THE NOTE
Fun holiday pie stylings from our shoot at Copain Gatherings with The Plaid Penguin
No. 54 It feels like summer just ended, but here we are finalizing another holiday issue and honestly, I couldn’t be more excited about it. This issue, since our humble beginnings in 2011, has always been about the season of giving and this issue is no different: we continue the annual tradition by sharing a giant list of some of our city’s most amazing philanthropies. You'll also be able to read about some of our favorite holiday sides from some of the best Charlotte restaurants and sample unbelievably delicious holiday desserts from the brand-new Copain Gatherings. Their pies, we guarantee, will get you in the spirit. To round out this issue’s features, some of the most talented photographers in the city share their favorite wintry Queen City images so you'll be ready for the season. Along with our Exclusives readers can also peek into La Belle Helene, Charlotte's new French brasserie, meet Beth Barden of designPOST interiors, go on a weekender to The Inn on Biltmore, see Bonnie + Bud's gift baskets, view the work of Kathleen Murphy, and so much more. Lastly, for those recently engaged and planning an upcoming wedding, our winter Bridal Guide recommends some wonderful purveyors that can help you with your special day. We hope you enjoy, and wish you a very happy holiday season. See you in 2019! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor Brett Barter, Publisher

A Creative Spirit How Kathleen Murphy creates pieces that complement spaces as well as people. words SAM BRAMLET T photos JAMEY PRICE

The Culture // Musings
K
Kathleen Murphy is drawn to beauty. Between making her own jewelry and now her fine art line, the creative spirit within her is nothing short of infectious. Kathleen says her first motivation to make her own jewelry as a child came when she couldn’t find what she wanted anywhere else. Fine art came later, as the same type of hands-on solution to an inability to find exactly that which she was seeking. Today, Kathleen is the winner of Belk’s Southern Designer Showcase, and she continues to break the mold, drawing attention from interior designers like Beth Keim of Lucy and Company in the process. When it comes to understanding her style, the first thing you should know is that Kathleen loves balance, from outfits to room design. Art is meant to make a statement, and Kathleen’s ability to emphasize the features of a room by carefully organizing the color of pieces explicitly created for that room expresses her diligence as well as her personality. Rare materials and delicate, light features make her work fine and airy—capable of being an augmentation or the focal point.

The Culture // Musings
What inspired you to start your own business? In high school I wanted to find large statement earrings that were simple and light, but I could not find anything like what I was looking for‌ so, I decided to try and make some myself. Later, I wanted a large, abstract painting for my living room, and, again, I could not find one with the right color scheme and the right size, so I painted what I wanted. My father was in the U.S. Navy, and we moved every two or three years. When we lived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, I hunted for conch shells on the beach to do shell art. When we lived in Washington State, I began trying to paint abstract landscapes of the beautiful mountains and Puget Sound. By the time I was in high school, I was selling the things I created. What materials do you use to make your jewelry? I like hunting for what is unique. Often, I want to find different trims and fringes from fabric stores and then add brass and gold components. Just last week, I went to a high-end upholsterer in Hickory and found unused leather pieces. I get excited when I find recycled glass, carved bone, or exotic woods that I haven’t used before.
The Culture // Musings
How did you get involved with the design community here in Charlotte, and in particular Beth Keim? Lucy and Co. designed a house for a good friend. My friend mentioned to them that they should look at my Instagram page @kathleenmurphyjewelry because my pieces can be tailored to fit in many designs. I have worked with many interior decorators and clients to create the perfect custom abstract painting for their walls. What’s your process when someone commissions an art piece? I imagine where the paintings will hang and what the surroundings will be. I follow certain interior designers and then try to create art that they would want for their own home. If I have a commission, I interview my client, get pictures of their room, fabrics, and accessories, and then color-match my painting so that it will work uniquely in their space. Any upcoming plans or anything we should know about? I decided to build a studio space after I stopped my two-year-old from sticking a bead up her nose and my four-year-old from trying to paint her sister. Babies, beads, and blank canvases don’t always mix... Once the construction is finished, I hope to have many new designs.

Art by Locals, from Locals Sybil Godwin curates the Charlotte art scene words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE portrait courtesy SHAIN GALLERY
Sybil Godwin has been working in the art world for over fourteen years, but, really, she’s been living it for her entire life. The newest owner of Shain Gallery in Myers Park, Godwin is also the mother of two young girls, a one and four-year-old. Originally from the Charlotte area, and fully embedded in the local art scene, Godwin attended North Carolina State University and moved to Atlanta after

her graduation. She returned to Charlotte in 2013 with her husband, Bill. Godwin has now taken over the reigns and she hopes to continue to run Shain Gallery for years and years. “I want to be in my eighties and still selling art. As the city evolves and grows, we will too. There will be lots of exciting things to come,” Godwin promises.

"I always tell people that I work hard at the gallery, but then I go home and work even harder. Being a mom is the hardest, but most rewarding, job." Tell us more about your work and this gallery. What initiated your passion for art? Did you always know that you wanted to be a curator? My aunt is an artist, and her colorful paintings filled my house growing up. My mom and dad were also very supportive of my love of art; I can't remember there being a time when there wasn't a white coloring pad and crayons nearby. Describe the art community in Charlotte. How is the art scene in this area unique, and what has it been like working with local artists? The art scene here in Charlotte is growing just as quickly as the city itself is. I think that as time goes on, we’ll start to see more and more galleries popping up. We love the local artists we represent, including people like Andy Braitman, Curt Butler, and Laura and Trip Park. You’re a mom of two young children; how do you balance being both a mom and the gallery owner? I always tell people that I work hard at the gallery, but then I go home and work even harder. Being a mom is the hardest, but most rewarding, job.

