THE NOTE

No. 65

T

en years ago, I was editor of a small home and design magazine in Boone, NC called High Country Home. In each issue we would showcase the most spectacular architecture in the Blue Ridge. We featured amazing log cabins in Blowing Rock, reclaimed timberframe homes in Banner Elk, stunning farmhouses in Valle Crucis, and all kinds of other mountain retreats across Carolina's Appalachian Mountains. As a fan of architecture and design, working on that particular magazine was something I really enjoyed, from the planning of each issue to the incredible photo shoots to the layout of every story. I got to see some truly amazing architecture (some homes were real feats built on the edge of ridges) and impressive builds. The only thing I wasn't ever thrilled about when it came to creating that particular magazine was the interior design of that area. It all seemed to fit the mountain/rustic theme fairly well, but it was always relatively homogenous and tame. It wasn't until I moved to Charlotte that I realized how much of an impact truly good interior design can make on a space. Obviously, having a talented architect and a detail-oriented builder is paramount, but a gifted interior designer can add that extra level of detail and panache that finishes a home. And in this city we are lucky to have so many incredible designers. In this issue we showcase an array of different styles and approaches to interior design from the Queen City's most talented including Beth Keim, Amy Vermillion, Lisa Sherry, Jaclyn Ehrlich, Kelly Cruz, Karen Kettler, Patrick Lewis, Traci Zeller, Theory, Isabella, House of Nomad, Black Dove Interiors, Pheasant Hill Designs, and more. Along with all of the design-centric content, you'll also find great stories on artist Lindsay Jones, Bossy Beulah's, Eight + Sand, Emily Claire Designs, Madcap, and much more. We hope you enjoy! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor | Brett Barter, Publisher

She is a member of Studio 117, a local art studio and workshop based in Charlotte, NC. In addition to Studio 117, Lindsay also has paintings available for purchase at Bee Street Gallery, Vision Gallery, Blowing Rock Gallery and Frameworks, Ava Gallery, Straight to Art, Art Salon and BOCO Art Gallery. Lindsay has exhibited at a variety of venues including McColl Center for Art & Innovation and donated paintings to nonprofit art auctions; read more about Lindsay’s community involvement here. She has recently partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte to create “Art Share,” a program that provides commissioned works of art for new Habitat homeowners and Critical Home Repair clients. “As a young child, I always enjoyed making things. The process of coming up with an idea and then creating something that wasn’t there before was exciting.” 48 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • FEB / MAR 2020

What is your background/training in? I ended up as an oil painter by complete chance. I attended Wake Forest University and my freshman advisor spoke highly of the oil painting professor in Wake’s art department, Paige Laughlin. I thought, well sure! I’ll give it a try. After I enrolled in her class, I found out I was the only non-art major taking intro to oil painting, I tried to drop the class. She said, “If you are willing to try, I am willing to teach.” I ended up minoring in Studio Art and majoring in Communications. While I spent the bulk of my twenties and thirties working in the public relations and communications sector, I always painted when I could. When my youngest child enrolled in kindergarten, my time opened up and I started taking an oil painting class with Andy Braitman. Painting with him was truly the difference maker for me. He helped me change my mindset and I started to view painting more as a profession than a hobby. Before I began painting full-time, I worked as a consultant providing marketing and communications support for nonprofit organizations in Charlotte. This influenced my art career in that I am always looking for ways to connect with the community through my art and make a positive difference.

The Culture // Musings

You’ve studied art at several intuitions, including Casa Artom in Venice, Italy. Tell us how did you find your way to Charlotte? I spent a semester abroad with Wake Forest’s history department living in Casa Artom on the Grand Canal beside the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. It was an amazing experience. While there, I participated in an independent art study focused on drawing, water color and photography. I still find inspiration from that experience in my work today as an oil painter. I was born and raised in Charlotte and have always considered this home. After graduating from West Charlotte High School and Wake Forest University, I moved to Washington, DC. Five years later, I married my high school sweetheart and it was an easy decision to move back to Charlotte. What sparked your interest in art? As a young child, I always enjoyed making things. The process of coming up with an idea and then creating something that wasn’t there before was exciting. Whether I was making up songs on the piano, writing poetry and music lyrics, painting with water color, working with clay or making jewelry, I loved

50 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • FEB / MAR 2020

the creative process. As an adult, my life experiences have led me to focus my creative energy on cultivating my love of fine art and oil painting. What inspired you to start your own business? Starting my own art business was just another way of being creative. Prior to Lindsay H. Jones Fine Art, I started a small marketing agency with a dear friend to assist nonprofits. I really like the process of beginning something new — whether it is a new business, new idea or new painting. While I enjoy working for myself, painting can also be isolating. As an extrovert, creating in a studio with other artists (and not in my kitchen) was an important step for me. Studio 117 has been a game changer for me and my work has benefitted from having a dedicated place to paint surrounded by other artists. Who are some of your favorite artists? I will always admire my two primary painting instructors, Andy Braitman and Paige Laughlin, not only for their ability to teach and cultivate a love of the arts, but also for the way they have distinguished themselves in cultivating their own distinctive style.

