brand’s flexibility without losing identity.
QH: What strategies ensure memorable dining experiences at SAX?
Paul: I say these are very fine details that the guest never sees but always feels. These details have been acquired through years of experience in Guests’ experiences; from the time they drop off their car, to the time they take it back and everything in between. This is what sets us apart in terms of providing memorable experiences at SAX.
QH: What are your growth plans for SAX over the next five years?
Paul: The plan is to add three more locations – of which two in the GCC and one in Europe.
QH: How does SAX stay innovative while respecting local flavors and culture?
Paul: SAX as I mentioned is a flexible concept, while keeping the DNA of the brand intact. This is evident in the different menus created according to location, taking into consideration local eating habits and flavours. There is always a touch of the hosting country and culture in our menu and entertainment. We highly value our social responsibility and always act accordingly.
SHORT SHOTS:
Best holiday destination: Italy
Best advice received: Stay humble

Talking To Turkish stars shine at Ajyal Film Festival
Azqa Haroon had the opportunity to sit down with Turkish actors Esra Bilgiç and Birkan Sokullu during the 12 th Ajyal Film Festival in Doha, hosted at Fairmont Doha. The duo, who also highlighted their new TOD Studios series Doors of Destiny, shared their thoughts on the festival, cultural collaboration, and their craft.
QH: How has your experience been so far with Ajyal Film Festival and in Doha?
Bilgiç: It’s wonderful to be here at the 12th edition of this festival. Ajyal truly values young directors, actors, and creatives, giving them a platform to showcase their work. This is my second time in Doha, and while I’ve been busy with meetings, I hope to explore the Qatar National Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art, and enjoy the sea and sun soon.
Sokullu: This is my first visit to Doha and the Middle East. I’m excited to be part of Ajyal Film Festival and experience this city. It’s a unique and thrilling opportunity for me.
QH: Do you see any potential for collaboration between Qatari and Turkish actors in the future?
Bilgiç: Absolutely. There are Turkish series that have been adapted into Arab versions. We’d love to collaborate whenever a good opportunity arises. Emotions are universal and connect us all.
Sokullu: We share a similar culture, and the distance between Doha and Turkey isn’t far. It’s easier to build connections here than in other parts of the world.
QH: As actors, you’re often seen as ambassadors for
your country. How do you feel about representing Turkey at festivals like Ajyal?
Bilgiç: It’s always an honor to represent my country, especially at a place like this where our work is valued. It’s a great feeling to be appreciated and to showcase the richness of our culture and cinema.
QH: On a lighter note, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being an actor?
Sokullu: The high for me is the empathy I feel for the characters I portray. Acting allows me to connect deeply with different perspectives, and I find that incredibly exciting.
Bilgiç: I enjoy receiving recognition for my work, but what matters most is that the audience appreciates our performances. Exploring diverse characters and feeling empathy for them is very fulfilling.
QH: The Palestinian cause resonates deeply in both Qatar and Turkey. How is the Turkish film industry highlighting this issue?
Bilgiç: As a role model, I focus on doing my work to the best of my ability. If everyone contributes in their own way, it can bring about meaningful change.
A unique food journey across continents!
QH: Talk us through the philosophy of food that inspires you.
Matsuhisa: The Nobu style is simple. I prefer to keep things simple and let the ingredients work together and speak for themselves.
QH: Why did you opt to become a chef and not pursue any other profession?
Matsuhisa: My passion for food started at 10 or 11 years old when my older brother took me to a sushi restaurant for the first time. We sat at the counter and watched the chefs prepare the fish and hand it to us, piece by piece. I ate it in one bite, and I just said “wow”. At this time, I hadn’t started cooking yet, but I knew immediately that I wanted to be a chef.
Nobu Matsuhisa, the celebrity chef and restauranteur known for his fusion cuisine blending traditional Japanese dishes with Peruvian ingredients, in conversation with Aparajita Mukherjee discloses his passion for food, and Nobu – the global brand.
QH: Tell us 5 characteristics that set Nobu – the global institution – apart from any other food business.
Matsuhisa: Quality ingredients, exceptional service, inspired cuisine, unforgettable memories, and family.
QH: Nobu Doha has acquired a niche amongst foodaholics - what are the targets for the next 3 years?
Matsuhisa: It’s an exciting time for Nobu Hospitality, with new restaurants, hotels and residences opening across the next few years including Del Coronado, Maui, Cairo, Rome and Danang. I look forward to introducing the Nobu brand to new markets.
QH: If you were to re-do anything about Nobu - the global institution - what would it be? And why?
Matsuhisa: I don’t think I would change anything. I am very grateful and proud of my team and all that we’ve achieved.
SHORT SHOTS:
Best advice received: Always do your best. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and remember to learn from them. Think from your guests’ point of view and never lose passion for what you do.
Best travel destination: Wherever the next Nobu hotel or restaurant opens.
Best go-to book: I don’t have a go-to book!
Best method of unwinding after a tiring day: I like to take a hot bath at the end of the day to relax.
Hero/heroes that you look up to: My mom and my grandmother who raised me.