You say some of your goals are to collect pieces from up-and-coming artists and to encourage younger collectors to purchase art. What importance does art play in the home? I get so tickled when young collectors come in the gallery, because I know what's about to happen; they’re going to buy their first piece and get hooked just like I did when I was twenty-two and fresh out of college. Once they get that first piece in their homes, they begin to realize how original art makes such a difference. One of my old bosses in Atlanta used to always say that "art is a mood changer." It can completely uplift you, the same way a favorite song can. What advice would you give to people who want to introduce more art into their homes but don’t know where to start? Start visiting galleries and discover what you like; you don't have to know anything about art to love it. And then, if you find something, take it home on approval. Our policy is to let all of our clients try the paintings before they buy them, so they can really see how it looks and feels in their home. info shaingallery.com @shaingallery

Follow Clara in a coming-of-age fairy tale adventure as she traverses the Land of Sweets, dances beneath magical snowfall, and encounters battles between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Complete with costumes and sets designed by the best in the industry, a stirring score by the Charlotte Symphony, and spectacularly reinterpreted choreography entitled to none other than Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, the Charlotte Ballet honors a treasured holiday tradition with this must-see performance. A generous grant from Hugh McColl allowed for Bonnefoux to reimagine this iconic ballet back in 2016; partnering with the industry’s premier designers and allowing himself an imaginative extension of creative liberty, Bonnefoux remastered a sensational production with a sense of both taste and tradition. Elegant and inventive, magical and mesmerizing, contemporary yet reminiscent, The Nutcracker captures the minds of patrons across generations. The ballet will be performed at Belk Theater, December 7 - 23 with both matinee and evening performances. info charlotteballet.org @cltballet

Husband and wife duo Joel and Kerri Mills discuss the drive behind their American leather brand, Choice Cuts Industries, and the vision behind their commitment to quality.
52 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • HOLIDAY 2018
J
Joel and Kerri Mills, founders of Choice Cut Industries, used a mutual passion for creativity and ingenuity to establish their family-owned leather brand. The couple each has a B.F.A. in graphic design from Winthrop University, alongside over a decade of experience with marketing, packaging design, and photography. Fueled by Joel’s desire for a well-made watch band, the couple initially began with an Etsy shop for products they screen printed in their garage. “We weren’t trying to start a company, just a hobby that paid for itself. But we stumbled upon a business!” Joel says. Each product from Choice Cut Industries is hand-stitched and sourced from renowned tanneries within the United States. The couple uses Horween Leather Co., in addition to Wickett & Craig and Hermann Oak Leather, brands that the couple describe as “legendary.” Joel and Kerri married in 2010 after meeting at college. Both attribute a great deal of the motivation behind their brand to childhoods spent in the rural Carolinas and to what the couple call an “innate creativity and curiosity that drove us to spend our childhoods tinkering and making things.” It is this sense of tradition, authenticity, and hard work that infiltrates every part of the company.

“Charlotte has an incredible, positive energy. There’s such a ‘can-do’ attitude.”
Why did you start the business and how has it evolved since opening? When we first started, it was just a hobby. But we realized quickly that we either needed to quit or take it to the next level. Delivering Southern Hospitality Whitney Holofchak of Bonnie + Bud curates customizable gift boxes to share her favorite gifts of the South: love, generosity and gratitude.

words MARY ELIZABETH MYRICK photos JAMEY PRICE
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Whitney Holofchak migrated to Charlotte, North Carolina in search of adventure. She earned a Bachelor’s in business administration from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, unaware that Charlotte would quickly become her permanent home. In December of 2014, with a one and two-year-old at home, Holofchak was disheartened by her lack of “time or resources to create thoughtful gifts for loved ones for the holiday.” The name was given to her in a dream, a reference to her grandmother and uncle, Bonnie + Bud was created to fill this need in Holofchak’s own life— a desire to provide thoughtful, southern-made gifts for the people she cared about most.

“Every day is so different with a small business. No day, project, or box is ever the same.”
Inspired by her childhood habit of handwriting notes, she explains, “My favorite gifts are the most simple ones. I am especially appreciative when it’s clear that the giver knows me so well and has put thought into the gift.” Holofchak was raised in a big family and taught to “value connection with others, to show gratitude, and that the smallest gestures of kindness can mean a lot.” With boxes for a variety of occasions, such as “Welcome Little One,” “For the Foodie” and “Gentlemen’s Boxes,” Bonnie + Bud provides numerous selections to choose from, in addition to custom boxes for both weddings and corporate events. You can even provide Bonnie + Bud with a list of your own personal preferences, likes and dislikes, and what you hope for the box to encapsulate. Each Bonnie + Bud box arrives alongside fresh flowers, succulents, or air plants, and with a handwritten note from the gift-giver, as yet another element of connection for the recipient. “Each gift is very personal, and we take a lot of care and detail in creating each one,” she says. “We hand-select every item included in the gift boxes that we send out. Our goal is to take on the role as the giver and take the pressure off of our client to find the perfect gift.” For Holofchak, a typical morning starts with a cup of coffee and spending time with her two children before they head to school. Often, her time is divided between curating boxes, meeting with artists and craftsmen, tending to emails, and creating corporate proposals. “Every day is so different with a small business. No day, project, or box is ever the same,” Holofchak explains.

"My favorite gifts are the most simple ones." Bonnie + Bud is as grassroots as they come, a business started in Holofchak's own home with her dearest friends and family in mind. That thread remains, as Holofchak emphasizes working with local small businesses and partners. “It's fun to be able to work with friends and support each other,” she says simply. Currently, Bonnie + Bud has been partnering with local businesses like Nectar Flowers, Cloister Honey, Meadowbrook Soap, Pour Olive, Living Kitchen, and Twine & Twig, amongst other brands. Holofchak credits much of her inspiration to meanderings around farmer’s markets, antique stores and craft fairs, filled with these types of local artisans. In the future, Holofchak hopes for Bonnie + Bud to continue to work with local collaborators and to continue to provide a variety of new products and selections. All the while, Holofchak strives to maintain a sense of family legacy and classic southern traditions, while extending the careful curation of Bonnie + Bud to clients both old and new. info bonnieandbud.com / @bonnieandbud