Can you tell us about this theme and from where you draw this inspiration? There is so much beauty in the world. It could be easy to go about our lives not noticing the beauty around us. I draw my inspiration from trying to capture and celebrate the beauty and mystery of the natural world. Painting these images helps me pause, to be still long enough to take a breath and appreciate my surroundings and experiences. Most of my paintings are based on places where I have traveled or environments that have inspired me. As an artist who believes in the power of art to heal, you often give back and serve through your pieces. As an artist, why do you believe this is important? I’ve helped facilitate art projects with children in hospital settings and firmly believe that art plays a key role in the healing process for both children and adults. When we are sick or hurting, there is a sense that we lose control over our own lives. Art not only provides an outlet for expressing those feelings, but it helps regain a sense of control. info lindsayhjonesfineart.com

CL ASSIC BL ACK The Basalt Sculpture of Wedgwood and his contemporaries words LIZA CARRASQUILLO

From February 8 to August 30, The Mint Museum Randolph will feature Classic Black: The Basalt Sculpture of Wedgwood and His Contemporaries. This stunning exhibit features over 100 ceramic objects from public and private collections in both England and the United States — all made from black basalt. Black basalt was popularized in the late 1800s after Josiah Wedgwood added manganese and carr to the clay he worked with.

Long before Claire Jacobs discovered her love of jewelry design, she knew she’d be an artist. As a child, she filled up countless sketchbooks with her ideas, and today, at work in her studio, she does the same. After spending years building up her creative work alongside a full-time job, Claire finally reached a place where she could continue to grow independently. Now, Charlotte shoppers can find a wide range of stunning handmade jewelry by Emily Claire Designs, from bold necklaces to statement rings. Claire sat down with us to talk about her inspiration, her creative eye, and her future plans.

What excites you about the jewelry making industry? Are there any current trends that you love? I love the creativity I see in jewelry. Designers are constantly trying to innovate and come up with new ideas… I love it when I see a fresh approach. Designers are doing some really interesting things with gemstones right now. Little H is an artist who comes to mind because she is doing some really unique designs with pearls. Tell us about your jewelry design style and how you learned it. What makes your collections one-of-a-kind? I tend to lean toward simplicity and elegance in my design. While my work has an artistic bend because all my pieces are handmade and limited edition, it still feels classic. I want my jewelry easy to wear, versatile, and hopefully timeless enough for people to keep for years. Can you tell us about your creative process? Where do you turn for inspiration? I tend to find my inspiration through experimentation at the bench, and I turn to the materials. Say, for instance, I have a beautiful stone to set. I think about what metal colors and textures would work the best and what kind of setting would

60 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • FEB / MAR 2020

show off the stone. Then, I go to my sketchbook and start coming up with ideas. I also try to keep evolving my designs. I don’t want to make the same pieces over and over from year to year. If I find elements I like, I’ll start to build a collection around that motif. You’ve crafted so many beautiful pieces. What’s your favorite piece to date, and what made it so special? Recently, I made a custom silver, gold, and aquamarine ring that I really loved. It was a large piece and quite complex to fabricate, so I’m proud of it. I’ve also made engagement rings for two close friends, and that was super fun. I love being in on those types of surprises! What do you have planned for the future? Lately, I’ve been getting back to my artistic roots by doing some oil paintings. I’m loving having another creative outlet in addition to the jewelry, so you can expect to see a lot more artwork coming out of my studio in the future! info @emilyclairejewelry emilyclairedesigns.com

“It is amazing how sometimes the life you think you want and how life turns out are so different, but so good.” When did your passion for making accessories begin? As long as I can remember I’ve always been making something to wear. From friendship bracelets to clover crowns as a child, to knitting and wire wrapping jewelry — I think it’s in my blood. What do you find most interesting about using nature as your inspiration for your jewelry? I love the details of nature. I first became intrigued when I picked up macro photography as a hobby. I could not get over how delicate the patterns and lines in leaves alone

were. And as a result, I wanted to translate that to pieces of art that were simplistic enough to wear every day. How did you learn how to do leatherwork? I stumbled into it... At the time I was using leather scraps for jewelry, and later a friend suggested that I make clutches. It was addicting, and the rest is history! Do you use eco-friendly processes in your products? We salvage the majority of our leather from the local upholstery industry. We literally dig through bins and

