020! Can you believe it? It seems like yesterday I was watching television as the ball dropped over Time Square to welcome in a new millenium. What a fast twenty years, but time flies when you're having a good time, and for us at QC Exclusive we've been enjoying a fun ride watching and documenting our vibrant city as it continues to blossom. To start this year off on the right foot, we decided to put together a beautiful wellness issue. After all, new decade, new you! So, in the following pages you'll find twenty unique fitness destinations to jumpstart your yearly health goals, twenty New Year's resolutions — playful to profound — from notable Charlotteans, and twenty activities sure to help you recover and improve physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally in the new year. On top of that, we talk to Marsha Barnes about financial wellness and share ten of our favorite classes that can help you add a much needed skill to your repertoire. Our Exclusives end with our cover story about the 25 year anniversary of the Queen's Cup Steeplechase, an event dedicated to raising money for the Alzheimer's Association. In that story, we also share a list of other sporting events throughout the city dedicated to raising money and awareness for important causes. The wellness theme continues in this issue with stories on South End's new Flower Child, skincare line Pure Stella, kombucha cocktails, Geoflora's natural wearable art, ROOTS Catering, and so much more. We hope you enjoy and cheers to 2020! You made it this far and it's only going to get better! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor | Brett Barter, Publisher

Elisa Sanchez is rapidly making a name for herself as one of Charlotte’s most talented and versatile artists. This homegrown virtuoso (Sanchez has lived in and around Charlotte since age four) can be found more often than not haunting the halls of Goodyear Arts, but paused long enough to answer a few of our questions about her process and passions.
“If I’m having trouble finding joy in creating something, my alternative is to experience the joy someone else had in making something.”
When did your interest in art begin? I first began to take a serious interest in art when I was 12 or 13. I learned a lot from books and online art communities but no formal training until the two years I spent getting my art degree at UNCC. I have not always been an “artist,” but my family is very creative, and I’m grateful to have grown up in a supportive environment. Both sides of my family are immigrants so I learned to embrace making your own life for yourself with whatever career path you choose.
Where do you find inspiration for new pieces? Where do you turn to get inspired in general? One of the reasons so much of my work centers around nature is because of the seemingly infinite variations of color and form that you can find there. I’m always trying to capture the balance of color and composition that the earth creates so effortlessly. I also find a lot of inspiration in the work and process of others. If I’m having trouble finding joy in creating something, my alternative is to experience the joy someone else had in making something.
How would you describe your artwork? I hope to convey a sense of storybook mystery: very charming and aesthetic at first glance, but a darker twist for folks who look closer.
About how long does it take you to create one of your pieces? I’m a very fast worker when it comes to execution. The longer part of the process is conceptualizing the piece. Once I have a clear image in my head, it’s go time and often doesn’t take

I also have a short attention span, which is why I prefer fast drying, permanent drawing methods—less opportunity to second guess yourself! What is your aspiration as an artist? I’d like to get to the point where I feel like I can adequately convey the work that lives in my head. When doing a commission, how do you develop a sense of what your client wants? I’ve been very lucky in that most of my clients find me because they have seen my work in person or online and are looking to commission work along the same lines. However, I really enjoy being pushed to explore new techniques. Working with musicians to conceptualize and create album covers and gig

posters have been some of my favorite projects. The client generally has an idea of what they want. My job is to explore tangential concepts and imagery and compose those together into a piece that won’t just get buried in the visual snowstorm of the internet. How do you hope to develop your craft in the future? I’m very excited for the next several years as I begin my apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist. It’s a technical medium with a lot of room for expression and collaboration, and I’m very interested to see how it will influence my work and vice-versa. info elissandra.com / @elissandraa

Copland did not have a title for his work when he finished it, and it wasn’t until Martha Graham’s suggestion that the title actually became Appalachian Spring. Identical twins Margaret and Ellen Hinrichs are the dynamic duo behind Geoflora Jewelry. The sisters combine their talents and training in metalwork and jewelry making to create statement adornments inspired by nature. In addition to their jewelry business, both sisters hold down full-time jobs, yet still found a spare moment to talk to us about Geoflora.
“The biggest reward is a tie between the relationships we have with our customers and the moment we see our collections come to life.”
54 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JAN/FEB 2020
How did each of you individually become interested in crafting jewelry? We both have an arts background cultivated by our mom from a young age. We grew up doing art classes all throughout school, as well as attending art camps. When we went off to college, we each fell in love with jewelry making. How did each of you end up in Charlotte? We’re natives! We moved back after graduating from ECU and have made it our home.
The Culture // Style
How would you describe Geoflora’s aesthetic? We make bold, unique, statement jewelry. Our designs are wearable art at an accessible price. How did your company begin and what made you want to start a business? We started our business in college as an exercise in making our designs on a smaller scale. We loved selling on campus and decided to open our online shop after we had a couple pop ups under our belts. How have the jewelry designs at Geoflora changed from when the company first opened?
56 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JAN/FEB 2020
We used to make enormous, sometimes not wearable statement pieces. Reminder: we were art school weirdos! We used lots of mixed media such as resin, cement, wood, and powdercoat in our initial designs. Now we use more conventional materials such as brass, sterling silver, and gemstone. Our current designs are still statement pieces but all wearable. What is your day-to-day work like? Every day is different for us. We both still work full time but make our business a priority. We do anything from making the jewelry, designing new collections, coordinating photo shoots, pop ups and markets, teaching through Skillpop, to answering emails.
The Culture // Style Where do you source inspiration? Our current collection is a return to our roots and heavily inspired by nature’s forms. What are some of your personal favorite types of jewelry and accessories? We both heavily gravitate towards earrings and they are always the starting points of our collections. Ellen loves to wear large hoop style earrings while Margaret prefers anything large and flashy. What is the biggest reward in having your own business? Biggest challenge? The biggest reward is a tie between the relationships we have with our customers and the moment we see our collections come to life. Our biggest challenge is definitely a good worklife balance. How do you make the pieces? We hand-make every aspect of our jewelry, cutting shapes from sheet metal, forming the metal, soldering, polishing, and setting stones. It’s a very loud and messy process but so much fun! info geoflorajewelry.com / @geoflorajewelry