A first-of-its-kind collaboration between Vilebrequin, the iconic luxury swimwear brand from Saint-Tropez, and St. Regis Hotels and Resorts, this concept redefines beachside luxury with a seamless blend of fine dining, bespoke retail, and world-class hospitality.
The redesigned pool area, adorned with custom Vilebrequin furnishings, creates a chic yet playful atmosphere that captures the vibrant essence of Côte d’Azur. with its cocktail of playful elegance, exceptional quality, and irresistible Frenchness. The St. Regis Doha offers us a unique platform to express our heritage and know-how. Working together to craft an unforgettable guest experience is truly inspiring!"

QH: Can you share the story of Vilebrequin's evolution from a renowned swimwear brand to entering the hospitality sector?
Herlory: Vilebrequin’s roots are deeply tied to Saint-Tropez, embodying the carefree elegance of the French Riviera. Transitioning from crafting iconic beachwear to creating holistic beach experiences felt like a natural progression. With over 50 years of expertise, we sought to extend our heritage into immersive hospitality ventures that align with our commitment to quality and style.
QH: What motivated Vilebrequin to venture into creating lifestyle destinations like La Plage?
Herlory: We wanted to offer our customers a 360-degree experience that goes beyond apparel. By bringing our playful elegance into physical spaces, we create a new way to connect with the brand, offering unique experiential elements that elevate our presence in the luxury lifestyle domain.
QH: What did the journey look like when conceptualising and executing this hospitality project? What was the vision for Vilebrequin La Plage?
Herlory: The process involved translating Vilebrequin’s essence into a tangible experience. Collaborating with The St. Regis ensured we maintained brand integrity while achieving an immersive, luxurious, and consistently high-quality offering for guests.

Herlory: La Plage combines fashion, fine dining, and leisure into one cohesive destination. We aim to set new standards for integrated luxury, offering curated experiences that transcend traditional hospitality and create a unique lifestyle proposition.
QH: Why did Vilebrequin choose The St. Regis Doha as the location for La Plage?
Herlory: The St. Regis Doha’s commitment to luxury and exceptional service perfectly aligns with our brand values. Its iconic outdoor pool provides an ideal canvas to bring the French Riviera lifestyle to Doha’s vibrant market.
QH: What significance does this collaboration with St. Regis hold for Vilebrequin?
Herlory: This is our most comprehensive beach experience to date. It marks a milestone in expanding our brand into hospitality and showcases the potential of cross-industry collaborations in redefining luxury.
QH: How do Vilebrequin and St. Regis’s values align to create this unique offering?
Herlory: Both brands prioritise bespoke service, elegance, and creating unforgettable moments. This shared vision enabled a seamless blend of fashion and hospitality, culminating in an exceptional guest experience.
QH: What experiences do you hope guests will have at Vilebrequin La Plage?
Herlory: We aim to immerse guests in the ambience of the French Riviera while offering curated dining, exclusive retail options, and joyful memories in a luxurious setting that feels both playful and elegant.
QH: Do you anticipate future collaborations between Vilebrequin and other hospitality brands?
Herlory: We are open to exploring opportunities with brands that align with our vision. Expanding La Plage to other destinations could further strengthen our commitment to exclusivity and authenticity.
QH: How does Vilebrequin La Plage capture the essence of the French Riviera while catering to Doha’s unique culture?
Herlory: We infused Saint-Tropez-inspired elements like Starfish & Stripe daybeds with touches that respect Doha’s cultural context. The menu also blends Provençal flavours with local influences, ensuring the experience feels authentic to both identities.
QH: How does the dining concept at La Plage enhance the overall guest experience?
Herlory: Our menu, curated by Studionomie, celebrates the flavours of Provence with a Doha twist, suitable for all ages and occasions. Special activities like Saint-Tropez barbecues and themed sharing menus enrich the culinary journey.
QH: What exclusive offerings can guests expect at Vilebrequin La Plage?
Herlory: Guests can explore a limited-edition Qatar capsule collection, a curated selection of swimwear and accessories, and a oneof-a-kind retail space inspired by our Haute Swimming Store in Paris.

