No. 81 I really cannot believe that it's already December and the holidays are here. It happened so quickly. Summertime seems like yesterday, and maybe that's because until recently, the weather has been very warm. But, after a truly vibrant fall here in the Carolinas, the most wonderful time of the year is now upon us. Lauren Bolshakov is an artist working and living in Charlotte, NC. There are many different inspirations that appear in her work, including themes of movement from her love of dancing as well as collected nature. You will notice the passionately rendered linework and soft colors in each of Lauren’s paintings depicting landscapes, people, and florals.

We talked to Lauren about her process, her life here in the Carolinas, and her inspirations when she is working on a new painting.

What is your background as an artist? How did you get into creating?

I’ve always been drawn to all forms of art but painting was my first love. I remember my first art class where I played with “real art supplies'' and being in complete heaven. I started professionally painting part-time in 2009 and transitioned to painting fulltime in 2014. I’ve been so fortunate to have been able to study at Braitman Studio and The Art Students League, as well as taking workshops from incredible artists. I’m also grateful to the many ways that running a business has allowed me to be creative in different ways, such as website design, marketing materials, and social media.

What is your process when approaching a new project?

What inspires you most in the studio?

My process for a new piece is the same whether it’s a floral, landscape, abstract, or figure. I always put down an ink or acrylic layer, full of movement and transparency. It’s a perfect starting point to have something to respond to with the next layers. I love when the bottom layer shows through in a complementary shade and is juxtaposed in transparency to the rest of the textured paint.

What do you enjoy about working with different styles and textures?

I’m usually working on several pieces at a time, and I have stations set up in my studio for watercolors, oils, and acrylics. A lot of pieces start with an acrylic underpainting and finish in oil.

Having paintings in several states of completion lets me bounce around mentally which loosens up my brushwork in oils, helps me mix color better in acrylic, and be more creative in general.

How has living in The Carolinas affected your style?

We split our time between Charlotte and Lake Norman, so between running at the lake or greenways and being surrounded by beautiful architecture, gardens, and style in the city, I never

CULTURE lack inspiration. We’re also just a car ride away from the mountains or beach — the outdoors have always been a huge source of inspiration. It’s a lovely place to be a painter!

Tell us about your background in dance. How do you see it related to or complementary to your art?

When I first started dancing, I immediately painted dancers. The impression dance has left on my work has gotten less representative and displays itself more in my linework, the movement of the piece, and the push-pull effect of light and color. There’s this feeling in dance of your body in the space around you, and the connection between the music, yourself, and your partner that I want to share in my work.

Do you do custom work?

I do. There are many times when someone will love the composition of a piece but need to warm it up or cool it down, or they love a piece but it doesn’t fit their space. There are many reasons to commission custom work, and I’m happy to work with collectors to make it happen! Over the years, I’ve learned the questions to ask and tricks to streamline to process.

If you have a passion for fine art, than you remember the first original work you purchased as vividly as your first kiss, your first home purchase, or your first job. Amy Murphy Curlis, who founded Carolina Fine Art with her husband Shawn Curlis, bought her first original painting from Charlotte artist Terry Thirion. For Amy, it was a transformative experience that would have lasting effects.

Terry and Amy struck up a friendship, discussing the Queen City’s community of artists and art appreciators, bouncing ideas back and forth regarding the best way to cultivate more relationships between artists and viewers. Thus entered the seed of the idea that would become Carolina Fine Art. Carolina Fine Art opened its doors in the Dilworth neighborhood in the fall of 2021, creating a hyper-local haven for both

artists and art appreciators. Their message was simple: “We are more than a fine art gallery.”

HOMEGROWN TALENT — The gallery showcases local and regional artists who specialize in a variety of media and styles, from oil to acrylic to pottery and from abstracts to portraits to landscapes. “We look for exceptional talent and a variety,” says Amy. “We care about the quality of art but also the type of artist and that artist’s personal journey.”

Part of Carolina Fine Art’s mission is to unify local artists by connecting artists to one another. The gallery is operated by many of the local artists who showcase there, generating greater

overlap, participation, and camaraderie in the arts community.

Carolina Fine Art also provides Charlotte-based creators with a platform that was sorely missing from the Queen City.

“We have exceptionally talented local artists right here in town,” says Amy. “You shouldn’t have to drive to the beach or the mountains to buy their pieces.”

Artists who are currently participating in Carolina Fine Art include Angela Nesbit, Carol Mueller, John Komisin, Manuela Strada, and Ráed Al-Rawi.

Kelly Daniels is the owner and artist behind Cosmic Creativ, a handcrafted business of home goods made with resin art.

