NOTE
No. 81 I really cannot believe that it's already December and the holidays are here. It happened so quickly. Summertime seems like yesterday, and maybe that's because until recently, the weather has been very warm. But, after a truly vibrant fall here in the Carolinas, the most wonderful time of the year is now upon us. For this holiday issue, we wanted to focus on some of our favorite things this season brings: delicious food, philanthropy, festive places, and, of course, gifts for the friends and family. That's exactly what you will find in our Exclusives section. Everyone loves enjoying tasty treats during the holidays so we decided to share our favorite places in the Queen City to get cookies, pies, cakes, and more. We share the many local charities that you can donate to this holiday season. We also include our top list of Carolina hotel destinations — from the Lowcountry to the Blue Ridge — where you can visit to have a truly amazing holiday stay. Lastly, we round out our features with some of the very best local shops you should support when buying gifts for friends and family. On top of all that holiday goodness we also talk with artist Lauren Bolshakov, see the art of Cosmic Creativ, savor some amazing food at SouthPark's Steak 48, and sample some cocktails from The Jimmy and The Stanley. We meet Wendy Fennell of Bohemian Bungalow Design, step inside a JLayton Interiors-designed bedroom, and tour a home beautifully finished by Amy Vermillion Interiors and Gerrard Builders. In our travel section we see the lights at Chetola, visit a Banner Elk winery, take a short drive to Greenville, SC and warm up with some healthy activities in Hilton Head. It's truly an issue that will put you in the spirit of the season. We hope you enjoy, and we will see you in 2022. Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Art Director Brett Barter, Publisher

Lauren Bolshakov is an artist working and living in Charlotte, NC. There are many different inspirations that appear in her work, including themes of movement from her love of dancing as well as collected nature. You will notice the passionately rendered linework and soft colors in each of Lauren’s paintings depicting landscapes, people, and florals. We talked to Lauren about her process, her life here in the Carolinas, and her inspirations when she is working on a new painting. What is your background as an artist? How did you get into creating? I’ve always been drawn to all forms of art but painting was my first love. I remember my first art class where I played with “real art supplies'' and being in complete heaven. I started professionally painting part-time in 2009 and transitioned to painting fulltime in 2014. I’ve been so fortunate to have been able to study at Braitman Studio and The Art Students League, as well as taking workshops from incredible artists. I’m also grateful to the many ways that running a business has allowed me to be creative in different ways, such as website design, marketing materials, and social media.
30 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
What is your process when approaching a new project? What inspires you most in the studio? My process for a new piece is the same whether it’s a floral, landscape, abstract, or figure. I always put down an ink or acrylic layer, full of movement and transparency. It’s a perfect starting point to have something to respond to with the next layers. I love when the bottom layer shows through in a complementary shade and is juxtaposed in transparency to the rest of the textured paint. What do you enjoy about working with different styles and textures? I’m usually working on several pieces at a time, and I have stations set up in my studio for watercolors, oils, and acrylics. A lot of pieces start with an acrylic underpainting and finish in oil. Having paintings in several states of completion lets me bounce around mentally which loosens up my brushwork in oils, helps me mix color better in acrylic, and be more creative in general. How has living in The Carolinas affected your style? We split our time between Charlotte and Lake Norman, so between running at the lake or greenways and being surrounded by beautiful architecture, gardens, and style in the city, I never

CULTURE lack inspiration. We’re also just a car ride away from the mountains or beach — the outdoors have always been a huge source of inspiration. It’s a lovely place to be a painter! Tell us about your background in dance. How do you see it related to or complementary to your art? When I first started dancing, I immediately painted dancers. The impression dance has left on my work has gotten less representative and displays itself more in my linework, the movement of the piece, and the push-pull effect of light and color. There’s this feeling in dance of your body in the space around you, and the connection between the music, yourself, and your partner that I want to share in my work. Do you do custom work? I do. There are many times when someone will love the composition of a piece but need to warm it up or cool it down, or they love a piece but it doesn’t fit their space. There are many reasons to commission custom work, and I’m happy to work with collectors to make it happen! Over the years, I’ve learned the questions to ask and tricks to streamline to process. Communication is key! info laurenbolshakov.com / @laurenbolshakovart

