Anne Harkness has loved the process of creating artwork since she was a child. Through the experience of being surrounded by family members with an artistic influence, Anne was encouraged to draw and paint through school. Following their advice and her own talent, she attended the Atlanta College of Art and The Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. Through many years of trial, error, and realizing which techniques are the most fulfilling and rewarding, Harkness has found her home in oil painting. It was only six years ago when this award-winning artist transitioned from other practices such as crayons, pencils, watercolor, and photography to the medium she truly loves.
32 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
In 2014, Anne began to study this new medium under fellow oil painter and North Carolina native Curt Butler. Unsure if she could be successful with oil paints, she received glowing words of praise from her mentor. “You have what it takes to become an artist,” Butler said. His affirmation was the push she needed to pursue a full time career as an artist. For her paintings and projects, Anne draws inspiration from life. “I felt I had permission to love life and embrace the parts of it that made me dance and sing. For me, that was, and is, painting,” she said. “Friends and family insisted I keep going for it when they saw how happy painting made me.” She is also inspired by teaching. She loves to share insights, elements, and principles of painting with eager students at her

professional studio. “Many have given to me–giving to others is a way of passing it forward.” According to Harkness, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching and painting is seeing young artists begin to understand techniques and excitedly bring their creative ideas to life on canvas. Anne loosely describes her own style and artistic aesthetic as “contemporary realism with a spin of line, design, and abstraction.” Though her practice and mediums have changed since college, elements of graphic design still have their moments in her oil paintings. When looking at any of her canvases, you can see a geometric foundation that has been overlaid with vibrant colors and intentional, softer strokes. After staying inside lines for so long–a theme in her artistic journey and in her life– Harkness says she finally learned to use the lines to her favor. “I began by using lines to outline a subject, like in a coloring book. Now I break lines and rules, and try to contain a recognizable portion of the subject but leave the lines that I used to draw the subject, which abstracts it.” One of her many works that captures this abstract aesthetic is the award-winning piece titled “A Capella.” In 2019, Harkness received the Fine Art Connoisseur Award of Excellence at the Looking West: An Exhibition Highlighting Works by American Women Artists in the Steamboat Art Museum in Colorado.

Jenny Crane McHugh recently launched her handcrafted jewelry line full of bright, whimsical pieces that feel extra personal to Charlotteans. The line is broken down into four collections that represent different facets of McHugh herself, and she has dubbed the business one that is replete with: “serious jewels for those who don’t take themselves too seriously.” Marked with bright colors and a bit of spunk, Campbell + Charlotte offers necklaces, rings, and more in a fun, unpre-

The electronic storefront is bursting with unique gemstones and glittering diamonds, all hand-selected by Campbell + Charlotte owner Jenny Crane McHugh for her one-of-a-kind pieces. “We love the idea of our clients unapologetically knowing what they want and going out there to get it,” Jenny says. “I envision strong women and men who love color, love to laugh, and love a little bling.”

CULTURE too seriously. All of these traits are present in the brand and our designs. Our Juju ROAR charm necklace was directly inspired by Campbell. When she started learning animals and animal sounds, a lion’s roar was her favorite. She would run around the house “roaring,” and we couldn’t get enough of it. I wanted to remember that special time with the ROAR pendant. And then Charlotte, NC is where the initial collection was born. Hence, the name.
Can you tell us about how your daughter (and her name) inspired your business and vision? The namesake is deeply meaningful to me. Campbell is my first child and daughter's name who, in many ways, was the push I needed to leave the corporate world and take a chance on my dreams. It is magical and crazy what a mama instinct can do to you. I immediately knew I wanted to make my daughter proud and show her that hard is not impossible. In terms of the vision for the brand, Campbell continues to grow into a headstrong, independent little lady who doesn’t take herself
What is your inspiration behind the whimsical, fun designs? The classic designs? The whimsical, fun designs are truly a reflection of what I think has been bouncing around in my head since I was a kid—just fun, happy things that make us smile. On the classic designs, my approach was to take something that felt pretty classic and add an unexpected design detail that would delight our clients when they discovered it. What intangible things, beyond the jewelry, do you hope to bring to your clients? Above all, hands down, we want our clients to feel like fine jewelry is approachable and that their experience with Campbell + Charlotte made them feel happy. Jewelry is such a personal and special purchase, and I don’t take for granted that I get to play a small role in so many awesome life events for our

