Although based in Charlotte, TFA Advisory collaborates with an international network of artists in order to offer private and corporate clients a wide selection of fine art. We sat down with Irina for the inside scoop on owning and operating a world-class art advisory firm out of the Queen City.

TFA Advisory serves beginning and established art collectors with integrity and expertise while ensuring that artists are equally represented and compensated with fair commissions. What would you say makes you stand out in the art collectors community? I have over 15 years of experience in the art market that include travels to New York, Washington DC, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, and into Europe. Where did you acquire your knowledge in contemporary art and who were your mentors? I studied art history at Salem College and earned a degree in art history and arts administration. Additionally, I have had

What is the most challenging aspect of your business, and what is the thing you enjoy most about art collection? One of the greatest challenges I’ve faced thus far is operating during COVID-19. PAINTING AND PRESENCE The process and portfolio of artist Gordon C. James. words ELEANOR MERRELL

The first accolade arrived in third grade, when Gordon C. James submitted an entry into a poster contest with a safety theme. Decades since then, the awards have been piling up. In 2020, James won the young readers' literature Kirkus Prize for I Am Every Good Thing along with the book’s author Derrick Barnes. “Art has always been in me and around me,” explains James, who grew up in a family with a comic book artist cousin and creative maternal uncles. James was raised just outside of DC but came to Charlotte at the behest of the McColl Center, which invited him to participate in their residency program. After years of studying and creating, James’ style is both academic and expressive, inspired by John Singer Sargent, Nicolai Fechin, and Henry Ossawa Tanner.

James’ fine art portfolio is broken into five sections: origin story, romantic paintings, portraits, figure drawing, and sketchbook. Although all of James’ art is striking, his origin pieces stand apart. “I put together all of those things that make me who I am as an artist in order to come up with these works. The origin is mine,” says James. These pieces are where James takes his time, working until he’s satisfied, until the subject has fully revealed itself to him and he has transferred his revelation to the canvas. No matter which section of his portfolio James is working on, the process remains the same. “The work begins with a challenge to myself,” explains James. “It could be a feeling I want to capture or a subject I want to tackle.” He sketches thumbnail drawings, often 20 to 30 for each painting, then creates a small color drawing. Only then does he move on to the large, final canvas.

“Art has always been in me and around me.” Gordon James also shares his artistic gifts with the publishing industry. As a children’s book illustrator, he has partnered with authors like Derrick Barnes, David Adler, and Patricia McKissack. “Collaboration brings out the best in both parties,” says James. That’s certainly the case with Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut, which James created with Derrick Barnes (another Charlotte resident). It is one of the most decorated books in the history of children’s literature. Its accolades include a Society of Illustrators Gold Medal, the 2018 Caldecott Honor, 2018 Newbery Honor, 2018 Coretta Scott King Honor and more. To continue refining his craft, James’ primary approach is deceptively difficult: “I listen to music of different genres, look at all the art I can, and observe and be present in my world. I try to put as much of this world into my brain as possible.” As consumers of his art, we have the pleasure of seeing glimpses of our world refracted through the creative mind of Gordon James and the result is staggering.

It Takes a Village: Charlotte Artist Collectives is a new exhibition running through September 12 at Mint Museum Randolph. The show celebrates the vibrant, grassroots art happening throughout Charlotte by presenting local works of art from three of the city's innovative artist collectives: Goodyear Arts, BlkMrktClt, and Brand the Moth. Jen Sudul Edwards, the Mint's chief curator and curator of contemporary art, organized the show. Each collective will have its own gallery at Mint Museum Randolph. The works on display are by artists of diverse backgrounds, many born in countries outside the U.S., using all sorts of materials — from oil paint to woven fabric, collage to ceramics.

Many of the artists featured in It Takes a Village were involved with the Black Lives Matter mural in Uptown Charlotte and were in the wildly popular LOCAL/STREET exhibition, organized by Carla Aaron-Lopez in March at Mint Museum Randolph, which featured more than 40 artists of color. Jules Zanoni knows plants. The Chicago native is the proud owner of Grow, a boutique plant shop that specializes in all things green and leafy. After nearly two years in business, Grow has laid down its roots in the form of a brick and mortar storefront in Plaza Midwood and a flagship store in Camp North End. The idea of opening a boutique plant shop was first planted when Jules’ husband Adam grew tired of hearing her complain about the lack of plant stores in the Queen City. He suggested she open her own, and within a month Jules had found a small place to rent, obtained a business license, and started making connections with wholesalers and growers. Now, her and Adam, (or “head plant boy” as she affectionately calls him), have been able to blossom the business into something special. Jules talked to us about the ins and outs of running a small business, the house plants she can’t live without, and the best plants for beginners.

