No. 90

The holidays are already here? Boy, did that happen quickly. I was just sit ting at the beach in 90 degrees at the Outer Banks...or at least that's what it feels like. But those dog days of sum mer are months behind us, and after a vibrant fall in Carolina, it is now ev eryone's favorite time of year. And for this holiday issue, we wanted to focus on five seasonal topics: desserts, phi lanthropy, holiday trips, festive towns and where to shop local this season. On top of all the holiday Exclusives we also share the best New Year's events here in Charlotte, we sip sev eral cocktails including a delicious one from the popular Supperland, and we eat at the farm-to-table restaurant Heirloom! In our Arts and Culture sec tion we see Jena Gerena's stationary art, see some amazing fashion at the Mint, visit the Van Every/Smith gal leries, and view the sculptures of Kelly Sheppard Murray. In our home section we meet interior designer Marisa Wil son, see a holiday bar setup from Lisa Sherry, a Christmas gathering space from Delphinium Design, and a fes tive table setting from Traci Zeller. We also tour a beautiful custom home built by Arcadia and designed by the talent ed designer Kendra Tardif White of Pheasant Hill Designs. We also experi ence the holidays in Pinehurst, South ern Pines, and Moore County as well as cruise to the Lowcountry to enjoy a stay at the French Quarter Inn. We hope you enjoy, and we will see you in 2023. Wow, that sounds so weird, 2023! Happy Holidays everyone.

words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JAMEY PRICE Jen Gerena’s art in the form of stationery, wrapping paper, and more.

JJen Gerena is an artist, creative, and a designer with a degree in Visual Communications. She spent over a decade in marketing and graphic design in New York City, and when her son was born in 2010, Jen transitioned to freelance work. In 2019, she officially started Jen Gerena Design.

“I had a few friends request custom card orders after seeing my watercolor illustrations that I posted on Instagram,” Jen explains. “I realized how much I enjoyed creating my own designs and thought perhaps I could start selling them online. With my graphic design background, I am able to create and modify artwork and files. From there, I started selling my designs via social channels and Etsy.”

Today, Jen offers a wide array of cards, wrapping paper, and paintings, all featuring her original work. We caught up with her at her home studio to learn more about her business, what inspires her, and what’s next.

What was your goal with starting your own business? I had two main objectives: Give back and support local. Those two ideals have really guided me with how I approach and work with retailers. Aside from Etsy and my website, I currently have my designs available in both CLT Find shop locations, at Grow, Hive in Salisbury, and Northwest Art and Frame in Seattle. My work is also available online at Faire Wholesale. Every year I donate a portion of sales to onetreeplanted.org. Since 2019, I have been able to donate enough to have 550 trees planted globally.

What makes you gravitate toward creating cards?

I am a self-diagnosed paper goods hoarder. I have always loved stepping inside a shop to look over all the different types of stationery and gifting designs, and I love the idea that I could just pull a card out of a drawer if I was in a pinch or felt the urge to write to a friend. So I thought, why not create my own?

What makes handwritten cards or hand wrapped gifts so meaningful?

I think it’s the simple joy of receiving a card or gift from a friend or family member that shows that they were thinking of you. With texts and emails sent and received so instantly, I think it’s those moments where you’ve taken a few extra minutes out of your busy day to gather your thoughts and express yourself to someone. It’s the connection.

You sell paintings as well. Is that creation process different?

Yes, painting and selling my work is rather new for me. I actually use the painting process as a way to clear my mind. I tend to be messier when I’m painting; I gather a bunch of colors that “speak” to me in the moment, and I just see where it lands. Sometimes it's finished in one session, and sometimes I come back and add more layers. I’m a sucker for texture, so in my paintings you will almost always see that.

How do you come up with new ideas?

I try to draw something every day. I’ve found that when I make a regular practice of creating, I get lost in the process and different designs emerge. Sometimes it's watercolor, pen and ink or on the iPad. I’m a big fan of being bored and giving your mind and thoughts the ability to wonder to come up with ideas. I love nature and simple designs, and I think that comes through in my designs. Art is everywhere. It's also subjective, so create regardless of skill level or what the final outcome looks like. It's all about the process and the joy and freedom it brings you.

What are your hopes for the future of the business?

I’m a small business owner and I love to support fellow small business owners. I would love to have my products in every small business shop, to be honest. I believe small business owners are essential to the local community. I also hope to expand upon my product line. And to have the ability to plant more trees year over year with customers’ support!

SMALL TOWN, BIG

COLLECTION

LWhy Van Every/Smith Galleries are worth the drive.

