“We’re made to create, to find the media and inspiration and dive in.”

A

Art has and always will be about eliciting emotion. Whether it’s from the creator or audience, it’s the feelings behind it that truly make art special. Artist Eva Crawford takes this idea a step further, centering her artwork on the narrative elements involved to evoke a range of emotions in both herself and her audience. “As a visual storyteller,” begins Crawford, “I use realism to invite the viewer into the subject matter, which is either drawn with charcoal, collaged from found images, or painted with acrylic, oil, or watercolor.” Using these mediums, Crawford creates mostly portraits, doing her best to capture nuanced features and the full personalities of her subjects. But storytelling—and storytelling through artwork, for that matter—was not where

26 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Crawford first saw her career going. She’d been creating art as early as three and always wanted to do something creative, but she didn’t land on visual art right away. “After earning a BFA in Studio Art from UNC Chapel Hill,” says Crawford, “I designed furniture for a while. Then, I embraced an unexpected season teaching high school art.” As she watched the kids in her classes grow confident in their skills, she continued to do the same with her own artwork. Surrounding herself with so much growth over the years has led her to firmly believe that all humans have the capacity for creativity. “We’re made to create, to find the media and inspiration and dive in. Children are all unabashedly artists,” notes Crawford.

CULTURE

That’s why she implores any interested adults to explore art using their childlike imagination and to connect with others doing the same. Looking at art from this perspective has led Crawford to use art in a way that feels authentic to her true self. Her experiences as a creator, teacher, wife, and mother drove her to explore the stories behind the relationships in her life. These relationships included ones with her younger sister, her parents, and her relatives with mental health struggles. “The art I make is about relationships with those we love, with those we feel compassion, and with those whom we do not yet understand,” confirms Crawford. “These intimate interactions fuel my desire to give visual voice to fellow humans using portraiture. To be seen and to see others with understanding fosters ultimate healing among us.” A recent example of this healing narrative work comes in the form of a charcoal drawing series that she started on after her father passed away in early 2021. His absence drove her and her mother to look through old letters, pull out early black-and-white

“To be seen and to see others with understanding fosters ultimate healing among us.” photos, and share long-forgotten stories. This, in turn, led her to think about those left behind in photos and letters with no one left to remember them. That’s when Crawford decided to draw those subjects, replicating the black and white values of film photography on lifesized papers throughout her studio. Crawford’s work can be seen most easily on display at Dilworth Artisan Station, a hub for creatives and artists of all kinds to work and share their talents. “Dilworth Artisan Station provides an opportunity for interested collectors and art enthusiasts to freely roam the floors of the historic building,” says Crawford of the space. “They can view current artworks and chat with artists in their studios.” Crawford can be found working on commissions or other artwork in studio #22 alongside fellow artist Bridgette Martin. info evacrawfordart.com @evacrawfordart

A N A RT F U L R ENOVATION SOZO Gallery’s long-awaited renovations have allowed the staff to create a space that’s just right for artists and patrons alike. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO photos JAMEY PRICE

Charlotte’s contemporary art scene has been continuing to grow steadily for years, even among the many recent ups and downs that the city has gone through; one of the main reasons why is because of the dedicated local galleries putting in the work to spotlight new art. These galleries not only provide coveted show space, but also promote a variety of artistic creations by and for the community. One such gallery is SOZO, which continues to aid in uplifting Charlotte’s contemporary artists now that its latest renovations are complete. SOZO Gallery, currently owned by Hannah Blanton, has always run as a people-and-community-centric

space that exists to inspire soulful connections. They take pride in bringing emerging talent to a wide range of collectors in the Southeast and beyond. After operating for years out of the Truist Center in Uptown, the gallery decided to take a leap of faith and move to Plaza Midwood in November 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “The renovation was the necessary next step in ensuring that this new space met the needs of our staff, artists, and patrons,” says Blanton of the changes. These changes included new internal storage, as well as stateof-the-art lighting and a custom modular wall system. They even

built out an additional front entrance onto Pecan Avenue for ease of access. To put it all together, the gallery enlisted a variety of local businesses and vendors. The upfit was led by Royal Building Group with John Maloney of Good Manors, Inc. as the project manager. To achieve that specialty lighting, the gallery worked with Lighting and Bulbs Unlimited. The team at the vintage and custom furniture company Cope and Stick tied it all together with new accents. Still, Blanton was careful to make sure that these new renovations didn’t alter the actual soul of the space. She wanted to make sure that the physical aspects of the gallery reflected the approachable environment they’ve been known for. “The walls, paint, and accents are all fresh,” notes Blanton, “but guests and patrons can expect the same welcoming vibe

