NOTE
No. 75 This Travel Issue is a little different. In the past, we've highlighted amazing destinations from secret beaches near Charleston to dreamy waterfalls in the Blue Ridge. We've shared our top picks for hotels and unique AirBNBs, and we always write about the adventures you have got to go on. In those issues, we dedicated most of our pages to the promotion of those places. Recently however, we have been dedicating a lot of our website (qcexclusive. com) as well as our social media channels to the topic of travel. In fact, we recently (just last summer) launched our very own Tik Tok account dedicated to exploring our region. It's called Discover The Carolinas and it picked up a lot of steam surpisingly fast, gaining nearly 70,000 followers in a matter of months. So, we started a matching Instagram account too (@ discoverthecarolinas) that has also been received well. There you can find guides to all of our favorite places in North and South Carolina. Because we now cover travel daily on our website and new social media accounts, we figured we could do something a little different in this issue. During the process of starting and growing these travel accounts, we have "met" (messaged, emailed, been introduced on the trail, etc.) some of the most talented travel photographers in the Carolinas. They take some of the most amazing images of our states and their talents really do shine. In this issue we thought we would dedicate the pages to the people documenting the beauty of our area. In our Exclusives section you'll find some impressive photography from both well known and hidden locations all over NC and SC. You'll also get to meet the highly skilled and creative people behind the lens as they share these favorite locales with all of us. We hope you enjoy and you'll find more travel guides in our upcoming summer issue. Cheers and get out there to discover!

Nelia Verano’s skirt brushes the ground as she walks. It is patterned and flowing, complimenting her black blouse, white high heels, statement necklace, and eye-catching ring. Verano is a woman who knows style and art intimately. “I developed a passion for exposing people to artists and artwork,” Verano said. “There is so much joy in watching people connect with art on an emotional level and have that ‘awe’ moment.” Though Verano grew up in the Midwest, she has called Charlotte her home since 2003. This is where she built a strong foundation in her work with LaCa Projects and The Mint Museum, and, now most recently, where her art advisory firm was born. An art advisor serves as a market specialist who can provide advice to inform clients' decisions in the

buying and selling of art. For clients selling works, Neely is able to advise where, when and how to sell. Verano said she has watched as Charlotte’s art and culture scene has grown and thrived: She has seen a strong desire emerge in Charlotte to engage with art in a meaningful and educated way. She knew she had to be a part of the movement through art advisory. “I wanted to be a part of that,” Verano said. “ [And to] give people the joyful experience that I have had collecting art.” Charlotte’s art collectors have not disappointed: According to Verano, Charlotte has some of the most amazing and cutting-edge collectors. “I’ve learned way more from them [Charlotte collectors] than they ever have from me,” Verano said. “Seeing their

vision for art in their homes come alive is awe-inspiring.” Verano’s services don’t stop at home collections. Her offerings extend from working with private galleries to researching artists to styling services. Despite their variety, all of her services share one aspect: Creating a meaningful connection between collectors and artists. “Artist-collector relationships are critical,” Verano said. “Collectors essentially become advocates and voices for the artists. And that’s what artists need.” For Neely, forming connections is at the core of her work and personal life. She credits any level of success she has achieved to these connections and offers them when working with her clients. “I want to bring that [connection] to people’s lives,” Verano said. “And develop relationships that are meaningful and lifelong—not transactional.” Neely has also made learning into a lifelong process. She has immersed herself in art experiences of all kinds, from Transeúnte deconstruyendo attending art fairs and museums to su vértigo, Carlos Estévez, Oil, tempera, and watercolor pencil learning from reading and writing on canvas, 2017 (photo credit: catalogs, and even doing non-profit Carlos Estévez) fundraising.
“There is so much joy in watching people connect with art on an emotional level and have that ‘awe’ moment.” “I’m still learning every day,” Verano said. “That’s what is perhaps the most rewarding about a career in the arts—you never ‘arrive’ and you’ll never know everything there is to know, but it sure is fun trying.” Verano said there is also value in unlearning, particularly collectors unlearning misconceptions about the art world. She believes many myths exist in the realm of art collection including that a good collection must be made of expensive and well-known artists. “That could not be further from the truth,” Verano said. “Some of the best collections I’ve seen are comprised primarily of emerging and outsider artists, and we have some truly innovative collectors in Charlotte for that reason.” Verano, with her own unique art and style, is bringing a new dimension to Charlotte’s art world. Whether you’re a working artist, or you would like an art expert to bring sophistication to your space in any form, from a canvas to a coffee table, she is ready and eager to help.

T H E F R EEDOM OF CA N VAS Artist and designer Jax Jackson brings us with him on his journey of creativity, truth, and self-expression. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO
For most artists, their love of art first blossoms from childhoods spent pressing crayons to paper, or from formative years spent in and around the art world. Jax Jackson is not like most artists. Unlike many of his peers, he didn’t discover his artistic side until adulthood, when he found himself striving for a way to express himself and regain control of some parts of his life.

photos JAMEY PRICE
Now the owner and curator of Jax Abstracts and Acrylix & Kanvas, Jackson has become an accomplished abstract artist in Charlotte and beyond. He even dedicates his time to the community by helping individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities create art through collaboration programs. Jackson sat down with us to talk about his career and artistic journey.
CULTURE
"I get out what I put in. So, in order for my work to reach its full potential, I have to be completely transparent with myself." How would you describe your art style and technique? I would consider my style gestural painting: unpredictable splashes of color that create composition. I allow energy to direct me in the path in which it intends for me to travel. I challenge normal practices by combining materials that are unlikely to be combined and colors that are unlikely to mix to create an unexpected work of art. I then add details like paint splatters and additional brushstrokes to build more depth toward the end.
28 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
What do you enjoy most about the experience or process of creating art? The conversation my work and I have is [about] what I enjoy the most about the process. Experiencing that is interesting because it requires me to listen to silence in a room full of sound. I get out what I put in. So, in order for my work to reach its full potential, I have to be completely transparent with myself. How has your background or family shaped your art? What made you decide to become an artist?