Located just 30 minutes north of Charlotte, Davidson is a quaint college town with a thriving Main Street, ancient oak lined neighborhoods, and tight-knit core of townies who have spent decades shepherding Davidson from a sleepy, rural village to an all-American, charming destination.

Part of what gives Davidson so much life is the top-rated lib eral arts college that shares its name. Although perhaps best known as the institution that produced NBA star Stephen Cur ry, Davidson College is also known in academic circles as the “Harvard of the South,” attracting some of the country’s bright

est young minds with its promise of academic rigor and strong community. The college and the town maintain a close relation ship, and the college invites the public to join students at athletic events, arts performances, lectures and more.

One of the institutions that best epitomizes the college/town crossover is the William H. Van Every and Edward Smith Gal leries. Most of the campus rests within the natural boundary formed by Main Street and Concord Road, but the Van Every/ Smith Galleries hopscotch across Main Street, blurring the bor ders between town and college.

34 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
CULTURE

The Galleries function as headquarters for the college’s permanent collection of over 4,000 works of art that encompass a range of media and eras. Additionally, the Van Every/ Smith Galleries host rotating exhibitions, featuring local, national, and international art ists, as well as biannual spotlights on student/faculty work.

The origin of the Van Every/Smith Galleries can be traced back to student initiative, in true Davidson College fashion. The first art exhibition was organized by Davidson freshman Gordon Horton in 1938. Horton proposed using the exhibition as a springboard to curate a permanent gallery and claim dedicated gallery space; however, his efforts were waylaid (presumably by World War II), and almost a decade would pass before the college resumed conversations about bolstering visual arts initiatives on campus.

Much of the Galleries’ legacy and present-day grandeur can be attributed to Davidson alumnus and internationally-renowned artist Herb Jackson, who committed years of his career and thousands of hours of his free time to the cause. By 1999, the permanent collec tion had exploded from a few pieces to 2,600 works of art under the guidance of Jackson. Additionally, the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Art Center, which now houses the Van Every/Smith Galleries, opened in 1993, providing a more appropriate home for the now ex pansive collection.

The Galleries are now managed by Lia Newman, who has served as Director/Curator since 2013 and who works closely alongside Davidson College’s Art Collection Advisory Committee to preserve, promote, and expand the permanent collection.

Visit the Van Every/Smith Galleries Monday through Friday between 10 am and 5 pm or weekends between 10 am and 4 pm.

THE YEAR OF SCULPTURES

IIn 2016, artist Kelly Sheppard Murray embarked on a journey to create one sculpture every day for an entire year. The project began with small daily sculptures, made from materials already on hand in her studio such as pieces of wood, wire, and wire mesh. After assembling these raw materials into her intended form, Murray coated the surface with encaustic, a wax paint that lends both color and thickness.

Although originally trained as a sculptor, Murray had strayed from this medium, instead dedicating her time to two-dimensional media until 2016 when she began her yearlong one-sculptureper-day mission. Initially, each day’s work was distinct from the previous day’s creation, departing in color or shape or both. However, in the past two years, Murray has begun to intentionally relate pieces to one another, resulting in specific groupings and series united in concept or other qualities.

Her Hours, Days, Weeks series displayed earlier this year at Charlotte Russell Contemporary Fine Art Gallery in Raleigh. The exhibit, entitled “In Proximity,” paired Murray’s work with paintings by artist Peter Marin, whose two-dimensional, geometric paintings exuded a vibrancy that complemented the bold colors of Murray’s sculptures. The interconnectedness of the pieces in the shared exhibit, despite different forms and media, spoke to one of Murray’s guiding considerations as an artist: “I am interested in considering how organisms work positively together, even if they are different species.”

In fact, symbiotic relationships in nature (and nature more generally) have been inspiring Murray for years. “At the root of my work is a concern and interest and questioning of how we humans live with and connect to nature. I like to imagine us getting better at this so that we can have a more positive impact on the ecosystem that we are part of,” says Murray. “I figure if we notice and appreciate the tiny, little things in nature, that is a useful start to being better at caring for this world.”

In terms of process, the inspiration phase can extend months, sometimes even years, for Murray. For example, she may photograph a series of plants, rocks, shells, or another of nature’s citizens that are often overlooked, documenting and recreating the photographs’ subjects for years before transforming the concepts into finished work. “The ideas sometimes sit and simmer for a while and then suddenly show up in the work,” Murray explains.