A RTIST-CEN T R IC, A RTIST-OPER AT ED Carolina Fine Art opens its doors in Dilworth. words ELEANOR MERRELL
If you have a passion for fine art, than you remember the first original work you purchased as vividly as your first kiss, your first home purchase, or your first job. Amy Murphy Curlis, who founded Carolina Fine Art with her husband Shawn Curlis, bought her first original painting from Charlotte artist Terry Thirion. For Amy, it was a transformative experience that would have lasting effects. Terry and Amy struck up a friendship, discussing the Queen City’s community of artists and art appreciators, bouncing ideas back and forth regarding the best way to cultivate more relationships between artists and viewers. Thus entered the seed of the idea that would become Carolina Fine Art. Carolina Fine Art opened its doors in the Dilworth neighborhood in the fall of 2021, creating a hyper-local haven for both

artists and art appreciators. Their message was simple: “We are more than a fine art gallery.” HOMEGROWN TALENT — The gallery showcases local and regional artists who specialize in a variety of media and styles, from oil to acrylic to pottery and from abstracts to portraits to landscapes. “We look for exceptional talent and a variety,” says Amy. “We care about the quality of art but also the type of artist and that artist’s personal journey.” Part of Carolina Fine Art’s mission is to unify local artists by connecting artists to one another. The gallery is operated by many of the local artists who showcase there, generating greater

overlap, participation, and camaraderie in the arts community. Carolina Fine Art also provides Charlotte-based creators with a platform that was sorely missing from the Queen City. “We have exceptionally talented local artists right here in town,” says Amy. “You shouldn’t have to drive to the beach or the mountains to buy their pieces.” Artists who are currently participating in Carolina Fine Art include Angela Nesbit, Carol Mueller, John Komisin, Manuela Strada, and Ráed Al-Rawi.

CONNECTING CURATORS AND COLLECTORS — For Amy, fine art extends beyond the finished piece; the canvas hanging on your bedroom wall or the pottery displayed on an office bookshelf. Each piece tells a story, and the artist is a critical part of that story. When that story is known by the collector, Amy believes the piece becomes exponentially more meaningful. To facilitate more interactions between Carolina Fine Art customers and featured artists, the gallery hosts events monthly.

These events vary from open houses to group-specific gatherings, but always aim to build stronger relationships in the local arts community while simultaneously obtaining greater exposure. When Amy thinks about her gallery’s role in the Charlotte art scene, she knows two things are true: “Carolina Fine Art fills a need and taps into an under-developed resource.” As the gallery continues to lend a hand in growing the Charlotte arts community, the need for their local-first approach will only expand, which is why we’ll be keeping an eye on this newest addition to the Dilworth neighborhood. info carolinafineart.com @carolina.fineart

Artist Kelly Daniels uses resin art to create giftable and customizable home goods products. words KENNEDI JACKSON
Kelly Daniels is the owner and artist behind Cosmic Creativ, a handcrafted business of home goods made with resin art. Daniels graduated from Florida A&M University in 2009 with a double bachelor’s in Architecture and Architectural Science. She moved to Atlanta and fulfilled her dream job at one of the top 35 architecture firms in the country. Life as an entrepreneur never crossed her mind, but now she says she couldn’t have even dreamt a life as beautiful as the one she now lives. As a one-woman show, Kelly hand pours, trims, photographs, packages and ships every piece herself. She creates home essentials, from accent tables to cutting boards and serving trays. She has been a full-time entrepreneur for eight years, and has been doing full time resin art for the past three.

First off, what exactly is resin art? Resin is a two-part material that when combined converts from a liquid to a solid. It’s a nearly indestructible material and food safe too! What I love most about resin is its fluidity, layering potential and high gloss properties. How did you get started with resin art, and how did that translate into designing home goods? As artists, we’re always taking inspiration from those before us. I saw resin art long before I even knew what it was. I first remember seeing (what I now know was) a resin piece in a coffee shop down by the beach on the Gulf Coast, where I’m from. It wasn’t until about five years ago that I found resin and started to experiment. There was no turning back for me after that; it’s