CULTURE clients. When we have the pleasure of making an engagement ring, wedding band, or a pair of earrings to commemorate a special landmark in time, we know our clients will think of that special day every time they wear those earrings. So, I guess in terms of intangibles, I hope both our clients’ experience with us, and the resulting jewelry piece help enhance a memory that will (hopefully) last a lifetime. That is pretty lofty but we choose to think big around here. Did you always want to own your own business? I don’t know if I would say I have always dreamed of owning my own business, but I have always dreamed of designing my own jewelry line. I never in a million years thought it would actually happen. One of my parents' favorite memories involves the nightly war I waged as a two year old in refusing to remove the dozens of plastic bracelets, necklaces and earrings I wore each day. Then, each morning, every piece had to be put back on before the day could start. I love this memory so much because, in a time when launching a new luxury collection can be somewhat crazy, it gives me comfort that I am actually landing in the right place and following a lifelong dream. What is your own favorite accessory? What's a piece of jewelry you wear again and again? I attach jewelry strongly to memories, so I have so many pieces that remind me of special times. Obviously my engagement ring and wedding bands are sentimental, and my husband bought me a pair of simple but stunning diamond earrings when my daughter was born that I wear all the time. My husband, Mike, and I have a tradition that each year on our anniversary, he gets me a special piece of jewelry and we engrave the anniversary year somewhere on the piece.

How do you recommend women incorporate bolder pieces into an outfit? Oh my goodness, I love this question! Here are a few thoughts/questions I often have related to this: You don’t need a bold outfit to wear bold jewelry. Color is your friend. Don’t be afraid to pair two (or more) bright colors together. If she can wear it, you can wear it. If you see someone else layering up five necklaces, rocking some killer earrings, or stacking up their wrists and you like it, then you should do it, too.
We truly appreciate you!

Can you tell us an example of how some of your pieces are made? Everything starts with the design. Generally, that involves me working on a sketch through a number of iterations or seeing a gemstone I love that immediately brings the design into crystal clear focus. I am sketching all the time—on napkins, receipts and in my sketchbook. I have to capture them immediately so I don’t forget! Once I have perfected the design, I have an amazing production crew that I work with up in New York City where all of my pieces are made. These are true artisans who have been in the jewelry industry for years. How can customers get their hands on these products—online, storefront, or both? For now, online! Experience Jerald Melberg Gallery, one of Charlotte's favorite art destinations. words JULIA FUNDERBURK
The Jerald Melberg Gallery made its debut in Charlotte in 1983 when a young art connoisseur took note of a city with potential to become a frontrunner with an untapped art scene. Since then, the gallery, named after founder Jerald Melberg, has hosted numerous collections and works from artists all around the United States and Europe. These carefully selected artists exhibit collections of poetic demonstrations, regardless of style, that breathe different life into the spaces of the gallery, and into the city.

Finding a great hair salon has always been about more than just finding a place that does good hair—though that’s of course important. It’s about finding a place that makes every client feel special in a way that transcends their outward looks. People go to hair salons to bring out the best in their own personal versions of their self-perceptions—to feel beautiful outside and in. The stylists at Kenna Kunijo understand this completely, and it’s part of the reason why their stylish, high-end, boutique South End salon has grown so popular. Located on the main stretch of historic Camden Road, Kenna Kunijo is a buzzing, art-filled space with a host of expert stylists.

Owners and master stylists Kenna Ehman and Lauren Kunijo built their salon on a foundation of empowerment and individualism. They strive to bridge the gap between a client’s inward beauty and their image goals. To do so, they’ve worked hard to cultivate a space where their stylists can thrive. “Our goal for the salon is to always have a drama-free environment,” says Kunijo. “This allows us to create art while giving room for all of our stylists to flourish and grow in their craft.” Growth has been on the minds of Ehman and Kunijo ever since they first opened their doors—and they’ve been successful at prioritizing it. Kenna Kunijo currently has a thriving team of stylists and assistants.