they’ve always anticipated and received from the SOZO team.” In addition to revealing the updated space, Blanton and the rest of her team have big plans for SOZO Gallery. Once 2022 begins, the gallery is going to boast a compelling program of exhibitions and events, many of which will highlight local artists. “We are so excited to continue championing our artists and bringing their important and inspired artwork to patrons in North Carolina and beyond,” says Blanton.

J EW EL RY T H AT E M POW ER S Jennifer Falcon sits down with us to talk about her jewelry-making journey, her artistic style, and her inspiration for Quad Espresso. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO

As a young entrepreneur, Jennifer Falcon is no stranger to taking risks and working hard. After moving to Charlotte on her own at age 21, she worked multiple jobs while keeping up with her newfound jewelry-making hobby on the side. To get the energy needed for her busy lifestyle, she began ordering the strongest drink on the Starbucks menu: a quad espresso. Made with four shots of espresso, this drink was designed to give customers the boost they needed for their day. When Falcon finally began managing her jewelry business full time, she knew that she wanted her brand to portray that same sense of everyday empowerment and enjoyment. She wanted her jewelry to complete an outfit in a way that made the wearer feel ready for the day. Now a celebrated local business, Quad

Espresso Jewelry is well-known for its clean designs and casual minimalist style. Falcon spoke with us about Quad Espresso’s beginnings and the creativity behind the business. Why did you find yourself gravitating towards jewelry making? Jewelry making wasn’t ever a passion of mine—it just happened to be the first hobby I took up that blossomed into a full-time business. My true passion is owning my own business. The freedom, challenges, successes (and many failures) is what I love the most. Of course, I also absolutely love what I do. The creativity and freedom in designing whatever my heart desires is a blessing, and having loyal customers support whatever I release is truly incredible.

"The creativity and freedom in designing whatever my heart desires is a blessing," What does your creative process look like? When it comes to designing new pieces, my process is a little messy and very “spur of the moment,” but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Whenever inspiration strikes, I just go with it… I’ll almost always stop what I’m doing to make an idea that has popped into my head. It’s just what works for me. I say I’m going to change my process, but I doubt that! What types of materials do you usually use? I strictly use gold-filled materials because it’s your best option after solid gold for quality and durability. Unlike gold-plated jewelry, it won’t turn your skin green. You can literally live in this jewelry and not worry about it being ruined a few weeks later. It’s also a great option for people with sensitive skin. That’s what I want to provide for everyone—affordable, long-lasting jewelry that you can feel good wearing!

38 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

What inspires your work? My travels inspire my work and style for sure! I pull so much inspiration from architecture because of the sharp lines and beautiful shapes all around. It can also be the simplest thing—I see a painting on the wall with abstract lines and shapes with beautiful colors, and that gives me so many ideas for earring designs! Where can we find your jewelry? My instagram @quadespressojewelry is where I post a lot of new releases and restocks. I have a full website with over 200 pieces. I also do local events such as Front Porch Sunday and Girl Tribe. You can also find my pieces at some local shops like Moxie Mercantile and Adair. And yes—I love creating custom orders. info quadespressojewelry.com / @quadespressojewelry

I

It’s no secret that Charlotte’s food scene has been growing extraordinarily fast over the years. As new restaurants and food concepts continue popping up, it can be hard to open something that truly makes a buzz. The restaurant group Noble Food & Pursuits hasn’t seemed to have that problem—especially not with their latest venture, The Jimmy Pastaria and Pizzeria. Originally opened in the early summer of 2021, The Jimmy is the sixth Charlotte restaurant spearheaded by Noble Food & Pursuits. This group is known for its dedication to not only providing a range of excellent cuisine, but also to supporting those in need throughout the community. They take their mission of “service beyond the table” seriously by partnering with local organizations and even operating one of their restaurants as a nonprofit. The Jimmy now joins in that mission as the restaurant group’s first step into the realm of Italian and French cuisine, all while honoring their focus of using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Taking inspiration from the relaxed bistros found along the Mediterranean coast, the menu features a range of casual dining options focused on light pastas and authentic 12-inch pizzas.