No one in my family was an artist, so we never talked about it. I started painting in 2014, but a couple years before that I had experienced one of the toughest periods of my life. I lost a lot of my livelihood… I needed an immediate outlet. There were certain mistakes that I didn’t want to make again in life. I discovered something that I enjoyed, and the money wasn’t the reason—it was the ownership of something valuable, having something that the world couldn’t take away. No matter what mistakes I’ve made, I created it. Whenever I sell an original piece, it’s a major step in the right direction and feels like five steps away from the past. Where do you draw your inspiration? My inspiration comes from being free—never wanting to feel captive again. I also draw from my life experiences. I used to struggle with expression, so I kept a lot of emotions tucked away in order to eliminate the consequences for expressing myself. So now, when I’m in front of a canvas, I have a lot of emotion to pour out. Being able to voice my feelings and thoughts with pure freedom and no judgement—that’s what inspires me to create my work. info jaxabstracts.com @jaxabstracts

VUE by SEK is anything but an ordinary jewelry company. Owner and primary designer Sarah Kaplan believes that jewelry should be expressive of the individual wearing it, showcasing your own “view” and unique style. That’s also why the VUE by SEK team works hard to offer its clients thoughtfully designed pieces handcrafted by Sarah. VUE sets out to create one-of-a-kind jewelry that is authentic, conscious, and artistic. Sarah shared with us more on her inspiration behind VUE by SUK, what it's like owning your own business, and VUE’s plans for the future. Sarah, when was your company founded? Has jewelry design always been a passion of yours? Throughout my childhood, I can’t remember a period when I wasn’t creating or making jewelry. However my original career goal was to work at my favorite art museum. After college, I found myself in DC working for that very art museum and surrounded by amazing artworks and creative people. It was here that I felt a desire to return to creating my own art. This led to a long process of self teaching, goldsmith training, and experimenting with new designs until VUE by SEK officially launched. As both founder and designer, what does a typical work day entail? My days can rotate between meetings, social, production, order fulfillment and my daily trips to the post office and so on. Since

“It is incredibly rewarding to witness each of our small wins and to see how far the business has developed already.” the pandemic started, I have implemented a creative day once a week. This designated day is free of meetings and solely focuses on creative design and brainstorming. I thrive when I’m able to create and explore new opportunities. And designating this day has led to such a fulfilling and more thoughtful work week. What is the best part about owning your own small business? Most challenging part? The best part is creating something from the start and being able to establish your own company values and products. It is incredibly rewarding to witness each of our small wins and to see how far the business has developed already. The most challenging part is that we are a small business with a small operating budget, which forces us to prioritize where we spend and save. Do you plan on expanding the product line as your business continues to grow? Yes. We are currently working on three designs to expand our small collection of necklaces. We will also be launching a completely new jewelry category early next year that we are thrilled about. It is just in the early stages of development. Stay tuned! info vuebysek.com @vuebysek

Jasmine Koch and Joseph Keenan are co-owners of Charlotte’s traveling espresso bar. Their remodeled trailer has been on the road for just over a year now, and they visit different local spots each week to share Coordinates’ delicious flavors and bubbling personalities with as many people as possible. Recently, we chatted with this duo to unpack the ideas behind their growing business as it gains popularity, and to take a closer look at their positive impact on coffee lovers in our community. What is the significance behind the name “Coordinates Coffee?” We believe your unique journey and the places you go become part of you somehow. A single pinpoint or a dot on the map represents a part of your journey that transformed you: the exact place on this earth you fell in love, or a place of birth or rebirth. Whatever the coordinates, we believe your footprint represents a part of your journey that shaped you and will forever be stained in your memory. How has Coordinates Coffee connected with the local community? Our two main passions are coffee and a desire to share it with our community. We believe that we all have a duty to do as much good and share as much love as possible with the people around us. We wouldn’t be here without our community so it’s important to us that we support our patrons and give back in any way we can. Working from a mobile truck allows us to reach new people each week.

What is the inspiration behind coffee pouches rather than traditional cup styles? The idea for the coffee pouches came to us during isolation and quarantine last April as a way to remain in business safely while still providing a little whimsy and joy to our customers during a pandemic. With their popularity and the ease of their marketing, our pouches soon became a way for us to also speak on social injustices. Our main hope is that the messages on the pouches spark important conversations amongst people in our community. What is the menu crafting process like? Although Joseph manages the analytical and technical aspects of the business while I (Jasmine) handle creative details, we select our menu together. We sit down and brainstorm flavors to put a unique and memorable spin on our coffee. Some are seasonal flavors and others are permanent. All of our syrups

used in drinks are house-made from organic, vegan, and all natural ingredients, and we source our coffee beans locally from Enderly Coffee, a coffee roaster right here in Charlotte. We both have our favorites on the menu—Joseph loves the lavender vanilla, and I prefer the rosemary vanilla. Does Coordinates Coffee have any plans for expansion in the future? In the near future, we would love to create another mobile espresso bar because we love the traveling aspect of our company and the ability to visit different communities throughout the Charlotte area. Eventually, we would love to open a brick and mortar when the right place comes along but for now, we are enjoying the journey just as it is. info coordinatescoffee.com / @coordinatescoffee

Family-owned and the first of its kind on the East Coast, Kristin Cagney brings her dream of owning a seltzery to the Queen City. words JULIA FUNDERBURK
Kristin Cagney, a longtime fan of laid back atmospheres and the craft aspect of beer, always dreamed of owning and operating a brewery. However, she had to adjust her vision accordingly when she was met with an immediate challenge: Charlotte’s alcohol market is saturated with indoor and outdoor breweries and venues that are already established favorites in the community. “I didn’t know where to start to properly differentiate myself until I noticed my friends and family making the switch from beer to seltzer. I joked with my friends about opening a ‘seltzery’ and they kept telling me how good of an idea it was.” Summit Seltzer, opened earlier last year in the burgeoning Wesley Heights nieghborhood, was born.