As a team dedicated to education, the co-owners invest an extensive amount of time not just keeping their stylists up to date on techniques and trends, but also on training themselves. “We’ve been in the industry eleven years already,” notes Kunijo about her and Ehman’s experience. “But honestly, we never stop training or learning.” That ambition to keep pushing forward and do right by their clients is what ultimately drove them together, and it’s why their business offers a wide range of services. The Best at Natural Stone. The Best at Porcelain.
Porcelain is the hot new trend for countertops but, due to the challenges it brings, few fabricators are willing to work with it. We looked at its arrival on the scene differently. Three years ago, we flew to Italy, where the product is made, to learn from the best fabricators in the world. We are Charlotte’s experts for porcelain countertops, fireplaces, and shower surrounds.

chic interior. Each black tabletop is adorned with a salt candle. To compliment the cheerful atmosphere, the restaurant features unique artwork, curated by Chef Burke, and a large salt wall. The restaurant offers a seasonal menu which features cuts of steak using Burke’s patented Himalayan sea-salt dry-aging technique. Homemade bread and an award-winning pastry program are fan favorites. On the menu is an array of Burke’s signature dishes featuring “unique southern flair." Start off with a mouth-watering appetizer such as the lobster dumplings, black pepper maple glazed bacon, or salt brick seared wagyu beef. For your entree, choose from the savory salt-aged beef, or opt for a seafood dish like the lobster cioppino or ginger salmon. Goers can pair their meal

One of Fine & Fettle's signature staples is their delicious pork cheeks. This ingredient isn't often used by the average restaurant, but that’s not due to their lack of flavor. Fine & Fettle serves this tender meat alongside crisp edamame, an earthy carrot puree, and a squid ink sesame cracker. The puree balances out the richness of the meat, while the sesame cracker adds a nice texture for each bite. Fine & Fettle’s menu might keep changing, but they’re sure to keep this favorite around for a while. info fineandfettle.com @fineandfettlecharlotte

Visiting Vana is a unique experience. The upscale restaurant takes pride in its rustic appeal and concentration on incorporating wood elements throughout both the food and beverage program and the interior design. Patrons are treated to delicious family-style dishes no matter what time they stop by, including for brunch. Their popular Beet Cured Salmon is proof of that. The brightness of the beets works well with the pickled red onions and bitter greens served alongside. Topping it all off is a soft boiled egg, the runny yolk adding a smooth savoriness to the capers. Pair this favorite with one of their classics off the cocktail menu, and you’ll experience a brunch that’s one to remember. — info — vanarestaurant.com / @vanasouthend

Creating a dining room that’s both elegant enough for special occasions and comfortable enough for entertaining isn’t an easy feat. Fortunately, Beth Keim knows a thing or two about designing a balanced space. As the owner and principal designer of Lucy and Company, Keim takes pride in balancing looks and functionality within a project. That balance is also clear in this dining room, photographed
by Mekenzie Loli. While the clients wanted a modern space, they didn’t want it to feel unwelcoming. Keim’s use of the white walls and rug gives the space a classic chic feel while also making it brighter. Paired with the dark wood floors, the whole area feels more inviting. The artistic accents, like the painting and the custom chandelier, tie everything together and act as focal pieces in the room.

Those skills are seen clearly in this highly customized master suite bathroom and closet. The client wanted to completely restructure the layout of the room to ensure that there was plenty of room for separate vanities, a large soaking tub, and a large shower. Because
their last bathroom felt dark, they wanted to make sure this one was bright and inviting. The muted colors on the walllength vanities help to frame the stunning patterned floor, while the blue wallpaper pulls the eye toward the far wall where the two windows shed natural light onto the tub. With the intricate patterns and light colors, Pheasant Hill Designs created a master suite that feels both updated and timeless.

Layton Campbell of JLayton Interiors is a native Charlottean: His clients, fellow Charlotte residents, desire unique spaces that are personal to their diverse tastes and needs and meant to keep up with the times. Layton is perfectly primed to deliver just that. This cozy living room is a layered space, with tons of texture and interest to pair alongside the clean white walls and dark trim. At every turn, there is “something tactile,” Layton explains, from the woven sweater rug to the custom wrought iron mirrors, fabrics with fringe
and tribal style embroidery. The young couple who own the home—built by Kingswood Custom Homes with hard line design by Louise Leeke—wanted a comfortable space they could live in daily, but they also sought a more sophisticated style when it came time to entertain. The custom wrought iron mirrors are by Jim Watts, Kelly Wearstler fabric is on the pillows, Theodore Alexander did the leather strap cocktail table, and the custom sectional and swivel chairs are Ambella Home.