42 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Their dinner menu features well-known favorites like margherita pizza, as well as the restaurant’s specialty funghi pizza, also called “Jimmy’s Pie.” This pizza features Urban Gourmet Farms-roasted mushrooms, taleggio, and a balsamic reduction. On the pasta menu, guests will find all sorts of options centered around freshness of the Mediterranean, like the Penne Norma made with eggplant, tomato, basil and ricotta. The dinner menu also offers lighter options in the form of their salad selection. The Local Lettuce, for example, is made with pear-spiced hazelnuts and ricotta salata, all topped with a warm melon vinaigrette. Those looking for a little wine with their dinner will love the restaurant’s specialty selection of hand-chosen bottles imported from Italy, France, and Spain. These wines are kept in a temperature-controlled cellar at the restaurant. Unlike some of the other restaurants by Noble Food & Pursuits, The Jimmy also features dedicated breakfast and aperitivo menus. For breakfast, guests can expect fresh-baked muffins, croissants, doughnuts and more—but the menu will change daily. Fortunately, The Jimmy plans to keep a permanent menu of coffee drinks, including their signature Espresso Jimmy. This

Charlotte’s first cevicheria Calle Sol is a bright beacon on the corner of Commonwealth and Thomas Ave. Turquoise walls and yellow outdoor bar stools blaze brightly in the heart of Plaza Midwood, where Charlotte’s old staple the Penguin Drive-In formerly stood. Calle Sol has big shoes to fill, but it has the personality and culinary chops to become a staple in its own right. From FS Food Group (the Frank Scibelli-led group behind Yafo, Mama Ricotta’s, Midwood Smokehouse and Paco’s Tacos and Tequila) Calle Sol drastically diversifies the Latin food scene in Charlotte by serving traditional Cuban and Peruvian dishes with flair from Miami’s hottest Latin neighborhoods’ favorites. Inside, the walls are colorful and the music is dance-worthy. An open kitchen, airy booth-style seating, and colorful art and photographs contribute to a casual and lively atmosphere, where old friends can meet and new friends can be made.

FOOD & DRINK

The kitchen is headed by Chef Paul Cruz, whose grandmother taught him how tasty Salvadoran food can be. He has found an opportunity to introduce some of those flavors into Calle Sol’s dishes while still honoring the flavors of Cuba and Peru. He works alongside Sous Chef Alfredo Galarza, who attended university in Lima and brings his intimate knowledge of Peruvian cuisine to the Calle Sol kitchen. Together, Cruz, Galarza, and the FS Food Group team worked with Cuban celebrity chef consultant Ana Quincoces to design a menu that would satisfy the gastronomic homesickness of even the pickiest Latin American. In addition to using plantains, mamey, and other tropical fruits and vegetables imported especially for the kitchen, Calle Sol has partnered with Barbee Farms to grow aji amarillo—a yellow pepper that grows in abundance throughout Peru and is consequently incorporated into many Peruvian dishes (careful, this pepper has some kick!). The menu features mouthwatering entrees like the shrimp mojo (Argentinian red shrimp sauteéd with dry white wine, diced tomatoes, cilantro, mojo, and butter and served over

white rice), Cubano sandwiches, delicate ceviches (including an aji amarillo edition), and classic Peruvian sides like sweet plantains and boiled yuca. Additionally, a portion of the menu is dedicated to Chino-Latino dishes. In the mid-nineteenth century, Chinese and Japanese immigrants flocked to Latin America as part of the international labor migration and to fill a demand for labor left in the wake of slavery’s abolition. These immigrants shaped many Latin nations’ economies and culture, including culinary traditions. Calle Sol nods to this cultural fusion with dishes like chaufa and Cuban fried rice. Drinks at Calle Sol are playful and rum-heavy. The cocktail menu balances craft touches and classic recipes. Sangria, beer, and wine provide boozy alternatives to mixed drinks, while Cuban and Peruvian sodas allow for alcohol-free options. Stop in Plaza’s vibrant new hotspot for dinner any day of the week or for lunch Friday through Sunday. info callesolcafe.com @callesol