What first sparked your interest in gardening and plants? I’m actually lucky enough to remember getting my first plant that was my very own. It was a little cactus from the Tucson, AZ, airport when I was a young child. While plants haven’t always been a central part of my life, I have always appreciated having them around. How do you pick which plants get featured at Grow? I work with a select group of growers and wholesalers; some local, or semi-local, and some in Florida. I spend two to three days a week sourcing plants and handpick almost every single one (about 90 percent) of those that come through our doors and end up on our shelves. What advice would you give to someone who is just getting into buying and caring for plants?

Start small: I don’t necessarily mean with a small plant, but I mean start with just one or two plants. Plants are amazing, and some might say even addicting, so it’s easy to go overboard and want to quickly fill up your entire space with them. But honestly, it’s best to start with one or two. Like us, each plant is unique and has its own unique wants and needs. It’s so important to be able to take time and learn from your plants, and so incredibly satisfying to watch them thrive! What are a few household plants you think everyone could enjoy? Some really great plants that I believe most people would enjoy are Sansevierias or Snake Plants. There are so many and they’re all just so beautiful. Hoyas,

they’re some of my personal favorites, most varieties are pretty easy to care for and they have the most beautiful blooms. Then maybe some type of trailing Philodendron. They’re so lush and beautiful and bring so much life to any room! What are a few key things you would tell someone who wants to have a small business someday? I guess the number one thing I would say is that, in most cases, it’s not life or death. It’s easy to get wrapped up and feel like your business is your whole world and that if something goes wrong, it’s going to be the end of it all. That’s simply not true. We are all just people behind these businesses and we’re allowed to make mistakes.

What are some of the biggest challenges to running the business? Biggest rewards? One big challenge that is different from other retail, is that our product is alive. So we can’t ever just take a break and put things aside. We have to be fully hands on all the time to make sure our plants are healthy and thriving. On the flipside, the rewards are endless! There is truly nothing like seeing the looks of delight on our customers' faces when they walk through our doors. MORE SKIN IN THE GAME Toska Spa charts a SouthPark expansion. words ELEANOR MERRELL

Toska Husted is one of the most respected facial skincare experts not just in Charlotte, but in the world. She works with high profile clients including Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, the Kardashians, and Mandy Moore to help them achieve radiant, healthy, youthful skin. After opening a Toska Spa location in Charleston, Toska brought her business to the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte in 2016. (If you saw a substantial increase in the number of glowing, beautiful faces then, Toska Husted is probably why.) Now, Toska is moving again, but this time just down the road to the SouthPark area of Charlotte to provide greater convenience to clients. The new space took two years to design and build and cost a cool $1.2 million to create. Toska worked with Spectrum

The Dilworth Tasting Room (DTR) has been a favorite in Charlotte for years. Their relaxing atmosphere and wide selection of wines has made them an excellent choice for both advanced connoisseurs and those just interested in tasting something new. For owner and sommelier Jaffer Kovic, expanding into SouthPark felt like a natural next step for DTR. Kovic sits down with us to talk about the new modern and elevated space, the journey he’s taken to get here, and the future of DTR. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you get into the restaurant business? Where I really got my start was in Buffalo, New York folding pizza boxes in the back of a pizza shop. Eventually, I took an intro to wine class. I fell in love with wine, whether it was white, red, whatever, and I changed my focus in college to Food and Beverage and Finance and took every wine class imaginable. That propelled me into the business.

“Pick up any bottle at any price point and just enjoy it. Let it open up and talk to you.” How did you successfully turn your passion for wine into a career? I don’t really look at my passion as my career, I look at it as my love. I love what I do. I love being on the floor in any restaurant, talking to guests, engaging with them… I’ve been able to take that love I have with wine, liquor, and beer and bring all that back to working with guests. Do you have any advice for beginners looking to get into wine? Wine already has a stigma of being pretentious—my advice is to throw all of that out the window and not take it so seriously. Pick up any bottle at any price point and just enjoy it. Let it open up and talk to you. What made you choose the SouthPark neighborhood as your new location? SouthPark has a bit more of a neighborhood feel than Dilworth, so it’s good for folks who maybe don’t want to worry about parking or walking. Plus, we’ve always wanted a full kitchen and moving to SouthPark allowed us to have that.