Daniels graduated from Florida A&M University in 2009 with a double bachelor’s in Architecture and Architectural Science. She moved to Atlanta and fulfilled her dream job at one of the top 35 architecture firms in the country. Life as an entrepreneur never crossed her mind, but now she says she couldn’t have even dreamt a life as beautiful as the one she now lives.

As a one-woman show, Kelly hand pours, trims, photographs, packages and ships every piece herself. She creates home essentials, from accent tables to cutting boards and serving trays. She has been a full-time entrepreneur for eight years, and has been doing full time resin art for the past three.

First off, what exactly is resin art?

Resin is a two-part material that when combined converts from a liquid to a solid. It’s a nearly indestructible material and food safe too! What I love most about resin is its fluidity, layering potential and high gloss properties.

How did you get started with resin art, and how did that translate into designing home goods?

As artists, we’re always taking inspiration from those before us.

I saw resin art long before I even knew what it was. I first remember seeing (what I now know was) a resin piece in a coffee shop down by the beach on the Gulf Coast, where I’m from. It wasn’t until about five years ago that I found resin and started to experiment. There was no turning back for me after that; it’s

How did you come up with the name “Cosmic Creativ”?

I’m a total space nerd. I even earned my wings as an Advanced Astronaut from the Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL! Adult Space Camp is a thing. It sets me apart, and I wanted my business to reflect that part of my life. It’s also a great excuse for me to nerd out and share space stuff with my clients.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

I’m constantly pouring, and I’m constantly experimenting. Home goods are a constant for me, which is nice. I mix it up with custom wall art, tables and new projects like stove top covers. I’ve been spending a lot of time in a shared workshop lately, too; it’s called Mass Collective. There, I have full access to large woodworking machinery, where I’m making larger furniture pieces with rare wood, and I am using resin in new and different ways.

As an artist, how do you push yourself to express your creativity in new and unique ways?

Pushing myself isn’t a problem. I’m constantly dreaming…

Why is it important for you to allow your clients to customize their purchases?

Art is personal! If we can incorporate your wedding colors or match a friend’s decor, then it means more to me, too.

Samantha Wood brings her clients the chance to create their dream dress, whether for a wedding, graduation, or simply to redesign a dress they already own. With plenty of creative inspiration from her family growing up, Sam started with creating her own prom dress and knew she had found her calling.

We got to know Sam a little better by asking her a few questions on her passion for dressmaking, and the hard work that goes into custom designs and alterations.

Having grown up with your mom as a hobbyist sewer and your godmother a seamstress, what drew you to their work and inspired you to pursue fashion?

I was surrounded by creativity growing up. Whether my mom was sewing dresses or my dad was renovating our house, I

picked up the ability to create anything I wanted. My godmother showed me style. She lived in a beautifully-decorated historic home that looked like a Southern Living magazine spread. She would let me tag along to her Neiman Marcus shopping adventures and treat me to special outings in D.C. that I would love to get dressed up for. I developed an appreciation for art, an eye for design, and a passion for fashion.

What drew you to Charlotte and starting your business here?

I used to roll my eyes when people said, "wrong turns lead you to the right places," until it happened to me. I never intended to live in North Carolina for long, but here we are seven years later. I love the versatility of this state, and I've been inspired by the creativity in Charlotte.

What triggered me to start my business here was seeing the success of fashion designers outside of NYC and LA. I was also a creative ticking bomb after suppressing my passion to design dresses for years. Life is too short to not do what makes you feel alive.

How would you describe your own style?

Eclectic, yet classic. My go-to look is distressed jeans and a bodysuit with a funky cut or an unexpected low back — then I'll throw on a blazer for a more sophisticated look. I'll also pair a basic dress with fun sneakers or a fun dress with basic sneakers. I'm all about style over fashion, so I try to stay away from trends and buy timeless pieces.

Who or what do you find inspires you to create the most?

I'm inspired by anything and everything, but most often by other dresses. Whether it's noticing a woman's dress in real life, scrolling through dresses on revolve.com, or seeing my favorite designers on Instagram, I often find myself subconsciously analyzing how I would design them differently.

What is your process for creating a dress?

I start by creating an inspiration board and sketching ideas.

Once I solidify the concept, I draw final sketches, think through the construction, and source materials. I then cre-

ate the dress with muslin, typically using the draping pattern design method. After I refine the fit of the mock-up dress, I make the real thing. If it's not perfect at first, I adjust it until my client is smiling.

What custom dress design would you say has been your personal favorite to make?

I've made custom wedding dresses for friends, and there's nothing quite like seeing someone you love walk down the aisle wearing something you put love into. I recently worked on a project with local stylist Stacee Michelle. Often, clients want me to make their vision a reality, which takes the fun out of designing. Stacee gave me her inspiration and let me run with it.

