t seems like we were swimming at the lake and enjoying warm summer days just yesterday. Now, after a brief, colorful fall the holidays have arrived here in Charlotte and we at QC Exclusive are very excited. 2020 has been a hard year for everyone, and frankly, one of the saddest I can remember. But thankfully, a new season is here: the most woderful time of the year. It's the season of giving, of seeing or at least facetiming the family, of presents, of ham, and fixins, and pie. It's these reasons and so many more that make it the merriest of seasons. And then there's New Year's Day and a new start, something we all need and I'm sure are looking forward to. In this issue we highlight many of the amazing things about the holidays in Charlotte from our favorite places to shop local for gifts to the Queen City's charities and philanthropies you should be giving to this year. A

Anne Neilson is a name that creates something of a buzz in Charlotte, particularly among members of Charlotte’s vibrant art community and the city’s dedicated philanthropists.

After all, Anne Neilson is the creator of the Angel Series, a nationally-known collection of oil paintings depicting colorful and rapturous angels.

Neilson created the series in 2013 after taking a break from her pottery business, Herring Designs, to spend more time with

her family. She has since expanded her series into a full line of products related to her angels, including coffee table books, journals, prints, Christmas cards, and candles. Simultaneously, she opened Anne Neilson Fine Art, which now inhabits a 5,200 square foot gallery space in Charlotte’s SouthPark area.

There, Neilson hosts emerging and established artists who use a variety of mediums and styles. In fact, the gallery has represented over 40 local, national, and international artists who

Neilson and her team members discover via extensive travel and research. Over the gallery’s lifespan, there has been something for every type of art aficionado, from photographs by Dean West, to figure work by Bonnie Goldberg, to paint and charcoal from Craig Hawkins, to ceramics from Tomoo Kitamura.

The breadth of styles exhibited is due in part to the incredibly competent and accomplished team backing Anne Neilson. Gallery director Cassandra Richardson, gallery coordinator Logan Sutton, corporate relations manager Leslie Culbertson, and graphic designer Jen Panaro work together to curate rotating exhibitions, direct programming, and provide seamless customer service. Each team member lends their own unique artistic tastes and experiences to the gallery, culminating in a diverse array of exhibits.

Anne Neilson Fine Art is driven as much by Neilson’s passion for art as her interest in people. In fact, at times she sees art and humans as uncannily similar: “We start as a blank canvas and as we go through trials and tribulations we add color and texture,” she says.

Anne Neilson is particularly interested in finding ways she can be of service to other people. Inspired by Ron Hall, a longtime friend of Neilson’s and author of the book Same Kind of Different as Me, Neilson was determined to use her gallery as a mechanism for giving back to her communities and aiding the Charlotte homeless population. Anne Neilson Fine Art regularly partners with nonprofits, donating a portion of art sales to support their mission.

Integral to both Hall and Neilson’s work is an ardent Christian faith.

Neilson credits her faith and her determination to surrender to her God with how she ended up on her current path of artistry and philanthropy. Like her angel paintings, which Neilson views as a reflection of her faith, her gallery is another expression of her religious convictions as they merge with color and light.

“What I like to say is that ANFA serves as a ‘lighthouse’ for our community and beyond by giving back through art,” says Neilson.

Drive down East Boulevard in the picturesque neighborhood of Dilworth, and you’ll be greeted by a bright yellow-andwhite sign belonging to Charlotte’s premier gift store, Paper Skyscraper.

The beloved neighborhood shop initially began as a tiny store selling architectural books 30 years ago, and has since grown into a 5000-square-foot spot offering a wide array of gifts. This independently owned Paper Skyscraper has a little bit of everything, from gag gifts to beautifully-designed cards and beach reads. The variety alone makes it obvious why Charlotteans

have been choosing Paper Skyscraper for three decades now.

In every part of the store, you’ll find a different, fun item that’ll catch your eye. The current owners of this fine establishment, Bill and Sybil Godwin, say that their favorite part of the shop is all the different people they get to meet each day.

The Godwins acquired the store in early 2019 from the original owners, Tim Hamilton and Ron Wooten.

“From Panthers players and people visiting Charlotte from abroad, to all of the wonderful Dilworth neighbors, we meet so many fun people who have a lot of fun in our store,” says Sybil.

Sybil Godwin has been an art purveyor for 15 years, and she also operates Shain Gallery in Myers Park. She explains that it’s partially through her art gallery experience that she has developed not only an eye for what sells at Paper Skyscraper but also one for talent.

“Bill and I thought long and hard about buying Paper Skyscraper,” Sybil shares. “In the end, we decided to do it because we love the store and we wanted to carry it on for another 30 years.”