At Plant Joy in Camp North End, plant-based, sustainable cooking gets a Mediterranean flair and gorgeous presentation. Their falafel tower is an all-time best-seller for good reason: The deconstructed take on traditional falafel flavors looks like a colorful plate of healthy nachos, and tastes even better than it appears. Featuring a tall stack of homemade, freshly baked pita chips with chickpeas, beet slaw, a heaping portion of falafel crumble, a pickle plate, and smoked chickpea hummus, this is a dish you can split... or happily keep all to yourself. — info — plantjoyclt.com / @plant_ joy_clt

Hart White Interiors is a full service interior design firm based in Charlotte that tackles projects nationwide. The firm specializes in luxury residential design, assisting clients with interior project management, space planning, finish selection, furnishings, and styling for renovations, new builds, single room design, and full home design. Kirsten Hart White created Hart White Interiors two years ago in order to focus more on new build and renovation design projects. A North Carolina native, White earned her degree in interior design and architecture from Western Carolina University before working as a designer in Hickory among some of the best furniture and textile manufacturers in the world. This experience enabled White to forge connections that continue to benefit her clients today. She also developed an encyclopedic knowledge of the quality and durability of different types of furniture, so she can guide her clients toward the furniture selections that make the most sense given their lifestyle needs and preferred aesthetic.

60 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

For new builds and renovations, Kirsten sees her firm’s role as the bridge between the client and builder, as well as the client advocate. She possesses a strong understanding of the process used by architects and builders and uses that knowledge to create a seamless process and build a true team with dovetailing approaches. For other design projects, Kirsten prides herself on her ability to listen to the client and extract the design they didn’t even know they wanted. “It’s our job to get in the client’s head not only to determine what they want and like, but also to create a space that exceeds their expectations,” says Kirsten. Kirsten Hart White’s style is classic, timeless, and functional; a style influenced by her passion for European design and architecture. She believes that two critical components of a welldesigned room are that it is both functional and layered. Part of her process is that Kirsten dedicates lots of time to understanding her clients’ lifestyles and daily routines. Hart White just completed a vacation home in the Georgia swamps that her team fully furnished. It was, she said, one of

“It’s our job to get in the client’s head not only to determine what they want and like, but also to create a space that exceeds their expectations.” the most fun projects she has executed. Her client was a family that enjoys running dirt bikes through the swamps and exploring the outdoors, but equally loves to relax in style. The home, tucked away in the woods, looks like an old “swamp shack” from the outside but inside is absolutely beautiful. “We anticipated kids running in with mud up to their knees so we used leathers and woods that could be cleaned, as well as hair on hide rugs that could easily be cleaned from any mud stains,” explains Kirsten. The project was not only a dream to execute, but also exemplifies White’s ability to blend elegance and comfort, aesthetic and function. At Hart White Interiors, Kirsten benefits from the assistance of her team, Designers Kailee Toth & Gina Hopkins, Brandi Marlow and Elisha Lovejoy who manage all finance and expediting, Head of Sales Kristin Billy and Head of Branding & Marketing Kellyn Klug. With her team’s help, White has established a history of success at Hart White Interiors. She intends to preserve the firm’s reputation and continue growing the reach of this Charlotte-based business in the coming years. info hartwhiteinteriors.com @hartwhiteinteriors

If you thought about renovating your home in 2020 or 2021, you weren’t alone. Swaths of people across America upended their living spaces to accommodate what continues to be the “new normal.” Renovations require both a financial and an emotional investment, so how can you tell whether it’s right for you to take the plunge? Jena Bula of Delphinium Design has some advice: “Before you decide to renovate, ask yourself how long you plan to stay in your current home. If your answer is five-plus years, I say go for it! If it’s fewer, you may want to consider less expensive cosmetic updates so that you get a return on your investment when you sell.” Bula knows what she’s talking about. After founding her interior design business, Delphinium Design, in 2017, she has

64 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

won numerous best-of-the-best awards for both design and service. Her design firm is grounded in processes and systems that promote smooth and seamless client experiences. Potential clients receive the Delphinium Design client guide, which explains her ten-step process, so they can know what to expect at each stage of the design journey. Bula backs up her detailed processes with an impeccable eye for design. “My personal design aesthetic is influenced by a refined coastal color palette. My home is decorated by mixing materials and textures, and incorporates neutrals with layers of muted colors, specifically blues and greens. I gravitate toward clean lines and love mixing vintage and current pieces to create interest in my space,” says Bula.