What advice would you offer to those looking to start their own creative side hustle?

I'm still trying to figure out a balance and how to reach my own goals. I will say though — don't do nothing, because you can't do everything.

Ten years ago, Wendy Fennell quit a job she loved in the fashion industry in order to be more present for her newly adopted son. The conclusion of one career opened the door for her to start another. She began offering interior design services as a side hustle before launching her own full-scale business Bohemian Bungalow design.

Why did you choose a bohemian style?

I have alway been drawn to boho interiors.

My aesthetic is eclectic and colorful but also with a lot of modern elements. Although my business name is Bohemian Bungalow, my project designs have always offered different styles from transitional to modern with lots of texture, color, and patterns.

Out of all the designs you have done, what was your favorite one?

That's a hard one! I just completed a fun project in the NoDa area and these clients were up for anything, so I had a ball with bold wallpaper choices, super colorful and geometric fabric, and funny lamps choices.

Savvy Giving By Design is a non-profit, national organization of professional interior designers coming together to create and design rooms for children and families in medical crisis. It is my honor to be the lead design firm for the Charlotte Chapter.

What was the hardest design you have ever done?

I just started to do some commercial projects and the rules are different. I wouldn’t say it’s harder but definitely a different challenge.

What approach do you use when working with customers?

I start with a discovery call for new clients then follow up with an in-home consultation where we walk their space, discuss styles, identify items that need to stay, and talk about budget.

It’s very important to convey how long projects will take. In these crazy COVID times, everything is taking way longer, and the delays and lead times on product and shipments are everchanging. We do the best we can, but regular communication and bi-weekly project updates with clients is essential.

What are your plans for the future of Bohemian Bungalow Design?

Summer Tubridy grew up in one of America’s most beautiful cities: Charleston, South Carolina. Immersed in the Holy City’s manicured gardens and surrounded by its classic, Southern architecture, Tubridy passed each day awash in aesthetic pleasure.

However, her access to these spaces was limited, gained through the home cleaning business she started with the help of her father at age 16. She scrubbed the nooks and crannies of waterfront mansions on Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, noting every remarkable design decision while also cutting her entrepreneurial teeth.

going to be just right to take a leap and start my own business. He advised that the longer I waited, the harder it would be to start from scratch on my own,” recalls Tubridy. “That gave me the courage and confidence I needed to bet it all on myself, and that has turned out to be the best decision I ever made.”

The first few years after Tubridy opened her design firm, Onyx Interiors, were, as she says, “terrifying.” Her first clients trickled in with worrying slowness. Rather than committing her resources to more marketing and networking, Tubridy resolved to focus instead on service, honing her personal and committed approach.

The client experience at Onyx Interiors begins with an interview, during which Tubridy digs into client preferences: What do they love? What are their non-starters?

From there, she creates. Summer begins with a cleanlined aesthetic, then weaves in the client’s style—whether it’s modern, traditional, or contemporary—with one exception: “I do think it’s important to push people out of their comfort zone with a bold selection or design concept they wouldn’t have ever considered picking themselves.

When doing this, I’m always prepared with a ‘safe’ back up option, but more often than not, the client gets excited about the bolder option,” says Tubridy. She works with the client to revise her initial design drafts, until the design is perfectly attuned to both the client’s aesthetic and their functional needs.

This process, combined with Tubridy’s stunning eye for design, aesthetic adaptability, and ability to create welcoming spaces with sophisticated flair, could have been the sole drivers of her success. However, what truly sets her apart as a designer in the Charlotte market derives from those younger years spent amid the romantic streets of Charleston.

“When I was growing up, we didn’t have much. Both of my parents were service workers; my mother provided in-home care for elderly patients, and my father was a fireman and first responder. They worked so hard caring for others just to provide for me and my sister. They instilled that work ethic and care for others in me.”

This is a palpable part of doing business with Summer Tubridy. Clients feel cared for—heard, understood, and at the end of the project as though they have received the best possible service.

Layton Campbell, of JLayton Interiors, knows a bedroom should be restful but never plain.

Completed in the Quail Hollow club area, this master suite has beautiful views of the golf course. Layton wanted to enhance, not detract, from that and so he created a romantic, serene escape from everyday work and life responsibilities for his client.

In the room, the high vaulted ceilings allow for expansive windows and light, which enabled Layton to source the stunning, custom Christopher Boots light fixture of aged brass and

rock crystal. The French reclaimed hardwoods add warmth and grounding to the space. The entire space is wrapped in a muted mauve, shimmery Phillip Jeffries wallcovering.

“I wanted to mix layers of texture and materials that would evoke a sense of calm,” said Layton.