In its earliest form, this chicken sammie debuted at King’s Kitchen, but Noble knew its home was elsewhere. He envisioned a modest “chicken shack,” with fast casual service, counter seating, and an open kitchen, and he teamed up with The Johnson Studio to make it happen. The design team nailed it: Bossy Buelah’s feels like your favorite diner — no frills, just low key vibes, good food, and good people. Enjoy your meal on the patio or mosey over to the beer garden that separates Bossy Beulah’s from Noble Smoke on Freedom Drive. Both Bossy Beulah’s and Noble Smoke — and the beer garden that divides them — attract all kinds of folk. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a crispy chicken sandwich or a pile of fall-off-thebone brisket? There’s a reason why these foods have endured throughout generations. Of course, delicious food alone won’t deliver a successful restaurant. economic profiles and races brought to the same space by good food. “People are the most important thing in this business,” asserts Noble. “A customer can love the food, but if the people aren’t nice or friendly, then I don’t care how good the food is, the customer isn’t coming back.” Jim Noble has a knack for bringing customers back to his restaurants. He delivers the perfect storm of fresh ingredients, curated menus, thoughtfully designed ambience, and irresistible people. And he does it over and over and over again. In fact, keep an eye trained on Noble in 2020, when he’ll expand Rooster’s to other cities in the Southeast, get cracking on a new project on Selwyn Avenue, and set to work opening more Bossy Beulah’s locations, to the delight of, well, everyone. info bossybeulahs.com @bossybeulahs

Eight + Sand offers up scratch-made counter service on New Bern Street in South End. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE

Take the light rail to the New Bern station and you’ll see a wall of windows when you disembark, covered by an awning with the sign “Eight + Sand.” On the North American railway, to call “eight and sand” after a departing railroad worker was the equivalent of yelling “break a leg” to someone about to mount the stage. In layman’s terms, it means good luck. The eight is derived from the fastest speed on a train throttle, while sand references sand applied to prevent slipping. Thus, the sign hanging above an awning adjacent to the New Bern light rail station bids passerby a swift and safe journey. It also marks the location of one of Charlotte’s newest eateries, brought to life by owners Grant Arons, Joe Locke, Jon Gajewski, as well as co-owners

(and founders of Not Just Coffee) James and Miracle Yoder. Primarily white with royal blue accents, the interior of Eight + Sand is airy and open. Light wood furniture rests aside no shortage of plants and a measured dose of open shelving. “I describe our interior as Modern Scandi,” says coowner Grant Arons. “It's a great canvas for letting the people, food, and plants stand out.” In fact, it’s hard to imagine a setting in which the food would not stand out. Eight + Sand dishes out chef-inspired, scratchmade food in a counter service setting. Most ingredients are locally sourced, resulting in delectably fresh and sustainable dishes, from breakfast sandwiches to house-made soup to artisan sandwiches and salads.

Your Daily Bread — Bread anchors the food menu. The eatery uses heritage (non-GMO) Turkey red wheat, which Eight + Sand stone mills in house, grinding the entire wheat berry together, before transforming it into naturally leavened sourdoughs. The slow process results in breads that are more digestible, healthier, and better tasting. In fact, many diners with gluten sensitivity will find they can enjoy Eight + Sand bread. On the weekends, the bread shines through a giant stuffed brioche french toast, clocking in at seven inches long and over an inch thick. “This french toast is what all other french toast aspires to be,” says Arons. Weekday breakfast offerings include the ricotta and jam toast — silky housemade ricotta smeared over stone milled sourdough toast and topped with seasonal jam. The most popular breakfast item, though, is the breakfast bowl, a colorful and

flavorful blast of breakfast goodness containing Eight + Sand’s signature crunks (crispy potato bites), caramelized onions and peppers, sautéed kale, free range egg, avocado, and parsley pesto. Top off your breakfast with a pastry, like a filled donut, dulce de leche cruffin, or flaky croissant, whipped up by pastry chef Christa Smith. Breakfast is served until four, when you’ll need to turn your eye to the lunch and dinner offerings (though you may want to do so before then). The most popular dishes are the panko chicken sandwich and the pastrami sandwich (featuring local beef cured in house for 14 days). However, vegetarians and vegans needn’t fret: Chef de Cuisine Collin Cook is a vegetarian and specializes in vegan and vegetarian cooking, as evidenced by his outstanding vegan banh mi, vegan philly, and the signature Eight + Sand salad. With so many complex flavors and scratch-made dishes, it’s easy to understand why Arons claims, “We aren't your typical bakery or sandwich shop.”