The inspiration behind Summit’s name, image, and aesthetic stems from Cagney’s personal life and interests. She’s a social butterfly and outdoor fanatic who loves to ski. “Beer was too heavy and hard alcohol hits just a little too hard,” says Cagney. “Seltzer became my go-to drink at the top of the slopes.” A Colorado resident for ten years, Cagney finally landed in Charlotte for several reasons: The people and the culture of the city captured her interest, and the untapped market for seltzer cemented the deal. Sea Level NC has been a passion project for owner Paul Manley, as he sought a way to create a seafood restaurant that grew its own signature items and relied on local, sustainable supply. Manley partnered with local NC oyster and clam farmers in Sea Level, North Carolina to grow his own line of product, designed and harvested specifically to his restaurant standards. The majority of the restaurant’s seafood items are harvested from local NC farms, in partnership with coastal fisher-
men, and Sea Level NC is dedicated to serving only nonthreatened species. One of the locally sourced seafood offerings that is a “go to” favorite for us is the salmon. Their entree accompaniments change seasonally, but no matter when you order it, the salmon is always the freshest Atlantic-sourced and features local dressings. It makes for a light but satisfying meal that’s delicious no matter what time of year you order.

On a menu flush with options with a twist, Red Salt’s Pretzel Crusted Crab Cakes are a seafood showstopper. From the brilliant and creative mind of Chef David Burke, this dish has the perfect amount of crunch, sweetness, and spice. A new addition to Le Meridien in Uptown, Red Salt is a gastro lounge with a Southern theme and local ingredients. In this dish, tomatoes and oranges are sustainably sourced to make a refreshing jam for the cakes, while other fresh produce is blended to create a spicy pesto. Both toppings are beautifully laid across the crab cakes and served straight from the kitchen, elegantly, with an emphasis on inventive platings. — info — redsaltbydb.com / @redsaltbydavidburke

Half of newly opened design firms go bankrupt within the first five years. Within the next five years, half of the design firms that managed to claw their way through the first chapter of their opening will also go bankrupt. Lawler Design Studio has traversed the gauntlet of the design industry for almost 20 years, leaving a substantial portfolio of gorgeous residential and commercial projects in its wake. The secret to Lawler Design Studio’s success lies with its founder, Suzanna Lawler. Lawler has wrapped an unstoppable blend of talent, astute client instincts, networking, and business acumen into her design firm and the proof is in her gorgeous portfolio and business longevity. Talent — You don’t celebrate almost 20 successful years in the business if you don’t have an eye for design. Lawler has an undeniable talent for creating interior and exterior spaces that exceed the ordinary in terms of beauty and functionality. Moreover, her visions are versatile; she is able to design for a wide variety of clients and tastes without sacrificing an ounce of aesthetic integrity.

Client Instincts — Suzanna Lawler is like a conduit for her clients’ design desires. Her process and natural intuition get at the heart of what each unique client needs and wants in each unique space. “It’s not about me; it’s about my clients,” Lawler explains. “If I am true to the concept of extracting their inner style, every project will be as unique and special as each client.” Lawler Design Studio executes projects for both residential and commercial clients. When working on a residential project, Lawler explores her clients’ personal needs, family dynamics, lifestyle choices, likes and dislikes. She asks probing and important questions about her residential clients’ daily life, entertaining aspirations, and future family plans, then guides clients as they select finishes and furnishings. Ultimately, the interiors she creates are very personal to each client, functional yet aesthetically charming, and timeless. Networking — Suzanna Lawler learned early in her career the value of surrounding oneself with people who amplify your light while emitting

their own. Angela Neel is one such person. Neel served as a mentor to Lawler during the early years of her career, encouraging and even enabling her to launch her own firm. “That was 17 years ago, and the faith and confidence that she had in me gave me the courage that I needed to get me to where I am today,” says Lawler. Since then, Lawler has prioritized professional relationships that are similarly generous and rewarding for all parties. “Everyone, from the architects and builders to the clients and employees, must be in it for the right reasons,” says Lawler. “That means finding those who are dedicated, kind, team-oriented, honest, and live by an abundance posture rather than a scarcity mindset. We have a great time at work most days, and that is by design.”
“No matter how talented the designer is, you will not make it if you can’t run the business.” A Head for Business — The final but crucial component to Lawler’s success is her business acumen. Lawler puts it bluntly: “No matter how talented the designer is, you will not make it if you can’t run the business.” Lawler formerly taught a Professional Practice course at the University of Southern Mississippi during which she imparted indispensable wisdom to her students related to the business side of running a successful interior design firm. In this class, she started her students’ training process insofar as billing clients, sourcing products, coordinating team members, and the other necessary operations of running a business are concerned. For Lawler, her passion for her profession stems from the entire blend of