According to Bill, it was always a dream to own and operate another Charlotte retail business and he and Sybil couldn’t be more happy that the establishment ended up being this neighborhood staple.

One of the things that drew them both in, according to Sybil, is the joyful simplicity of this brick-and-mortar: “[It’s] all of the fun, little finds that make you laugh. People are always laughing out loud in the store, which is contagious. I also personally love all of the fun books. I am a book fanatic, so when I go in, I am literally in book heaven.”

Jami says. “More than anything, it’s a feeling. If I feel great, then I look beautiful and go on to do amazing things.”

With such an indelible mark on the industry, Jami has taken her skill to an even bigger step: opening her own spa.

The decision came simply. Jami originally began working with a client for in-store Idolize campaigns. She also went on to help create beauty products for the brand. As she became more familiar with the brand itself, Jami ultimately decided she would open her own franchise.

As a makeup artist and where style is concerned, the source of her ideas is varied. From 90s music videos to old movies like Carmen Jones, Jami takes inspiration from a multitude of places.

“It’s crazy where my inspiration comes from,” she says. “[It’s] the most random things.”

The Culture // Beauty With the use of masks becoming more prevalent, Jami likes that beauty trends this year are shifting towards more natural looks. With the only part of the face being seen is the eyes while wearing a mask, Jami emphasizes making the most of an eye look through the use of eyeliner, mascara, and clean brows.

“The beauty industry is always changing; products, techniques, influencers,” Jami says. “You’ve got to keep up but I’ve stayed true to my classic style which is no tricks or hacks. Just great makeup.”

This philosophy blends into her signature style. It’s effortless looks that Jami favors most. “I just want to walk into my closet blindfolded and come out okay,” she says. While her go-to used to be lip gloss, with everyone wearing masks in 2020, Jami says it’s changed to eye cream.

In spite of the extensive repertoire of clients and her past successes, Jami says what she really cherishes most are the moments in her career that continue to enrich and inspire her.

Skin by Blair sits in a quaint, upscale building on the main street of East Boulevard. When you step inside the doors, you’re met with an atmosphere that is intentionally cozy, warm, clean, and inviting: exactly what you hope for when entering a med spa.

This, perhaps, shouldn’t be surprising from the owner of Dilworth neighborhood’s Skin by Blair boutique, who is just as intentional in all she does.

A Charlotte native, Blair Hayes passed her high school years at Providence Day. During this time, Hayes’ mother battled cancer, resulting in hours spent in doctors’ offices and hospitals and Hayes’ abiding interest in modern medicine.

She proceeded to enroll at North Carolina State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Nutrition Science degree.

Hayes then completed Wingate University’s Physician’s Assistant program before redirecting her professional energy to skincare.

The Magic of Expertise ­— At Skin by Blair, Hayes offers just one service. “Instead of being a jack of all trades, I prefer to be an expert at one thing and that, for me, is injections,” declares Hayes. She is indeed an expert, attending conferences regularly to participate in private training and educational sessions to ensure she is up to date on new technology.

Currently, Skin by Blair clients can receive Botox/Dysport, dermal filler, Aquagold, Kybella, vein treatment, and PRP facials.

Hayes specializes in a more natural looking aesthetic. “When some people think of Botox, they think of the Real Housewives... giant lips and frozen faces. They don’t think of celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, and Kate Middleton, but the truth is they get injections, too. There is a way to do injections where it looks completely natural and restores you to how you looked 10 years ago,” explains Hayes.

The Science of Skincare — In addition to injection services, Skin

by Blair also carries an array of skincare products that are appropriate for a variety of age ranges and skin types. “I am a strong believer in prevention. If you’re on the right skincare products in your 20s, it can prevent you from needing more invasive treatments such as ablative lasers or even surgery in your 50s,” says Hayes.

Skin by Blair’s shelves are populated by cleansers, moisturizers, and antioxidants from several different lines including Revision Skincare, Obagi, Elta, and Hayes’ own line. When selecting which products to carry, Hayes is swayed only by science.

The same applies to Hayes’ own product design. “I typically have a meeting at least once a week with the chemists and product

developers to make sure the products I’m putting out are exactly how I want them.

It could be years before the products I’m developing now are available to consumers,” says Hayes.

In Hayes’ experience, people not using adequate products is one of the most common mistakes she sees in the skincare industry. She is a strong proponent of medical-grade products, which typically have higher concentrations and more powerful results. “People will often pay the same price for much less effective products sold at stores such as Sephora or through multi-level marketing companies such as Rodan and Fields,” explains Hayes. “Once people make the switch to medical grade skincare products, they quickly see the difference in results.”