Karen Kettler, of Karen Kettler Design, and Ali McPhail of Ali McPhail Interior Design collaborated to pull off a timeless, beautiful bedroom/bathroom project in Foxcroft. Their work was completed in October 2020. When it came to the bathroom, the client's initial goal was to update the space; plus, it had a leaky malfunctioning shower and needed updating to fit their storage needs “It’s always fun working with Karen,” McPhail says. “She has a great sense of function in addition to beautiful cabinetry. Oftentimes, I can express the client’s vision to her and we then collaborate to add the right products and details to make that vision come to life. We have partnered often enough to know that we share an appreciation for spaces that will per-
form under daily use, but that also reflect attention to design details that make the spaces beautiful.” Unique tile details, wall finishes, and lighting were all part of the initial vision. The cabinetry, counters, plumbing fixtures and hardware made the client’s vision of her dream bath come true. Ultimately, the bathroom has better functionality and a more efficient layout alongside a unique, classic style with little details like the elegant antique mirror. Some of the vendors used here include Majestic Bath, Crossville Tile, Marble and Stone Shop, Walker Zanger, The Shade Store, and Carolina Wallcovering. This Sedgefield home, a craftsman style, got a big dose of character and global-modern vibes from the House of Nomad team. Kelley and Berkeley explain that the clients, a growing young family with a baby on the way, wanted their home to be inviting, cheerful, and functional. The dining room features neutral colors accented with a dramatic pop from the chandelier, timeless, functional choices with the chair and table, and a colorful but classic rug.
The sisal rug is from Stark and the lighting, framed textiles, and dining chairs and accessories all came straight from the House of Nomad Shop. House of Nomad also refreshed many other spaces in the home, including the bedroom, living area, and bathroom. “We were able to design several pieces of furniture and lighting for this project while we were in Bali and in Morocco,” Kelley and Berkeley share. “It was such an exciting project being able to bring it to life with things from our travels and our own designs!”

Not all rooms have such an abundance of natural light flowing into them—and for those that do, few use it to their full potential. Patrick Lewis, owner of Patrick Lewis Interiors, wanted this living room to be different. Because the clients preferred a light, minimalist design, Lewis worked with the five columns of floor-toceiling windows to create a serene space. By using nearly translucent window coverings, Lewis maximized the amount of
light entering the room. The white walls and light-colored furniture amplified the natural light, while the pops of blue gave the whole area an airy feel. Lewis worked with stylist Eleanor Roper and several local vendors, including Bourgeois McGinn Builders and Stark Carpet, to create this tranquil room. The upholstery was provided by Lee Industries and the table is Robert James Collection.

A good designer can blend the client’s wants and needs into a space that’s as beautiful as it is functional. A great designer, however, knows how to take things a step further and show off their client’s personality at the same time. That’s exactly what Kelly Cruz of Kelly Cruz Interiors did in her client’s new dining room, completed in Lake Norman, NC last year. She knew the client wanted a spacious, casual family dining area to gather for dining as well as lots of card games and family fun. She created a bright, open space, leaving the towering arch window bare to flood the room with natural light all day. The unique, star-like chandelier draws the eye before allowing the
focus to go down to the soft oranges in the chairs and the painting. “This space is eclectic in style with a good blend of modern elements and a nod to nature in the natural wood tabletop and chandelier,” Kelly explains. “The client’s whimsical art keeps the room fun and approachable.” Because the white walls and gray carpet allowed Cruz to create those focal points, she perfectly exemplified her client’s flair without cluttering the space. The acrylic chairs were a special request by the client, the chandelier is Dragonfly by Troy Lighting and the tabletop was custom made from a North Carolina tree slab by Mitchelcraft.

Steal away for a romantic weekend in one of South Carolina’s best and most-featured hotels. Inspired by the Roaring Twenties, bustling bars in the age of Prohibition, and classic luxury, The Spectator Hotel is Charleston’s grand escape into comfort, splendor, and a little sprinkle of the past. The relatively new boutique hotel opened its doors in 2015 at the intersection of the City Market and the French Quarter, and has enjoyed rave reviews ever since. It remains a small and intimate paradise even with a location steps away from downtown’s busy outdoor shopping center, full of work by local artists, vendors, and craftsmen.