More Success Ahead — So, what lies ahead for this dynamite designer? Suzanna Lawler and her team at Lawler Design Studio have been working together over the past decade to create a curated cabinetry line called “Curated by Lawler Design.” They started the line by coordinating with crafters, woodworkers, and designers within an Amish community. Over the years, Lawler’s team has studied the latest and greatest innovations the industry has to offer to infuse modern functionality into timeless craftsmanship. On the horizon, Lawler looks to open this cabinetry line to retail customers, thereby sharing the cabinets that the Lawler Design Studio clients know and love with the general public. This Cramer’s Pond, Plaza Midwood home has outdoor living implemented perfectly for backyard enjoyment year round. Built by Grandfather Homes in 2019, the home is quietly tucked away on a cul-de-sac with an outdoor space that is unexpectedly gracious and very private. The motorized screened porch effortlessly transitions to the spa and pool with an outdoor wood burning fireplace that’s attached to the owners’ garage. The homeowners PJ and Meghan Mulhern put an enormous amount of time and consideration into the project and were involved with every decision and selection to make the space truly their own. In addition to Grandfather serving as the builder, Mermans Architecture and Design served as the architect, and Tammy Coulter Design led the material selections. By adding the fireplace to the garage, the clients are able to utilize every square foot of the yard, and the Grandfather team was able to also add architectural interest to the detached garage with the addition of the chimney.

When a family of five decided it was time to find their forever home in North Carolina, they began remotely scouting properties from their home in Chicago. One home in particular caught their eye. It ticked many of the boxes: 4800 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, and located in a walkable, established, and trendy neighborhood a few miles from downtown Greensboro. But the house also had some ornate features and fussy interiors that did not appeal to the family and kept them from pulling the trigger on purchase. That’s when they contacted Lisa Sherry Interieurs. The family toured the house with Lisa herself by their side and

both parties were able to imagine what the house could be. The family purchased the home and Lisa Sherry Interieurs set to work applying her organic-modern aesthetic to a hitherto stuffy interior. Lisa focused her efforts on the first floor to create a more open feeling living area, including living room, family room, dining room, breakfast room, and primary bedroom. She began by taking control of the color palette, applying a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore China White to the walls in every room. This selection had two positive effects: it better unified the first floor rooms and it gave Lisa a neutral but elegant backdrop for the rest of her design decisions.
HOME & DESIGN
“I think imperfect or problem spaces are an opportunity to make magic.”
She then turned her attention to furniture, lighting, and flooring. In Chicago, the family’s decor was something of a happy hodgepodge, composed of many years’ worth of acquisitions. The family gave Lisa permission to start fresh. Lisa began imagining her blank canvas in layers, adding and subtracting features as needed, balancing tactile, organic elements with pristine, modern elements. The resulting aesthetic is modern, casual yet sophisticated, eclectic yet well-edited. Because this redesign was a makeover, not a remodel, Lisa needed to work with the existing layout of the house. There was no shortage of challenges, but Lisa was undaunted. “I think imperfect or problem spaces are an opportunity to make magic,” says Lisa. For example, the home’s den is fairly long and narrow, which made creating a traditional, centralized gathering place difficult. So, Lisa divided the den into two unique sitting areas, separated by a custom, dual-sided sofa with a quieter and smaller area on one side and a larger area facing the TV and fireplace on the other side. Using her keen eye and discerning taste, Lisa and the rest of her team at Lisa Sherry Interieurs manifested one family’s North Carolina dream home. Together, they created a fresh, modern, soulful space that is equipped to sustain its residents for decades to come. info lisasherryinterieurs.com @lisasherryinterieurs

Nestled away in the mountain tops, 5,000 feet above the world, is The Swag, one of the South’s top resorts and “the epitome of rustic luxury.” Located in Waynesville, NC, just 40 minutes west of Asheville, The Swag has been called “the most romantic hideaway.” The all-inclusive mountain resort is open for its 40th season and continues to offer guests an escape from the crowded city within its historical walls. The 250 acre mountain top inn was originally built as a family home in 1971 by founders Dan and Deener Matthews. Just over a decade later in 1982, The Swag opened as an inn. It features 16 different lodging options, allowing patrons to choose between The Swag House rooms, Chestnut Lodge rooms, or cabins and suite-style rooms. The rooms are adorned with original artwork, woven rugs, and most include private balconies. Romantic goers can take advantage of the outdoor soaking tubs, jacuzzis, and saunas in the Matthews’ Suite or Hideaway room. Other rooms offer wood-burning fireplaces and steam showers. The room rates include all meals, hors d’oeuvres, and cookies and nuts daily.

Take the coziest of mountain getaways to one of our favorite Airbnbs near Boone, NC. words ELEANOR MERRELL
Over ten years ago, Emily South and her husband John took a fateful trip to western North Carolina. What originated as a vacation transformed into a dream. “We fell in love with the area and at that moment knew we wanted to one day own property in the mountains.” Years passed, during which John and Emily welcomed three kids into the world and nursed their company, Shoestring Productions, well into the black. In 2018, the dream started to feel like a possibility so the Souths began their hunt for the perfect spot.