In mid-August, Jayson Whiteside and Michael Noll, the managing partner and chef/owner duo that brought Charlotteans bardo, opened a new restaurant in South End. The project was a long time coming for the business partners who knew, after opening bardo, that there was going to be another Charlotte restaurant in their future.

In Sanskrit, VANA translates to “wooded area of the forest.” It’s an apt name for a restaurant where food,

flame, and communion with the earthly elements take center stage. The dinner menu is divided into four primary sections, woods, sea, pasture, and farm, and all dishes effuse that signature flavor produced by cooking over a wood-burning fire.

“The wood fire is the single greatest characteristic of the food at VANA,” says Chef Noll. “While bardo is very technique forward and focused, VANA’s emphasis is on purchasing high quality ingredients and treating them simply.”

Those ingredients are largely sourced from local farmers and artisans. Chef Noll is dedicated to patronizing groups like Joyce Farms, Verdant Bread, and Lineberger Farm not only to promote growth in the local economy, but also to work with some of the freshest, tastiest products available.

Mixologist Amanda Britton has crafted a drink menu worthy of Chef Noll’s food menu.

If her name sounds familiar, it may be because she also masterminded the cocktails at bardo. However, VANA’s libations, like its food, have a slightly more playful character than bardo’s. Influenced by the open flames, Britton’s VANA drinks feature smoky flavors, like barrel aged whiskey and tequila, as well as Mezcal and scotch whiskey.

2020 has been a rough year for opening any restaurant, but VANA’s entry into the world came with its own set of unique challenges. “The most ambitious part of the build out was definitely deciding to build a kitchen that’s basically in the dining room,” concedes Whiteside. The location of the kitchen meant that it needed to be kept small, which translates to a small kitchen staff. Chef Noll was challenged to design menus that could be tackled by just four cooks at a time.

On November 12, Charlotte’s Wesley Heights neighborhood was struck by flash flooding and heavy rain from Tropical Storm Eta. In a matter of minutes, The Batch House, a popular Charlotte coffee shop and bakery, and neighboring LaCa Projects, were completely saturated with a couple feet of water. The flash flood devastated the small business and destroyed the insides of the cozy bakeshop.

Cristina Rojas-Agurcia, a Honduras native and self-taught baker, opened the Batch House in October of 2019. Prior to the store’s opening, Cristina had made a name for herself in the Charlotte community with her “Batchboxes,” the catering options she did from home that contained an array of homemade sweets. Her

Batchboxes were first come, first serve and consistently sold out.

In the days following the flash flood, the Charlotte community rallied to help Cris and the beloved bakery. Local businesses donated cleaning supplies, volunteered hands-on help, provided lunches, and even donated an industrial dumpster to collect the debris. On the Saturday after the flood,Enderly Coffee Company, a local coffee shop, donated half of its proceeds to the cleanup and rebuilding efforts.

In the meantime, Cris is baking from a commercial kitchen to fill as many orders as she and her team possibly can. They are also taking donations for their employees via the Venmo account, @thebatchhouseTEAM. For updates, check out @thebatchmaker.

Amanda Swaringen, founder and president of Carolina Design Associates, knows how to embrace a challenge.

Her Charlotte-based company transforms empty lots into gleaming homes and outdated houses into modern sanctuaries.

Overseeing new house construction, renovation, and redesign, the interior designers at CDA establish a bond with each client built on trust—trust that each space will become somewhere clients love to be.

Although Swaringen and her team usually work on projects in the Charlotte area, they will travel as far as needed to fulfill a client request, the furthest locale (so far) being Canada. Just as the team isn’t wedded to location, they aren’t wedded to style.

They not only can help achieve any style, but they relish in doing so: “The most fun part of our job is how varied it is from client to client,” explains Swaringen. “Charlotte is a fast growing city with a constant influx of different people coming to the area.

The Carolina Design Process — Step 1: Set up for success.

All of Carolina Design Associates projects begin with exploratory conversations. A talented team member from CDA sits down with the clients to discuss their expectations and their vision.

First, the designers discuss the client’s style, accounting for any inspiration photos from Pinterest or Instagram the client shares. Then it’s time to talk budget. “No one wants to talk about money,” concedes Swaringen, “but it’s best to address that up front, so we make sure the client gets what they want at a price that they understand and that is within their means.”

The central purpose of these conversations is to set expectations. Clients should know exactly what they can expect from their designers, just as designers learn precisely what clients need from them.

If the project is a construction or renovation project, CDA designers get involved before the client even breaks ground, then work alongside both the builder and the client every step of the way. They consider every detail that will need to be integrated into the architecture of the home, from the electrical plan to the layout. This early involvement translates to an ability to maximize the potential of every feature and create a truly coherent design.