PU R E STEL L A The all-natural plant-based skin care sweeps across the Queen City. words ELEANOR MERRELL photos JAMEY PRICE or courtesy PURE STELLA
Often, the best inventions are born of necessity. Such is the case for Pure Stella, a Charlotte-based skin care company that emerged when founder Stacey Rex discovered a dearth of adequate, all-natural products to treat her daughter’s eczema. Rex researched botanical solutions and began to create her own concoctions, eventually discovering the power and efficacy of plant-based ingredients. She began with small batches for herself and her family, until the public demand for her products reached a fever pitch and thus began Pure Stella. You didn’t intend to create a small business when you developed a solution for your daughter’s eczema. What other surprises have come from this journey?
60 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JAN/FEB 2020
Coming from the corporate world, I was pleasantly surprised to find how supportive and collaborative local makers and artisans can be. How did you create your lotion sticks? I was able to create the recipe for our lotion sticks through a lot of research into the individual ingredients and then a lot of trial and error. I learned that beeswax acts as a natural version of petroleum jelly. It retains moisture and protects the skin, all while allowing it to breathe. It also has antiitching properties, which were great for soothing eczema and was the main reason it became the leading ingredient in our lotion sticks.
The Culture // Beauty
What are some basic, at-home skin care tips and tricks we can all employ? The first thing I share with people is that skin care problems are symptoms of underlying issues. We can use topical skin care to help treat the symptoms but we also need to look deeper. At home, you can try to drink lots of water, get more sleep, and eat a diet full of fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. to help nourish the skin from the inside out. Also, don’t be afraid to look in your fridge or pantry for a quick spa treatment. Mixing honey and yogurt with either turmeric or clay mask makes a great moisturizing treatment for your skin. Mixing sugar or coffee with coconut or oil is a great scrub to help with dry hands.

Do you sell your products in retail stores in Charlotte or just online? Several local stores stock my products, including CLT Find, H2Blow, Moxie Mercantile, and Unwind Tea & Coffee. I also get to connect with new customers at pop-up events like Front Porch Sunday. Which is the most versatile of your butters and oils? Lavender essential oil is probably an ingredient that you would find in many of my products. It has so many beneficial properties including calming and soothing the mind, balancing the skin's moisture barrier, and helping inflammation.

In the summer and spring, our natural mosquito repellent, Bug Off Lotion Sticks, are our biggest seller. They include a blend of ten essential oils able to mask the scents we produce that attract pests. It is a solid lotion stick that you only need to apply behind your knees, in the bends of your elbows, and around your ankles to stay protected. Applying Bug Off to your temples will also help keep gnats out of your eyes. Our Coffee Infused Eye Serum has a cult following year-round, too. I use locally roasted Enderly Coffee, then infuse that into Sweet Almond Oil before blending it with other lightweight but intensely nourishing oils. The result is a great moisturizer in an easy to use roller ball tube that not only has the added antioxidants from coffee, but also has caffeine to help promote circulation while decreasing puffiness and dark circles. What do you hope to see for the future of skin care, the industry, and Pure Stella? I certainly hope to see a continued shift towards safer ingredients but more importantly, I hope for more positive advertising and messaging. It is so disheartening to see companies, through their advertising, implying that women aren’t good enough the way they are. info purestellaskincare.com / @purestellaskincare

With locations in California, Maryland, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, DC, Georgia, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Virginia, it was only a matter of time before Flower Child skipped over to North Carolina. “We have been eyeing Charlotte for some time, waiting for the right location,” says Jessica Mulroy, Regional Manager for Restaurant Operations. “When this particular space came open, we fell in love with the vibrancy of the area and the future vision of the South End neighborhood.” Phat Burrito was the former tenant of the building Flower Child now occupies. Like its predecessor, Flower Child welcomes quirkiness, though more so of diet variety than of graffiti art and grunge. Designed to accommodate every eater and delight the health-oriented, Flower Child’s menu is made from scratch and made to order. Most dishes originate as vegan or vegetarian with the option to add ingredients and flavors for a flexitarian experience. “A meat and potatoes guy can enjoy dinner with a vegan and with their kids who love mac and cheese,” explains Mulroy. Start with one of Flower Child’s tantalizing appetizers, like crushed avocado toast (with soft egg, black sesame, and white cheddar) or the soup of the day.