They sought a structure that would comfortably fit their five-person-one-dog family without sprawling across the land. “It took a very long time to find our cabin and there were many times I wanted to give up,” confesses Emily. “We would come across properties that met some of our criteria but not all of it. Or aesthetically the homes just weren’t our style and no amount of cosmetic renovations would help.” Finally, they found their A-frame. It wasn’t perfect, but it was full of potential.
TR AVEL
Constructed in the 1970s, the mountain getaway had its fair share of eraspecific quirks. Emily, charmed by the structure’s uniqueness, preserved some of the quirks while updating the interior to enhance comfort and create a more modern aesthetic. “It’s almost unrecognizable when I go back and look at old photos,” says Emily. “I am so proud that we were able to see the potential and breathe new life into the space.” Now, the three-bedroom, threebath rental cabin has a spacious deck and hot tub overlooking the hills and valleys of western North Carolina, an interior wet bar, an outdoor fire pit, and a Multicade, making it the perfect destination for a family getaway. In the coming year, Emily has dreams for her mountain hideaway. She is a yoga teacher and aspires to host retreats at the A-frame. She also intends to shift her attention from the interior to the exterior. Her plan is to focus on landscaping and maximizing the two acres of magical forest that the home sits amid. She also hopes to soon offer additional, customized amenities and experiences in partnership with other small businesses. Regardless of how the rest of 2021 shakes out, Emily will continue dreaming up new ways to “host with heart” and make guests feel both welcome and valued. And, as she looks ahead, she can’t help but look back: “2020 took a very strange turn and, for our family, gave us the gift of perspective. I believe, like our family, many are getting clear on their priorities, so it is such an honor to think that the Appalachian AFrame is a destination people choose to gather with their loved ones.” To reserve the Appalachian AFrame, plan to book your stay online at least four months in advance. info stayappaframe.com @appalachianaframe

From the rugged landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the sandy shores of the South Carolina beaches and all the unique cities in between, the Carolinas are inherently explorable. Brimming with diversity, both geographically and culturally, we love discovering all that they have to offer. For us, the need to explore is inherent—it’s an integral part of our identity. We’re so grateful to live in a state that not only embraces outdoor culture, but wholeheartedly encourages it. We at QCExclusive recently launched our social media channel called @DiscoverTheCarolinas on both Instagram and Tik Tok to share the beauty of NC and SC. During that process we have met so many amazing photographers. So, for this travel issue we decided to feature those talented individuals that promote the amazing places in our region with their images. We reached out to 13 Carolina-based photographers, both profes-
sional and hobbyists, in order to showcase the best of our two favorite states. Our goal was to celebrate all the Carolinas have to offer, while simultaneously gaining a fresh perspective on spots we’ve visited or have yet to visit. While each photographer has their own unique style, technique, and influence, they all have one thing in common: their love of the Carolina wilderness. So, check out all of their favorite locales, learn what inspires them to go out and create, and give them a follow on social media to see all the beautiful places in our area they share. After a year of isolation, many of us have begun to feel that all too familiar itch to travel. Between North and South Carolina, there is so much to explore, see, and experience. So go on that weekend trip, take a spontaneous drive out to the beach, or watch the sunrise from a mountaintop. We hope these shots ignite and inspire the wanderlust inside you.

JUSTIN POTTER @jpotterphoto —
For Justin Potter, photography is a family affair. He grew up watching his mother work as a professional motorsports photographer. As he got older, he realized he too had a passion for the sport and the artform. Today Justin works as an official employee of NASCAR. When he’s not traveling across the country for work, he enjoys exploring the beautiful North Carolina landscape. What's your favorite spot to photograph? The Linville Gorge, specifically Hawksbill and a spot called the Chimneys. That area is just such a cool spot to go and explore. The Linville River flows through it, so you hear the sound of flowing water even on top of the mountains. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, you can find a cool shot or just sit and soak it all in. Do you partake in other types of photography? I do! I shoot weddings, family photos, a few real estate shoots, and some food and beverage shoots. But the one that I love the most, and hope to do more of in the future, is motorsports. Last year, I got the chance to shoot the drag races in Char-
lotte, NC, and it was one of the most amazing weekends I’ve ever had! How were you drawn to landscape photography? For the nature side of it, for as long as I can remember I have had an affinity for being outdoors. I grew up in the mountains of Northern California, which was like a nature lover’s paradise. Once I started hiking in my new home state of North Carolina, that flame was lit again. Sunrises or sunsets? Sunrises! Only because it's usually just you and nature up on the mountain in the mornings. Not everyone will get up at 4 a.m. to hike in the dark just hoping it'll be a great sunrise! Is photography your full-time job? If not, what else do you do? It’s not my full-time job, but the hours I put into photography probably equals out to a full-time job. I work for Stewart-Haas Racing as a body fabricator. It’s a great company to work for and they’re like family to me.

ANDREW BURNS @andrewtburns —
Born and raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Andrew Burns' love of capturing the outdoors runs deep. His introduction to photography came during childhood after he received a Polaroid camera as a gift. As he grew, so did his appreciation for nature and the artform. He currently shoots with a Sony a7RII. When he’s not on the ground, Andrew likes to fly his drone to get amazing aerial shots of the North Carolina mountains. Did your love of the outdoors inform your love of photography? Or was it the other way around? Describe your artistic journey. I loved the outdoors before I took photos. Growing up in Western North Carolina, there is really nothing else to do except be outside. But I learned to love and appreciate nature and respect the land more so after I had been traveling around with a camera in my hand. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Most of my inspiration comes from what I see during a hike.

When I go for walks, I literally pan my surroundings nonstop, always looking for a shot. What would you say to new landscape photographers who are just starting out? When starting out, it’s not about the most expensive cameras or lenses that makes a great photographer. It’s just about what you see. Get out and shoot as much as time allows you to. What’s one item you can’t live without while you're out in nature shooting? It varies depending on the situation, but most of the time I cannot live without my camp stove. There is nothing like having a warm meal in the middle of the cold woods. What compels you to shoot? The weather. It plays a big role in getting the kind of shots I want. I would prefer a super cloudy day with dense fog rolling over the ridges.