However, what sets Bula apart as a designer is not her personal aesthetic, but her versatility and eagerness to please her clients. “As designers, it’s easy to gravitate towards your personal aesthetic, but I recognize that at the end of the day I go back to my home and my clients have to live in the space that I create for them. That’s why it’s crucial that I take the time to get to know my clients and understand how they live and function in their space,” explains Bula. Bula crafts interiors for her clients that are bright, functional, and refined, working alongside local businesses, artisans, and tradespeople to create one-of-a-kind spaces sourced from local talent. Delphinium: Past, Present, and Future — Bula’s love affair with design started at a young age, when her parents renovated an 1800s carriage home. She visited the site daily, watching in fascination as the space transformed. Moving into the house heightened her appreciation for details, particularly “the original exposed brick in the kitchen, the reclaimed beams in the barn that was now part of the home, and the creaks in the old floors, all things I still love today!” Bula worked for Ralph Lauren for a few years before leaving the corporate world to attend design school. After graduation,

66 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

she started Delphinium Design, forgoing the security of a stable job and predictable paycheck to take a chance on herself. “I grew up watching my dad create and grow his own company. His entrepreneurial spirit was always in our home and rubbed off on me at a young age,” remembers Bula. “He has been a wonderful resource for me in developing business savvy over the years.” As Bula looks ahead, she envisions growing her team, which she hopes will enable Delphinium Design to expand its services and client capacity. “In February 2021,” Jena shares, “I hired an amazing associate designer and the collaboration has allowed me to push myself creatively and produce even better work for our clients. I’m looking forward to bringing other creative minds on board and anxious to see what my firm can become!” Furthermore, she intends to continue adhering to the values that inspired her business’ name: “The delphinium flower symbolizes infinite possibilities, good will towards others, attracting new opportunities, and enjoying the little things that life has to offer,” explains Bula. “All things that I embrace and want my firm to stand for.” info delphiniumdesign.com / @delphiniumdesign

For this home, Habitude Interiors designer Jennifer Felts created a dining space that’s bold, but still plenty sophisticated and refined. One of the main goals for both Jennifer and the clients was to achieve a multifunctional space that could be both an area to enjoy meals or could function as a work-from-

home office space. Watershed Builders served as the contractor, the wallpaper is by Porter Teleo—hand-painted and made on handmade Japanese paper—and the table is Nuevo. The lamp is vintage and the artwork was bought on the homeowners' trip to Cuba in February 2020, just before the pandemic.

Designer Natalie Papier, of Home Ec., lets us in with this soulful, stylish sitting room in her own family's home in Old Providence. “I have always been a vintage and art collector,” Natalie shares. “I wanted to create an eclectic space for my treasure that still felt elevated and cohesive with a joyful, colorful vibe. My husband, kids, and I affectionately call it the ‘Sprite’ room because of the bold green ceiling and the yellow mid-century sofas.” This sitting room is where her vintage record player

console resides so it is primarily used as a lounge. The goal, according to Natalie, was to create a joyful, funky space that reflects how her family actually lives in and uses the room. Every piece in this space is vintage, found or foraged, other than the art. Local artist Garrison Gist created the pop art piece over the swan console table and the lip art is by Angela Chrusciaki Blehm. Everything from the ostrich to the rug, coffee table, chandelier, etagere and sofas are all vintage. The ceiling color is Espalier Green by Sherwin Williams.

In their signature style, Kelley and Berkeley Minkhorst de-

signed a room that is equal parts casual and chic, off-setting neutral tones with fun textures, patterns, and smaller statement pieces, like the matching lampshades that frame the bed. HON warmed up what had been a more modern space, and curated a more globally-inspired aesthetic. The bedroom features accessories from Shop House of Nomad and lighting from Circa.