“Pushing myself isn’t a problem. I’m constantly dreaming.” been all resin ever since! It’s an expensive material though, and wall art or tabletops can be a real commitment. Home goods were a great way for me to make my art more giftable. Most of my boards are under $100. How did you come up with the name “Cosmic Creativ”? I’m a total space nerd. I even earned my wings as an Advanced Astronaut from the Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL! Adult Space Camp is a thing. It sets me apart, and I wanted my business to reflect that part of my life. It’s also a great excuse for me to nerd out and share space stuff with my clients. What does a typical work day look like for you? I’m constantly pouring, and I’m constantly experimenting. Home goods are a constant for me, which is nice. I mix it up with custom wall art, tables and new projects like stove top covers. I’ve been spending a lot of time in a shared workshop lately, too; it’s called Mass Collective. There, I have full access to large woodworking machinery, where I’m making larger furniture pieces with rare wood, and I am using resin in new and different ways. As an artist, how do you push yourself to express your creativity in new and unique ways? Pushing myself isn’t a problem. I’m constantly dreaming… Why is it important for you to allow your clients to customize their purchases? Art is personal! If we can incorporate your wedding colors or match a friend’s decor, then it means more to me, too. Where would you like to see Cosmic Creativ in the next five years? Dare I dream to have my own store?! Goodness, that would be incredible. info cosmiccreativ.com @cosmiccreativ

Samantha Wood brings her clients the chance to create their dream dress, whether for a wedding, graduation, or simply to redesign a dress they already own. With plenty of creative inspiration from her family growing up, Sam started with creating her own prom dress and knew she had found her calling. We got to know Sam a little better by asking her a few questions on her passion for dressmaking, and the hard work that goes into custom designs and alterations. Having grown up with your mom as a hobbyist sewer and your godmother a seamstress, what drew you to their work and inspired you to pursue fashion? I was surrounded by creativity growing up. picked up the ability to create anything I wanted. My godmother showed me style. She lived in a beautifully-decorated historic home that looked like a Southern Living magazine spread. She would let me tag along to her Neiman Marcus shopping adventures and treat me to special outings in D.C. that I would love to get dressed up for. I developed an appreciation for art, an eye for design, and a passion for fashion. What drew you to Charlotte and starting your business here? I used to roll my eyes when people said, "wrong turns lead you to the right places," until it happened to me. I never intended to live in North Carolina for long, but here we are seven years later. I love the versatility of this state, and I've been inspired by the creativity in Charlotte.

What triggered me to start my business here was seeing the success of fashion designers outside of NYC and LA. I was also a creative ticking bomb after suppressing my passion to design dresses for years. Life is too short to not do what makes you feel alive. How would you describe your own style? Eclectic, yet classic. My go-to look is distressed jeans and a bodysuit with a funky cut or an unexpected low back — then I'll throw on a blazer for a more sophisticated look. I'll also pair a basic dress with fun sneakers or a fun dress with basic sneakers. I'm all about style over fashion, so I try to stay away from trends and buy timeless pieces. Who or what do you find inspires you to create the most? I'm inspired by anything and everything, but most often by other dresses. Whether it's noticing a woman's dress in real life, scrolling through dresses on revolve.com, or seeing my favorite designers on Instagram, I often find myself subconsciously analyzing how I would design them differently. What is your process for creating a dress? I start by creating an inspiration board and sketching ideas. Once I solidify the concept, I draw final sketches, think through the construction, and source materials. I then cre-

ate the dress with muslin, typically using the draping pattern design method. After I refine the fit of the mock-up dress, I make the real thing. If it's not perfect at first, I adjust it until my client is smiling. What custom dress design would you say has been your personal favorite to make? I've made custom wedding dresses for friends, and there's nothing quite like seeing someone you love walk down the aisle wearing something you put love into. I recently worked on a project with local stylist Stacee Michelle. Often, clients want me to make their vision a reality, which takes the fun out of designing. Stacee gave me her inspiration and let me run with it. What advice would you offer to those looking to start their own creative side hustle? I'm still trying to figure out a balance and how to reach my own goals. I will say though — don't do nothing, because you can't do everything.