LESLIE RESTIVO @leslie_restivo —
Even from an early age, Boone, NC, native Leslie Restivo felt drawn to photography. However, it wasn’t until her first child Savannah was born that she decided to really learn the artform. According to Leslie, Savannah inspires her each and everyday to pursue her passion. When she’s not taking pictures in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Leslie enjoys other forms of photography including real estate, portraits, products, sports, wildlife, and just about everything in-between. She shoots with a Sony a7II. What draws you to photography? It is all I think about. I would love to be shooting every day. I have never had anything feel more right. It is my calm, my peace, my love. I have never had anything make me happy like photography does. The feeling is unexplainable. Fate! Can you share your favorite spot to shoot? Linville Gorge has my heart. I could literally photograph there every day and never get sick of it. No where like it on Earth. Did your love of the outdoors inform your love of photography? Or was it the other way around? It was definitely a combination of both. I have always been
fascinated by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The raw beauty is shocking. However, now that I am shooting I have deeper appreciation for how beautiful my home is. I notice the little things more. It made me learn to stop and breathe and reflect; to take in all the amazing things around me. There is nothing more soothing than spending time outside here. I have a strong urge to protect this amazing area for years to come. Any photographers that inspire or influence your work? There are countless people that inspire me. I am so lucky to be surrounded by talented photographers I met on Instagram that have become my best friends. Two of my greatest inspirations are Luke Sutton and Tommy White. Both amazing people, kind and talented. What are your must-haves when out shooting? My tripod and my Astral shoes—love them! what words of wisdom would you give to new landscape photographers who are just starting out? Take your camera everywhere with you. Shoot everything and never give up. Do not forget to make every adventure fun. Always stay true to you and believe in yourself.

JAMES O. REYNOLDS @ashevillepictures —
Photographer James O. Reynolds grew up in suburban Dallas, TX. He first discovered his love for the outdoors on a family trip to Southwestern Montana where he experienced a completely different ecosystem. After seeing the lush mountains, rivers, forests, wildlife, and of course, Yellowstone National Park, he became enamored with the outdoors. He realized he wanted to capture what he saw so he picked up a camera and has been shooting ever since. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Home in Western North Carolina is one abundant source of inspiration. Everything is new and unique with each sunrise and sunset. Which photographers have inspired your work? I suppose any American nature photographer who does not list Ansel Adams is just being forgetful. I have learned a lot from following a number of big-timers, since almost everyone at the top seems to offer tips and tricks as part of their social media

strategy. Colin Brown, Jack Fusco, Richard Bernabe, and hundreds of others, quite frankly. Where is your favorite place to photograph? This is a tricky one because there are several favorite spots of mine that are hardly secrets. But many are so overrun lately, that I have stopped naming locations and embraced the “Leave No Trace” ethos. But the Blue Ridge Parkway within an hour’s drive from Asheville in either direction, and the Appalachian trail along the NC/TN boundary, are full of favorite spots. What motivates you to go out and shoot? The thrill of being creative, the newness of every outing, and the deeper connection to my surroundings that comes from it. What is one piece of advice you would tell someone new to photography? Use a tripod. Get set up well before sunrise and/or plan to stay well after sunset and don’t go wider than f/11 in most cases.

LISA GREGORY @wildwoodblessing —
Lisa Gregory is many things: a photographer, an avid hiker, and an RN at a heart transplant clinic in Charlotte, NC. Her love of photography was informed by her love of nature and her devotion to God. Before pursuing photography, she would take hundreds of photos on her iPhone. After her husband surprised her with a beginner camera kit, she fell in love with it. She now shoots with a Canon 6D Mark II. When did your love for the outdoors begin? Over 40 years ago, I was a student at Appalachian State University and fell in love with the mountains. I was part of an outdoorsmanship program similar to Outward Bound. We would spend long periods of time in Linville Gorge camping, backpacking, climbing, repelling, and learning survival techniques. To this day, I wish I would have had a camera to capture those experiences. What are some obstacles you face as a nature photographer? Being a female photographer can pose obvious safety concerns when hiking in more desolate areas. I am thankful to have a
group of female photographers to go hiking and shooting with. When I do go alone, I travel to more populated trails with my favorite hiking buddy, my Australian Shepard Nellie. For people just getting started with photography, what advice would you share with them? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you see it and you think it's beautiful, capture it. Don't give up. I have only been doing this for two years. I knew nothing about photography. I had to Google what shutter speed meant. What’s the most rewarding aspect of your photography? Being able to share the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains with those who aren't able to be here. I love to see comments from followers that express joy when they see a photo of mine. What is your dream destination? There are a few places I can think of, but I would love to travel to Katmai National Park in Alaska. Capturing the bears during the salmon runs would be an unforgettable experience.

Luke Sutton is a wildlife photographer based out of Maggie Valley, NC. He was first introduced to photography after injuring his knee in a snowboarding accident. He wanted to stay involved with the sport so he decided to shoot photos instead. From then on out, he was hooked. Nowadays Luke focuses on nature and travel photography. He feels compelled to capture amazing places and loves to share his work with his audience on Instagram where he has amassed nearly 10,000 followers. How did you choose landscape photography as your genre? I kind of just fell into nature and travel photography. Living so close to so many beautiful places, and my love of traveling, made nature photography an easy choice. What are some obstacles you face as a photographer? The growing development of land everywhere. It’s making it harder at night with light pollution. Mountains are starting to become developments, making some spots unphotogenic.

Where does your inspiration come from? I draw my inspiration from everything. I’m constantly looking at things everywhere I go. How would you encourage those just starting out in Landscape photography? Don’t let any negative comments about your work discourage you. Love what you create. Photography is an expression of yourself not others. What equipment do you shoot with? Currently a Sony A7R IV is my camera body. I use a mixture of Sony and Canon lenses. For Canon lenses I use a Metabones adapter. I have a Really Right Stuff tripod, use a mixture of NISI filters, and carry a Shimoda Action X50 camera bag. What is your favorite lens? My 16-35mm f2.8 GM lens.