She is quick to point out how vital her financial independence and emotional support systems are for her work. “Making a living as an artist isn’t easy and I am a huge advocate of having a steady income outside of the art-making part because that creates a kind of freedom to make what is really your best work and then slowly find the people that are fans that want to support the work,” she says.

When those fans eventually do connect with an artist’s work, it can be an extraordinary phenomenon. Murray has witnessed firsthand as viewers sit in awe of her creations, spinning sense from an imagination activated.

The next chapter for Heirloom. FARM-TO-TABLE, FAMILY STYLE
words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos ALLISON HESTER

HHeirloom is a restaurant that has had two distinct iterations. To understand its most current, meet the Murphy family: Patrick, the chef; Megan, the interior designer; Ryan, the horticulturalist; and Linda and Scott, the parents and investors. It is, by pure accident and genetic happenstance, a farm-to-table dream team packaged into a nuclear family. The Murphys purchased Heirloom and worked alongside original owner Clark Barlowe to navigate through the busi ness’ transition.

Clark Barlowe is a seventh generation North Carolinian who divides his time between the woods, where he forages for edible plants, mushrooms, and more, and the kitchen, where he transforms those collected treasures into delec table dishes. Earlier in his culinary career, he worked for some of the best restaurants in the country and competed on Food Network’s Chopped. He then started the endeavor that would cement his status as a household name in Char lotte: Heirloom, a farm-to-table restaurant. Barlowe decided

to sell Heirloom in 2019 so that he could move across the country with his partner in pursuit of a different dream.

A few months into ownership, the Murphy family felt as though they had hit their stride, but then catastrophe struck. The Murphys pur chased Heirloom in December 2019. Within just a few months, the COVID-19 pandemic would be in full swing, and restaurants would be required to close their doors to all dine-in customers. For a while, the family was able to pivot. Parent/inves tor Scott and son/chef Patrick , along with Pat rick's longtime friend from the days of culinary school at Charlotte's Johnson and Wales Uni versity, Seth Wilson, redesigned the menu and operation to more efficiently serve takeout cus tomers, but it wasn’t sustainable. Ultimately, the team decided to shut down the restaurant. They grappled with whether to do so permanently or to find a way to weather the viral storm, finally deciding to say goodbye to the Heirloom they had known in west Charlotte and open a new location in Belmont.

Now, as 2022 slides into its third season, Heir loom is once again thriving, bouncing back like

a perennial in springtime. Daughter/designer Megan brought the interior of the new restau rant space to life; son/horticulturalist Ryan re vamped the Belmont Community Gardens and regularly harvests his crops for use at the res taurant as well as restarted the Belmont Farm ers Market to provide a platform to continue to push the story of farm to table. Son/chef Patrick splits time between the family's second Belmont restaurant, Honeycomb Cafe and managing the day to days, pushing the brand and building a culture revolved around family.

As the Executive Chef, Seth's menus at Heir loom are designed to highlight local farms and seasonal flavors. Summer favorites included the watermelon salad featuring puffed farro and whipped ricotta, seasoned with herbs, bal samic, and olive oil; as well as the spiced vegeta ble steak served with cashew cream, herb salad, chili oil, and chili threads, and the bone-in dry aged tajin pork chop plated with NC corn, cotija cheese, crispy okra, and peach chutney.

The cocktail menu includes year-round clas sics like the signature barrel aged old fash ioneds and margaritas, but still leaves space for

seasonal play. Take, for example, the peach party: a prosecco float flavored with Kettle One peach & orange blos som, Cointreau, and lemon.

Looking ahead, there’s potential for the restaurant to become a true heir loom. But at the end of the day, what is likely to be the most effective har binger of continued success is noth ing quite so tangible as profits and losses: “We try to connect as a family unit away from the restaurants when we can,” says Linda Murphy. “I keep a pulse on making sure we remember we are family first, business second.”

BRINGING MORE THAN JUST COMFORT TO COMFORT FOOD

Discover how Mary Jayne Wilson built a business with care and thoughtfulness at the center of everything they do.

WWhen the COVID-19 pandemic first hit Charlotte, it brought with it all kinds of feelings—fear, uncertainty, frustra tion, and even grief. So, so much grief—for loved ones lost, lives put on hold, businesses shuttered, and everything in between. With all that our communities were dealing with, it suddenly be came all the more important to find good sources of comfort— something that Mary Jayne Wilson understood as she tried to find the silver lining in her own pandemic struggles.

“Thoughtful Baking Co. came to be after losing my job during the pandemic,” says Wilson. “I had known for a long time that

I wanted to have my own business, and this was just the push I needed to make that happen.”