COASTA L CH A R M Sullivan’s Island combines the very best of the Charleston area, making it the perfect choice for your next vacation. words L AURYNN HARKINS
If you’re looking for a friendly, laid back travel destination, look no further than Sullivan’s Island. Ten miles away from the heart of Charleston, and neighboring the beautiful Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island offers visitors the best of both worlds. Visitors can take in the rich history of the Charleston area and enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation all without ever leaving the island. This charming, character-laden coastal oasis is still deeply rooted in its past. Take for example Sullivan Island’s most striking feature: its lighthouse. Known today by locals as the Charleston Light, this lighthouse helped welcome faraway travelers to the

area throughout the 17th century. Take a stroll down Sullivan Island’s middle street and you will find Poe’s Tavern. Named after the famous English poet Edgar Allen Poe, it pays a tribute to the time Poe spent on Sullivan’s Island and the influence it had on his work, The Gold Bug. If you’re still looking for more ways to explore the area’s history, head to Fort Moultrie. It’s been fully restored to resemble the iconic role it placed in the Revolutionary War. Visitors today have the privilege of examining Fort Moultrie up close and learning more about its abundant history in the museum on-site.

Shannon Bowman teams up with an impressive group of builders, architects, and landscape designers to create an unforgettable family home. words SUNNY HUBLER / photos DUSTIN HALLECK
S.B. Interiors offers full turnkey design service for construction and decorating. This can include the full comprehensive planning phase, construction selections, custom furniture selections and finishes, window treatments, rugs, artwork, and accessories. When helping with a new construction home, they work closely with the homeowner and the architect in order to see the whole vision and plan for the overall design. The architecture of the home is one of Bowman’s biggest points of inspiration: She has perfected blend-
ing the client’s tastes and style with the architecture to create the perfect design. This project was a new home; the homeowners tore down their dated home on this property, purchased the lot next door, and built three structures to create one big home, at 10,000 square feet, that their large family could enjoy as a vacation retreat. The builder was Dave Knecht Homes, LLC, the architect was Michael Abraham Architecture, and the kitchen designer was Doug Durbin of nuHaus.

As Shannon describes it, the style leans toward a transitional Napa-inspired cottage with both traditional and modern elements trickled throughout. There are three structures all connected by walkways to the main house; two coach houses sit at the top of the property and one large main house by the lake—not to mention a grown up treehouse. The homeowners are always on the go, and have a very active family that includes six kids. The driving goal was to create a cozy environment for the family to relax and soak up lake life. The homeowners wanted each space to accommodate everyone in their family so they could maximize family time and enjoy being together. With this goal in mind, Shannon designed a custom banquette with three movable tables on casters and architect Michael Abraham designed the home with large scale windows that capture views from every angle. “We really focused on letting the lake and landscape outside be the driving force in design,” Shannon explained. “So, naturally, keeping a soft and neutral palette for the interiors seemed to be the perfect fit.” To achieve that palette, the team used Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace white walls and then added layers of taupe and gray heavy linens paired with white leathers for durability. In addition, Shannon used natural wood tones along with deeper wood accents to introduce the natural elements back into the

furnishings and pick up on the exposed oak beams throughout the home. Large spaces can feel too open or cold, but this home is all about feeling inviting and cozy. “For the master bedroom, we felt the calming blue, gray, and white color palette would create the perfect escape for the owners. The calming colors not only feel so serene and luxurious, but also tied into the limestone colors on the fireplace.” The outdoor area is also central to the home: white and gray boulders create pathways and the layers of grasses and greenery soften the edges. The result is a casual yet lush feel that’s visible from the kitchen, hallways, and two coach houses. The outdoor screened porch features a custom, hanging daybed and the outdoor sectional allows for views of the lake but also views of the tv and fireplace. The majority of the custom furniture was designed and sourced through Stanford Furniture, the outdoor sectional is Lee Industries, and Abner Henry did a majority of the custom casegoods throughout the home, as well as the hanging daybed on the porch. Reaching Quiet made the custom concrete top for the console table that sits behind the sofa in the living room. Rugs were sourced through the Stark showroom and High Point Furniture Market. info sbinteriors.co / @sbinteriors_

A Cotswold remodel by Amy Vermillion Interiors. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos BRIE WILLIAMS
Minutes from Uptown while still preserving a suburban environment, Cotswold is one of Charlotte’s most popular neighborhoods. You’ll find it near Myers Park and Providence Park; it’s an established area with high-end homes and desirable dining and shopping. In this coveted neighborhood, Amy Vermillion of Amy Vermillion Interiors recently executed a beautiful remodel on behalf of a Charlotte client.