The Canyon Road is her nod to the experience and a gateway drink for Mezcal. It achieves next level smokiness with a flaming orange, balanced by the citrusy notes of orange curacao and lime juice. Chef Tim Groody made his name in Charlotte over the decades as one of the first local chefs to create sustained relationships with local farmers. In fall of 2019, he took his years of experience and his unique touch to Stoke, part of the Charlotte Marriott Center City, as their executive chef. One thing Stoke has perfected is the art of using the freshest seasonal ingredients paired perfectly with just the right glass of wine. Chef’s take on a guinea hen changes month to month, but it always pairs well with one of the house reds. Amber Cagle has a love for birds (as captured by a wrist tattoo she sports). “Black Dove” was an easy choice of a moniker for her edgy, new interior design company. The dove represents peace and love, both of which describe her work ethos, too. After falling in love with art at a young age, Cagle majored in interior design at Appalachian State and joined a commercial architecture firm in Charlotte shortly thereafter. Her career began with small tasks such as picking out furniture for restaurants, salons, and libraries. Eight years later, she found

John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon are the proud owners of Madcap Cottage, a global interior design and lifestyle product company headquartered in North Carolina. From wallpaper and fabrics to tabletop, rugs, lighting, and more, Madcap Cottage specializes in British inspired prints and patterns. Based on their eye-catching, stylish, southern-infused work, the firm has received attention from HGTV, Country Living, and the New York Times, among others. Jason and John (and the pups) chatted with us about the seeds of the business, their style inspiration, and where the name came from.

What inspired you to start the business? First and foremost, John and I are storytellers. We both come from publishing backgrounds as home and lifestyle editors, and we finally reached a point where we said ‘why are we writing about everyone else, let’s create our own destiny.’ We began designing and bringing our clients’ personal storylines to life. Jason and John, how did you two meet? I was at a wedding for the Health Editor at Vogue, and a woman at the reception kept asking me heaps of questions. I thought she

A few days later, she called me at my job and suggested I meet a friend of hers. I took a chance and drove into the city and met her and John at a bar in Manhattan’s West Village. He promptly spilled a cosmopolitan on my white jeans, but I was smitten. How did you select the name? We love the term “Madcap,” as it is very throwback and captures a certain Auntie Mame-like, car-to-the-wind whimsy. We also love the intimacy of the term “Cottage.” Putting the two words together is an invitation to fun, and that’s the spirit that we want to convey with our lifestyle brand. Where do you get inspiration? Who are some designers that inspire you? Travel. Fashion. Vintage design books. Movies. Novels. History. Designers of the past such as Elsie de Wolf, Billy Haines, and Ruby Ross Wood, and Otto Zenke are all of huge inspiration. We are storytellers and passionate travelers with sketchpads and notebooks forever in hand.

“We are storytellers and passionate travelers with sketchpads and notebooks forever in hand.” We noticed many of your designs have a Southern flair. Is that intentional? Absolutely! Southerners love color, travel, and history and truly value gracious living, and that’s all such a tenet of the Madcap Cottage brand. So many of America’s great design talents hail from the South, and there’s a reason why. How would you describe each of your aesthetics? How do the two merge? We have very similar aesthetics and sensibility but bring different viewpoints and talents to the table. We love needlepoint, vintage textiles, great department stores of the past, London but not Paris, Fleur Cowles… John and I go shopping at a flea market and meet up and each will have identified the exact same five things as must haves.

As one of Charlotte’s most beloved hardware stores, Blackhawk Hardware’s Garden Center exemplifies what it means to be a family-owned business. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO photos JAMEY PRICE

Charlotte is a city of rapid expansion in every sense of the word, from new eateries and bars to housing developments and offices. Yet, with so much of a focus on the new, we sometimes forget about the city staples that have been here for ages—the businesses that have supported Charlotte locals for generations. That consistency and support is part of what makes Blackhawk Hardware and Garden Center so special.