Why did you decide to put a greater emphasis on food here? I see it like this: if you just want to drink, there are places to go drink. But if you want a real experience, you have to incorporate food at a higher level to complement what you’re drinking. Having that full kitchen just opened up a realm of possibilities for Chef Jonathan—an incredibly talented chef—to grow the menu and really complement our drink selection by doing what he does best. What does the future hold for both you and DTR? Another location, eventually, and growth and expansion for sure. Above all, what’s next for me is finding more time to spend with my family. Period. DOG FOCUSED, HUMAN FRIENDLY Skiptown gives South End pups a place to play. words ELEANOR MERRELL

If you live with a dog, then you may have experienced the difficulty of keeping Fido active enough to expend his boundless energy. Or perhaps your struggle is making sure your dog’s social life is as full as yours. Either way, Skiptown might be your solution. Skiptown, opened by Meggie Williams in South End in August of 2020, features 24,000 square feet of indoor space and 15,000 square feet of outdoor space. “Dog friendly” is probably not the best way to describe Skiptown; dog focused and human friendly are probably more apt terms. “Dogs are family,” Meggie says simply. “People in Charlotte love their pups and they love to have a good time.” With daycare and boarding services, home care, a dog park, a bar, and a high quality staff, Skiptown is a dog’s dream come true. Dog Park — Skiptown features both indoor and outdoor dog parks with ample space for four-legged friends to let loose. Paw-friendly

flooring inside and turf outside ensure that every pooch can get their zoomies out in comfort. In addition to space for romping (some of which is divided into leash and non-leash sections, as well as a separate small dog section), the Skiptown dog park has secret trails awaiting intrepid pups’ discovery, an agility course, and a splash pad. Throughout the park, dog referees keep an eye on the play to make sure things don’t get too rowdy. Park visitors can also take advantage of Skiptown’s self-service wash and dry stations, outfitted with elevated tubs, walk-up ramps, and a selection of shampoos. (Human) Bar — Skiptown was built with more than the dogs in mind; their human companions can stop by the bar and choose from 25 beers on tap or draft cocktails. Plus, Skiptown has a rotating selection of local food trucks and provides morning coffee service on the weekends.

The park offers an opportunity for bonds to develop not only among dogs but also among their human companions, whether that happens over drinks or over fetch. Due to the presence of alcohol, Skiptown does require all guests to be 21 years of age or older. Daycare and Boarding — For the dogs who can’t get enough of Skiptown and the humans who work or travel frequently, Skiptown offers another solution: daycare and boarding. To be eligible for these services, every dog must participate in a compatibility session during which Skiptown employees observe to make sure the dog isn’t aggressive or overly dominant, then get to know the dog’s personality and play style. Each dog is intentionally grouped with peers whose personalities and play styles complement one another. All Skiptown residents are under 24-hour supervision and their humans receive twice daily updates on their activities and well-being. Overnight hounds can enjoy orthopedic beds and kennel free lodging, plus other amenities like aromatherapy and soundscapes. The Skippers — Skiptown is the result of the entrepreneurial spirit of Meggie Williams. After graduating from Chapel Hill, Williams moved to New York City, where she pursued a corporate career. However, Williams soon discovered that she found far more joy caring for pets than spending hours at a desk. She opened a dog walking business before life’s twist and turns brought her back to North Carolina, where she started Skipper.

“I've loved animals my whole life,” Meggie says. “I knew there were more dog parents like me who were looking for the kind of quality care and convenience from their pet service that I was. That's why I started the company: to offer the kind of service we had been looking for for our two dogs but couldn't find.” Skiptown is powered by a team of pet-loving professionals, called Skippers, who must demonstrate trustworthiness, reliability, and strong judgment during the interview process. Additionally, they must complete ten hours of classroom and field training before they are entrusted to care for patrons’ furry family members. When it comes to convenience and care, the team has already thought of everything: Skiptown can be enjoyed with a day pass, month pass, or annual membership purchased through the Skiptown app. Members enjoy access to member-only events, discounts, and three day passes to share with friends. “The app supports our entire customer experience,” Meggie explains. “It's where you create your pet's profile, update vaccine information, check into the bar, book visits, receive twice daily visit reports... There's a photo gallery in our app of all the photos from your dog's visit reports.” At this unique and very welcome addition to South End, tails are always wagging and paws are tapping. Except when it’s bath time. Williams is actively looking at sites in Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Austin, and DC for the second to sixth locations, targeting to be operational in the second location by fall of 2021. What exactly is the work relationship like for you two? Jenna: It's the perfect husband/wife work relationship. We're together but we're not! Our roles are different enough that we collaborate when we need to and can also give each other the space and trust to do what we do best. How would you describe the style or aesthetic of Grande? Jenna: I would say the style is classic modern. It's a clean aes-