When a client partners with CDA, they can expect the lead designer to aid in all selections throughout the construction process. Everything from appliances to plumbing, cabinetry, trimwork, countertops, and more can be entrusted to the keen design eye of a CDA team member.

Step 3: Transform the house to a home.

A well-designed interior requires space planning, or a careful consideration of how furniture pieces will compliment one another and compliment the room without over- or underwhelming the occupant.

This beautiful lanai is a joint effort between Sarah Catherine Collective Interior Design and Augusta Homes, a Charlotte luxury builder and renovator. The project, executed in March of 2020 at Narrow Passage in Davidson, NC, is characterized by three distinct areas and their flow was influenced by the graduating rise and fall of the sun.

According to designer Sarah Catherine Norkum, beginning at sunrise, you can lounge in plush seating overlooking the nature beyond, then enjoy a cocktail with friends at twilight resting at the bar top table with the soft flow of water stream-

ing in the background. Finally, she explains, you can follow the sun as it sets nestled in front of the fireplace to conclude the experience. That change in perspective maximizes the relationship of form and function.

The space is filled with warm hues, and the ceiling detail reflects the shape of a sun’s rays in abstract form. The space feels anchored and confident, yet gentle in its approach. The custom bar height table is Kauffman and Co., the mirror is Arteriors, the ceiling mobile is Regina Andrew, and the console is Gabby Home.

For over 20 years, Lucy and Company has completely transformed the interior design industry here in the Queen City. Founder Beth Keim has put her passion for interior design work into homes all over this area, and one of her newest projects perfectly exemplifies her dedication to beautifying our area. This Myers Park project showcases Beth’s bright, bold touch.

The design came into fruition after one of Beth’s favorite clients called and said they had purchased a new home. That

led to her overall goal of this space: to “repurpose pieces we had just recently purchased for their previous home in this new build in a [whole] new way.”

Beth and her team quickly got to work on this stunning new build from Charlotte residential designer Frank Smith. This home is a spacious five bed, six bath, perfect for the family of five. Beth described the overall home aesthetic as “casual chic with an eclectic mix.” To accomplish this, she brought in a neutral color palette with warm wood undertones.

The dining room features this in spades, with a custom-built table from Josh Utsey. The black and white patterned end chairs and the cabinets from Jacob Wolfe give the space an eclectic feel, without being overpowering. To tie the whole room together, Beth brought in Charlotte muralist Nick Napoletano. All of the other beautiful art in the home came from Charlotte's very own Shain Gallery. Another local Queen City craftsman, Tuan Le, built the metal shelf in the scullery. Altogether, these elements create the casual chic feel Beth set out, with a dose of total irreplicability.

The grand living room right off the kitchen is another of our favorite elements in this project. The large, charcoal colored sofas create a warm and inviting feeling, and at the center of the space sits the coffee table Beth pulled (and seamlessly integrated) from the client’s previous home.

The finishing touch in this room is the custom designed fireplace built by Walker Woodworking. It adds a bit of texture and interest, and speaks to the eclectic tones seen throughout the home.

While Beth and her team worked hard to make the inside spaces, “a bit whimsical but also a space to use daily and not just on special occasions,” the same holds true for the home's outdoor space. A gorgeous pool area was crafted by Waterscapes, and the clean lines and sharp design complements the home’s overall aesthetic.

Although the Biltmore Estate in Asheville is always a lovely weekend getaway, there is truly no better time to go than during the upcoming holiday season. The holiday spirit is alive and well at the Biltmore Estate every year, with especially festive decorations for the impressive house museum. George Vanderbilt opened his estate to family and friends on Christmas Eve in 1895, encouraging them to enjoy holiday leisure activities. In the same vein, a holiday weekend spent at the Biltmore in 2020 is sure to still be full of bright memories.

Christmas Activities The Biltmore also offers two distinct experiences during the holiday season: Christmas at Biltmore Daytime and Candlelight Christmas Evenings. Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, NC, which was originally named Salem. It was renamed “Winston” in 1849, after being sold to Forsyth County, so that the city could be the county seat. Starting as early as the 1880s, the US Post Office began calling the town Winston-Salem, and the name was officially adopted after a 1913 referendum. This historic district is home to a living history museum, which includes shops, hotels, and restaurants that reflect the culture of the early Moravians that settled the area.

Grab a bite — Muddy Creek Cafe & Music Hall No trip to Salem would be complete without a meal at the Muddy Creek Cafe & Music Hall. Muddy Creek offers grilled paninis, sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts for you to enjoy while listening to live folk musicians. They hold Open Mic Nights every Thursday with Country Dan Collins of the Winston Salem Journal, as well as a few annual shows put on by the town of Salem.