As Wilson conceptualized her budding business, she took a hard look at her surroundings and focused on what she felt would be the ultimate comfort food—pot pies. These warm, nourishing meals were perfect for feeding a wide range of peo ple, from families looking for an easy dinner to isolated workers looking for a taste of home. But Wilson always knew she’d like to expand her menu one day, which is why Thoughtful Baking Co. now offers all kinds of pies, desserts and even quiches.

“I grew up loving to cook and bake and loved all things food,” recalls Wilson. “Growing up in NC, I have many child hood memories of picking strawberries at the local farm in the spring, picking tomatoes from the garden in the sum mer and blueberries from our neighbor’s blueberry bushes.”

Wilson’s love of food—and her respect for where it all comes from—is what drove her to create a business that truly felt thoughtful about what dishes they were making. This thoughtfulness ex tends beyond just choosing high-quality seasonal ingredients. Thoughtful Baking Co. also takes pride in treating their staff

As Wilson’s business grew into a full-time pursuit with five ad ditional employees, she’s continued to reflect on just how much more thoughtful she’s become.

“I have left behind the idea that food has to be precise and per fect,” notes Wilson of her lessons learned while pursuing a career in food. “Beauty in food, for me now, comes from how it makes people feel. It comes from the energy, love and passion that was put into growing/raising it and making it.”

Those who want to taste the difference that fresh, seasonal in gredients and a little thoughtfulness can make can find Wilson and her team at various Farmers’ Markets throughout the Charlotte, NC area. Thoughtful Baking Co. even takes pre-orders and custom orders. Customers can reach out via their website to learn more.

BAR Á VINS’

EVEN FANCIER CAVIAR SERVICE

Bar á Vins, NoDa’s new neighborhood wine upscale-meets-dive bar, is the perfect place to es cape the chilly streets this season.

Whether you’re looking to blow off some steam or get in the celebratory mood, the caviar service is an excellent option. Caviar is delicious year-round, but its unordinary, extravagant nature has contributed to the briney dish coming to signify holiday time.

At Bar á Vins, order up a crisp glass of bubbly and the “Even Fancier Caviar Service” with Hackleback caviar, Lay’s potato chips, and creme fraiche. If you

haven’t heard of that particular pairing, rest assured: It’s a tried and true way to enjoy this luxurious cana pé. The fish itself, Hackleback, is a popular domestic sturgeon caviar, and is the last American Wild caviar. The roe is dark and firm but with a mild, subtle flavor.

The Lay’s add the necessary mouth-delivery ser vice with a little fat from the oil and crispness from the chip, and the creme fraiche lends a creamy, slight ly tangy way to round out all the flavors. Don’t just take our word for it: Go order it for yourself and see what the hype is about.

WILDFLOWERS

Dilworth Tasting Room may be best known for their wine tastings and small plate offerings, but this unique bar experience offers much more. Fresh, light flavors and seasonal colors make the “Wildflower” an excellent mocktail order this month. Made with Seedlip Spice 94 (a distilled, non-alcoholic spirit with no sugar and no calo

ries), the beverage offers a warming, aromatic blend of allspice and cardamom. It is then shak en with a housemade blackberry cordial, lemon juice, a splash of ginger beer, and topped off with fresh basil. This order is a nice departure from some of the heavier drinks and bites that charac terize the holidays.

VINTAGE INSPIRED

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 67
words ELEANOR MERRELL photos of spaces AMANDA ANDERSON portraits LAURA SUMRAK The many hats of Charlotte interior designer Marisa Wilson.

TThe first house I fell in love with was my Aunt Carmen’s Victorian home by the ocean in Cape May, NJ,” recalls Marisa Wilson. This home sparked Wilson’s love affair with interior de sign—an affair that spanned decades and ultimately resulted in a thriving business.

Wilson worked in non-profit fundraising for nearly 20 years before deciding to return to school and study design. She start ed taking on design projects as a side hustle and dreamed of the day when she could design full-time. One day, she decided to stop dreaming and start doing. She quit her job and bought a house (renovation project) in the same week. “I finally had the confi dence, experience, and community of support I needed to go full time. I was tired of waiting for other factors in my life to be in place for me to go for my dreams,” she says.

Initially, Wilson envisioned joining a design firm. However, during the days of her side hustle, she built a website and estab lished an LLC to document her first project. The consequence was, as Wilson says, “a surprise business.” Although she didn’t know it at the time, she was laying the foundation for Marisa Wil son Interior Design, her now-thriving company that offers every thing from design plans to full-service interior design services.