Danielle Knox, of Danielle Knox Interiors, is an architectural interior designer based in Davidson, North Carolina. She specializes in residential interior design.

With this 2020 project, Danielle’s clients were a large, close knit family who love to entertain for special occasions and holidays. Danielle added ample storage for multiple sets of china and crystal, and created a welcoming space that is light, airy and balanced with classic, lasting design elements.

“I wanted them to have that feeling of a respite to exhale and

relax as they walk into their beautiful home,” Danielle shares.

The large, open linear lighting fills the 12-foot tall space beautifully without feeling too heavy, and the sisal wrapped walls lend an extra nod of attention to the added trim and window wall details. The chairs and buffet are Tritter Feefer, the chandelier is Visual Comfort from Darnell & Co., Elizabeth Bradford painted the watercolor art, the custom cabinetry is from The Hartley Group, Cornelius NC, and the sisal wallcovering is Thibaut.

Theory Design Studio combines an eye for artful interiors alongside the team’s love and connection to the Charlotte area. Theory offers full design services for both residential and commercial projects, in addition to the team’s emphasis on working with homebuilders to design and merchandise fresh and timeless model homes.This beautiful, airy home—completed in Denver in early 2021—focused around the overarching goal of creating a layered, Bohemian setting that is grounded in natural elements and neutral colors.

According to owner Emily Hudgens, this particular client wanted the space to have its own personality while also incorporating carefully curated pieces throughout the home.

“It was important to create a comfortable space but with a dynamic edginess to house key décor pieces and art,” Emily explained. “Functional accent seating and casegood pieces were also an important element to this design.”

There’s something undeniably special about living in an older home. Created with longevity in mind, these homes are often built with strong structures that were simply imbued with resilience and charm. Those attributes are precisely what drew the clients of Senior Designer Amy Vermillion to this project.

Originally built in the 1920s, the Myers Park-area house had already gone through its fair share of renovations. Builder Bryan Gerrard took on the latest structural remodel and Amy Vermillion Interiors led the interior design charge.

By completely transforming several rooms, updating the light fixtures and adding a few special touches, Vermillion turned the home into a space that honors its roots while encompassing a strong, modern look.

Stepping through the front door into the home exemplifies this right away: The light foyer features old-fashioned wainscoting, as well as thick door frames and crown molding.

These features juxtapose nicely with the geometric lighting that gives the space a more modern feel.

The creamy whites from the foyer continue throughout the living room, serving as a stark contrast to the room’s mantel

and fireplace. The unfinished wood gives the mantel a rustic look, while the black tile makes the feature stand out. The same color is used on the couch—one that can withstand all kinds of family spills and messes.

“We chose fabrics that are family-friendly but look great,” says Vermillion. “They have built-in stain resistance but still have a luxurious hand. The same went for all the rugs and carpets. There is no point having decorative elements that won’t hold up with kiddos!”

Because this house has young children, Vermillion applied the idea of family-friendly to more than just upholstery choices. She wanted the family’s children to feel like the house was designed for them, too.

“For the kids’ rooms upstairs, we chose navy for the son and a lively pink and green for their daughter,” says Vermillion.

“The rooms are really cute and reflect their personalities.”

In contrast to the kids’ rooms, the owner’s suite is more subdued. By using light, natural colors with a soft peach hue on the bed, the room feels airy and relaxing.

Back downstairs, those light colors begin to mingle much more closely with the darker greys and blacks of the living

HOME & DESIGN room. The kitchen, for example, features black cabinets and dark wood for the island paneling.

“I decided to do the Fine Paints of Europe black high gloss for some drama,” recalls Vermillion. “The light fixtures also add to the updated vibe of the kitchen.”

In the office, Vermillion turns those dark colors into the dominant palette in a way that still feels soft. She also designed built-ins made to look original to the home.

Still, the major modifications of the office paled in comparison to the house’s basement-turned-Speakeasy. The clients started with the simple idea of creating a space to watch their favorite sports. From there, Vermillion helped them design a bar and entertainment area that made use of the basement’s timeless look.

“Our job as designers is to guide our clients,” says Vermillion. “Yes, push them a little outside their comfort zone, but find solutions and selections that accomplish that.”

The antique brick tunnel entrance leads into a bar that’s complete with custom shelving and cabinets, as well as an antimicrobial Dekton countertop.

“The walls are done in a burnished oak, and the look is cozy and warm,” notes Vermillion. “While I love light and airy, there is nothing like a moody space to have a bourbon, smoke a cigar and watch a football game.”

Through strong collaboration with her clients, Vermillion reimagined nearly every inch of the basement—and the rest of the Sherwood House, for that matter.