In 1976, Blackhawk Hardware found its home in the historic Park Road Shopping Center. It started out as a simple store selling traditional hardware, but soon expanded to include niche selections like kitchenware. Their loyal customer base boomed with the addition of a full garden center. Unlike big-box garden center counterparts, the one at Blackhawk Hardware actually feels like a garden. Instead of concrete

Karen Kettler, of Karen Kettler Design, completed this kitchen overhaul in September of 2019. The Dilworth home belonged to clients who had recently relocated from New Jersey: Their hope was completion of the kitchen by their move-in date. The result was that all planning was done long distance. “Challenging,” Karen acknowledges, “but we managed to get it done shortly after they moved in.” Karen and her team added a beam to open the kitchen to a previous family room addition on the back of the house, with the end result a more inviting open space with well-planned

storage. The large island with the range wall became a focal point, giving the space an airy and open feel. The floating shelves were matched to the new wood floor to add warmth, and the old powder room was relocated to give space for the fridge and pantries. “This allowed us to widen the space for a bigger island,” Karen explains. The space was also stylized by Kirstin Swimmer of Rogue Interiors. The cabinetry came from Touchstone Fine Cabinetry, tile by Walker Zanger, the KitchenAid appliances were supplied by Ferguson, and the Moen faucet came from Majestic Bath.

With this Eastover neighborhood redesign, Patrick Lewis, of the Charlotte-based firm Patrick Lewis Interiors, did what he does best: achieve a relaxed, yet refined elegance in the execution of this dining space. The clients wanted something fairly straightforward: To brighten and modernize their home, particularly through better use of light and accessories to give the room an updated feel.

Hidell Brooks Gallery provided the art by Mel Rea and the stylish lamps are B.D. Jeffries. Patrick sourced the chairs from A Hoke/Lee Industries and the eye-catching table is Robert James. The light fixture also provides a focal point for the room, while the well-appointed credenza helps balance the space. This is a dining room anyone would want to gather in.

According to Kelly, the principal designer and owner of Kelly Cruz Interiors, this room started with “a Mrs. wanting acrylic chairs, and Mister wanting a live edge table.” The homeowners also knew they wanted a low maintenance breakfast area that could comfortably seat the two of them, but accommodate guests, too. The plentiful windows showcase the view of the lake and boats, something Cruz wanted to be sure remained front and center. “I’ve been designing for decades but this house gave me a huge challenge in scale,” Kelly adds. “All the ceilings are very high, and the interior doors are ten feet tall!” Going back to that live edge table from the clients’ origi-

nal conception... “We couldn’t reconcile the live edge table top with the architectural style of the home and their desire to have modern elements,” Kelly shares, “so we compromised by having a table top made by Mitchelcraft Cabinetry from a solid piece of wood sourced in the North Carolina mountains.” The resulting room feels earthy, yet whimsical. Its spaciousness and comfortability allows guests to gather around the table any time. Despite those super high ceilings, the footprints of each room are average size, so getting the furniture to be the right scale with the hanging light fixtures took a couple tries… but in the end, the breakfast nook today is exactly the space the clients and Kelly dreamed it to be.

Due to its utilitarian past, this space never really got a lot of love, architecturally speaking, designer Traci Zeller tells us. Crooked exposed beams and exposed brick walls are the room’s hallmarks, which Traci says she wouldn’t have dreamt of covering up in the redesign process. “They're a nod to the home's past,” Traci explained. “I believe in completely owning who and what you are and making it amazing, and the same goes for this room... That said, none of that meant it couldn’t be a completely beautifully furnished space, which is exactly what I aimed for.” By painting the ceiling pink, and choosing shades of brown,

a rich, grassy green, and the prettiest blooming pale pinks and fuchsias, Traci achieved a garden-inspired color palette. She also incorporated her love of texture with a soft, nubby chenille, natural linen, and rich velvet. The design “fits" with the home’s more formal rooms in a way that honors the room's humble origins and simple bones. The artwork over the chairs is by William McClure, represented by Anne Neilson Fine Art, the carpet is “Antilocarpa” in Almond by Stark Carpet, the floor lamp is Circa Lighting, and the herringbone throws and pink pottery jars are Ballard Designs.

This custom-built Dilworth home was created especially for a couple with a growing family. One of the family’s top requests was fairly simple: A large, open kitchen with ample seating and an island. Emily Hudgens, of Theory Design Studio, immediately understood the clients were also looking to have the kitchen be the heart of the home, connected to the main living and dining area. “The wife loves to cook and host family and friends,” Emily

explains. “Function and storage were at the top of their list, as well as having a separate prep kitchen off the back of the main kitchen. They wanted a classic and timeless kitchen with a little pizzazz in the fixtures and finishes.” The result was a fully-functional, distinguished, and stylish kitchen with maximized storage space. The countertop came from InStyle Charlotte, flooring by Cope & Stick, cabinets from Eudy’s Cabinets, and the lights are Feiss from J. Landon.