A Day in the Life

Wilson’s process begins with a consultation, during which she does a deep dive into who her client is and how they live.

“Think of me as your new best friend. We’ll have cocktails to gether, laugh at inside jokes, and I might have the key to your house,” Wilson says. “I spend a lot of time getting to know the real you because that’s how I design your perfect home.”

Next, Wilson’s full service experience moves to the actual de sign process. “I curate vintage-inspired, livable, and approach able spaces,” says Wilson. Her aesthetic often veers toward midcentury modern, featuring streamlined and simple furniture, and she has a partiality for casual and comfortable spaces where anyone can feel welcome and at home. No matter the project, ex pect to find a few vintage pieces if Wilson is involved. “My house is vintage, my car is vintage…I just really have an appreciation for older elements,” she confesses. Her appreciation becomes apparent in her clients’ homes after long, intentional curating trips to places like Sleepy Poet Antique Mall, Charlotte Vintage Furniture, Dressing Rooms Interiors, Slate Interiors, and The Depot at Gibson Mill.

Beautiful Results,

Wilson learned that she possessed anoth er skill, beyond her eye for stylish designs, that would come in handy while deliver ing her design services: mediation. “The couples I’ve worked with hardly ever have the same aesthetic or design goals. Work ing through those tough decisions can be a huge benefit to bringing in a professional,” explains Wilson. Furthermore, Wilson has discovered how much psychology underlies a person’s desire to improve their home... the color swatch is only the tip of the ice berg. That’s a major reason why she spends so much time truly getting to know her cli ents, as well as their core desires.

At the end of the process, both Wilson and her clients are rewarded with the final reveal. ”I live for the reveal—that’s when the magic happens and you finally see how it all came together (cue the tears). I know I’m fulfilling my personal calling when I create a space you love to live in,” says Wilson.

Lean in to lighting.

Switching from overhead lighting to lamps is a gamechanger. Or incorporate a dimmer so the light doesn’t have to be so bright in the evening. I like shopping for unique vin tage lighting at antique malls or on Etsy; they’re always a conversation starter.

Think big picture.

I think it’s hard for people to think of the big picture. People can find items they like, but it’s hard to pull it all together in a cohe sive manner. Scale and balance in a room can be very nuanced, and it takes practice.

Be original. It’s easy to mimic certain styles or spaces you find on Instagram or Pinterest to make a space that looks good. To make it a true reflection of your personality, you have to know what you love and be unapologetic about it. Do you love fishing, puzzles, al bums, or books? Prioritizing space to showcase the items that make you you is what distinguishes your space from your neighbors.

GLITZ AND GLAMOUR

Lisa Sherry’s signature design style is light, bright and ethereal with layers of organic texture… but in the lower level of her own Lake Norman home, she decided to design an “offseason lair” to shake things up. Lisa created a cozy spot to hi bernate with games, cocktails, fireplace, sprawling sofas and chairs, a flat screen TV, and views of the lakefront.

“Honestly, it felt a bit out of my comfort zone to paint a room black,” Lisa says, “but I love to push boundaries. My own homes are also design labs to test new ideas.”

The entire space is dramatic and alluring, but as for how she makes it holiday-friendly?

“I love the holidays, but I’m not one to force seasonal swag into a space. This space, bathed in black, is a natural for a glamorous holiday vibe… It’s adult and it’s sexy.”

Lisa’s top tips for your own at-home holiday decor: —

Be unconventional: There is not a holiday décor manual. Go monochrome: Winter whites are beautiful at the holi days. The absence of color is not the absence of joy. Rather, calm spaces elevate the spirit. For me, that’s what the holi days are all about.

Hunt and gather: Some of my fave holiday “decorations” are foraged in the woods. Pinecones, sticks, twigs, and ber ries are the stuff of wonderful garlands and ornaments.

Remember, less is more: The holidays are a time to get real — be with the ones you love and leave nothing unsaid. Calm restorative spaces and decoration facilitate connection.

CHRISTMAS CHARM

Traci Zeller’s client in Cheval has tapped her many times over the years to continue to add layers (like new pil lows and art) to the interior design work Traci originally did in their cozy breakfast room.

The holidays, in particular, are a time when Traci can come back in and work her magic, as she did here.

“The goal is to layer holiday upon the existing decorating, so that it still feels like your house, but more festive and ready for holiday entertaining,” she shares. “My favorite way to do that is to amplify the existing colors, perhaps by increasing the intensity and by layering in metallics, and also pulling out an accent color that isn’t highlighted the rest of the year.”