C. Winkler Bakery Visit the C. Winkler Bakery, established in 1807, to learn how to make all sorts of breads, cookies, and other treats. Every

Saturday, the costumed staff allows visitors to prepare the beehive oven, and bake the treats in a way consistent with the Moravian’s 18th century practices. This hands-on experience is appropriate for all ages, so the whole family can join in. If baking isn’t your speed, you can always visit just to purchase the treats — some fan favorites are the Moravian cookies and sugar cakes.

Brasstown Chocolates On the second floor of the Winkler Bakery, you can pay a visit to Brasstown Chocolates. Started in 2017, by chocolatiers Rom Still and Barbara Price, Brasstown added their historic Old Salem location in late 2019. They offer a variety of chocolate treats, as well as beverages like espresso and hot chocolate, from Tuesday-Saturday every week.

Where to Stay — Zevely Inn For accommodations, you can stay at the Zevely Inn, which is the only place to stay within the historic district of Old Salem Museums & Gardens. It’s been restored to its 19th century appearance, helping to transport you to a different time. The Inn was named after August T. Zevely, who was a saddler, doctor, and mayor of Salem, while he was alive from 1876 to 1872.

When it comes to preparation for holiday parties, we couldn’t think of anyone better to ask advice of than foodie and hosting expert Lindsay Anvik.

Lindsay and her partner (romantic and professional), Rob Henricks, started their catering/charcuterie board business Babe & Butcher on something of a lark. It wasn’t long, however, until the rapid rise of attention and demand for their boards forced the couple to shift their entire focus to the business.

One of Lindsay’s strong suits is an ability to combine artful, beautiful arrangements with delicious culinary flavors. From grazing tables to charcuterie, crudité, fruit and dessert boards, Lindsay knows how to wow better than nearly anyone.

It’s that time of the year, and you just got invited to a last minute holiday party. What do you bring, above all else?

Champagne. And if you’re Italian, like me, prosecco. Bubbles are celebratory and light. They pair well with most meals and desserts. They’re good during the cocktail hour, for dinner, or with dessert.

Let’s start simple: If you’re feeding people during this season, what are the best flavors to incorporate?

The holidays are a complete sensory experience. Making sure the boards look, smell, and taste like the holidays are always a goal. I like to make sure visually I’m tapping into the season, as well as making sure the flavors are a familiar nod to the holidays. Pomegranate, cranberry and cinnamon are three of my favorite flavors this time of year. And what’s beautiful about them is they’re delicious in everything from goat cheese to chocolate.

Okay, from there, how do we best combine foods and flavors well in a spread?

Salt, fat, and acid play with each other beautifully. Salt can bring out flavors and can make a powerful impact on the palette. Fat brings out flavor and texture. Acid helps balance out flavors. Cheese and meat can both be very fatty and salty.

Adding pickles (or something that has been pickled) helps cut the heaviness of the fat or the intensity of the salt. Citrus fruits can also add acid, which balances out a super creamy brie or salty cheddar.

If you're hosting, what are some easy ways to make sure everyone has bites? How do I know how much I need?

For a cocktail party, most people will sample at least once, if not more, from most of the trays. Plan enough so that most of the guests can have at least one to two bites off of each platter. Not everyone will have one bite from every tray, but this

accounts for some people having extra of one item or nothing from another. If you know you have a runaway hit for an appetizer, make extra of those. Most likely the star of the show will be gone first so you’ll want to make sure everyone gets to enjoy it.

What are some beverages that combine well with your snack boards?

Boards with intense flavors like blue cheese, savory goat cheese, or truffle salami tend to pair very well with a sauvignon blanc or a dry riesling. When the cheese or meat flavors are intense, they play well with a lighter wine or a wine more on the dry side. If your boards are more sweet or savory, you may consider a wine that compliments the sweetness or balances the savory flavors. For example, a board with figs, grapes and balsamic goat cheese pairs beautifully with a rosé or a viognier. The sweetness of the grapes work beautifully

with a rosé or a more aromatic wine like a viognier. This same sweetness balances out a savory cheese.

What are a few styling tips for making platings look pretty... that even us styling-challenged people can achieve?

Take the flavors of the season and incorporate them into your boards. If it’s fall, use apples and baby pumpkins. If it’s winter, use cranberries or cinnamon. If it’s spring or summer, add citrus to liven up plates. Color is crucial in plating, whether it’s a dish or a charcuterie board. You want to make sure you have pops of color to take your eye around the plate, or in our case, the board.