A Book Lover’s Dream — The client for this remodel is an avid reader. She owns shelves and shelves of books, and she regularly hosts book club gatherings. To embrace this passion in her living space, the client worked with Amy to transform a rarely used living room into a library. They set to work designing a room that could offer as much book storage as possible in an elegant setting. Amy partnered with a trusted cabinetmaker to design floor to ceiling built-in shelves that would be both functional and beautiful. Everything—from the wallcovering to the drapes to the furniture—embraces a color palette of navy, gray, gold, and creamy white. Cozy perches like the velvet sofa and cut velvet epingle chairs provide ample options of places to curl up with a good read. Custom benches upholstered in white hair on hide leather are interest pieces that can also be used for book club seating. “Our client tells us how much she loves hosting book club meetings, as well as reading in this amazing space,” says Amy.
Feminine and Functional Home Office — In the era of COVID, who hasn’t taken a moment to spruce up their home office? For this client, the home office became a place that exudes both an aura of calm and a promise of productivity. The client shares the room with her son, who uses the table to complete his homework and work with his tutor. The client uses the desk regularly and, between the credenza and filing drawers, has ample space to keep work and home documents organized. A soft tan wallcovering joins forces with a creamy, patterned, wool carpet to produce a calming effect. Cheery pops of coral in the chairs adjoining the table and the tub chair add some femininity and levity to the space. “Our client tells us she really does use all the elements in here so it makes me happy to know that as pretty as it is, it’s also very practical,” says Amy.

Sweet Dreams of Cabinet Seams — Amy Vermillion has been designing interiors for decades. Yet, this house has one of her all-time-favorite built in pieces. Amy and the client had discussed the need for storage along the wall opposite the foot of the bed. However, the team was struggling to find a storage solution that would accommodate the client’s needs without jutting out too far into the limited space between the wall and the bed. The solution? Recessing part of the cabinet into the wall cavity. From the side, the cabinet seems shallow and leaves plenty of space where it’s needed most. However, it still offers the client considerable depth for her storage needs. There are adjustable shelves behind the doors and a television rests in the center piece. “A cabinetmaker that I hadn’t met called me to say he has had several clients ask him to duplicate this idea,” says Amy. “I’m glad people like it as much as my client and I do!” info amyvermillion.com @amyvermillioninteriors

S OPH I ST ICAT E D E L E G A NC E Stunning interior design by Carolina Design Associates in this Gerrard Builders home. words SUNNY HUBLER / photos DUSTIN PECK
T
This stunning new construction custom build comes as a joint effort between several Charlotte heavy-hitters: Gerrard Builders, Frank Smith Residential Design, and Carolina Design Associates. The house has five full baths, two half baths, and five bedrooms, plus a basement kitchen/bar entertainment room, a hidden cigar room, and an outdoor kitchen with a living and dining space and an exercise pavilion with outdoor shower. Anna Brantley, the interior designer who led the project, filled us in on all the details. The “Belgian modern” aesthetic is what inspired the architecture of the home, so the interior was designed to incorporate that while also balancing an “English transitional” style and feel. The open concept home is sophisticated, comfortable, and warm.