Isabella is a staple in Charlotte when it comes to luxury bed and bath linens. The store’s items are all handpicked for both functionality and beauty. Any homeowner looking to elevate their interior design can find what they need at Isabella. Isabella’s in-house designers have taken on a variety of projects over the years, including this beautiful room in a well-designed Dilworth home. The clients wanted an aesthetically inviting space, filled with color and pattern,

that could still be functional for their young children at home. Designer Bryn Dunn made it feel happy and inviting; For example, the banquette is made of faux leather which is great for art projects at the round kitchen table. The designer also created hidden storage throughout the rooms for added functionality. Most of the décor and furnishings came from Isabella, but Dunn also used pieces from other local vendors like CB2 and art by local artist Laura Park.

House of Nomad was founded by two designers with a passion for travel and an eye for finding creativity in the most unlikely places. Where others see only properties far past their prime, duo designers Berkeley Minkhorst and Kelley Lentini see stunning architecture and unique potential. Such was the case with this stylish, recent project in Plaza Midwood. The client’s home was built in 1946. Under the creative direction of Minkhorst and Lentini, the historic

residence underwent a whole-home remodel, while keeping the character and history of the home. It’s a nod to modern with old bones. The designers worked with local Charlotte vendors to complete the vision, including Carolina Urban Lumber, and they incorporated hand-picked pieces from their many travels abroad, such as Moroccan rugs and baskets. The unique fusion is an HON mainstay, making for a home that’s both fresh and preserved.

Henry himself, William Sidney Porter, author of classic short stories such as Of Cabbages and Kings and The Ransom of Red Chief and a native of Greensboro. Since its original opening and construction, the hotel has received both a new building and a new location, but it still preserves its sense of nostalgia and charm. Surrounded by ample access to the arts, opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, and excellent dining, The O. Henry is a clear choice.

The hotel's rooms are decorated and inspired by the sense of curiosity and wonder of O. Henry Tea, with a full menu of specialty sandwiches and scones, croissants, crumpets, and teas, of course. The walls of the hotel are decorated with copious pieces of art, many by their artist-in-residence, Chip Holton, a great deal of his work inspired by classic art deco.

It is also a place that has borne witness to a fair share of American history, including a site where George Washington spent the night while passing through South Carolina. For those who are familiar with South Carolina, Georgetown lies halfway between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, and is the state's third oldest city. An American history enthusiast would have a lot to do here, since the town has five museums that each delve into a different branch of South Carolina history. For example, the Rice Museum doesn't sound like the most appealing tourist attraction until you learn that rice alone made Georgetown the wealthiest county among the 13 original colonies after the Revolutionary War. This large demand for harvesting such a dominant cash crop meant importing many African slaves who, in addition to farming, excelled in a multitude of crafts like fishing, herding, bricklaying, and more. In fact, for a period of the 1800s, slaves composed 85 percent of Georgetown’s popula-

tion. After the Civil War, the city went through another shift as the era of Georgetown’s thriving rice trade came to an end. The economic replacement to rice became lumber and a lucrative saw mill was built west of the city. But more than anything, a space needs a combination of new and old with really nothing mass-produced,” she explains. Unique, carefully-selected lighting and eye-grabbing art are the keys of any Beth Keim design—as evidenced in this Lake Norman gem. eight months of total renovation, aided by the contractors at Corbin Homes. This included taking out vaulted ceilings to allow for more bedrooms upstairs while also adding in a cozy feel without the dead air and wasted space. The house is comfortably large at 9,000 square feet with seven bedrooms, four full and two half-baths, plus a music room, family room, and a full basement media/living space. “It was clear to me from the beginning that I needed to keep this house cohesive,” Beth explains. “When this particular client loved the vibe of my own mountain house and feel of my office, I knew this would be a great relationship in that most of the things I loved style-wise, they did as well.”

Lucy and Company’s primary goal this time was to avoid overdesigning, and to keep the spaces throughout the house clean and clutter-free. This project, meant to accommodate such a large family, was all about unity and togetherness. Beth describes the overarching aesthetic as “a big dose of Scandinavian mixed with mid-century pieces and a good deal of collected vintage ones, too.” The full basement, which houses the large, U-shaped sectional, was one of the most important rooms in the house: Its one main purpose is family movie watching. The kitchen and family rooms are also the hearts of the home, so Beth kept both simple and livable with just a few key pieces.