Fashion's Innovator Mignonne Gavigan on how her Southern roots helped weave the path to becoming a business owner, celebrity-beloved jeweler, and a style boundary-pusher.
M words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
Mignonne Gavigan herself is as radiant and exuberant as you’d expect from the owner of the self-named business that specializes in the bright, bejeweled, and statement-making. Her style is a little southern and a lot progressive, so it’s no wonder she was noticed quickly by fashion-forward celebrities like Jessica Biel, Selma Blair, Sofia Vergara, Kate Mara, and Katy Perry. Her signature beaded scarf necklaces, the piece that started it all for Mignonne, can be seen on the streets from L.A to NYC, and her line is carried at stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus.

an idea of composition and there was a piece on the floor that I picked up, tied around my neck, and fastened with a safety pin. I walked home through Soho in New York and literally was stopped three times to be asked where I had gotten my “necklace”. From that day, the MG scarf necklace was born. For years, I made the necklaces for friends and family, and then formally launched my brand in 2014. I found my business partner, Layne, who is also from North Carolina, coincidentally. She had years of finance and business experience, so we balance each other out perfectly. As an artist, how do you keep yourself inspired? I’m constantly inspired by everything around me; the pattern a crack in the sidewalk makes, the color story in the sky a setting sun makes, or even a detail found in traditional materials from a new place I’ve traveled. I’m very visual, so I’m always looking at details, colors, and textures.
“Living in New York, where life is fast and people are busy, you realize how refreshing it is to be surrounded by Southerners who take the time to say hello or even just flash a simple smile.” Mignonne is a warm, friendly personality, dressed in an effortlessly stylish getup that reminds me right away of where she’s made her new home (New York City). But when we meet to discuss Mignonne Gavigan, both the woman herself and the business, it’s on her hometown turf here in Charlotte on a mild, early summer day. It’s a fitting place to see what the brand creator and artistic visionary has built over the past years; in a relatively small window of time, Mignonne has carved a major niche for herself in the fashion industry and joined rank in the industry’s fast-paced hub, but her roots are here. In an old friend’s home, she pours over pieces she’s brought along with her and talks to us about her journey from start to present day. How has your upbringing in Charlotte inspired your work? Through my use of color and texture. Charlotteans have a colorful style that is whimsical and fun, yet still sophisticated. I’ve never been shy about bold colors, which is something I attribute to growing up in Charlotte, too. Plus, I make jewelry for people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Inclusivity is one of the cornerstones of my brand. How did Mignonne Gavigan go from an idea to a business? In 2007, I ripped up a vintage gown to use the beadwork for inspiration. I was placing parts of the dress on a mannequin to get
64 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • HOLIDAY 2018
When did you become interested in jewelry? Growing up, I was always making things. I have three brothers, and if I wasn’t asked to round out a wiffle ball or football team, I was in the basement creating things. It was usually drawing, or painting, or building anything out of paper. I wasn’t always a jewelry person, but when I draped the first scarf necklace, I couldn’t go back. Now that you’ve had the brand for a few years, how do you begin the design process for each season? I start designing a season one year in advance. A color story comes together as I research trends, but mostly I act on a feeling. I collect items from my travels, and each collection is usually inspired by a place that I have visited. I focus on specific techniques and the collection’s color story as a way to bring this place to life and translate the beauty in color, details, and textures into the Mignonne Gavigan pieces. I translate prints and textiles into modern day jewelry that is still reminiscent of the past, and then master artisans create each piece by hand in India. How would you describe your own style? Fun, elevated, colorful, comfortable, and easy! I love color and textures and love t-shirts or a good button up. I like to play with volume. I’m obsessed with jeans… designer or cheap kinds. I’m really into sneakers and flat boots. Rarely will you find me wearing high heels to work. What are some of your favorite things about returning home to North Carolina? The people! Living in New York, where life is fast and people are busy, you realize how refreshing it is to be surrounded by Southerners who take the time to say hello or even just flash a simple smile when you cross paths. I love (and miss!) the incredible weather, the access to good food, rich culture, the ocean, and the mountains.

Do you have any basic style tips for adding jewelry to an outfit? For me, more is more! I love mixing and matching colors and textures. Uptown Charlotte is filled with a variety of different cuisines, and recently, it’s added La Belle Helene to its ranks—a French-style dinner, lunch, and brunch spot, frequently referred to as LBH. Inspired by the concept of the traditional French brasserie, it’s a casual eatery serving a little something for everyone. Regardless of the occasion, it’s a setting that’s simultaneously dazzling and laid-back, full of casual ambiance with beautiful detailing. The menu is an array of quintessential French dishes, such as Poulet Roti, French Onion Gratinee, Grilled Chicken Paillard, and Strawberry Charlotte. For lunch, there’s a selection of additional salads and sandwiches. Their weekend brunch offerings, similarly, are a collection of both sweet and savory, like their Free-Range Eggs Benedict, Avocado Toast, Croque-Monsieur, and Brioche French Toast. For drinks, LBH is serving up a blend of both French-inspired beverages and innovative, new specialties. Their French American Parade, for an example, is an impressive combination of Maker’s Mark Straight Bourbon, St. Germain, lemon grass, lemon, soda water, and

pepper and Genmaicha Syrup. Alongside their cocktails, there is also an extensive selection of beers and fine wines. Chef Michael Rouleau of LBH has been passionate about the culinary arts and French cuisine from a young age. Influenced by what he described to be the great, but modest, cooking of his parents, it was when Rouleau was fifteen that he began to try his hand at cooking. He turned it into his professional career at seventeen. “I was blessed with this French last name, my father’s French-Canadian, and I fell in love with French cooking. Really, it all went from there,” Rouleau explained. He attended culinary school, then worked at several renowned restaurants in Connecticut. For a short time, he lived and worked in Maui, eventually migrating to Philadelphia before his move to Charlotte. As he began