It’s possible to dine at Steak 48 every day for a year and never sit in the same spot twice. With 11,500 square feet and 400 seats to choose from, Steak 48 didn’t come to Charlotte to play around. Almost a year has passed since Steak 48 opened its doors in December 2020. Since then, the restaurant has held true to its commitment to providing an experience ripe with choices. This commitment is predicated on the belief that fine dining means something different to everyone - even to the same person at different moments. That’s why, at Steak 48, you won’t find a large, open dining area. Instead, you’ll discover a collection of intimate spaces, one of which may offer the quiet privacy perfect for a date while another might exude the kind of energy that befits a special occasion. “It's all about having lots of comfortable, welcoming options,

so that no matter what brought you to Steak 48, you say to yourself, ‘You know, I'm in the right place. This is exactly where I want to be,’” says Chief Brand Officer Oliver Badgio. Choosing where to sit is just the beginning. Peruse the menu and you’ll find more than the typical steakhouse fare. Interesting appetizers like crispy shrimp deviled eggs, chicken fried lobster tails, and braised pork belly drizzled with local honey; creative side dishes like double baked truffle potatoes, corn creme brulee, and Alaskan king crab and rock shrimp mac and cheese; and strong seafood mains like Chilean sea bass and New Bedford sea scallops all vy for attention on the menu. That being said, Steak 48 is still a steak lover’s paradise. The restaurant has its own in-house butcher, which means

access to butcher’s cuts; named as such because they’re so delicious that butchers used to save these prize cuts for themselves. It also means that the chef and butcher can easily collaborate to ensure that each cut is the exact specification that meets or exceeds the Steak 48 standards. Steak 48 also serves Wagyu beef, uniquely tender and uniquely tasty, to ensure that the restaurant is providing steak lovers’ taste buds with an unrivaled experience. Executive Chef Heather King, formerly of Le Meridien, brings her creative twists, sophisticated palate, and exceptional culinary experience to the Steak 48 menu. “She's just dynamic,” gushes Badgio. “You know, I think the only thing bigger than her ability to deliver in the kitchen is her personality. She loves what she does. And she's just so darn good at it.” The creators of Steak 48 pulled out all of the stops when it came to developing a bar program worthy of its food menu. You’ll find not only 100 wines available by the bottle, but also 48 delectable, best-in-class, high-end wines available by the glass, ranging from very bold to very approachable.

Steak 48’s hand-crafted, signature cocktails are made from local and seasonal ingredients whenever possible, rooting the restaurant more solidly in its Charlotte location. With other locations already established in Houston, Chicago, and Philadelphia, the owners of Steak 48, brothers Mike and Jeff Mastro were drawn to the Queen City in large part due to its strong community bonds, reinforced by philanthropy and intentional relationships. The Steak 48 team members intend to add to these bonds by dedicating time and resources to local charitable efforts. And, of course, by offering an outstanding culinary experience. “What we do is the totality of the experience. It's not just the food, or the atmosphere, or the luxury personal service, or the meticulously designed environment, it's wrapping it all into one,” says Badgio. “The truth is, at the end of the day, we're selling an experience with a side of steak and wine.” info steak48.com @steak48

Located in Banner Elk, NC, Eagles Nest Winery is a new destination in the mountains for wine enthusiasts. Nestled within the Eagles Nest community, the winery offers a wide variety of food and housemade wine for those visiting or living on-site. General Manager and winemaker Jeff Lemke runs the show, bringing the best wines he can make and pairing them alongside carefully curated menu items. Each and every wine comes from premium California grapes, so you can be sure you are getting the very best. “I’m passionate about the wine, and all the logistics that go into it. The distilling, blending, trying to get that balanced, full-bodied taste. I love everything about it.”

Eagles Nest, founded in 2003, is a community in Avery County that offers gorgeous homes near Pisgah National Forest, Sugar Mountain, and more. Each property offers beautiful views and an expansive range of custom and pre-built homes. Amenities include hiking trails, lodges, an upcoming fitness center, and of course, now the winery. Once you’ve arrived at the high-ceilinged, converted barn, you can expect varieties of cabernet, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and chardonnay. Using imported West Coast grapes and juices shipped in first-use barrels, each wine has a distinct taste, ranging from strong and full-bodied to crisp and refreshing. Everything is distilled, blended, and bottled in-house, giving the wines their own, unique Eagles Nest flavor. Surrounding the facility are custom wood tables and a large,

Renowned Parisian architect and designer Richard LaFond designed La Belle Helene’s breathtakingly gorgeous interior, setting the stage to serve equally breathtaking food. It’s difficult to identify standouts on a menu created by Top Chef alum Jamie Lynch, but the French Onion Soup just can’t be beat, especially on a nippy winter evening. Served in
a white crock, placed on a delicate doily and typically adorned by a strand or two of comté cheese draping elegantly over the rim, this French onion soup is pure gooey goodness. Before you leave one of Charlotte’s top French brasseries, expect to receive your bill tucked inside a copy of The Iliad, in homage to La Belle Helene’s namesake, Belle of Troy.