Craig Barbour spent weekends cooking with his dad. Yet, his path from those youthful culinary weekends to becoming the founder of the South Endbased ROOTS Catering and Café was far from direct. As a young man, Barbour studied mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland, determined to pursue a career where he could work with his hands. Soon, though, Barbour came to fear that his

mechanical engineering degree would lead to days spent crunching numbers behind a desk. Barbour backtracked and reset his sights. “I chose a profession in which I would not be able to avoid creating and making,” Barbour explains. He honed the baseline culinary skills he’d developed with his father at Charlotte’s Johnson & Wales before training with Chef Bruce Moffet at Carmel Country Club.

“I chose a profession in which I would not be able to avoid creating and making.” Although his stint at Carmel was formative, it was destined to be short-lived. “My grandfather had his own business, my father now owns that business, and I knew that I wouldn’t be happy until I was my own boss,” concedes Barbour. So, in 2011, Barbour debuted the ROOTS food truck at the now defunct Charlotte Clean and Green festival. At first, the truck was a solo enterprise but the operation quickly grew, and so Barbour added two more trucks and staff. Four years later, Barbour and his crew realized they were primarily using the trucks to fulfill catering orders, rather than using it as a proper food truck. So they sold the trucks and transitioned to catering, thus beginning the modern iteration of ROOTS.

The catering branch of ROOTS facilitates weddings, social gatherings, and corporate events. Barbour’s team helps clients through every stage of the process, from design to implementation. In addition to creating and executing mouthwatering menus, ROOTS coordinates rentals and linens, recommends venues and vendors, and offers bar and beverage services. The catering service prides itself on customization, and Barbour boasts that “no two events are ever the same.” Just two years after officially launching his catering business, Barbour was taking his dog to South End Veterinary Clinic when he spotted an “Available” sign in the window of the building that now houses the ROOTS Café. “The café does a

In classic café fashion, customers place their order at the counter, choosing from a selection of salads, bowls, and handhelds on the lunch menu or all-day breakfast items and pastries. The menu changes frequently as seasons shift and staff members flex the creative freedom that Barbour readily offers. “Our recipes come from a combination of what is popular, what is in season, what the newest trends in food are, and honestly some things we just throw out there to see if they stick,” says Barbour. Crowd favorites include the savory BLT with an egg, breakfast burritos, and grit bowls. Barbour has new projects on the horizon, including a second facility that ROOTS will dedicate to fulfilling catering orders and offering cooking demonstrations, as well as a venue management company called beau monde. Barbour’s parents gave him a bumper sticker that he affixed to the original ROOTS food truck. It read: “Love people, cook them tasty food.” As Barbour looks to the future, he plans to follow that mantra closely: “If we stick to those two principles, we can’t fail.” info rootscafesouthend.com / roots-catering.com @rootscafecharlotte / @roots_catering

In 1992, Sharon Garfield opened Traditions Interiors and Accessories, a 7,700 square foot space offering furniture and accessories arranged in vignettes. Traditions now employs nine staff members, including four designers ready at any moment to help customers perfect their interiors. Here, Sharon reflects on more than 25 years of prosperous business operations. How have you ensured success since you opened in 1992? We transitioned with the times. During slow periods, we brought in items that we didn’t normally carry. We also made it a priority to stay up to date with the changing tides of design in the industry. Why did you pick Park Road as a location? Park Road Shopping Center has always had some of my favorite places and I wanted to join the group. It’s bustling

even during slower seasons, which made it a great place for us to get started. Plus, it’s a one-stop shopping center with a nice blend of merchants. What is the significance of the name: Traditions Interiors, Classic Interiors Redefined? We added the second line to our name because as society redefines itself, we've had to redefine what "traditional design" means. Through it all, we've maintained our workmanship, craftsmanship, and quality of products. How has your business evolved since opening? We’ve added more lines, including a jewelry department and some clothing pieces. Simultaneously, we have introduced ourselves as one of the top furniture store destinations in Charlotte on social media. In fact, our social media presence brings customers in daily and is one of the main drivers of walk-in sales.
The Folio // Profile
“As society redefines itself, we've had to redefine what ‘traditional design’ means.” Who are your typical clients? We see a variety of age groups, but our typical client is between the ages of 35 and 45 years old. We are starting to see a lot of empty nesters, as well as couples moving into retirement centers. What does your business offer that gives it an edge over its competitors? Our customer service and design knowledge go a long way in bringing in clients and maintaining our relationships with them. We also accommodate both walk-in customers and oneon-one design customers. Do you have a hand in picking the pieces that are displayed in your store or do you leave it to the designers? We all have our hands in it: the designers know what we can sell, and I know what we can afford. It makes for a lovely marriage. Do interior designers use the store? Yes, they walk their clients through the store to see items in person, feel fabrics, sit in sofas, and truly know what they are purchasing for their home.
90 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JAN/FEB 2020
What would you recommend to customers visiting your store for the first time? I would recommend that customers ask questions and always approach us for help. We also suggest being open with us about your budget, because we can work with all budgets while still ensuring the quality of pieces. In 2019, why is it still important to have access to brick and mortar stores? It would be foolish to say that we aren’t facing competition from online shopping. That being said, it is very important to be able to see, sit, touch, talk to someone knowledgeable, and know exactly what you’re purchasing. I would never buy an upholstery piece without sitting in it. To me, it is worth the little bit of extra money you might have to pay to shop in-store.