Simon Powles, the Founder and CEO of Starr Catering Group, and his team manage and oversee the restaurant and culinary operations for LBH alongside Rouleau’s culinary creations. The ambiance, in every detail, is authentically French, designed by renowned Parisian architect and designer Richard LaFond. From the black and white tiles to the unique murals, soft lighting, and classic bronze elements, these touches are nods to the countless eateries tucked within the streets of the infamous City of Lights. The hand-poured pewter bar, handcrafted millwork, and leather banquettes work alongside the stunning chandeliers to create an ambiance that is, if anything, transportative. Whether you’re in search of a new spot to frequent during your lunch break, to cozy up at for weekend brunch, or to have an intimate, memorable dinner, La Belle Helene is ideal for it all. It’s a step into the slower-pace of European life, sitting down to enjoy not only food, but—as they would emphasize at La Belle Helene—life as a whole. info labellehelenerestaurant.com @labellehelenenc

Jaymin McAffrey and Tanner Fink bring their culinary talent to small-batch sourdough. words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
Verdant Bread started as a seed of an idea between two friends—if bread had been used to gather people together for centuries, Tanner Fink and Jaymin McAffrey reasoned, what could locally-crafted, handmade bread do for Charlotte today? Tanner, a transplant from Montana, and Jaymin, here from Texas, already loved tinkering around in their respective kitchens and both had connections working with some of the most well-respected eateries in the area—The Pickled Peach, Kindred, Hex Coffee. So when the duo realized they shared a fascination for fermentation… well, Verdant Bread was born. “We cook, bake, eat, and creatively push each other forward,” Tanner says.

“I love how committed you have to be to good bread."
Their bread is undeniably beautiful to look at, made carefully from a homemade sourdough starter, but it’s also complexly flavorful and perfectly textured. Part of this comes from the management of the living culture necessary for sourdough. It’s a fine science that results in a richer tasting bread that’s also (cheers, health nuts) easier to digest. The kitchen—often Hex in Camp North End—has become Tanner and Jaymin’s lab: “I love how committed you have to be to good bread,” Jaymin explains. “Each batch of dough is a learning experience. My favorite tactic has been: Do it, learn from it, talk about it, learn from others, apply what you've learned." Today, Verdant is popping up all over the city, with menus that change each time. The sandwich choices are curated by Tanner and executed by him, Jaymin, and their newest member, Ryan Faircloth. They plate up the artisanal loaves with choices like a smoked pork with smoked leek, fennel and smoked apple soubise sammie, or turn the bread into savory bread pudding and sweet toasts. The vegetables are dictated by whatever produce is in season, and Tanner tries to source the meat and cheese as locally as possible, too. info verdantbread.co @verdant_bread

Since then, I’ve taught myself how to make them through trial and error, and it just happened to be something I fell in love with. How do you balance a cake's taste and aestehtic? I see baking as a form of science and cake decorating as a form of art. All of my recipes go through a great deal of research and development. Cinnamon Rolls words SUNNY HUBLER photo JAMEY PRICE
Haberdish has been stealing our hearts with their fried chicken, savory sides, and crafty cocktails for the past few years since the eatery opened up shop in NoDa. All of our standard favorites aside, it’s this most recent menu addition that won’t leave our heads. The cinnamon roll gracing the Sunday brunch line up, is—first and foremost—made with biscuit dough. Stop the presses there: It’s resultantly denser, flakier, and chewier, making it darn near perfect and a fitting adjunct to the food lineup for what’s become a standout Southern kitchen. The final step to this morning indulgence was adding a warm, housemade caramel sauce on the side. It serves as a surprising complement to the light dusting of powdered sugar that sits atop the fluffy pastry. Our best recommendation is to order this as an appetizer of sorts for sharing, before digging in to the rest of the stellar brunch offerings. — info — haberdish.com @haberdish

The Stanley’s cocktail program, has so far done an admirable job of keeping pace with Chef Paul Verica’s farm-driven menu—no small feat, since Paul literally tweaks his food menu almost daily. This vibrant, buttered beet drink, the College at Kingston, isn’t currently on the menu, but we’re hoping it comes around again, now that colder weather is rolling in. It’s exemplary of the funky things this restaurant does with rote ingredients: dry sherry and angostura bitters meld with a buttered beet syrup, of all things made (obviously) from local beets. These flavors all rest atop the semisweet bite of Queen Charlotte rum, made right here in the QC. This cocktail knows its roots. info thestanleyclt.com @_thestanley_

Cooling Effect words COREY MILLER photo JAMEY PRICE
Bardo is the Tibetan Buddhist term for that liminal stage between death and rebirth, and mixologist Amanda Britton’s Cooling Effect toes the line between spice and refreshment to the point that it becomes difficult to tell which is which. The base is Lunazul Reposado tequila, with a fruity aroma and a creamy, smoky finish, is perfect for pairing with bitters and spice. That’s precisely
Bardo’s line of thought, because the Cooling Effect uses the natural bitterness of aloe as well as the complex spice notes of both guajillo and arbol peppers. A dash of lime tempers the Latin-inspired heat, and the all-natural, Spanish-style ingredients add smoke, spice, and character. Downing a drink like this produces sensations of connection with the world and those around you.

Born in South Carolina, Beth grew up in both Florida and California—a true beach girl at heart, she says. But, it’s the Charlotte area that gave her the courage to take a leap into a new business across the span of her twenty-nine years thus far. “I have roots here; that familiarity has given me the confidence to step out as a designer, but I am also constantly inspired and motivated by the growth and changes happening in our city,” she described.

“I live for HomeGoods accessories; you can find one-of-a-kind looking pieces that will bring so much personality but won’t break your heart if they get knocked over by a Nerf bullet!” In her own words, Beth’s style and designs are cozy, layered, and traditional. Often, she works with neutral tones, incorporating clean lines with touches that add elements of casual comfort. It’s the combination of her laid-back West Coast roots and years of Southern tradition that inspires her to create spaces that evoke a little bit of both. On her blog and Instagram, she often shares sneak peeks of before-and-afters of her projects, alongside styling tips, mood boards, and round-ups of some of her favorite products. “I try to break down the design process to make it achievable and affordable for even the most ‘design-challenged’ people,” she explains. As a mom, Beth realizes that for other people with families, it’s important to design spaces that are as functional as they are aesthetically pleasing. She recommends investing primarily in quality pieces, such as your couches and chairs, always with stain-resistant fabric. When it comes to lighting fixtures and rugs, she hunts for more affordable options. “I live for HomeGoods accessories; you can find one-of-a-kind looking pieces that will bring so much personality but won’t break your heart if they get knocked over by a Nerf bullet!,” she laughs.