This holiday favorite is a labor of love requiring multiple days of forethought. To create their spin on the classic alcoholic eggnog, The Stanley whisks together eggs and sugar until thickened, then slowly adds milk, cream, brandy, rum, whiskey, sherry, and black walnut bitters. Separately, egg whites are
whipped until soft peaks form, then are folded into the first mixture. This is stored for several days at a cool temperature, then served in rocks glasses and topped with whipped cream, grated nutmeg, and vanilla wafers. The result is a warm hug of a cocktail with a frothy texture and creamy, rich flavor.

Ten years ago, Wendy Fennell quit a job she loved in the fashion industry in order to be more present for her newly adopted son. The conclusion of one career opened the door for her to start another. She began offering interior design services as a side hustle before launching her own full-scale business Bohemian Bungalow design. Why did you choose a bohemian style? I have alway been drawn to boho interiors. My aesthetic is eclectic and colorful but also with a lot of modern elements. Although my business name is Bohemian Bungalow, my project designs have always offered different styles from transitional to modern with lots of texture, color, and patterns.

Out of all the designs you have done, what was your favorite one? That's a hard one! I just completed a fun project in the NoDa area and these clients were up for anything, so I had a ball with bold wallpaper choices, super colorful and geometric fabric, and funny lamps choices. What work have you done with Savvy Giving By Design? What was the hardest design you have ever done? I just started to do some commercial projects and the rules are different. I wouldn’t say it’s harder but definitely a different challenge. What approach do you use when working with customers? I start with a discovery call for new clients then follow up with an in-home consultation where we walk their space, discuss styles, identify items that need to stay, and talk about budget. It’s very important to convey how long projects will take. In these crazy COVID times, everything is taking way longer, and the delays and lead times on product and shipments are everchanging. We do the best we can, but regular communication and bi-weekly project updates with clients is essential. What are your plans for the future of Bohemian Bungalow Design? We have a wallpaper collaboration with Mitchell Black Home and we are in the process of expanding the Bohemian Bungalow Collections. Summer Tubridy grew up in one of America’s most beautiful cities: Charleston, South Carolina. Immersed in the Holy City’s manicured gardens and surrounded by its classic, Southern architecture, Tubridy passed each day awash in aesthetic pleasure. However, her access to these spaces was limited, gained through the home cleaning business she started with the help of her father at age 16. She scrubbed the nooks and crannies of waterfront mansions on Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, noting every remarkable design decision while also cutting her entrepreneurial teeth. Years later, while working for a well-respected, Charlottebased architecture firm, Tubridy’s husband (then fiancé) gave Tubridy the push she needed to pursue her dream of running her own business. “He convinced me that the timing was never

going to be just right to take a leap and start my own business. He advised that the longer I waited, the harder it would be to start from scratch on my own,” recalls Tubridy. “That gave me the courage and confidence I needed to bet it all on myself, and that has turned out to be the best decision I ever made.” The first few years after Tubridy opened her design firm, Onyx Interiors, were, as she says, “terrifying.” Her first clients trickled in with worrying slowness. Rather than committing her resources to more marketing and networking, Tubridy resolved to focus instead on service, honing her personal and committed approach. The client experience at Onyx Interiors begins with an interview, during which Tubridy digs into client preferences: What do they love? What are their non-starters? From there, she creates. Summer begins with a cleanlined aesthetic, then weaves in the client’s style—whether it’s modern, traditional, or contemporary—with one exception: “I do think it’s important to push people out of their comfort zone with a bold selection or design concept they wouldn’t have ever considered picking themselves. When doing this, I’m always prepared with a ‘safe’ back up option, but more often than not, the client gets excited about the bolder option,” says Tubridy. She works with the client to revise her initial design drafts, until the design is perfectly attuned to both the client’s aesthetic and their functional needs. This process, combined with Tubridy’s stunning eye for design, aesthetic adaptability, and ability to create welcoming spaces with sophisticated flair, could have been the sole drivers of her success. However, what truly sets her apart as a designer in the Charlotte market derives from those younger years spent amid the romantic streets of Charleston. “When I was growing up, we didn’t have much. Both of my parents were service workers; my mother provided in-home care for elderly patients, and my father was a fireman and first responder. They worked so hard caring for others just to provide for me and my sister. They instilled that work ethic and care for others in me.” This is a palpable part of doing business with Summer Tubridy. Clients feel cared for—heard, understood, and at the end of the project as though they have received the best possible service. For Onyx Interiors, the bet on top quality service over marketing spends paid off when the firm launched in 2015. “Nearly all of the growth and success over the years has come organically,” says Tubridy. “And I never swayed from my original mission of ensuring every client feels as important as my first client.” info onyx-interiors.com / @onyx_interiors