One stunning, and easy to implement, touch is the layered greenery added into the chandelier.

Traci’s top tips for your own at-home holiday decor:

I’m always a fan of combining fresh greenery and fruits with special pieces you already own, but highlighting those pieces in a different way—for instance, using a silver punch bowl for the flowers, or in my home, I have a Julie Silvers pottery piece, which stays on my coffee table year-round, but looks festive filled with magnolia.

TRIMMING THE TREE

Jena Bula, of Delphinium Design, offers a boutique experience to her Charlotte-area clients— and this includes bringing holiday cheer into her clients’ homes.

This Asheford Green living room in Concord was a fullservice design project, where Jena and her team reimagined the floor plan, fully furnished the space, designed a custom mantle, added fresh paint, and refinished the floors. Finally, after the new furniture and custom drapery was installed, they styled the space for Christmas.

The overarching goal, holiday season or not, was to create a room for intimate conversation.

“We included custom drapery that the client can pull it closed when they want privacy or when watching movies and laid out the furniture so that it is conducive to conversation, putting down a good book, or a glass of wine.”

From there, the team got down to business trimming the tree and perfecting each festive detail.

“We had so much fun styling this space with holiday décor,” Jena shares. “For this project, we pulled colors from the so

fas, pillows, coffee table, and rug, and then incorporated them in our décor instead of decorating with the typical red and green color palette.”

The design team layered the tree with everything: pine cones, berries, lights, ribbon, an assortment of ornaments, and some sparkles — but all while sticking to the color pal ette of pastels, whites, and shades of blue. They then hand wrapped all the presents with French blue and gold ribbon to create cohesion in the space.

Chancery Custom provided the drapery panels and pillows, and AM Custom Home Creations built the custom mantle.

Jena's top tip for your own at-home holiday decor

An impactful way to add a sophisticated and cohesive look to your space is to decorate with a color palette that is similar to the furniture/décor in your existing space. Finally, if you have a fireplace, get it going! There is nothing like a roaring fire to set the mood.

FARMHOUSE, ELEVATED

Discover how this home with interior design from Pheasant Hill Designs and built by Arcadia melds the old with the new, the vintage with the modern, to create a space that’s wholly unique.

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 79

KKendra Tardif White is the mastermind behind Pheasant Hill Designs, an award-winning design firm based here in Charlotte. Kendra’s work is all about striking a delicate bal ance between function, comfort, and style. She believes that the interior of your home should intrinsically speak to who you are as a person.

In a happy marriage of minds, when clients come to Arcadia, the builders of this beautiful home, they know they won’t be getting any old ordinary place to live. Clients expect a level of detail, customization, and an uncommon level of care that has become synonymous with the Arcadia name. That is why the owners of this Weddington lot in The Meadows knew that they could trust Arcadia to build their five-bedroom, seven-bathroom dream home. They felt certain that the builders could handle ev ery request and design note thrown their way—even ones that felt difficult to blend together.

“The overall aesthetic is really hard to nail down,” notes Kendra. “We were trying to create a “collected” feel for the fi nal product.”

Finding a way to meld the clients’ seemingly opposing styles and architectural requests proved to be a welcome challenge to Pheasant Hill and Arcadia, and the results speak for them selves as soon as guests walk through the threshold. The neu tral tones and high ceilings make the whole front of the house feel light and welcoming, while the blue-toned art and soft grays give the space a bit more personality. The faux candle chande lier grounds the room’s more modern elements with an antique look that somehow doesn’t feel out of place—a testament to how seamlessly the elements in this home design work together.

Those themes carry on into the rest of the rooms, which all have varying degrees of neutral tones, blue-gray hues, and eyecatching light fixtures. Because the clients entertain frequently,

80 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
HOME & DESIGN

each room needed to be as functional as it is stylish: This was achieved by incorpo rating custom cabinets and shelving by Distinctive Cabinets into the home. These features served not only as extra storage space, but also as centerpieces. This is especially clear in the living room, where floor-to-ceiling shelves frame the room’s stunning fireplace and mantle.

The study also exemplifies the home’s built-in cabinetry, but takes a small de parture from the brightness of the rest of the home. Instead, the study incorporates less white and beige tones in favor of a slightly darker color palette. While the col ors still feel very modern, the dark leather chairs bring in a traditional warmth that makes the room feel timeless. And if the actual study wasn’t enough for inviting conversation, the wine room and bar visible through the doorway would definitely do the trick.