“I try to truly be present with my husband and kids; I clean up my desk, stop checking emails, and unplug so I’m not distracted.”
When it comes to balancing her life as a mom and designer, Beth admits that it isn’t always easy. But, creating lists and even setting timers has helped her separate “work time” from “family time.” “I try to truly be present with my husband and kids; I clean up my desk, stop checking emails and unplug so I’m not distracted,” she explained. It’s this overarching concept of balance in her own life that Beth encourages homeowners to incorporate into their home’s design; sometimes it isn’t about a full-room renovation, but rather, swapping out old pillows and accessories, reorganizing a boring bookshelf, adding a bold paint job or creating a simple gallery wall. Whether working on a complete transformation or doing minimal styling, it’s all about the endless possibilities of a space for Beth. As she would explain, “It’s the thrill of turning something ‘blah’ into something pretty.” info designpostinteriors.com @bethbarden

Art of the Chisel The work of Jacob Wolfe inspires us to realize a higher pursuit. words SAM BRAMLET T portraits and studio photos JAMEY PRICE project photos courtesy ARS/COELI
Jacob Benjamin Wolfe began as a violinist. That’s right: he first studied music, not woodworking. The intricate detail etched into the timber he molds and shapes betrays the kind of education that the masters who inspired him received. The more-beautiful-than-life representations of the human form and biblical scenes from masters like Bernini and Michelangelo were the result of a lifetime of study and work, but in just seven years, Wolfe has made strides, leaps, and bounds, in pursuit of that same passion.

Wolfe does his work in a factory space in North Davidson, right down the street from NoDa Brewery and next door to Amelie’s business office. Upon entering his shop, one is met by large pallets of wood ready to be cut and nine-foot-tall statues of figures like John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Standing in front of the barn door he made, you can see a gorgeously colorful mural (three stories tall and the length of a city block) in the distance.

Most of Wolfe’s work is done for the church. The first woodworking job he ever undertook was to renovate St. John the Baptist Church, transforming what was a drab, white-walled room into the exquisitely carved sanctuary it is today. That was eight years ago. Looking back on it, he sees that first project as an essential stepping stone. He’s currently working on St. Thomas Aquinas’ church, asked to do so by the same priest who originally requested his help at John the Baptist. In a way, he’s come full circle.

“The purpose of church art and architecture,” says Wolfe, “other than its functionality, is to draw the viewer up toward heaven, and to try our best to represent the beauty of heaven so the viewer can be inspired to live a life that leads there.” The yearning for a closer relationship with God has driven Wolfe to where he is. It seems poetic in a way, like a veritable Joseph the Carpenter, blessed with the knowledge of styles that defined the rebirth of art. Wolfe is self-taught, but he’s had the good fortune to be mentored by world-class artists, who still come by to give him advice every now and then. To attain the skill of the masters of old seems like a lofty goal for anyone, but Wolfe is well on his way. info arscoeli.com @wolfework

A Living Room With Seasonality words SUNNY HUBLER photo JOE PURVIS
This living room, part of a custom build by Charlottebased Knight Residential Group, is a stylish twist on traditional modern design. Knight Residential, founded by Vernon Knight III, builds exclusively in Charlotte and Kiawah Island. They’re a full-service residential construction company, and while they specialize in high-end custom construction that runs the gamut in terms of aesthetic, the projects are all characterized by the team’s signature attention to detail, quality, and standard.
This Charlotte home was completed by Knight Residential in June of 2017. To achieve the lived-in, inviting look, Stefanie Johnson’s Space Lift company led the interior styling. The living room was finished off with a Precast Surround System, a beautiful, highly-detailed ceiling, and signature steel interior french doors. Part of the reason for the accessibility built into the design was due to the fact that the interior living room leads into an outdoor seating area, creating a Charlotte-friendly “four-season” space.

A Casual, Transitional Kitchen words MARY ELIZABETH MYRICK photo DUSTIN PECK
This Lake Norman home in the Peninsula Club is a transitional space, filled with a mixture of classic and contemporary influences. For the kitchen, homeowners David and Patricia Maruna asked designer Karen Kettler to create a re-enlivened space around their Dale Chihuly painting, “Basket Drawing.” Particularly, Karen considered the vivid colors of the work, adding touches of the verdant greens and reds with details such as a kettle and hardware, simple plant life, and fresh fruit. The chandelier from Slate interiors
complements the circular shapes of the art, creating a sense of movement and contrast amidst the more structured elements of the space. Onyx cabinets craft a primarily neutral color palette for the space, allowing the art to take centerstage. Additionally, antique mirror beveled tile contributes another layer of texture to the room, while also supplying a sense of opulence. The overall result is a kitchen that is both clean and fresh, while simultaneously functional and ready to be enjoyed.

Tiny Little Thing Charlotte designer Ashley Jimenez and the talented folks at Corban Homes masterfully execute this stunning Huntersville farmhouse. words DENISE LORRAINE DAVIS photos METROPOLIS ICONIC SHOTS
“A tiny little thing.” That is how the homeowner describes his newly constructed farmhouse residence, tucked away deep in the woods and flanked by cow pasture land in Huntersville, NC. Southern Living Magazine served as the inspiration for this beauty: Husband and wife Matt and Jacey had been living in a grand chalet-style home in Black Mountain before Matt moved to Charlotte for work. By day, Matt is a Fortune 500 IT Executive and by weekend/night, he is a skilled creative craftsman and doting father to their daughter Mirabelle. When he decided to build a custom home, he needed to make a decision between building what he calls a palace (think Buckingham) or a tiny little thing.