After receiving her Bachelors and Masters degree in Business, along with taking Interior Design courses, Monika moved to Charlotte and quickly fell in love with the city. She decided this was where she wanted to create her own business, helping Charlotteans create beautiful spaces and shaping how the area will look in the future. After being given a chance at a designer show house in 2009, Monika decided to take the plunge and Designbar, her interior design firm, was born. us, and we get to know them. We talk about their vision for the space, brand requirements, budget, and anything else to get a better understanding of the project. From there we start with design concepts and, after client approval, we move into design development where we actually design the space and select all the finishes, materials, lighting, and furniture. This phase concludes with a design presentation to the client, and then there’s construction, installation, and styling. The project concludes with a final walk through and us handing over a project binder to the client. Does Designbar use local vendors for its projects? We love working with local vendors. When it comes to custom furniture, we love working with Kauffman & Co or Josh Utsey. For anything bath-related, we love working with the ladies at Majestic Bath or with Ferguson. As for countertops, we are a big fan of Cambria. Their showroom is absolutely stunning and the countertops are to die for. For accessories and styling, we love to venture out to Interior Design classes. Local gems like Magnolia Emporium or Sleepy Poet Mall also offer opportunities for one-of-a-kind finds.

Can you describe a few of your favorite projects? It’s really hard to name a favorite because every past project has aspects about them that I absolutely loved. However, if you have to nail me down, here are a few that will always be dear to my heart: I loved working with Continental Tire, Eight Sushi and Asian Kitchen, Cantina 1511, Nokian Tyres and Crave Dessert Bar. We are currently in the process of finishing a few projects that are absolutely to die for, but I cannot share details until they’re completed. What continues to inspire your love for interior design? Inspiration comes from everywhere. Traveling is a huge inspiration because it’s amazing to see how other cultures execute and interpret design. Things we deem necessary in the US are barely noticed, while other countries focus on other things. The way patterns are mixed, the way flooring is installed, even the way a bed is made in other countries can be a source of inspiration. The key is to stay observant and just watch and listen. The smallest things can define the idea for your next design. info designbaronline.com / @designbar

Kendra Tardif White, of Charlotte’s Pheasant Hill Designs, uses the principles of good design to capture the essence of her clients, and with that in mind, is able to adapt to any design genre based on the needs of each client. Here, Kendra was tasked with achieving a kitchen atmosphere that could be relaxed and inviting, yet still functional with lots of countertop and cooking accessibility for a client who wanted to bake and cook every single day. Kendra re-worked the kitchen layout and incorporated the
base cabinet directly in the middle of the island, which houses a Kitchen Aid mixer on a hydraulic lift so the client never has to do any heavy lifting. The overall guiding design principle was clean lines and balance, which resulted in a fresh new look for the space and made the kitchen more proportional to the overall size of the home. Today, with Pheasant Hill’s touch, the kitchen is soft and open, a place where the home chef can get to work and the entire family can gather.

Jaclyn Ehrlich, of Jaclyn Ehrlich Interiors, created her design firm with the goal of bringing beauty into her clients’ everyday lives. This lakefront home in the Sanctuary on Lake Wylie does just that: This was a project for a client who loved dramatic design details. Jaclyn combined dramatic flair alongside neutral elements with a built-in soaking tub, double shower fixtures, and heated flooring.
Jaclyn’s client loved the crushed diamond look of Sonoma Tilemakers Tantrum series tile so that was the design team’s starting inspiration point which led to the lighting selections, too. Jaclyn added reclaimed architectural beams to the high ceilings to warm it up so all the choices combine for a balance of dramatic and grounded elements. The result is a bathroom that makes for the perfect at-home place of peace and luxury.

M A D FOR MOD A glimpse into a hidden Miami Modernist lakefront getaway built by Augusta Homes. words DENISE LORRAINE DAVIS photos METROPOLIS ICONIC SHOTS

When a move removes you from the residential aesthetic you relish, you might just do everything you can to recreate it where you’ve resettled. That is essentially what happened inside a modest lakefront townhouse over the past year. It was stripped naked to its outer shell to make way for an HGTV-worthy extreme interior makeover show. From the traditional exterior, one would never guess that this soothing elegance of modernity is hiding inside the community themed covered front entry. An audible gasp is all that can be expressed upon entering. An impressive 8 ft-wide floor to ceiling monolithic fireplace — appearing to soar beyond the dropped floating ceiling — is the central focal point. The surface is rubbed oak and metal with a thick cantilevered grey marble stone slab. The floors are 7.5” wide engineered natural oak flooring to ensure stability for humidity when windows and doors are left open for long periods of time. A stunning staircase greets you with a 99% glass vanishing handrail with hidden metal shoes inside the stairs and stairwell, the precision of which is “insane” according to the designer. The stairwell wall is covered with thin porcelain-lux cement anthracite sheet tile — clad with a concealed door to an interior powder room — that butts up to the staircase with mathematical exactness. the waterfall quartz kitchen island at the bottom. The perfection of design, flow and execution is for all to see and marvel at all at once. It is well known that most people in Europe prefer contemporary or modern styling in their interior design. Neutral tonality with a minimalist appearance is a lifestyle passion for many in North America, too. To be faithful to their well-established taste for modern living, the homeowner brought their Miami-based dream team, Thomas Diverio and Charlotte Dunagan of Dunagan Diverio Design Group and locally-sourced luxury home renovator and builder, Augusta Homes, together to completely redefine how their new weekend-getaway would welcome them and accommodate their needs. This was an A-Team assembled because of their combined passionate experience in catering to a way of living with a noholds-barred approach. They knew the challenges of this massive renovation and were well-prepared from the start. “Here we are removing everything down to the studs, all while respecting this small, tightly-spaced lakefront enclave of homeowners and working within their HOA restrictions,” says Augusta Project Manager, Mic Easton, “Working on this fantastic reno alongside a world-class design firm fits our ideal large-scale, ultra-luxury construction project, where we are driven to aim for perfection with each and every detail.”