When the time comes to downsize, it can be an emotional experience. Kids have left the nest, forcing a new chapter of adulthood and a novel space to better suit that new chapter. It can be an exciting new beginning or a distressing and unwelcome change. For two of Beth Keim’s clients, downsizing after their kids went to college felt like a renewal. They embraced the change as an opportunity to reinvent their living space and maybe even reinvent themselves along the way. The Assignment — When this couple hired Beth Keim, the owner of interior design firm Lucy and Company, their goal was to create an entirely new look and vibe, completely separate from their previous home. They aimed to prioritize one-of-a-kind pieces, while still preserving cohesion within each space. Each unique piece was to appear intentionally curated, rather

76 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

than randomly collected. The clients hoped the collective effect would be a completely different style than any they had pursued with kids in the house, not to mention completely original. The Canvas — The home that caught the couple’s eye was a four bedroom, three bath Myers Park house that was built in 1938 and renovated in 2013 by Ruard Veltman. The interior was designed by Hillary Rondero of Millicent Design, whose style has always delighted Beth Keim. In fact, some of Rondero’s lighting selections were so well chosen that Keim and her client negotiated to include them in the sale of the home. Whenever Keim takes on an interior design project, it is at least in part driven by the style of the home—its architecture and period—which she believes must necessarily inform the

HOME & DESIGN

interior design. This home, with all it’s interesting detail, nooks and crannies, and separate rooms, screamed for the types of unique pieces for which Keim’s clients had already indicated a preference. Keim identified the bones and size of the home as perfectly suited to her clients needs and vision. The Execution — “They were one of those clients whose intended style was very similar to my own, which made this project so much fun,” says Keim. The clients aspired to an eclectic chic aesthetic, which Keim achieved through the lighting she inherited from Hillary Rondero, one-ofa-kind art and furniture, quirky structural bones, and a cohesive color palette that tied it all together. Keim prioritized an earthy vibe with blacks, shades of white, neutrals, and small pops of caramel and rust. The textiles she incorporated included velvets, wools, leathers, and linens. The living room features a leather wall, which Keim sourced from Brooklyn-based textile/ art studio AVO. Additional vendors who contributed to this space include Jacob Wolfe, Stark Carpet, Oly Furniture, Verellen Furniture, Lee Furniture, Noir Furniture, Gabby Home, Arteriors Lighting, Circa Lighting, Ron Royals (photography pieces), and Natural Curiosities (wall decor). info lucyandcompany.com / @lucyandcompany

Nestled by the cool waters of the Chattooga River, you’ll find the forested Lowcountry paradise of Oconee County: Walhalla, South Carolina. Known for being the gateway into the Blue Ridge Mountains, this small town has a large list of things to do and experience well beyond the usual hiking and biking. The first thing you should do on your visit is explore the town… and what better way to do that than by taking a train ride from the historic Goldfields Railway. The railway will weave you through and above the mountainous region, for a unique way to experience all the breathtaking views Walhalla has to offer. From there you will see the longest pedestrian trail in the Carolinas, the Palmetto Trail, where each detour is bound to lead you to one of the many waterfalls in the area. If you stumble across the peaceful Issaqueena Falls, it means you have found yourself in Walhalla’s new Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park. You can spend your days strolling through the small shops and boutiques, and eventually make your way to an elegant dinner at Beyond the Bull. By the time you are ready to spend a night among the stars, a beautiful carriage ride from the infamous High Cotton Carriages will be there to whisk you away. W ELLN ESS R E AWA K E N E D Healthy intentions for 2022. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE

When the pandemic first hit, my bar for what constituted “well” plummeted. Forget running a five-minute mile. Wellness was being able to walk up the stairs in my house without needing to pause to catch my breath; it was being able to breathe without aid from a ventilator; it was having all five senses at my disposal on any given day. As the year dragged on, the pandemic and our nation’s fraying social fabric rubbed my psyche ragged. My focus shifted from physical wellness to mental and emotional wellness. How, in my tiny quarantine bubble, could I meet my social, emotional, and intellectual needs? Once I’d read every book on my shelf and binged every show on Netflix, what was there to do other than watch the proverbial paint dry and contemplate the meaning of life? I wasn’t alone in my contemplations. Apparently half the country was reckoning with fresh realizations

about what really mattered and what didn’t, who valued us and who took us for granted. Our reprioritizations reverberated through the workforce and the economy. We quit our jobs en masse to start our own businesses, change industries, or just find better work-life balances. At the advent of 2022, the dust is settling. We’ve had time to process these massive personal and global changes, and we’re emerging with an evolved understanding of and appreciation for wellness; at work and at home. We see with fresh eyes all of the opportunities we have to feed our wellness. Better yet, we are seeing the importance of prioritizing wellness in all its forms, not just reductive formulations of “self-care” or being physically fit. As we dive into a new year, consider the following suggestions for improved mental and emotional wellness.