“A successful project comes with a great deal of trust.” The lighting throughout is unique but streamlined, with an abundance of interesting shapes and textures. Beth used plenty of local vendors to tie the home together: The appliances were sourced through Ferguson, hardware by Bird Decorative Hardware, and cabinets by Eudy Cabinetry. She also pulled in two of her favorites tradesmen, Jacob Wolfe and Tuan Le (of 2dash1) for an entirely new banister and re-worked front door. Most of the accessories Beth sourced came from various antique shops, and she used art by Scott Kerr and Keith Keim.

Jaclyn Ehrlich transforms a Myers Park condominium into a home in the French countryside.

In 2018, talented designer Jaclyn Ehrlich devoted eight months to remodeling this Myers Park condo, transforming it into a home that could just as easily be in the French countryside as in a neighborhood of Charlotte. The client, a woman in her 70s, moved from Atlanta to Charlotte in order to live closer to her daughter. As she envisioned her new home, she hoped for a space that felt welcoming and comfortable, yet still appropriate for both informal and formal entertaining.

158 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • FEB / MAR 2020

The client’s husband was an avid art and antique collector. Ehrlich intended for his pieces to feel intentionally placed and complimentary of the overall aesthetic of the new home, without dominating the space or evoking the stiff, formal vibe of a museum. “It was critical to me that we kept enough pieces from her other homes that it was cozy and familiar but also that we added enough new fresh pieces so that it felt fresh and full of energy,” says Ehrlich. “I really wanted every area of this condo to feel warm and a bit magical.”

The Exclusives

The condominium is 3,300 square feet and includes two bedrooms, two and a half baths, a formal living room, a formal dining room, kitchen, a keeping room, and a study. Additionally, three balconies offer scenic panoramas. The exterior is covered in a stately French limestone, while the interior is painted wall-to-wall with Benjamin Moore Ballet White. With a gentle matte finish, this neutral color is the perfect backdrop for artwork and wall sconces. Although Ehrlich is proud of every improvement she made to this home, her favorite rooms are the dining room and keeping room. “The dining room was inspired by a gorgeous, large antique wall plaque that the client and her husband found in France from an old chateau,” says Ehrlich. Like many spaces in the condo, the rest of the design tumbled from that focal point. Ehrlich installed an antique crystal chande-

lier that was in the client’s previous residence over the table. She topped off the design with a full wall of antiqued French glass squares. Meanwhile, the keeping room is all about coziness. Ehrlich designed a nook perfect for relaxation; either alone, enjoying the view through the large windows, or with friends. Four swivel chairs enable both scenarios. In this Myers Park condo, Ehrlich invited the French country inside—then added a dash of global influence for good measure. The result is a sophisticated residence that nonetheless retains an inviting atmosphere.

“I really wanted every area of this condo to feel warm and a bit magical.”

High Point might not be the first city that comes to mind when native North Carolinians think of creative communities, but interior designer Lisa Sherry knows better. Nestled into the corner of town lies Emerywood, a neighborhood once dominated throughout the ’60s and ’70s by furniture and textile titans. With large wallets and an eye for art, those titans transformed the small area into a picturesque American community, complete with wide lawns, leafy trees and custom-designed homes. “Today, Emerywood is a gracious and lovely area,” notes Sherry. “There’s a wonderful creative vibe here.” Enamored by the neighborhood, Sherry eventually found a house there that was just right for her design aspirations — an

old 6,000-square-foot Georgian home built in 1926, complete with five bedrooms, four baths and three living areas. Once owned by a couple that ran a Rolls Royce dealership, the house had been sitting empty for years, so its design was anything but modern. “The house had been maintained but not updated since the ’60s and ’70s,” says Sherry. “It needed significant bath and kitchen renovations, as well as plumbing and electrical updates.” Sherry welcomed the challenge and got to work creating a home that honored its Georgian-style roots while showcasing modern elements and color palettes. She brought in custom upholstery from Verellen, new kitchen appliances from