The Folio // Blueprint
“At the end of the day, we decided that—despite the trends—we’re done with luxury living or living large. We are a lot more down-to-earth; and decided to go in a direction that is truthful and honest,” Matt recalls. Matt started driving around searching for land to build on. Deep into a country backroad, he discovered a sign that stopped him: Twelve acres for $300K. “How is that price even possible?" he thought. He would then learn that the parcel was actually part of a large land conservancy with strict easements. The building site would have to be limited to three acres, and the surrounding land required to remain completely untouched and natural. Seeking an authentic, laid-back lifestyle, these restrictions were not only workable—but ideal for what they wanted to achieve. Being so creative and hands-on, Matt inserted himself into the design/build process probably more deeply than most homeowners. He felt that the collaboration with designer Ashley Jimenez, of Charlotte’s Ashley J Design, could not have been a better fit. “Ashley gives you an ‘out’ early in the process,” he explains. “She creates loose preliminary sketches that are hand-drawn and look like artwork. I seriously fell in love with her drawings and it allowed us to remain fluid in our thought process without feeling like we were being pushed into a design.”
118 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • HOLIDAY 2018
As a result, his original idea influenced by the home in Brad Pitt’s “Legend of the Fall” was scraped. It was one-story, too huge, and wrong for the site. Ashley was particularly adept in managing Matt’s impulses. “Instead of saying no, she would just gently say: ‘Hey, let’s talk about this,’” he laughs. Ashley puts it this way: “It’s my job to climb into my clients’ heads and hearts to find out what about their home and living environment puts a smile on their face. It sounds cheesy, but my ultimate goal in being a home designer is to put smiles on faces and create environments for peaceful living.” The final result is an understated, barn and 4,425 square foot farmhouse perched at the end of a winding road atop a knoll in the clearing. They cut their usual square footage footprint in half and were still able to provide a living space for Jacey’s dad above the garage. The design criteria was to avoid having any unused or rarelyused living spaces. The design is purposely rural, simple, and very casual. It has a traditional cross gable roof line to give the main body of the house the classic appeal of farmhouse massing. The details are decidedly minimal in decoration, like the plainness of the redesigned gable end brackets and omission of any front porch railing, which eliminates visual barriers to the calming view of their barn in the distance.
The Folio // Blueprint
The house blends into its rural setting so well in fact, that it almost appears as if it has been there all along. With hobbies such as carpentry, sculpture, and woodturning, Matt contributed plenty of his own touches throughout the home too. The lower level powder room is a head-turner. No drywall. An antique 1840’s horse collar converted to a mirror with feathers from his father-in-law’s pheasant farm in Wisconsin. The floor is a clear epoxy resin covered in shiny copper pennies that he collected and laid himself. Each penny is secured with a dot of glue. He collected 5,995 pennies of his and Jacey's birth year (1977) and hid five birth year pennies for each of their parents and daughter to find. Due to WWII, his father’s birth year (1943) penny was made out of steel and had to be painted copper to match the rest. A lot of cleared wood and natural materials were used in the construction of the Scottish-inspired garden house, water well, farmhouse dinner bell stand, planks, beams, and framing. Anything larger than 6 feet were milled down by a mobile saw mill on the property. A fallen cedar tree even prompted Matt to design and build the unique tree swing that welcomes you at the bottom of the driveway entrance by the barn. Another slab of wood became the top of an eye-catching picnic bench under a pergola. Tim Furr, of Corban Homes, explained what made this project stand out for him: “Some properties and their owners just bring out your best as a builder. Instead of taking the path of least resistance, we were open to do so much more and focus on what they truly wanted. We all had great synergy on the vision, which made the process between us highly creative and fun.
120 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • HOLIDAY 2018
The Folio // Blueprint
It was a special treat to work alongside such a talented and warm person like Ashley in making their wishes come true.” Living on twelve acres has allowed Matt and Jacey to live a farm lifestyle and teach Mirabelle about the wildlife native or invited to their land. Any form of life that lives on the land with them becomes a part of their farm family, like Murray the black snake. He tries every few days to sneak into the chicken coop to steal an egg or two from their heirloom hens. Jacey has named the girls as well: Hawkeye, Stormy, Pumpkin, and Cali. Around behind the garden house, a new beehive is getting establish and thriving. “I’ll let them have all the honey the first year,” cracks Jacey. Meanwhile, the cats are hunting in the woods and the dogs are running around without a boundary in sight. It is hard to believe that this off-the-grid lifestyle at the end of the last gravel road in Mecklenburg County (deeded historic) is so close to everything a major Southern city can offer. Standing there, all you can hear is the wind rustling leaves and birds chirping. After dinner, the family strolls with their pets through the woods on a private half mile trail that Matt created around their home. For sure, they have smiles on their faces. info DESIGNER: ashleyjdesign.com / @ashleyjdesign BUILDER: corbanhomesnc.com / @corban.homes

Franklin The town of Franklin is a gem burrowed within the mountains of Western North Carolina. words MARY ELIZABETH MYRICK photo JAMEY PRICE
I
Initially called “Nikwasi” in Cherokee, the Carolina town of Franklin continues to be precisely what its original Cherokee name describes: a center of activity. Incorporated in Macon County in 1855, Franklin is surrounded by popular cities like Asheville, Atlanta, Knoxville, and Greenville. Home to a much smaller population of approximately 3,940, Franklin offers a refreshing, leisurely change of pace. With various festivals and celebrations of the town’s Cherokee and Scottish roots, Franklin embraces the history of its creation. Franklin boasts three museums, each focused on the intricate past of the region. One highlights the surrounding Macon County, another exhibits Scottish Tartans, and the third displays gems and minerals, primarily since Franklin is known as the “Gem Capital of the World.” During the spring to fall seasons, many visitors stop by the gem mines to collect their own gems. With various mines to choose from, be prepared to get your hands dirty in search of “Color, Clarity, and Crystals.” Throughout the year, Franklin also hosts their “All-American Fourth of July” and the “Annual Pumpkinfest” in October. A nod to their Appalachian influence, the “Airing of the Quilts” is their annual summer quilt show, alongside their other summertime celebration of “The Taste of Scotland Festival,” focused on the town’s Scottish with ample food, clothing, music, Highland Games, and elements of Cherokee culture and tradition. Home to the largest antique mall in North Carolina, Franklin offers hours of digging for old treasures, ensuring you’ll head home with something special. For more shopping