thetic that still feels warm and inviting. We mostly build in Charlotte, but have expanded to Lake Norman at times and would always explore the opportunity to build elsewhere. Tell us about the impetus behind Grande Custom. John: I always knew I wanted to own my own construction company and be a builder. 2007 presented an opportunity. Even during the worst economy in decades, I decided to run with it. Jenna, tell us about your staging work. Jenna: With a background in fashion and textile design, home staging and interiors was a natural progression. Staging is so much fun because it's an immediate gratification. A house can be transformed within half a day, and it satisfies my creative brain. I enjoy being able to take a beautiful house to the next level and give an aspirational vision to homeowners.

“At the end of the day, we love what we do and take a lot of pride in it.” John, tell us what your day to day work with Grande looks like now. How has that changed or evolved? John: I'm continually checking in with the project management team and office and doing field visits with homeowners. Talking with potential clients on new-builds, networking, and finding vacant property for custom specs is also always happening behind the scenes. I used to do everything. Now, I have a great team in place to communicate with subcontractors, run jobs, and manage the office. It frees up my time to talk with homeowners and be in the field, which is honestly what I love the best.

it still looks current when we look at photos. Scotland is another home that was gorgeous and allowed us to take some design risks that we still feel good about. What do you both love about the home industry? Why? Jenna: We love creating a beautiful product from the ground up. Also, clients are so educated now that it becomes a fun process to collaborate and feed off each other. The end result is usually something great. At the end of the day, we love what we do and take a lot of pride in it. What are some of the upsides of owning your own business, and what are the challenges? John: We have the freedom to choose and do what we want, but at the same time we hold all of the risk. But, I welcome it and wouldn't have it any other way!

What makes Grande unique? Jenna: It's powerful to be a builder/designer duo. I can help with the design details, inspiration, and general aesthetics. John can make all those ideas happen. Tell us about a few of your favorite or most memorable projects you've been a part of? Jenna: Our first on Shenandoah has a special place in our hearts. We built this craftsman bungalow eight years ago, but

When presented with this dining area, Lisa Sherry of Lisa Sherry Interieurs set to work applying her organic-modern aesthetic. Lisa focused her efforts on the entire first floor of the home to create more open feeling areas. She began by taking control of the color palette, applying a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore China White to the walls in every room. The result is a dining room with a neutral but elegant backdrop for the rest of her design decisions.

All of the furniture, flooring, textiles, and most accessories in the dining room are new, sourced by LSI. Summer Tubridy, the founder of Onyx Interiors, is a Charlotte-based interior designer who specializes in classic, timeless design in both her commercial and residential projects. This chic living space is the clubhouse located in The Mezzanine Apartments on Freedom Drive. Summer’s goal was to create a warm and inviting space for residents to enjoy and kick back with friends and family. She kept clean lines for a modern feel, while bringing in a pair of tufted velvet sofas and using elegant materials like marble and white oak adds that classic and timeless flair.

DreamKey Partners, the owners of Mezzanine, wanted a “wow” factor, but also a space that was timeless and durable. “We paneled the entry wall and layered it with metallic gold wallpaper, brought in large, yet simple chandeliers, installed floor to ceiling drapery for a sense of grandeur and elegance, and a double sided shiplap wall to give privacy on the lounge side that also houses a fireplace with a jaw dropping marble surround,” Summer shares. A LAKE HOUSE FULL OF DRAMA Discover how Sandy Kritzinger of Collaborative Interior Design created an eye-catching house that still found a way to feel like home. words LIZ A CARR ASQUILLO / photos TIFFANY RINGWALD

People love looking at professionally designed houses for a reason—they push the boundaries of how a home can look in a way that’s different from what’s seen in the average home. So different, in fact, that one could even forget people are meant to live there. Fortunately, there are many designers who know how to balance the creation of a stunning house with the practical needs of a home. Sandy Kritzinger of Collaborative Interior Design is one such designer. Her work on this Meta Road lake house in Cornelius exemplifies what it means to bring a client’s vision to life in a way that still serves any functional needs. “When talking to new clients,” says Kritzinger, “the first question I ask is what they’re looking to achieve. From there, we talk about design, style, and direction.” For the Cornelius lake house, her client landed on an overall aesthetic that Kritzinger dubbed “contemporary casual.”