Traditional and modern live in happy harmony here.” To create that harmony, Sherry blended a monochromatic color scheme with pops of earthy color and a strong emphasis on natural light. She turned the traditional living room into a playroom and chose the bright, open sunroom as the primary living area. “I always follow Mother Nature, and I love to blur interior and exterior spaces,” says Sherry. “This is one of the reasons I moved the living room to the former sun porch. It’s enclosed by a glass wall— flooded with light. That’s where we wanted to ‘live.’” The living room wasn’t the only room swapped around in the home. Sherry also created a TV room out of a music room and

a new sunroom for extra living space. She even remodeled all four bathrooms and created an open kitchen from scratch. According to Sherry, “The kitchen is an entire new incarnation. A series of small rooms and pantries were opened to create a glorious space, including a ten-foot island.” The home features both open areas for entertaining and secluded areas for relaxing in peace. This dichotomy of airy spaces and small nooks makes it functional and homey. Add all of the design details and you have a real winner: By enhancing the home’s Georgian-style trim, molding and architecture with clean, modern elements, Sherry has designed a home that suits her family’s lifestyle and shows off her ideal design style. info lisasherryinterieurs.com / @lisasherryinterieurs

What’s immediately apparent when viewing Amy Vermillion’s portfolio is her talent for stunning designs. If you take a closer look, you’ll notice something else: Amy Vermillion facilitates a design process that perfectly straddles guidance and collaboration, resulting in spaces impeccably appointed but also unique to each client’s lifestyle. “It is crucial to really listen to our clients and find out how they live and work,” attests Amy. “I also think about who is the best builder or architect or tradesperson for that client based on budget, timing, and personality. Everything mixes together to create a cohesive team, collaborative environment, realistic budget, and workable timeframe.”

This home, located in Foxcroft, exemplifies how fruitful a positive designerclient relationship can be. Although Amy and her client had been following each other on Instagram for some time, they hadn’t met in person until this design project. During their first meeting, it was as though they’d already known each other for years. The two women collaborated to create a house customized to the client’s taste and lifestyle. The client’s passion for fashion shines through in the kitchen, where Amy added rockstuds on the kitchen island, a nod to Valentino Garavani. The kitchen facelift also included adding a new island and changing the hood. The team laid down a beautiful quartzite, which has

For the finishing touches, Amy sourced the lights from Charleston and reupholstered the client’s bar stools in a snake vinyl. When the client is entertaining, the kitchen functions in tandem with a butler’s pantry. Before Amy got her hands on it, the butler’s pantry was an empty space where the previous homeowners had an armoire. Now, the space features walnut

counters, lighted shelves, and curved doors made from a French antique mirror. The dining room blends old and new, while also carrying the kitchen’s black and white color scheme. The client brought an impressive collection of antiques to the project. Amy reupholstered her antique caned French dining chairs and added two chairs in a seal colored leather that inject a dose of modernity without compromising the aesthetic.

“Setting and exceeding client expectations is what makes a client feel they not only love their home but their money was well spent.” In the family room, a cozy stone fireplace is flanked by lit built-ins, which were handscribed by the cabinet maker to the stone, ensuring a perfect fit. A custom sectional fills the room perfectly, shadowed by a large reeded library table. The client’s collection of textured, horn, and faux bois boxes add decorative variety, as do the window treatments, which are made from a metallic-printed Jim Thompson. One of the most complete transformations took place in the master bath. Gold and yellow originally, the bathroom needed major aesthetic improvements, which Amy delivered with a few hundred square feet of pristine white Calacatta marble. She nestled a tub inset into a marble alcove and revamped the cabinetry to create a luxurious retreat.

In this home, the humans aren’t the only residents needing baths. Two doodles also, on occasion, need to get clean and can do so easily thanks to a custom made dog shower. Installed at the perfect height given the client’s size, the tub is outfitted with smooth river rock on the floor and surrounded by Osborne & Little dog silhouette paper. “Setting and exceeding client expectations is what makes a client feel they not only love their home but their money was well spent,” observes Amy. In this home, Amy worked closely with her client to realize a vision more spectacularly than it could have even been imagined. info amyvermillion.com / @amyvermillioninteriors

elly Cruz, of Charlotte’s Kelly Cruz Interiors, has been in the interior industry for over 25 years. Today, she helms a thriving, full-service design firm after identifying a love for art, space planning, and geometrics early in her college career. More than anything, Kelly says, it’s the diversity of design that keeps her interested and passionate about the work on a daily basis. She is an expert at navigating this diversity, and at suiting her clients’ taste with the architecture of the structure. If she has one signature, it’s that every space Kelly touches is comfortable and approachable. Her process starts simply, like a good, honest conversation between friends:

From there, Kelly creates a nurturing feeling in the home she’s working on through reliable, bold colors used as accents on a foundation of neutrals. She also coaches clients in accessorizing their homes in a curated fashion, rather than placing items to “fill the spot.” Collections of art and accessories that are meaningful to the clients add to the comfort they can experience in their homes.