CHRIS STINSON @stinsonc —
In 2011, Chris Stinson moved from the flatlands of Central Florida to Maggie Valley, NC, just outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It took a few years for him to rediscover his love of the outdoors, but once he started exploring he never stopped. In 2018 he bought a camera and has been shooting the NC landscape ever since. He currently shoots with Fujifilm X-H1.
What makes you want to get out and shoot? I honestly just enjoy watching the sun rise and set in the mountains. I enjoy exploring waterfalls and anything that might have a view. Having a camera along just makes it that much better.
Can you share your favorite location to photograph? Living in Maggie Valley there are so many amazing locations within an hour drive. Some of the best sunrises and sunsets can be found on the stretch of Blue Ridge Parkway between Asheville and Maggie Valley.
In your opinion what is the most rewarding aspect of your photography? The most rewarding aspect would have to be when someone reaches out and lets you know how much a photo touched them. Any time I can bring joy to someone with a photo makes it all worth it.
What's the key to getting beautiful landscape images? Don’t be afraid to experiment. Don’t get wrapped up on only hiking the most popular trails and overlooks. Some of the best photos I’ve found have been off the beaten path.
What’s one item you can’t live without while shooting? Well, my camera is the first thing that comes to mind, but I would also say a circular polarizer. When shooting waterfalls, they really can make a scene pop.

RACHEL PRESSLEY @rachelbpressley —
Growing up Rachel Pressley would often go on camping trips with her family. During each excursion, her mother would give her and her sister a disposable camera and a journal so that they could document their experiences. This opened Rachel’s creative eye and was her jump-start into photography. Rachel, like her mother and her sister before her, attended Appalachian State University where she majored in sustainable development, concentrating in environmental studies and minored in commercial photography and journalism. Her studies taught her about the devastating effects humans can have on the environment, and inspired her to document the natural beauty of the land. Today she works as an editorial assistant for a local publishing company in Western North Carolina.
paid off in more ways than one and I really think it’s the sole reason I am still here today. Describe your artistic journey. My love of the outdoors informed my love of photography, but my love of photography also grew my infatuation with the outdoors. The more time I spent with my camera outside, the more I fell in love with both being in nature and getting creative. I’ve dabbled in many forms of photography outside of landscape photography, but it’s still the only one that has stuck as a hobby for me.
What inspires you to shoot? When it comes to nature photography, something inside of me pushes me out the door with my hiking boots on and backpack strapped. Sometimes, I swear I’m not in control. My creative juices get flowing, and out the door I go. I can be exhausted, but I’ll still get out and shoot. I live to create, it’s what makes me feel most like myself.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have to face as a landscape photographer? While I wouldn’t label this as an obstacle, the nature photography industry has become so saturated, especially since social media took off. I try to remain focused on my work alone, practice not comparing myself to others, but rather celebrating the fact that there are so many people out there who feel the same drive and passion to get outside and shoot as I do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your photography? The mentality that it has given me as an adult. I have such a zest for chasing the light, getting outside with friends, and taking in experiences on a much deeper level now. It has shaped me into the hardworking, compassionate individual I dreamed about being when I was a rebellious teenager. It has

MIKE POGGIOLI @mpthecomebackid —
Mike Poggioli first became interested in photography during his daily commutes on Chicago’s “L” train. He describes those rides as an “architectural tour” of the city. Every day he would spend the ride snapping photos with his iPhone. As his passion for architectural photography grew, he began connecting with street photographers in the area. Eventually he transitioned from an iPhone to a Canon 5D Mark III. After moving to Asheville last year, he began focusing on nature and landscape photography. When he’s not out shooting photos, he works full-time as a psychologist. Did your love of the outdoors inform your love of photography? Or was it the other way around? I fell in love with photography when I lived in Chicago about five years ago. I always felt a connection to nature, though, so it only made sense that I'd end up moving to a city nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. I'd say they inform one another! For example, photography helped me discover the Asheville area to a fuller extent. I researched more hikes, overlooks, and waterfalls to explore and always brought my camera with me!
How did you choose nature photography as your genre? I switched to nature photography when I moved to Asheville last year. Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains challenged me to apply my editing style to a whole new content area. It's been a great learning experience! What inspires your photography? I draw my inspiration from the beauty I find from light. I've become fascinated with how light can transform a subject. Soft, hazy colors from sunrise or sunset, or the harsh light during golden hour bring out so much beauty in any context—urban or nature settings. What’s one item you can’t live without while shooting? I recently got a set of Sandmarc ND-polarizing filters. They're game-changers! I also can't go without iced coffee if I'm going on a shooting adventure. What drives you to go out and shoot? Photography is a form of mindfulness and has become my creative outlet and primary means of self-care.

MYLES GELBACH @mylesperhour_photography —
Myles Gelbach is a Charlotte native with a love for photographing both cityscapes and landscapes. Growing up he witnessed Charlotte’s rapid growth. The ever-evolving skyline intrigued and inspired him. During his childhood, Myles also went on a lot of backpacking adventures with his father. The combination of city living and his avid outdoorsmanship, helped form his artistic vision. Once he got his first camera, he made an effort to learn as much as he could about photography. What sparked your interest in photography? I've had a camera phone and took snapshots for years. But on a trip to the Grand Canyon, I tried my hardest to take a picture of the sunset, but no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to look like what my eyes saw. Shortly after that, I was on a backpacking trip to Linville Gorge and experienced the same thing. That day I got home, I went to Best Buy and bought my first camera. Is photography your full-time job? Currently just a hobby with the occasional paid job. In my day-today, I work for a company that builds sets for television studios.