In fact, to ensure perfection, Mic flew to Miami to talk shop about the construction techniques required to execute some of the meticulous design details featured in Dunagan Diverio’s luxury portfolio, including the homeowner’s former award-winning residence. “The simpler the design, the less room there is for mistakes. The more abstract and clean the lines, the less opportunity to hide imperfections. The lack of crown molding and base boards means construction standards have to be essentially perfect. No place to hide. Absolutely zero room for error,” asserts Tom. The business trip to share best practices turned out to be quite beneficial. Mic proudly points out the perpetuating flush trim details that exist throughout from floor to ceiling, room by room — no matter what the materials are, including solid wall surfaces of suede and stone. “You’re not going to find this degree of perfection in a design/build execution anywhere around the lake,” he beams. There were countless FaceTime video meetings to address strategies for dealing with some of the challenges to maintain these overarching criteria for excellence. “Our client wanted exactly what we designed for them in Miami and this was the first time we were going to do this inside an attached, existing structure with no resemblance to the modern style we were going to inject inside,” Charlotte explains. “Entering this home is like experiencing a time warp.”
After the existing interior structure was gutted, most of the interior walls and floor systems were reframed. In line with the HOA rules, the existing wooden casement windows could not be replaced, physically altered or re-styled. The team worked around this in creative ways to support the modern vernacular. In the master bath, a shower enclosure was built inside an outer glass enclosure facing the window. A hidden door provides access for window cleaning and maintaining the oversize privacy roller shade. The open look is further enhanced by a floating bench fabricated to look like a solid piece of marble. Throughout, walls were built within the existing walls to provide a blank canvas to build modern window casings and reveals hiding the existing to be consistent with the flush surfaces desired. This allowed space for all the automated roller shades to be hidden inside the walls. Unique to this project was that Mic needed to oversee the scores of international product deliverables and installation, including the millwork that was being built to exacting measurements and specifications in Miami. Project process information was shared via a cloudbased document management system and FaceTime video. The Dunagan Diverio Design Group specified all their preferred manufacturers such as La Dolce Vita bespoke Italian doors, custom

The bedroom's wall system stands 6" from the exterior wall to hide a triple roller shade system to create variable ambient environments. The entire home flow and function is not just visual: Everything is automated with a top of the line Crestron smart home system, controllable with device technology and voice-activated Alexa. There is a definitive, resort-level finish throughout the interior living spaces, and all involved enjoyed the process in achieving this level of collaborative success on behalf of their client.

Over the past few years, Raleigh has garnered widespread attention as a space where both native North Carolinians and out-of-staters feel welcomed — and for good reason. The state capital has grown from an area defined largely by its surrounding academic institutions to a place with its own unique atmosphere. Innovators are welcomed to set down roots and grow with the city, while travelers are invited to experience the strong food and nightlife for as long as they can. By printing out a Raleigh Beer Trail passport, travelers can simply move down its list of breweries, collecting passport stamps at each one. owned microbrewery; and Lonerider Brewing Company, renowned as one of the top breweries in the country. Raleigh’s got more than just good drinks: It’s also got good food to match. In addition to being featured on numerous country-wide food lists, Raleigh’s individual restaurants have earned critical acclaim, as well. Bida Manda, one of the first full-service Laotian restaurants in the county, is owned by a brother-sister team that serves fine dining in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. They also happen to own the wildly successful Brewery Bhavana right next door. Saint Jacques French Cuisine remains the go-to destination for classic French fare, with an ambiance just right for a special occasion. For some good ol' fashioned seafood the 42nd Street Oyster Far is a must.
Raleigh is also home to The Pho Nomenal Dumpling Truck, owned and operated by Chef Sophia Woo and her business partner Sunny Lin. After winning Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race as the first all-female champions in the show’s history, they used their winnings to open MOFU Shoppe, their first brick-and-mortar location. In addition to the stellar food and drink scene, Raleigh also has a vibrant art scene. The North Carolina Museum of Art features over a dozen art galleries, while the Anne and Jim Goodnight Museum Park features 164 acres of public art installations. As Raleigh continues to grow and diversify, so will its food culture and art scene. Visiting Raleigh allows one the unique opportunity to experience those changes as they’re happening and capture a moment that can’t be replicated in another city.