A Mediterranean transformation: Exploring the all-new Elements at Four Seasons Doha
Azqa Haroon visited the newly revamped Elements at Four Seasons Doha and was blown away by the transformation. Here’s a glimpse into her unforgettable Mediterranean dining experience.
Enchanting ambience
Known for its reputation as a beloved dining destination, Elements has embraced a Mediterranean twist, elevating its offerings and ambience to unmatched heights. The restaurant’s transformation is evident in every detail, from its cosy yet sophisticated indoor seating to the stunning outdoor terrace that offers a view of lush gardens. It’s the perfect spot to bask in Doha’s pleasant weather while indulging in a culinary adventure that takes you across the Mediterranean.
Delightful starters
My journey began with a thoughtful touch—a complimentary basket of fresh bread accompanied by a vibrant green butter. This simple yet delightful offering hinted at the culinary brilliance that awaited. Among the starters, the berry muhammara stole the show. Featuring a blend of aubergine, capsicum, cherry syrup, and macadamia, it was a flavourpacked dish that felt both comforting and adventurous. The sweetness of the berries juxtaposed with the savoury elements created a dish that was truly memorable.
The Arancini, filled with spicy beef chorizo, manchego cheese, and saffron aioli, was another standout starter. Each bite delivered a satisfying crunch followed by a burst of rich, smoky flavours. The Lubina carpaccio, with
its delicate peach dressing, basil oil, and passion fruit accents, offered a refreshing yet complex dish that was light and satisfying. The tangy beetroot salad added a pop of colour and flavour with golden and candy beets paired with Greek yogurt and aged balsamic, creating a dish as visually appealing as it was delicious.
Chef’s signature mains
Chef de Cuisine Claudio Leanza, the mastermind behind the menu, brings an unparalleled level of creativity and passion to every dish. His ability to balance bold flavours with delicate textures was evident in every bite. The lamb shank was a triumph, with tender saffron-braised lamb paired with a hearty bean cassoulet, onion relish, and a hint of mint that tied the dish together beautifully.
The lobster linguine was another highlight—perfectly cooked Canadian lobster tossed with bisque, confit tomatoes, and lemon breadcrumbs that added a zesty crunch. The mykonos
carrot, a dish of harissa-spiced carrots with Greek yogurt and chickpea pops, showcased how even humble ingredients can be transformed into culinary art. For seafood lovers, the Omani prawns were a dream, with their chargrilled sweetness enhanced by a tangy sweet chili glaze and lemon zest.
Sweet tooth
No meal is complete without dessert, and Chef Saul, Elements’ pastry chef, ensured it ended on a high note. The Greek yogurt semifreddo was a revelation–light,
creamy, and irresistibly refreshing. Initially, I thought I’d just have a taste, but it was so mouthwatering that I couldn’t resist finishing every spoonful. The phyllo mille-feuille, with its delicate, crunchy layers and perfectly paired vanilla ice cream, was another standout, offering a symphony of textures and flavours that lingered long after the last bite.
Final thoughts
From start to finish, my dining experience at Elements was nothing short of spectacular. The impeccable dishes, warm ambience, and breathtaking views create a setting that feels both luxurious and inviting. If you’re searching for a Mediterranean-inspired escape in Doha, Elements at the Four Seasons Doha is a destination that promises not only incredible food but also unforgettable memories. Chef Claudio’s culinary genius and the entire team’s dedication make this a place I can’t wait to return to.

Racing towards a healthier & stronger Qatar
Azqa Haroon from Qatar Happening chats with three founders of No Limits Qatar, Mohammed Al-Ahbabi, Tamim Al Kuwari , and Ahmad Al Naemi, to discuss their passion for promoting active lifestyles, building strong foundations for youth, and creating unique racing experiences.
QH: Why are races for children and teens important?
Mohamed: Building a foundation for sports at a young age is important. Starting early – around ages 5 to 10 – ensures that children develop skills, discipline, and a sports-focused mindset. These early experiences help them grow stronger with time and prepare them for future opportunities. Our broader goal is to foster a healthy, active community, irrespective of age. Everyone – kids, teens, and the elderly – can benefit from participating in sports. It aligns with Qatar's Vision 2030, which includes nurturing young talent to represent the nation on global stages like the Olympics.
QH: How do World Cup stadiums add value to these events?
Mohamed: The World Cup stadiums are an incredible asset. They were designed for world-class sports events, and we aim to make the most of them. By organising races such as the "Walk of Champions," which take participants through these iconic venues, we offer a unique way to relive World Cup memories and appreciate the effort Qatar invested in creating these landmarks.
Tamim: Performing inside these stadiums is a one-of-a-kind experience.
Ahmed: It’s not just about sports but about connecting with the community and bringing fresh, innovative ideas to Qatar.
QH: Are there exciting plans for future events?
Tamim: Our primary focus is delivering unique and memorable experiences.
Mohamed: Coming up, we have an event at Al Bayt Stadium on December 20, with distances ranging from 5K to 800 meters for kids. We can’t wait to see everyone there!
QH: How do you see locals and expats embracing fitness?
Tamim: The growth of fitness culture in Qatar is remarkable.
Ahmed: Five or six years ago, running casually in Doha was unusual, but now both locals and expats are embracing it. It’s inspiring to see the community come together to participate and adopt an active lifestyle.
QH: What more can be done to encourage community involvement in health and fitness?
Tamim: We believe the key is normalising participation. A weekend run doesn’t require months of preparation. It should be seen as a fun, social activity that anyone can join. These events are not just about fitness – they're about stress relief, social connections, and building a healthy routine.
Ahmed: Our advice? Start small, keep it casual, and let fitness become a natural part of life. It’s never too late to begin!

Family fun continues with a Gingerbread Workshop on December 20. For New Year’s Eve, options range from a buffet dinner at The Kitchen to lively celebrations at The Shelby and Mulberry Tavern with bottomless beverages. These events ensure memorable experiences for both families and individuals.