Layton Campbell, of JLayton Interiors, knows a bedroom should be restful but never plain. Completed in the Quail Hollow club area, this master suite has beautiful views of the golf course. Layton wanted to enhance, not detract, from that and so he created a romantic, serene escape from everyday work and life responsibilities for his client. In the room, the high vaulted ceilings allow for expansive windows and light, which enabled Layton to source the stunning, custom Christopher Boots light fixture of aged brass and
rock crystal. The French reclaimed hardwoods add warmth and grounding to the space. The entire space is wrapped in a muted mauve, shimmery Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. “I wanted to mix layers of texture and materials that would evoke a sense of calm,” said Layton. The custom designed silk rug is by JLayton Interiors through Stark Carpet, the bedding is by SDH and Home Treasures from Bedside Manor, the sheer fabric is by Romo Zinc Collection and the custom leather ottoman is Nastasha Baradaran.

T
There’s something undeniably special about living in an older home. Created with longevity in mind, these homes are often built with strong structures that were simply imbued with resilience and charm. Those attributes are precisely what drew the clients of Senior Designer Amy Vermillion to this project. Originally built in the 1920s, the Myers Park-area house had already gone through its fair share of renovations. Builder Bryan Gerrard took on the latest structural remodel and Amy Vermillion Interiors led the interior design charge. By completely transforming several rooms, updating the light fixtures and adding a few special touches, Vermillion turned the home into a space that honors its roots while encompassing a strong, modern look. Stepping through the front door into the home exemplifies this right away: The light foyer features old-fashioned wainscoting, as well as thick door frames and crown molding. These features juxtapose nicely with the geometric lighting that gives the space a more modern feel. The creamy whites from the foyer continue throughout the living room, serving as a stark contrast to the room’s mantel
86 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
and fireplace. The unfinished wood gives the mantel a rustic look, while the black tile makes the feature stand out. The same color is used on the couch—one that can withstand all kinds of family spills and messes. “We chose fabrics that are family-friendly but look great,” says Vermillion. “They have built-in stain resistance but still have a luxurious hand. The same went for all the rugs and carpets. There is no point having decorative elements that won’t hold up with kiddos!” Because this house has young children, Vermillion applied the idea of family-friendly to more than just upholstery choices. She wanted the family’s children to feel like the house was designed for them, too. “For the kids’ rooms upstairs, we chose navy for the son and a lively pink and green for their daughter,” says Vermillion. “The rooms are really cute and reflect their personalities.” In contrast to the kids’ rooms, the owner’s suite is more subdued. By using light, natural colors with a soft peach hue on the bed, the room feels airy and relaxing. Back downstairs, those light colors begin to mingle much more closely with the darker greys and blacks of the living
HOME & DESIGN room. The kitchen, for example, features black cabinets and dark wood for the island paneling. “I decided to do the Fine Paints of Europe black high gloss for some drama,” recalls Vermillion. “The light fixtures also add to the updated vibe of the kitchen.” In the office, Vermillion turns those dark colors into the dominant palette in a way that still feels soft. She also designed built-ins made to look original to the home. Still, the major modifications of the office paled in comparison to the house’s basement-turned-Speakeasy. The clients started with the simple idea of creating a space to watch their favorite sports. From there, Vermillion helped them design a bar and entertainment area that made use of the basement’s timeless look. “Our job as designers is to guide our clients,” says Vermillion. “Yes, push them a little outside their comfort zone, but find solutions and selections that accomplish that.” The antique brick tunnel entrance leads into a bar that’s complete with custom shelving and cabinets, as well as an antimicrobial Dekton countertop. “The walls are done in a burnished oak, and the look is cozy and warm,” notes Vermillion. “While I love light and airy, there is nothing like a moody space to have a bourbon, smoke a cigar and watch a football game.” Through strong collaboration with her clients, Vermillion reimagined nearly every inch of the basement—and the rest of the Sherwood House, for that matter. From the airy foyer to the rustic warmth of the speakeasy, the Sherwood House successfully balances the classic nature of the 1920s with the modern aspects that make it feel like home for the family that resides in this design masterpiece. info amyvermillion.com / @amyvermillioninteriors gerrardbuilders.com / @gerrardbuilders