The Explored // Adventure Appalachian Ski Mountain Appalachian Ski Mountain was the first ski area to open in northwestern North Carolina, and it remains one of the state’s most popular skiing destinations. It features 12 trails, many of which are geared toward intermediate skiers. All are lit for night skiing, and all are easily accessible through lifts. The area’s peak elevation is 4,000 feet, while its longest vertical drop is 365 feet. Appalachian Ski Mountain has worked hard to not only create excellent slopes, but also to foster a thriving winter community. Visitors can participate in winter gear swaps and even book weddings or parties at the mountain’s private venue. Avid skiers and snowboarders can join the Mountain Host program. This program allows volunteers to help out beginners and start their journey to a membership with the National Ski Patrol (NSP). Appalachian Ski Mountain is expected to open November 22 and remain open until March 29. Visitors driving from Charlotte can expect the drive to take just under two hours. Beech Mountain Resort Beech Mountain Resort is a renowned destination for avid ski and snowboarders throughout the eastern U.S.—and for good reason. With a peak elevation of 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain is the highest ski area on the East Coast. It features 17 trails total, with a full range of options for beginners and intermediate and advanced skiers. Beech Mountain Resort also sets itself
apart through its additional amenities. The area boasts four restaurants, two sports shops, an ice skating rink and dedicated tubing slopes. Looking to hang somewhere a little more casual? Stop by the Beech Mountain Brewing Company to taste a full flight of the brewery’s latest brews. For somewhere with a little more wow factor, take a lift up to 5506’ Skybar. Visitors to the Skybar can enjoy a drink with an unparalleled view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wolf Ridge Ski Resort For those looking to experience the slopes as a family, Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is an excellent choice. The area’s top elevation is 4,700 feet high with a vertical drop of 700 feet. Located near Asheville, Wolf Ski Resort preserves its rustic roots with amenities and lodging centered around the natural area. The resort also takes great pride in its Snow Sports School, which offers private lessons for those as young as five and group lessons for those ages 8 and up. Because the resort is smaller, many families find it easier to travel through the area and visit each trail on their list. Not the biggest ski or snowboarding fan? The resort also features an area for tubing. Head to Wolf Ridge Ski Resort to experience a fun, serene winter wonderland that’s just right for veteran skiers and families new to winter sports. “At our restaurants (Haymaker, The Market Place, Billy D's Fried Chicken), we focus so much on the sustainability of our products and the care of their preparation, as well as our work with the local community, to create a sustainable place where farm to table happens on the regular. But a lot of times we forget to be sustainable to ourselves. They say success is measured by hard work and achievement, but without balance how can you truly achieve success? So my resolution is to work to be more sustainable to myself and my family, and to create a better work/life balance. Many of us strive to be "the best" in our field, but let's also strive to be the best to ourselves and our families, and lead by example. That's real sustainability and something I can get behind. - Chef William Dissen Haymaker, The Market Place, and Billy D's Fried Chicken

Twenty New Year's resolutions, from the playful to the profound, from notable Charlotteans. compiled by SUNNY HUBLER / photos JAMEY PRICE or K YO H. NAM
There was more to sourcing resolutions from the Charlotteans we look up to than innocent curiosity and a bit of benign voyeurism. Sure, we wanted to peer behind the veil to catch a glimpse of the inner workings of some very high-achieving people. (Are the Kindreds, as they spearhead one of the most critically-acclaimed restaurants in the nation, trying to workout more and get to bed a little earlier, too…?) What we really set out to see, initially, was how the movers and shakers would be moving and shaking in 2020. It’s a year that, at least in numerical presentation alone, seems prescient and important, and there’s a lot of talk of clarity and clear sightedness—a good intent no matter the coming age but an especially fitting one this go ‘round. But even beyond that, what we discovered we really loved about curating this list was finding out that there truly is a common thread through many of them, and really a common thread to what we’re all doing (and feeling a little guilty about not doing).
We seem to each share in a bit of reflective nostalgia come the ball drop, and we all know, it seems, the things worth renewed effort: Connection, professional growth, personal health, kindness and generosity to others. Maybe there’s something to that, to shedding light on the fact that many of us do want to work toward similar things. Can that not make us better, more supportive, and more engaged community members? And can it not help uncover a little commonality and shared ground in a time when we could all use that reminder? Maybe there is more we share in 2020 than there is that divides us, as each of us steps tentatively into another decade. These are the 2020 resolutions of 20 people who inspire us year in and year out, people who have made themselves integral members of the Charlotte area. Who inspires you? And whose 2020 goals and efforts can you not only get behind but also help create? Here’s to a year better than the one that came before, and may we all support each others’ positive efforts.

We have some professional plans, for sure. We want the next five to be better than the first five; that is paramount. We want what we already have, but built even better. Second, we want to grow in a strategic and sustainable way. And finally, we want to find innovative and creative ways to be more effective change agents in our community. This may not all happen in one year, but we are laserfocused on these goals right now.” - Katy and Joe Kindred Kindred and Hello, Sailor “In 2018, Cam Newton wore my Hamsa Hand Lapel Pin several times publicly

Hopefully this time we can make it through a flight without any huge diaper blowouts! On the business side, my goal is to reach 10,000 people on my online fitness community in 2020. “Self-care” is a buzz term in popular culture right now. Marsha Barnes, founder and owner of The Finance Bar, is working hard to ensure that the financial component of good self-care doesn’t disappear in the shuffle. Through her Charlotte-based business, The Finance Bar, Marsha Barnes guides clients on their journey to financial wellness. In true social work fashion, Barnes is, first and foremost, a helper. She is guided not by profit or power, but by a belief in the ability of financial literacy to transform lives and a dedication to make that ability available to all. “I care deeply about the well-being of every individual who I work with,” she says. “To see their transition does my heart well.” The Finance Bar, in its first iteration, existed as a school bus turned financial literacy hub on wheels. Although The Finance Bar now enjoys a fixed location, the bus continues to make rounds, traveling to schools, corporations, and community organizations. “The mobile bus symbolizes learning and meeting people (literally) where they are on their finance journey.” Now, Barnes also offers private one-on-one coaching, in addition to an online members club, both of which seek to “help others realize that their financial challenges, mindsets, and patterns of handling money can change.” She strives to reframe the way people think about financial planning; instead of the term connoting a practice reserved for the uber wealthy, Barnes hopes people will begin to regard financial planning as an every person activity. Through The Finance Bar, Barnes also offers free, public, bi-monthly classes (called Finances Are Beautiful) for women, who she invites to gather, listen to others’ challenges, celebrate financial success stories, and learn about impactful financial actions.