With rotating musical acts of bluegrass, oldies, country, Motown, reggae and more, “Pickin’ on the Square” brings together locals and visitors alike for all-around good music. To experience the great outdoors, Franklin conveniently rests within the Nantahala National Forest. Spanning over 500,000 acres, it is the biggest National Forest in the state, providing access to countless trails and opportunities for sporting such as mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, zip-lining, backpacking, and camping. Where The Horses Roam Seclusion and charm in the Outer Banks words SAM BRAMLET T photos JP GRICE
About an hour north of Kitty Hawk in the Outer Banks of North Carolina lies the beachside town of Corolla (pronounced by locals as kuh-RAW-luh). A visit here means digging your feet into silky, white sand and absorbing the sun (make sure to bring sunscreen). The historic area provides a plethora of things to do, from touring the wildlife refuge and visiting the Currituck Beach lighthouse, to watching the wild horses run or learning to surf. Corolla is one of the most secluded points in the Outer Banks, but it draws a crowd every year for its herd of 119 feral horses. In the sunny beauty of the beach, they run free in a 12,000-acre animal sanctuary funded and maintained by The Corolla Wild Horse Fund. To access, you can drive the 4x4 beaches yourself or hop onto one of the tour buses. A quick drive up to the Currituck National Wildlife Reserve bears the possibility of catching a glimpse of the elusive King Rail. It’s difficult to spot as it keeps to specific areas in the wetlands, but the reserve is also home to a wide variety of colorful raptors. The coastal landscape provides a staggering amount of biodiversity and wildlife, but Corolla offers entertaining activities of all kinds. It’s a prime spot for on-shore and deep sea fishing, there’s a surf school, and, for thrill seekers, you can even feel the air beneath your feet as you parasail above the sparkling sea.
132 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • HOLIDAY 2018
It’s ideal to stay in one of the many seaside homes that are available for rent. In typical Carolina fashion, the cabins come with names that evoke days in the sun and laid-back evenings. The smell of salt in the air complements these homes more than anything else could. In the evenings, as you lay back with your family after a home-cooked meal, you’ll be treated to a rosy-pink sunset reflecting across the water and the silhouettes of the dunes. The fare on Corolla is varied, casual, and funky. Corolla is more of a proper small town than some of its southern counterparts (Avon, Salvo), and it offers cute coffee shops, bars, and eateries aplenty. All of the establishments have that beachtown feel, with lots of fresh-caught seafood. The Sanderling’s Lifesaving Station has delicious dinner offerings as does North Banks Restaurant and Raw Bar, and First House is a staple breakfast spot. Corolla is a diamond in the rough—it’s small and out of the way, with only 500-ish full-time residents. But it’s a beach trip unlike any other: No noisy tourists, no zany attractions, just the purity of nature and the relaxing fun of sand between your toes. The unbeatable sunsets, small town vibe, and the calming tones of the ocean in the distance will leave a smile on your face year after year. It’s well worth the drive every time.

Rooster's Carolina Gold Rice
There’s something about side dishes that help a meal feel a little extra festive this time of year. Sure, the turkey or ham stand out, but what helps make our plates (and hearts) feel really full are the accompaniments. The South has long known for its hosting and dinner parties after all, and sides are, by nature, shareable and easily giveable. They are a way to contribute to a meal with your personal favorite flavors and beloved family recipes, and whether you craft one with care in your own kitchen, or grab a side from a local store in a rush on your way to a work party, you know the offering will be well-received. Here are a few of our personal favorite side dishes from local culinarians, from King's Kitchens Hoppin’ John to Reid’s glazed carrots and Crepe Cellar’s sardines, there’s a little something for everyone’s holiday table. Rooster's Carolina Gold Rice The Carolina Gold Rice at Rooster's is about as simple a dish as it gets, yet I'd wager it's one of the most delicious cast iron servings you'll ever have. This dish relies heavily on the quality of the heirloom ingredient, adds a nice helping of butter, and a generous pinch (or three) of salt to deliver a near-perfect complement to your main course. Reid’s Honey Garlic Glazed Carrots Pop by Reid’s after five for their tender, flavorful, freshly harvested tricolor carrots. Drizzled with a sweet honey garlic glaze, these vibrant, locally-grown carrots can be ordered in individual or shared sizes. Depending on how much you like your dinner party, you may elect to redirect your company toward Reid’s superior meats, and save the carrots for yourself. By using local farmer's market vegetables, fried garlic and a rich Caesar dip, Nuvolé even makes a simple veggie plate feel new and enticing. Order the Caesar Crudité alongside a sweet cocktail to enjoy a refreshing flavor combination. Crepe Cellar Sardines on Toast Take a tour of European cuisine without leaving Charlotte by visiting the Crepe Cellar. Begin your journey in the Mediterranean with the Portuguese brand Jose Gourmet, whose salty and savory sardines accompany a to-
die-for charcuterie plate. Nested in a tin brimming with an array of spices and flavors, these flavorful fish are served and pair perfectly with the toasted crunch of warm baguette slices. Flour Shop Foccacia An open kitchen is obviously a cool way to experience Charlotte’s evolving culinary culture… but for the ravenously hungry, it can nonetheless be a kind of torture for the senses. The sights and smells of hot Italian, prepared fresh with fresh ingredients, make Flour Shop both a magical and, well, difficult experience. And that’s never more true than when Chef Trey Wilson has some of his focaccia in the oven. Luckily, that’s the stuff that makes its way to your table first. This bread is the perfect intro to Park Road’s new mainstay: A crusty, golden exterior gives way to soft-and-chewy goodness on the inside, reminding you precisely why we keep olive oil around.