Less than 50 miles northeast of Savannah, Hilton Head Island pokes out from the South Carolina coast into the rolling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This longtime Lowcountry haven, known for its world-class golf courses and best-in-the-nation beaches, is the perfect place to retreat from the bustle of everyday life and luxuriate in nature’s beauty. For 40 years, Hilton Head Health has been aiding island-goers in their pursuit of a more balanced life. This world-renowned resort offers all-inclusive wellness services, as well as comprehensive weight loss programs, and has earned spots on “best of” lists from U.S. News & World Report to TripAdvisor, Forbes, Good Morning America, and many more. A tenet of Hilton Head Health’s wellness and weight loss programs is immersion, from a mental, emotional, and social perspective. To aid in this endeavor, Hilton Head Health designed a resort experience that guests won’t want to leave. The onsite, two-story Sweetgrass Inn, which opened in the spring of 2021, offers 30 sleek, modern, hotel-style rooms and

Both lodging options include amenities designed to help visitors achieve their wellness goals, such as common areas to foster camaraderie and accountability and access to a hot tub, heated pool, and wooden saunas. HHH’s main campus is where the bulk of the resort’s comprehensive wellness and weight loss programs take place. It’s a walkable, beautiful area with canopies of live oak and spanish moss. In addition to custom programs, HHH offers three signature wellness programs that help guests leave feeling rested, revived, and committed to lifelong wellness. For example, the LivingWell program motivates guests to prioritize their health, transforming their perspectives on nutrition and wellness. The WorkWell program is a unique and newer addition to the HHH dossier that gives guests the resources they need to reset their work-life balance and build healthier routines. personal change via a holistic approach. From a few days to an extended stay, HHH programs vary in length but always take the mental and emotional elements of weight loss as seriously as the physical elements. Because the HHH amenities serve the resort’s mission to help guests create healthy habits that will endure beyond the island, they extend past those of your typical resort. Program participants can eat three solid meals at HHH’s True Dining restaurant, which serves healthy gourmet cuisine—that is when guests are not nibbling in the resort’s test kitchen during a nutritional class or private healthy cooking lesson. Take your food indoors or outside in the greenery-filled courtyard. HHH not only offers a fitness center and pool, but also custom fitness plans and group classes that you can sign up for each day. Enjoy outdoor yoga, cardio and strength classes, or water aerobics. After a workout, guests can recover at HHH’s most gloriously indulgent amenity: The Indigo Spa. Ranked the number one hotel spa in America by USA Today, The Indigo Spa is the destination for workout recovery and stress relief. Rejuvenate with a facial or body treatment, indulge in a massage, or recenter in the spa’s relaxation room, which overlooks an oak-shaded lagoon. Guests will find the resort nestled in the Shipyard gated community, just over a mile away from the beach. The community, accessible to HHH guests, consists of 800 acres laced with walking and biking paths, dotted with top tier golf courses, and tennis courts. It’s the perfect retreat for anyone looking to reset or reinforce healthy habits or to experience a restful, yet healthful, getaway. info hhhealth.com @hiltonheadhealth

The Southeast has always had its fair share of quaint towns and bustling cities, all with their own unique identity and charm. Like many other towns in the Carolinas, Greenville, SC is still changing and growing, still trying to find what makes it stand apart from those around it—and that’s precisely why it’s such an exciting place to visit. As the city halfway between Charlotte and Atlanta, GA, Greenville has become a strong point of connection for both individuals, families and businesses throughout the South. Travelers to the city and even those just traveling through will experience a convergence of Southern cultures, all from people who are actively shaping what it means to be from Greenville. When visiting the city, travelers can expect to find a thriving downtown area with inviting shops. Greenville boasts an eclectic mix of local boutiques, nationally known brands, and antique shopping destinations. Cottage Grove Vintage Market, for ex-

ample, is a top choice for someone who wants to browse curated home décor with a vintage feel. This shop has everything from finished furniture to pillows and plant stands. Plus, it even sells home improvement materials like chalk paint and furniture wax so that anyone can feel empowered to create something that’s just right for their home. In addition to being an excellent shopping destination, Greenville also has a thriving arts and entertainment scene. This is due in part to organizations like the Greenville County Museum of Art and The Carolina Music Museum. These museums show off work by Southern artists and preserve the history of art and music throughout the area. Greenville’s family-friendly activities don’t stop there. Other notable spots include the Greenville Gem Mine and the Greenville Soy Candle Company for some hands-on enrichment. With a short drive to the outskirts of the city, families can even find