words JOHN ANDERSON photos JAMEY PRICE
The time is 1752 in County Cork, Ireland. Outside St. John’s Church in Buttevant, two gentlemen fox hunters on horseback are engaged in a bit of friendly banter, perhaps fueled by a pint or two. It might have sounded like this: “O’Callahan, do ye see yonder steeple at St. Mary’s Church? Two quid says I can ride there faster than ye on that nag of yours.” “Edmund Blake,” comes the reply, “ye’ll be chokin’ on the dust from my horse’s hooves.” And the race was on, over hill and dale, rock wall, fence and stream. History doesn’t tell us who won, but that moment in time is believed to be the origin of the sport that grew into what is now known as Steeplechase racing. The first recorded steeplechase over a prepared track with fences was run at Bedford in 1810, Steeplechase racing crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and in 1834 it is believed that the Washington Jockey Club hosted the first race in the United States. It took 243 years to get from Ireland to Charlotte but arrive it did! Now, fast forward another six years to the Brooklandwood Racecourse in Mineral Springs, NC. On April 25, 2020, The Queen's Cup will celebrate 25 years of Steeplechase Racing in the Charlotte region.

For this Silver Jubilee celebration, fifteen-thousand people will flock to Union County to watch 40 or more horses compete in five live races chasing $150,000 in purse money, with the feature on the day, The Queen's Cup MPC ‘Chase. Racegoers will decorate and wear fanciful hats, enjoy elaborate tailgate luncheons at cleverly decorated tables and generally enjoy themselves during, between and after the racing. It wasn’t always that way. Over twenty-five years ago in the Charlotte area, horse racing of any kind was not on anyone’s radar... except for one couple. The establishment of a major regional sporting event and the building of what many believe is the finest jump racing course anywhere in the USA can be attributed to the vision and persistence of Bill and Carrington Price of Mineral Springs. Jeff Teter, a former champion jump jockey and now director of Camden, SC’s 84-year-old Carolina Cup Steeplechase was quoted in the Charlotte Business Journal saying, “There are very few people who would have put in the work, effort and money to create a race course that’s one of the top two or three race courses that the sport has.” Bill and Carrington Price grew up in Baltimore and were friends since kindergarten. Their families often socialized at the

historic steeplechase, The Maryland Hunt Cup. As a teenager, Bill worked for then Maryland trainer Barclay Tagg, now best known for conditioning Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide in 2003. The odyssey began in earnest when the Price’s bought a horse in 1992. Bill Price concedes: “If BREAK CLEAN had not put us in the winner’s circle seven times in two years, I’m not sure we’d be having this conversation. The National Steeplechase Association (NSA), the sanctioning body of Jump Racing in America, approached Price to consider starting a steeplechase race in the Charlotte region. I thought about it, I laughed about it and then I tried to forget about it.” The thought nibbled away on the couple’s psyche for a number of months, and they eventually said to one another, “how hard could it be?” The next quarter century was spent answering that question! Ultimately BREAK CLEAN’s success as a steeplechase race horse, the Prices' love of the sport, and their desire to give back to their community inspired the formation of the Charlotte Steeplechase Foundation in 1994. Flush with enthusiasm, the Prices found a 300-plus acre farm located in very southern Union County off of Gus Eubanks Road, on the SC border. They negotiated rent with the landowners before

even approaching their first sponsor. The construction of the racecourse began in the winter of 1994. The following spring, summer and fall, the couple recruited friends, their children and parents to help pick rocks out of the future racecourse. While family and friends loved the novelty and boldness of the idea, corporate Charlotte was less impressed. Bill Price recalls, “I had a fair number of highly respected business people in Charlotte saying and thinking I was totally mad to do this. What’s the point? Why risk it all just to have a day of tailgating out in the country watching horse racing? Horse racing? Really?” Fortunately a few firms did embrace the vision. Bruce Griffin of Griffin Motor Company in Monroe, then President of the GMC/ Buick Dealers Association, loved the story and bought into it with little or no questions. Sonitrol, Royal & SunAlliance, South Trust Bank, TruGreen and Metro Mobile sponsored the event while a host of smaller companies bought hospitality tents for the inaugural race. Bill Price speculated, “I would guess not one company had any idea what I had sold them or what to expect but it certainly set the stage for the later years.”
The inaugural running, dubbed the TASTE OF THE ‘CHASE took place on a spectacularly clear, warm, autumn afternoon. “Looking back, the best thing we ever did was have the TASTE OF THE ‘CHASE held on November 18, 1995,” Price said. This set the stage for the successful inaugural spring running of The Queen's Cup on April 27, 1996. As attendance kept growing out at the Gus Eubanks course, the Prices set out to find a locale that was closer to Charlotte, easier to access and that was more permanent from an investment standpoint. Their search for a new location is a saga unto itself, but happily for the Charlotte Metro area, it culminated in 1997 with the purchase of the 260-acre farm in Mineral Springs that became the permanent course that Queen's Cup fans enjoy today. A major juggling act ensued. In 1998, and again in 1999, the Queen's Cup was run out on the old location, complete with a visit from Britain’s HRH Princess Anne and racing mystery writer Dick Francis. All of the ticket selling, promoting, recruiting of volunteers and all the detail continued. Meanwhile the Prices raised and invested over $2 million in the