But these clients needed more out of their home than just space to entertain— this was meant to be their refuge, a place of tranquility after all the welcomed chaos from visiting family and business associates. To serve that purpose, Kendra brought as much serenity as she could to the bedrooms. These mini sanctuaries pull in the blues and grays from the rest of the home while still focusing on neutral whites and browns. This allowed for a warm, relaxing feel in certain rooms and an open, clean look in others.

By sourcing from over 18 different vendors across the US and the UK, Kendra blended modern and classic elements together into areas that felt both unique and comfortable. From the bedrooms to the foyer, the PHD team created a house that had everything their clients wanted in a dream home.

These months are a unique time to enjoy the Holy City. A vast majority of the residences don sparkling white lights, garland, bows, and twinkly touches. When you’re ready to shop or ex plore, King Street and Market Street have their fair share of gems, and Waterfront Park is only four blocks away. Novem ber and December in Charleston still have plenty of pleasantly warm days, so grab a complimentary bike from the hotel and hit the streets.

For nearby dining options, we recommend Slightly North Of Broad for modern Southern and Lowcountry fare, and Tempest for seasonal seafood and an extensive wine list.

Afterwards, return to FQI, nestle up next to one of the lounge area fireplaces, and enjoy a nightcap from the bar.

WHERE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT COMES ALIVE

Find out what makes Forest City such a great place to visit during the holidays.

WWhen someone pictures an idyllic town set in the Western Carolinas, there’s a lot that can pass through their mind. They might think of the sprawling Carolina foothills. They might think of a bustling downtown filled with local shops and patrons, all enjoying the luxury of a slow-paced day. Or, maybe they simply imagine a close-knit community that supports each other by cel ebrating the year’s special moments.

Put all of that together, and the town they’ve imagined actually exists: Forest City, NC. Located about an hour’s drive from both Asheville and Charlotte, this small Western town is about as idyl lic as it gets. Founded during the textile boom in the Carolinas, Forest City quickly became a prosperous location for those look ing to work hard and live simply. Even after the fall of the textile industry, the town continued to keep those values close and focus on maintaining a strong sense of community. No time is that more apparent than when they’re celebrating the holidays.

Every year, Forest City sets up more than one million Christmas lights along Main Street and turns them all on during a special lighting ceremony. By decorating everything from the telephone poles to the historic buildings, the locals truly make this small town come alive with Christmas spirit. But the fun doesn’t stop there— in addition to the lighting ceremony usually held in late November, the town also launches a Christmas parade a few days later. Anyone can register to join in on the fun, with some notable inclusions being decorated firetrucks, classic cars, school bands, and of course, Santa’s float. Don’t forget about some picture-perfect photo opportunities with the town holiday tree or the region’s largest lighted ornament.

Want to experience a Forest City Christmas with a little less crowd density? Consider reserving a private horse-drawn carriage ride instead. These carriages will take passengers slowly up Main Street so they can enjoy the lights without any distractions. Stop by the concession stands before the trip for some hot ci der to really make the ride feel magical. Those traveling with children can also send them on a holiday hayride where they can enjoy some hot chocolate and hear about the town’s history.

Whether they want to enjoy the holiday festivities or just check out the town’s lo cal shops, visitors are sure to find themselves rested and recharged after a day trip to Forest City, NC. Those who want to make a weekender out of their trip can stay in one of the area’s various hotels or even head to the nearby Broad River Camp ground in Mooresboro, NC. This campground has something for everyone, from luxury cabins and camping domes to RV parking and tent areas.

HELLO TO 2023

Ring in the New Year with these Charlotte area celebrations. SAY

TThere can be pressure attached to ushering our lives into a new year. If we fail to celebrate appropriately — if we don’t toast with champagne or if we find ourselves sur rounded by the wrong people when the clock strikes midnight — will we doom ourselves to waking up on the wrong side of the bed every day, over and over until the calendar pages flip back to December 31st? Conversely, if we eat our meal of black eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread, if we offer our midnight kisses to a beloved, if we party all night with friends and neighbors, will we then secure a year of prosper ity, romance, and joy?

It certainly feels like those first moments of the new year set the stage for how we experience the earth’s next trip around the sun. And, in a way, perhaps they do, insofar as we once again are tasked to set our intentions. But even the strongest intentions can be waylaid, so it’s just as much about setting them as finding our way back to them when the uni verse yanks us about.

So, consider these suggestions for how to celebrate the new year in and around the Queen City, recalling all the while that New Year’s Day can be as much of a fresh start as each of the mornings that follow if we only will them to be so.