Can you share your favorite spot to shoot? Pretty much anywhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It seems like every overlook offers a new, gorgeous view. But my favorite spot on the parkway is the Frying Pan Lookout Tower. Being able to take in the panoramic views is just amazing. Any advice you’d like to give landscape photographers who are just starting out? Persistence pays off. I've watched so many duds of a sunrise/ sunset, but you have to keep trying because you never know which one is going to be that magical one. What brand/gear/equipment do you use? I have a Sony camera, primarily Sony lenses, and a Benro tripod. What motivates you to shoot? To be able to document a slice of time. I love being able to take pictures of things that people don't always get to see, such as the full moon or storms.

PRAKASH GANIPINENI @prakashperspectives —
Prakash Ganipineni’s journey into photography happened suddenly and unexpectedly. As an avid traveler, Prakash realized that he experienced and appreciated life in a way that seemed to differ from those around him. While exploring different landscapes, cities, and towns he felt the urge to capture and preserve the amazing things he saw in a permanent way. After buying his first camera, he became hooked. Right now photography is just a hobby for Prakash. When he’s not chasing the perfect sunrise, he works as a software engineer. How did you choose nature photography as your genre? Initially I started with street, portrait, and landscape photography. During this process, I realized I was inclined towards landscape photography, as I felt we can preserve and share the best this world offers. Subsequently, it brought out the best in me too, as I recall days where I woke up at 3 a.m. and drove for hours just to see the sunrise, camp in the woods or mountain tops, even in the freezing cold. I would have probably laughed at anyone doing such things before photography consumed me. Any advice you’d like to give landscape photographers who are just starting out?
I’ll share my experience on how I started: I try to include a clear subject for most of my photographs and use leading lines or motion to lead the viewer’s eye onto my subject. I also try to add two-dimensional depth to my images by including shadows and highlights and exaggerate them in post processing. Describe your artistic journey with nature. I like the outdoors as it enables me to be spontaneous and seek new intimate experiences with nature. I use my camera to preserve those experiences. Once I started enjoying photography, it’s become both ways—I travel to photograph and photograph to travel. What drives you to shoot? Whenever I’m appreciating a moment, I feel the camera naturally floats towards my hand and I capture it. And the fact that a moment can be made immortal through photography is something very compelling, as it becomes an ideal medium to re-experience memory, connection, experience, humanity, and intimacy. Any photographers that inspire or influence your work? Many indeed! Ansel Adams, Marc Adamus, and Daniel Kordan are a few to name.

His photography mainly focuses on the Upstate portions of the state. Besides landscape photography, he also partakes in real estate photography, commercial photography, and personal portrait photography for families and individuals. How did you get introduced to nature photography? I love the great outdoors! I started hiking and backpacking first and then started carrying my camera so I could create images of the outdoor spaces we were hiking through. It just made sense to me, to combine the two things I love the most: hiking and photography. Who are your favorite photographers that inspire you? There are so many outdoor/adventure photographers that inspire me! Jimmy Chin, Renan Ozturk, Quin from Ever Changing Horizon, and Chris Burkard are some of my favorites.

What’s one item you can’t live without while shooting? I can't go anywhere without my drone! A drone literally gives you the opportunity to take a photo from almost every possible angle. It opens up a whole new world and perspective to shoot with. What inspires you to get out there photograph? I absolutely love adventuring. The sense of adventure and "living life to the fullest" that I get from exploring amazing places and being able to capture them in a photo is what makes me want to continue doing it. What are some obstacles you face as a landscape photographer? The biggest obstacle is definitely nature itself. If you're constantly shooting outside you always have the weather and environment to deal with, and sometimes they can be really unforgiving. Also, any sort of outdoor adventure photography is going to require a certain amount of physical effort. It's a lot of hiking to get places, so hopefully you like hiking!

SARAH LEEK @sarahmleek —
Sarah Leek grew up in the mountains on the border of North Carolina and Virginia. Her childhood consisted of hours spent digging in the garden, camping trips, and scenic picnics in beautiful places. Throughout her education, she was heavily involved in art classes. For her, art was, and is, a therapeutic way to deal with anxiety and depression. In middle school, her parents gifted her a camera and her love of photography began to grow. Sarah also cites Instagram as a huge source of inspiration for honing her photography skills. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Inspiration is everywhere: books, cinema, music, and of course other photographers. Sometimes I’ll read a poem or hear a song lyric that helps me envision an image I’d like to create. What compels you to shoot? It’s hard to explain what exactly compels me to shoot—there are so many aspects to it. I feel that being an artist is my identity and sharing that art with others is my purpose. It makes me feel alive and ignites a joy in me that nothing else ever has. It’s my greatest passion.
Any photographers that inspire or influence your work? My top inspiration at the moment is Alex Strohl, an adventure and travel photographer whose moody yet colorful editing style really resonates with me. I also find a lot of inspiration in female landscape photographers like Cath Simard and Christian Schaffer, who aren’t afraid of a challenge and encourage me to keep pushing myself into the male-dominated, outdoor industry. What’s one item you have to have while out shooting? I’ve learned from experience that the more comfortable I am, the longer I can shoot. The more focused I am on what I’m doing, and the more I enjoy doing it. I always make sure I have plenty of warm layers, rain protection, snacks, and water, so that I can make the most of my adventures. It can be quite miserable to be unprepared on a hike. What is your favorite lens? My Sigma Art 24-70 2.8 is, for the most part, the only lens I use. It’s a bit heavy but it creates beautifully sharp images and the zoom range is so versatile. The 2.8 F-stop also allows me to create bokeh effects, and helps with night photography.