Mineral Springs location to get ready for the first meet at the permanent home in 2000. The Mineral Springs property was dubbed Brooklandwood after the Maryland estate that was the estate of Charles Carroll of Carrolton, the first site of the Maryland Hunt Cup and now the site of St. Paul’s Schools where both Bill and Carrington attended school. When they acquired the land, it was largely in second growth scrub forest. Bill Price taught himself the finer points of racecourse design, grading, drainage and landscaping. Beneath the idyllic expanse of turf enjoyed by Queen's Cup fans lies a field of French drains and pipes rivaling a metropolitan subway system in complexity. That lovely four-acre water feature? It too is an intricate part of a larger engineered system that keeps the racecourse green, safe and runnable and the infield passable regardless of the weather. While Bill focused carving out a grade one racecourse, Carrington focused on the overall “look, feel, and taste” of the venue. To raise the funds to pay back loans, Charlotte Steeplechase Foundation took a page from the Carolina Panther’s playbook and sold their own version of PSL’s — dubbed Personal Space Licenses, which ensured the holder of a choice tailgating space along the racecourse in perpetuity. Additionally, by 2000, all the tents
on Members Hill were sold out and every race was sponsored. The naysayers were wrong. The uncertainty and short recession that followed 9/11/2001 caused more than a little concern, but for the next seven years, the fan base grew among individuals as well as corporations. By its 13th anniversary in 2008, the number of attendees had grown to nearly 18,000, all tailgates, tents and lawnboxes were sold out, and things looked rosy. Then The Great Recession came along. Overall attendance fell as did sponsors. A fateful bequest helped keep the event going. Molly Parker Crosland, an early and fervent supporter, died unexpectedly in July 2008, leaving a $500,000 endowment to the Charlotte Steeplechase Foundation, her biggest beneficiary. Her only requirement was that the event award a minimum purse of $50,000, raising it from $30,000. The feature race was named the Queen’s Cup MPC ‘Chase in her honor. That bequest to the Charlotte Steeplechase Foundation allowed The Queen's Cup to continue to attract top horses, trainers and jockeys through the darkest part of the Great Recession years. While corporate Charlotte slowly returned, in 2011 then President and CEO Linda Hudson of BAE Systems, Inc., who was passionate about the Queen’s Cup, stepped up and became the presenting sponsor for three years. Thanks to Molly and BAE Systems, the Queen's Cup survived and came back strong than ever.

Along the way, the Queen's Cup consistently gave back to the greater community. Since 1996, the Charlotte Steeplechase Foundation (a 501c-3 nonprofit) has donated nearly $1 million to local and regional charities. In 2014, the event’s beneficiary, Alzheimer’s Association, was handed a sizeable check in the winner’s circle just a month after Bill’s mother, Midge Price, died of the disease. In previous years, the Queen's Cup has benefited organizations that include Purple Heart Homes, ALS, Susan G. Komen, Thompson’s Children’s Home, Make a Wish Foundation, Catawba Lands Conservancy and Hospice of Union County. Beyond the fun of tailgating and the enjoyment of watching thoroughbred racing, some of the sustaining aspects of the race experience that keeps fans coming back every year are the hat contest followed closely by the tailgate competition. Two other perennial favorites both draw crowds and keep traffic spread out. The Jack Russell terrier races in the morning and the late afternoon Hot Walk after the last race party each have their own loyal following. In the off-season, Bill and Carrington manage the affairs of the Queen's Cup along with Liz Clayton, the Foundation’s Event Director and Nacho Burgos, the Grounds Manager. As race day draws closer, they are assisted by a small army of courteous, enthusiastic volunteers who help everyone enjoy their time at Brooklandwood. Mia Miller, Volunteer Coordinator directs the efforts of over three hundred volunteers, many of whom have been with the Queen's Cup since the beginning. They also have a Board of Directors who help maintain the Price’s mission.
At the heart of the draw is the vision that the Prices had from the onset. Some Steeplechase races are the meeting place of the local aristocracy; others are one big, boozy outdoor fraternity party. The Queen's Cup is neither. The goal from the beginning was to always attract a nice, quality audience with sponsors who consider Queen's Cup as their can’t miss event and race goers who enjoy the day, the beauty of the farm, the event and the tradition. (Bill) Price said. “We’re not there yet but I think we’re getting closer every year.” It’s worth mentioning that neither of the Prices draws a salary from the event and Bill’s full time “day job” is President of Sonitrol Security Services of Charlotte. The Queen’s Cup is also a family affair as both their children Jamey and Brent helped pick rocks at both the old and new course along with putting up signage and assembling the jumps. Today, Jamey is a professional sports photojournalist shooting the event while Brent is in charge of the Queen’s Cup's all important social media. Bill related: “Quite frankly, this is the hardest thing I have ever done in my business career. It’s the biggest, most complex volunteer job the both of us have ever had. Carrington and I look forward to the day when we can just ‘show up’ to the races and watch without a worry in the world.” All race-goers hope that the Prices get their wish, but until that happy day, please keep doing what you do.