Change Your Perspective — Sometimes, it’s good to feel small. We can become so caught up in the grind of our own lives that we, at best, neglect the beauty of the world around us and, at worst, fail to contextualize our trials and triumphs. • Embark on a Blue Ridge hike and revel in the interconnectivity of the forest; the complexity of each ecosystem; the height, breadth, and majesty of the Blue Ridge. Know that, in the grand scheme of things, you are tiny yet still significant as each of your actions ripples through your own ecosystem. • Get lost in the starry night sky via NC’s second largest planetarium, located at the Schiele Museum. Acknowledge that you are merely a speck of dust on the cosmic scale and take comfort in that fact. • Meditate on the beach or on the shores of LKN. Indulge your neglected senses: smell the breeze, feel the sun’s warmth, listen to the sounds of water. Consider the depths, both below and above, and revel in your access to this majesty of the earth. Serve Others — Recent understandings of wellness equate it with self-care, which too frequently veers toward self-indulgence. This, despite the fact that one of the best ways to care for yourself is to care for others. It can be refreshing to take a break from our

own emotions and needs by focusing on those of others. In fact, countless studies summarize the positive effects that altruism has on our mood and sense of self. So, instead of going on a spending spree at the mall next time you need a mood boost, consider shifting your focus outward instead. You’ll feel good by doing good. • Provide front desk support at Roof Above. • Tutor at the Charlotte Rescue Mission Learning Center. • Mentor a young person through Big Brothers Big Sisters. • Speak with your employer about establishing a committee for giving back. Through this committee, organize monthly company-wide events, such as creek clean ups, soup kitchen volunteer days, and fundraising runs.

Try Something New — When we challenge ourselves to evolve, to pursue new perspectives or learn new skills, then we open ourselves to the growth and stimulation necessary to feel fulfilled. On the other hand, when we stagnate, we can become restless or lethargic, trapped in a mental quagmire.

people in our lives and dug our social roots deeper, if not wider.

• Sip and paint at City Art Room or tackle a figure life drawing at the NC Academy of Art’s twice weekly public events.

• Whether investing more in our support system or interacting more meaningfully during our brief encounters with semistrangers, finding ways to shore up ties to the people in our orbit can have tremendously positive effects on our wellbeing.

• Spike your adrenaline at the US National Whitewater Center. Challenge yourself to tackle the high ropes course, zipline, mountain bike, or raft through a Class IV rapid. • Reach new heights while rock climbing at Inner Peaks. • Participate in a workshop at PlantHouse. Learn to assemble a terrarium and turn your brown thumb green. • Study a new subject through edX, a hub of online courses from institutions like MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, and Boston University.

• Memorize your barista’s name. Establish a connection with the people you see regularly, even if in ways as small as knowing one another’s names. • Plan a weekly hangout night with friends. It's helpful to give these hangouts a theme, to avoid the potential paralysis that can come from not knowing what to do. For example, meet up for informal wine tastings at Rosie’s Wine Garden every other Wednesday. • Your connections don’t have to be with humans. Visit Mac Tabby Cat Café to get some animal lovin' and lower those cortisone levels.

Connect — During quarantine, many of us realized just how critical our tiny, daily interactions can be. Shut up in our homes, deprived of the opportunity to make eye contact with someone on the bus, hold the door for a stranger walking into our favorite bar, say good morning to the attendant at our local gym… we learned the value of these minute moments. We leaned harder on the core

The new year is here, ripe with opportunities to immerse ourselves in the world around us. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reset and build the kinds of lifestyles that are meaningful and joyous in deep ways. I’m not advocating that we all quit our jobs and flip our lives upside down (unless that resonates—you do you!), just that we explore the small adjustments we can make to make the most of this beautiful and fleeting life, starting in 2022.