Celebrate in style

The new year is the perfect time to revamp your wardrobe. Marie Kondo that space and donate or sell what no longer fits or matches your style. Then, treat yourself to a fresh outfit from one of Charlotte’s boutiques. If you want to feel like a star, we recommend a trip to House of LeMond, where LeMond CraytonHart thoughtfully curates vintage pieces. For a more traditional selection of men’s high-end fashion, pick up a suit from Taylor Richards & Conger in the SouthPark area or start from scratch and schedule a session with a local stylist, like Whitley Hamlin, Kristin Heinrich, Stacee Michelle, or any one of the many other wildly talented folks.

Party like it’s 2023

New duds in hand, doll up and head out. The Hilton in Uptown Charlotte (just one block from the corner of Trade and Tryon) will be hosting a Great Gatsby-themed soiree. Think flapper evening gowns and three-piece suits. Tickets are required and grant access to five hours of prepaid drinks, light appetizers, and a live DJ.

100 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM CULTURE

If you’re looking for a party that’s just as dapper but feels more of-this-century, head to The Ritz. This five star stunner in the heart of uptown throws an annual party in its 7,000 square foot ballroom. Expect multiple DJs and semi-formal attire.

Alternatively, avoid the traffic and to-do of Uptown and mo sey down to Suffolk Punch’s Punchin’ New Years Eve. Dance the night away in Norfolk Hall or rest your feet in Suffolk’s out door, heated party tent. Nibble on some Suffolk Punch yummies whenever your dance moves need to cool off.

The Music Factory throws an annual New Year’s bash, and it’s always a big time. This year is likely to be even bigger with the addition of Bazal Gallery and Nightclub’s 7,000 square feet of “heaven and hell.” Upstairs, a sophisticated gallery space inspires reflection and awe. Downstairs, a dimly lit nightclub stimulates dancing and a light dose of debauchery.

Gather with neighbors

The City of Charlotte puts on its own New Year’s Eve celebra tion every year. Levine Avenue of the Arts, sandwiched between Tryon and Church Street, closes down for an evening of outdoor festivities, including live music, a lighting of the Queen City crown, and a fireworks show at midnight.

Bring the kids

Head to Carowinds Winterfest and bask in the glow of thou sands of Christmas lights, ride the coasters, and ice skate. The park is open until 12:30 am and will light a powerful fire works display at midnight. But, if you have kids, you might be

more thrilled to learn that Carowinds has multiple countdowns throughout the night, so younger guests might be more easily persuaded to head home closer to bedtime.

Keep it casual

Sycamore Brewing bills its New Year’s Eve celebration as the most laidback New Year’s Eve event in Charlotte. With no dress code and no tickets, it’s the perfect place to sip on a Mountain Candy and come as you are.

Stay at home

Really though, there’s sometimes no better place to come as you are than your own home. Stay in and celebrate as you see fit, perhaps among friends and loved ones. But before you settle in, pick up a bottle of bubbly from Jeffrey Kellogg, champagne aficionado and co-owner of NoDa’s Bar à Vins. While you’re at it, zip down to Babe & Butcher in Camp North End for a charcuterie board that will make any night feel festive.

Keep it cultural

Ring in the new year with 10,000 strangers and one legendary band. Concord boys turned Grammy winners, The Avett Brothers have played a New Year’s Eve concert every year for almost a de cade. Catch them this New Year’s Eve at the Bojangles Coliseum.

The Middle C Jazz Club is one of the Queen City’s best-kept secrets. This swanky uptown venue will celebrate with The Voltage Brothers performing R&B, swing, beach music, disco,

Start 2023 off with a happy tummy

It almost seems like there are more New Year’s food traditions than there have been years to invent them. This author recommends paying special at tention to your first meal in 2023: start the year right with a satisfied stomach. Perhaps kick off New Year’s Day with a hot, made-to-order donut from Reigning Donuts and a latte from Summit Coffee. Or opt for something more substantial— maybe a classic Southern brunch dish like chicken and waffles from Link & Pin. No matter what it is, make it count.

Take a hike

Pull on a pair of boots and head to Morrow Mountain, which is only an hour from Charlotte, yet feels like a rugged escape, spanning from lake edge to river edge and up and down a mountain. Al ternatively, make the slightly longer trek to Stone Mountain. Drink in expansive views from a dizzying height atop a steep mountain bald.

Take a plunge

Make your way to the Whitewater Cen ter’s Catawba River access point. Bring a towel, a change of clothes, and a thermos of something piping hot. Take the plunge into the Catawba’s chilly waters and wash away the worries and shortcomings of 2022.