Originally built in 1995, this 2,650-square-foot house needed some clear updates to reach the contemporary status that the client was looking for. With three bedrooms, a bonus room upstairs and a master bedroom downstairs, there was plenty of space to work through. Part of working toward that look came from the balance of the bold with the comfortable. The all-black exterior of the house immediately draws the eye, especially against the vibrant greenery of the grass and trees. The hot pink front door and single exposed beam served as the only color breaks across the house, and they each worked beautifully as focal points. The front door does more than serve as a pop of color. The Dutch-style door allows those at home to let in natural light and fresh air while keeping the bottom half of the door securely shut for any of the client’s three dogs roaming around.

HOME & DESIGN

This was the first of many interior decisions made in order to make sure the house worked for the client as a real home. “We used practical materials that hold up to kids and dogs,” says Kritzinger. “The living room sofa is dog-friendly leather, and we installed hardwoods in most of the downstairs level for its durability and easy cleanup.” Kritzinger kept the house cohesive by focusing on a clean color palette. Stepping through the front door brings guests into the white-walled foyer with light, earthy hardwood floors. These colors flow into the open kitchen, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and a direct view of the outdoor sunroom. The large amount of natural light, coupled with the light colors, gives the kitchen an airy, inviting feeling. The white walls continue throughout the home, broken up only by the deep navy in the office and the charcoal black accenting the master bedroom. To keep the space rooted in the

casual part of contemporary casual, Kritzinger also grounded the house with neutral wood tones and warm colors. Because the client wanted to take advantage of the excellent weather North Carolina is known for, Kritzinger made sure to weave the contemporary casual look throughout the backyard, as well. The charcoal black exterior color wraps around the side of the raised porch, giving it a two-toned effect when paired with the light-colored wood. Complete with its own kitchen and dining area, this deck space makes it easy to entertain outside. Lake Norman One of North Carolina’s largest lake is mere minutes from the Queen City. Lake Norman is a summer playground offering a wide array of activities for visitors and locals alike. Hop in a boat and carve through Norman’s many coves atop a pair of water skis, or refuel at one of the areas many lakefront restaurants like Joe and Katy Kindred’s Hello, Sailor. Jordan Lake The undeveloped banks of this lake make for a restful retreat for the more rustic traveler. Stay on one of the many campgrounds for constant communing with nature and quick lakeside access. Pass an afternoon on the Bald Eagle Observation Deck, keeping an eye out for America’s regal representative. Finally, for a change, carve out time for a meal at the iconic and elegant Fearrington House Restaurant, just 20 minutes north of Jordan Lake near Pittsboro. Lake Marion South Carolina’s Lake Marion is a fisherman’s dream, positioned halfway between Columbia and Charleston. Drop a line for largemouth bass, white perch, striped bass, white bass, crappie, channel catfish, bream, redear sunfish, and the Arkansas blue catfish. However, keep an eye out for alligators: over a hundred call Lake Marion and the surrounding Santee National Wildlife Refuge home.

Lake Jocassee Lake Jocassee rests at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the shadows of South Carolina’s Jocassee Gorges. The lake is fed by cool, clear river water that streams down the mountains and into the lake, in some cases via waterfall. Accessible only via Devils Fork State Park, the famed filming location of The Hunger Games, Lake Jocassee offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Spend a few days in this hidden world, and stay at Three Points View, a luxury mountain retreat surrounded by the beauty of the Jocassee Gorges. High Rock Lake Just an hour from the center of Charlotte, High Rock Lake is one of the largest lakes in North Carolina and is just north of Uwharrie National Forest. It’s the perfect destination for a getaway by virtue of its many boating opportunities and location smack dab in the middle of North Carolina’s wine country. Lake Glenville Lake Glenville has a few differentiating features, including its status as the highest lake east of the Mississippi and its location within a mountain forest, and boasts a little something for everyone: boat rentals, waterfalls, a sandy beach, and plenty of fishing (expect to catch large and smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, crappie, rainbow and brown

trout, large brim, and a few catfish). Lake Glenville is a quick half hour from quaint Highlands, NC, so plan to spend the night at the charming Old Edwards Inn and Spa. Nantahala Lake The Nantahala National Forest is one of the most beautiful corners of North Carolina. Better known for the surrounding peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains and its exceptional whitewater rafting, this area keeps one of its treasures more secret: drive to the top of the Nantahala Gorge and you’ll find a deep, blue pool of crisp lake water. Nantahala Lake is a scenic oasis perfect for both relaxation and play.