THE EXCLUSIVES
The clients—a family who likes to entertain—wanted to stretch the normal transitional interior by incorporating modern aesthetics such as plaster walls, slab showers, waterfall sink vanity wall, high end furnishings and material selections that make the bones of the home truly stand out and shine, while still evoking a comfortable, clean, and livable feel. “The client also wanted to create an open concept to allow the outside to feel a part of the interior house,” Brantley explains.
120 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
Residential Designer Frank Smith included large windows along the back of the home, and Brantley worked to tie together the pool and outdoor living space so both could feel like a part of the inside. The plaster on the walls in the main living areas of the house were used to create a subtle type of texture on the walls and allow for smooth corners with a clean finish. The warm, neutral, gray tones throughout the house are accented here with pops of color in the artwork, pillows and rugs.
THE EXCLUSIVES
“We kept the fabrics textured and soft, but didn’t use a lot of pattern for a classic, timeless look,” Brantley explains. “We used prefinished European white oak hardwoods throughout the house to give a casual feel and lighten the floor color.” Other standouts of the home include the laundry room, with an area custom built to accommodate the beloved family dog. The striking butlery was designed with a navy and brass color scheme to complement the adjacent powder room featuring an integrated apron front sink vanity, all of which was created from porcelain slabs. Finally, the outdoor area of the home completes the entire design overhaul: With the living and dining area and pool, it became another large living space for the clients to use and an

A N U R BA N R ET R E AT The Chantilly neighborhood welcomes a stunning addition executed perfectly by Habitude Interiors, Mermans Architecture & Design, and Royal Building Group.
N words ELEANOR MERRELL photos ERIN COMERFORD
Nestled between Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood, Chantilly is one of the most desirable places to live in Charlotte. Its wide streets are lined with old oaks and they’re consistently quiet, despite the presence of shopping and dining mere minutes away. The charming neighborhood has become a magnet for young, affluent Charlotteans who have partnered with builders to introduce larger, more beautiful homes to the neighborhood.
THE EXCLUSIVES
Royal Building Group has already built a number of homes in Chantilly. Most recently, they partnered with architect Bryan Mermans to realize the vision of a bachelor, new to Charlotte, who wanted to create an urban retreat where he could host his family in fashion and comfort. The interior design, with its flairs of mid-century modern, was masterminded by Jennifer Felts, owner of Charlotte’s Habitude Interiors. Habitude Interiors is a full-service interior design studio that partners with clients on new construction, full or partial renovations and interiors, working from concept to completion. Their approach to each space is holistic, to ensure the finished product is cohesive and intentional. Jennifer Felts launched Habitude Interiors after years of practicing fast-paced and high-demand
corporate tax law in major cities across the U.S. According to her, in making the change “she re-designed her life.” This new construction home by Royal Building Group is 3,700 square feet and includes four bedrooms, four full baths, an office/guest suite downstairs, and a rec room upstairs. The interior is all clean lines and natural light. It’s largely minimalist but with subtle high end finishes that add a dash of pizzazz and character. For example, elegant backsplashes and sophisticated countertops elevate the kitchen, while statement lighting throughout the home gives character to hallways and bathrooms. Notably, all of the cabinets— throughout the kitchen and scullery, as well as the bathrooms—were custom designed and built to the homeowner’s exact specifications.
127 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
THE EXCLUSIVES
As enticing as the interior may be, the primary goal for this custom new construction was to expand the living space into the outdoors and take full advantage of Charlotte’s temperate weather. To that effect, sliding glass doors comprise the wall between the downstairs sitting room and the outdoor patio. Upstairs, french doors invite visitors onto a second-story patio overlooking the backyard. The home has two patio spaces, both of which are sheltered by roofs and provide ample seating and gathering space. The back patio can offer comfort year-round via the presence of ceiling heaters and a cozy brick fireplace. The exterior of the home reflects Mermans’ unique style and defies classification. Elements of an English cottage are present in the steeply pitched roof, while tall windows and asymmetry hint at trends of modern architecture. The second story cantilevers out over the driveway to create a covered side entry and car parking. Concrete-like parged brick grounds the base of the home and provides a visual balance against the rest of the exterior’s painted brick and siding.
128 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
Although Chantilly has many charms, the neighborhood’s lot sizes are compact. This presented a challenge for Bryan Mermans and Royal Building Group, who were forced to find creative solutions to incorporate the client’s competing priorities into the same limited tract of land. They desired a spacious home, but also wanted sufficient outdoor living space; he valued a yard, but also desired a garage. The result is an extraordinarily intentional design, from the ground-up build to the purposefully designed interior; every square foot was accounted for and every ounce of creativity applied. Each component of this living space works harmoniously together to create a Chantilly home uniquely adapted to its owner. info habitudeinteriors.com / @habitudeinteriors royalbldgroup.com / @royalbuildinggroup @mermansarchitectureanddesign