HEALTHY CAN BE DELICIOUS Some of our favorite Charlotte restaurants and breweries showcasing healthy, delicious, and sustainable menus. words ELEANOR MERRELL & SAMANTHA HUSTED photos JAMEY PRICE

Oh My Soul

I

“If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.” These simple words from food expert Michael Pollan succinctly express the best nutritional path forward. So much of what we eat today did not exist just a century ago. And we’re seeing the negative effects of an ever-increasing distance between what we put in our bodies and what thrives naturally on our planet. Meanwhile, a growing body of research on plant-based diets is revealing benefit after benefit when it comes to improved health — lower blood pressure, decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, healthier cholesterol levels, and longer life spans. As a result, many Americans are switching to plant-based diets — if not to enjoy the myriad benefits for their health, then to live more sustainably or ethically. This shift in eating habits and revised understanding of how the food we consume affects our bodies, the environment, and the local economy is being reflected and amplified in the restaurant scene — from the introduction of meat substitutes like Beyond Meat at Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts to an expanding selection of independent vegan restaurants and a higher prioritization of sustainable business practices. Many of these small businesses are finding ways to operate more sustainably even beyond plant-based menus. We’ve compiled a list of some of Charlotte’s most trailblazing restaurants, whether in the realm of plant-based offerings or sustainability more generally.

Living Kitchen

Oh My Soul From its street corner in Charlotte’s funky NoDa neighborhood, Oh My Soul radiates color and compassion with its robin egg blue exterior and 100% vegan menu. It also boasts one of the best outdoor seating areas in the Queen City. Enjoy an order of grilled BBQ “ribs” or a Buddha bowl beneath the shade of a 100-year-old oak tree. Kid Cashew At Kid Cashew, plant-based options abound, including a decent selection of vegan choices. When Kid Cashew does incorporate meat in a dish, trust that it will be fresh, never frozen nor fried. In recent years, the restaurant has found such success in Charlotte that it has expanded to Charleston and Atlanta. Haymaker Haymaker has two feet firmly in the farm-to-table world, with an eye on everything from seafood sustainability to conserving the energy used to power the restaurant each day through LEED accredited building practices. Owner and head chef William Dissen sources ingredients that are indigenous to the area and uses pickling and other preservation techniques to maximize out-of-season or excess ingredients. Plant Joy dishes out internationally-inspired vegan fare. Everything on the menu can be made gluten-free and many offerings are brimming with superfoods that pack a healthy punch of vitamins and minerals. Suffolk Punch Sedgefield’s Suffolk Punch is a coffee bar, brewery, taphouse, and culinary cafe that offers a rotating menu of seasonal, scratch-made meals. A portion of ingredients are locally and sustainably sourced. Birdsong Birdsong Brewing has long been a pioneer for Queen City breweries when it comes to running a sustainable business, both economically and environmentally. 100% of the brewery’s spent grain (and peanut shells!) is used by a local cattle farm and all cardboard, glass, and aluminum is recycled. Birdsong is also setting new standards for water conservation; the industry consumption average is about 8 gallons of water to one gallon of beer, whereas Birdsong’s ratio is 4:1. Additionally, Birdsong has installed a rooftop solar array composed of 220 panels. The brewery is committed to growing their sustainable efforts each year, so expect more innovations to come from this team in time. Living Kitchen At Living Kitchen, expect to find plant-based versions of classic dishes that are 100% organic, plant-based, and locally sourced. Stop by this South Boulevard gem for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or grab-n-go options. And rest easy knowing that there’s enough variety on this menu to keep things interesting even after many return trips — from avocado basil

Free Range Free Range Brewing, located across the parking lot from the original Amelie’s location on North Davidson Street, brews with 95% locally sourced ingredients and recycles their spent grain by donating it to farmers for feed. ESSENTIAL AESTHETICS & LASER W

hen Lori Alessandrini opened Essential Aesthetics and Laser in 2013, she strove to bring a personal touch to her practice, making each person feel as if they were a part of her family, with lasting results to match. She carried that vision through many years and extended it to what has now become a team of 11 talented women. Although Essential has grown to be a large medical spa, clients appreciate knowing their experience is customized and unique. Today, the state-of-theart facility and separate permanent makeup studio, are located in a beautiful complex in the Blakeney area. In an effort to combine technology and beauty, Alessandrini's practice utilizes the newest innovative approaches and treatments for a wide range of services. They offer customized facials,

chemical peels, permanent makeup, injectables and body contouring. Unique to most other practices are their laser services. These services include laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, photofacials, tattoo and scar removal, and leg vein treatments. They were chosen out of every other med spa in the state to partner with Kim Kardashian in removing two facial tattoos for a North Carolina parolee. They continue to serve the community through their own program, Project Exodus. People coming out of the prison system looking for a better life can have gang related facial tattoos removed at no charge. When you step into Essential, you get the feeling that not only are they changing skin, they are changing lives.