Because the Blue Ridge Mountains drop sharply into the Piedmont area right around Greenville, the surrounding forest has one of the highest concentrations of waterfalls along the Eastern U.S. Take a day trip to Reedy River Falls or spend a weekend hitting up every waterfall in Greenville County—either way, the view will be unforgettable. After a day of shopping and sight-seeing, no trip to Greenville is complete without a culinary tour. As a city with over 100 restaurants, Greenville truly has something for everyone. For a culinary experience that boasts both great flavors and a stunning view, Juniper is the place to go. This restaurant and bar overlooks Main Street from eight floors up and features inventive cocktails alongside fresh, flavorful dinner selections. Travelers can even take a taste of Greenville home with them by stopping at renowned gift and culinary shop The Cook’s Station. This locally owned space takes pride in serving the foodies of the Carolinas through curated local gifts, wines, and treats. Travelers can wind down their day by staying at the AC Hotel, a space that takes pride in the surrounding city by showcasing art from more than 35 local artists. The AC Hotel even features a wide variety of dining options, including the well-known Paloma and the rooftop restaurant, Juniper. From food and shopping to art and waterfall hunting, Greenville has a little bit of everything. To truly experience the exciting growth and rich history of Greenville, don’t hesitate to stop by. As the holidays draw near, Charlotte is abuzz with anticipation. The air is crisp, the houses are decorated, and the city is filled with an undeniable sense of holiday cheer. And in our opinion, nothing says holiday cheer quite like baked goods. Luckily for us, the Queen City doesn’t shy away

from delicious desserts. Charlotteans know how to do dessert and we do it well. So we’ve compiled a list of the best local spots to satisfy your sweet tooth this holiday season. Whether you’re looking for artisanal chocolates, Christmas morning doughnuts, or cookies for Santa—we’ve got you covered.
The Andersons Catering & Pies The Andersons Catering & Pies is a Charlotte gem that has been around for nearly 75 years. Once a beloved restaurant, the family-owned company now focuses on their catering business, with their Pecan Pie set as the star of the show. They’ve perfected their famous recipe (which hasn’t been changed since 1959) and have even dubbed it “the world’s best pecan pie.” Copain Nothing says the holidays quite like homemade pie. Thankfully, Copain, a cafe/bakery by Jim Noble of Rooster’s and Noble Smoke, has you covered. They offer an assortment of homemade pies and holiday treats, perfect for the upcoming festivities. They also have holiday dinner options available. Milkbread Milkbread, coming soon, is the newest concept from Joe and Katy Kindred, owners of the acclaimed Kindred restaurant. But besides their savory array of fried chicken, Smoked Deviled Eggs, and Sweet Potato Dumplings, the mill town-inspired restaurant also offers classic Southern-inspired desserts. We’re particularly fond of their Whoopie Pies and Banana Pudding.
DUCK DONUTS
The Batch House In 2020, a flash flood destroyed Cristina “Cris” Rojas-Agurcia’s treasured small batch bakery, The Batchmaker. After nearly a full year, it is back and better than ever. The new shop, now located in the Wesley Heights neighborhood, offers all the staples, including their Oatmeal Cream Pies, S’mores Brownies, and Chocolate Puddle Cookies. Their holiday cakes and pies tend to run out fast, so if you’re looking for a holiday dessert make sure to order ahead of time! They’re best known for their custom cakes and pastries, which they sell out of a 1961 Shasta Camper, lovingly named Selma. Their pastries are decadent, unique, and undoubtedly beautiful. During the holidays they sell specialty pies and cakes. Appalachia Cookie Company According to the folks at the Appalachia Cookie Company, they make their cookies like your grandma made them... i.e. fresh and from scratch.