Little Spoon Deviled Eggs
Haberdish Charred Okra Haberdish’s whole menu is comfort food heaven, but it’s all rounded out by their list of homey sides. We certainly can’t choose a favorite, but the milltown eatery’s okra, which has been a staple on the menu since day one, is certainly a standout. Fresh okra, charred in cast-iron pans, is topped with house-made bacon jam, and—like all the popular side dishes here—is served in two sizes. (You want the large.)
maestro Tsuyoshi Ono’s daily raw menu is obviously the thing that keeps us coming back on the reg, but don’t overlook our go-to Izakaya-style plate on the menu: those fried Brussels sprouts. Sesame, sea salt, sweet soy, and the airiest of flaky bonito round out the one Buta plate that—please don’t riot in the streets—rivals those infamous rice crispy squares.
Little Spoon's Deviled Eggs Deviled eggs: how every southern celebration should really start. And the ones served over on Selwyn Avenue at a favorite of ours, LittleSpoon, come in a pretty classic presentation but with a little added flavor— delicious bacon, pickled vegetables, and cilantro.
King's Kitchen's Hoppin' John You can't start a year off in the South without a bowl of tradition: delicious Hoppin' John. The Uptown eatery, King's Kitchen, has it's own unique take on the classic adding corn, tomatoes, and parsley to the rice and black eyed peas. This additional flavor, as rumor has it, adds even more good luck to your new year.
Futo Buta's Fried Brussel Sprouts The ramen bowls are filling—I get it. But if you think Chef Michael Shortino’s massive, violently flavorful bowls of made-in-house noodles are the only thing worth your time at his light rail spot, you’ve really got to rethink your Futo Buta strategy. Resident sushi
Fahrenheit's Charred Broccolini Holiday sides abound here at Uptown's famous rooftop restaurant and for good reason: they do them well. All the small plates, salads, and sides are phenomenal. We've had their mac and cheese (one of, if not the best in the city), crispy fried brussel sprouts, and acorn

squash to mention a few and all would fit right in on the most delicious of holiday spreads. But, our recent infatuation is with their charred broccolini. After three separate orders on a recent visit, we can confirm that this simple, flavorful side truly complements just about any dish. Midwood Smokehouse Cast Iron Cornbread Midwood Smokehouse has several delicious sides to choose from, but we feel as though cornbread might be one of the most underrated, yet delicious, of them all. The cast iron skillet cornbread from Midwood Smokehouse is an all-hands-in shareable side. Made better only by a healthy slather of butter, this housemade classic is the perfect starter dish. Yafo’s Greek Yogurt Mac n’ Cheese One of our favorite takes on a traditional dish, Yafo's Greek yogurt mac n’ cheese is a fresh twist on comfort food's favorite side. Creamy and rich, the plate gets a little bite of tartness from the Greek yogurt; it’s a memorable addition to any spread.

“Life’s greatest moments happen when we take a break from the routine to make time to be together.” Copain is inspired by Chef Noble's humble start in the kitchen; since the beginning at Noble's in High Point, NC, he's had a passion for serving really good bread. In fact, one of his first culinary triumphs was trying to figure out how to bake, and then finally executing, the perfect classic baguette. Now, with Copain Gatherings, the renowned chef has a dedicated kitchen, superior equipment, and an accomplished team poised to break bread like very few can: baking world-class naturally leavened bread and other mouth-watering loaves. The inimitable chef and restaurateur created Copain Gatherings as a new collective committed to making getting together easy: Prepared foods and chef-driven provisions are Copain’s bread and butter, but the full
scope of the concept is a little more ambitious. For now, Copain exists as Charlotte’s most thoughtful catering option, a company dedicated to entertaining. But, in the near future a brick-and-mortar location—in the form of a European-style bakery and grocery—is sure to be the next part of their evolution. “At Copain we carry those beliefs into everything we prepare,” he explains. “In our kitchen, we prefer food that makes you feel good with a style that is understated yet refined.” The team is well aware that some of the best gatherings happen spontaneously, so the European-style cafe and bakery will offer a wide assortment of freshly prepared foods, baked goods, and chef-curated provisions.

Copain's culinary dream team also includes the seasoned Zack Renner as Culinary Director and Executive Chef and talented Sarah Wrenn as Catering, Sales, and Artistic Director. There’s a special breed of excitement that descends over Charlotte when it snows—a southern point in a southern state, snow storms aren’t unheard of here but they sure ain’t a dime a dozen, either. Each year that we do get a coating, it’s an opportunity for the best type of winter activity — grocery stores go quiet (after the rush for bread and milk has ended), schools close, sleds are dragged out of storage, and fireplaces beg to be lit. Of course, these scenes of white are fleeting, here one day and gone the next, which is why we’re thankful these talented Charlotte-based photographers took to the streets to capture our city adorned with wintry wonder. These photos each present a slightly different view of what snow looks like in the South, from a skyline speckled with flakes to wildlife waiting out the weather, but all together, they make for a beautiful depiction of Charlotte’s shortest season.

A guide to Charlotte’s charitable organizations and local philanthropists.
T
The holidays are a season when it’s easy to assume everyone is having the same experience we are—celebrating the same ways, sharing in the same traditions and rituals, gathering with the same type of folk. In the years we’ve been making this magazine, we’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of parts of this city that we wouldn’t have otherwise, and in that pursuit, we’ve been reminded time and again that not everyone lives the way we do. It’s a moving reminder, and one that’s made us rethink the holiday season: We now know this is a time in which we have an opportunity to contribute to the fabric of the city we live in, and not just to the inner-workings of our own families. As many people as there are in need this season, there are also many, many charitable organizations and local philanthropists, all dedicated to the causes closest to their hearts. Knowing that we are, as a community, stronger than we can ever be as individuals, we hope that this list will encourage you, too, to make the lives of those in need a bit brighter this December, and through the new year. Here are 21 charitable organizations and local leaders, and the various ways that you can do your part to help build a stronger community and make Charlotte even better.

The organization brings sports dreams to life for qualified children by creating personal experiences with their favorite athletes, sporting event, or sports team. In their mission to unite communities and promote children's dreams, they partner with treating physicians and social workers to help identify candidates for a Dream Experience.
